Printed circuited boards contain considerable quantities of valuable metal, while also containing many environmental pollutants making them unsuitable for landfill. In this study the decomposition of common plastics used in printed circuit boards were studied. Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polyethylene (PE) were heated in both C02 and argon atmospheres using a thermo-gravimetric furnace (TG) coupled to a mass spectrometer (MS). Soda ash Na2C03 and baking soda NaHC03 were used as reactants. The degradation temperatures and evolved gases are presented for single plastics and mixtures. Mixed plastics are shown to behave as a sum of the individual plastics. The mass loss temperature is the same in CO2 and argon. However, less residue is formed when heated in CO2.

This report details work performed and results obtained in a study of the water management aspects of oil shale mining and retorting in the Piceance Creek Basin. Three specific sites were investigated, and optimal water management systems for both conventional and in-situ extraction processes were generated. Water-related legal and environmental constraints on development were identified and the water management schemes were developed in compliance with these regulations. Limitations on shale oil production implied by limited water supplies were evaluated. Potential Basin-wide effects of development were evaluated using a computer model, and mitigation strategies were developed. Recommendations for additional investigation and analyses were presented.

A flexible, efficient, and relatively low-cost drilling and blasting operation has evolved at Texasgulf Canada, Ltd.'s Kidd Creek underground mine. Located 32 km (20 miles) north of historic Timmins, Ontario, the underground operation utilizes a sublevel open stoping method developed with large-diameter blastholes. Over the years, Kidd Creek engineers have experimented with various drill-and-blast techniques, leading to the present-day practice. Continuing work is being conducted to further mechanize the blasting operation.

The optimal geochemical parameters required to form ellringite in a lime-remediated site have been investigated with the use of thermodynamic modelling. The speciation of sulphate and 10 metals analyzed in samples of a mine tailing from northern Quebec was calculated with a computer model. The model also includes calcium, which would result from the addition of lime to the system. Two speciation calculations were done. The first one is a hypothetical speciation before the onset of precipitation and was used to devise the stability fields of minerals susceptible of forming in high pHs. The stability fields were determined by building activity ratio diagrams with sulphate, aluminum and calcium species concentrations for pHs ranging from 4 to 14. The investigation was carried out for a 25°C solution with an ionic strength less than 0.12. Thermodynamics predict that an optimal stability field for ettringite in the mine tailing samples containing 10-3 mol/L SO4-2,10-2 mol/L of AI(OH)4 requires at least 10-2mol/L of Ca+2 and a pH larger than 11.6. The sulphate contents of the mine tailing samples, however, limit the precipitation of ettringite and monosulphate could be an end-precipitate. The second speciation is in equilibrium with precipitates and provides information on the speciation of the residual metals. If ellringite could be precipitated as a stable form, it could serve as a sorptive agent for residual metals, and, due to its binding properties, consolidate tailings.

The Bureau of Mines is conducting research into the pneumatic recovery of coarse mica and has used this method to produce mica concentrates that contain more than 90 percent mica. This research is being carried out pursuant to the Bureau's objective to develop technology that will help maintain an adequate supply of minerals and metals to meet national economic and strategic needs. Researchers used a Bureau-designed system of crushers, screens, and zig-zag air classifiers to concentrate coarse liberated mica particles from mica-bearing materials. This pneumatic system was used to concentrate four mica ores from Arizona, North Carolina, and South Dakota and three waste tailings from Alabama, Georgia, and South Dakota. Using these samples, it was demonstrated that plus 65-mesh size mica can be effectively recovered by the pneumatic method. Not only were the concentrates high in mica content; it was also demonstrated that this method can be used to recover up to 78 percent of the mica that was originally contained in the samples. Because it is a dry concentration method, the pneumatic beneficiation technique may be advantageous in areas where water resources are limited.

"The New Jersey Turnpike Section 2 widening program consisted of widening between Interchange 6 in Mansfield Township, Burlington County and Interchange 9 in East Brunswick Township, Middlesex County. To accommodate large volume of traffic the roadway was widened from 6 to 12 lanes with major modifications performed at four interchanges. The Section 2, NJTA Interchange 6 to 9 Widening Program is a 4.2-mile section of Turnpike roadway which included a total of 12 new or modified structures. In order to facilitate the construction process Section 2 was divided into three construction contract packages. This paper will cover the last and final Contract T869.120.203 which is 1.7 miles in length. The work generally consisted of eight new ramps connection to and from the toll plaza to the new inner and outer roadways. New mainline bridges were constructed over several ramps. A new bridge was constructed to take northbound outer lanes traffic over two ramps along with new mainline bridges over Black’s Creek, Georgetown Road, and Laurel Run. In addition, a new bridge was constructed to take a ramp over Laurel Run and the existing U-turn Bridge was replaced with a new one.For Contract T869.120.203 a total of 74 five-foot diameter drilled shafts has been constructed to support all pier foundations for bridges. Three drilled shafts were tested using Osterberg Load Cells to verify the estimated shaft resistance during design phase. One Osterberg Load Cell test was performed on a demonstration (sacrificial) shaft and the other two Osterberg Load Cell tests were performed on production shafts. This paper compares the estimated total, side and tip resistances with corresponding measured total, side and tip resistances and provided recommendations for future design purpose.INTRODUCTIONTo accommodate large volume of traffic the New Jersey Turnpike Authority (NJTA) decided to widen Section 2, which included Interchange 6 through Interchange 9. It encompasses modifications of the existing and the design of four new ramps at Interchange 7. The project also includes the modification of two local roads over the mainline, two local roads under the mainline, two maintenance U-turns, and retaining walls. In addition, the project consists of the design of noise walls, sign structures, storm water management basins and the more typical drainage, utilities, lighting, roadway, ROW, and signing and striping design."

THE system of pitwork used with the Cornish pumping engine, and which, for want of a better name, we may call the Cornish system of pitwork, consists essentially of a series of plunger-pumps, situated one below the other, in a shaft or incline, the plungers being operated by a rod called the pitman or pump-rod, which must, therefore, extend from the motor at the surface to the lowest pump. The subject will be best understood by reference to Fig. 1, in which k may be taken as typical of the ordinary plunger-pump, in which S is the suction pipe, u, the lower valve situated in the H piece T; v, the upper valve situated in the valve-box O; I, the mounting-pipe or column through which the water is carried to the surface; L, the plunger-barrel, and P, the plunger working through the stuffing-box, and actuated by the branch rod r, which is attached to the main pump-rod, R. The action of the pump is as follows : On the ascent of the plunger, acting now by suction, the water flows from the reservoir through the valve u, into the barrel, L. On the descent of the plunger, the water is forced up through the valve, v, which acts merely as a check valve, into the pipe, I, through which it is, at each successive down-stroke of the plunger, forced upward until it reaches the next reservoir, from which it is taken by another similar pump, and so on until it reaches the surface or drain-tunnel. The pump is obviously only single-acting, i. e., it acts only during one-half of its entire stroke. The weight of water raised during the up-stroke of the plunger is equal to the weight of a column of water whose base is the area of the plunger and whose height is the mean distance between the plunger-face and the surface of water in the lower reservoir, a distance not usually exceeding 12 or 15 feet, and which obviously cannot under the most favorable circumstances, exceed 25 or 30 feet. The water forced up during the down-stroke is equal to the weight of a column of water whose base equals the area of the plunger and whose height equals the length of the mounting column above the mean position of the plunger-face, say from 150 to 300 feet. The electrical conductivity of minerals increases with increase in temperature as a result of the thermal activation of the electrons. Some oxidizable minerals have a change in the stoichiometric proportions after heating in air, and the conductivity does not return to the original value after cooling. Similar changes occur in reducing atmospheres. Other minerals, such as carbonates and hydrates, are completely decomposed. Electrical resistivity measurements on single particles when compared to standard separation measurements show that minerals having resistivities above 1013 ohms respond as nonconductors. Those below 1011 respond as good conductors.

Remarks of Mr. Robert W. Hunt, General, Superintendent, Albany and Rensselaer Iron and Steel Company., Troy N. Y.—In discussing Dr. Dudley's two most interesting papers, I feel a natural hesitancy in disagreeing with conclusions formed after such careful and conscientious work. But I think he has made his deductions from too meagre premises. The analyses of but twenty-five samples are entirely too few to justify the establishment of so important a formula. When we consider that he indirectly proposes to regulate an interest amounting, even at the present low prices, to over $20,000,000 per annum, we may well hesitate before accepting a formula based upon the chemical and physical analyses of but twenty-five steel rails. Dr. Dudley touches the keynote in referring to the proposed labors of the Government Test Commission. They based their hopes of attaining success upon the chemical and physical analyses of a very large number of samples, and in the only branch of investigation which the short-sighted policy of Congress has allowed them to complete, i.e., chain cables, we find that a dozen, twenty-five or one hundred tests gave no satisfactory results. It was only after many hundreds that they were enabled to' draw conclusions. There are so many circumstances hearing upon the life of a rail, that the task of extracting a correct result seems herculean. I presume I am right in stating that in our Northern latitudes early winter and spring months witness the breaking of the greatest number of rails, thus seeming to prove that an unstable road-bed has much to answer for. Then, again, broken and flattened wheels must be taken into account, but I am convinced that more rails have been broken by the treatment which they received before leaving the rolling-mill

[Inquiries are frequently received by the Bureau of Minas relative to occurrence, mining, treatment and utilization of the natural hydrocarbons' such as gilsonite, elaterate, wurtzilite, grahamite, and ozokerite although have been known and used for many years, they are not yet well understood and the amount of recent literature dealing with them as comparatively small. This paper is intended merely to summarize the present knowledge The natural hydrocarbons included in this series are gilsonite, elaterite, wurtzilite, glance pitch, manjak, grahamite, albertite, arid ozokerite and many other minor varieties. With the exception of ozokerite and the other mineral waxes, then all more or less resemble asphalt in that they are dark brown or black bituminous substances of organic origin, generally with a resinous luster. Ozokerite usually light an color with a waxey luster, is closely allied to the others of the series, but is usually considered separately, Unfortunately authorities differ as to nomenclature so that determinations of physical and chemical properties from different sources may riot be readily compared. Abraham Herbert, Asphalts and Allied Substances, 1918, 606 pp. has made one of the most detailed studies of these subjects in recent years, and his classification is used in the main. The Canada Centre for Remote Sensing (CCRS) has developed an airborne sensor, the SWIR Full Spectrum Imager (SFSI) which detects in the Short Wave Infrared range of the solar spectrum from 1220 to 2420nm. In June of 1995, a demonstration flight was undertaken in the state of Nevada with the support of the companies listed above. The focus of the flight was to collect image data over well known mineral deposits with the objective of evaluating the applicability of this sensor to alteration mineral mapping. Some of the Nevada sites chosen include Cuprite and Goldfield, volcanic hosted acid sulfate systems; Yerington, a structurally complex porphyry copper deposit; and Virginia City, a Quartz- Sericite-Pyrite vein system with advanced argillic pods. Ground spectral data was collected with the PIMA-II spectrometer. Solar reflectance calibration was done by Desert Research Institute personnel at Virginia City and Cuprite. This paper will discuss the configuration of the sensor and present image and ground data for Goldfield and Virginia City.

Passive methods of treating mine water use chemical and biological processes that decrease metal concentrations and neutralize acidity. Compared with conventional chemical treatment, passive methods generally require more land area, but use less costly reagents and require less operational attention and maintenance. Currently, three types of passive technologies exist: aerobic wetlands, organic substrate wetlands, and anoxic limestone drains. Aerobic wetlands promote mixed oxidation and hydrolysis reactions, and are most effective when the raw mine water is net alkaline. Organic substrate wetlands promote anaerobic bacterial activity that results in the precipitation of metal sulfides and the generation of bicarbonate alkalinity. Anoxic limestone drains generate bicarbonate alkalinity and can be useful for the pretreatment of mine water before it flows into a wetland. Rates of metal and acidity removal for passive systems have been developed empirically by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. Aerobic wetlands remove Fe and Mn from alkaline water at rates of 10-20 and 0.5- 1.0 g. m-2? d-1, respectively. Wetlands with a composted organic substrate remove acidity from mine water at rates of 3-9 g. m-2? d-1?. A model for the design and sizing of passive treatment systems is presented in this report.

Safe and successful mine closure represents a fundamental work element that needs to accommodate the geochemical conditions existing at the completion of the mining and ore processing effort. Given the interests in limiting costs and time associated with mine closure efforts enhanced prior understanding of the geochemical conditions likely to exist upon exhaustion of the economic reserves can provide important benefits. The purpose of this paper is to document the benefits associated with geochemical modeling and understanding how the ore formation process may impact mine closure efforts, using one ore deposit type as an example. Specifically, this paper will emphasize the geochemical processes leading to the formation of sandstone-hosted uranium roll-type deposits and how the resultant concentrations and distributions of ore and gangue phases need to be incorporated into understanding the geochemical conditions projected to exist at the end of mineral recovery efforts. The paper will describe the evolution of geochemical conditions leading to ore body formation and the geochemical effects induced by open pit mining and how these may be used to understand both the geochemical controls and constraints on residual mine water. In addition, a discussion will be provided on how these conditions may be simulated by solution equilibria and kinetic modeling to develop optimum approaches to achieve applicable closure standards. This paper will also discuss specific augmentations to existing industry standard solution equilibria and kinetic models and associated thermodynamic databases to maximize the predictive accuracy of the geochemical modeling results. The benefits of understanding the electrochemically reactive behavior of uranium and associated gangue phases and incorporating this behavior into mine closure efforts will be presented. The culmination of the benefits of the geochemical modeling will ultimately be the development of a sustainable approach to uranium mine closure that is based upon an engineered environment designed to return the ore body to stable geochemical conditions.

There are a number of mineral processing operations which produce at some point a stream of hot particulates. At today's energy prices it becomes important to recover the energy held in the hot particulates. Sometimes it is convenient to use gas, e.g. in air pre- heating, and this will be appropriate in some circumstances. There are cases where it would be very useful if energy in the hot processed particles could be exchanged to the cold feed solids. This can be achieved within appropriate limitations by countercurrent heat exchangers comprised of parallel channels which contain, alternately, fluidized solids of 'hot' and 'cold' streams respectively. A pilot- plant has been built. Some calculations relating to industrial application will be Presented.

A mineral investigation of prospects in the Sawtooth Mountains B Wilderness Study Area (WSA) by the U. S. Bureau of Mines in 1983 revealed none had mineral production, resources, or development potential. The area is underlain by tonalite and smaller amounts of schist, One developed prospect and one prospect pit are in the WSA. They are in schist similar to host rock which has yielded gold in nearby mining districts, Sand and gravel deposits in the WSA are large but too far from markets to be considered resources. No energy (oil, gas, coal, or geothemal) resources were identified in the USA.

All industrial water users are required to hold Water Rights, which are in effect licences to take, use, dam, divert or discharge water. Water Rights are obtained through a legally defined process and any potentially affected party has the per to object to their granting. A special tribunal hears the evidence for and against an application, and issues its decision, which is reviewable in a higher court on Appeal. Rights, if granted, are issued subject to conditions and, in the case of mining discharges, limits would be set on flaw rate, suspended solids concentrations, turbidity, pH and the concentrations of any potential toxicants. This paper presents a case study of an integrated, catchment wide water management plan for Lake Waahi, that was prepared by the author, and others while the author was in the employ of CoalCorp, and its predecessor, State Coal Mines. San Diego’s need to access underground space has dictated a long history of tunnel construction. The subsequent need for water, coupled with San Diego’s natural attractiveness, has led to significant population increases and the need for the construction of even more tunnels. This paper will provide a historical summary of the progression of mines, tunnels and trenchless technology construction projects that contributed to the advance of current technology, feasibility, and constructability. A bibliography of relevant reports and data is included.

In the course of another investigation4 during 1926 and 1927, samples of water collected from a few abandoned coal mines indicated that their drainage was usually lower in acidity than water from active mines in the same locality. In order to determine whether this condition might have a bearing on the advisability of sealing abandoned mines, a number of such mines were visited, samples of drainage were collected, and as much information as possible was obtained from officials of the mining companies and older residents of the district.
