This study was made to find methods of preventing back strains, among workers in brick plants, however, the information should apply to other industries that employ hand labor too process materials. The report is based on information in letters from. Bureau of Mines engineers and other safety men in the United States who visited numerous brick plants. Back strains, as wall as hernias and other muscular strains, result when certain body structures are subjected to strains greater than, they can withstand. Such breakdowns may be prevented simply by not straining these body structures. This is simple in theory but complicated in practice. It requires primary education of new workers and reeducation of older workers in the best method of lifting, preemployment physical. examinations to select employees for the jobs that require constant lifting, all possible mechanization of material-handling operations, relocation of machinery, and elevation of working surfaces to reduce to a minimum the muscular effort the workers must exert to perform operations impossible to mechanize. Accidents of any kind are a total bee for the American economy and decrease productivity; whereas mechanization raises the level of productivity and constitutes progress toward total safety. Heavy lifting should be done mechanically whenever possible, saving the men to direct the machines. This is an essential step in preventing strain accidents.

The utilization of large diameter drilled holes for mine shafts seems to have had its beginning in Europe about 1850 (28) where the mining industries of Germany and The Netherlands first used drilled shafts. Recent shafts in softer formations of diameters as large as 25 feet and as deep as 1, 700 feet have been drilled in both The Netherlands and Germany. The first shaft drillers utilized cable tool or churn drilling techniques which limit both hole diameters and drilling speeds. Though some churn drilling of shafts is still performed, rotary drilling has been the dominant technique for many years.

In presenting this paper to the Institute I beg to mention, first, the results which I have obtained and the apparatus which I have employed, and to follow this with a brief description of the steps by which I hare perfected this process. My present mode of testing is as follows: I obtain, either from the furnace or from the finished product in any stage in which it may chance to be, a small test-piece, usually about 3/4 of an inch square by 3 1/2 inches in length. I place this test-piece upon the poles of an ordinary electro-magnet, for about one minute, and thus magnetize it to its extreme limit. I then place it upon an indicator (which I will shortly describe), on which indicator there is already placed a piece of steel of similar form which has been magnetized in the same manner, the percentage of carbon of this second piece being definitely known. I then, by means of a scale, which forms part of the indicator, marked in degrees of carbonization, read the exact percentage of carbon contained in the piece under examination. My apparatus consists of an ordinary electro-magnet, connected with a suitable battery of moderate power, by which I magnetize the pieces as before described, and of an indicator which consists of a magnetic needle suitably mounted or suspended, so that it is free to deviate a few degrees only from the zero point, and having a rest, which is used to check the vibrations when in use, and to support its weight when not in use. At a right angle to the natural position of the needle I have a scale about 3 feet long, the zero point of which coincides with the natural position of the needle. This scale is marked in each direction from the zero point in degrees of carbonization. A maximum of ten process streams (Merrill barren solutions) can be monitored sequentially with this on-line analyser, and gold concentrations as Iow as 0,005 mg/I can be determined. The design is a further development of the Tell-tale analyser constructed by the Corner House Laboratories during the period 1965-69. The barren solution is preconcentrated automatically by solvent extraction, the solvent being a solution of I per cent Aliquat 336 in di-isobutyl ketone. An aqueous-to-solvent ratio of 40: I is maintained. The extracted gold in the organic phase is determined by flame atomic absorption, each analysis taking approximately II minutes. The long-term reproducibility of the absorbance readings over a 24-hour period of repetitive sampling of four simulated process streams varied from 6,9 to 4,1 per cent relative standard deviation for gold concentrations of 0,0 I to 0,05 mg/I.

Centrifugal force has been used for centuries for separating liquids but machines for doing this are a comparatively recent development. The use of these machines is being extended into many industries but this paper is confined to their use in the oil industry. The centrifugal machine is found at the well where "cut oil" is dehydrated for acceptance by pipe lines; and in the refinery and byproduct plant. In fact, wherever finely divided suspended particles should be removed from an oil, there is a possible use for a centrifugal machine, if the particles have, or can be made to have, a specific gravity different from that of the oil. Centrifugal machines are also used for cleaning fuel and lubricating oils and dehydrating transformer oils. Applications and Results When oil comes from the well mixed with water, it is spoken of as cut oil. Settling often does not remove sufficient water for the oil to be accepted by pipe lines, thus necessitating chemical or other treatment. Centrifuging alone, or following chemical treatment, effectively prepares such oil for pipe lines, as is shown by the following data: WateR, Etc. Wat~R. Etc. Pyrophyllite, a hydrous aluminum silicate, physically similar to talc, receives its name from the Greek word Pyr, for fire and phyllite, a rock or stone. Firestone refers to its first recorded use as firestones or hearthstones. Composition and Properties Pyrophyllite is an aluminum silicate A12O34SiO2H2O (alumina 28.3 pct, silica 66.7 [ ] pct, water 5.0 pct) (Table 1). Vanderbilt1 gives pH value of pyrophyllite as 5.6 to 8.4. Pyrophyllite is usually white or cream, though it may be found in shades of pale green, pale yellow, buff or light gray, and in darker shades and other colors principally due to oxidation of contained iron minerals. It is opaque to translucent in thin sections. Its hardness is 1 to 2 in the Mohs scale. Its specific gravity is 2.8 to 2.9. Its luster is pearly to dull; it is recognized chiefly by its micaceous structure and cleavage, and its soft greasy feel. Two other varieties occur, one in which there are radiated needles in the crystalline form, and there is also a massive homogeneous structure found. Fine grinding reduces pyrophyllite to fiat plates or scales but aggregates of minute foliated plates may be formed.1 Distribution of Deposits Pyrophyllite is found in metamorphic rocks throughout the world but it is only in comparatively recent years that it has assumed much commercial importance. A vanadium-base alloy consisting of the following elements in weight-percent--molybdenum, 20; titanium, 10; carbon, 0.1; silicon, 0.5; and yttrium, 0.5--had exceptionally high strength at temperatures up to 1,200° C. This alloy was capable of fabrication to sheet of ~ 1 mm thickness by a combination of hot swaging and hot and warm rolling. In the warm-rolled condition at ambient temperature, its ultimate tensile strength was 1,205 MN/m2. The strength at 1,200° C was 150 MN/m2. Within the temperature range of 25° to 1,200° C, the ductility of the alloy as measured by elongation increased from 4 to >90 percent. Strengthening was achieved by both solid-solution and dispersed-phase mechanisms. Alloys of 20 percent molybdenum and 10 percent titanium were stronger than the other molybdenum-titanium alloy compositions tested. Strength was increased 15 percent in the temperature range of 25° to 800° C, with no accompanying loss in ductility, by the addition of 0.5 percent silicon. Workability was improved by additions of 0.25 and 0.5 percent yttrium.

A centrifugal float-and-sink test procedure has been developed by the Bureau of Mines to reduce the time for the gravimetric separation of coals finer than l4-mesh from as long as 24 hours to less than 1 hour. Comparative tests indicated that centrifuging a minus 14-mesh Pittsburgh-bed coal for 20 minutes at 1,500 revolutions per minute produced results that compared favorably with static float-and-sink test results. Standard deviations of the mean recovery and ash content of the float obtained centrifugally ranged from 1.31 and 0.04 percent, respectively, at 1.30 specific gravity to 0.21 and 0.05 percent, respectively, at 1.60 specific gravity. As in static separations, retreatment of the products separated at low specific gravities was required.

The writer has carried on experimental work for several years with respect to the simultaneous dissolution of gold by cyanide and the adsorption of the dissolved gold on activated charcoal in ore pulps, followed by the recovery of the charcoal by flotation. The results of this experimental work have been sufficiently encouraging to suggest a new process based on the principle of simultaneous dissolution and adsorption of gold, applicable to certain ores and tailings that cannot be treated to advantage by countercurrent decantation or filtration. Applications for patents have been filed and The Dorr Company, Inc. has the exclusive right to license the use of the process. The purpose of this paper is to describe such a process, state its possible advantages and immediate field, and give some results obtained on a laboratory scale. Early Experimental Work In the early stages of the experimental work attempts were made to precipitate soluble gold from cyanide solutions with zinc and aluminum in ore pulps followed by flotation of the precipitated gold, but since the results were not promising enough to continue with these precipitants attention was directed to carbon. The first experiments with carbon comprised the addition of cyanide and alkali to the ore pulp, the addition of carbon at or near the end of the dissolving period, and the recovery of the carbon by flotation. With this method of procedure the assumption was made that carbon functioned as a precipitant of gold from cyanide solutions and as such should be added as are other precipitants, including zinc and aluminum; namely, at the end of the dissolution period. The assumption was then made that carbon functioned as an adsorbent, and that if such assumption proved to be correct, it could be added with success to the ore pulp at the time of adding the cyanide. The first experiment along this line was successful in that the feasibility of the dissolution of gold by cyanide and the simultaneous extraction of the dissolved gold by carbon in ore pulps was demonstrated, at least with respect to such treatment on a laboratory scale.

Single crystals of tungsten, which were grown by electron bombardment floating zone refining, were strained 2 pet in tension and bending at 298°, 77°, and 20°K to determine the modes and crystallography of the plastic deformation of these temperatures. At 77° and 20°K plastic deformation occurs by slip on systems of the type (011) [111] and by twinning on (112)-type planes. For crystals strained at 298°K, deformation occurs by slip in [111] directions on either (Oil)- or (112)-type planes. CURRENT models for the initiation of brittle fracture in crystalline materials are based on a knowledge of the details of their plastic deformation.1 Body-centered cubic tungsten exhibits brittle failure at temperatures below about 500 °K yet the modes and crystallography of its plastic deformation have not been studied below 1000°K. In 1924, Goucher2 reported that tungsten single crystals with a total impurity content of less than 0.01 wt pet deformed by slip on the (112) [111] system in the temperature range 1000° to 3000°K. He also observed (001) [010] slip in one crystal which was constrained by the presence of a large fissure. According to Barrett3 tungsten also deforms by twinning on the (112) plane in the [111] direction, but he gives no details on the tendency for twin formation or the temperature range in which twinning occurs. Therefore, as a necessary part of a study of the factors influencing the brittle fracture of tungsten, the modes and crystallography of the plastic deformation were determined at 298°, 77°, and 20°K. Tungsten single crystals, grown using the electron-bombardment zone-refining technique first described by Calverly,4 were deformed to between 1 and 2 pet plastic strain in tension and bending. The surface offset resulting from slip or twinning was observed with an optical microscope to determine the crystallography of the deformation. The existence of twins was proven by the standard polishing and etching technique; and the crystallography of dislocation motion was followed using the dislocation etchant described by Wolff.5 Some observations on the fracture characteristics of tungsten single crystals are included. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES Growth, Purity, and Perfection of the Crystals-Several years ago Calverly, Davis, and Lever4 dem-onstrated the feasibility of growing tungsten single crystals by the electron-bombardment floating zone-refining technique, and Carlson6 showed that crystals produced in this way had a high degree of purity and were ductile at room temperature. Tungsten single crystals produced by this technique in equipment similar to that described by Carlson were used in this study. The starting material, a powder metallurgy product, was obtained in the form of a swaged 1/8-in. rod from the General Electric Wire Plant in Cleveland, Ohio. IT is now generally recognized that the gravitational method of geophysical surveying is a valuable aid in elucidating the geological structure of the subsoil and enables the practical geologist to deduce the presence of useful deposits. The particular suitability of the torsion balance to the location of large and important subterranean structures has given rise to a wide application of this method by many of the important oil companies in their search for future supplies, and so intense have been these efforts that little has been heard of the method in other connections, with the exception of occasional references to its application in the location of hidden deposits of metallic ores, salt and lignite, and a number of accounts of its use in the elucidation of geological structures. Its success in the location of salt domes is well known, and establishes it as one of the most important of the geophysical methods, especially for the indirect location of oil. In the British Isles, however, no large occurrence of oil is likely to be revealed, and here the practical application of the gravitational method has been restricted almost entirely to the search for ores. This type of survey possesses well marked characteristics, and presents a gravitational problem that has necessitated the development of a special and probably unusual plan of campaign, full details of which it is hoped will shortly be published. The problems and difficulties encountered in this work are of necessity fundamentally related to those met with in the search for oil by means of the torsion balance, but they also possess several special and distinctive features which undoubtedly differentiate them from the obstacles confronting the oil prospector, and which call for special consideration and treatment.

"Copper Electrowinning (EW) is a complex electrochemical process that involves the production of LME grade copper from copper rich electrolyte. The process involves the deposition of the copper ions onto the cathode from copper rich electrolyte with the production of oxygen bubbles at the anode. The process setups up a complex flow pattern within the cell as it is subjected to varying density gradients due to the deposition process along with oxygen bubble driven flow. It is a necessity to understand and quantify the flow behaviour within these cells in order to maintain the production of highest grade copper. In fact, the oxygen bubbles originating from the process is responsible for the generation of acid mist which is a designated as a carcinogen a major health hazard around EW tank houses. Hydrodynamic assessment of the process has so far been restricted to simple mass balances and some limited numerical modelling. All the models are based on assumed boundary conditions which has not so far been verified by any real-time physical measurement. This apparent gap has led to models which could not be directly used to track process changes or troubleshoot problems in EW tank houses. In order to address this gap, CSIRO has established a full size (width and height) transparent cell capable of simulating plant operating conditions (across the range currently used). With the use of sophisticated diagnostic analytical tools and measurement techniques it was possible to study all the operating variables (current density, flow rate, temperature, etc.) independently and their effect of bubble size, bubble velocity, gas hold-up as well as acid mist generation and its size. In order to address safety concerns in tank houses around acid mist early results outlining the factors contributing to its generation as well as the effect of various barriers to mitigate acid mist is outlined below.INTRODUCTIONA significant part of today’s copper production is through hydrometallurgical route which predominantly involves leaching, Solvent eXtraction (SX) followed by ElectroWinning (EW). Producing copper using this approach have shown to be environmentally friendly (Dresher, 2001) compared to the traditional smelting process. EW is the final step in the production of LME grade copper using the hydrometallurgy route. The electro-chemical process involves the use of a lead anode (Pb-Sn-Ca) and a stainless steel cathode to produce copper sheets using the copper rich electrolyte from the SX process and with the applications of direct current to the electrodes. This electro-chemical reaction results in the deposition of copper ions on the cathode with oxygen released from the anode as a by-product. Hydrodynamically, the oxygen bubbles create a bubble driven flow within the EW tanks with the surrounding electrolyte. A direct result of this could be seen from the quality of the copper deposited on the cathode. Most of the copper plates produced from the traditional tank houses have a rough texture at its bottom one-third while the top two-thirds have a smooth finish with a finer grain structure."

Previous to the war, this country depended on Europe for its supply of a number of alloys of great importance in the manufacture of electrical apparatus and equipment. When this source was cut off shortly after the beginning of hostilities and the small stocks in the United States were exhausted, either inferior substitutes had to be used or the manufacture of the apparatus suspended. Since electrical equipment was of primary importance in the prosecution of the war, the substitutes had to be used until the composition and processes of manufacture of the alloys could be determined. Included among these alloys was one generally known as manganin, which is composed chiefly of copper and manganese and which, beside having a low-temperature coefficient of resistance, has a low thermal electromotive force against copper. These qualities make it valuable for the manufacture of electrical instruments and machines in which it is used in the shape of wire, rod, and strip. As a result of these circumstances, an investigation was started to determine how manganin could be made on a commercial basis so that a product of uniform quality and the necessary electrical characteristics could be produced. The object was to procure an alloy with temperature coefficient of resistance not greater than 1 X 1X per " C. and a thermal e.m.f. against copper no greater than that of the imported material. It is characteristic of manganin that the temperature-resistance curve is not a straight line but has a peak, which varies in position with different samples; it is most desirable, however, to have it at a temperature of 25' C. if possible. The coefficients of manganin from all records available ranged from a large negative to a large positive value. The composition as reported by different authorities is given in Table I. Prof. Matthew A. Hunter, of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, made up a number of small melts of manganin in a graphite crucible and the one that he reported as having the best cocfficient gave the following analysis: Copper, 83.6 per cent.; nickel 2.5 per cent.; manganese, 13.6 per cent.; iron, 0.3 per cent. An analysis of a sample of German manganin gave the following: Copper, 82.6 per cent.; nickel, 3.8 pcr cent.; manganese, 12.8 per cent.; iron 0.7 per cent.

This paper describing the concentrator practice of the Hurley Plant of the Nevada Consolidated Copper Co. at Hurley, N. Mex., is one of a series of papers on milling methods and costs being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines. The Hurley concentrator has a normal daily capacity of 13,500 tons of ore, and for the first four months of 1930 the heads of the concentrator averaged 1.32 per cent of copper and 3.14 per cent of iron. The recovery for this period was 83.98 per cent and the concentrates produced averaged 27.54 per cent of copper.

Various aspects concerning gold are mentioned below. These have no common theme but suggest points of interest any one of which, if warranted, could lead to development later and elsewhere. 'High level' auriferous gravels The gold deposits of Victoria are commonly classified as being either primary or secondary. Most primary occurrences comprise gold present in quartz reefs, together with other lode-like occurrences in which gold is associated with various sulphides, with or without quartz. Secondary occurrences are derived by physical release of primary gold and subsequent concen- tration of it as a constituent of sediments. Secondary gold deposits may be themselves eroded so leading to third or even fourth generation gold.

Iron ores associated with the Oriskany formation extend from the West Virginia border to the southwestern corner of Virginia. The deposits have been mined at many places, and the district is credited with the production of approximately 13,000,000 tons of ore to 1925, when mining operations ceased (fig. 1). The Oriskany iron-ore deposits occur in the Alleghany Mountains throughout their extent in the State. The name Oriskany was originally given to the limonite ore that was supposed to occur in the Oriskany sand-stone. At present, the name applies to all iron-ore deposits occurring in the lower part of the Devonian shale, Oriskany sandstone, and Helderberg limestone. The principal ore-bearing minerals are goethite and limonite. This report deals principally with the occurrences in Allegheny, Bath, Botetourt, and Craig Counties, Va. The Bureau of Mines, as part of the strategic-minerals program, began a project to develop the reserves of the area in November 1943; and continued until December 1944. Work started near Oriskany and extended northeast for nearly three-fourths of the area of the more important deposits. During the program 163 holes were drilled, totaling 11,651 feet; 256 feet of prospect tunnels were driven; 1,346 samples were collected; beneficiation tests were performed; and bulldozer trails and trenches wore excavated. The work served to delimit and appreciably extend the reserves of several areas. Analyses of channel samples are -given in appendix A, and diamond-drill and churn-drill hole logs and sample analyses are given in appendixes B and C, respectively.

The report is separated into two volumes to document the two studies separately. Volume I describes work performed and the recommended concept for a bidirectional auger. Volume II describes the studies of mining equipment performance and mining plans developed to determine a conventional mining plan offering improved productivity.

The effect of microwave treatment on the surface roughness and wettability of chalcopyrite (CuFeS2 ) and on the chemical composition of its surface was studied. The microwave source was a conventional multimodal oven with frequency of 2.45 GHz and maximum power of 900 W. Pure chalcopyrite specimens and purified chalcopyrite concentrate were used in this study. Analysis using atomic force microscopy showed a decrease in the surface roughness of the chalcopyrite after microwave radiation. This decrease may be due to oxidation of the surface and formation of iron oxide. Moreover, the surface wettability of the chalcopyrite mineral increased with increasing duration of microwave radiation, which was in good agreement with the micro-flotation mass recovery results. The increased wettability of the surface may be attributed to the decreased surface roughness by microwave radiation. Analysis using scanning electron microscope/energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy indicate that after microwave radiation, the contents of sulfur and iron increased whereas that of copper decreased on the surface of the chalcopyrite, significantly changing the average atomic number of the chalcopyrite surface.

This study traces the development of the bucket-wheel excavator, points out the differences in the German- and American-type wheels, and gives the major design criteria and the advantages and disadvantages of bucket-wheel operations. A computer program, written in FORTRAN IV for use with an IBM 360 computer, simulates the operation of the digging components of a bucket-wheel excavator. By supplying certain mining dimensions, soil characteristics, and machine design specifications, this program will print out a time study of the various components of an operation, power calculations for the operation, and production data. This program, when combined with a truck, belt, or rail program, should be helpful in planning a complete mining system In material suitable for a bucket-wheel excavator operation.
