The distribution of manganese and oxygen between molten iron and FeO-MnO-SiO2 slags not saturated with SiO2 has been determined and used to calculate activities of MnO and SiO2 in MnO-SiO2 slags. These were found to be intermediate between the corresponding activities in FeO-SiO2 and CaO-SiO2 slags. THE equilibrium constant for the reaction between molten iron containing manganese and slags containing FeO and MnO, namely: FeO(slag) + Mn = MnO (slag) + Fe(1iquid) is most conveniently represented by: (MnO) Kmn== (FeOHMn] [Fe] is omitted, since for dilute solutions of manganese in iron, afe is approximately constant. When activities are used for (MnO), (FeO) and [Mn], Kmn is a true equilibrium constant and will apply to all types of slags, but when weight percentages are used, the values obtained for Kmn for different slags vary considerably. The equilibrium between iron containing manganese and relatively pure FeO-MnO slags has been investigated by several workers;1-4 the most recent investigation reported is that of Chipman, Gero, and Winkler.4 Their results, corresponding to slags containing up to 4 pct SiO2, were represented by the equation: 6440 log KMn = +2.95 In this case both slag and metal may be assumed to be ideal solutions, therefore the values of Kmn so derived represent the true constant for the manganese reaction. As the molecular weights of MnO and FeO are almost equal, weight concentration of these oxides may also be used in the above expression. Acidic oxides such as SiO2 and P2O5 affect the activities of FeO and MnO differently, so that when total concentrations by weight of FeO and MnO are used in the above expression for Kmn the values obtained are no longer constant. These will be denoted by K'mn. Körber and Oelsen5 investigated the manganese reaction using silica-saturated iron-manganese-silicate slags and found: 7940 logK'mn =3.172 This corresponds to Kmn values much higher than those obtained for pure oxide slags. The results of Körber and Oelsen, and Chipman, Gero, and Winkler are summarized in Table I. In the present investigation it was decided to study the manganese reaction using iron-manganese-silicate slags not saturated with silica, and which fell mainly between the orthosilicate join 2FeO . SiO2 - 2MnO.SiO2 and the FeO-MnO side of the ternary system FeO-MnO-SiO2. It has been shown" that the phases present in solidified slags of this part of the diagram are (FeO, MnO) and (2Fe0.Si02, 2Mn0-SiO,) solid solutions. Such an investigation would be of interest in deoxidation and also gives information on activities in liquid slags. This equilibrium has not as yet been investigated successfully. Hilty and Crafts7 attempted to examine this reaction in a rotating crucible furnace, but were unable to obtain suitable slag samples. In the present investigation one series of experiments was carried out in a rotating crucible furnace, because the success of Taylor and Chipman8 with such a furnace in their study of oxygen distribution between molten iron and (CaO, MgO) — FeO-Si0, slags suggested that it would minimize contamination of the slag by the crucible material. A second series was carried out using a wire-wound resistance furnace. Rotating Crucible Furnace Experiments In all cases the metallic charge consisted of 800 to 1000 g Armco iron containing 0.02 pct C, 0.03 pct Mn, and traces of Si. This report presents a programme of work to demonstrate the use of a surface-based centralised computer control system for the remote monitoring and control of underground conveyors in a US coal mine. The system selected for demonstration was the 'Dynalink' Micro MINOS system which is manufactured by Hawker Siddeley Dynamics Engineering Limited. The site selected was Barnes S Tucker Lancashire No. 20 Mine located near Carrolltown, Cambria County, Pennsylvania. The system concept, operating and application software was designed and developed by the. British National Coal Board. The report describes the selection of the site, specification of the system requirements, commissioning, operation and evaluation of the system under typical US mine operating conditions. Experience with the system, based primarily on the system reliability and performance of conveyor control, was favourable. Mine management personnel felt that the system had successfully achieved its objectives and were keen to expand monitoring and control to other activities.

An in.t!estigation has been made of the equilibrium conditions at 1200°C in the reaction between hydrogen sulfide gas and sulfur dissolved in Fe-Si alloys From this the equilibrium constant, activity coefficient, and activity of sulfur in solution were calculated. A number of studies of the equilibrium of sulfur with iron and iron alloys have given closely agreeing results from which the activity and free energy of the dissolved sulfur may be found. Sherman, El-vander, and chipman1 discussed the significant researches of dilute solutions of sulfur in liquid iron prior to 1950, and the results of this study indicated that the relationship between the ratio of PH2S/PH2 in the environment and the percentage of sulfur in solution is not a linear one. Morris and williams2 studied the equilibrium conditions in the reaction between hydrogen sulfide gas and sulfur dissolved in liquid iron and Fe-Si alloys, and reported that silicon dissolved in iron has a pronounced effect on the equilibrium conditions. They found that the activity of sulfur in iron is increased by the addition of silicon. At a silicon content of 4 pet the activity coefficient of sulfur was about twice that for sulfur dissolved in pure iron. Sherman and chipman3 investigated the chemical behavior of sulfur in liquid iron at 1600°C through the study of the equilibrium: H2 + S = H2S; K = PH2S/PH2 . 1/as [1] From the known equilibrium constant of the reaction between H2, H2S, and S and the experimental data, the activity of sulfur in the melt was determined. They found that the activity coefficient of sulfur defined as fs = as/%s is increased by silicon and decreased by manganese. Morris4 and Turkdogan5 also reported that manganese decreases the activity coefficient of sulfur in liquid iron and iron-base alloys. A recent technique of sulfur analysis developed by Kriege and wolfe6 of the Westinghouse Research Laboratories permits an accurate sulfur analysis of 0.5 * 0.2 ppm in the range of 0.1 to 3 ppm, whereas in the range of 3 to 50 ppm the accuracy is ±1 ppm. This technique of sulfur analysis was utilized in this experiment. Previous unpublished data reported that sulfur analysis by the combustion technique was not accurate below 20 ppm. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Five 5-lb ingots of high-purity Fe-Si were prepared. Three of these ingots were prepared without the addition of manganese but with a variation of silicon contents from 2 to 4 pet. The remaining two ingots contained 3 pet Si with the addition of manganese. Ingots were made at each of three silicon levels: 2, 3, and 4 pet. No alloys were made with less than 2 pet Si since below approximately 1.8 pet Si the binary alloy exhibits a to ? transformation. The two additional ingots of 3 pet Si-Fe were made at each of two manganese levels: 0.20 and 0.50 pet. To minimize the effects, if any, of impurities on the activity of sulfur on Si-Fe, the best metals available were used for melting. All ingots were vacuum-melted in magnesium oxide crucibles. After obtaining samples for chemical analyses, the ingots were processed. This consisted of hot rolling and subsequently cold rolling the alloys. Each ingot was hot-rolled at 1000°C, reheating between every pass to minimize grain growth. All heating was done in a protective argon atmosphere. The slabs were hot-rolled to strips 50 mils thick. After hot rolling, all the material was pickled to remove the scale formed on the surface of the strip during hot rolling. The material was then cold-rolled to 12-mil strips. Single strips of the material used in this experiment were hydrogen-annealed at 1200°C for 16 hr in an alumina tube. Chemical analyses of strips M-1, M-3, M-4, M-7, and M-8 are given in Table I. Sulfur, silicon, and manganese analyses were made from the millings from the cold-rolled 12-mil strips. The oxygen analyses were made from slugs of the as-cast material. The hydrogen sulfide used in these experiments was supplied from cylinders containing a mixture of argon and 1 pet hydrogen sulfide. The parts per million of hydrogen sulfide were determined from the analysis of the exit gas of the annealing furnace during each anneal. The elution of gold from activated carbon using deionized water by R. J. DAVIDSON, M.Sc., Ph.D. (Rhodes) (Visitor) and D. DUNCANSON, H.N.C., B.Sc. Hons. (Strathclyde) (Visitor) The pretreatment of gold-loaded activated carbon with a relatively strong sodium cyanide solution prior to elution with deionized water at 90 to 125°Chas been shown to have a most beneficial effect on the elution of gold. The findings emphasize the important role played by the calcium cation and the hydroxyl anion in effecting efficient elution of gold. The elution of the relatively unstable complexes of silver and base metals with cyanide was also significantly affected by the ratio of the sodium cyanide to sodium hydroxide in the reagents used in the pretreatment stage. It was demonstrated that the use of 0,5 bed volume of a pretreatment reagent comprising 10 per cent sodium cyanide stabilized with I per cent sodium hydroxide for safety reasons resulted in a virtually 100 per cent recovery of adsorbed gold, silver, and base metals on subsequent elution with deionized water. The elution procedure takes a relatively short time, about 14 hours at 90°C (7 bed volumes) or 3 hours if pressure elution at 125°C (4 to 5 bed volumes) is used. Because the mechanism of elution after pretreatment entails the shifting of a physical rather than a chemical equilibrium, the higher the gold loading on the activated carbon, the more efficient is the elution procedure. When compared with other elution procedures, the proposed method appears to have several economic advantages.

"Froth structure and stability are known to play an important role in determining flotation recovery and selectivity. An industrial sampling campaign was performed to develop a clearer understanding of the effect of flotation variables on froth stability and the role played by the resulting stability on flotation performance.Froth stability was estimated as the fraction of bubbles bursting on the surface of the froth through image analysis and the solids loading on the bubbles at the top surface. It was generally found that high air flowrates resulted in a drop of froth stability showed by a drop in the fraction of air overflowing and a decrease in the solids loading and simultaneously produced low copper recoveries and low concentrate grades. Deep froths only allowed a small fraction of air to overflow and consequently produced low recoveries. An increase from a standard to high frother dosage did not result in a larger fraction of air overflowing, hence producing low recoveries. Likewise, low frother addition only allows low recoveries because the resulting unstable froth cannot support itself. Low aeration was found to be preferential as it allowed high particle loading, therefore high bubble stabilisation, and low gangue entrainment, resulting in the highest flotation performance.Additional laboratory tests were performed to introduce a new stability parameter and to give a clearer understanding of the effect of flotation variables on froth stability. The results confirmed some of the observations made on the plant."

Agnico-Eagle Mines Limited, Laronde Division, operates the deepest single-lift shaft in the western hemisphere. The initial Penna hoisting plant was designed for a production rate of 1800 tonnes per day (t/d) from a 2240 m deep shaft. Exploration success, while sinking the shaft, led to a decision in 1998 to increase the production rate to 4500 t/d of ore from a loading depth of 2200 m. The new production rate was achieved by increasing the size of the rope and reducing the rope static factor from the existing 5.0 required by regulation to a static factor using the formula 25 000/(4000 + L) contained in a draft document that would eventually become SABS 0294 in South Africa. The formula permits Laronde to use a static factor as low as 4.0. The upgraded Penna hoisting system is the first hoisting plant outside of South Africa to meet the South African requirements. This paper describes the conversion of the hoisting plant to the lower rope selection factor in the year 2000 and the operating and maintenance issues experienced since then.

Iodide zirconium was combined with calculated amounts of nitrided zirconium sponge and arc melted to prepare alloys in the 0 to 6 wt pct N region. Annealing treatments were carried out at 21 temperature levels. Metallographic examination of the heat-treated specimens permitted construction of the binary phase diagram from 0 to 6 pct N. Features of the diagram include the peritectic formation of both a and ß solid solutions. The maximum solubility of nitrogen is 0.8 pct in 8 zirconium and 4.8 pct in a zirconium. An X-ray study of nitrided materials was made in the range 6 to 13 wt pct N region because serious nitrogen losses were experienced when attempts were made to arc melt these high nitrogen alloys. PHASE relationships in the Zr-N system have been determined. Due to the inability to retain nitrogen in nitrogen-rich alloys subjected to arc melting, definitive work was possible only in the range 0 to 6 wt pct (0 to 30 atomic pct) N. Sufficient complementary X-ray work was done to permit construction of the binary phase diagram up to 13.3 wt pct (50 atomic pct) N (ZrN). Small ingots were prepared by arc melting master alloys with enough zirconium to produce an alloy of the desired composition. Following pretreatment, alloys were annealed at temperature levels between 600" and 2020°C. Determination of the phase boundaries was then accomplished by metallographic evaluation of specimens quenched from the various temperatures. Incipient melting techniques were used to corroborate solidus curves, and X-ray diffraction was employed to study the nitrogen-rich region of the a + ZrN phase field. Materials Westinghouse Grade 1 iodide zirconium crystal bar served as the base material for this investigation. The as-received bars were lightly sandblasted, pickled in a 20 pct HN0-5 pct HF aqueous solution, rinsed in water and acetone, and dried. They were rolled to about 1/32 in. strip and acid-pickled, followed by water and then acetone rinses. The material was sheared to approximately 1/4 in. squares, cleaned with acetone, and stored for use. Pure zirconium nitride is not commercially available, according to correspondence with possible suppliers. A literature survey indicated that nitrogen may be introduced into zirconium metal by passing nitrogen or ammonia gas over zirconium at an elevated temperature. After considerable experimentation, a train was devised whereby high quality nitrogen was passed through a series of bubblers to remove the last traces of oxygen, through an H,SO, bubbler and a cold trap to remove moisture, and finally over zirconium within a resistance furnace. Hand-picked Bureau of Mines magnesium-reduced zirconium sponge proved more amenable to nitriding than the crystal bar. The nitrogen used was extra pure gas purchased from Linde Air Products Co. The first two bubblers through which the gas was passed contained a solution suggested by L. F. Fieser" as being ideal for removing the last traces of oxygen from nitrogen. The solution contains 20 g KOH, 2 g sodium-anthraquinone ,9-sulphonate, and 15 g NaHSO, dissolved in 100 ml water. It is blood-red and turns brown when contaminated with oxygen. A saturated lead acetate solution, next in the series of bubblers, removed any H2S which might have formed in the 0, removal stage. An H,SO, bubbler and cold trap removed moisture before the nitrogen was passed over the zirconium. The zirconium was contained in a stainless steel screen within a Vycor or quartz tube in a resistance furnace. Unreacted nitrogen passed out of the system through a mercury bubbler. A nitriding run was performed in the following manner: Zirconium was placed in the screen within the furnace tube. The unit was assembled, suitably clamped off, and evacuated to remove the air and moisture within the tube and that trapped by the zirconium sponge. The unit was flushed with nitrogen and evacuated twice. After nitrogen was allowed to pass over the zirconium for about 30 min, the furnace was turned on; several hours were required to reach temperature. The reaction was allowed to continue at temperature for about 4 hr and the screen was then withdrawn from the hot zone of the furnace by means of a Nichrome or Kanthal rod. The screen and its contents were allowed to cool at the end of the tube and were then removed. At 800°C no more than about 5 pct N could be introduced into the sponge zirconium. This material was designated M-1 (master alloy No. 1) and reserved for the preparation of alloys in the dilute nitrogen region. A second set of experiments was conducted at 1000°C; no more than 7.2 pct N could be introduced into the zirconium at this temperature. Enough material (M-2) of this nitrogen content was prepared to produce a second set of alloys to complement the first and to provide alloys in the 0 to 6 wt pct N range. It was hoped that a diffusion anneal plus a re-nitriding might yield a material of higher nitrogen content. The material containing about 7 pct N was therefore given a homogenization treatment at 1000°C for 6 hr under an argon atmosphere. It was

Mechanical twins were produced in electron-beam melted columbium by high-speed impact at room temperature and by slow or fast compression at -196°C. The composition plane of the twins was { 112} and the shear direction was <111>. Notches in the twin bands often corresponded to traces of {110) of the matrix and appeared to be untwinned regions. Markings within the twin bands were interpreted as resulting from {110} slip in the twins. THERE has been much work in recent years concerning plastic deformation by glide, and the dislocation theory relating to glide has reached a relatively high degree of development. On the other hand, there have been fewer studies of deformation by mechanical twinning, and understanding of this process is far from satisfactory. This method of deformation is of interest for at least two reasons. First, it provides a mechanism in addition to glide for the relief of stresses, and, in the bcc and hexagonal close-packed metals may result in significant amounts of plastic flow. Secondly, there is the possibility that twins may act as barriers for dislocation movement, resulting in pile-ups which could nucleate cracks. As might be expected, the bulk of the literature on mechanical twinning in the bcc metals is concerned with iron. A good summary of the work done prior to 1954 is contained in the book by all.&apos; Recently the refractory bcc metals have become increasingly important. Limited studies have shown that tantalum,2,3 molybdenum,4,5 vanadium,6,7 tungsten,&apos; and columbium9-11 deform by mechanical twinning under some conditions. Alloys of molybdenum with rhenium and tungsten with rhenium show extensive deformation by twinning at room temperature.I2-l4 Most of these studies have dealt primarily with mechanical properties at low temperatures or have shown the existence of twins, and there is only a small amount of information concerning the conditions under which they form. The subject of the present paper is the formation of twins under stress in columbium with a consideration of their morphology. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The material used for these studies was taken from an ingot of columbium which had been melted twice by the electron-be am-method. The analysis of the ingot was (in ppm): B < 1, C = 10, Fe < 100, The cast ingot contained very large grains, and it was possible to obtain single-crystal prisms which measured from ¼ to 3/4 in. on a side. A few experiments were conducted on polycrystalline plate which was prepared by rolling material from the same ingot at room temperature and annealing at 1000 in a dynamic vacuum of 10-6 mm Hg. This gave a plate in which the grains had an average diameter of 3 mm. After the specimens were cut from the ingot, the six faces were metallographically polished and elec-tropolished to remove all traces of cold work. Most of the observations were made on the surfaces of the deformed specirllens without further treatment. Occasionally, etching after deformation was desirable. In these cases, an etchant of the composition 50 parts H2O, 5 parts HNO3 25 parts HF, and 10 parts H2SO4 was found to delineate the twins very well. Unless considerable care was taken to ensure the removal of all disturbed metal left by the mechanical polishing, etching failed to reveal many of the features discussed in this; paper. The specimen&apos;s were deformed either by impact or slow compression at 77°K (liquid-nitrogen coolant), 198°K (dry ice and acetone coolant), and 298°K. The impact load was delivered by a hammer except in one case where the load was delivered by a bullet. Slow compression was carried out on a hydraulic testing machine equipped with a chamber to hold the coolant. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS It has been generally believed that the conditions favoring the formation of deformation twins are large grains, low temperature, and impact loading. In fact, Barrett and Bakish2 found twins in tantalum only after impact deformation at 77°K, and Adams, Roberts, and Smallman10 observed twins in columbium only at 20 For these reasons, the initial experiments of this study used impact loading. Hammer blows caused many bands resembling twins in single crystals a.t 77" but not at 198°K. Only a few slip lines were observed on any of the single-crystal specimens of this study—essentially all the deformation occurred by twinning. The appearance of the twins on the as-deformed surface is shown in Fig. 1. Although both Figs. 1(a) and l(b) are photomicrographs of twins taken at the same magnification and from the same crystal, they are startlingly different in appearance. The Siwek 20-L chamber is widely used throughout the world to evaluate the explosibility of dusts. This research evaluated the quality of dust dispersion in the Siwek 20-L chamber using Pittsburgh coal, Gilsonite, and purple K dusts. A Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) optical dust probe was used to measure optical transmittance through the dust cloud at various locations within the chamber. A total of 540 tests were performed, with triplicate tests at five nominal dust concentrations and six locations. The two standard dispersion nozzles (rebound and perforated annular nozzle) were compared. The transmissions corresponding to the normal ignition delay period were used to: (a) determine variations in spatial uniformity of dispersion obtained with both nozzles; (b) make comparisons between the experimental transmission data and those calculated from theory for the three dusts; and (c) make comparisons with transmission data measured in the PRL 20-L and Fike 1-m3 dust explosion chambers. The uniformity of dispersion for the three dusts was similar with both nozzles, despite the differences in nozzle geometry and mode of operation. Transmission data of the three dusts were all significantly lower than those calculated from theory. This was discovered to be, in part, due to significant reduction in particle size that occurred during dispersion. By measuring particle sizes before and after dispersion, values of 60%, 50%, and 20% reduction in particle size (based on the surface-weighted mean diameter) were obtained for Pittsburgh coal, Gilsonite, and purple K, respectively. Transmission data from the PRL 20-L, Fike 1-m3 and the Siwek 20-L chambers indicated comparable results in terms of uniformity of dispersion. However, transmission data from the Siwek 20-L chamber were significantly lower than those of the PRL and Fike chambers. Again, this was attributed, in part, to the significant reduction in particle size that occurred during dispersion in the Siwek chamber. The design of the outlet (dispersion) valve of the Siwek 20-L apparatus charge vessel was largely responsible for the particle break-up. The contribution to particle break-up by the dispersion nozzles and the high level of turbulence in the chamber were found to be minimal. This is a significant finding in that the dust particle size tested for explosibility in the Siwek chamber is considerably smaller than the original dust sample.

"To understand the solidification behavior of austenitic heat-resistant stainless steel (TP34 7) in rotary electromagnetic-field, the influence of electromagnetic stirring in mold (M-EMS) on solidification structure of TP34 7 heat resistant steel in a round billet continuous casting was investigated based on industrial experiments. The results indicate that the excellent billet solidification structure of TP34 7 heat resistant steel can be obtained with appropriate electromagnetic stirring parameters. The solidification structure of TP34 7 heat resistant steel can be remarkably refmed, central porosity and shrinkage cavity can be remarkably decreased and equiaxed grains zone widens was enlarged. The industrial trials verify that the stirring intensity of TP34 7 heat resistant austenitic stainless steel should be higher comparing with plain carbon steel. Due to a higher viscosity, rotating speed of molten stainless steel was 20-30% lower than that of molten carbon steel in the same magnetic flux density.IntroductionIn recent years, the development of ultra super critical (USC) plants is accelerated by the demands of environment protection and energy saving, and USC plants with steam temperature and pressure conditions in excess of 593°C and 24.lMPa respectively were constructed. To achieve the goal, it is important to develop new materials with excellent high temperature strength, superior resistance to oxidation and corrosion at high temperature. Besides, their cost must be low enough to meet the requirement of plants [ 1]. TP34 7H steel is promising austenitic heat-resistant steel, which is used as superheater/reheater tube material and is extensively used for high temperature components and fossil-fired power plants, and suitable to be used in USC boilers plant. This kind steel contains with about 0. 7%Nb and it keeps higher allowable stress and creep rupture strength than TP304 and TP321H [1-2]. TP347H has conventionally been produced by ingot casting followed by forging and rolling. Recently, in order to decrease the production cost, challenging trials to produce these types of alloys by a continuous casting (CC) process have been attempted. However, the solidification structure of austenitic stainless steel is one of the key issues that attract more attention. Due to the low thermal conductivity of TP347H heat resistant stainless steel (much smaller than that of plain carbon steel), pronounced defects during continuous casting of austenitic heat-resistant steel such as coarse columnar, center porosity and coarse bridging, greatly influence mechanical properties of fmished products.A widely used technique in metallurgy is the inductive drive of molten metals using rotational or traveling magnetic fields. Recently, rotary electromagnetic stirring (EMS) has been applied to reducing various defects and improving increase the solidification structure of the metals in the continuous casting of steel, Al-based alloys and Mg-based alloys [3-8]. Electromagnetic stirring of plain carbon and low alloy steel in the continuous casting bloom and slab is well established for improving the quality of cast products [9-11] and is widely used in industry. However, very few literatures on electromagnetic casting of heat resistant stainless steel have reported. Lower Silesia Coal Basin/SW Poland/ is adjacent to highly gas saturated igneous massiv and since the beginning of this century more than 1500 outbursts have occurred in four existing mines, including 1295 in the most hazardous mine Nowa Ruda. Prevailing part of these are carbon dioxide/coal outbursts of ejected masses 50-5000 tonnes/av.200/t and gas volume released from 200 m3 to 800,000 m3 Magnitude of these phenomena is growing with the depth and for present extraction levels/ 375-753 m/ may be expressed by a formula: M = 4.25/H-400/, where M-masses ejected, t and H - depth of extraction, m. Regulations obligatory hitherto call for gas pressure measurements to be made in 3 m long and 42 mm dia. boreholes spaces not more than 25 m along the longwall face and taking sample of drillings for desorption testing. Criteria of a hazard are following: pressure higher than 30 kPa /for C02/ or 80 kPa /for CH4/ and desorption more than 1,44 cm3/g. These criteria are not satisfactory because many outbursts occurred in spite of low values of parameters measured and for several times no hazard was evident after very high values were obtained. Moreover, observations show that a huge majority of case outbursts occurred in coal weakened by local geological distortion.

Discussion H. J. S. Kriek*: During 1956 Iscor became interested in the acid smelting in a blast furnace of siliceous ores containing 15 per cent silica. This interest was as a result of the successful acid smelting in Germany at a CaO/SiO2-ratio of between 0.4 and 0.8. Acid smelting can become an economic proposition due to a reduction in slag volume accompanied by a lowering of the coke rate. Paschke and Hannel1 found that a free flowing slag (i.e. viscosities of less than two poise) would not be obtained at C/S-ratios lower than 0.82 and that the addition of 3 to 4 per cent alkalies became necessary. In titanium bearing slags it was established that maximum fluidity is obtained with 10 per cent TiO2. Acid smelting resulted in increased sulphur pickup with decreasing O/S-ratio and desulphurization with soda-ash outside the blast furnace was necessary. At Iscor Mr B. B. Segal established that, for slags with (CaO+MgO)/SiO2-ratios of 0.5, 0.6 and 0.7, the addition of alkalies and TiO2 resulted in a substantial decrease in melting point and also of viscosity. At a (CaO+ MgO)/ ratio of 0.53 the addition of 10 per cent TiO2 is as effective as the addition of 3.75 per cent alkalies. This means that a blast furnace can be run without the addition of alkalies and consequently the detrimental effect of alkalies on the lining can be avoided; also that fluid slags with 5 to 15 per cent MgO and 8 to 10 per cent Al203 can be obtained with 10 per cent TiO present. (CaO+ MgO)/SiO2-ratios smaller than 0.5 the addition of titania resulted in a decrease in melting point and also in an increase in viscosity. In ceramic crucibles the slag did not become more viscous with time but thickened appreciably when held in graphite crucibles. No titanium carbonitride could be detected and only Ti20a was found. Prof Howat also did not obtain the TiC-TiN solid solution and therefore it appears that the thickening of the slag is not solely due to the formation of the titanium carbonitrides. This is in agreement with the work of Michailov and Belyakova2 who found that TiO2 decreased the viscosity of acid slags and increased the viscosity of basic slags; that titanium sesquioxide (Ti203) and titanium monoxide (TiO) increased the viscosity of both acid and basic slags and that titanium carbide, which is found in larger amounts in basic slags than in acid slags, considerably increases the viscosity of both acid and basic slags. Patzak et al3 describes the following oxygen deficient titanias, viz Ti2O, TiO, Ti203, Ti3O5, Ti4O7, Ti5O9, Ti6O11- Ti10O9,Ti7O13,Ti8O15 and Ti9O17. Until about 1959 a fair amount of data was available on the viscosity of normal slags to which titania was added2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9. At Iscor an electromagnetic viscometer based on the viscometer developed by Bockris10 was built. Progress was very slow as our main attention was centred around problems associated with the operation of the Rotor process. During 1962 and 1963 two papers containing fundamental work on the viscosities of slags in the systems CaO-SiO2-TiO211 and CaO-SiO2-TiO2 at 0 per cent A1203, 10 per cent Al203 and 20 per cent Al20312 appeared. The work of Ross and Ohno obviated the necessity of any further work by Iscor on the viscosity of blast furnace slags containing titania. Ross gave the following optimum compositions for blast furnace slags containing titania. Titania % Lime % Silica % Lime/Silica-ratio 20 30-42 38-50 0.6-1.10 30 27-36 34-43 0.63-1.06 40 24-32 28-36 0.66-1.14 The optimum temperature is 1,500°C because at this temperature the largest workable composition range exists. Higher temperatures result in narrower optimum composition ranges and in increased rates of thickening. The factors affecting the rate of thickening were also investigated by Ross and Ohno, as the main problem with slags containing titania is not finding compositions which are fluid at operating temperatures but the thickening due to a lack of oxygen. With these slags when there is insufficient oxygen to co-ordinate each silicon atom with its own individual shell of four oxygen ions, some sharing of oxygen ions must occur, resulting in the formation of large silicate ions and a rise in viscosity. The formation of oxygen deficient titania can be prevented as long as iron oxide or manganese oxide remain in the liquid slag. Iwase13 and also Viens, Camp bell and Rogers14 obtained in the experimental smelting of ilmenite ores fluid slags with more than 3 to 5 per cent manganese oxide and ferrous oxide in the slags. It appears that titaniferous ores can be smelted in blast furnaces under the following conditions: (1) Acid slag operation, i.e. at C/S-ratios from O.6-1.0. (2) Dolomite can be used as a flux as MgO is a network modifier. (3) The Al2O3-content must be less than 15 per cent as alumina promotes thickening of the slag and decreases the optimum composition range. (4) The hearth temperature must not exceed 1,500°C. "This report presents the physical properties and related geological and petrographic data of some 84 rock types from operating mines, quarries, or blasting research test sites. These fundamental rock data were collected as a quantitative approach to underground mining problems, blasting research, or other related studies; however, the data are equally applicable to any problem wherein rock characteristics are important factors. Stress-strain curves are given where available, and the standardized procedure for determining elastic constants from static tension tests is described. Computed (laboratory) and measured (field) free-medium velocities are compared in those instances where such data are available. A chart is given showing both the optimum and minimum number of test specimens for the various core sizes employed in the Bureau of Mines standardized physical-property tests. Rock-type, geographical, and geological indexes are included to aid the reader in locating physical-property data in this and previously published Bureau of Mines physical-property reports.INTROD'OCTI ONThis report presents the physical properties of 84 rock types tested from 16 different projects (sections 37-52). The Eleonore property (James Bay district of Northern QuTbec), owned by Goldcorp, hosts gold within stockworks of quartz-tourmaline-arsenopyrite veins and veinlets contained within microcline (potassic alteration) and brown tourmaline replacement zones. The preliminary investigation to recover gold from drill core samples showed that flotation followed by ultra-fine grinding and cyanidation is the preferred option. Ultra-fine grinding is used to liberate gold finely disseminated in sulfides. The flotation concentrate used in the investigation had a P80 of 11 ¦ and contained 75.5 g/t Au, 5.0 g/t Ag, 10.3 per cent S, 0.07 per cent Cu and traces of antimony (0.03 per cent). The mineralogical characterisation showed the presence of 65 per cent gangue minerals, 23 per cent pyrrhotite (hexagonal), 9.6 per cent arsenopyrite, 2.2 per cent pyrite and 0.08 per cent chalcopyrite with trace amounts of galena (0.05 per cent) and sphalerite (0.03 per cent). Gold was in the form of native gold and electrum. A straight cyanidation conducted at pH 11.0, DO of 3 - 5 ppm, 2000 ppm NaCN, 20¦C and for 72 hours extracted 97.0 per cent Au and consumed 31.5 kg/t NaCN. The equilibrium was reached within 24 hours. Increasing the dissolved oxygen to 16 ppm reduced the consumption of cyanide to 22.0 kg/t with 96.7 per cent Au extraction. A 16-hour pretreatment with 2.0 kg/t lead nitrate, followed by a 24-hour cyanidation reduced the cyanide consumption to 6.0 kg/t with a gold extraction of 97.5 per cent. Increasing the lead nitrate addition to 6.0 kg/t reduced the cyanide consumption to 1.2 kg/t by passivating the surface of pyrrhotite. The gold extraction remained at 97.0 per cent. It was possible to decrease the concentration of cyanide to 800 ppm NaCN without compromising gold extraction. The associated cyanide consumption was 1.2 kg/t NaCN. The passivation of gold grains was an issue when the cyanide concentration was decreased to 550 ppm NaCN. The gold extraction decreased to 92.2 per cent. The average lime addition for all the tests was 7.4 kg/t and the average silver extraction was 80 per cent. Efficient cyanidation of an ultra-fine sulfide concentrate with only 800 ppm NaCN represents an advance in leaching of ultra-fine sulfide concentrates. The high addition of lead nitrate would certainly make cyanide destruction easier; consequently reducing the effluent treatment costs and making possible to meet the discharge regulations criteria.CITATION:DeschOnes, G and Fulton, M, 2013. The Bureau of Mines conducted a study in which the magnetic fraction of urban refuse was used as melting stock in the preparation of high-strength, low-alloy and carbon steel. Product steels, made from incinerated steel can scrap, nonincinerated-nondetinned steel can scrap, nonincinerated-detinned steel can scrap, and dilutions of these scraps with No. 1 heavy melting scrap, were used in continuing tests in industrial, rural, and marine environments to determine the effect of residual elements and atmospheric pollutants on their atmospheric corrosion resistance. The respective commercial steels were exposed at the same time to establish baseline corrosion data for the test sites. Weight-loss data are reported for atmospheric exposures of 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 3.8 years. The marine environment was the most corrosive; the industrial environment was the least corrosive. The atmospheric corrosion resistance of the carbon steel was improved 25 pct by using incinerated scrap and nonin-cinerated-nondetinned scrap in the steelmaking process. In no case was the atmospheric corrosion resistance of carbon steel degraded by using the magnetic fraction of urban refuse as melting stock. The presence of sulfur in the corrosion film was the most important factor affecting the corrosion resistance of the steels. With increasing sulfur concentration, the rate of the corrosion reaction was reduced and the corrosion film became more protective. The residual elements in the product steels most responsible for improving corrosion resistance were copper and tin. These elements tended to increase the concentration of sulfur in the corrosion film. At the levels present in the product steels, Cr, Ni, and Pb had no observable effect on the corrosion resistance of the steels.

"Existence of anisotropic Curie temperature materials [E. R. Callen, Phys. Rev. 124, 1373 (1961); J. Appl. Phys. 32 S221 (1961)] is a longstanding prediction - materials that become paramagnetic at a lower temperature along certain crystal directions while remaining magnetically ordered in other directions up to a higher temperature. Validating Callen's theory, we show that all directions within the basal plane of monoclinic F e1Ss (pyrrhotite) single crystal remain ordered up to 603 K while the c-axis becomes paramagnetic at 225 K. Results prompt a re-evaluation of existing magnetic materials with a focus on magnetic characteristics along different crystal orientations above instead of below the ordering temperatures. Theoretical guidelines for identifying new materials with large anisotropy of Curie temperature are also given, and analysis protocol to characterize them in a self-consistent manner is discussed. Materials with such a large directional dependence of Curie temperature open the possibility for uniquely new devices and phenomena, including energy storage and spintronics devices.IntroductionThis paper is an overview of our recently published work on anisotropic Curie temperature materials [l]. As a background, ferromagnetic and ferrimagnetic materials are characterized by a critical temperature below which magnetic interactions prevail over thermal agitation, leading to the appearance of a spontaneous magnetization. Above this critical point, called the Curie temperature, thermal energy eventually overcomes magnetic interactions and the material becomes paramagnetic.It is less well known that the Curie temperature varies with the orientation of the crystal. In ordinary ferromagnets this orientation dependence of Curie temperature is negligible because of the vanishingly small ratio of anisotropy to exchange energy, i.e., the spherical or isotropic exchange term dominates. Thus Curie temperature in ordinary ferromagnets appears to be an isotropic property, and assigning it a single characteristic ordering temperature suffices. However, a 'small' difference is not equivalent to being the 'same', and under appropriate set of conditions the anisotropy of Curie temperature is predicted to become appreciable, as discussed in the following.In formulating the theory of 'anisotropic magnetization' [2, 3] E. R. Callen and H. B. Callen first discussed the ""interesting possibility"" of anisotropic Curie temperature [2] or ACT; Callen and Callen noted that it was W. J. Carr, Jr. who initially raised this question, and they discussed it in detail at the Conference on Magnetism and Magnetic Materials (NY, November 1960), see footnote on page 320 of Ref. [2]. Soon thereafter, E. R. Callen developed the theory underlying the anisotropy of Curie temperature and conditions conducive to its observation [4, 5]."

THIS REVIEW contains abstracts of the technical literature and patents dealing with the history, development, and commercial application of the Bergius and related processes for the hydrogenation, under greater than atmospheric pressures, of liquid and solid carbonaceous materials such as coal, lignite, their distillation and extraction products, pitches and tars, and petroleum and its distillation residues. An attempt has been made to include abstracts of all the published information on this process and of as much of the captured foreign documents and reports compiled therefrom as could consistently be reviewed during the time allotted for the work. Contact with the current literature and patents and review of the foreign documents will be continued and the information will appear in Synthetic Liquid Fuels Abstracts, which is being issued bimonthly as a Bureau of Mines publication. The material in this review is divided in two sections-literature (part I) and patents (part II)-and each of these is arranged alphabetically by author or patentee with further chronological arrangement under each author or group of authors. Secondary authors and patentees as well as assignees are cross-indexed to the main entry. In serial articles or reports the complete series appears in the alphabetical arrangement according to the author of the first member of the series. Succeeding members as well as secondary authors are entered as cross references; Titles of the journals are used as the authors in anonymous references.
