An alinement (steering) sensor for continuous mining machines has been developed under a Bureau of Mines contract. A laser source in the entry projects a beam parallel to the centerline of the entry. The beam is optically shaped to a narrow, vertical fan and illuminates an array of optical sensors bunted on the mini machine. These sensors interpret the location of the beam into meter readings of heading (angle) error and lateral displacement errors. The system, which was tested for 5 months in an operating mine, appears to be fundamentally sound, and with some modification, should be applicable to remote or automatic guidance of continuous miners and other machines.

This report summarizes the results and conclusions reached by various investigators who have attempted to determine the extent to which hydraulic fracturing will affect the secondary recovery of crude oil by waterflooding. It also discusses the most advantageous use of this well-stimulation method in waterflood projects. A thorough search of the literature was made, and pertinent information was abstracted from appropriate reports. A carefully designed and controlled program of formation fracturing is an effective aid in waterflooding because it increases water-injection and oil- production rates. Generally, fracturing has resulted in little or no reduction in ultimate oil recovery, but under certain circumstances recovery has been substantially increased.

One area of study in the Coal Mine Injury Analysis project was to illustrate and enhance the ability of mine safety management personnel to apply analytical techniques to injury experience data and to justify requests for funds for safety enhancement actions on a cost/benefit and other quantitative basis. Four volumes of this final project report detail (1) the objectives and scope of the mine safety management research, (2) the results of literature review, and case studies, and (3) models developed for mine safety management. The four volumes are titled as Volume III: Mine Safety Management, Volume IV: Analytical Techniques for Mine Safety Management; Volume V: Mine Safety Management Case Studies and Volume IX: Training Cost Model. In this volume, the quantitative procedures that have been developed for the mine-specific analyses of accident/injury experience data are presented and their applications are demonstrated in a summary form through case study examples. The quantitative procedures will aid mine safety management personnel to develop focused accident prevention strategies including training, as well as to justify the investment in such proactive programs through cost-benefit analyses.

This paper discusses the progress of the Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) mine from the pre-feasibility study completed in 2005, through commencement of development access in 2008, completion of the feasibility in 2010 and cave initiation in late 2015. This fourth lift of caving in the East Ertsberg Skarn System (EESS) is located 500 m below the currently producing Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) mine and represents approximately half a billion tonnes of ore and around 1900 planned drawpoints, scheduled to be mined at a peak of 80 000 t/d.The paper reviews the mine design, access requirements, planned footprint sequence and major fixed facility installations such as ventilation, oreflow and shops. A discussion of the preproduction development and construction activities and some of the critical technical challenges overcome during this time frame are addressed, as well as the cave initiation process undertaken in late 2015 and the ramp-up of production and progression of caving.CITATION:Casten, T, Priatna, A and Rumbino, H, 2016. The paper provides a brief review of a multivariate uniform conditioning and a localized multivariate uniform conditioning (LMUC) technique, and presents a production reconciliation case study based on a porphyry copper-gold deposit in Peru. The reconciliation study compares the longterm LMUC mineral resources model (typical of new mining projects, which are invariably based on drilling data on a relatively large grid) to the corresponding production blast-hole grade control model, as well as the final plant production.

The substantial investment in tunnels anticipated in the next twenty years has focused new attention on the economics of tunnel construction itself and on some costly problems associated with underground work: the uncertain geologic conditions, the performance and adaptability of men and equipment, and the need for quicker, more efficient excavation methods. There also exists a need to develop better ways of estimating tunnel construction. Inaccuracies in current bid estimates stem from a number of causes, among them (1) the effects of geologic conditions, which are not adequately known prior to construction, (2) the dependence of actual cost on the construction method used and on the interactions among the operations occurring underground, and (3) the reliability of tunneling equipment. Inability to estimate final costs for conventional tunneling more accurately has in turn caused difficulty in gauging the costs and benefits attributable to new tunneling technologies either under development or for which R&D programs are planned. ATTRIBUTES OF THE TUNNEL COST MODEL This paper presents a computer based Tunnel Cost Model (TCM) which quantitatively assesses the uncertainties inherent in underground work, and is detailed enough to aid in preparing estimates or bids. The model employs appropriate techniques of subjective (or "degree of belief") probability and computer simulation of tunnel construction operations to estimate distributions of total tunnel

"Deteriorating ore grade and high demand of metals has tremendously influenced the unit capacity of SAG mills. Pebble circuits have been added to the existing SAG circuits to increase their unit capacity. To make the pebble circuits justifiable, the grate openings are increased almost to 4.5 inches to draw large quantity of pebbles. The inherent transportation problems associated with SAG mills in closed circuit with pebble fraction are more complicated than the single stage SAG mill operation, because the coarse pebbles behave significantly different to that of slurry in pulp lifters. In addition, operation of mills at higher speed, to take advantage of precise design of high release angled shell lifters significantly reduces the discharge efficiency of the conventional pulp dischargers. The presence of a sizable quantity of pebbles in the pulp lifter limits the space available and reduces the flow gradient through the grate thus increases the load inside the mill and hence the mill power-draw. This paper analyses all the problems associated in discharge of slurry and pebbles in SAG mills with pebble circuits. The Outokumpu patented Turbo Pulp Lifter (TPLTM) aims at eliminating the inherent material transport problems to ensure good grinding conditions. Recent installation of TPLTM in a 26-ft SAG mill has proven these claims by reducing the specific power consumption while increasing the mill capacity.INTRODUCTIONThe conventional wisdom is to look at the semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill as just another grinding mill in which ball charge, mill filling, and mill speed are varied to attain maximum throughput. Liner design for the SAG was also approached more from a wear perspective rather than a metallurgical and hydraulic-flow perspective. The extensive research work carried out by Latchireddi and Morrell (1997,2003a and 2003b) has demonstrated to think of the SAG as more of a pump in which the grates and pulp discharger end (“impeller”) were designed to efficiently discharge the product sized particles smaller than the grate size with minimal recirculation out of the mill.The rock load in the mill is essentially depends on ore characteristics and the discharge rate of broken particles. The discharge rate of the product material depends on how efficiently the discharge pump (grate and pulp lifters) is operating. Similar to the impeller design affecting the pump capacity, the pulp lifter design affects the discharge capacity (or mill throughput) of the SAG/AG grinding mills. The general arrangement of AG/SAG mills discharge system is shown in Figure 1."

Selective Blast Mining (SBM) makes use of milli-second sequential blasting technology to separate the valuable reef material from waste rock in the blasting operation at stope faces in the mining of tabular ore bodies such as exist in the gold and platinum mines in South Africa. The waste rock is cast blast to the back of the stoping area, and the reef material is fractured and deposited close to the stope face. Only the reef material is transported to the surface. A simplified economic model is presented to evaluate the economic benefits of SBM. Although premature, in that adequate experimental demonstration of the validity of the model has not yet been possible, the model is presented since it indicates substantial benefits in the case of narrow reef gold mines. It is suggested that many marginal mines should seriously consider SBM. Benefits can also be realised in platinum mines, but a lot more experimental work is necessary to establish cost parameters more reliably. Some practical experience in the use of SBM in the mining of the UG2 reef is presented.

This report describes exploration, development, and exploitation methods, and summarizes costs at the Stormy Day mine, which was discovered in 1941. Several shipments of tungsten ore were made in 1944 to the Metals Reserve Company, Salt Lake City, Utah. The purchase of tungsten by the Federal Government, which began in 1951, stimulated interest in tungsten, and a successful program of exploration with participation of the Defense Minerals Exploration Administration (DMEA) indicated enough ore to warrant development of the property. Development work comprised drifting, crosscutting, and raising. Shrinkage stoping was used for mining the ore. Operations were suspended in October 1956, when the Federal Government terminated its purchase program. Total production of the mine was approximately 20,000 tons of tungsten ore. The roll forming of oxide powders was studied in a Bureau of Mines investigation to find the conditions and parameters required to make satisfactory ceramic strip. High-quality porous or dense alumina, zirconia, and porcelain shapes were made by sintering strip roll-formed at room temperature from powders containing minor amounts of binder and water. Strips with thicknesses of 0.04 to 0.08 inch and bulk densities from 40 to 90 percent of theoretical densities were made. The parameters most important to formability were particle size, condition of the powders, and roll gap. Other factors affecting quality were speed and surface condition of the rolls, amount and type of binder, water content, and sintering conditions. Ceramic strip was formed at rates up to 78 feet/minute, which is 13 to 23 times faster than reported by previous investigators, and forming was done in a simple and inexpensive roll unit. Reshaping the strip was possible by cutting, grinding, shearing, and stamping. The following innovations were developed that allow roll processing not normally possible with ceramic powders: (1) Fine-sized powders were made into strip by preparing these as partially sintered granules; (2) thick strip was formed by pressure feeding powders into the rolls; (3) flexible strip was made using a rubber-base bonding agent; (4) corrugated strip was formed on shaped rolls; and (5) porcelain strip was densified and reduced in thickness by rerolling while hot.

How to monitor and control the support and surrounding strata system on a longwall face effectively is one of the major research problems in ground control. Based on observations on movements of the support and surrounding strata of face No. 2703 of Dongpang colliery, the relationship between the downtime related to support and surrounding strata and other influential factors is analysed systematically in this paper. Monitoring indices and control measures are then determined by taking corresponding downtime as an objective function. When the monitoring method, developed from the above findings, was used on face No. 2703, the downtime due to support and surrounding strata was remarkably reduced, and the face advanced normally.

Refractory gold ores are those from which a significant percentage of the gold cannot be recovered by conventional cyanidation. Historically, roasting has been the primary method for rendering such ores amenable to gold extraction; however, roasting creates environmental problems that are not acceptable in many locations. During the 1980s, consistently strong gold prices drew increasing attention to refractory gold ores, and new processing schemes were commercialized, most prominently aqueous pressure oxidation and more recently bacterial oxidation. Since 1985, pressure oxidation has been incorporated into four plants processing refractory gold ores. A fifth plant is scheduled for start-up in early 1990, and three additional plants are scheduled for production before late 1992. A technical session on treatment of refractory ores was included in the program of `World Gold '89, a Gold Forum on Technology and Practices' held by SME and the AusIMM in Reno, NV, Nov. 5-8, 1989. This article summarizes material from five of the papers presented during the refractory gold session and published in the proceedings of `World Gold '89,' edited by Roshan Bhappu and Rod Harden. This study has appraised available deeper soil loosening equipment in the 1-4 ft. depth range, in the U.S. and abroad which has potential for Illinois prime farm-land reclamation. The appraisal was based on written and/or oral contacts with equipment manufacturers, reclamation experts, and visiting with selected equipment manufacturers. The results indicate that several manufacturers in the U.S., West Germany, and England market static and vibratory deeper soil loosening equipment which may have potential for application in Illinois. The pertinent information concerning each equipment with potential is presented in this report.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B. Tech (Mining Engineering) degree The purpose of this study is to establish whether to mine the Bottom of Pit (BOP)/TOB 4 reserve before the commencement of the Block Cave or whether this should be disregarded and the reserve be extracted at the end of the life of the Cave. The primary goal of this report is to investigate and propose a practical mining method to safely extract the reserve given the set constraints. This report quantifies the additional revenue the TOB 4 will contribute to Finsch?s overall NPV thus enhancing Finsch?s business case and strategically enhancing the SBP. Several underground mining options have been investigated. The proposed mining method includes the installation of a series of extraction tunnels below the TOB 4 reserve from 53 level, with a slot access tunnel system. Ground will be loaded by LHDs from the draw points and tipped into 50-ton dump trucks at a transfer point, from there the ground will be transported to 53 level No. 1groundpass where it will join the existing ground-handling system. Primary development is scheduled to begin October 2002 and last for a period of approximately 7 months until early April 2003.The production is broken into 4 phases. Phase 1 is scheduled to begin mid-April 2003. The final production phase will be completed by November 2005. The production scheduling has been designed in order to remain ahead of the Block 4 undercut in order to ensure stability and safety. Due cognisance was taken of the health and safety of all employees concerned during the design of the mining and ground-handling processes for the Bottom of Pit. As far as is reasonably practicable, the BOP was designed and will be constructed and equipped to provide conditions for the safe operation of machinery and a healthy working environment for people underground. Relevant requirements of the Mine Health and Safety Act regulations pertaining to mining operations have been identified and adhered to during all phases of the design process.

"Toxic fumes cause fatal andnonfatal incidents in underground mining, where the working environment tends to trap the fumes, hindering the restoration of non-harmful conditions. Workers can underestimate the residual fume toxicity and return to the work site too quickly. The toxic fumes from charge explosions depend upon a number things: formulation ingredients, mixture uniformity, water resistance, hole contaminates, rock hardness, and dust interactions. Transitory hole-to-hole waves can cause partial desensitization, ruin the reaction kinetics, and worsen the fume toxicity.Traditionally the toxic fume hazard for a candidate explosive is resolved from a requisite tally of fume components. The resolution starts with the fume spectrum, a tabulation of specie concentrations, transformed to standard reference conditions and readjusted to remove the air dilution. The resultant influence, which is referred to as relative fume toxicity RFT, is deduced by a formula rule with some chosen constants and the requisite concentrations. The RFT result is normally compared to an RFT criterion that represents the worst-case (maximum) tolerable fume toxicity, as stipulated by regulations or otherwise."

Many challenges are faced by workers in lower-seam (42 inches or less) mines. The lower-seam heights confine mine workers to their knees as they perform their daily tasks such as installing roof bolts, delivering supplies, repairing belt, or cutting coal. Miners working in these lower seams often consider kneepads to be their only line of defense against knee injuries. However, healthy knees do not start and stop with kneepads. Other interventions such as changing postures, proper hygiene, and work station design may also be used to reduce mine workers? risks for developing knee injuries. Incorporating these and many other interventions into a mine worker?s ?way of life? is an important step to ensuring a long, healthy career and retirement. Keeping knees healthy is also a key aspect to reducing costs in low-seam mines as the industry battles rising health care costs, and training/recruitment of replacement workers is time-consuming and costly. Educating the workforce about the possible interventions to reduce knee injury risk is a primary objective for the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health?s (NIOSH) Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL). Therefore, NIOSH researchers, along with industry and academia, developed a training package to educate the mining community about some possible interventions beyond kneepads that may be used to help decrease knee injury rates. Increased awareness and simple changes are the first steps to reducing knee injuries.

This document, prepared for the U.S. Bureau of Mines Regional Mineral Assessment Program, presents data pertinent to the mineral resource assessment of the Needles 1° x 2° map quadrangle (excluding the Arizona portion), located in the Mojave Desert southeastern California. The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) mineral survey of the quadrangle, conducted from 1991 to 1993, was done to provide the minerals data necessary to support effective land use planning and resource decision making. To this end, this report (1) inventories historic and current mining activity, (2) inventories identified resources, (3) provides an economic analysis; of identified mineral resources and estimates their feasibility for development, (4) delineates areas of exploration and development potential based on current geological, geochemical, and geophysical information, (5) supplies information on land status, transportation networks, power supplies, water availability, and regulations, and (6) analyzes socio-economic impacts of potential mining. The Needles quadrangle is in the Basin and Range province of the southwestern United Van. The area is underlain by a lithologically and structurally complex Proterozoic crystalline basement of gneiss and granite that is overlain by sparse, scattered outcrops of deformed and metamorphosed Late Proterozoic and Paleozoic sedimentary sequences. Mesozoic granitic plutons, particularly in the western half of the quadrangle, intruded the basement and sedimentary rocks, resulting in metamorphism and deformation responsible for the formation of high-grade gneisses and mylonitic rocks (core complex) in the eastern part of the quadrangle. Voluminous Tertiary volcanism unconformably overlie some older sequences. The structure of the area is dominated by Basin and Range extensional block faulting; in the eastern part of the area, block faulting is accompanied by widespread low-angle detachment faulting associated with core complex development.
