THERE are two general approaches to the problem of increasing profits from an operation. One is to lower expense; the other is to raise income. Mechanical preparation of coal may be used for either purpose but a prudent consideration of many details must precede any decision lest the results be negative instead of positive. It is quite possible that any net gain will result from a combination of the two. Since mechanically prepared coal invariably is a better product qualitatively than a hand-picked coal from the same mine, it is a reason¬able expectation that the customer will be willing to increase the pro¬ducer's income by paying a higher price. Or there may be the possibility that a combination of mechanical mining plus mechanical cleaning will give a lower over-all production cost for the coal in the railroad car. More likely, there will be found a combination of these two factors. From the customer's point of view, the competitive delivered cost per B.t.u. considered in relation to such incidental factors as dust nuisance, handling properties, ash disposal, and ash fusibility determines what he will pay. In a bulk tonnage product such as coal, freight is a very considerable part of the delivered fuel cost, and obviously freight paid on incombustible ash has no economic attractions.

In view of the state of the long time use of sodium cyanide in lead-zinc-sulfur-silver multimetallic ore production, we propose alternative reagents system through experimental research. The experiment first used TJ, sodium sulfide to adjust the flotation pulp, after that, zinc sulfate, sodium sulfite was added to low alkaline pulp to inhibiting zinc sulfur mineral and adapted MB, 25# aerofloat and diethyl dithiocarbamate combination collectors to float lead minerals. The obtained test index is as follows: lead concentrate recovery rate of small scale test was increased by 5 to 10%, the recovery rates of gold and silver in lead concentrate were increased by 7% and 11% respectively; the industrial test is conducted under the condition that the total grade of lead and zinc content in raw ore decreased by 4.81%, the total recovery rate of lead and zinc increased by 7%, recovery rates of gold and silver in lead concentrate were increased by 7.62% and 9.65% respectively. So it successfully realizes the target to replace the sodium cyanide, using low-alkaline non-toxic reagents system in mineral processing practice of three kinds of complex lead-zinc-sulfur ore of this mine. INTRODUCTION Conditions for formation of porphyry copper deposits appear to have been propitious in the Appalachian orogen from the end of Precambrian into Middle Ordovician, and again from Middle Devonian into Mississippian. In the Appalachians we can now record the evolution of a porphyry copper province within a developing orogen, one that reached metamorphic and structural maturity by the end of Devonian. Fig. 15, after Irwin and Coleman (1972), locates that portion of the Appalachian orogen included in this study, and Fig. 16 illustrates general geology of the area. Deposits mentioned in Table 3 and in the text are shown in Fig. 16. Data presented summarize personal observations by the author, published descriptions of specific areas noted in the bibliography, and abstracts from Provincial assessment files. Sources of previously published data are acknowledged. Few comprehensive descriptions of individual porphyry copper deposits in this area exist, so much of the data presented is new to the literature. Porphyry mineralization has, for this chapter, been restricted to porphyry copper de- posits, although porphyry molybdenum de- posits (Clark, 1972) are also shown in Fig. 16 (Hollister, et al., 1974). Copper- molybdenum and tungsten-molybdenum skarns are also omitted to simplify discu sion, though each is known in the area studied. Gaspe Copper is included, however; min- eralization in this deposit is present in the intrusion as well as in the skarn adjacent (Bell and Scott, 1954). Porphyry deposits listed in Table 3 are included because of some important feature, although other deposits have been reported (e.g., Kirkham and Soregaroli, 1975 ) . Clearly, no table now compiled could be complete. The pace of exploration insures that new occurrences will probably be found. Summaries of features exhibited by intrusions shown in Table 3 should remain valid, however, since they appear representative and are based on an adequate number of deposits in the area studied. Paleozoic porphyry copper prospects (shown in Fig. 16) are more common, apparently, in the northeastern part of the orogen, rarely having been found south of Catheart or west of the Logan Line. The ?AMIRA Metal Accounting Project? had its origin in a workshop held in Cape Town on 1 August 2001, with the title ?Challenges in Metal Accounting and Information Management?, which was organised by the Western Cape Branch of the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. This workshop identified the lack of an accepted set of standard procedures for metallurgical accounting as an industry-wide problem. Discussions which followed this workshop led to the initiation of the AMIRA Project P754, ?Improving Metal Accounting?, in 2003. The primary objective of the project was to provide tools for improving the auditability and transparency of metal accounting from mine to product and to facilitate good corporate governance. The planned deliverables of the project were a series of research projects into aspects of metal balancing in different types of metallurgical operations, a Code of Practice on Metal Accounting, and a textbook on the subject which could serve as a guide for metal accounting practitioners and students studying the topic. An additional planned deliverable was the provision of a new variety of professional experts in metal accounting, through successful completion of the research projects. Researchers were engaged at the Universities of Cape Town, Queensland and Stellenbosch and the project was sponsored by five mining companies, including three of the largest global mining groups. Research Program Eight research projects were undertaken as part of the P754 project and these are described briefly here to indicate the scope of the project. University of Cape Town ?Development of a methodology for measurement network design for metallurgical accounting at Namakwa Sands?. This project was based on the Namakwa Sands Separation Plant, with a data rich environment, and involved the investigation of measurement network design through the use of heuristics and the analysis of complex processing circuits. An industry-wide survey of current practice to facilitate the development of an expert system for plant accounting measurements was carried out. ?Metallurgical accounting design at the Waterval UG-2 Concentrator?. The objective of this project is to develop a model for predicting metal recoveries from the different components of a blended ore feed to a plant. ?Optimal measurement network design for metallurgical accounting at Zincor?. This project provided a hydrometallurgical test case for the design and evaluation of a semi-automated optimal measurement network. This project involved a case study at North Parkes Mine, in which copper and gold ore is tracked from the pit source to the product, as well as a stockpile modelling study. This report describes the exploration and recent utilization studies the Bureau of Mines conducted on the Iron King, Chambers, and Dry Camp chromite deposits in the John Day district, Grant County, Oreg. The field investigations were undertaken during parts of 1939 and 1942 to determine the tonnage and grade of chromite in the district that could be utilized as a war reserve for the steel industry. As a result of the Bureau's field work, which included construction of 9 miles of access road, 6,204 feet of diamond drilling, 195 channel samples, and 1,020 linear feet of trenching, an ore reserve of 208,000 tons of 22-percent chromic oxide was indicated in the 3 deposits. Less than 1,000 tons of this ore has been mined since the field work was completed because the 2 largest deposits are submarginal in grade and there is as yet no incentive to develop and mine the ore. Since the war, however, the Bureau has been seeking means of utilizing the ore. Two methods of utilization that show promise are direct smelting of the ore in an electric furnace and use of the chromite for making refractory brick.

The paper is introduced by some general comments on the Electrolytic Zinc Company West Coast Mines operations. An outline of the geology of the Rosebery Mine orebodies preced- es a resume of the mining methods used prior to the current mechanization programme. The reasons for the introduction of longhole stoping techniques are given together with a brief explanation of both sublevel longhole and longhole stoping methods. The application of remotely controlled loaders within these stoping methods is discussed. A description of the remote control mechanisms, used on Atlas Copco 310 and 511 Cavo loaders, is followed by comments on these mechanisms from both a maintenance and production viewpoint. A summary of perform- ance statistics and operator safety records vindicate the selection of remotely controlled loaders for the longhole stoping areas at Rosebery Mine.

Under the impetus of new demands caused by the war, the oil and gas industries of Kansas established new records during the year 1942. In all, 1513 test wells were drilled, which is somewhat of a drop from the figure of 2113 for 1941. The 1513 tests yielded 800 new oil wells, 85 new gas wells, and 628 dry holes. Thus there was an increase in two categories, the gas wells and the dry holes. Considering that last year only 592 dry holes were completed out of a much larger total, the figure of 628 dry holes causes some concern among local operators. The increase in unsuccessful tests illustrates once more the fact that each year it is becoming harder to find the remaining oil pools. When the figures are broken down, it appears that western Kansas accounted for 1177 tests, of which 689 were oil wells, 33 gas wells, and 455 dry holes. The total potential daily initial production uncovered by the successful wells amounted to 753,178 bbl. of oil and 619,734,000 cu. it. of gas. The figures for new initial production indicate a substantial drop from last year's figure of 1,691,000 bbl., and the figures on gas are slightly higher. In 1941 the new gas as based on a daily potential was 508,000,-000 cu. ft. In eastern Kansas, 336 wells were drilled. Among these in were oil wells, accounting for a daily initial potential production of 16,199 bbl. The new gas wells numbered 52 and added 253,725,000 cu. ft. per day to the gas potential production of the state. The remaining tests, 173 in number, were dry. It is interesting and perhaps significant that about half (630) of the wells drilled in western Kansas were drilled by the independent operators. Among the large companies, the Cities Service Oil Co. drilled 163 wells; the Stanolind Oil and Gas Co., 52; the Skelly Oil Co., 39; the Continental Oil Co., 48; and the Shell Petroleum Co., 21 wells. In eastern Kansas the independent operators drilled 297 out of the total of 336 wells. Among the major oil companies the Cities Service Oil Co. drilled 19; the Phillips Petroleum Co. 7; and the Sinclair-Prairie Oil Co., 6 wells. The figures based on relative percentages of dry holes to successful oil or gas wells are revealing. In western Kansas almost one half of all wells drilled by the independent operators were dry holes. The major oil companies drilled approximately 547 wells in western Kansas, of which 379 were successful in finding either oil or gas. It thus appears that the major companies fared better than the independents. In eastern Kansas the major companies drilled 39 wells, of which 29 were successful in finding commercial quantities of oil or of gas. No less than 329 wildcat test holes were put down in western Kansas and 105 in eastern Kansas, or 434 in all, during 1942. Considerably more than half of these were drilled by independent operators; 223 in western and 99 in eastern Kansas. An exploratory hole 56 mile or more from production is regarded as a wildcat well in Kansas. On a percentage basis, about 80 per cent of wildcat wells were failures. Of the several characteristics of a coal that influence its suitability for use in a given piece of burning equipment, the clinkering and slagging characteristics of the ash of the coal are highly important. They determine the maximum rate at which the coal may be burned on a stoker or in pulverized form without difficulty from damage to metal parts, from erosion of refractory walls, or from stoppage of gas passages by accumulation on the tubes. They also determine the minimum rate at which a slag-tap furnace may be operated without difficulty in removal of the ash in fluid form. Need for a Better Criterion In common with other producers and users of coal, the Northern Illinois Coal Corporation has long used the available methods for the measurement of the clinkering characteristics of coal ash, chemical composition and fusion temperature of the ash, as criteria for the selection of coal that would suit the particular requirements of its customers. These two available criteria have greatly helped in the problem of selection but it is unnecessary to dwell upon the fact that they are not completely adequate for the purpose. The composition of the ash and its clinkering tendency vary widely over the company's mining area. In a certain period, some years ago, an unusual amount of severe clinkering of the ash of coal shipped made extremely acute the need for a better criterion of the clinkering that might be expected. It was also desirable that the criterion result from a reasonably rapid method, so that the clinkering characteristics of the coal would be known before shipment. Complaints on the severe clinkering of the ash came from only a fraction of the output of the mine but the occurrence of the clinkering seemed quite unpredictable. Attempts to relate the chemical composition of the ash and the fusion temperatures to the clinkering were unsuccessful. Coal from the area of the mine in which the fusion temperature of the ash was the lowest gave the least trouble from clinker-ing. Chemical analysis of the ash from that section giving the most trouble showed high contents of iron and low contents of silica, but frequently these were not greatly different from those of coals that gave little trouble from clinker. Aside from the clinkering difficulty, the coal was quite satisfactory. The ash content was normal and high rates of burning could be obtained, but again and again such severe clinkering would occur that the furnace would be shut down because of the accumulation of clinker. Examination of the clinker from the customers' plants showed that the clinkers that adhered to the grates and fouled the fuel beds were hard, flat, dense, and usually dark in color. Coal that was satisfactory gave clinkers that were softer, bulky rather than flat, of low density, and usually lighter in color.

For slope stability, knowledge of major and minor discontinuity sets that form the rock mass fabric is paramount for pit slope designs. Due to the increased awareness of health and safety in mining projects, efforts have been made to limit structural mapping in order to minimize the risk to personnel associated with approaching potentially unstable areas. Recognizing the importance of such safety precautions, Golder Associates Ltd. is applying a combination of techniques including 3D photogrammetry, conventional mapping and drilling with core orientation to enhance structural data collection. Photogrammetry uses digital photographs to produce a virtual model of a rock mass surface. The application of these techniques will be exemplified through an expansion design of an existing open pit. A comparison of stereonets obtained using these techniques showed some agreements, but also highlighted limitations of each method. The application of photogrammetry was found to be very useful in complementing the other existing techniques.

This paper on the square-set system of mining embodies the results of a special study of the subject made as a part of the Bureau of Mines general investigation of mining methods and costs. Data for the paper were gathered by the authors during visits to mines using square-set mining, from Information Circulars prepared by consulting engineers to the Bureau on mining methods at individual mines, and from articles in the technical press and the Transactions of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. The square-set system of mining is very widely applied and is one of the oldest methods in use in the United States. It is mainly employed for extracting relatively high-grade ore in heavy ground. It is also useful in taking out pillars left in mining by other methods. It is used to some extent as an auxiliary method with many underground systems and as an alternate with cut-and-fill, shrinkage, and open-stope methods when heavy ground is encountered. In some cases as much as 50 per cent of the ore may be extracted by square-setting at mines listed as using some other method of mining. A large tonnage is mined yearly by square-setting, principally in the Western States.

The proportional limit of iron crystals in torsion is governed by the resolved shear stress in the most highly stressed slip systems, averaged around the specimen circumference, and does not obey a critical resolved shear stress law. Crystals of most orientations exhibit a stage of easy plastic deformation, akin to easy glide in tensile or shear specimens. Transient deformation, similar to that which occurs in single crystals of other materials, is also observed. THE torsional deformation of single crystals of magnesium (hcp) and aluminum (fcc) has been described recently by Choi et al.,&apos; especially with respect to the criterion for the orientation dependence of the onset of plastic flow in these materials. The purpose of this paper is to present results of torsion tests of iron single crystals and thus to extend this yield criterion to a bcc metal. In addition to considering the variation of proportional limit with crystal orientation, this paper also briefly treats work hardening, transient deformation, and the mechanism of plastic flow in iron. The effects of the method of surface polishing and the chemical purity of the iron have been investigated. STRESS DISTRIBUTION It is convenient to express the stress at any point of a cylindrical crystal stressed in torsion in terms of t0, which is the shear stress acting at the surface on a plane normal to the axis of the cylinder and in a direction tangential to the cylinder. This stress is given by To = 2T/pr3 [1] where T is the applied torque and r the specimen radius. The shear stress t, resolved in any chosen slip system is given in terms of 7, by1 Ts/TO = sin 0, cos d sin (0, -) + cos , sin d sin d - ) [2] where 0 and d are the angles between the specimen axis and the slip plane normal and slip direction, respectively; h is the angular circumferential position on the specimen at which t, is being determined, measured from an arbitrary reference plane which includes the axis;o and d are the angular coordinates of the projections of the slip plane normal and slip direction on a transverse section with respect to this same reference plane. Slip in iron occurs in a <1ll> direction on the {ll0}, (1121, and (123) planes, which together comprise 48 slip systems. A complete evaluation of the stress distribution in an iron crystal stressed in torsion would therefore require a calculation of Ts/T0 as a function of for 48 different slip systems. Fortunately Gough,&apos;who studied the behavior of iron crystals in alternating torsion, was able to simplify this problem considerably. He showed that it was sufficient to consider a kind of average slip plane for each slip direction, namely the mathematical plane of maximum resolved shear stress containing the slip direction considered. This simplifying approximation is possible because, for each slip direction, the active slip plane or planes lie very near this mathematical plane of maximum shear stress. Vogel and rick&apos; have critically reviewed the early work of Taylor and Elam,13 Taylor,14 and Fahrenhorst and schmid8 from which the identification of the above crystallographic planes as slip planes in the bcc lattice largely stems. While their criticism is clearly justified, their own results do little to clarify the issue. The role of cross slip (screw dislocations changing glide planes) is evidently so important in this case, as Read3 has suggested, that methods for deducing slip systems from observations of gross slip traces are inadequate, such traces commonly arising from complex dislocation motion. Thus the treatment given here involving the plane of maximum resolved shear stress seems a logical simplification especially in view of Gough&apos;s2 study of a iron. There is, however, an assumption built into the subsequent treatment the comparative validity of which is difficult to assess, namely, that slip in all slip systems in iron may be characterized by a common critical resolved shear stress. The shear stress 7, resolved in a slip direction defined by d andd, and on the plane of maximum shear stress containing this direction, is found by first maximizing 7s/70 with respect to either Oo or 4,. The slip plane coordinates are then eliminated by using the relation between 0, ,o and d, d, namely,

Norwich Park Mine commenced production of export coking coal in November 1979. Attention to consumables control was limited during the early running of the plant. Once higher than anticipated magnetite consumption levels were confirmed, efforts were directed at determining the causes. Extensive plant sampling, monitor- ing of operational procedures and plant modif- ications have led to a significant reduction in magnetite usage.

Introduction There has been much publicity of the boom and bust in oil and gas well drilling in the US, and many comments on oil and gas gluts. Despite this, the drilling industry remains the largest consumer of functional industrial minerals. The boom years of 1981 and 1982, compared with the bust year of 1983, show a sharp reduction in the consumption of industrial minerals-1981, 7.4Mt (8.2 million st); 1982, 6.3 Mt (7 million st); and 1983, 4.4 Mt (4.9 million st). Industrial mineral use rebounded in 1984 to 4.7 Mt (5.2 million st). This was the second highest year in history in terms of wells drilled and third highest in footage drilled. Table 1 shows the history of drilling activity and mineral consumption from 1971 to 1984. The uses of functional industrial minerals in oil and gas well drilling were detailed by Miles and Blair (ME, 1983, October, pp. 1397-1400). As an update, this article addresses only the changes that have occurred in the industry in the past two-and-a-half years. It will be directed to mineral use and new products introduced to the industry. Drilling practices A partial explanation of where wells are being drilled with lower quantities of minerals consumed is: • In the boom year of 1981, there was a proliferation of number of suppliers chasing the same business. This resulted in multiple sourcing, multiple warehousing, and a huge increase in inventory that became surplus in the following years. The bust year, 1983, caused a severe shakeout in the number of suppliers of minerals and associated drilling fluids. • In 1981 and 1982, the wild speculation in the oil and gas industry led to drilling of speculative deep gas wells. Oil wells were drilled on a wildcat basis - in areas of unproven productivity. • Presently, the oil and gas well drilling industry is very active. But drilling is directed toward proven areas of production and working over old wells for increased production. This means a large number of wells are being drilled with lower average foot-

On the western continental shelf of southern Africa diamonds derived from onshore sources are concentrated in gravels within drowned terrestrial and marine geomorphological features. First discovered offshore in the late 1950&apos;s, they are known to exist for about 1400 km along the Namibian and South African coast in water depths of up to 200 m. Shallow water operations yielded 1.5 Mct during the decade ending 1970 when De Beers acquired a majority of the offshore leases and commenced a 15 year exploration program. Deeper water and the prevailing sea conditions required the development of new, unique, marine mining equipment. The first large scale mining production of 22 kct was achieved by De Beers in 1989 with an output of 22 kct. Annual marine output from all sources now exceeds 0.6 Mct worth some US.$ 170 M, and rising to 0.7-0.8 Mct for 1998. Exploration has also been taking place in the waters of West Africa, Australia, and Indonesia. Exploration is by means of high resolution geophysics followed by sampling using a variety of drills, airlifts and seabed-mounted machines which imitate the eventual mining process. Surveying is now probing depths of 500 m. Smaller scale mining by several junior companies has traditionally involved diving and airlift systems. Increasingly, however, they are adopting different and improved techniques which to date have been employed only by De Beers Marine as contractor to Namdeb. Marine exploration and unit mining costs are high compared to those applicable to alluvial deposits onshore. By 1996 the total development costs incurred by De Beers alone reportedly had exceeded US.$ 500 M. However, the financial rewards are commen-surate because of the higher recovered grades. The operations are not without risk for the total of nearly 10 large and medium scale production vessels deployed by various organisations. The greatest shortfalls are experienced in the estimated throughput, not the grade.

MR. J. J. CRARON: If Ross Weber rings that bell of his, I think I have a few secrets on him that I will tell. It is not such a long time ago when the sales and executive departments of the coal industry were constantly urging the operating department to increase their output, and this cry for increased production resulted in vast development work and increased capacity to the point where the operating departments are today in position to produce coal upon sudden demand far in excess of the ability of their sales departments to dispose of it. So today our ability to produce coal is away ahead of our ability to market it. There are many reasons, of course, for this condition. First, the present economic situation, which has prevented even a normal consumption of coal. Secondly, the over-development and production of every commodity and industry as the result of war time and post-war time prosperity. Thirdly, the inroads made by competitive fields, particularly oil and gas, because of the desire of the public for automatic heat.
