In connection with certain cooperative work carried on between the Ordnance Department of the U. S. Army, the U. S. Bureau of Mines, and the U. S. Geological Survey during the year 1918, it was the writers' privilege to make metallographic examinations of a great many test bars and other pieces of nickel-steel gun forgings. The material studied came from many different steel plants throughout the country and consisted both of forgings that had been accepted by the Ordnance Department and those that had failed to pass the specified physical tests. In general, these tests require a minimum tensile strength of 95,000 lb. (42,091 kg.)! an elastic limit of 65,000 lb. (29,483 kg.), an 18 per cent, elongation, and a 30 per cent. reduction in area. An average chemical composition of the steel studied is 0.38 per cent. carbon and 2.9 per cent. nickel. The steel was of both basic electric and basic open-hearth manufacture. The object of the metallographic work was twofold: to assist in detecting defects in the steel and, if possible, to suggest remedies for the same; and to obtain as much information as possible in regard to the relation of the microstructure of the metal to its physical properties. The grcatcr part of the investigation was devoted to defective metal that failed to pass the ordnance specifications. Many types and kinds of more or less serious defects thus came under observation, but most of these were due to the attempts by the manufacturer to meet the enormous demand for ordnance steel with more or less inadequate equipment, and were soon remedied. Two defects, the so-called "flakes" or "snowflakes" and a certain "fibrous" or "woody" fracture, were encountered so frequently and were so disastrous to the steel that the greater part of the study was devoted to them. (Read at the Philadelphia Meeting, February, 1878.) IN a former paper* attention was directed to the various firms of pumping machines employed for permanent work in mining and metallurgical processes. The following is simply a collection of memoranda of work done of a temporary character, and is presented by way of comparison with other work of similar nature. In close proximity to the charcoal furnace at Pine Grove, Cumberland County, Pa., is a large deposit of superior hematite iron ore, which has been worked for a number of years, and from which many thousand tons of ore have been taken by open pit workings. In July, 1874, the furnace was blown out and operations at the bank suspended, the machinery for draining being removed except a plunger pump, 18 inches in diameter and 66 inches stroke, operated by a steam-engine by means of rods. The pit was allowed to fill with water, and no steps towards its reclamation were taken until November, 1877. At that time the pit was a pond of water at the base of the mountain, having an area of about four acres and a depth of seventy feet. As the pumps, rods, etc., had been submerged for over three years, and partially buried by the mud washed down from the banks, and as it was determined to change the location of the pump for future operations and drive it by water-power, a temporary pumping apparatus was determined upon for reclaiming the pit and keeping it drained until the permanent arrangements could be completed. By opening an old adit about 10 feet of the water was removed, and the area decreased to three acres. The inflow of springs was found to be 250 gallons per minute, and the amount of water contained in the pit was computed to be 45,000,000 gallons. As the inflow would undoubtedly increase while the water sank in the pit, provision was made for removing at least 60,000,000 gallons, at the rate of 1,500,000 to 2,000,000 gallons per day. The company determined to employ a Heald and Cisco centrifugal pump driven by an oscillating engine by means of a belt. An open cast mine on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand proposes to remove up to 30 m of overburden to access an ore body neighbouring National Reserve land. Part of the conditions of the mining permit is that no material above natural discharge levels may be released over the Mining Lease boundary onto the adjacent land. In order to meet this requirement, the client has contracted the design and installation of over 2.6 km of high energy dynamic rockfall control barriers. This paper describes how the rockfall hazards were assessed and the rockfall barriers dimensioned. The design involved 2D modelling of over 3000 simulations.   Modelling parameters were calibrated during field trials at a purpose built section of barrier. The resultant energies ranged from 500 to 3000 kJ. The construction phase of the project involved the drilling, anchoring, and installation of certified barriers up to 7 m high in a remote and inhospitable climate with limited machinery access. By exploring best practice in this specialized field of engineering, a novel rockfall hazard mitigation solution was identified.

A number of geometallurgical tests have been developed within the AMIRA P843A Geometallurgical Mapping and Mine Modelling (GeMIII) project, an interdisciplinary collaborative research project involving four research groups and over 20 global mineral companies. Researchers at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) have been focusing on the development of predictive hydrometallurgical indices for the GeMIII project via rapid, small-scale, cost-effective tests and protocols for comparative ranking of attributes relevant to leach performance. One of the focus areas has been the development of a leaching scheme for determination of the mineralogical deportment of copper in a large number of samples for geometallurgical applications.Various leaching schemes have been used over the last 20 years to identify the mineralogical deportment of copper. Typically, weak sulfuric acid and cyanide are used to target copper oxides and æsecondaryÆ copper sulfide minerals, covellite, chalcocite and bornite, respectively. Residual copper is assigned to chalcopyrite and/or bornite. Adaptations of this scheme have included the use of a weak organic acid to target oxides or ferric sulfate to target secondary copper sulfides. Testing of the weak acid/cyanide scheme in the GeMIII project using head and residue QEMSCAN mineralogical data analysed with a statistically reliable comparison method indicated that the inferred mineralogical deportment from various leaches could differ markedly from the theoretical or assumed value. Based on this initial work, test development and leach tests on samples from multiple sites has resulted in the development of a scheme to target copper oxides, chalcocite, covellite, bornite and chalcopyrite. This paper presents results from leach tests conducted on a large sample suite from two pits in a Cu-Au ore deposit with results calibrated using mineral liberation analyser (MLA) mineralogical analysis. Literature was searched and cases of alleged water well damage were investigated. Occurrence of ground water in Appalachia is primarily in low yield, fractured, water table aquifers. Four test sites were chosen based on geographic and geologic diversity. Test wells were drilled at each site and base line data on water quality, static water level, and drawdown characteristics were obtained before surface mining commenced. Blast induced ground vibrations were measured at the surface by the wells at levels up to 5.44 inches per second maximum resultant particle velocity. Measurements made at the bottom of wells indicated that vibrations were considerably attenuated at depths of 140 to 160 feet. No direct evidence of change in water quality or well performance was produced by blast vibrations, but removal of downslope support by excavation does cause lateral stress relief which permits the water-bearing fractures to become more open. This additional storage capacity causes the static water level to drop and for well-bore permeability to improve. THE lead-telluride phase diagram as compiled by ansen' has one intermetallic compound, PbTe, with solid-solubility limits extending from 22 to 45 wt pct Te (31.4 to 57.1 at. pct). Pelzel2 redetermined the solubility limits on the lead-rich side of the compound by measuring the relative areas of the two phases in samples annealed in the liquid + compound region, and obtained data that agreed with that of Hansen. Recent studies of the semiconducting properties of PbTe3 however, have indicated that addition of either lead or tellurium to PbTe does not produce samples having carrier concentrations greater than about 10 19 cm-3. Assuming that each impurity atom results in one ionized charge carrier, this carrier concentration corresponds to a solubility range of less than 0.04 at. pct. Fritts and Karrar4 have also observed two phases in samples containing from 0.15 to 3.0 pct excess Pb. To resolve the discrepancy between these data, the solid solubility limits of the compound PbTe were reinvestigated, using several other techniques. Ten 25-g samples with compositions of 1/2, 1, 3, 5, and 10 wt pct excess Pb and Te and two 100-g samples of 15 and 65 wt pct Te were prepared, sealed in evacuated quartz capsules, and melted at 950oC. The 1 pct excess Pb and Te and the 15 and 65 wt pct Te alloys were homogenized for 96 hr at 450°C; the remaining specimens were annealed 50°C below the solidus temperature reported in Hansen. The specimens were polished and etched with dilute HNO,. All the samples were two phase, the second phase appearing at grain boundaries or as spheroidized inclusions in the grains. In the case of the tellurium rich specimens, the second phase could be identified as a eutectic. Debye-Scherrer powder diffraction patterns of the i, 1, 3, 5, and 10 pct excess samples were obtained using CuKa filtered radiation. The films were indexed as the B1 or NaCl structure. The calculated lattice parameter of PbTe was the same for all the specimens, with an average of a0 = 6.460 ± 0.0005A. Lines due to excess lead or tellurium were very faint but could be clearly seen in all the films. The relative areas of the two phases in the 15 and 65 wt pct Te samples were corrected for the differences in density of Pb, Te, and PbTe, and taken as proportional to the relative volumes of the two phases. The corrected relative volumes agreed with a phase diagram having negligible solubility of both lead and tellurium in lead tellurium. The density of the two specimens was obtained to give a third independent determination of the phase limits. The specimens were broken into small pieces to eliminate any internal porosity, and adherent air bubbles were removed by vigorous shaking under water for several hours. The density of lead (11.34 g per cm3) and of tellurium (6.25 g per cm3) was taken from the International Critical Tables and that of stoichiometric PbTe (8.25 g per cm3) calculated from the lattice parameter. For the 15 wt pct Te samples, the density assuming no solubility was calculated to be 9.89 g per cm3; the observed density was 9.86 g per cm8. For the 65 wt pct Te alloy, the density calculated for the case of no solubility was 7.24 g per cm3; the measured density wag 7.22 g per cm3. Bio-epigenetic sulphur deposits occur in Pecos, Reeves and Culberson counties of far West Texas. Sulfate reducing bacteria, utilizing hydrocarbons as energy, transformed gypsum into replacement limestone and hydrogen sulfide. Hydrogen sulfide, retained in the pores of the replacement limestone, was subsequently oxidized by highly oxygenated groundwaters, and native sulphur precipitated. West Texas sulphur was first recognized at surface exposures by William P. Blake, a geologist attached to the Captain Pope Military/ Scientific Expedition of 1854. Attempts were made in the early 1900's to mine these sulphur vent exposures by a retort method, but the ventures met with little success. In 1967, Duval discovered a large sulphur deposit near some of the old sulphur works in Culberson County. Duval also expanded reserves in a small sulphur deposit in Pecos County. The Frasch process, developed for producing sulphur from Gulf Coast salt domes, proved successful in West Texas type sulphur deposits also. However, modifications of the process were necessary to provide economical and efficient sulphur recovery from the varied ore occurrences. West Texas conditions and logistics require the ultimate in productivity to be competitive in the domestic and foreign sulphur markets. Several companies, in addition to Duval, are producing or have produced sulphur in West Texas. As of June 1, 1984, a total of 29.87 million mt (29.4 million long tons) of sulphur had been produced west of the Pecos River. Duval corporation has produced more than 88 percent of that total.

A series of controlled seismic experiments was performed in a limestone quarry in southern Germany to study seismic effects of cylindrical charges fired in both a half space (HS) (burden 63 m) and quarter space (QS) (burdens of 3 and 3.5 m) geometry. Charge columns contained from 20-32 kg of explosives and initiated from the bottom. The explosives formed a cylinder 4 m (20 kg) and 5 m (32 kg) high and 90 mm in diameter at depths from 3-8 m below ground level. Prior to each of the larger explosions, small charges of 0.12 kg seismogelit were fired at 4 m and 8 m depths in the same boreholes. Seismograms were obtained from 23 three component surface stations and up to 10 three component borehole stations (6 m depth). For each experiment, stations were located on three linear profiles of length 72 m at different azimuths from the source and one semicircular profile at a constant range of 30 m.

"Introduction.The Bureau of Mines at its Northwest Experiment station has been studying the production of sponge iron for the past four years, and during 1923 progress advanced to the point industrial applications can be safely considered. A furnace was operated commercially at silver City, Utah, producing about three tons of sponge iron daily.The Bureau was led to undertake this work by the interest in the use of sponge iron for copper precipitation and for conversion to iron and steel in the electric furnace.If a piece of iron oxide is completely reduced at such a low temperature (850 to 900° C) that no sintering or fusion takes place, then the piece of metallic iron formed has the same size and shape as the original piece of oxide on account of the removal of oxygen, the structure is finely porous, exposing a large surface of iron, and the apparent density is less than that of the original piece of iron oxide. This material is called ""sponge iron"". Chemically, it is a very reactive material."

Lemkein seamount located in the west of the Kuwajleen Atoll of RMI is a relatively samll, simple-shaped, peaked type seamount with its base at 4,500 m and summit at 1,452 m water depths. Ferromanganese crusts were identified in the water depth range between 2,000 m and 2,500 m, and they were mostly observed on the northern slopes of the seamount. Among various substrate rocks, breccia occurred most commonly with crusts and formed the thickest crust layers. Average thickness of the Lemkein crusts was about 5 cm. Their chemical compositions were similar to other crusts found in the RMI area; Mn=25.82%, Fe=15.29%, Co=0.74%, Ni=0.56%. Lemkein crusts were characterized by their four distinctive internal layers; 1) Massive Layer 1; 2)Porous, Fe-stained or sediment infilled Layer 2; 3) Massive to slightly porous Layer 3; and, 4)Massive, Dense, Phosphotized, CFA veined Layer 4. Layers 1 and 2 were generally similar in composition, but highest Co concentrations were measured in Layer 1 while relatively higher concentrations of Al, Rb, Fe, and Ti were observed in Layer 2. Layer 3 showed higher concentrations of Ca and P than Layers 1 and 2. Based on the Co-chronography, the age of Layer 1 is 0¡?6 Ma (growth rate = 1.50 mm/Ma), Layer 2 is 6¡?15 Ma (1.75 mm/Ma), Layer 3 is 15¡?27Ma (1.76 mm/Ma), and Layer 4 is 27¡?45 Ma (2.06 mm/Ma). These preliminary results indicated that high Co contents in Layer 1 resulted from slow growth rates; Layer 2 was formed under relatively strong influence of high terrestrial input; and, Layer 3 was probably affected by a minor phosphatization event occurring in 15 Ma.

"The 1580 m long dual-tube motorway tunnel Markusberg near Schengen, Luxembourg experiences strong swelling phenomena in each tube related to a 35 m wide diagonally crossing rock layer, some150 to 200m from the east portals. Overburden over the roadway is 26 to 30 meters. Tunnel construction started in 1998 and the tunnel was opened in 2003. The tunnel was driven downgrade from the West, the heave phenomenon started to occur as the tunnel approached completion. No indications of the presence of anhydrite and dissolved sulphates were known prior to tunnelling. Water samples had been taken from the beginning of construction and the concentration of anions and cat ions determined. Sulfate content was substantial, in one well it reached 22 mg/l, this high concentration requires the presence of other ions, in particular sodium and chlorine. Based on the knowledge at the time of construction heaving ground was removed from the tunnel invert and a free space was left below the roadway that is covered by a transversely spanned slab. In addition a series of posttensioned tiebacks were installed below the sidewalls. The void left in 2003 was 1.7m high and closed to less than 0.5 meters in 2007 then it became necessary to widen the free space. A central trench was dug with a height of about 2.5 meters and the benches were lowered.Level surveying had been carried out since 2002. In 2006 two extensometers were installed, one in the zone of strongest heave, the second at the edge of the swelling zone. The extensometer in the center of the swelling zone indicated heave with an essential constant rate with seasonal variations, the heave is concentrated in layer from 2 to 5 meters that heaved by nearly 300 millimeters within 5 years or 60 mm/year, which equals to approx. 1% extension per year. At the abutments heave rates of 20 mm/year where the support resistance is higher were observed. With data from other case histories a relation of heave rate with support resistance was established. Based on the numerous field observations hypotheses for the complex in-situ swelling processes, involving rock mechanics, mineralogical, soil mechanics and hydrogeological aspects were developed"

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated CaF2-assisted H2SO4 leaching to extract Mn from domestic silicate manganese resources. A pyroxmangite ((Mn,Fe)Sio3) ore containing, in pct, 34 Mn, 23 Si, 3 Ca, and 1 Fe was leached at 90° C for 3 h in a solution containing, in g/L, 12 Mn, 140 H2SO4, 130 (NH4)2SO4, and 5 CaFz. Manganese extraction of 92 pct was achieved. Manganese of greater than 99 pct purity was prepared by electrolyzing the purified pregnant solution at a current density of 50 mA/cm2. The current efficiency was 65 pct.

Research performed on computer modeling of mine power systems under USBM Grant G0155003 1S described. The work was performed at the Pennsylvania State University from 5 November 1975 through 4 November 1976. Results presented are interim in nature, and future research is planned to integrate the simulations which have been developed. The thrust of this research has been divided into three main areas. 1. Modification of a previously developed model (Mine Power System Simulation or MPSS) to include interactive operation and the use of default (average) load data. 2. Development of a dynamic simulation of interdependent mine power system induction motors. 3. Development of an approach to modeling of motor shaft loading of induction machines for mining operations. During the course of the current year's research, significant results have been achieved in all areas. Construction of an interactive MPSS model has been completed and checked. This simulation was written in APL code and is fully interactive. In addition, default data representing 158 different pieces of mining equipment has been developed for use with the interactive model. Additional work described includes the construction of a dynamic simulation of interdependent continuous miner induction motors and the development of an approach fo: motor shaft load torque computation from experimental data.

The Bureau of Mines performed chemical research to elaborate details of sulfur chemistry pertaining to the citrate flue gas desulfurization process in which sulfur dioxide (SO2), absorbed (as bisulfite ion) in a buffered sodium citrate solution, is reduced by hydrogen sulfide (H2S) according to the overall reaction 2H2S + HSO3 + H+ ? 3S + 3H20. The rate-limiting step in the process was shown to be the reduction by H2S of thiosulfate (S2031-) that is formed as an intermediate. Pseudo first-order kinetic measurements were made at room temperature to retard the reaction sufficiently that adequate analysis was possible. These measurements showed the rates of the following net processes to be -d [S02]/dt (pH 4.5) = (0.409±0.050)min-1 [S02]; d [S2032-]/dt (pH 4.5) = (0.199±0.017)min-1 [S02]; -d [S2032-]/dt (pH 4.0) = (0.0437±0.0265)min-1 [S2032-]~1; -dH2S/dt (pH 3.9) = (21.6±3.0) mmoles/min-atm [H2S]g1.4, where [H2S]g is the partial pressure of H2S in the gas phase, in atmospheres, and the rate describes the consumption of H2S, in millimoles per minute; d[S]/dt (pH 4.0) = (38.0±3.4)min-1 [H2S]1, where [H2S] is the concentration of H2S in solution. Hydrogen ion consumption during the slow phase of regeneration was shown to occur at (2.1±0.5) times he rate of thiosulfate consumption, which is interpreted as evidence for the following as the rate-limiting reaction: 2H2S + S2032- + 2H+ ? 4S + 3H20 A scheme consisting of five sequential general reactions is proposed to account for sulfur formation.

A catalog of the maps that have been microfilmed in the Eastern Middle anthracite field--the first area to be covered in the program--is presented. Additional catalogs will be published as significant mining areas are completed.
