EXAMINATION by metallographic and X-ray diffraction means of an austenitic steel containing 0.06 pct C, 1.26 pct Mn, 0.38 pct Si, 21.15 pct Ni, 18.72 pct Cr, 3.07 pet W, and 9.14 pet Mo indicated that a - phase, which had not been reported in the literature, existed in this steel. Both the s and car-bides of the M6 C type were present in the as-forged steel. The carbides dissolved completely in the aus-tenite at approximately 2200°F (1205°C). The s, however, was present at all temperatures up to the solidus temperature of the steel at approximately 2375°F (1300°C). Ferrite was not found in any condition of the steel. The faintness of some of the s lines in X-ray patterns obtained from samples of the steel made it desirable to isolate the s prior to verification of its entire pattern. An expert system advisor consultant to assist a coal mine section foreman is described in this report. The system is designed for an underground continuous miner section that is being specifically used for longwall development. The system provides three methods of operation that include normal operational mode for use underground, a training mode for use in training section foremen under controlled classroom conditions, and a demonstration mode that is free running. The Face Decision Support System or FDSS, is designed to interface with section environmental monitoring equipment and section production monitoring equipment that may appear in the future. This provides automated reprioritzation of the section foreman's job list from the system. The system 1S written in LASER which is written in C and is operated under the UNIX operating system. The objective of the entire FOSS system is to ensure that no job or piece of information important to safety or to production is forgotten because of the immediate problems confronting the section foreman.

By testing polycrystalline specimens from textured plates which had Previously been used to provide materials for growing single crystals, it has been possible to relate the plastic anisotropy of textured materials to the deformation behavior of single crystals. The deformation studies have been conducted at room temperature on textured polycrystalline magnesium and binary Mg-Th and Mg-Li alloys. Variously oriented specimens of the textured materials were deformed in plane-strain compression and in uniaxial tension and compression. The stress-strain curves are similar in their general jorm of anisotropy and stress levels to those obtained on single crystals of the same alloys. The degree of anisotropy is lower, however, in the polycrystalline materials and correlates with the intensity of the basal texture. Yield loci for the textured materials appear reasonable in terms of the deformation mechanisms, and deviate sharply from the form predicted by the Hill analysis for aniso-tropic material. A N earlier study1 of single crystals has shown that magnesium and magnesium alloys with thorium and with lithium deform at room temperature primarily by basal slip, {10i2) twinning, and (1011) banding. The (10i1) banding mode is a combination of {10ll) twinning followed by (1012) twinning and basal slip within the doubly twinned material.2, 3 Magnesium with lithium can also deform by {1010)(1210) prism slip.1'4'5 Still other deformation modes have been reported for magnesium6-11 but these are considered to play a minor role in room-temperature deformation. In a polycrystalline material, plastic deformation must occur in the individual grains through the operation of one or more of the various deformation modes. Because the critical shear stress for basal slip is very low compared to the activation stresses for the other deformation modes,' basal slip accounts for much of the deformation in the polycrystalline aggregate. However, since there are only two mutually independent basal slip systems, and because five independent systems must be active for an arbitrary shape change in any material,'' modes other than basal slip must account for some of the strain. The deformation of textured magnesium, like that of other hcp metals, must be controlled by the same mechanisms observed in single crystals. In strongly textured material, the form of the anisotropy should be similar to that of single crystals, and the degree of anisotropy should depend on the intensity of the texture. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The anisotropy of deformation was investigated through the use of plane-strain compression tests, as well as uniaxial tension and compression tests. Materials. Test specimens were cut from the three textured plates of magnesium which had previously been used to provide material for single crystals.' These plates, furnished by Dow Chemical Co., had been reduced about 80 pct during the process of being hot-rolled to their final 1/4-in. thicknesses. The plates had the three respective compositions, pure magnesium, Mg-0.5 wt pct Th (0.49 pct Th by spectro-graphic analysis), and Mg-4 wt pct Li (3.84 pct Li by chemical analysis). Impurities other than iron were less than 0.0005 pct Al, 0.01 pct Ca, 0.001 pct Cu, 0.0006 pct Mn, 0.001 pct Ni, 0.003 pct Pb, 0.001 pct Si, 0.001 pct Sn, and 0.01 pct Zn. Iron was 0.001 pct in the pure magnesium, 0.002 pct in the Mg-0.5 pct Th, and 0.014 pct in the Mg-4 pct Li. The textures of the three plates were determined by X-ray diffraction utilizing only the reflection technique out to an angle of 50 deg from the sheet normal. The resulting basal pole figures are presented in Figs. 1, 3, and 5. Grain sizes in the plates were ASTM number 4 in the pure magnesium and number 7 in each of the alloys. Plane-Strain Compression Tests. Plane-strain compression specimens approximately $ in. thick by 4 in. wide by $ in. long were prepared for each of the three compositions. These specimens were prepared in a manner similar to that used for the single-crystal specimens of the earlier study.' All polycrystalline specimens were stress-relieved at 500°F for hr as the final step in their preparation for testing. The testing procedure was identical to that used for the single crystals, involving compression in a channel and using 2-mil Teflon film as a lubricant. The specimens were tested in six orientations of interest, these being the six combinations of the rolling, transverse, and thickness directions of the material serving as loading, extension, and constraint directions in the plane-strain compression test. Each of the six orientations was assigned a two-letter identifying code. These are combinations of the letters (thickness direction), R (rolling direction), and T (transverse direction) with the first letter signifying the loading direction and the second letter the extension direction. For example, ZR specimens were compressed in the thickness direction while extension was permitted to operate in the rolling direction of the textured material. To facilitate comparison of the present work with that of the single-crystal study1 the orientations used for single crystals are given in Table I along with the polycrystalline orientations that most nearly correspond. During fiscal years 1967-68, the Bureau of Mines produced 185 technical papers and reports about petroleum and oil-shale research, which were published either by the Bureau or by others as referable scientific literature. Numerous other reports were prepared for Government agencies, State agencies, and organizations of the petroleum and natural gas industry engaged in cooperative research programs with the Bureau. Research performed during the reporting period by the Bureau on petroleum, natural gas, and oil shale was classified by 71 active projects. A basic appropriation of $3,575,000 was supplemented by $1,300,000 in fiscal year 1967, and that of $4,043,000 by $1,402,000 in fiscal year 1968, making the appropriated-to-supplemental fund ratios about 2.8 to 1 for fiscal year 1967 and 2.9 to 1 for fiscal year 1968. In fulfillment of the mission of the Bureau, through planned research programs, methods for producing and utilizing petroleum were improved. The continued conservation of this natural resource of petroleum, including crude oil, natural gas, and oil shale, was pursued through research performed by some 350 personnel at two petroleum research centers and two petroleum research laboratories supervised and supported by administrative personnel of the Bureau and the Department of the Interior.

Tremendous interest has been evidenced in the subject of dewatering and drying ooal for the past 10 years, and yet little effort has been made to summarize the literature, at least so far as this country is concerned. Only a few published articles have dealt solely with dewatering and drying coal. In most cases the subject has been discussed briefly, either in general terms or as to specific installations. It is desirable that a compendium be prepared collecting in one place information on the dewatering and drying of coal, the needs for this process in various fields, the available equipment, and the current American practice in regard to it. This work was underta..lten by the :Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the University of Alabama. New coal-washing plants in which various types of dewatering and drying equipment were in operation were visited in-Pennsylvania; Ohio, India...~a~ and Illinois. The dewatering·and drying of coel has .been studied in this coimtry by the Surface Preparation ·Committee of the ·coal Operato~s• Committee of the .American Mining ·Oongress. The authors investigate the influence of the basicity index CaO / Si02 on the sintering properties of hematite ore mixtures. The experimentation was performed with three different mixtures of ores from Tazadit, Nimba, Mano-River, Itabira, Marcona, Goa, Mapawa and Cassinga. Increasing the basicity index CaO / Si02 between 0.1 and 3, chiefly through limestone admixture makes possible to reduce the thermal consumption of sintering and to improve the physical and chemical properties of the sinter. In the case of a plant using hematite ores, it seems interesting to produce an hyperbasic sinter and to complete the blast furnace burden with calibrated ore or acid pellets.

IN powder metallurgy it has often been observed that shrinkage may occur in one direction and growth in another during sintering. Even in long-time sintering experiments the rate of shrinkage may be different in different parts of the compact. In the fabrication of some parts requiring a constant permeability it is even questionable in some cases whether pressing from one direction should be attempted. These observations require for their interpretation a more detailed study of green or pressed density than has heretofore been available. Usually average density measurements of the whole compact are made and in some cases carefully cut sections are measured. A different approach to the problem was first mentioned by Rakowski1 and also used by Balshin.2 Balshin's diagram is reproduced in Fig r and schematically shows the result of pressing three layers of metal powder with fine intervening layers of graphite. The retarding effect of the die walls and a qualitative example of the density distribution is evident. More quantitative information about the distribution of density within a cold-pressed powder compact would be useful in showing the variation in density in compacts as influenced by the type of powder, shape of die, lubrication during the process, and other variables. Furthermore, information about the cracking of cold-pressed compacts may be obtained from an analysis of the stress distribution within a powder compact, and some information about the stress distribution can be obtained in turn from the density and strain distributions. A more detailed report on some of the present experiments appears in reference 3. PRESENT INVESTIGATION In order to ascertain the density gradients in cold-pressed metal powders, a deformable lead grid within the powder was employed. After pressing in cylindrical dies the ejected compact was radiographed, giving a pattern of the deformed grid. From the radiograph density and deformation from point to point is readily measured. From the radiograph strain distribution and stress trajectories were also determined. The latter also permits the determination of the coefficient of friction at the die wall. This technique indicates that the densest part of a compact pressed from one side is at the top outer circumference and the least dense region at the bottom circumference near the stationary plunger. For some heights of compacts the density at the axis is such that the lower density is at the top rather than at the bottom. So irregular a density distribution is due primarily to die-wall friction. As the ratio of diameter to height of compact is increased the die walls play a correspond¬ingly smaller role. More uniform density

Reduce respirable dust in coal preparation plants. Approach Survey a representative sample of coal preparation plants to (1) determine the dust problem extent, and (2) evaluate practical dust control techniques. Coal Preparation Plant Survey Results Of the approximately 500 coal preparation plants in the United States, 18 plants in six States were randomly selected for survey. The raw hourly capacities ranged from 250 to 1,250 tons, plant construction dates ranged from 1037 to 1982, and usually 3 to 10 workers were required per shift. Respirable dust concentrations within the plants surveyed ranged from very good (less than 1 mg/m') to very poor (14 mg/m3). No relationship was found between dust concentration and age or capacity of the plant. Six of the plants had long-term respirable dust concentrations between 7 and 14 mg/m' in specific areas; six had concentrations between 2.2 and 6.2 mg/m'. Except fur ventilation, only 4 of the 18 plants used operating dust control devices with mixed effectiveness.

Based on the relationships between severity measure vs. productivity and other factors, this paper presents a comprehensive analysis of US underground coal mine injuries in 1996 by mine size. From the 1996 data, it was concluded that, generally, the larger the mine, the more productive it is (in tons per employee-hour) but the more severe is its injury experience (r = 0.65). However, within very large, large and medium mines, the more productive the mine, the less severe is its injury experience (r = -0.43, - 0.36 and -0.26, respectively). For small and very small mines, a deeply nested analysis would be required to understand relationships. Other interesting relationships and comparisons are presented.

Mineral fillers have been defined as inert materials that are included in a composition for some useful purpose. Because this definition and the scope of this review are not specific-indeed, exceptions abound-accurate total statistics are unavailable. One source estimates the total production in the United States in 1979 at 11.3 Mt (12.5 million st) valued at $534 million, averaging $49.19 per ton. Included are a broad group of minerals-asbestos, barite, bentonite, ground limestone and dolomite, clays, diatomite, feldspar, micas, silica, talc. Additional references will be made to synthetic mineral-derived fillers such as aluminum hydrate, precipitated calcium carbonate, and pyrogenic and precipitated silicas and silicates. A section on related uses at the end of this chapter covers absorbents and filters. Mineral fillers can be included in compounds to accomplish a variety of final results. Hardness, brittleness, impact strength, compressive strength, softening point, fire resistance, surface texture, electrical conductivity, and a host of other physical characteristics may be modified by the inclusion of fillers. These effects are the result of properties of the fillers, including chemical activity, hardness, particle size, shape and distribution, surface structure, color, density, and refractive index. To facilitate an overview of the mineral filler industry, this chapter will review the general usage of fillers, the inherent characteristics that intensify their utilization, and similarly their manufactured characteristics. Major using industries will then be examined in detail. Specific information on deposits and processing for industrial minerals will be found in the appropriate commodity chapter. All of these same minerals have additional significant uses based on their chemical composition or other characteristics. References will be found in other use chapters and summarized in commodity chapters. The chart in Table 1, updated from the 4th edition of Industrial Minerals and Rocks, illustrates the major mineral fillers (both natural and manufactured) and their more important end uses. Use of Mineral Fillers Archaeologists have found that more than 5000 years ago, bitumen used for mortar and waterproofing contained mineral contaminants that acted as fillers. Since that time man has added mineral products to compounds to improve certain characteristics. Perhaps the most common objective of filler usage is reduction of cost of the end product. Certainly the inclusion of a filler that costs 2¢ per 0.45 kg (lb) will reduce the cost of a plastic product whose resin costs 50¢ per 0.45 kg (lb). But the decision to use a specific filler is not that simple. It may "soak up" binder, making a compound more viscous and perhaps preventing its flow into a mold as an injection molding compound, but similarly will give good anti-sag characteristics to putty, caulking compound, or undercoating. In this paper, the change of crystallization rate, dendrite arm spacing and dendrite width of mold flux with various magnetic field conditions were studied by experiment. Having found that the crystallization ratio of mold flux increased from 33 to 96.6%, the dendrite arm spacing decreased from 72.47 to 38.02 lm, the dendrite width decreased from 48.47 to 27.02 lm while the magnetic field frequency (f) equaled to 8 Hz and its strength (B) increased from 0 to 30 mT. The crystallization ratio of the mold flux increased from 91.9 to 96.1%, the dendrite arm spacing decreased from 60.53 to 28.08 lm,the dendrite width decreased from 42.53 to 24.08 lm when B equaled to 20 mT and f increased from 6 to 12 Hz. However, the XRD analysis indicated that the phase types of the mold flux under the experimental conditions did not transform. Results showed that an alternating magnetic field can promote the crystallization of mold flux and refine grain structure.

Based on lab and pilot-plant tests to recover gold, silver and lead of a Russian deposit, a collective and flotation concentration flow sheet with lead and sulfide concentrates was proposed. The type of the deposit is gold-sulfide-quartz-bearing. The recovery of gold, silver, and lead to a lead concentrate was 47.4%, 68.1% and 70.7%, respectively. The grade of gold and silver grade was 170 g/t and 372 g/t, respectively. The mass percent of lead, zinc and arsenic mass percent was 41.7%, 0.34% and 0.63%, respectively. The recovery of gold and silver recovery to a sulfide concentrate was 50.1% and 28.8% at the grade of gold 20.5 g/t and silver 66.2 g/t. Sulfide concentrate with arsenic mass percent ~3% was biooxidised followed by CIL and obtaining metal at the site as well as zinc concentrate from bioleaching solutions with zinc mass percent 45% at its 64% recovery. The total gold and silver recovery using a developed technology with the account of their treatment at a polymetallic plant was 92.2% and 93.7%, respectively.

In order to improve handling of subsidence damages the Illinois Mine Subsidence Insurance Fund supported the development of novel cost-effective methods of repair. The research in developing the repairs was directed towards the most common and costly damages that had been observed. As a result repair techniques were designed for structurally cracked foundations in the tension zone; structurally cracked foundations in the compression zone; and damaged or undamaged tilted foundations. When appropriate, the postulated methods would result in: 1. significant cost savings (over conventional procedures); 2. a structural capacity greater than when the foundation was untracked; and 3. an aesthetic appeal. All the postulated repair methodologies were laboratory and/or field tested. The paper will summarize the essentials of each technique developed and the test results.

The Minerals Availability Program of the Bureau of Mines conducts cost evaluations of current and potential mineral operations in the United States and foreign countries. The International Mining Cost Indexation System (IMCI) allows data of different time periods within a country to be updated to a common base year for analytical purposes. The IMCI comprises 12 factor cost indexes and an exchange rate series for 96 market economy countries, denominated in both local and U.S. currency. The IMCI for each country contains 12 time series indexes that measure the average annual rate of change in the cost of factor inputs to the mining industry within that country. Mining industry factor cost indexes include wages, plant and equipment, construction and mining materials, power and transportation, and other measures considered to comprise the majority of capital and operating costs. Cost data or proxies are collected in local currency. Index series within each country are constructed separately and indexed on a 1975 base year. The local currency index is converted to a U.S.-dollar-based currency index using an exchange ratio.

The explosion hazard of methane-air mixtures has become an increasingly serious mine planning problem, and an advance assessment of methane gas potential can therefore be essential for a safe and economic mine development pro- gram. As part of its coal mine health and safety program, the Bureau of Mines has developed a simple, inexpensive test to measure the methane content of coal samples obtained from exploration cores. The gas content of coal per unit weight as determined by the direct method test can be used as a basis for a preliminary estimate of mine ventilation requirements, and to determine if degasification of the coalbed in advance of mining should be considered. Since the Bureau began measuring the gas content of coal samples in 1972, experience has led to equipment and procedural changes, the most significant of which has been the development of a ball mill for crushing the coal sample to release the residual gas at the end of the desorption test period. This revised procedure replaces the crushing box and graphical methods described in earlier Bureau publications. The results of 583 direct method tests are summarized in tabular form. These results include data on the gas content of 125 coalbeds in 15 States.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is optimizing the design of an air-sparged hydrocyclone. This report summarizes the initial stage of the project-the prediction of collision efficiencies for use in a comprehensive air-sparged hydrocyclone model. The equations of motion are presented in nondimensional form and solved numerically for a small spherical particle passing around a larger bubble in an infinite fluid under the influence of a strong force field. Collision efficiencies are determined from the calculated particle trajectories for values of Stokes' number, K, between 0.01 and 100 and for values of the nondimensional force, W, between 0.0 and 100. These large values of K and Ware needed to model high-performance flotation devices like the air-sparged hydrocyclone; solutions for the required K and W values have not appeared in the literature prior to this study. Effects of changes in particle-to-bubble radius ratio are considered for both viscous and potential flows. The results help predict the improved recovery of fine particles when flotation is performed in a strong force field.

THAT the march of civilization has synchronized with progress in the art of utilizing minerals is a proposition that needs no proof. It is a truism. Historians conveniently divide the time that the earth has been inhabited into the Stone Age, the Bronze (more accurately the Copper) Age, and the Iron Age. As archeologists are not entirely in accord as to dates, and as a few centuries make no difference whatever to this particular story, it may be approximated that the Age of Copper began about 8000 years B.C. and that it gave place to the Age of Iron about 1000 years B.C. The logic of this succession-stone, copper, iron-lies in the fact that copper first displaced stone, then iron displaced copper as the standard material out of which the utensils, implements, and weapons, the utilitarian articles of antiquity, were made. After the advent of iron, the mining and smelting of copper continued. Copper and bronze found use particularly in objects of artistic and ornamental nature; but the superior qualities of iron for many purposes were recognized. Useful manufactures of those days consisted principally of knives, hammers, chisels, spear-heads, arrow-heads, and battle-axes. First these were made of stone, then of copper and bronze, then of iron-particularly as there was plenty of iron ore, and the metallurgy was comparatively easy of accomplishment. Of course, the periods of transition dragged slowly. Definite as were the three Ages dominated by the mineral substance from which they get their names, ten or fifteen centuries probably elapsed from the time the first iron was smelted in a small charcoal furnace until it became the accepted material from which to shape a battle-axe. Discussion of the paper of Edward Keller, presented at the Butte meeting, August, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 80, August, 1913, pp. 2093 to 2115. GEORGE L. HEATH, Hubbell, Mich.:-In the admirable paper quoted, is mentioned the date when the 5-g. assay was first proposed is a standard for refined metal. The author omitted, however, to mention a later paper,1 which contains a proposal for the use of a single " stock solution " of mixed acids, which has been adopted by the American Brass Co. and others. The suggestion is made that such a scheme would save time and manipulation with converter metal. Unless the low current of 0.5 ampere and the large excess of nitric acid, recommended by Mr. Keller, have been proved necessary to hold up antimony-and selenium, the use of the mixed solution which we have adopted will permit the use of 1 ampere of current per square decimeter of cathode surface, until the solutions have become colorless. At this point, we wash the covers and reduce to 0.5 ampere to prevent oxidation or contamination. The ordinary split electrodes have been used. With strong current, at least, the use of an excess of nitric acid tends to the neutralization of the solution before the end of the period, from the formation of too much ammonia., and this is detrimental. Antimony deposits more easily than arsenic, and tends to drag the latter dorm with it. There must, be some such explanation for the fact. that we have made hundreds of deposits of pure cathodes from Lake material containing no antimony, but as. high as 0.5 per cent. of arsenic. By placing an assay beaker in the Frary solenoid, or rotary device, a cathode deposit with less than 0.01 per cent. of impurity is easily obtained in one operation from 3 g. of whitneyite, carrying from 7 to 10 per cent. of arsenic. In such a case, it is necessary to test several times for end point and remove the plate as soon as no brown tint appears (at once) when hydrogen sulphide water is added to the test portion on the spot plate.
