This report describes the preparation characteristics of the significant coalbeds in Nicholas County, W. Va. It is one in a series describing coals suitable for producing metallurgical coke, either as mined or after beneficiation. Almost 5 million tons of coal were produced in Nicholas County, W. Va., in 1960, of which over 2.6 million tons were cleaned in eight preparation plants. It has been estimated that over 6 billion tons remained in the county as of December 31, 1960, in beds 12 inches and more thick.

The Sukari project, which is owned by Centamin Egypt Ltd, is located in southern Egypt, 770 km south of Cairo but close to the Red Sea. The project is the first new gold development in Egypt and was commissioned in the middle of 2009. In 2007, Centamin purchased the CIL plant from the Kori Kollo mine in Bolivia. This plant was originally designed to treat 6.5 Mtpa of oxide ore. The Sukari deposit contains an oxide zone close to surface with a thick zone of mixed oxide and sulphides below this. The sulphides contain relatively coarse pyrite and arsenopyrite with fine <10 µm gold inclusions. Eventually, the sulphide ore will be mined from underground. Metplant Engineering Pty Ltd, a subsidiary of Bateman Engineering Pty Ltd was contracted to design modifications and additions to the Kori Kollo plant to enable it to treat the Sukari ores. The plant was designed to treat the three ore types in stages. Throughput was set to 4 Mtpa, dueto Sukari ore being harder, at a head grade of 1.7 g/t to produce 200 000 oz of gold. The oxide circuit was based on the use of the Kori Kollo plant and the difference with mixed ore was that the oxide circuit would treat flotation tailings rather than ore. This circuit has a leach capacity of 26 000 m3 and residence time of 24 hrs The main feature of the upgraded mixed ore plant was the addition of a flotation circuit to produce a concentrate which would be reground and treated in a separate leach and elution circuit. Ore is crushed in a gyratory crusher and the comminution circuit uses a conventional SABC producing a product with a P80 of 150 microns. The throughput of 580 tph of oxide ore and 500tph of mixed ore was set to match the mills from Kori Kollo, with the addition of the pebble crusher to accommodate the more competent Sukari ore. The flotation circuit comprises a single rougher circuit to maximize recovery. The concentrate is thickened prior to regrinding which is carried out in a tower mill and two SMD mills operating in series. The final product, with a P80 of 12 microns, from the regrind circuit is leached in a CIL circuit with a total capacity of 2 550 m3. Gold is recovered through a conventional pressure Zadra circuit. Tailings from both circuits report to separate tailings thickeners and are pumped to a tailings storage facility. The circuit is designed to maximize the recovery of water. The project lies in one of the driest deserts in the world and a feature of the operation is the use of sea water from the Red Sea. This water is pumped 25 km from the coast.

Magnetic separation is routinely used in the processing of titanium minerals, and the efficiency of these operations can be determined by measuring the magnetic properties of the process streams. The valuable components in the feed to a titanium minerals plant have specific magnetic susceptibilities ranging from -10-9 m3 kg-1 (zircon) to 10-6 m3 kg-1 (ilmenite). However, in an industrial environment, in which the mineral temperature may range from 20 to 120¦C, it is difficult to measure susceptibilities lower than about 10-7 m3 kg-1. Hence laboratory testing of spot samples from magnetic separators is currently required to obtain accurate performance data. This is an inherently slow process and where feed grades are variable, optimum performance of magnetic separators is generally not achieved. This paper describes the development of an inductance-based instrument for measuring very low levels of magnetic susceptibility on-line. The signal from the instrument can be used for process control purposes to maintain optimum magnetic separator performance. A prototype instrument has been installed in the zircon scavenger circuit in an Australian titanium minerals plant. The circuit consists of a roll magnetic separator treating a feed consisting mainly of monazite and stained zircon. The monazite-rich magnetic fraction is returned to the mine site for disposal, while the non-magnetic fraction is recycled to the zircon wet circuit. Splitter positions in the separator are adjusted when the final zircon product fails to meet specification, or the magnetic fraction contains more than 30 per cent zircon. Weekly composite grain counts show that sub-optimal operation of the magnetic separator results in significant zircon losses into the magnetics fraction. Using the instrument, the zircon content of this stream can now be accurately determined from the measured magnetic susceptibility, provided a correction for the effect of mineral temperature is applied using the Curie - Weiss relationship.

Jigging is a process of particle stratification in which the particle re- arrangement results from an alternate expansion and compaction of a bed of particles by pulsating fluid flow. The vertical direction of fluid flow is reversed periodically. The rearrangement results in layers of particles that are arranged by increasing density from top to bottom of the bed. This response, developed from the many and continuously varying forces acting upon the particles, permits a solid-solid separation more related to particle density and less to particle size than any other "hydraulic-type" process. The stratification is usually carried out in a rectangular, open-top container called a jig, in which the mass of particles (termed a "bed") is supported on a perforated base through which the water flows in alternating directions. The coal particles, in addition to the vertically expanded and compacted bed motion, move continuously, horizontally across the supporting screen. Following the particle stratification, the particle bed is physically "cut" at a desired horizontal particle density plane to separate the desired clean coal product from the more dense refuse. The jig system includes means for continuously introducing the raw coal and for moving the water through the coal bed in a controllable manner, as well as for separating and removing the stratified particles from the system as two or more product streams. In coal preparation, this highly versatile unit operation is applied preferably to a wide size range of particles with top sizes up to 8 in. (20 cm) rather than to a closely sized fraction. In gravity ranges, the process has been applied to gold particles with a density of 19.3 and to coal particles having densities less than 1.30. Single jig washers have capacities from 5 (4.6) to greater than 700 tph (637 t/h) of feed coal. The separation results attainable by jigging have favored this unit operation as optimum for creating a clean coal product as required by steam coal specifications. Al- though the jig is used in preparing coals which are difficult to separate, its limitations to achieve both quality products and high recovery are being recognized in comparison with heavy media-based processes which make sharper separations from feeds having high "near-gravity" contents. The accu- racy of the densimetric stratification in the upper portions of the jig bed are less precise. It follows that coals with more than 10% near-gravity material

OUTPUT of carbon black in 1959 increased in all producing States except New Mexico. The national increase was 20 percent. Domestic sales and exports increased 22 percent and 16 percent, respectively, resulting in a 21 percent gain in sales. Sales to the rubber industry, which purchased 95 percent of the domestic output of carbon black, increased 23 percent. Sales to all other major consumers also increased. Copper and gold were discovered in the Copper Canyon area of the Battle Mountain district of Lander County, Nevada, in August of 1866. By 1876 a gravity plant was con¬centrating oxidized Copper Canyon copper-gold ores. The history of mining in the district to 1967 has been summarized by John E. Frost (in press) as a case history of the discovery of the Battle Mountain porphyry copper deposits. His summary is not repeated here; rather, the present case history covers exploration since 1967, primarily for gold ores. Subsequent to the construction by Duval of facilities to mine the porphyry copper deposits in 1967, Duval established a geologic staff at the mine to continue district exploration. The staff was guided by David W. Blake, who acted as chief geologist for Duval&apos;s exploration in this part of Nevada. Blake&apos;s activities led to the publication of numerous technical articles, including his contribution to the US Geological Survey Professional Paper 798-B. A part of that volume is attached as a reprint (pages 23 through 66) as an explanation of the geological setting of mineralization in the district. The work by Blake and his staff recognized metal zonation in the skarn environment at Copper Canyon, and their studies were incorporated in the development of the Tomboy-Minnie gold deposits that are peripheral to the porphyry. Exploration continued beyond the immediate vicinity of the porphyry and the Fortitude ore zones were discovered. These skarn deposits are described in the attached article by Wotruba, Benson, and Schmidt, published in the July 1986, MINING ENGINEERING. The continued exploration successes at Battle Mountain reflect on the well organized and effective exploration team developed at the mine. The team has provided successive discoveries in a district known mostly for ore bodies that are exhausted in a few years&apos; time.

Following unprecedented high market prices for tin and gold in 1980, significant advances in both mining technology and geological knowledge took place in northeast Queensland. These led to a rapid growth in mining activity. Production of these traditional metals reached levels comparable to those of the heyday of mining activity at the turn of the century.Although tin and tungsten prices have since collapsed, the geological knowledge gained and significant discoveries made during the boom, have created a potential for mine development when prices rise again. For other discoveries which are not workable because of treatment problems, future technological advances are required to raise their potential.

A rural mail route passes within quarter of a mile of the mine. Paved reads from Heflin lead to Atlanta, Birmingham, and Montgomery. The country Toads leading from Heflin are well-maintained but are practically inaccessible during inclement weather. The road crossing the property within a hundred yards of the mine needs grading and repairing (see fig. 1)."

"ForewordA symposium on base metal deposits was held in Bathurst, New Brunswick, from June 10-13, 1990, sponsored jointly by the Geological Surveys Branch of the New Brunswick Department of Natural Resources and Energy, the New Brunswick Prospectors and Developers Association, and the Geology Division of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum. Papers prepared for the symposuim are being published as a series of articles in the CIM Bulletin. This third paper (the first was by Fyffe, et al., in Vol. 83, No. 938, the second is in this issue) in the series presents an overview of the tectonic setting and geochemistry of base metal deposits in the Eastern Townships of Quebec.ABSTRACTIt is well known that the classification system of volcanogenic massive sulphides (VMS) is based upon their metal content. This metal content, the result of hydrothermal solutions circulating within strata underlying the deposits, is generally thought to be related directly to two parameters: (1) the nature of the underlying stratigraphic sequence; and (2) the physico-chemical conditions that existed at the time of the hydrothermal event. Furthermore, these two parameters are, in turn, related to the tectonic setting. One must bear in mind that these parameters are diachronous and evolve with time. These factors are considered in our analysis of the major VMS deposits of the southeastern Quebec Appalachians. This analysis will describe the time and environment of formation of these deposits and integrate them into an evolving paleotectonic model.VMS deposits in the southeastern Quebec Appalachians formed during three distinct metallogenic episodes. During the first episode, which involved early closing of the Iapetus Ocean and associated destruction of oceanic crust by subduction processes(Early Ordovician?), cupriferous VMS deposits hosted by pillowed, mafic (boninitic) lava flows were formed in immature island-arc systems (""Cyprus-type"", e.g. Huntingdon deposit).In the second episode, which also occurred during the closure of Iapetus but at a later stage (Early to Middle Ordovician), mature island-arcs formed and hosted polymetallic VMS deposits (""Kuroko-type"", e.g. Eustis deposit).Finally, during culmination of the Taconic and/or Acadian orogenies (Middle Ordovician and/or Devonian), transtensional basins, associated with tholeitic to transitional mafic volcanism began to develop. Major sedimentation occurred contemporaneous with volcanism, and within this framework polymetallic VMS deposits were formed (""Besshi-type"", e.g. the Memphremagog deposit).Although incomplete, the proposed paleotectonic model represents the sequence of the tectonic settings that prevailed during the formation of the VMS deposits of the southeastern Quebec Appalachians."

Transmission-electron micrographs of electro-thinned samples of bulk-aged Cu-3.1 pet Co alloy show an aging sequence, supersaturated solid solution — coherent particles — quasi -coherent particles — noncoherent particles. Hardening is due to precipitation of coherent spherical fee coball-rich particles showing coherency strain fields, which are resolved at between 15 and 30A diameter. Loss of- full coherency did not occur until well into the overaged region, even with the assistance of deformation after aging. Different average particle diameters of 123, 92, and 149 ± 10Å were observed in samples aged to peak yield strength at 600°, 650°, and 700°C, respectively, indicating that there is no critical size for peak hardening. Noncoherent particles tended to develop (111) faces and became octahedral in shape. Dislocations tended to nucleate spherical coherent particles which eventually grew together forming large elongated particles. The surface energy of a noncoherent (low-angle) inter-phase boundary is estimated to he about 50 ergs per sq cm. A number of particle lining-up phenomena were observed. Overaging is principally attributed to increase in particle spacing, progressive loss of coherency, and increase in amount of discontinzdous precipitation. COPPER dissolves about 5.6 at. pet (5.2 wt pet) of cobalt at 1110oC1 and the solubility decreases to 0.75 at. petl (0.54 at. pet)2 at 650°C and to 0.1 at. pet or less at lower temperature.&apos; It has been known for many years3-5 that Cu-Co alloys are capable of age hardening. Since cobalt is fee above 417°C and its atom size is only about 2 pet smaller than that of copper, precipitation of coherent particles would be expected. The equilibrium phase precipitated at 700°C and below contains about 10 pet Cu in solution which tends to stabilize the fee structure, lowering the transformation temperature to 340oc.l The alloy is known to undergo discontinuous precipitation in addition to general precipitation; while the former can be seen with an optical microscope, the latter precipitates are not visible except in the grosly overaged condition.5, 6 Extensive use has therefore been made of the ferromagnetic properties of the precipitate in order to follow the course of aging, and it has proved possible to measure the average particle size, spacing, approximate shape, and volume fraction and to determine that the particles are coherent without ever seeing a particle (see for example Refs. 2, 7, and 8). The magnetic measurements of particle size are limited to diameters below about 120Å.7 The present study was undertaken using the techniques of transmission-electron microscopy in order to check the above conclusions, to extend the previous magnetic work to larger particle sizes, and to attempt a more detailed correlation of properties and structure. A portion of this work has already been published.9-11 The present paper is concerned with the metallographic features of precipitation in relation to aging curves. Bonar and Kelly12&apos;13 have published preliminary results of a similar study on single crystals of Cu-2 at. pet Co. EXPERIMENTAL Preparation of Alloy. A Cu-Co alloy, containing 3.12 wt pet (3.36 at. pet) Co by analysis, was prepared from 99.999 pet purity oxygen-free copper and electrolytic-grade cobalt. The alloy was melted and cast in vacuo in a high-frequency furnace using a graphite crucible and mold: Analysis showed chat 0.004 pet C was picked up during melting. The 1-1/2-lb ingot was homogenized in hydrogen for 24 hr at 1000°C. Slices were cold-rolled to 0.005 or 0.003 in. thickness, with an intermediate 650°C anneal in hydrogen at 0.080 in. thickness. Batches of six to ten strips were solution-treated in sealed-off quartz tubes in high vacuum in a vertical furnace and quenched by dropping into iced brine containing a device which snapped off the nose of the tube. Solution treatment consisted of 1 hr at 990°C or 2 hr at 965°C. The latter was employed for all mechanical-property studies, since a tendency was noted for the higher temperature to give porous material. Strips were usually aged individually in a horizontal vacuum furnace, inserting into the hot zone and withdrawing into a cold zone without breaking the vacuum. This method gave a rapid heating rate, permitting the use of short aging times. The flow of liquids through porous media is known to follow Darcy&apos;s law which states that the velocity of flow is proportional to the pressure gradient. This law is but a statement of the facts obtained from experimental studies and is, therefore, uncontroversial. It should be men-tioned, however, that it applies only when the flow is viscous in nature and that at excessive velocities which tend to produce turbulence, the velocity is proportional to some power of the pressure gradient, the exponent ranging from 1 to 0.5 as the degree of turbulence increases. However., experiments with media having permeabilities corresponding to those of actual producing horizons show conclusively that the actual flow of liquids in a producing horizon must be viscous except perhaps in the immediate vicinity of a well producing at a high rate. Therefore, one is justified in assuming Darcy&apos;s law to hold for cases of practical interest, as will be implicitly assumed in this discussion Given this basic law of flow it is possible, theoretically to obtain solutions to any problem of viscous flow of dead liquids1 by the usual methods of potential theory. However, problems of practical interest often present such complex geometrical configurations of sources and sinks (driving sources and output wells) as to make the analytical solutions extremely difficult or even impossible. It is useful, therefore, to note that Darcy&apos;s law is precisely equivalent to the law of electrical conduction, so that the pressure distribution in steady state porous flow of liquids is exactly the same as the potential distribution in an electrical conducting medium.2 This analogy permits the use of electrical models wherein the potential distributions may be measured with far greater facility and accuracy than is possible in actual fluid-sand models. Such electrical models were used in determining the pressure distribution about complex arrays of wells, an example of which will be shown later in the discussion of the 5-spot flood. One phase of the porous flow problems which is of considerable practical interest involves the tracing of an advancing fluid front. Thus,

As part of the initial investigation and validation of a new boundary-clement formulation for stress modeling in coal mines. the underground stresses and displacements at two multiple-seam coal mines with unique stress problems are modeled and predicted. The new program, LAMODEL, calculates stresses and displacements at the seam level and at requested locations in the overburden or at the surface. Both linear elastic and non-linear seam materials can he used: and surface effects, multiple seams, and multiple mining steps can be simulated. In order to most efficiently use LAMODEL for accurate stress prediction, the program is first calibrated to the site-specific geo-mechanics based on previously observed stress conditions at the mine. For this calibration process. a previously mined area is "stress mapped" by quantifying the observed pillar and strata behavior using a numerical rating system. Then, the site-specific mechanical properties in the model are adjusted to provide the best correlation between the predicted stresses and the observed underground stress rating. Once calibrated, the model is then used to predict future stress problems abead of mining. At the two case study mines, the calibrated models showed good correlation with the observed stresses, and also accurately predicted upcoming high stress areas for preventive action by the mines.

"Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have advocated the use of instrumentation in underground mine ground control studies to aid in understanding failure mechanisms and to calibrate numerical models. The purpose of these efforts is to reduce accidents and fatalities in underground mines resulting from inadequate design of mining layout or supports. A recent examination of some results of stress change measurement raised some questions about the validity of elastic solutions in ground, such as coal. Particularly under deep cover as is prevalent in the western United States, the coal around a borehole would likely have yielded so that post-yield behavior would govern the response of the instrument.A numerical experiment was conducted by NIOSH researchers using the FLAC software (Itasca Consulting Group, 2016) to investigate the response of the borehole pressure cell (BPC) and the biaxial stressmeter to varying degrees of plastic behavior. The pre-encapsulated BPC cell pressure exhibits increasing departure from the elastic case with decreasing post-peak-strength slope of the stress-strain curve. On the other hand, because the BSM usually provides much more confinement to the surrounding rock than does the BPC, the measurements obtained from the BSM do not depart significantly from the changes in secondary principal stresses and directions as calculated by the elastic solution.INTRODUCTIONSeveral years ago, Larson et al. (2000) described several instruments that NIOSH had used in underground field studies and how to monitor them with dataloggers. This information is still relevant because of the need to understand how excavation affects the stability of mines and thus, the safety of mining personnel. One class of instruments described in that paper includes those instruments that measure change in rock stress. Although several such instruments might be used to measure stress change, the focus of this paper is on two instruments with which NIOSH has had more recent experience—the borehole pressure cell (BPC) (Geokon, 2018a; RST Instruments, 2018) and the biaxial stressmeter (BSM) (Geokon, 2018b). Other instruments, such as the CSIRO hollow inclusion stress cell (HICell) (Earth Sciences, 2019; Worotnicki and Walton, 1976) may be included in future studies.Early studies in the development of the BPC were those of Panek and Stock (USBM, 1964), Sellers (1970), Lu (1984), and Babcock (1986). Babcock’s work is particularly useful, but his setting and testing range was far below what we experienced in the NIOSH study, and it was Babcock’s data reduction scheme from his laboratory experiments that was used to calculate stress change in the NIOSH study (NIOSH, 2019a)."

THE strength of hard drawn copper wire is a question of considerable importance to both manufacturer and consumer. Unlike steel and alloy wires, in which strength is governed by both chemical and physical considerations, the high conductivity required for copper wire in the electrical industry generally precludes the possibility of obtaining tensile strength through the use of alloys. Consequently, this strength is largely a matter of the physical structure, and all factors known to affect this structure, such as rolling temperature, die contours, lubricants, drawing speeds, etc., are matters of prime importance. The experiments described here have been carried out during the past year at the Baltimore plant of the American Smelting & Refining Co., in connection with a general investigation of some of the questions mentioned above, with the object of studying the physical structure of hard drawn copper, wire and the influence of certain factors on that structure. The work has been of an exploratory nature, rather than comprehensive, but it was thought that the results might prove of sufficient general interest to warrant their publication. The bulk of the hard drawn copper wire used in places where strength is an important factor is manufactured to strict specification, based usually in the United States on that of the American Society for Testing Materials (B-1-23). This specification calls for almost as high a value of tensile strength; consistent with elongation, as it is possible practically to obtain, and only physically perfect material can be relied on to meet such a specification. Obvious defects, such as laminations produced through fins in the original rods or brittleness due to overdrawing, are usually recognized and need only passing reference. Laminations can be detected by twisting and untwisting the wire several times; they will show up on the surface in the form of fins. Fig. 1 shows a very bad example of this defect. The wire may be perfectly smooth before twisting but when such laminations are present they will readily show up under this treatment. This trouble is caused by similar defects in the original rod produced by overfills in rolling. Fig. 2 shows the cross-section of the rod from which the wire in Fig.1 was drawn.

INTRODUCTION IN the sinking of bore holes, there are but two fundamental operations -drilling and hoisting,-which determine in the main the character of drilling mechanism and structures. There are endless ramifications, however, in the execution of these fundamental operations, according to the purposes for which the bore holes are drilled, their maintenance after completion, the protection and convenience of workmen, etc. The three main lines of use for bore holes are in mineral exploration, the sinking of water and salt wells, and the exploitation of petroleum and natural gas. This paper has to do more especially with the last. Here again there are many divergences. Wells may be drilled by either the percussive, the hydraulic, or the abrasive method. Finally, each of these methods, as applied by drillers of diverse nationalities, has followed somewhat different lines of development. The American system of cable-tool drilling has perhaps had the widest application; the hydraulic rotary is also in extensive use; but the Canadian system, the Galician system, and the Russian free-fall system all have their points of recognized merit and are preferred by operators accustomed to their use. These differences in drilling procedure, which rest ultimately on essential variations in geological conditions, are reflected in the chilling structures as well as in the drilling mechanism. The purpose of the present paper is to record those stages in the development of the application of steel to the construction of drilling mechanism and structures with which the writer has been intimately associated, and to contribute to the history of the art of drilling other data acquired in the course of his personal investigations. It is necessarily limited by reason of space to American practice, with especial reference, therefore, to the cable-tool system and the hydraulic rotary method of drilling wells for oil and gas.

As part of a program to establish the effect of crystal imperfections on laser output, a detailed study was made of the dislocation structure of ruby crystals obtained from varioius sources. Using KHSO4 as an etchant, a detailed mapping of the dislocation structure on the (0001) and the (1150) planes was carried out. A less extensive study was made of the rhombohedral planes. The average dislocation density on the basal plane was 1.5 to 3 x 106 cm&apos;2 and on the (1120) planes -5 x 10&apos; cm-2. Howe7!er, considerable variation existed between areas on a given plane. The subboundaries in the basal plane tended to lie along [1100] type directions while those on the (1120) plane tended to lie: a) parallel to the basal plane, b) along truces of the (1101) plane, and c) along normals to the traces of the (0001) planes. The orientations suggest that mang of the dislocations lie on the (0001), (1701), and (1150) planes A Laue back-rellection nnalysis Of c-axis wander in one crystal revealed a gradual increase in misorientation from me end of the crystal to the other, with a maximum variation of 1°35&apos;. Slight etching of a mechanically polished crystal revealed mumerous polishing scratches, suggesting the existence of a plastic flow layer. It is recognized that chromium concentration, lineage, and other crystalline imperfections play a role in the efficiency of ruby lasers.&apos; Consequently, it is desirable to establish in detail the imperfection structure of ruby crystals to be used as lasers. Some exploratory work along this line had already been done by Barnes&apos; and Dils and Martin.&apos;" How- referred to as the morphological system, as described by Kronberg.4 The Miller indices given in the present paper will be based on this morphological system. In this system, the three common growth planes are the (0001), the {1120}, and the {1101}.5 Since these planes are of high stability, it is expected that they are most suitable for study by the etch-pit technique. In the present investigation, a detailed mapping of the dislocation structure was carried out for the (0001) and the (1130) planes. A less extensive study was made of the etch-pit structure on rhombohedra1 planes. An analysis of dislocations in sapphire (the ruby host) was first made by kronberg,4 who postulated that slip on the (0001) plane occurred by motion of dislocations with Burgers vector 1/3 <1150> and that these dislocations might dissociate into quarter partials. An etch-pit technique using boiling phosphoric acid was developed by Scheuplein and Gibbs6, 7 for identifying dislocations intersecting the (0001) planes and the planes near (2021) in sapphire. Al-ford and Stephens8 were able to reveal dislocations on the (0001) and {1120} planes in sapphire and ruby by etching in fused potassium bisulfate (KHS04) at 675°C. The termini of basal dislocations [(000l), <1120>] were revealed by Palmour and Kriegel9 on {1120} and {1010} by thermally etching sapphire. Bond and Harvey10 were able to decorate dislocations in sapphire by adding 1 pet by weight of ZrO2 to the Al2O3 powder used in the growth of the crystals by the Verneuil technique and then heating the grown crystals for 4 hr at 1500°C. They found, using optical transmission microscopy, that many dislocations had straight segments which were parallel to one of the six [1120] directions in the basal plane. Single dislocation lines curved smoothly from one alignment to the other, turning through angles of 60 to 120 deg. Also observed were isolated hexagonal loops, approximately 10 µ in diameter, the sides of which lay along the same directions as did the longer dislocations. MATERIAL AND ETCHING PROCEDURE The ruby specimens used in this study (all containing approximately 0.04 pet Cr) had been obtained from four different sources: Linde Co., Meller Co., Valpey Crystal Corp., and those grown at Aerospace Corp.* For the initial phase of this study, several specimens were cut from the slab shown schematically in Fig. 1 which had previously been cut from a disk boule obtained from the Linde

"Most unconformity-type uranium deposits in Saskatchewan occur within a few tens of metres above and/or below the basal unconformity of the 1,45-b.y. Athabasca Sandstone. Graphitic basement rocks coincident with post-Athabasca faulting or brecciation at or near the unconformity are important in localizing uranium deposits which form as tabular, ribbon-like bodies with grades averaging over 2 per cent uranium and containing up to 50,000 tonnes UJOs. Some of these deposits have similar contents of nickel and arsenic.In the genetic model proposed to explain these deposits, traces of uranium were leached from the sandstone and weathered basement rocks by oxidized formation waters sweeping through the sandstone and along brecciated faults. Over basement meta-petites, a thick clay regolith adsorbed uranium from the solution. Thus fixed, the uranium was reduced through an indirect reaction with graphite, possibly involving methane. The clay mineral surfaces were thus continuously cleared to allow further adsorption. Basement faults localized along weak graphitic units were re-activated, offsetting the sandstone formation, probably at the time of an early uranium deposition about 1.2 b.y. ago, and served as vents for spent ore solutions. Fluid convection was induced by topographic relief and/or crustal heating from radioactive decay in basement plutons or mantled Archean domes with uranium and/or thorium contents a few ppm above those of adjacent rocks. Heat from radioactive decay within the incipient uranium deposit would develop in about a million years. The self-generating convection cell would continue uranium deposition until all permeability was plugged by minerals. In some instances, convection was re-initiated after subsequent faulting and brecciation. While some deposits were further enriched, heavy flows of oxidized fluids re-dissolved and partially depleted other uranium deposits.The East Alligator Rivers uranium deposits in Northern Territory, Australia, occur within Middle Proterozoic quartzchlorite and quartz-muscovite schists overlain by sandstone. Highest grades occur in silicified breccias where carbonate beds were leached out. Mineralization ages are both pre- and post-Kombolgie Sandstone, but, to date, no significant uranium mineralization has been encountered in the sandstone. There are many general similarities with Saskatchewan deposits, but important differences in detail."

THE present work has been done in an endeavor to correlate and complete the data on the constitution of alloys of zinc with other common, metals, dealing exclusively, however, with the zinc-rich alloys in which the zinc content is between 90 and 100 per cent. This investigation has included the systems lead-zinc, cadmium-zinc, iron-zinc, copper-zinc, aluminum-zinc, nickel-zinc, manganese-zinc, cobalt-zinc, tin-zinc, and magnesium-zinc. The important ternary system zinc-lead-cadmium and the zinc corners of other ternary systems have been investigated in connection with this work but will not be dealt with here. Zinc does not form a single homogenous zinc-rich solid solution over any considerable range of concentration with any of the metals mentioned. A limited range of solid solubility is said,; by previous investigators, to occur in several cases and certain effects on the properties of zinc are attributed (with varying degrees of consistency among different writers) to the presence of certain other metals dissolved in zinc. The increasing use of rolled zinc and the possibilities offered by zinc as a casting alloy in certain fields have it made essential to determine precisely these equilibrium relationships. In carrying out this .investigation reliance was placed chiefly on two methods, conductivity measurements and microscopic analysis. The first method proved valuable in determining the existence and extent of solid solubility. The second method stands alone as a means of determining structural characteristics and supplements the first method in the measurement of solid solubility. The scleroscopic hardness of all conductivity specimens was measured partly for its value from the point of view of mechanical properties and partly; as a check on the conductivity curves in indicating the limits of solid solubility. No hardness curves are included in this paper, for in no case were they important in arriving at the constitution of any system.

[Important discoveries of new oil fields were made in 1937 in the State of Illinois. Oil production, which was virtually constant during 1934, 1935, and 1936 at about 4,400,000 barrels a year, a increased to 7,499,000, barrels during 1937, and in 1938 this production was trebled. In 1939, 94,302,0003/ barrels were produced (almost foot times the 1938 quantity), making Illinois one of the cost important oil-producing areas in the United States. The Bureau of Mines has analyzed 35 samples of petroleum from these new Illinois fields and presents the analyses herein. Included with them in this report are analyses of seven samples from fields developed before 1936.]
