ABOUT 15 varieties, or modifications, of the best magnesium available were prepared and subjected to etching tests, then examined for microstructure. Of the 30-odd etching reagents that were tried, nearly half, mostly ammonium salts, etched the metal satisfactorily. The surfacing and etching of magnesium is shown to be a very simple and quick operation. The density and hardness of magnesium were determined. The most interesting new observations relate to the finding of the hexagonal etch figures, the crystal laminations, and the fact that the metal is plastic, cold, when restrained or quickly deformed. Under slowly applied pressure cold metal deforms slightly, then shears to fracture without plastic flow. The chief structural features of magnesium are presented in two reduced photographs and 30 photomicrographs. MATERIALS TESTED There are only two sources in the United States from which new metal can be procured: the American Magnesium Corpn. and the Dow Chemical Co. No pronounced structural or property differences in the metals from these two companies were disclosed by the work of this investigation. The following materials were obtained from the manufacturers: 1. Massive crystals of distilled metal (American Magnesium Corpn.). 2. Rods of hot-extruded metal, ½ -in. squares and 5/8-in. rounds (American Magnesium Corpn.). 3. Sheet magnesium, 0.005-in. thick (American Magnesium Corpn.). 4. Cast stick metal, 1 3/8-in. dia. (Dow Chemical Co.). 5. Magnesium-aluminum alloy, hot-rolled plate, ½ in. thick (American Magnesium Corpn.). From these materials, were prepared: 6. Sections from a furnace-cooled ingot made from distilled crystal. 7. Cold-strained pieces from (6), (4) and (2). 8. Pieces cold-squeezed to fracture from (6), (4) and (2). 9. Hammer-struck pieces from (6), (4) and (2). 10. Steam-hammer struck pieces from (6), (4) and (2). 11. Sections from furnace-cooled ingot of the magnesium-aluminum alloy.

Aços inoxidáveis supermartensíticos (AISM) são aços de matriz martensítica contendo baixos teores de carbono, abaixo de 0,03%. Eles vêm sendo utilizados na indústria de óleo e gás para aplicações específicas que exigem resistência mecânica aliada a moderada resistência à corrosão. Após serem temperados para a obtenção da estrutura martensítica, esses aços são submetidos a tratamento de revenimento para alívio de tensões e melhoria das propriedades de tenacidade e ductilidade. Durante o revenimento é esperada a ocorrência de mudanças microestruturais resultantes principalmente da precipitação de diferentes fases. Tais precipitados influenciam tanto as propriedades mecânicas finais quanto a resistência à corrosão desses aços. Nesta pesquisa foi avaliada a resistência à corrosão por pite de dois AISM do tipo 13Cr5Ni2Mo, um deles contendo Nb (0,11%), através de ensaios de polarização potenciodinâmica em soluções de 0,6M NaCl sem e com adições de 0,3M e 0,6M Na2SO4. Os resultados mostraram que a adição de Na2SO4 no eletrólito contendo NaCl inibe consideravelmente a corrosão por pite. Foi constatado também que o AISM contendo Nb apresenta maior resistência à corrosão por pite nos eletrólitos de misturas de cloreto e sulfato. Além disso, os resultados mostraram que o revenimento a 575°C melhora a resistência à corrosão por pite, comparativamente ao revenimento a 600°C. O melhor potencial de pite foi obtido para o aço ao Nb, revenido a 575°C por 2h, em eletrólito 0,6Na2SO4+0,6NaCl.

A large metallurgical experiment station at Salt Lake City to house the works of the Bureau of Mines in the intermountain area properly has long been projected. It finally became possible when a Public Works Allotment of $300,000 was set aside for building and equipment. With the new building assured, the Bureau of Mines decided to move the headquarters of its Metallurgical Division from Washington, D. C., to Salt Lake City, Utah. It was felt that this move would simplify they administrative work of the chief engineer of the division, as all stations devoted primarily to metallurgical work are west of the Mississippi. These include Rolla, Mo.; Minneapolis, Minn.; Pullman, Wash.; Reno, Nev.; Berkeley, Calif.; Boulder City, Nev.; and Tucson, Ariz. In addition to these stations will groups, of investigators working on metallurgical problem, are maintained at Pittsburgh, Pa., and College Park, Md. Salt Like City was clearly a more central point for the direction of this scattered work than Washington, D. C. The building (fig. 1, A and B) was designed from general plans worked out by the authors of this paper. Contraction was begun in March of 1939, and by the end of the year the Metallurgical Division had moved, into its now quarters.

Previous work performed under Contract H0220003 suggested that the mean incombustible content could be obtained with fewer samples and smaller samples without greatly increasing the sampling error. Under Modification No. 4 additional surveys were made in twelve coal mines, representing six states. Same 2,500 samples were collected, analyzed for incombustible content, and statistically evaluated. The earlier findings were substantiated.

Two years ago the general features of the St. Joseph Lead Company's zinc-smelting process were described.1 At that time the discussion was limited to a description of the production of high-purity electrothermic zinc oxide. The present paper will describe the commercial production of electrothermic zinc metal. Since a fairly complete description of the plant of the Josephtown smelter was given in the earlier paper, the brief recapitulation given here will be limited to mention of additional equip-ment recently installed and a bare outline of the preparatory process. The raw material is zinc sulphide concentrate received from the com-pany's mines in St. Lawrence County, New York. An average dry-weight analysis of this material is: Zn, 58.28 per cent; Pb, 0.56; insoluble, 1.6; Si02, 1.12; Fe, 6.4; CaO, 0.47; MgO, 0.27; S, 31.9; Cd, 0.1; Cu, 0.06; Mn, 0.24. Moisture content is usually about 3 per cent. Three 21-ft. 6-in. diameter, 12-hearth Nichols-Herreshoff furnaces roast the concen-trate to a calcine of average composition (first 10 months of 1938) : Zn, 67.69 per cent; Pb, 0.06; insoluble, 1.75; Si02, 1.26; Fe, 7.24; CaO, 0.47; MgO, 0.36; S, 1.88; Cd, 0.1; Cu, 0.07; Mn, 0.27. The sulphur dioxide gas, after passing through a waste-heat boiler, proceeds through a recently redesigned low-resistance gas-purification assembly to the contact sul-phuric acid plant, of which the capacity is 200 tons of concentrates per day. The calcine is mixed with a portion of returned furnace residues and sintered on 42-in. by 44-ft. Dwight-Lloyd sintering machines, gas-fired. Wind-box gases pass through air coolers before filtering in a 1440-bag Dracco unit, and thence to stack. The Dracco fume is mixed with Cottrell dust, from roaster gas cleaning, and sent to the leach plant, where it is roasted (SO2 to acid plant) and leached with sulphuric acid to recover, as end products, lead sulphate, zinc sulphate and cadmium.

Suggested thermal stress limits for safe physiological strain in underground environments by J. M. STEW ART M.Sc. (Eng) (Witwatersrand) (Visitor) and C. H. WYNDHAM M.B., D.Sc. (Land) (Fellow) A comparison of safe temperature limits, based on Mitchell and Whillier's equations for specific cooling power (SCP), with similar limits determined experimentally shows the SCP-based limits to be unnecessarily conservative. It is argued that, while a small part of this conservatism may be attributed to an erroneous extrapolation of the heat transfer dependence on wind speed, the major part is probably due to the use of too Iowa limiting mean skin temperature in the calculation of SCP. A combination of Mitche/l's basic data with results available in the literature permits the derivation of modified heat transfer equations based on data that fully cover the range of wind speeds of interest. These equations, using a mean skin temperature of 36°C as the basis for the calculation of safe temperature limits, are then shown to agree favourably with those determined empirically. Furthermore, values of SCP based on these equations are shown to correlate reasonably well with wet kata readings, giving positive support to the wet kata thermometer as a heat stress meter.

Physiol. 252 (Cell Physiol. 21 ): C677-C683, 1987.-An electrooptical method was developed to quantify superoxide (02) release from single rat pulmonary alveolar macrophages (PAM) during adherence to the bottom of a culture dish. This was done by measuring the reduction of nitro blue tetrazolium (NBT) to a diformazan precipitate at 550 nm from videorecorded images of individual cells. Temporal changes in cell optical density, which are proportional to the mass of diformazan produced, were calculated from videophotometric measurements of the change in light intensity over individual cells. Total diformazan produced increased 78 and 1263 with an increase in NBT from 0.5 to 1.0 and 2.0 mg/ml, respectively. Total diformazan produced and maximum rate of production among individual PAM varied two- to threefold providing strong evidence for heterogeneity in 02 production. Specific inhibition of 02 production by superoxide dismutase, iodoacetate, and chlorpromazine significantly reduced the total diformazan produced and maximum rate of diformazan production. Hydrogen peroxide was not involved in NBT reduction, since catalase alone did not significantly change diformazan production. This novel method to quantify 02 release from single PAM should be valuable in analyzing heterogeneity and single cell kinetics of O; production, in assessing the effects of exposure of cells to particulates on O; release, and in relating release to electrophysiological measurements.rat; nitro blue tetrazolium; macrophage heterogeneity; single cell kinetic PULMONARY ALVEOLAR MACROPHAGES (PAM) protect the lungs by phagocytizing foreign debris and bacteria (24). This process involves ingestion as well as destruction of foreign matter. Phagocytosis is usually accompanied by a respiratory burst that increases cellular oxygen consumption and glucose metabolism in the hexose monophosphate shunt (7), which leads to the release of highly reactive oxygen metabolites at the surface of the · plasma membrane (6, 27). These agents have been implicated in the killing of bacteria by phagocytes (22), but have also been shown to be toxic and have been linked to cancer, emphysema, arthritis, diabetes, and other diseases (17, 22, 30). Toxic effects may be a result of either an abnormally low production of metabolites, resulting in damage to lung tissue by respirable bacteria and dusts, or an abnormally high production, resulting in direct damage to lung tissue by metabolites themselves."

The United States has not begun commercial operations to tap its largest poten-tial sources of oil supply - oil shale and coal. The reason is that domestic petrol-eum has been plentiful in the past and liquid products probably could be produced from it at the lowest cost. In view of the ever-increasing need for petroleum in the United States, the critical international situation threatening foreign supplies, the growing demands for steel, and the heavy costs to industry of constantly discovering and developing new oil fields, it is believed that the prompt development of a synthetic fuel industry based on oil shale and coal is not only requisite to safeguard our oil supply but is an economically sound course for the foreseeable future. To neglect its development is to close our eyes and minds to our own resources at a time when they are needed critically. It also is apparent now that neither the Government nor industry would be taking any considerable economic risk in starting the initial plants, especially as measured against their potential value in meeting critical oil and chemical demands and in building a new industry in the West.

The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heating value of the coal, expressed in British thermal units, and the composition as shown by proximate analyses. To these, when required, are added the ash-softening temperature, the free-swelling index, and the Hardgrove grindability index. Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal, and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract. The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instructions5/ issued by the Bureau of Mines; the samples are analyzed in the Bureau laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor and, if it is not, a price adjustment is made. Analyses of the delivered coal and tipple samples (samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks) provide valuable data for use in evaluating future bids. In addition, the continuous sampling of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal.

At a time of resource consumption, it is important to study the chemical composition of mining and metallurgical wastes to prevent the dissipative loss of metals and metalloids from the mining value chain. In particular, the recovery of critical elements from wastes is an option to increase the resources of such materials that are economically significant and have an overall supply risk. In this paper we report on the chemical composition, in particular the critical element content, of granulated slag originating from historical smelting activities in the Tsumeb area, Namibia. Laboratory-based inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyses as well as portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) demonstrate that the slags are on average enriched in base metals (Cu 0.7 wt%, Pb 2.7 wt%, Zn 4.7 wt%), trace metals and metalloids (Cd approx. 50 mg/kg, Mo approx. 910 mg/kg) as well as critical elements (As approx. 6300 mg/kg, Bi approx. 3 mg/kg, Co approx. 200 mg/kg, Ga approx. 100 mg/kg, In approx. 9 mg/kg, Sb approx. 470 mg/kg). While metals and metalloids such as As, Mo and Pb can be determined reliably using pXRF instruments, the technique has inherent limitations in evaluating the contents of certain critical elements (Ga, Sb). However, there are positive correlations between the As, Mo, and Pb contents determined by pXRF and the Ga and Sb contents obtained through ICP-MS and XRF. Thus, quantitative pXRF analysis for As, Mo, and Pb allows calculation of Ga and Sb abundances in the slags. This work demonstrates that pXRF analysers are a valuable tool to screen smelting slags for their chemical composition and to predict the likely contents of critical elements.

Feed flow from each cone is regulated by an apron feeder which transfers the oil sand to conveyors that discharge into the conditioning drums. Weightometers on each of these five conveyors measure the rate at which the oil sand is delivered into the drums. The oil sand feed rate to each drum can be adjusted by varying the speed of the apron feeders."

The objective of this study has been to determine the state of the art in underground, thin-seam-mining systems, to identify new technology and procedures that would reduce the hazards of thin-seam mining and to recommend areas for further research. The study was carried out in two phases, the first of these being devoted to a survey of authoritative literature. Subsequently, the practices adopted in the various mining countries were analysed and comparisons made to identify machines and methods with the potential for application in the USA. Published figures on US bituminous coal reserves show the high proportion contained in thin seams and US accident statistics demonstrate that the risk is greater in thin-seam operations. A comparison has been made with the experiences of foreign operations. The Phase 11 study proceeded along two separate avenues to examine the distinctive problems associated with seam thicknesses above and below 30 in. Current systems of mining appropriate to seams greater than 30 in were elaborated and compared by means of a simulation exercise in terms of safety, production and cost. For seams below 30 in, less conventional systems, some presently disused, were studied and their potential evaluated; the research and development work necessary to make them viable has been indicated.

The object of this report is to present certain pertinent data on the physical and chemical properties of South Arcot lignite and to present the results of several special tests to show how the raw lignite can be upgraded to superior fuels for certain special uses. The Bureau of Mines Branch of Coal Technology laboratories at Denver have advocated the drying and carbonization of all low-rank fuels for special uses and have introduced and developed new techniques for upgrading and refining noncoking coals. Application of these techniques to the South Arcot lignites was the object of the investigation, and this report presents significant data necessary for planning a fuel program based on utilization of dried and carbonized dusts. In general, the South Arcot lignite is similar in chemical properties to the high-moisture lignites found in the United States and has some physical properties similar to Australian brown coals. The samples submitted for test had lost moisture before delivery to the laboratory, and it has been necessary to estimate the analysis of the lignite in place in the mine. Various observations made in India by qualified technicians indicate that the bed moisture content of the entire seam is in the range of 54 to 56 percent. For estimating purposes in this report, the bed moisture content has been taken as 56 percent and the ash content of the fresh coal as 2.5 percent. This examination of Pacific Northwest (Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington) ferrous scrap-industry operations, principally those in Oregon and Washington, points out factors influencing the supply and consumption of scrap materials, such as the complete dependence of steel ingot producers in these States on scrap as a metal raw material and the sizable quantity of scrap exported from Seattle and Portland to Japan. The pattern of the industry is presented as a movement of materials from their diverse sources to the consuming market. The geographic locations of the consuming industries in relation to the areas generating scrap materials and the movement pattern of the supply from source to destination strongly influences the cost of the commodity. The best measure of the scrap supply available in an area is experience in terms of how much scrap was withdrawn at a given price. Scrap availability is not finite, because the return of materials as scrap is secular and influenced by constantly varying market conditions. Steel ingot producers use 75 percent of the approximate 500,000 tons of scrap consumed in Oregon and Washington; steel foundries take 15 percent of the total; and iron foundries, ferroalloy plants, and other miscellaneous consumers utilize the remainder. Also, from 1955 to 1960 an average of about 200,000 tons has been exported annually from Oregon and Washington. The foreign exports are supplemented by lesser shipments to other steel producing States, principally in the western United States. From 1955 to 1960 the preferred and higher value heavy melting scrap grades accounted for about 60 percent of total withdrawals which varied between 600,000 and 950,000 tons annually. Total crap withdrawals from Oregon and Washington are projected to 1.8 million tons by 1985, 60 percent (1.1 million tons) of which will be heavy melting grades. No. 1 heavy melting scrap is most attractive to scrap consumers at $35 per ton or less. Price-supply relationships compared with projected scrap requirements indicate future prices possibly over $35 per ton. High prices over a long period could motivate the Pacific Northwest scrap consumers to produce steel from iron ore. However, technologic changes taking place at integrated steel plants could reduce scrap withdrawals from the Pacific Northwest, which might keep the scrap price sufficiently attractive to obviate production of competitive iron products by the Pacific Northwest scrap consumers.

This report describes the results of a measurement and analysis program to characterize wireless radio transmission in metal/non-metal mines over a wide frequency range from 0.2 - 1000 MHz and over a variety of mine environments. Six mines were chosen based on the relative economic significance of their product to the U.S. economy. Mine types include oil shale, uranium, potash, lead/zinc, copper, and silver. Particular mines were chosen so that the group would embody the most important mining techniques. The results show that transmission at medium frequencies are optimum for wireless mine communications, in agreement with extensive testing previously performed by the authors in coal mines, and that mine-wide wireless systems are feasible with a minimum requirement for new dedicated wiring. At least one need for such a wireless system was identified in each mine visited.

Oscar Johnson—In my opinion, the effect of mill speeds on grinding costs must be studied along with capital investment and dollars gathered together as profits. Comparing the entire groups of operators with those who have had the opportunity to make slow-speed mill studies, I think you will find the latter small in numbers. Most managers want the equipment worked to its maximum output. There are, however, some installations where plant and mill sizes are such that they can do the job with reduction of mill barrel speeds. The past and the present installations of the industry are laid out to get the most capacity for the least capital outlay. This is the case even with the plants of Chile Exploration, International Nickel, Morocco, and Anaconda, now under construction or being changed. The industry recognizes that most all equipment it buys today is good and can be depended upon for efficient performance. Under this scheme of things, I am doubtful that slow-speed ball mill operation will be generally applicable. With reference to the U. S. Bureau of Mines laboratory tests, I think table II could have been omitted. It is inconclusive as to maximum efficiency for the low-pulp level mill on hard ore. There should be no question about this point. However, data on mill speeds can be found to substantiate various theories as well as refute them. Gow, Guggenheim, Campbell and Coghill, in their paper on Ball Milling,' believe their 2 x 2 ft laboratory mill reflects results that can be expected from large mills. If so, then referring to their table 11, they state, "The conclusion to be drawn from this second series is that high speed, not exceeding 72 pct of the critical, favors capacity, as before, but that with proper conditions of operation high speeds may give as good efficiency values as low speeds. In this case the efficiency values are nearly constant. A horizontal curve would indicate that the amount of grinding was directly proportional to the power expended, and these tests suggest that such a coildition can be made to exist in commercial operations." But, one must realize that there are many variables that effect the efficiency of grinding mill operation, and too much must not be assumed as to the effect of some specific change. Possibly with changes in mill speed, the results might be more consistent by also a change in ball rationing, type of ball, volume of ball charge,. p.ulp level and amount of pulp in the mill, pulp consisting, design of liner, circulating load, etc. Also, changes in ore character must be reckoned with when evaluating grinding performance. At present the Climax Molybdenum Corp. is running at much reduced capacity. Mr. James Duggan informs me that at mill speeds of 17 rpm, they save a $0.025 per ton on liners and $0.025 per ton in power, but, if the demand for molybdenum increased, he would go back to higher speed to obtain maximum tonnage, as the values from the increased tonnage would far more than offset the one half saving at the slower speed. The Jnspiration ran a six months' test between mills running 21 rpm and 23.5 rpm. The slower mills ground 10 pct less ore with a slight saving per ton, but when the reduced plant tonnage was checked back into the actual cost figures of concentration, the high-speed mills with their greater tonnage showed considerable advantage. To be convinced of possible practical results from the predictions in the conclusions, I think we would have to rely on the analysis of expert cost accountants to furnish the necessary proof figures. Hardinge and Ferguson are to be commended for the work in preparing this paper. I am convinced that our Massco engineers should go into higher speeds with our equipment. It was on this basis and for this reason the paper was written. Mr. Johnson, on the other hand, takes the position that, on the whole, low speeds are not justified from the economic standpoint, basing his principal reason on the fact that lower mill speeds cut mill capacities and hence reduce the gross income from the product produced. There is no denying this point. It is almost axiomatic. It is for this very reason that the overall advantage of lower mill speeds has been discounted and even overlooked. It was for this reason mainly that the paper was written in the first place. It is one thing to plan an efficient operation at the outset, basing one's figures on the tonnage requirements at the time, and it is quite another to be confronted with the problem of increasing the output of an existing installation at a minimum of capital expenditure. Economic consideration of a new installation is greatly influenced by referring to an old one. Too often, the analyst assumes that if this practice is followed in the new installation, one would not go wrong. It is just here that he may be wrong. Past practice and low capital expenditure are all too frequently given priority over the engineer's analysis of operating costs. When we are able to start fresh, we should give proper weight to other economic factors which do not exist in an old installation. It is these economic factors that make it possible to spend at the outset just a little more money and get it back in a matter of months and effect big savings for years to come. F. C. Oscar Johnson—In my opinion, the effect of mill speeds on grinding costs must be studied along with capital investment and dollars gathered together as profits. Comparing the entire groups of operators with those who have had the opportunity to make slow-speed mill studies, I think you will find the latter small in numbers. Most managers want the equipment worked to its maximum output. There are, however, some installations where plant and mill sizes are such that they can do the job with reduction of mill barrel speeds. The past and the present installations of the industry are laid out to get the most capacity for the least capital outlay. This is the case even with the plants of Chile Exploration, International Nickel, Morocco, and Anaconda, now under construction or being changed. The industry recognizes that most all equipment it buys today is good and can be depended upon for efficient performance. Under this scheme of things, I am doubtful that slow-speed ball mill operation will be generally applicable. With reference to the U. S. Bureau of Mines laboratory tests, I think table II could have been omitted. It is inconclusive as to maximum efficiency for the low-pulp level mill on hard ore. There should be no question about this point. However, data on mill speeds can be found to substantiate various theories as well as refute them. Gow, Guggenheim, Campbell and Coghill, in their paper on Ball Milling,' believe their 2 x 2 ft laboratory mill reflects results that can be expected from large mills. If so, then referring to their table 11, they state, "The conclusion to be drawn from this second series is that high speed, not exceeding 72 pct of the critical, favors capacity, as before, but that with proper conditions of operation high speeds may give as good efficiency values as low speeds. In this case the efficiency values are nearly constant. A horizontal curve would indicate that the amount of grinding was directly proportional to the power expended, and these tests suggest that such a coildition can be made to exist in commercial operations." But, one must realize that there are many variables that effect the efficiency of grinding mill operation, and too much must not be assumed as to the effect of some specific change. Possibly with changes in mill speed, the results might be more consistent by also a change in ball rationing, type of ball, volume of ball charge,. p.ulp level and amount of pulp in the mill, pulp consisting, design of liner, circulating load, etc. Also, changes in ore character must be reckoned with when evaluating grinding performance. The influence of surfactants on the crystallization of calcium sulfate was investigated in both hatch and continuous systems. The investigation was per formed at the following conditions. 343 °K, 28% P205 and with a sulfate level of 2.0%. At concentrations of 5 and 200 µgig, respectively, dodecylbenzene sulfonic acid (DBSH) and sodium diisooctil sulosuccinate (SSNa) promoted both an increase in the size and a reduction in the length/width (L/W) ratio of the calcium sulfate hydrates produced in the hatch and continuous crystallizers. Unique effects were observed in the batch system at higher DBSH concentrations. At 10 µg/g, the precipitation of hemihydrate crystals with a distinct morphology and texture occurred under conditions where dihydrate precipitation was expected. Above 50 µg/g, the precipitation of calcium sulfate hydrates was completely inhibited.
