The Florida phosphate industry, which supplies about three-quarters of the domestic phosphate fertilizer, produces tremendous volumes of phosphatic clay wastes (slimes). These clays retain a high percentage of water for extended periods of time. The clays also pose an environmental hazard because the disposal technique involves aboveground storage behind earthen dams. Although much research has been undertaken by numerous organizations to dewater slime, no completely satisfactory solution has been developed. In June 1972, a cooperative effort by the Federal Bureau of Mines and the Florida phosphate mining industry was initiated to develop a solution for dewatering the Florida phosphatic slimes. This report discusses various aspects of the slimes problem, reviews past research, makes recommendations for future research, and includes a bibliography of references and patents dealing with the subject.

This paper reports measurements of low-temperature heat capacities and entropies at 298.15° K. of two copper ferrites (CUFe204 and CU0.75Fe2.2504). These substances, which occur in copper-smelting slags, have not been sujected to any previous direct thermodynamic investigation. The two copper ferrites are spinel minerals of the variate class. In previous investigations similar data were obtained for 13 other spinel minerals -7 of the normal class and 6 of the variate class. The entropies at 298.15° K. of these minerals have been compiled and revised as necessary in the light of present knowledge regarding structural randomness; entropy values, recommended for use in thermodynamic calculations, are listed.

Gold and copper are lost in flotation tailings in mineral processing of copper-zinc-pyrite ores. Large resources of precious and base metals have accumulated in tailing ponds of Russian plants. Object of the study is the sample obtained from Ural Mining and Metallurgical Company in Russia. The main constituents in flotation tailings are Au, Ag, Cu and Zn with content 1.4 g/t, 12 g/t, 0.66 and 0.5% respectively. The flotation tailings are a refractory material. Gold, as main metal, is fine encapsulated in sulfides, mainly in pyrite. Gold extraction from tailings is 34.0 and 42.7% at P42 and P90 of 0.074mm particle size respectively. In this work heap bioleaching of tailings was studied for oxidation sulfides (pyrite and chalcopyrite) with using mesofilic and moderately termofilic bacteria in acidic solutions. The tailings had low filtration property (< 0.3 m/day) and pelletization was used before bioleaching. Copper containing converter slags flotation tailings and calcium oxide were used as binding material for increasing filtration property of tailings. Copper was extracted in sulfate solution and was precipitated by cementation after cleaning of bacterial solution from iron. Copper recovery was 56.8% at content 61.4% in precipitate. The biooxidation of pyrite was 80%. Cyanidation, leaching with thiourea and heap leaching by cyanide were tested too. Gold extraction from solid bioresidues was 82, 75.3 and 77% respectively. The results of this investigation were recommended for pilot test.

1. Domestic Production and Use: In 1984, 12 companies operated 27 primary aluminum reduction plants, with 3 firms accounting for 57% of production. Washington, Oregon, and Montana accounted for 35% of the production; Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri, and Tennessee 25%; Alabama, Arkansas, Texas, South Carolina, and North Carolina 20%; other States 20%. Based on published producer prices, output of primary metal in 1984 was valued at $7.2 billion. Aluminum consumption by 25,000 firms was centered in the east-central United States. Packaging accounted for an estimated 35% of domestic consumption in 1984, transportation, 20%; building, 18%; electrical, 9%; consumer durables, 8%; and other uses, 10%.

According to reports in August, Botswana RST&apos;s copper- nickel-cobalt smelter at Selebi-Pikwe produced 7 percent above the rated capacity of about 3,500 metric tons of matte per month. This record production occurred after 2 years of plant production difficulties and was brought about by a new management team. A shutdown for furnace maintenance had been planned for this year, but was postponed because of the improvements in production and operations. However, the mining operation continued to face problems relating to higher costs and some outstanding claims. COPPER: Effective December 1, ASARCO, Inc. and Phelps Dodge Corp. reduced their domestic copper prices by 54 per pound. Within a period of 3 days, a11 other producers (Kennecott Copper Corp., Newmont Mining Corp., Cities Service Co. , Copper Range Co. , Duval Corp., and Inspiration Consolidated Copper Go. ) had either lowered or discounted their market postings by 5¢ to 65.625¢ per pound on electrolytic wirebar and 65$ on cathode plate. Between November 29 and December 3, New York merchants decreased wirebar quotations by 1.8¢-2¢ to within a range of 57.8¢-58¢ per pound. New York Commodity Exchange (COMEX) spot-contracted copper in the week was priced at 57. 1¢ on Monday, 56.7¢ on Wednesday and Thursday, and 57.4¢ on Friday, resulting in a 5-day average of 56.9¢, London Metal Exchange (LME) cash (prompt) wirebar averaged 56.3¢ last week, opening Monday at 56.6¢, falling from Tuesday?s high of 57.2¢ to Wednesday?s low of 55.6¢ and closing Friday at 56.1¢. Foreign producers, guided by LME market transactions, lowered wirebar quotes to 56¢ per pound. Copper stocks as of December 3 totaled 187,702 short tons at COMEX warehouses and 654,573 tons at LME depositories, compared to 97,413 and 537,481 tons, respectively, for the corresponding 1975 period.

IN the middle of the eighteenth century John Frazier and wife, Sarah Ingraham, removed from Boston, Mass., to Philadelphia, Pa., where he was held in such esteem that we find him one of the Committee which arranged the ball at Washington&apos;s inauguration. Their son John. Nalbro Frazier, was prosperous in his mercantile career and fortunate in his wife, .Anne West; who was an important personage in the early life of Professor Frazier. This cultured lady brought into the family an atmosphere of religious enthusiasm, of thoroughness and: of unity of purpose. Her son, Benjamin West Frazier, inherited her traits and displayed them during a. short and active life. Like his father, he engaged in mercantile pursuits, and was a member of the firm of Zimmerman, Frazier & Co. In their interests he lived for a short- time in Montevideo, and on his return married Isabella Zimmerman, a daughter of the head of the firm. Their happy married life was cut short by the death of Mrs. Frazier shortly after the birth of the subject of this sketch which, occurred October 3, 1841. Mr. Frazier did not long survive her, and left his orphaned sons to, the care of his mother, from whom he had inherited a lovable and deeply religious nature, an : artistic temperament and a capacity for thorough work. Whatever of these traits fell by inheritance to these children were strengthened by the influence of their grandmother, and. the purity of mind, the delicacy of sentiment, the refinement of honor, which characterized. Professor Frazier, are due to Anne West Frazier, and are generally present in the characters of all of gentle blood who have been under the sole and immediate influence of a mature and refined woman. The results of laboratory tests on iron precipitation from non-decopperized nickel anolyte are discussed. The parameters (pH, oxygen consumption and stirring speed) for iron precipitation from the anolyte, using the oxygen in the air, were determined. In the experiments conducted under optimized conditions, the residual concentration of iron in the anolyte after precipitation was 0.7-2.7 mg/L, and the copper and nickel losses to the solid phase were 0.05-0.07% and 0.05-0.16%, respectively. The filtration ability of the iron slurry obtained was 2 to 5 times higher as compared to that after chlorine oxidation and oxyhydrolysis. The leaching of the non-ferrous metals from the iron cake made using the separate nickel anolyte purification process was possible by dissolution in sulphuric acid. It was established that after cobalt precipitation from the copper- and iron-depleted anolyte, the precipitates obtained had lower ratios of Fe:Co and Ni:Co.

Develop a mobile manipulator that one person can use to lift and maneuver 50- to 600-pound loads. It can be used in maintenance shops and mines to reduce lifting accidents (Figure 1 and 2). Background Lifting heavy items is one of the leading causes of injury in the workplace. Mine Safety and Health Administration statistics showed that, in 2004, back injuries accounted for over 20% of all injuries (1,699 cases) and resulted in 110,000 lost days of work. Forty-one percent of those injuries resulted from materials-handling or maintenance activities.1 In addition to back injuries, lifting injuries include hernias, ruptures, sprains, and strains resulting from losing control of the item being lifted. Factors associated with accidents are weight of the item being lifted, awkward postures, inadequate handholds, and the working environment itself. High accident rates were noted when lifting items that ranged from 50 to 600 pounds, particularly in tight working quarters where maneuverability was critical. Research indicated that a mobile lifting arm would eliminate many lifting accidents in environments where other lifting devices (fork lifts, overhead cranes, mobile A-frames) would not be practical. NIOSH has built a first-generation mobile manipulator unit designed to be used on hard, level floors such as in a shop. The complexity of motion, number of moving parts, compact design, and design constraints of the manipulator required advanced computer-aided design work (Figure 3). As a result of the design work, thirty-eight claims are included in the patent applications. NIOSH will be conducting field trails and working with manufacturers to put the manipulator into industrial use.

Durant les années 1955 à 1961, plusieurs campagnes d?exploration ont été menées sur la zone Bond dans la partie sud-ouest de l?anneau nord de la carbonatite d?Oka (propriété de Niocan, figure 1). Les zones minéralisées HWM1 et HWM2 sont découvertes à l?ouest de la propriété. Un des forages, le S-60, avait intercepté 80 mètres de minéralisation à 0.71% Nb2O5 à l?est des zones HWM1 et HWM2 mais aucun autres travaux d?exploration n?avaient été réalisés sur cette interception minéralisée. En 1995, Niocan réalise une campagne de forage pour mieux définir la zone minéralisée recoupée par le forage S-60. En 1997, une seconde campagne de forage détermine un tonnage de 14.37 Mt avec une teneur de 0.66 % Nb2O5 pour la zone S-60 (Marcotte et Gagnon, 1997). Le complexe carbonatitique d&apos;Oka se situe à environ 35 km à l?ouest de Montréal sur la rive nord du lac des Deux-Montagnes. Sa formation remonte au Crétacé précoce (entre 117 à 123 Ma). La carbonatite d?Oka fait partie de la suite d&apos;intrusions alcalines que constituent les collines Montérégiennes. Le complexe a une forme allongée (7.2 km par 2.4 km) orientée NO-SE (figure 1). Il est intrusif dans des roches précambriennes constituées d?anorthosites au nord et de gneiss charnokitique au sud (Gold, 1963) appartenant à la Formation de la colline d?Oka. Les gneiss au contact du complexe sont fénitisés sur une épaisseur qui peut atteindre jusqu?à 60 mètres. Les roches carbonatitiques forment la série dominante du complexe et elles sont composées principalement de calcite (> 50 %) à gros grain et parfois rubanées. Les minéraux accessoires les plus communs sont la biotite, le pyroxène, la monticellite, la magnétite, l?apatite, la forstérite, la mélilite, le pyrochlore, la pérovskite, la niocalite, la pyrite et la pyrrhotite (Gold, 1963).

Leaching in froth is a particular case of a three phase (liquid-solid-gaseous) process which combines flotation with leaching by using a reactive gaseous reagent as a flotation carrier and a leaching solution as the reactive liquid medium to fonn the foam (froth) in&apos; which the solid particles are suspended. Some physico-chemical and engineering aspects of leaching in froth are discussed and illustrated by its application for cleaning the mineral graphite. Leaching of the graphite concentrate containing 4L4% of the elemental carbon and 3.16% of the sulphidic &apos;sulphur was canied out in the froth fonned by: (a) a concentrated chloride solution, with a small addition of nitric acid, in the foam state; (b) a mixture of gaseous O2, NO., and H20 encapsulated in the foam; and (c) notable particles of graphite suspended in the foam. The laboratory experiments werecanied out in a "flotation column"-type reactor ala temperature from 80 to !08°C and under total pressure of 100 to 200kPa. In the 3-stage leaching-flotation process, the non-flotable fraction of particles was separated three times from the notable fraction. The concentration of carbon and elemental sulphur in the final flotable fraction was 96% C and 0.38% S respectively. The expected advantages and possible application in hydrometallurgy are suggested.

SUMMARY Three gradients have been identified in regard to the average horizontal ground stress increase with depth. [S (0-900 m) = 9.86 MPa + 0.0371 MPa/m SHa (900-2200 m) = 33.41 MPa + 0.0111 MPa/m SHae (extreme)= 12.36 MPa + 0.0586 MPa/m] The extreme stress values are not caused by mining geometry and are of limited extent only. In some cases geological disturbances like faults and rock type boundaries suggest an explanation but in other cases the unusually high stresses cannot be explained readily. It is interesting to note that in the same locations the vertical stress components are very much higher than those derived from overburden weight and that the vertical stress gradient is similar to the gradient obtained from the extreme horizontal stress components. INTRODUCTION Ground stress determinations have been carried out in mines in Ontario and Manitoba, Canada, over more than a decade (Herget, 1980). Most of the sites are located in the Superior and Southern Tectonic Province of the Canadian Shield, which consist of Archaen and Proterozoic rocks comprising volcanics, metamorphosed sediments and granites. The youngest orogenic deformation occurred during the Grenville Orogeny (955 million years ago).

The mechanical properties of three polycrystalline intermediale Phases that have the y bvass structure were measured in compression between 400° and 900°K. At the lower testing temperatures— termed Region I— no plaslic deformalion occurred prior to brittle fracture. A1 higher temperatuves— lermed Region III—the three phases deformted plaslically for all strain rules from 1.5 to 36.0 x 10-4 sec-1. The homologous temperature for the inilialion of plaslic flow increased in the same order as tile atomic size difference between atoms in each plmse (0.50Tmp for y AgZn, 0.62Tmp for y CuZn, and 0.76 Tmp for y CuCd). The increased flow resistance oj. y CuCd above 0.50Tmp is explaitzed in terms of the more random arrangement of copper and cadmiwn atoms on the laltice sites of&apos; the y bvass slrilctlire. Plaslic deformation of the three intevmiediate phases in the smooth plaslic flow region appears to be controlled by oacancy-induced dislocation climb. RESULTS are reported in this paper on the mechanical properties of three binary intermediate phases having the complex cubic y brass structure (D82, 143m) containing fifty-two atoms in the unit cell. The structure of the prototype y brass phase, y CuZn, was first analyzed by Bradley and Thewlis&apos; based on the X-ray work of Westgren and Phragmen.2 The y brass structure can be visualized as an arrangement of twenty-seven body centered cubes (3 by 3 by 3) into a unit cell containing fifty-four atoms. From this cell the center atom and the four corner atoms are removed and the remaining fifty-two atoms are slightly displaced, resulting in the y brass structure. Approximately thirty-five binary intermediate phases that have an electron to atom ratio of 21:13 have been reported to form the y brass structure. The three y brass intermediate phases selected for this study are formed from elements in groups IB and IIB of the first and second long period. Each compound exists over a composition range that includes the stoi-chiometric composition A5BB (Cu5Zn8, Ag5Zn8, Cu5Cd8). y CuZn (a0 = 9.944A) has solubility limits extending from 57 to 67 at. pct Zn at 500°C apd melts peritecti-cally at 834°C; y AgZn (a0 = 9.326A) has a solubility range from 58 to 63 at. pct Za and melts peritectically at 661°C. y CuCd (a, = 9.596A) melts congruently at 563°C and has a maximum range of solubility extending from 58 to 64 at. pct Cd. In order to minimize coring and microporosity during solidification, the composi- tion of the compounds that form peritectically (y CuZn and y AgZn) was chosen so that the temperature difference between the liquidus and the solidus is only a few degrees centigrade. In selecting y brass compounds for this study, phases were avoided that contained a transition element or that had an electron to atom ratio greater than 1.70. Hume-Rothery et a1.3 has observed that, when the electron to atom ratio of y brass intermediate phases exceeds 1.70, atoms begin to drop out of the unit cell to maintain a constant electron to unit cell ratio. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Each of the three intermediate phases was prepared from elements having a purity >99.999 pct. Only trace quantities of impurities (<0.0001 pct) were detected by spectrographic analysis of the four elements. A master alloy of each compound weighing approximately 130 g was prepared by melting the elements in evacuated sealed quartz tubes heated in an electric furnace. Specimens having the desired diameter for the mechanical property measurements were obtained by remelting the master alloy in a Vycor tube under argon and drawing specimens from the melt into 4-mm-diam quartz tubes. To obtain a smooth surface on specimens drawn from the melt, the inside of the quartz tube was coated with a thin layer of graphite formed by thermally decompositing acetone. All specimens were imbedded in sealing wax and cut to the proper length with a diamond-impregnated cut-off wheel. The individual specimens (4 mm diam by 8 mm long) were then sealed in evacuated Pyrex tubes and homogenized at 500°C for 72 hr. Chemical composition, variations over the length of the rod (10 cm long) were generally less than 0.2 pct and the analyzed composition differed from the desired composition by less than 0.5 pct.4 Metallographic evaluation of the specimens after homogenization showed no evidence of a second phase in any of the compounds. The average grain size of the specimens after homogenization was 1 to 2 mm. All mechanical property measurements were carried out in an argon atmosphere using a compression apparatus described previously.5 Prior to applying the load to the specimen, the test apparatus was evacuated, back-filled with argon, and heated to the test temperature for 20 min to establish thermal equilibrium. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS Mechanical properties measured as a function of temperature and strain rate for each of the three y brass phases were similar. From room temperature to the ductile-to-brittle transition temperature, only elastic deformation was observed prior to fracture.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Ertsberg mining district is a 100 km2 area in the highlands of Papua, Indonesia. The district hosts mineralised and barren, outcropping and hidden porphyry and equigranular intrusions. There are at least six major (100+ m wide) porphyry intrusions identified from surface and underground mapping and drill cores. These are the Grasberg Igneous Complex (GIC), Karume porphyry, Lembah Tembaga porphyry, Ertsberg Stockwork Zone porphyry, Kay intrusion and the Wanagon intrusion. Recent deep drilling adjacent to the GIC identified a new hidden porphyry at depth, the Gajah Tidur (Sleeping Elephant), which extends south-west beneath the Kucing Liar skarn. Other named small porphyry dykes and plugs in the district include the West Grasberg, North Grasberg, Idenberg, South East and Zaagkam intrusions. The largest equigranular intrusion is the multiphase Ertsberg diorite.Igneous activities occurred in a relatively short span (&lt;1 million years) from about 3.4 Ma to 2.7 Ma ago, based on U-Pb zircon dating. The various intrusions in the district related to ore mineralisation are high K and appear to have been derived from the same parental chamber, based on similar whole rock rare earth element patterns. Radiogenic Nd- and Sr-isotopic variations indicate that there were multiple recharge events into the parental chamber.The larger intrusions and all economic mineralisation occur in a 4 km wide zone that parallels the N60W-trending axis of the Yellow Valley Syncline (YVS), one of the large folds generated during collisional tectonism. Intrusion pathways at ~3 Ma were localised into dilatational areas in a late and/or post-collisional NW-trending, left-lateral strike-slip zone with Riedel shear offsets between the major fault zones. This report describes the performance of Phase I of a project to design, analyze, and demonstrate a multilift longwall mining method applicable to mining coal seams twelve (12) feet or more in thickness. A non-simultaneous multilift operation is the most viable thick seam mining technique for introduction to the United States coal industry. In the case of the proposed site at Emery, Utah it will result in an increase in coal extraction from 30% with present methods to at least 50% and possibly more. The major technological advance involved in this project is mining a lower lift under a previously mined upper lift. To accomplish this, entries must be developed and maintained beneath the upper lift gob. This will necessitate the use of steel supports at frequent intervals throughout the lower lift&apos; entry system. This has not been done in the U.S. to date. An economic analysis of the project indicates that, while this method will result in a higher than average cost per ton for coal mined, the coal would be competitive with current-operation in the area.

An analysis of three 1-1/4-diam manufactured wire ropes of 6x19 classification was done to identify and describe reference conditions of new rope. Reference condition is of value when examining tested or retired ropes. Measurements of strand and rope pitch and of wire and rope diameter confirmed adherence of all ropes to those construction specifications. Mechanical properties of strength and ductility were determined by accepted methods for the ropes and wires from the ropes. Individual wires from one rope failed to meet minimum wire ductility values. Wire chemical composition varied in average carbon levels, from 0.70 to 0.78 wt pct, and in manganese content, from 0.45 to 0.80 wt pct. One manufacturer&apos;s product contained 1 to 3 wt pct Ni and Cr. Heavily wrought pearlitic steel microstructures were porous and contained inclusions. Cold work variations were evidenced by wrought grain width. Recorded anomalies reflected the condition of the manu-factured products. The report provides data that compare the three wire ropes studied, but cannot verify the effects that these conditions or anomalies have on rope service life.
