THE petroleum engineers have the conference habit. They drop in, thresh things over, and drop out. No time is wasted. So it was at the Fort Worth meeting of the Petroleum Division, Thursday and Friday, Oct. 8 and 9; headquarters, Blackstone Hotel. Associate Chairman Albertson arrived the morning of the 7th, to tie in any loose ends of the technical program. S. M. Greenidge, chairman of the local committee, checked the arrangements with his committeemen at a luncheon that noon. By mid-afternoon the next day's attendance was anybody's guess-there were no noses to count. But when the gavel sounded Thursday morning 175 members and guests were present, also the official A.I.M.E. party consisting of President Lovejoy, Secretary Parsons, and George Otis Smith. Shortly after adjournment Friday afternoon all but a handful had vamoosed, lit out, disap¬peared. But, in the meantime, it was a grand conference, attendance maximum every session, and the discussion fast and furious. The discussion came from all over the floor, sometimes as good-natured sniping, sometimes in long volleys that were almost fatal to the reporter. Everyone knew his subject and few there were who had nothing to say.

From 1990 to 1996, 16 states reported 92 injuries from falls of roof, rib or face in the more than 90 underground stone mines in the United States (Fig.1). Missouri, Pennsylvania and Kentucky accounted for 48% of the total number of injuries (Fig. 2). Of this total, 11 miners were killed. Of the 11 fatalities, 10, or 91%, were associated with unrecognized loose or failed rock within the roof beam. Additionally, unrecognized roof beam failures resulted in a majority of the falls of ground injuries occurring in underground US stone mines from1990 to 1996. This number is not large in magnitude. But a workforce of fewer than 2,000 miners makes for a high fatal-accident rate. The severity of the typical fall-of-ground injury is, in general, very high. About three-fifths of all roof, face and rib fall injuries were designated by the US Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) as some kind of lost time accident. MSHA assigns each accident a severity value from one to six. A one represents a fatality, a two, a permanent disability and three, a lost time accident (Fig. 3).

The amount of airborne respirable dust generated from break- age of different coals varies widely. This research was conducted to identify the facets of airborne respirable dust liberation from the coal product. Laboratory crushing experiments were conducted on a range of low to high volatile bituminous coals to investigate the various factors influencing airborne respirable dust generation. Bituminous coal samples from 8 mines (5 U.S. and 3 Polish) were uniformly prepared and processed through a double roll crusher located in a low air velocity wind tunnel. Experimental factors studied included inherent coal seam constituents, specific energy of crushing, product size characteristics, dust cloud electrostatic field, and specific quantity of airborne respirable dust generated. The results of this investigation build upon previously published results, which indicated that a combination of several factors are associated with the generation of airborne respirable dust. One factor involved is the effect of coal rank, described by the inherent moist fuel ratio, on the product size characteristics, defined by Schuhmann size function parameters. However, since coals of high moist fuel ratio (high rank) are generally more extensively cleated, it is suggested in the present work that the degree of cleating is directly responsible for the quantity of respirable-sized particles produced in the crushed product material for eastern U.S. coals. This is implied by the relationship of ash content and at least one mineral constituent (pyrite, determined from pyritic sulfur analysis) to the percentage of airborne respirable dust. To validate this hypothesis, a description is offered that is based on known coal petrography. Another key factor is the effect of air dry loss moisture in the coal seam on the breakage-induced electrostatic field of airborne dust. The air dry loss moisture factor appears to control the amount of airborne respirable dust that is liberated from the product. The resultant effect of these factors is that different percentages of coal particles smaller than 10 µm are dispersed as airborne respirable dust with a well-defined peak in the normalized airborne respirable dust for a narrow range of air dry loss moisture - ash ratios. A clear delineation of coals, based on well-known proximate analysis characteristics, that generate the most respirable dust appears to be possible. Piles extending through soft soil near the ground surface will have a relatively low lateral stiffness. As a result, lateral serviceability limits may control the number of piles required for foundation support. Improving near surface soil properties may significantly increase lateral pile stiffness and thus reduce the number of piles required for the foundation. A series of analyses have been performed to assess the depth and lateral extent of soil improvement required to significantly increase lateral foundation stiffness. Analyses consisted of Winkler type beam on a spring foundation and three-dimensional, linear elastic finite element analyses. Results from the analyses show that lateral pile foundation stiffness can be doubled when soil properties are improved to a depth and lateral extent of 5 pile diameters. In order to achieve this increase in foundation stiffness, the modified/improved soil modulus of elasticity needed to be approximately 5 times greater than adjacent unimproved soil. This magnitude of soil improvement over such a limited lateral extent suggests that limited soil improvement can result in more economical foundation designs at soft soil sites.

In early 1993, the Piney River quarry owned and operated by the Blue Ridge Stone Corporation of W W? Boxley received a series of complaints from the owners of a 130 year-old historic farmhouse that had been converted into a bed and breakfast establishment. Since the distance from the quarry to the farmhouse was substantial, a unique method of seismic data acquisition was utilized to determine if perceived blast effects were caused by air blast or low amplitude, low frequency ground vibration.

Working in New York City has become the graveyard of many Foundation Contractors. Varying subsurface conditions require Foundation Contractors to be aware of the conditions at each particular site and have the knowledge and equipment to successfully complete the project. Looking back, we can see that many of the methods and much of the equipment that were commonly used in the past have been replaced with newer methods and equipment, but sometimes the old methods prove to be the most reliable. This paper will describe examples of varying conditions and construction methods in sites that are close to each other. It will also show different construction problems that are encountered when working adjacent to existing subway structures, when excavating below the foundations of adjacent structures and when ground water is encountered.

Casting, cooling and crushing/sieving of ferroalloys has followed a well-established pattern in the whole ferroalloys industry for many years. Usually liquid metal or alloys are cast into flat open moulds of various shapes and forms, and after solidification the product is removed from such mould to further cool down to a temperature where subsequent handling steps are feasible. Common to all mechanical product fractioning is the generation of dust and fine size material with lower product value. For almost 10 years, Bécancour Silicon has investigated alternative roads to improve technology and/or reduce or solve problems related to those disadvantages. Since 1995 Bécancour Silicon operates a special silicon granulation plant targeted to product for the chemical treatment/conversion of silicon for silicones production. Prior to the development of the granulation process, various systems had been evaluated, among others the vibrating casting bed, now in operation elsewhere but judged inappropriate because of the tapping volumes to be handled at Bécancour Silicon and other disadvantages. After evaluation of all aspects of heat transfer, radiation, and conductivity in relation to transfer media and within the product, a novel system was designed and built.

This paper evaluates the effect of longwall mining on a cluster of unconventional shale gas wells located in a district barrier pillar between a current longwall panel and the future panel north of the barrier pillar. A cluster of 19 unconventional shale gas wells have been drilled and 5 additional gas wells have been proposed in the barrier pillar. The closest gas well is 25.6 m (84 ft) to the current panel tailgate and 26.2 m (86 ft) to the tailgate of the future panel north of the barrier pillar. The rib-to-rib width of the barrier pillar is 57.9 m (190 ft). The distance between the two gas wells across the barrier pillar is 6.1 m (20 ft). The pillars in the current tailgate are on 22.9-m (75-ft) and 32.0-m (105-ft) centers, and the pillars in the tailgate of the panel north of the barrier will be on 22.9-m (75- ft) and 36.6-m (120-ft) centers. The two longwall panels adjacent to the barrier pillar are 475.5-m (1,560-ft) wide. The overburden depth at the shale gas well site is 321.6 m (1,055 ft). This paper is an attempt to outline the emergence of Augered Cast-ln-Place piles as one of the more economical types of foundation for supporting high-rise buildings and heavily loaded structures recently constructed in the flood plains in and around the Greater Pittsburgh area. To understand the process of selecting foundation types, it is important to understand the general geology of the area and past construction activities that have taken place in the flood plains, especially along the riverbanks, during the last century. The first part of this paper presents a brief description of the general geology of the area; the second part of the paper concentrates on the historical evolution of the use of deep foundations and selected case histories; and the last part presents the results of load tests on large diameter Augered Tremie Concrete (ATC) Piles placed in sandy alluvium which suggests a much larger load-carrying capacity of these piles and also provides an insight into their future application. 2.0 GENERAL GEOLOGY 2.1 Soil Overburden Most of the high rise buildings in the Central Business District as well as along the North Shore and South Side of Pittsburgh are situated in the flood plain at the confluence of the Allegheny River and the Monongahela River where their combined flow forms the Ohio River. The flood plain consists of unconsolidated deposits of Quaternary age that overlie the bedrock of Pennsylvanian age. These deposits are called alluvium or valley fill, and include moderately to poorly sorted clay, silt, sand, gravel and some boulders. Their thickness varies from zero at the edges of the valley to about 80 feet towards the rivers (Figure 1).

It is well documented that a significant amount of the new PGM (Platinum Group Minerals) production that is coming on stream now, and over the next few years, is to come from the UG-2 reef. Clearly the reservations, or perhaps the perceived reservations, attached to the processing of this ore are no longer there. What were the metallurgical issues that delayed the exploitation of the PGM values from this reef? Traditional furnaces treating Merensky concentrates were not able to accept the concentrate produced from a UG-2 plant due to the relatively high chromite content of this product. The chromite reports to an insoluble spinel phase that accretes in the furnace, resulting in the necessity to shutdown and dig the furnace out periodically. This was clearly not an attractive economic option, so producers stayed away from it in the early days. The Merensky ore had all higher base metal credits anyway, and you needed them to get a matte fall, so there was no driving force to look seriously at the UG-2 reef. Platinum demand at this time could be easily met from the Merensky ore, so the motivation to tackle more complex ores was not there. The low price of PGMs meant that these operations were not particularly profitable and there was little effort directed at improving the operations. Concentrators were generally not run very efficiently and the emphasis was on cost reduction through increasing milling rates.

SOME notes on the works of the Electrolytic Refining and Smelting Company of Australia will no doubt be of interest to members of the Institute, more especially as much of the work is new to Australasia. As many of the members who may read this paper have not been in a position to visit works of this kind, and are consequently not thoroughly acquainted with all the operations carried on, the author has taken the liberty, in some cases, to enter into explanation which would otherwise be unnecessary. The works are situated at Port Kembla (New South Wales), about fifty miles south of Sydney, and are approachable both by rail and water. The Government has recently built a low-level jetty upwards of five hundred feet long, and intends installing at an early date an electrically operated portable crane to facilitate the handling of material to and from the boats. This will mean: a considerable reduction in the length of time that boats are laid up at the jetty. There are also under construction two breakwaters, which, when complete, will materially assist shipping operation...

"In January 1983, Gibraltar Mines Ltd. started an exploratory program on Column Flotation with hopes of improving performance of the Molybdenum Cleaning circuit. The encouraging results led to a column test trial in the Bulk Copper Cleaner circuit where the test unit has per¬formed well. A program was undertaken to understand the mechanics of column operation. A year and a half later, Gibraltar is considering the replacement of existing Bulk Copper and Moly Cleaning flotation cells with a fully computer con¬trolled Column Flotation circuit.BRIEF SUMMARY OF TESTWORKInitial testwork was done with a home made 20 inch diameter x 31 foot high column, equipped with a doppler flow-meter at the tail line and automatic level conrol. This loop maintained constant level in the column by throttling the tail valve. This column was placed in a variety of locations around the Moly circuit as shown on Figure 1 a, b. Test re¬sults indicated that the column could achieve much higher grades than the conventional cells, but recovery wise, the performance was low. Spillages from overloaded pump boxes were a common frustration during this time.Column control strategy was reviewed; and, in light of information received from McGill University, changed to conform with the methods that had been employed by D. Wheeler, of the Column Co. of Canada4 and Gaspe Copper Mines3.The column was tested replacing a portion of the bank, figure lc. The results obtained were more or less equal to the circuit. However, as we had Nitrogen gas connected to the column and not the regular cells, the column was kept in service. With the use of Nitrogen in the column, the usual copper depressant, Sodium Cyanide could be replaced with Sodium Hydrosulphide, hence lower operating cost.As time went on, a 10 inch diameter column was added in series to re-treat the concentrate of the 20 inch diameter column with hopes that the copper content would decrease from 0.6% down to 0.3% in order to save on subsequent leach¬ing costs. So far, results indicate there has been some im-provement, hut we are not achieving 0.3% copper. (See figure 1d)."

Eco-Efficient Gravity Separation Solutions in India Sustainable development and social responsibility issues are a principal aspect of mineral processing operations around the world. With the need for more environmentally effective technologies, some gravity separation systems have provided eco-efficient mineral processing solutions in places where it is not otherwise viable because of lack of fresh water or for other environmental reasons. Advanced spiral separation technologies developed in Australia offer a cost effective and environmentally viable way to process minerals. In particular, we review recent case studies of spiral plants commissioned in India where environmentally sustainable solutions to design problems included the use of spirals operated with sea water and the use of high capacity (HC) spirals to provide low consumption of energy and materials and a reduced plant footprint. This paper evaluates the performance of various spiral plants in India and how critical environmental issues which affect the overall viability of wet concentrating processes where resolved.

Ground calcium carbonate (GCC) and chemically precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) have become important mineral-based commodities in recent years. GCC manufacturing generally requires high purity and high brightness deposits of marble, chalk or limestone as the stone source. PCC usually uses limes made from lesser quality limestone deposits. GCC products have a wide span of particle size, with a d50 size ranging from sub micrometers to as large as several inches such as those used in landscaping. PCC products are typically limited to less than 10 µm (1,250 mesh). Each PCC product has a narrowly distributed size range. GCC and PCC products tend to have higher levels of whiteness com-pared with other traditional filler and extenders, such as kaolin and talc. Published statistics of GCC production volume often vary due to the exclusion of certain size range GCC products. According to Roskill’s latest estimate, world GCC capacity was believed to exceed 56 Mt (62 millionst) during 2004 for all grades.

The performance of a 12.7 cm hydrocyclone was investigated by considering the effect of design variables (diameters of the vortex finder and apex) and operating variables (pressure drop and solids content of the feed) at a medium feed solids concentration of mixed minerals. Cut-size was found to be the most important parameter in hydrocyclone design and operation. The effect of feed pressure in reducing hydrocyclone cut-size is less pronounced at medium feed solids concentration with a mixed mineral feed. The choice of vortex finder diameter and apex diameter becomes more sensitive at medium feed solids concentrations. The effect of feed solids concentration in increasing the cut-size becomes less marked at higher concentrations. Predictions of an empirical model were found to be in good agreement with experimental data. Comparison of results obtained from the model with those predicted by theoretically derived models showed the latter to be more promising, with the turbulent two-phase model giving closer agreement with the experimental data

In fact, the language in The West Virginia Energy Act governing subsidence mirrors that written in the Federal Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act as well as other states' statutes. Certain legal and administrative issues, how¬ever, combine to make West Virginia's regulation of surface subsidence a singular approach.

Various styles of gold mineralisation pose problems during sampling because of their complex gold grade distribution and presence of coarse gold. Effective sampling and sample preparation forms the basis of resource estimates. The design of a sampling and assaying protocol must be based on a thorough understanding of the mineralisation in question, which should include consideration of gold particle size and mass distribution. The proportion of coarse gold within samples has a profound effect on the requirements for sample preparation and assaying. Choice of preparation procedure and assay type is of critical importance if sampling errors are to be minimised. Traditional fire assays, using small charge sizes, often understate assays gained from large charge sizes and techniques such as screen fire assay and LeachWELL. Proper application of the Theory of Sampling reduces errors during collection, preparation and assaying. A quality control/quality assurance program must be implemented and critically assessed. A case study from the Ballarat mine is presented, which is characterised by substantial quantities of coarse-gold hosted in quartz veins. Diamond core drilling is the key input into resource delineation. A number of different sampling and assay options have been trialled over the recent project history.
