REAM is a unique and promising method of rock breaking using high energy, inert projectiles to impart mechanical energy to the rock. This paper describes a demonstration of the application of this new technology to two specific problems in open pit mining: secondary breakage and the scaling of loose material from pit walls. Under previous government contracts, Physics International Company developed the projectile impact method for a large variety of commercial and military rock excavation tasks. A 4 meter (13 foot) diameter by 16.8 meters (55 foot) long tunnel was driven at the Hope Valley Mine in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California in 1972 and 1973. An average of 1100 kg (1 ¼ tons) of a 172 MN/m2 (25,000-psi) granodiorite formation was broken by each of 590 shots used to drive the tunnel.l Based on these results it is estimated that REAM can drive over 60 meters (200 feet) of tunnel per day at about 88 percent of the cost of drilling and blasting. In addition, repeated axial impact by high energy projectiles was used to drill a 0.4 meter (16 inch) diameter horizontal hole in the same granodiorite formation. Each shot advanced the hole an average of 0.2 meter (8 inches).

This paper outlines a simple methodology for mineral characterization, developed as part of the Australian Mineral Industry Research Association (AMIRA) managed research project P777 ?The Development of Heavy Suspension Techniques for High Density Separations (Replacement of Clerici?s Solution)?. The project was sponsored by De Beers, Rio Tinto and Iluka Resources. Heavy mineral characterization of samples arising from exploration, mining or metallurgical processes is frequently conducted using laboratory heavy liquid analysis. Unfortunately, there are only a limited number of high density (?heavy?) liquids and these tend to be more toxic as their density increases. Low-toxicity inorganic solutions, based on tungsten compounds, have been developed that can be utilized at relative densities (RD) up to 3.0. Beyond this value organic liquids can be used; however, this presents significant health and safety hazards. Diiodomethane (methylene iodide) having a relative density of 3.31 is commonly used. Mixtures of thallium formate and thallium malonate were found in the early 1900s by Clerici to provide liquids having specific gravities between 4.0 and 5.0. For the characterization of the heavy components of mineral sand deposits (e.g. anatase RD 3.9, rutile RD 4.2, ilmenite RD 4.4?4.7 and zircon RD4.6?4.8) there is currently no heavy liquid alternative to Clerici?s solution. Clerici?s solution is highly toxic and testing is now conducted by few laboratories worldwide, with costs reflecting the chemical costs, infrastructure costs and health and safety regimes (e.g. blood testing of exposed staff). A simple laboratory technique of density fractionation has been developed, employing suspensions of fine tungsten carbide particles in lithium heteropolytungstates solutions, that can replace Clerici?s solution in the evaluation of fine mineral sands samples (e.g. -250 +150microns). The developing methodology that can achieve low-cost, low-toxic separations at relative densities above 4.0 is outlined and the comparison of results with Clerici?s solution presented. In addition, preliminary work on density fractionation of zircon samples is presented. Zircon fractionation relates to their inclusion, radionuclide content and metamictization.

Mine exploitation is a broad subject whose focus is the technical skills or efforts needed for the extraction of mineral from a known ore body. Mine exploitation can be considered the very core of the mining engineering discipline. It begins at the conclusion of the exploration and development stages of mining and ends when the ore body is exhausted and the mine (or mines)closes and is reclaimed. Section 8 on mine exploitation is comprised of seven chapters: (1) classification of mining methods, (2) mine surveying and mapping, 3) systems engineering, (4) computer methods, (5) labor relations and training, (6) management and administration, and (7) mine closure, sealing, and abandonment. Each chapter focuses its efforts towards providing detailed and useful information for the engineer on basic mine exploitation principles. The information can be applied to a broad range of mining problems without regard to mineral type or mining method.

A number of articles have been published, notably those by R. S. Handy, R. T. Hancock and A. P. Watt in Engineering and Mining Journal, dealing with the calculations involved in ore dressing. These publications demonstrate both the importance of the subject and the lack of success in developing a generally recognized method for comparing enrichment effects. Considering that we may wish to compare enrichment results on similar or dissimilar ores, that we may desire to make the comparison on the basis of either the absolute or the economical efficiency, and that the number of factors upon which the result depends is large, the question arises whether it is possible to set up a positive method for such calculations. In the following pages it is our aim to show that a sure, complete and successful way to overcome existing difficulties has been found. All samples were obtained and analyzed as part of U.S. Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free market economies. This survey has been conducted since 1917. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and chromatograph.

Past issues of Minerals and Materials have discussed such aspects of the economy as consumption and investment expenditures, interest rates, productivity, and international trade barriers and their effect on the minerals industry here and abroad. In this issue, we will (l) look at recent indications of a possible economic recovery, (2) present 1983 expectations reflecting the results of industry surveys conducted by the U.S. Department of Commerce (DOC), and (3) briefly discuss the contribution of the U.S. mining industry to total gross national product (GNP). THE RECOVERY Throughout most of 1982, DOC's Composite Index of Leading Indicators provided evidence of impending improvement in the economy. The index increased moderately during eight of the months in 1982 and then jumped an estimated 3.6 percent in January 1983 (table 1). While the leading indicators continued to predict improvement, the general economy, as measured by the Index of Industrial Production, continued its slide through November 1982 (table 2). Finally total industrial production increased in December 1982 and continued on an upward path in January and February, as predicted by the leading indicators.

TD-Nickel has been broken in tension and in fatigue at voom temperature. Rod specimens failed in tension by necking, with axial cracks attributed to voids elongated in the extrusion direction. Fatigue specimens failed in shear. Thin-film electron microscopy showed that the subgrain structure of TD-Nickel was very stable, and that particle-matrix detachment was very difficult, in tension and fatigue. TD-Nickel softened slightly during fatigue but had a high fatigue ratio (0.5at 10' cycles). Fractography suggested that Stage I fatigue crack propagation is greatly extended in TD-Nickel. Td-NICKEL* is a dispersion of 2 pct by volume of thoria (ThO2) in nickel, produced by powder-metallurgical methods including compaction, sintering, and extrusion. The spherical thoria particles, which may have a mean diameter of a few hundred angstroms, are dispersed with a mean planar spacing of a few thousand angstroms. By a combination of cold working and annealing, a subgrain or cell structure of dislocations intimately associated with the dispersion can be produced.' This gives the material useful tensile properties which are extremely resistant to exposure to high temperatures.'-= At the same time, the material shows considerable ductility.3'4 At the beginning of the present work, it was considered of great interest to investigate the mechanical stability of TD-Nickel under conditions of fatigue. On the one hand, materials which derive strength from a cold-worked structure are unstable in that they are susceptible to fatigue softening: in addition, the presence of discontinuities such as the particle-matrix interfaces might be expected to assist in the initiation and propagation of fatigue cracks, in that they may provide local concentrations of internal stress and sites for the initiation of voids." On the other hand, the substantial ductility of TD-Nickel suggests that if it obeys Coffin's relation8 (or the more refined form proposed by Manson9) it should have good fatigue resistance. The initial purpose of this investigation was to assess the importance of these factors. Also, relatively little fundamental work has been done on the mechanism of fatigue in dispersion-strengthened materials. Work on overaged A1-4 pct CU10-12 revealed a very large Bauschinger effect indicative of internal stresses at the particles, and very great fatigue hardening1' presumably due to the multiple slip stimulated by these internal stresses, followed by softening which was initially due to softening in the matrix, but later might have arisen from cracking at the particle-matrix interfaces. The study of overaged Al-4 pct Cu could not settle this latter point by the electron microscopy of thin films, since the dispersion is too coarse. A previous study of the fatigue of internally oxidized copper13 was complicated by inter granular failure, attributed to oxide particles at grain bouhdaries; internal oxidation of single crystals, however, improved their fatigue properties.'3 Investigations of SAP (sintered aluminum powder) are complicated by the complex particle shapes, and the possibility of continuous internal oxide films.14 It was hoped to avoid these difficulties with TD-Nickel, which had the further advantages that it was commercially available and suitable for study by the thin-film technique. 1) MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE TD-Nickel was purchased from the Driver-Harris Co. as 3/9-in.-diam rod which had been extruded, swaged, and "stress-relieved" (normally at 1010°C for 1 hr). Continuous-radius fatigue specimens with a minimum diameter of -0.1 in. were ground to shape and electropolished in 40 pct phosphoric, 35 pct sul-furic, 25 pct water at 25oC, with a stainless-steel cathode, at -6 v. Fatigue tests were carried out at room temperature with a Sonntag SF-1-U machine operating in push-pull at 1800 cycles per min, and in an Instron TT-C-L modified for reversed stressing at 26 cycles per min as described elsewhere.10 Round tensile specimens were ground with 0.85-in. gage lengths of 0.135 in, diam, electropolished, and tested in a Tinius Olsen hydraulic machine. The surfaces of fatigue specimens were examined with a Reichert metallograph. Discs for electron microscopy with a Siemens Elmiskop I were spark-cut 0.01 in. thick with a modified Servomet 11 employing a tool of moving molybdenum wire, cleaned in 50 pct acetic, 30 pct nitric, 10 pct phosphoric, and 10pctsul-furic at 85oC, and thinned by the window method in the electropolishing solution at -20°C and -6 v. Two-stage replicas (parlodion, then Pt-50 pct C self-shadowed at 40 deg) were taken from fatigue fracture surfaces for electron microscopy. Plane sections parallel to the specimen axis and containing the direction of fatigue crack propagation were polished, etched with Carapella's reagent, and examined optically. Transmission Laue X-ray photographs of as-received material electropolished to a point were used to determine preferred orientation. 2) RESULTS 2.1) The Structure of As-Received Material. The Lake Creek gas-condensate field, Montgomery County, Tex., Was discovered early in 1941 by the Superior Oil Co. The field, shown in figure 1, is approximately 37 miles northwest of Houston, Tex., about 11 miles north of the Tomball, and 10 miles west of the Conroe oil fields. The field is on the downthrown side of a pronounced fault zone, and the general structure is anticlinal, with the long axis trending northeast and southwest. Production is obtained from multiple sandstone reservoirs in the Wilcox group of Eocene age between the approximate depths of 8,820 and 11,840 feet below the surface of the ground.

There is an underlying surge to mining in the Philippines." So said A. R. "Ham" Reed, general manager Itogon-Suyoc Mines, Inc., to this reporter last November. Itogon-Suyoc is a small company with a struggling gold mine, a mixed sulfide mine and some prospects. In the Republic of Philippines (ROP), politics, which have an effect on mining, create some uncertainties. By July 1974, no mining company may have more than 40% foreign ownership. The ownership provision is a matter of concern to such important companies as Atlas and Benguet Consolidated and is generally considered a deterrent to new foreign investment. Under these circumstances, Reed's comments are of interest. On foreign prospectors: Don't come in cold; find a Philippine partner or buy into a company already here. Physical conditions of exploration are tough-terrain, communications -but the mineral potential is excellent.

We studied yttrium extraction from untreated zircon sand processing waste tailings. Xenotime mineral as the rare earth element source with an abundance of yttrium (REY) was detected in sufficient grade for extraction. As much as 9.03% yttrium exists in zircon tailings (analysed by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry). The presence of yttrium was confirmed by X-ray diffractometry in xenotime minerals, which are yttrium carriers (Y-PO4). The purpose of this research was to determine the effect of leaching conditions on yttrium recovery from zircon sand after alkaline fusion treatment. Alkaline fusion was chosen to decompose phosphate into hydroxide in the xenotimemineral,which will reduce further required hydrometallurgical processing.Alkaline fusionwas carried out for 3 h at 450 °C, with a ratio of sodium hydroxide to zircon tailings sand of ~ 1:1. The alkaline fusion product was leached with water, followed by hydrochloric acid treatment to leach the yttrium. Yttrium recovery reached 87% under optimum conditions (60 °C, 1MHCl, and solid-to-liquid ratio = 1/10 for 7.5 min). A suitable model for yttrium dissolution with hydrochloric acid was diffusion through a solid particle ash layer. The calculated activation energy (EA) for this model was 20.21 kJ/mol.

This circular presents part I of a review of the literature on effects of breathing dusts, with special reference to silicosis, largely in the minim; and allied industries. The literature on this subject is so extensive that no attempt has been made to include all published material but only to assemble some of the more outstanding data on several aspects of the subject. Parts II and III will deal with prevention and treatment of dust diseases and some of the economic and legal aspects of dust diseases in industry, with special reference to mining. Dust diseases arc much before the public at present, and there is good reason to believe that the information on the subject available to the layman is extremely meager; even those rated as experts usually have a more or less theoretical conception of the diseases, their causation, remedies, and prevention, rather than actual experience with them. Until recently little attention has been given to prevention, and the usual attitude of the engineer, upon whom the main reliance for prevention ultimately must devolve, has been to let "sleeping dogs lie" or, more definitely, to "let well enough alone." However, the "laissez faire" attitude no longer is tenable, and in the past few years numerous conditions have caused those engaged in industry, including mining, to bring the subject before the public with a view to ascertaining the facts upon which to formulate remedial measures, primarily preventive.

PURE silver and silver-lead alloys have been studied as to their suitability for bearings.1-8 A review of the properties of thallium and the silver-thallium constitutional diagram was made by the author to analyze the possibilities of silver-thallium compositions for antifriction materials.† The silver-rich end of the diagram as reported in the literature9-11 was found to be sketchy and it was necessary to carry out considerable experimental work to arrive at definite conclusions. Some of the results of this work are reported in this paper. TEST MATERIALS In the beginning of the work, only fused alloys were investigated. Later, research [TABLE I. In preparing the fused alloys, care was taken to exhaust the toxic fumes caused by the thallium content. The compositions of the series of fused alloys are listed in Table I. The silver-thallium alloys were melted in clay-graphite crucibles and cast into preheated steel molds of 3/4-in. diameter. In the cast condition, they showed a cored structure, as indicated by the micrographs of Figs. I to 3. The etching reagent used was a mixture of 2 grams K2Cr2O7, 8 c.c. H2SO4, and 100 c.c. H2O. The cored structure is unsatisfactory for the type of corrosion resistance required for bearing applications, and homogenizing experiments were carried out at various temperatures, the results of which are shown in Figs. 4 through 8. The alloys with a lower thallium concentration, which were heated for 2 hr. at 525°C. show an almost completely homogenized solid solution type of structure. With higher thallium concentration, the homogenizing temperature was dropped to 475°C. to eliminate the formation of a liquid phase. It is evident that heating for 2 hr. at this temperature did not result in complete elimination of the cored structure. As would be expected, cold-working of the cast structure is an expedient in establishing equilibrium conditions. The fine homogeneous grain structure shown in Fig. 7 corresponds to the cold-worked area under the Rockwell ball penetration when the hardness was taken before heat-treatment. "Indonesia is one of the world leaders in palm oil production. Palm oil industry is an industry to be considered when it comes to environmental impacts. This paper utilizes three step approaches. First, a material flow analysis of palm oil related industry was conducted in Indonesia. Second, a factory visit survey was conducted for getting information on environmental impacts of plantation and CPO mills. Third, a LCA study was made for a model Indonesian CPO mill in several bio-waste treatment options. Main findings were that, first; over 70% of FFB was bio-wastes generated from CPO mills. Second, some mills introduced a zero emission bio-waste policy. However, untreated bio-wastes in the zero emission policy, such as, CH4 from POME ponds, may have potential to reduce more impacts on the environment. Introduction Indonesia is one of the world leaders in palm oil production with approximately 12.4 million tons of crude palm oil (CPO) production in 2005 and with the plantation area 5.6 million ha spreading out in 19 provinces [10]. The expansion of palm oil cultivation in Indonesia and its export oriented industry heavily relies on the strong world market demand for food. Currently, there are 320 CPO industries in Indonesia [10]. These include plantations and palm oil related factories. Among them, there are six biggest players in CPO business in Indonesia: PT. Perkebunan Nusantara (PTPN) consisting of 9 PTPN, Sinar Mas, Raja Garuda Mas, Astra Agro Lestari, Minamas Plantation and Indofood. They are managing more than 50% of plantation estate in Indonesia and are leading the Indonesian palm oil business.Palm oil industry is an industry to be considered when it comes to environmental impacts. Unfortunately, there is not so much available information related to the performance of each CPO on environmental impacts. There are reports which provide information on environmental impacts of CPO mills in South East Asian countries, but are limited to, for instance, Thailand’s cases [4 and 5] and Malaysia’s cases [1, 3, 6, 7, 9, 11 and 12]. On the other hand, similar studies on the Indonesian’s case are not well established in academic literatures. And also there is limitation on Indonesian palm oil industrial information from plantation to consumption and disposal in academic articles. There is no literature related to material flow analysis focusing on the whole Indonesian palm oil related industry. One way to describe and present the environmental impacts is through a life cycle assessment (LCA). The LCA could be used to estimate the impacts of CPO production including the stages of plantation, transportation and milling [5, 8 and 11]. However, studies on Indonesian CPO production process were not well established in academic articles. The purpose of this paper is thus to clarify environmental impacts of palm oil industry in Indonesia especially by focusing on plantation and CPO mills with consideration to various bio-waste treatments."

Persons interested in th_e study of petroleum and allied substances have long felt the need of a bibliographic index to the literature. This bibliography, which is intended to be the first elf a yearly series, has been compiled by the petroleum division of the Bureau of Mines with a view to satisfying this need. The references include only the more noteworthy writings that appeared during the year 191.5 in both ·the United States and foreign countries. Only patents plainly applicable to the industries in point have been included, although, of course, a close scrutiny of the great volume of patent literature might reveal many other patents of possible value. The references are arranged according to the subject classification on pages 3 to 11. This classification, which is to be followed in the succeeding bibliographies of this series, is offered as a guide for further study and classification of the pertinent literature.

The objectives of the Continuous Shaft Lining (CSL) System are to reduce the costs, safety hazards, and time currently required in lining mine shafts with concrete. The CSL will line machine bored shafts downward from the shaft collar on a continuous basis using an inverted, pressurized slipforming technique. The technique for slip-forming downwards has been demonstrated and refined under this program. The approach taken involved laboratory scale testing of key features of the CSL concept. These feature tests included concrete distribution, concrete sealing, concrete slipforming and development of a reliable concrete mix. Based on these results, a full scale above-ground test facility and CSL were designed and fabricated. The objectives of these tests were to demonstrate the viability of the basic concept; to establish operating limits; and to provide input data and information for the design of a second generation shaft lining system. The results of the program have led to a CSL design and operational philosophy which will need to be tested in an underground environment before industry will accept the technology. However, the next generation CSL promises to meet all the original program technical objectives.

The National Safety Competition conducted by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, is held each year for the purpose of promoting safety in the mineral industries of the United States. Since the program was inaugurated in 1925, twenty-three safety competitions have been held. This publication is a report of the results of the contests held in 1944, 1945, 1946, and 1947. The names of plants that have been awarded "Sentinels of Safety" trophies and Certificates of Achievement in Safety dur- ing these years, together with a summary of their achievements in injury prevention, are listed. Statistical data covering the injury experience of all plants entered in the annual contests also are included in this publi- cation. The injury statistics of these plants, arranged in the six groups of the competition, are the only data on injury severity at mineral operations available to the Bureau of Mines. Interest in the National Safety Competition has increased steadily. The number of participating plants has increased from 210 in 1925, the first year of the competition, to the record number of 494 in 1946. The widening scope of the competition means that a steadily increasing number of the mines and quarries in the United States are participating in a program that will supplement their other activities in promoting safety. Safety competitions have long been recognized as instrumental in stimulating and holding the interest of employees and officials in accident-prevention work. During the years covered by this report, conditions in the mineral industries of the United States were hardly conducive to setting records in accident prevention. During the war years, handicaps were especially severe- loss of skilled employees to the armed forces or to higher-wage war industries, greater production by a smaller force of workers, relatively high rates of labor turn-over, the longer workday in effect through 1944 and 1945, and difficulties in obtaining repairs and replacement for badly worn machinery. Even the immediate postwar period has brought no abatement of the tremendous pressure upon the mineral industries for greater production. Although there was a decrease of 18 in 1947 from the record enrollment in 1946, these oper- ations worked 160,525,025 man-hours, the greatest number of man-hours of exposure to mining hazards in any year of the contest except 1942. Despite the accelerated pace at which the mineral industry worked during the 4 years covered by this report, participants in the National Safety Competition have achieved creditable performances in the promotion of safety. In fact, the injury-severity rate in the enrolled plants in the 1947 contest was 7.315 days for each thousand man-hours worked, the lowest by far in the history of the National Safety Competition. The injury-frequency rate of 42.155 for each million man-hours of exposure to mine hazards in 1947 marks a favorable trend downward from the rate of 50.577 in 1946, which was the

"In this study, the recycling conditions of waste liquor obtained after the production of tungsten boride powder from calcium tungstate by self-propagating high temperature synthesis (SHS) and the following hydrochloric acid leaching were investigated in detail. Environmentally unfriendly and extremely acidic (pH~ -0.3) liquor consisting of calcium, magnesium, and boron ions was treated with 1 M sodium carbonate solution to precipitate magnesium carbonate and calcium carbonate phases. The obtained amorphous precipitates were heated up to the temperature of 400°C for re-crystallization. As a result, MgO, CaC03 and CaMg(C03)z phases were obtained, while sodium, boron, chlorine ions were remain in the solution. The present study is still in progress.IntroductionSelf-propagating high temperature synthesis (SHS) is one of the techniques used in the production of a variety of advanced ceramics, inter-metallic, organic and inorganic compounds, oxygen free single crystals, and polymers [ 1, 2]. The reaction becomes selfsustaining and propagates in the reactant mixture, after initiation in SHS process. SHS products may contain the mixture of several unwanted compounds and elements. Therefore following acidic leaching process may be needed to purify the target product. In the previous study, calcium tungstate (Ca W04), magnesium (Mg) and boric acid (B20 3) mixture were reacted to produce tungsten boride powder by SHS process according to the Reaction 1. Then, magnesium and calcium containing byproducts (i.e. MgO, Mg3B206 and Ca3B206) found in the SHS product were leached out by using concentrated hydrochloric acid (HCl) solution to obtain pure tungsten boride powder [3].Ca W04 + 0.5B203 + 4.5Mg = WB + 4.5Mg0 + Cao (1)After the leaching, filtrate solution consisting of different amounts of magnesium, calcium, and boron requires additional treatment for the environmentally acceptable disposal.Several works were carried out about magnesium precipitation conditions and kinetics from brines. Rabadzhieva et al. investigated the precipitation of Mg(OH)z from brines by using NaOH as well as caustic soda [ 4]. Turek ve Gnot investigated the precipitation efficiency of Mg(OH)z for the temperature range between 10-40°C, while the reaction was kinetically experimented by Alamdiri et al [5, 6]. Homogeneous precipitation of nesquehonite (MgC03.3H20) by the reaction of MgCli with (NH4)2C03 in supersaturated solutions and factors that influence the precipitation of MgC03.3H20, such as reaction temperature, initial concentration, stirring speed, titration speed, equilibration time, have been studied by Wang et al [7]. The precipitation of Mg(OH)z by calcium hydroxide from aqueous solutions was studied by Baird et al. [8]. In order to improve the cutting blasting effect of dimension stone mining, the water coupling directional cutting blasting technology was put forward. Based on the test apparatus and special charge configuration, the mechanism of directional cutting blasting was analysed. Directional device changes the initial equilibrium of the total energy of shock wave effect on blasthole wall. The initial directional crack first appears in the blasthole wall that makes contact with the directional device. Then, two cracks are connected along the direction of the blasthole centre line under the action of detonation pressure and water wedge. The plexiglass tests showed that water coupling directional cutting blasting technology produced cracks along with the predetermined direction completely.
