"INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARYThe tungsten properties of Lincoln Mines, Inc., and North Tem Flute Mining and Development Co. were first explored by the Bureau of Mines in 1942. Work on the project comprised trenching, sampling, a small amount of road and trail construction, and a small amount of core drilling. From April 13 to December 10, 1944, additional diamond drilling was done by the Bureau of Mines to test the lateral and downward extensions of the various tactite zones along the contact south of the Lincoln mine, including the property of the North Tem Piute Mining & Development Co.Claims leased by the Lincoln Mines, Inc., are in secs. 25 and 36, T. 3 S., R. 56 E.; secs. 30 and 31, T. 3 S., R. 57 E.: and sec. 1, T. 4 S., R 56 E., M. Jones, Pittsburgh, Pa. : The question that naturally occlun to me is this: Has Dr. Dudley in his inveatigtrtions been aiming to prove a theory, or has he been guided by an earnest desire to discover what are the proper elements in the composition of a good-wearing steel rail ? Unfortunately, for correct chemical information, he has omitted in his analgw two very importnat elements,—sulpbur and copper. Now, before we will even begin to admit the correctnets of Dr. Dudley's conclusions and the formula he prescribes, we will at the start question the propriety of any chenlist or scientist prescribing a formula for making steel when he has iguared such important ele ments as sulphur aud copper. I, for one, will not accept any such formula. Are we sure, or is Dr. Daclley sure, that the chemical analyseq embodied in his paper are correct? This may seem a presumptuous queetion, yet, with my experience with chenlists, I naturally doubt the correctness of the analyse8, and, before I will accept them as correct, I will ask that comparative tests of phosphorous and man ganese be made by the Pennsylvania Railroad chemists and the chemists of the leading steel-works in the country. Let us first verify the correctness of the analyses before we consider the con clusions. I can enumerate a great number of instances in which chemists have differed very widely in their determinations of phos phorus and manganese. A prominent iron fitam made a contract with the Edgar Thomson Steel Company to deliver pig metal guar anteed to be between 0.07 and 0.08 phosphorus; an analysis by our chemist resulted in phosphorus 0.148 and 0.152,—a rather startling difference! Again, a sample bar of steel, in which our chemist reported phosphorus 0.11, was tested by a chemist of au other Bessemer works, ana his determinations were phosphorus between 0.07 and 0.08: A leading engineering establishmeut of Pittsbdrgh bought iron claimed by a chemical analysis to contain 0.08 phosphorus; our Mr. Ford found phosphorus 0.145. A chem ist connected with an open-hearth works reported manganese in a piece of steel, 1.14; in a second determination from the same piece of steel, by the same chemist, manganese was reported 0.43. A special meeting of the Alaska Mining and Engineering society, held at Perseverance Mine of the Alaska Gastineau Mining Co. on Mar. 17, 1017, was attended by 46 members and about 80 guests, among whom were members of the Alaska Territorial Legislature. After an interesting trip through the mine in the afternoon, the members and guests assembled for dinner at the Perseverance Dining Room. After the dinner G. T. Jackson, assistant manager of the company, as president of the society, called the meeting to order. After the reading of the minutes, he welcomed the guests and then gave a short history of Perseverance Mine. B. L. Thane, manager of the company, briefly out-lined its general organization. The following papers were read-by members of the society and members of the staff of the Perseverance Mine: "The Organization of the Mine Staff and the Methods of Mining," by B. B. Nieding, Mine Supt.; "Tramming Equipment and Costs," by R. R. Van Valkenburgh; "The Surveying of the Mine," by R. L. Healey, Mine Engineer; "The Electrical Equipment of the Mine," by W. S. This paper presents a case study of how an asset strategy and zero based budget was developed for an existing crushing plant that had been purchased from the contract service provider by an Australian Iron Ore miner. The goal was to directly align the strategies and budget to the business goals. This however was not a simple task due to poor historical records and a general lack of information. These challenges were overcome and the benefits of a documented maintenance strategy, a justifiable zero based budget and employee engagement were realized.

Joseph K. Stone, Jr. (Kaiser Engineers, Oakland, Calif.)—I would like to compliment the authors on their clear presentation of the results of their study of the pneumatic processes. We hope that the Inland Management decision to make this information available to all will induce others to release additional valuable fundamental data which they have accumulated in the field. There are two points upon which we would like to comment. In the discussion of Table VII it was indicated that the "oxygen consumptions were about the same as has been reported for other oxygen steelmaking processes". This conclusion is apparently based upon the consumption of 2100 cu ft per ton shown in Table VII. The data in Table IV also permits calculation of 2520, 2280, 2250 and 2700 cu ft per ton in heats 1 to 4, respectively. These figures are in the same general range as those reported for the Kal-Do and Rotor Processes using Thomas iron, but considerably above the following figures for four of the operating L-D Process Plants while using iron which is similar to American basic iron: Donawitz 1760 cu ft per ton Adapted from Cuscoleca' LinZ 1900 cu ft per ton Trenkler & Hauttmann2 Dofasco 1850 cu ft per ton D. The Stevens Gateway Project is an expansion of the Stevens Institute campus overlooking the Hudson River in Hoboken, NJ. The plans call for 90,000 ft2 (8360 m2) of new classroom, research, and student life facilities in new, 4-story buildings. The excavations for the building footprints were bounded by city streets and existing buildings, including the historic Carnegie Laboratory of Engineering, built in 1902. Pit underpinning was originally specified for the Carnegie building. However, given the depth of cut, construction time required for the 13 ft (4.9 m) deep pits would be substantial. The geotechnical contractor retained for the support of excavation work therefore offered an innovative active soil nail wall design that would meet project requirements in a shorter timeframe. Unlike the passive soil nail systems common in the industry that are chiefly used for soil slope stabilization, active soil nail walls contain pre-stressed anchor components to resist soil movement and limit settlement of soil and structures being contained. In addition to a discussion of the overall design approach of the active soil nail wall system, this paper will include a detailed description of its constructability and effectiveness. This project’s use of a conventional slope stabilization technique for an unconventional purpose may have positive implications going forward. INTRODUCTION Stevens Institute of Technology is a private university in Hoboken, New Jersey that sits on the cliffs of the City of Hoboken overlooking the Hudson River and Manhattan Island to the east of the campus. In recent years, the university has executed numerous plans to expand and upgrade its campus academic, student life, and residential facilities. One such project is the Academic Gateway Complex. The plan adds 90,000 ft2 (8360 m2) of new classroom, research, and residential facilities while also enhancing community connections by building a park to serve as a green corridor for the city. The proposed construction took place on the north and south side of 6th Street between Hudson Street and River Street. The project included the demolition of an existing university building followed by the construction of two, 4-story buildings on the north and south property lots. The north and south buildings will be connected by a second floor bridge spanning 6th Street. The buildings each contain a full basement extending from the proposed ground floor at approximately El. 41ft (12.5 m) to the basement subgrade at El. 26 ft (7.9 m). Each building will be constructed on respective mat foundations. Figure 1 presents an overview of the project area.

PREVIOUS work' on a four-component system (Cu-Mn-Ni-Fe) resulted in the development of consistent relationships between the chemical composition and the electrical properties of these manganin-type alloys. The present study was undertaken to develop alloys with temperature coefficients of resistivity and thermoelectric properties more desirable than those of the manganin type, and to determine whether the relationships which had been found for the Cu-Mn-Ni-Fe alloys could be extended to five-and six-component alloy systems. PREPARATION OF ALLOYS The five- and six-component alloys were made from OFHC copper rod, ARMCO iron, electrolytic nickel, manganese cathode chip, and special high-purity aluminum and indium. A Cu-Mg master was used for deoxidation. The compositions of these materials are given in Table I. The alloys were melted and cast as indicated previously,' except that no cover was used and the melts were teemed. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The finished wire size of 0.0808 in. diam was again selected for the reason that the test specimens would be self-supporting, thus eliminating any extraneous effects which might have been introduced by winding smaller diameter wire on spools or forms. The following tests were performed on the finished wires: A) Chemical Analyses—All of the components of these alloys were determined by premium gravimetric methods. The principle residual impurity contained in these alloys is 0.008 pct Mg (by weight), maximum. Tables II and 111 present the mean analyses computed from at least four determinations of each constituent. B) Electrical Characteristics—The test procedures forthe determination of the thermal emf vs copper, resistivity, and the resistance-temperature relationship are given in detail in Ref. 1. It was also shown that the resistance-temperature relationship is of the form Pt = P,n + At -B/2, [1] where P, is the resistance at t C expressed in percent of a given standard resistance, P, is this per- 0 centage at 0°C, and A and B are constants for a given, properly treated, composition. The results of the electrical tests are also given in Tables II and 111. INTERPRETATION OF DATA The modified Linde2 formula, known to be valid for dilute binary solid solutions, was applied to the complex Cu-Mn-Ni-Fe type alloys. This relationship is of the form where Ap is the increase in resistivity. Zb the valence of the solute, Zn the valence of the solvent, and K and K are designations assigned by Robinson and Dorn3 to the constants for the periodic group to which solute element belongs. The units of K, are -cm per valence difference squared per at. pct; those of K2 are pa-cm per at. pct. For the sake of brevity, these units are not repeated in the following discussion. Calculations were made to determine if this formula was accurate for five-component systems. No experimental studies were made of the Cu-In and Cu-A1 binary systems. The effects of indium additions upon the resistivity of copper are given by Linde. These data, along with those of the effects of Mn and Fe, permitted the calculation of the effects of Al.

The Leeville underground mine has been in operation since 2006 and currently produces 2,903 t (3,200 st) of ore per day, with an average gold grade of 0.4 opt. The mine’s horizontal extent is large, 762 by 152 m (2,500 by 500 ft), while its vertical extent is 6 to 61 m (20 to 200 ft). A high density of joints occurs within the host rock. Based on rock mass rating and field observation, the ground conditions at Leeville can be characterized as poor to very poor. As such, heavy ground support is required for its mining operation. Ore zones with a height in excess of 10 m (35 ft) are considered for longhole stoping. A typical stope measures 6 m (20 ft) wide, 30 to 55 m (100 to 180 ft) long, depending on the ground conditions, and 10 to 30 m (35 to 100 ft) high, depending the thickness of the ore body, yielding 9,100 to 18,000 t (10,000 to 20,000 st) when completed. Narrow ore zones, less than 10 m (35 ft), are mined using cut and fill. Drifts at the Leeville Mine are 4.6 m (15 ft) wide by 4.6 m (15 ft) high. Because of poor ground conditions at this mine, the establishment of a ground control monitoring system is key to operating both safely and successfully. This monitoring system is composed of comprehensive instrument design and installation. Instruments include multi-point borehole extensometers (MPBX) and “stretch measurement to assess reinforcement tension” (SMART) cables. The monitoring system covers the mining zones and infrastructure openings. After about two years’ application and measurement, useful data has been collected and continues to be collected; this information will be used to design future stopes and infrastructure. The system makes engineering and operation teams able to do their job with more confidence and efficiency.

THE technique developed by Duwez, Willens and Kle-ment' for rapid solidification of molten alloys in small quantities by ejecting them on to a highly conducting substrate with the aid of a shock wave has come to be known as "liquid quenching" or "splat cooling" in literature and has already been applied to alloys of many binary systems.' The very high cooling rates of the order of l060 to 1080 per sec obtained in this technique and the consequent drastic undercooling of the melt have led to such striking results as formation of new amorphous and crystalline metastable phases and extension of solid-solubility limits in many alloy systems. The cooling rates in these experiments can, however, be neither accurately measured nor effectively controlled and hence the occurrence of either more than one metastable phase or appreciable differences in constitution in splat-cooled alloys of the same composition cannot be ruled out.3 In fact, workers in two laboratories have reported formation of two different cubic metastable phases in liquid-quenched Au-Si alloys containing 17 to 20 at. pct si.4,5 The present note deals with some new and interesting results obtained in a Ag-21 at. pct Ge alloy and a Au-27 at. pct Ge alloy subjected to the liquid-quenching treatment at different cooling rates. Two alloys of nearly the same composition had earlier been rapidly solidified by the standard "gun technique" in the same laboratory and shown to solidify in nonequilibrium structures, viz., an hcp phase (a = 2.987Å;c =4.718Å) in the Ag-Ge system6,7 and both hcp (a = 2.885Å; c = 4.754Å) and tetragonal (a = 11.627A; c = 22.491Å) phases in the Au-Ge system.3 Apart from different substrates (copper and stainless steel), different melt temperatures (50º to 500°C above the liquidus), and different capillary sizes (0.4 to 1.5 mm diam) in the "gun technique", slower cooling rates of the order of l050C per sec were also obtained in the present work by replacing the substrate by water at room temperature in a modification of the technique due to Olsen and Hultgren.8 No attempt was made to measure the cooling rate in any experiment. The products varied from fine powder (>40 pct by wt—200 mesh) obtained by quenching in water to thin flakes and foils (11.0 sq mm to 4.0 sq cm) produced by splat cooling. They were subjected to the Debye-Scherrer method of X-ray examination in each case. In case of the Ag-Ge alloy, in addition to the expected metastable hcp phase,6 a coexistent tetragonal phase (a = 5.093,Å; c = 7.009Å) was detected in some experiments. Eight weak X-ray reflections from this phase could be identified, two of them being the same as reported earlier.7 With increase in the cooling rate, the dominant hcp phase seems to be first accompanied by traces of silver or germanium and then either homogeneous or mixed with traces of this new tetragonal phase. The splat-cooled Au-Ge alloy showed generally the expected hcp and tetragonal phases,3 but sometimes traces of germanium were also present. Tongkuangyu Copper Mine is currently the only mine in China employing block caving. It comprises two large orebodies known as the No 4 orebody and the No 5 orebody. They are approximately 50° in dip angle, 80 to 240 m in width and 800–1000 m in strike length. The two orebodies are separated by a distance of 110–130 m. Production with block caving originally, ie Phase 1 project started at Tongkuangyu from the first undercut at a depth of 200–300 m below the ground surface and designated as Lift 810 m in late 1989 and has continued to the present. During the last 25 years Tongkuangyu has mined three lifts: Lifts 810 m, 690 m and 530 m. The previous two lifts utilised a slusher process with an annual designed production rate of 4 Mt. In this context the lift name represents the elevation of track haul level.The Tongkuangyu Phase 2 project serves for two lifts (ie Lift 530 m and 410 m) under the elevation of 690 m and the annual designed production rate is 6 Mt. Since the orebody is approximately 50° in dip angle, it is originally designed that production at Lift 530 m is comprised of one main extraction level and two auxiliary extraction levels in the footwall and undercutting is started from one end of the extraction footprint forward to another end, which is from north-east to south-west.Production at Lift 530 m started from March 2011 and reached to 6.39 Mt in 2013 and 6.9 Mt in 2014. Additionally, Tongkuangyu improved block caving processes and used modern mining equipment, which differ from the previous two lifts. Blastholes for undercutting and drawbell-preparation are now drilled using jumbos. The blasted ore is transferred to the underground crushing station via 10 t electric load-haul-dumps (LHDs) and then delivered to surface via a belt conveyor 3200 m long.Due to increasing ground pressure, a consequence of mining depth increase, stress abutment and inadequate support, significant damage occurred at the Tongkuangyu Copper Mine with production at Lift 530 m. This resulted in significant production delays and rehabilitation costs. A series of improvements have since been implemented including an advanced undercut sequence and increased ground support. All of these improvements have allowed Tongkuangyu to alleviate ground control issues, reduce operating costs and ensure safe production.CITATION:Liu, Y M and Bian, K W, 2016. This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States was made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. By agreement with the American Petroleum Institute, identification of the Items is confidential. It present's analytical data for 4,608 samples, representing the products of 101 companies. The samples were collected during December 1956, January and February 1957. As in previous surveys, the gasolines covered by this survey include those from both large and small suppliers. The data were obtained by laboratories of various refiners, motor manufacturers, and chemical companies and submitted to the Bureau of Mines for compilation. A list of the Notional Motor Gasoline Survey reports published during the post 10 years is given on page 5.

"PT International Nickel Indonesia, a subsidiary of Inco Limited, mines and processes nickel laterite ores for the supply of nickel matte, primarily to the Japanese market. It has large ore reserves and a substantial portion of its energy requirement is supplied from its own hydro-electric plant. Since the early 1980s, the company has increased its production level and has dramatically reduced its unit costs. Projects are in progress to further decrease costs and recently a major expansion - 31% increase in nominal capacity - has been undertaken, consistent with marketing opportunity in Japan. The expansion project, which has a low capital cost per unit of production, is outlined in this paper.IntroductionPT Inco is a fully integrated mining and smelting facility located in Indonesia on the island of Sulawesi, and is based on a very large, world class nickel laterite orebody located 60 km inland from the Gulf of Bone. Construction of a single furnace line plant started in 1973. Complete supporting infrastructure of townsite, hospital, schools, shopping centres, road systems, and an airport, all had to be built. Prior to completing the first phase, the decision to expand the plant to a three kiln-furnace line was made. A major factor in the decision was the ability to develop the hydroelectric potential of the nearby Larona River. This involved construction of a 30 m high dam, and a 7 km surface canal to the generating station. The penstocks drop 150m to three 55 Mw turbines. The power generated is sufficient to supply the entire electrical load for the complete smelting complex and town site. The unique capability to supply the high smelting energy requirements for a lateritic nickel ore by fully captive hydro power, has, over the past decade insulated PT Inco from the large upward swings in oil prices suffered by other lateritic nickel producers.Wet ore is first partially dried to 20% moisture in two co-currently fired rotary driers, screened on an internal trommel, and delivered to two dry ore storage buildings. The partially dried ore is calcined at 750°C and partially reduced in three large 100 m by 5.5 m kilns. Reduction is accomplished by lancing bunker C oil onto the ore bed at the discharge end of the kiln. The kilns are equipped with five air pipes with onboard blowers to gradually bum the combustible gases generated by the lance oil. The kilns were also originally equipped with two side burners to supply additional heat close to the feed end of the kiln. Calcined ore is transferred by 20 ton refractory lined containers to the furnace feed bins at the top of the smelter. Smelting is carried out in three 18 m diameter furnaces powered by 45 Mw transformers. Slag is skimmed at 1550°C through water cooled breast plates and removed to the slag dump by Haulmaster Carriers. Matte of 25% Ni, 1O% S, 65% Fe is tapped at 1350°C into the converter aisle. The iron is slagged in converters to produce a nickel sulphide matte at 80% Ni. Three rotary Kaldo converters were initially installed. The product matte is granulated, dried, and shipped in returnable rubber bags to Japan. Most of the matte is fluid-bed roasted to nickel oxide and then directly reduced in a second reducing fluid bed reactor at our facilities in Japan.The smelting complex was designed to smelt two million tonnes of dry ore per year, equivalent to 34 000 tonne nickel production at an ore grade of 2% Ni. The cost of the entire project including working capital was $900 million."

Normal dodecyl mercaptan was evaluated as a collector for flotation of sulfide minerals and precious metals. The reagent is from the class of normal mercaptoalkanes (n-alkyl thiols), and is commercially available in the form of a mixture of n-dodecyl mercaptan and a dispersant, under the trade name Pennfloat(TM)3. Reported are results of bench-scale flotation experiments on many commercially treated base metal and precious metal sulfide ores. Dosages, points of addition, and flotation pH were among the uariables studied. Most notable results were increased copper, molybdenum, and precious metals recoveries. Dosages of dodecyl mercaptan on some ores were considerably lower than required for conventional collectors.

"This work focuses on the characterization of heat generation during dry fracture by direct impact of a tantalum ore. Moreover, an attempt was made to quantify the heat energy loss to the environment during the grinding process of a ball mill. The study was carried out using mineral samples from a Spanish mine that were characterized by measuring their density and specific heat. During the experiments, increases of temperature ranging from 5.9 to 7.3 °C after the fracturing process were observed. A numerical model was then applied to calculate temperature distributions through the mill wall. Three possible combinations of heat transfer coefficients were analyzed, from (1) Kapakyulu and Moys, (2) Duda and (3) the heat transfer laboratory of Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. The models with the coefficients from Kapakyulu and Moys and the heat transfer laboratory of Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya were found to provide results that were in best agreement with the experimental data. IntroductionEvery year, several billion tons of metallic ores, minerals, cement and other solids used in the ceramic and chemical industries are subjected to size reduction in ball mills around the world. The U.S. Department of Energy (2005) reported that in the United States about 29 percent of the total energy used by the mining industry, or 0.4 percent of total U.S. energy consumption, is used in comminution. In Canada and Australia, comminution is responsible for about 2 percent and 1.5 percent of total energy use, respectively. In nonindustrialized countries where mining constitutes higher fractions of their industrial sectors, comminution costs represent a significant contribution to mine operating costs. The specific energy consumption values for the grinding of these materials typically range from 5 to 50 kWh/t. Thus, a significant amount of electrical energy is consumed in the ball mill grinding operation (Aguado et al., 2006; Gupta and Sharma, 2014). Grinding can represent up to 50 percent of the direct operating cost in a mineral processing plant, especially as comminution devices operate in highly inefficient ranges of 4 to 8 percent (Wang, Yang and Yu, 2012)."

The Bureau of Mines developed a spectrochemical method to determine six constituents in coal ash in the following concentration ranges: silica 9 to 63 percent, alumina 7.5 to 35 percent, ferric oxide 2 to 30 percent, calcium oxide 1 to 29 percent, magnesium oxide 0.5 to 6 percent, and titanium oxide 0.5 to 4 percent. Samples of coal ash are fused with a mixture of lithium tetraborate and vanadium pentoxide. The resulting beads are crushed, mixed with powdered graphite, and briquetted. The pellets are analyzed spectrographically, using controlled high-voltage spark excitation. Vanadium serves as the internal standard. Effects due to matrix variations are minimized by fusion with lithium tetraborate. Intensity ratios of selected analytical lines are determined photometrically, Concentrations are read from analytical curves, prepared from synthetic standards, relating log intensity ratios to log concentration. A combustion procedure is used to determine sulfur tri-oxide. The method is most useful when large numbers of coal ashes must be analyzed but a high degree of accuracy is not essential.

THE history of mining in South Africa differs somewhat from that of other countries in the part taken by the aborigines in the development ?of the mineral deposits. The Spaniards in America, and the fortune-seekers of Australia and New Zealand, found large numbers of natives in these new countries, but the inhabitants did not become willing or efficient workers ill the mines which the white men started. The Kaffirs of South. Africa have not shown the same antipathy to labor, nor do they show any signs of dying out in the presence of the white man's civilization. They are a virile race, and so far the vices of civilization have not killed. them. While it is true that the brain and skill necessary for the exploitation of the mineral resources of this sub-continent-have been supplied by the white race, it is also a fact that most of the rough labor in the development of the mining industry of South Africa has been done by the Kaffirs. The Kaffir tribes differ greatly in their mental and physical capabilities. Compare, for instance, a Zulu of Natal with a Bechuana, or a Xosa of Cape Colony with some of the degenerate tribes of Central or East Africa, and you will find that they have little in common, save that their skin is black and that they do not believe in clothes. As a general rule, the tribe's in the milder, healthier climates are far superior, both in mind and body, to the Kaffirs brought up in the hot malarial sections of Central Africa; and it naturally follows that the black men from the temperate zones of the country, are much finer workmen than the degenerates from less favorable sections: It is universal in South Africa to speak. of the .Kaffirs as " boys." No matter if he is 90 years old, the Kaffir is always a " boy," and in this paper the word " boy " is synonymous with Kaffir.

This document presents a description of the results of a project aimed at producing a broad description of current mining training programs and an evaluation of their effectiveness with respect to reducing mine injuries. Aggregate training and injury data were used to evaluate the overall training effort at 300 mines as well as specific efforts in twelve categories of training course objectives. From such evaluations, recommendations were derived with particular emphasis being placed on identifying program characteristics that tend to be associated with effective training. Recommendations were also formulated with reference to role changes in industry and government interaction with respect to training programs, new or additional training programs, changes in the types of course materials and training methodologies, and recommendations concerning new areas for investigation.
