At the beginning of the 20th century, barite was a mineral of minor importance in the USA. Its primary use was to extend lead oxide in white paint. Barite also added the special qualities of hiding power and flatness to paint. Because white lead sometimes turns black or yellow and barite does not, ground barite became a pigment on its own merit. Barium chloride was added to bricks before firing to stop efflorescence when exposed to weather. Barium carbonate or nitrate added luster and brilliance to glass. Barium chemicals were added to refining sugar, enameling iron, making oilcloths and paper collars, and in the manufacture of paper, artificial ivory, rubber and lithopone. Lithopone became a major paint ingredient in the 1920s; its use lasted until the 1950s, peaking at 150,000 metric tons of barite in both 1937 and 1947 for the manufacture of lithopone. Later in the 20th century, titanium dioxide replaced lead oxide, barite and zinc oxide in the coatings industry. In the 21st century, barite is used as a filler, extender, or weighting agent in products such as paints, plastics, and rubber. Some specific uses include its use in brake and clutch pads for automobiles, automobile paint primer for metal protection and gloss, add weight to rubber mud flaps on trucks, and add weight to the cement jacket around petroleum pipelines under water. In the metals casting industry, barite is part of mold release compounds. Because barite significantly blocks X-ray and gamma ray emissions, it is used as aggregate in high density concrete for radiation shielding around x-ray units in hospitals, nuclear power plants, and university nuclear research facilities. Ultra-pure barite consumed as liquid is used as a contrast medium in medical X-ray examinations. Barite is the raw material for barium chemicals, such as barium carbonate, which is an ingredient in faceplate glass in the cathode-ray tubes of televisions and computer monitors. In the 21st century, barite industrial uses account for an estimated 78,000 tons per year in the United States. Another barite use was patented in 1926 by the oil industry. In this patent, barite is primarily used as a non-abrasive weighting agent for drilling for oil and gas exploration and production. As a weighting agent, it provides the downward force in a water based or oil based drilling fluid for cutting through rock with a tri-cone diamond drill bit. In order to minimize the wear on the drill bit and drill stem, minimum abrasion of the weighting agent is preferred. In recent years in the USA, 95% of the barite produced and about 80% on a world basis are used as a fluid weighting material during the search for oil and gas. During the latter part of the 20th century, barite was used in the drilling mud of oil and gas wells, particularly for wells deeper than 2000 meters, and petroleum well drilling demand for barite became the mineral?s major end use during economic expansions after World War II and subsequent increased use of oil and gas in the USA. The profitability of oil and gas production had a strong effect on the number of drill rigs and consumption of barite. The United States was the leading petroleum well drilling country starting in 1970, reaching 4,530 drill rigs in December 1981, and was the largest consumer of barite. In the USA, record highs of about 2.6 million tons of barite produced and 4.3 million tons consumed were reported in 1981. From 1997 to 2006, barite production declined from 662,000 to 589,000 metric tons. However, USA imports increased from 1,470,000 to 2,530,000 metric tons for lump barite. World production of barite increased from 6,780,000 to 7,960,000 metric tons during the same period. Table 1 (see Appendix) lists USA production, imports and exports and world production from 1997 to 2006. Major sources of imported barite include China, India and Morocco. Table 2 (see Appendix) lists the USA imports and price of barite by country. China, India and Morocco are the three largest exporters of barite to the USA and the world. Vietnam is a new producer, beginning in 2006. IMPACT OF CHINA ON DRILLING GRADE BARITE In the 1970s or before, China began supplying barite to the world drilling market in order to help develop their economy. When China first entered the barite export market, their high production volume, low pricing and low ocean transport expenses to the Gulf Coast forced barite producers in the USA to supply only regional markets, such as Battle Mountain Nevada barite for the western and Rocky Mountain states and Canada. Until recently, it was China?s government policy for domestic consumers to use barite below the API 4.20 specific gravity specification, leaving higher grades for export, but this is no longer the case. In recent years the internal demand for barite in China increased tremendously as their economy rapidly developed. China reduced their former 15% VAT tax rebates to 5% for Chinese barite producers, and then eliminated all VAT tax rebates on December 15, 2006. On the supply side, some high-grade barite deposits in China have been depleted. In particular, the low heavy metals sources are less plentiful. Additional mine capacity is being developed, but the new mines are underground and therefore costs will be higher. China?s appetite for other raw materials has tied up a large portion of the world?s bulk vessel fleet, including Panamax vessels (preferred for barite ore transport). Ocean transport freight rates have increased in recent years, and receiving ports in the USA are congested with imports of higher-added-value products. The Panamax Index, which tracks maritime shipping rates, more than doubled in 2006. China has also devalued its currency from RMB8.30 to RMB7.80 per dollar. These factors are driving up the import price of crude and ground barite for drilling. In addition, in the USA, rail congestion and high fuel prices led to higher trucking rates, increasing the delivered cost of ground barite to oil customers. India is the second largest supplier of crude barite to the USA and world drilling market. It produces all of its barite from a single deposit in the Cuddapah region of Andhra Pradesh State. More than 90% of production comes from the State-owned Andhra Pradesh Mineral Development Corp., and the government continues to closely control production, export volumes, and prices. India saw a dramatic increase in barite prices as a result of its last 3-year tender in 2004. However, in 2004 and 2005 their shipments of crude barite to the USA were not significant. In 2005, India began supplying barite pulverized to meet API specifications to the Gulf Coast. In 2006, Indian production was reduced owing to severe flooding in November 2005 that curtailed mining until mid-April 2006. Morocco has been the third largest supplier of crude barite to the USA and world drilling market. In 2003 and 2004 their shipments of crude barite to the USA were not significant. In 2005, Morocco resumed shipment of crude barite to the Gulf Coast and began supplying barite ground to meet API specifications to the Gulf Coast.

One of the greatest factors in our industrial development is cheap and convenient power. Long-distance electrical transmission has now reached such a stage that it is feasible, and practicable, to utilize the water-power of the country which was heretofore too remote for consideration. In all of the changes of energy from its various sources to its electrical applications, water-power stands pre-eminent in point of economy. Power-users the world over have endeavored to utilize this force in preference to any other, and until long-distance transmission was found practicable it seemed that every available water-power in this section of the country was doing its full share for the benefit of mankind. The success of each great industrial development has been clue in a greater part to some one man one who is just a step in advance of the rest in his particular field; one who is able to grasp a situation and foresee possibilities; and, above all, one who has that indomitable pluck and perseverance which sees in each obstacle one more step toward success. Such a mail is Eugene L. Ashley, for it was through his efforts that the development of the greatest power on the Hudson river was made possible. For several years prior to 1897 the various properties along the river between Glens Falls and Palmer Falls were in the hands of speculators. These men knew the value of waterrights, but they had not the ability to assemble the properties and finance such an undertaking. In 1897 Mr. Ashley began buying these water-rights, and, after two years of litigation, title mas secured to all of the properties along each side of the river, and the Hudson River Water-Power Company was organized to construct a dam and transmit power to the surrounding cities and villages. One complete cycle, allstenite to martensite to aus-tenite, of Martensitic transformation was induced in a commercial 18 Cr-8 Ni stainless steel. Transmission electron microscopy showed that the reverse transfarmation, martensite to austenite, perpetuated the dense defect substructure of the martensite produced by the direct transformation, austenite to 'martensite, and reproduced the retained austenite matrix orientation. A general precipitation of lathlike M,,C, particles was noted to be present in, and is suggested as cause for, regions of martensite that Izad formed after a complete cycle of transformation. The habit plane of the precipitate particles was found to be within 5 a plane previously established as the habit of nitride precipitates of similar morphology in bcc iron. The direct transformation of austenite (y) to martensite (a) in metastable 300 series stainless steels has received considerable attention in the past,'-8 and the martensite product given special emphasis in recent years,9"*u but little information has been published about the reverse martensitic transformation during which bcc a martensite is converted to fcc y austenite."-" The reversal mechanism and the resulting crystallographic relationship between parent and product austenite are of fundamental concern. The reversal product, fully austenitic, and hereafter referred to as reversed austenite, exhibits a defect structure far different from its virgin counterpart. Some studies have been reported in which the structure of reversed austenite in iron nickel alloys is compared to annealed austenite with respect to austenite strengtheningM and Stabilization.' The martensite in these Fe-Ni alloys, however, shows a basic difference from that produced in stainless steels. Structurally, the Fe-Ni martensite is profusely twinned," while the (low-carbon) Fe-Cr-Ni martensite contains a high density of tangled dislocations and is apparently twin-free.I0 reediis" has recently shown in an Fe-16 Cr-12 Ni stainless alloy that this typical martensitic defect structure and the reverse transformation directly influence the structure of the reversal product. He found that much of the reversed austenite had returned to the orientation of the virgin austenite and that fine twins were formed in the austenite after the reverse transformation. This investigation was undertaken in order to describe as completely as possible the structural changes produced by a cycle of transformation in a typical 18-8 stainless steel. Although extensive research has been carried on to determine the factors affecting the explosibility of carbonaceous dusts, as much has been published on coal-dust and grain-dust explosions recent reports of loss of life and property in explosions if metal dusts emphasize the lack of information on the extent of the dust-explosion hazard in plants manufacturing or handling; aluminum, magnesium, or zinc powder, as well as other metal or mineral dusts. Early investigators believed that only the carbonaceous dusts formed explosive mixtures with air, and it was not until near the beginning of the present century that the explosibility of certain metal and mineral dusts was recognized generally. In his book, entitled "Fire and Explosion Risks," published in 1904, Von Schwartz called attention to such hazards. Many vague references to metallic-dust explosions are found in the literature, such as "a severe explosion of aluminum dust occurred in the Middle West several years ago," but very little information seems to be available on the extent of the hazard, the number of explosions, or the amount of loss caused by explosions in pants handling metallic or mineral dusts or powders other than those of a carbonaceous nature. A search of the records of insurance companies, rating bureaus, fire underwriters,and fire-protection associations as well as the files and records of Government agencies has been made to obtain authentic data on explosion losses. To indicate the extent of the hazard a summary of laboratory tests covering the explosibility of certain metal dusts, with brief reference to their uses and Methods of manufacture, and the data compiled from the information available on losses are presented in this publication.

An attempt to produce fuel from biomass waste by hydrothermal treatment has been made with expectation to effectively utilize a renewable source of energy and an unexploited energy resource. In this paper, we have used empty fruit bunch (EFB) that is a residue after recovery of crude palm oil from palm oil trees in a plantation in a tropic country. A hydrothermal treatment was conducted using a 500 mL autoclave, with alkali (K2CO3) catalyst. EFB was decomposed more by alkali catalyst of lower alkali content and rather polymerized in higher catalytic region. The functional group composition of the solid phase oil is similar independent of alkali content, however its burning characteristic became more incombustible with increasing alkali content.

The dewatering of steel industry waste sludges prior to discard or recycling often presents significant problems due to the fineness of the sludge particles, which may blind the filter medium and/or produce a cake with limited porosity, Several steel plant wastes, such as sludges from BOF and EAF gas cleaning operations exhibit not only a very fine particle size, but also some degree of magnetic character, A novel process has been developed to utilize the magnetic character of such sludges to enhance dewatering through a multi-force operation involving magnetic, chemical and vacuum forces, The process consists essentially of undertaking vacuum filtration of a flocculated sludge in a magnetic field, This is achieved by installing a permanent magnetic in a fixed position on the axis of a vacuum drum filter, thus effecting filtration of magnetic and non- magnetic particles, bound together in flocs, in a magnetic field, Previous tests using a modified laboratory vacuum drum filter treating artificial (magnetite) and industry waste (BF sludge) feeds have demonstrated that filtration capacity may be enhanced significantly with increases of up to 3000/0, An explanation of the mechanisms associated with the enhanced filtration was not obvious, and this research was undertaken to permit the cake formation in the magnetic field to be monitored to provide an insight into the manner in which particles agglomerate to form the cake. These tests revealed that the magnetic field caused magnetic particles to be aligned perpendicular to the filter surface and to form channels through which filtrate could freely pass thus increasing capacity, The effects of various magnetic fields and field strengths on the filtration process were also investigated. A simple computer model was constructed to demonstrate the proposed theory of multi-force dewatering, The model output graphically illustrated the suggested mechanism and confirmed the enhanced capacity of the novel dewatering process,

Structural similarities between the E, X, and iron carbides are illustrated. Experimental evidence regarding phase transformations occurring during ternpering reactions in finely divided carbides, thin-film carbides, and carbides which occur in steels is considered and possible mechanisms for the E — x and x — 9 transformations proposed. HOFER1 has shown that within the appropriate temperature ranges carbon monoxide will react with finely divided a iron to form either iron carbide or x iron carbide. He has shown that at an elevated temperature the E iron carbide will transform to the x iron carbide (Hagg carbide) which, upon further elevation of temperature, will transform to 9 iron carbide (cementite). Jack,2,3 using X-ray diffraction methods, has observed that during the tempering reactions occurring in steel the E iron carbide formed in the first stage of tempering passes into two-dimensional platelets of 0 iron carbide during the second stage of tempering. The three-dimensional form of the 0 carbide is formed during the third stage of tempering. Jack suggested2 that the two-dimensional platelets of 0 carbide could be related to the faulted x iron carbide. Okada and Arata4 investigated a Swedish steel containing 1.05 wt pct C and approximately 1.0 wt pct Mn using permeability measurements at low field strength. A Curie point of 360°C was observed in the quenched steel, which indicated the presence of E iron carbide. On tempering at 400°C the specimen developed a Curie point at 230°C, indicating the presence of x iron carbide, and on tempering at 700°C the specimen developed a Curie point at 190°C which was assigned to 0 iron carbide. The carbides were extracted electro-lytically and the use of X-ray diffraction techniques4r5 indicated the carbide with a Curie point of 230°C to be x iron carbide. The Curie points of the carbides are 10 to 22°C lower than the accepted values which is probably due to the presence of manganese in the carbides, since it has often been observed (e.g., Ref, 6) that a partial substitution of manganese for iron in cementite will lower the Curie point of this carbide. Hofer' summarizes additional evidence of the tempering reactions in steel in which E iron carbide, formed during the first stage of tempering, transforms to x iron carbide during the second stage of tempering. During the third stage of tempering, the x carbide disappears as the 0 carbide is formed. By carburizing thin iron films in a CO gas stream, ~a~akura' has been able to produce the E, X, and 0 iron carbides. He found that below 250°C the E iron carbide was formed; between 250" and 350°C the x iron carbide was formed and above 350°C the 0 iron carbide was formed. He has shown that the E iron carbide transforms to form x iron carbide at 380" to 400°C and that the x ir°n carbide transforms to form the 0 iron carbide at approximately 550" C; both of these phase transformations are irreversible. Hofer' presents a review of evidence to show that the sequence of reactions occurring during tempering processes subsequent to the formation of E iron carbide formed by the direct carburization of finely divided a iron is the same as the sequence of reactions which occur during the tempering processes subsequent to the formation of E iron carbide in steel during the first stage of tempering. It is evident from Nagakura's work that identical tempering reactions are found in thin films of iron which have been carburized to form iron carbide. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the structural similarities between the E, X, and 0 carbides and to suggest a possible mechanism by which regions of the E carbide, formed during the first stage of tempering, may transform to the x carbide during the second stage of tempering. For the finely divided or thin film carbides a mechanism will be proposed for the transformation of the x carbide to the 0 carbide during the third stage of tempering, although it will be suggested that there is evidence that such a transformation may not occur in steels. STRUCTURAL DATA OF THE E, X, AND 0 IRON CARBIDES € Iron Carbide. It is evident from X-ray diffractions and electron diffraction', investigations that the metal atoms in the E iron carbide form an hcp structure with lattice constants ah = 2.752A, ch = 4.3534, using electron diffraction, reports the lattice paramet$rs of the superlattice cell to be a = 4.767A, c = 4.354, c/a = 0.9134. He finds that the carbon atoms occupy the octahedral voids in the metal atom structure so as to form a hexagonal stacking sequence with its basal plane parallel to that of the metal atoms. Considerable long-range disorder occurs in the positioning of the carbon atoms, however, which is in agreement with the possible range of composition Fe2C-Fe3C discussed by Hofer.' Barton and ale" have made X-ray diffraction measurements on a sample of E iron carbide extracted from a catalyst in an organic process. Although there were few reflections recorded on the obtained X-ray powder diffraction pattern, they have proposed that the structure could belong to one of the three possible space groups p3m1, P63/mmc, or Pbcn if one assumed the composition to be Fe2C. Nagakura, using electron diffraction data, suggests a space group of P 6322 for a specimen of c iron carbide of apparent composition Fez.&. x Iron Carbide. A meeting between representatives of the Scientific and Industrial Research Council of Alberta and the Deputy Minister of Mines for Canada was held at Edmonton in May, 1929, for the purpose of formulating a co-operative plan for carrying forward studies in aid of the development of commercial methods for utilizing the bituminous sands of Alberta. It was agreed that to the Alberta Research Council should be allocated the general problem of investigation of the processes for the separating of bitumen from the sands, including studies of methods of emulsifying, dehydrating and otherwise preparing separated bitumen for industrial applications. It was further agreed that during the present year the work of the Alberta Research Council should be to continue its laboratory investigations of points of design of its separation plant; to further perfect its separation procedure; to recondition its existing separation plant at Dunvegan Yards, Edmonton, in the light of laboratory studies and to operate it for the purpose of demonstrating its efficiency; to carry on tests in emulsifying and dehydrating or otherwise preparing separated bitumen for industrial application; and on the basis of the experience gained in the operation of the preliminary plant at Dunvegan Yards to prepare and design and, as far as possible, to proceed with the erection of, a semi-commercial separation plant at a site to be chosen, probably at the bituminous sand deposits near McMurray, Alberta. This paper presents, in the main, a progress report of the carrying out of this programme.

The uranium mine environment is characterized by airborne radon-222 and its daughter products to which miners are exposed through breathing and by gamma and X rays from the uranium-235 and uranium 238 chains to which the miners are exposed externally. The nature of the radon-daughter concentrations and the methods used to define and measure the exposures are explained through an extensive review of the literature. An improved passive track-etch dosimeter for personal use is proposed which has a measurement range of about 30-400 WLH with a 95% confidence interval to ~25% for individual detector measurements in relatively stable mine air. Some measurements of these dosimeters adapted to environmental use are also presented. A program of development for enhancement of dosimeter sensitivity and greater accuracy of measurement is outlined. Extensive gamma-ray survey measurements were made in two Colorado and three New Mexico mines. Follow-up personal miner dosimetry with LiF TLDs was done at the mine with the highest exposure rates, The average miner exposure rate measured was 4.27 mR per day, or 9.3 of the maximum permissible level averaged over 13 weeks. Comparisons are made with previous mine surveys and their value in estimating miner exposure is discussed. Some depth-dose measurements made using Lucite as the absorber are evaluated.

The first report covering building materials4/ appeared in December of that year. The present paper, which deals with chemical raw materials and fertilizers, is the second of the series. The 34 years from 1910 to 1943, for which statistics are presented herein, comprise periods of uneventful peace, unparalleled prosperity, industrial depression almost to the point of stagnation, and two wars of world proportions.

This Bureau of Mines report is a study of the organizational framework of the ferrous scrap industry, of the products produced, and of the factors affecting the consumption of ferrous scrap by the steel industry. Consumption data from 27 major iron and steel firms in the States of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin during the period between 1957 to 1962 were grouped by type of iron and steel furnace production facilities to determine consumption pattern for various grades of scrap in comparison to ingot production, hot metal consumption, and home scrap generation. Grades of scrap affected by changes in scrap consumption were determined, and the pattern that emerged was analyzed. Correlation of scrap demand and its effects on scrap prices based on price of scrap receipts of No. 1 heavy melting scrap and No. 2 bundles in the Chicago area for the years 1957 through 1962 indicated that demand trends do not always affect the price of scrap, Past and present technological advancements in steelmaking processes are discussed, and their effects on the scrap industry are analyzed.

N recent reports, Sully' and Beck and coworkers' I have advanced hypotheses concerning the formation of the phase. Both of these hypotheses are based on Pauling's theories of the electronic configuration of the elements of the first transition group. Sully considered that the number of electrons which can be absorbed in filling electron "holes" is the factor which determines whether or not the structure can form. Beck suggested that the presence of a certain concentration of electron "holes" is the controlling value. It can be shown that a similar criterion can be developed without making reference to Pauling's theories. Table I shows the elements of the first transition group and the incidence of the a structure in the binary systems of these elements according to the data presently available. Also appended is the number of electrons considered to exist in the 3d-4s levels of these elements. If the atomic percentages for the phase are listed as shown in Table 11, and if the number of electrons in the 3d-4s levels per atom is calculated for the a boundary values, the results are as shown in the last column. It can be seen that the numerical values are all in the vicinity of 7 electrons per atom. This is true also for the ternary Cr-Mo-Ni IT phase, which occurs in a system in which none of the binary compositions are known to develop the phase. In the Fe-Mo binary, the high temperature a phase, which occurs at a composition of 50 atomic pct of each element, also yields a ,;1 e of 7 electrons per atom. From inspection of Tables I and 11, it develops that any series of sequential numbers which is assigned to the elements under consideration will result in the numbers pertaining to a compositions grouping themselves around one specific number. It does not follow, however, that this random number necessarily has physical significance. Such a point has already been discussed by Hume-Rothery." One interesting point develops from this study, however, and that is the position of manganese with reference to the other elements and to the phase. In the system used here, the formation of phase is associated approximately with the value of 7 electrons per atom, which is also the number of electrons per atom that manganese has. Manganese, it will be recalled, exists in three different crystal forms, none of which are the usual, simpler metallic forms; on the other hand, elements just to the left of manganese (in Table I) generally have lower coordination-number structures (body-centered cubic) than do elements to the right of manganese (face-centered cubic). The contribution to a complex crystal structure by the interalloying of elements from opposite sides of manganese is significant in that the a phase is formed in binary systems including one element from each side of manganese, with manganese capable of participating with both sides. It is indeed an interesting coincidence that manganese, with 7 electrons per atom, solidifies in complex crystal forms, and that when alloys of the transition elements are made which have seven 3d-4s electrons per atom, they, too, tend to assume a complex crystal form. From the above, it might be deduced that the study of the a phase might be advanced by a critical examination of the element manganese and how its structure is affected by small additions of elements which change the 3d-4s electrons per atom number. OHSAS 18001 is a series of international standards for occupational health and safety management. It is comprised of two parts, 18001 and 180029. OHSAS 18001 was formulated by international certifying bodies and is based on BS8800 and was first published in 19996,11. OHSAS 18001 was developed to be compatible with ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 in order to facilitate integration of quality, environment, and occupational health and safety management systems5. It is a voluntary standard and the overall aim of OHSAS 18001 is to enable organizations to control their occupational health and safety (OH&S) risks and improve overall health and safety performance5. OHSAS 18001 is widely accepted in the UK, Europe, and Asia, is gaining momentum in North and South America, and it was used as the basis and conforms to the requirements of ANSI/AIHA Z.10-2005: American National Standard for Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems. It defines a set of requirements for an occupational health and safety management system suitable for any kind and size of organization4. Businesses of all sizes are developing and implementing occupational health and safety management systems (OHSMS) that are in compliance with the OHSAS 18001 standard.

MR. NEILSON was born Aug. 12, 1842, at Philadelphia, Pa., where he died Dec. 30, 1906. His business career began with his graduation, in the class of 1862, from the Polytechnic College of the State of Pennsylvania. For a short time after graduation he was instructor in mathematics at the college, and then became associated with Messrs. Booth & Garrett, chemists, of his native city: In 1867 he was sent to the Adirondack mountains to care for mining interests of the late Jay Cooke, and spent about three years there, operating the forges at Elizabethtown, Essex county, N. Y. He also prepared an interesting monograph on Catalan forges and their operations. In 1868 he published a chart showing the material progress of the United States, and the cost of certain staple products during a series of years, which is believed to be the first of its kind issued in this country. In 1870 he made a trip to the Pacific Coast, prior to entering the service of the Pennsylvania Steel Company. In 1871, when the Logan Iron & Steel Co., of Burnham, Pa., failed, Mr. Neilson was appointed receiver, re-organized the company, became' its General Manager, and spent more than four years in this work. In the meantime, he became interested in the Freedom forge of the same place, and, with Mr. Wm. Burnham and Mr. Milton Brosius, laid the foundations for what is now the Standard Steel Works. From Jan. 1, 1877, to April 1, 1890, he was General Manager of these works, and closely associated with the Baldwin Locomotive Works. In 1878 he was in charge of the first consignment of Baldwin locomotives to Europe, which, with a picked crew of men from Baldwin's, he took to Eydtkennen, Russia, and placed in service. "A CFD model for the gas-side of an impinging jet iron bath reactor has been developed to assist in the interpretation and design of oxidizing gas-melt reaction rate experiments. Heat transfer and reaction at the surface have been included. A free surface model, which solves for the liquid motion within the bath as well as the gas motion above the bath, has also been developed. This model also predicts extent and shape of the dimple formed on the liquid surface by the impinging jet. Both models have been run for conditions typical of jet impingement experiments using CO2 , H2O and O2• The main conclusions are• Results from the model for gas-side mass transport are in good agreement with the empirical correlation of Belton and Belton (1980)• Experimentally determined rates of decarburization by CO2 should be corrected for mass transfer because the experiments are often carried out under mixed rate control, eg for gas flow rate 10 L/min when the sulphur concentration is lower than 0.045• If the rate constant for oxygen reaction is greater than about 5 mol/m2.s.atm, it cannot be determined using a gas flow rate of 10 L/min or lower because of mass transfer control.• A cavity of depth 4.5 mm is predicted for a gas flow rate of 10 L/min and this substantially changes the flow field (and hence reaction rate) compared with a simulation in which the surface is assumed to be flat."

In this Bureau of Mines study, two fluidized-bed reactors were designed, built, and operated, one as a sorber for S02 and the other as a contactor for the regeneration of the sulfur-laden alkalized alumina. The target of 90 percent removal of S02 from a flue gas stream containing 0.3 percent S02 was attained by using a sorbent feed of 10-15 grams per minute into a 5-inch bed depth of alkalized alumina. The sorption unit was operated at about 330° C. Complete regeneration of the laden alkalized alumina containing 5 to 10 percent sulfur was accomplished in approximately 1/2 hour. An excess of reformed propane at about 730° C was the regenerating gas. Attrition losses, a major problem with this sorbent, ranged from 0.9 to 7.9 percent of the inventory. Data from these tests demonstrate, within experimental error, the validity of equations developed from short-term, thin-bed tests related to sorption and regeneration rates.
