Man’s search beneath the earth for minerals has always required light, and the devices used to provide illumination have been both innovative and unusual —from stone vessels holding fat and a wick of grass or fiber to a shower of sparks produced by a thin steel disc. While the date when lamps were first used in mines is unknown, Greek and Roman records from 3000 BC definitely mention their use in underground mines. Early Remans most likely used a lamp similar to the one depicted at right. Over the ages, various types of devicives and methods of illumination have been tried and used. One interesting scheme for underground light was to reflect sunlight down the shaft and along drifts using mirrors or other reflective materials. Bunches of resinous wood were also used for underground lighting in many parts of England. In the mid-18th century, the speding mill was developed in England. It worked by rapidly turning a thin steel disc against a flint, causing a shower of sparks to appear. The light produced was uncertain, highly variable, and unsafe in gaseous environments. In Europe, an open pan-type hanging oil lamp was developed and used in some operations in the 1700s. This type of lamp had one opening for a wick and a second opening for refilling the oil reservoir. The lamps were embellished with goad luck charms – a good luck rooster was used in many parts of Europe while a frog and “gluck-auf” were used in Germany. These lamps were introduced in Mexican mines, and a few have found their way into the southwest US. By 1850, a small wick lamp known as the lard-oil lamp, which resembled a tea pot, was invented in Scotland. These lamps were fueled with grease from a packing house –lard, bacon grease, or tallow. Whale oil was also used. Many improvements were made on these lamps, such as the use of windshields and the attachment of miners’ candle-holdm to support the lamp. While these lamps were handy and inexpensive to operate, they were dangerous because their large flame could ignite support timbers or other flammable materials. Miners from the United Kingdom brought this type of lamp into the US. Domestic producers of oil wick lamps were primarily located in Hazleton, PA; What Cheer, IA; Pittsburgh, PA; and Frostburg, IN. "Gold cyanidation kinetics which are often limited in commercial operations by the rate of oxygen dissolution from gas bubbles into the slurry, are discussed. Emerging technologies for improving the rate of oxygen dissolution are compared and the gas efficiency, energy use and operating performance of inverted cones and a device based on a jet diffuser are examined. The effect of solids loading is also reviewed and a relationship between operating parameters and the kilograms oxygen dissolved per kilowatt-hour is presented.Inverted cones are shown to create slurry settling problems at high gas flow rates and surface tension lowering agents are shown not to greatly improve the overall rates of oxygen dissolution.The novel jet diffuser technology operates at a range of gas to liquid ratios that improves its energy use over conventional technology and the performance of a number of designs are discussed.Gas efficiencies as high as 35% were observed with the novel diffusers at 40 cm diffuser immersion and are expected to increase at greater immersions. Energy use of 1.8 kg 02 I kWh were estimated for prototype full size diffusers operating at 100 cm immersion. "Particle composition distribution is an essential feature of materials processed by physical separation methods. The amenability to segregate a feed material in a concentrate and a tailings stream depends to a large extent on what is called usually the ""liberation"" of the various mineral phases that are present in an ore. In fact the energy consumed in crushing and grinding has the major justification of producing particles that are as close as possible to monominerallic. Monophasic particles are able to reveal physical differences in mineral properties that make their separation possible. For many years, various authors have insisted on the concept of liberation, without noting that, in practice, it can be a pure concept which does not lead to measurements or predictions. The present paper insists on the concept of particle composition distribution, in which the complete distribution is the information to be obtained, and not the ""liberation·· of various phases, just like for particle size distribution, the complete distribution is an objective commonly desired, and not one or two values representing the coarse or fine fraction.2. The North-South Bypass Tunnel is a new $AUD1.5 billion underground traffic route in Queensland, Australia, a project of the Brisbane City Council. The tunnel is approximately 5.2 km long, bypassing the Central Business District, and is adjacent to and below major buildings and services. Road tunnel alignment issues include the complex southern connections to the Pacific Motorway and the design of ramps to the east and the north. A review of road tunnel alignment criteria and accident data for Australian and overseas tunnels, similar to the proposed NSBT, are discussed. The key findings of this review lead to a rationalization of the traditional tunnel cross sectional width allocation. The road alignment design elements adopted for the NSBT are also discussed. The NSBT route crosses beneath the Brisbane River. Geotechnical investigations and hydrogeological modelling are described. The crossing has a fundamental impact on the alignment and the tunnelling methods. The tunnelling methods to be adopted and the tunnel support are described. The geotechnical investigations and hydrogeology analysis culminate in the selection of a single shielded TBM for the reference design. These outcomes are related to complex issues of hydrogeology and contaminated groundwater. These are discussed in detail.

The mining industry worldwide is currently facing a significant restructuring process. In most underground mines, widespread mechanization of the mining processes increases production while reducing staff numbers. At the same time, mining depths as well as the lateral spread of the mine workings are increasing. This ever-changing mining environment requires sophisticated solutions for the design and operation of underground mines. In fact, a reduced number of mining engineers is taking responsibility for everincreasing mine operations. This applies not only to the excavation of the minerals, but also to all other aspects of the mining operation, including health and safety, disaster management, and mine rescue organization. Most mining engineering graduates entering the industry lack experience in mine emergency management. Young engineer trainees must learn mine emergency management and rescue work in addition to their normal training experience on the job. Often, and unfortunately, emergency and rescue training at different mining companies is not carried out to the highest level and standard and with the best possible training outcomes. The tasks and challenges a young engineer faces while being trained in a new position do not leave much room for additional training in mine rescue and emergency management. At the same time, experienced, ?old hands? are retiring and cannot easily be replaced due to limited graduation numbers. Strategies are being developed at mining universities worldwide to train mining engineering students in handling mine emergency situations and to provide hands-on experience for managing potential accident and disaster scenarios underground. Two of these strategies, from the USA and from Central Europe, are presented in this paper. These specific strategies have to be seen under special consideration of the local and regional boundary conditions, but might serve as case studies for mining schools and universities in other countries.

The increased consumption and importation of fluorspar and cryolite (1)3/ in recent years, and especially the addition of fluorine compounds to drinking water in the United States, have aroused renewed interest in the properties of such compounds and possible health hazards incident to their use. It has been suggested that the issuance of a revision and elaboration of Information Circular 7311, The Hazards of Hydrogen Fluoride Poisoning in the Mineral and Allied Industries, which hay been out of print for some time, would be opportune. Fluorine minerals have been known since the Middle Ages. Fluorine was isolated in 1886 by Moisson (2).

Paper presented at the Drillex '90 conference held in London, 5 April 1990. Two drilling techniques are employed - guided longhole drilling and reverse circulation coring - for underground longhole exploration of the coal reserves and the fault structures that affect them. These are complementary to, or replacements for, surface boreholes, underground development drivages and seismic techniques. The developments of the drilling techniques and some case histories are presented in detail.

The paper is introduced with a general statement claiming recognition that mining ventures are important to human well-being but that these need to be justified against the environmental changes that they bring about. The various factors that need to be considered are cited followed by an historical review of mining activities. The various environmental issues are discussed under three headings; socio-economic, physical and biological, prior to reviewing the world's demand for minerals including fossil fuels. In conclusion guidelines for appraising mining ventures relative to environmental changes that may occur, are given.

With a particular electrode configuration, and a particular combination of electrode voltage and roll speed, a relatively small increase in electrode voltage, or a relatively small decrease in roll speed, resultsin a marked improvement in the separation of zircon from ilmenite. In general, fine minerals can be separated using a higher roll speed, or a lower electrode voltage, than is required to separate coarse minerals. The ionizing electrode should be reasonably close to the point at which mineral is fed on to the roll, and nearer to the roll than the non-ionizing electrode. The optimum conditions for the separation of zircon from ilmenite may not apply for the separation of other non-conductors from other conductors.INTRODUCTIONAlthough the high tension separators used in the Australian beach sand industry are efficient, this efficiency has been gained very largely by a process of trial and error, and not by a systematic study of the effects of changes in the operating variables. The optimum roll speed for a particular electrode position and electrode voltage, and the optimum electrode voltage for a particular roll speed and electrode position, can both be determined quite readily. It is not so simple to determine the optimum electrode position for a particular electrode voltage and roll speed. The reason for this is that the electrode used in high tension separators consists of two parts-an ionizing and a non-ionizing electrode respectively. The angular and radial positions of these electrodes, relative to the feed roll and to each other, affect the behaviour of conductors and non-conductors to varying degrees.

Scope for Thermal Recovery in Shell's Heavy Oil Fields in Venezuela The main heavy oil reservoirs on the East coast of Lake Maracaibo (Fig. I), known as "Bolivar Coast", initially contained some 20 billion bbl of oil in place with gravities in the range of 10 to 15° API. The current total production rate is about 400,000 B/D. Since the recovery to date is on an average only 12.5 percent of the initial oil in place, these fields offer a vast potential for secondary recovery methods. The reservoirs are characterized by moderate depth (generally 1,000 to 3,000 ft; maximum 5,000 ft), good formation properties such as net oil sand thickness (50 to 300 ft), high porosity (30 to 40 percent) permeability (1 to 3 darcies) and oil saturation (initially about 80 percent) and high oil viscosity (100 to 10,000 cp in situ), all of which are favorable for the application of thermal recovery processes. Since 1957, steam drive, steam "soak" and underground combustion have been tested or are being tested in this area.1-3 This paper deals with a major steam drive test in the Tia Juana field. The test was commenced in Sept., 1961, on the basis of encouraging results of laboratory experiments and pilot field tests, which will be discussed briefly. Early Laboratory Investigation of the Steam Drive Process In 1956 a series of model experiments was carried out in the Koninklijke/Shell Laboratorium, Amster- dam, to investigate the displacement of heavy oil by steam.' The prototype studied was a horizontal, un-consolidated heavy oil reservoir, subjected to a linear steam drive. The model, representing a slab from this reservoir along the main flow direction, consisted of a steel tube filled with oil-saturated sand, provided with layers of rock at the top and bottom to simulate conductive heat losses to cap and base rock. Lateral heat losses, perpendicular to the main flow direction, were minimized by insulating the sides of the model. Heat flow and viscosity and gravity forces were scaled by taking the steam injection rate and sand permeability inversely proportional to the geometric reduction factor of the model, and using materials (oil, steam, cap rock, etc.) identical with those of the prototype. The main feature of the process was a frontal displacement mechanism that was observed within wide ranges of injection pressure and rate, oil viscosity, initial oil saturation and sand permeability. The high stability of this front can be attributed to the high volumetric steam flow rates, combined with the reduction in oil viscosity. High recoveries were obtained due to the low residual oil saturation of about 15 percent in the zone swept by steam. The latter value pertains to the specific test conditions (heavy oil, uncon-solidated sand) and may be lower for light oil, due to the effects of steam distillation. The labour question is one that has caused mine managers much thought and anxiety and is likely to continue to do so as long as human beings exist. The difficulty is to devise some arrangement whereby the interests of miner and mine ownerare identical. Mines cannot be worked without capital, and capital is no good without labour, yet, though both have the mine in common, their interests are not exactly the same. Some men are happy so long as they can scrape through by exerting themselves as little as possible, but capitalists do not work mines for charity, they want some return for their money.Where a large number of men are employed there are bound to be examples of all sorts, good and bad, and it is because one cannot depend on all, that different methods of employment have to be adopted. Which method is selected depends to a great extent on the labour market, local conditions, nature of the ore and the way in which it occurs.A big step towards success is obtained by securing the services of good bosses, not only those who know how work should be done, but men who have a knowledge of human nature. It is a big mistake to be too lenient with a man, also to be unnecessarily harsh. The first stage of the development of a new modified 201-type low nickel austenitic stainless steel is described in this paper. The alloy is intended for use as a structural alloy, and so requires a yield strength >400MPa as well as acceptable weldability and toughness. The low nickel content will give a lower material cost in comparison to more conventional austenitic grades, and the processing route is required to be similar to that of Type 304 to keep the processing cost low. The base alloy was designed using empirical methods developed for stainless steel, and the properties of the base alloy were verified using a range of small-scale melts. The base alloy had a 0.2% proof strength of ~320-400MPa, and so it is planned to use V additions of ~0.15% to bring about precipitation strengthening in the hot rolled condition, so raising the alloy?s proof strength above the 400MPa minimum.

The application of simple methods of statistical analysis, coupled with geostatistical analysis and geographic information systems, can only summarise and give an outline of the spatial distribution of the parameters measured. Spatial analysis of the components or factors calculated, through principal component analysis or factor analysis, allows assessment of the geographical distribution of the dominant processes contributing to soil composition and/or contamination. Neither of these tools, however, distinguishes between the different sources of pollution. The application of canonical correlation to the data, driven by expert appraisal of the potential pollution sources, allows their quantitative and spatial assessment while GIS provides the environment in which to organise and present the results. The methodology is illustrated by its application to soil-contamination data from the Lavrio area in Greece, where silver-bearing orebodies have been mined for more than 25 centuries

The new euphoria in diamond exploration brings with it a need to understand the challenges that new projects can face in different stages of the development and risks that the commercial outcomes from the new projects fall short of expectations. In many cases, the problems are related to a poor understanding of the technical risks and a failure to adequately address them during the course of investigation. Failure to evaluate all disciplines to the same level of certainty could lead to a situation where the important issues are only identified late in the project development, resulting in costly delays and financial difficulties. The diamond projects located in Canadian Arctic, with its challenging environmental, geographical, social, political and geological contexts are especially sensitive to the high variability of the outcome. This presentation highlights some of the technical aspects that could be the leading sources of risk in diamond projects and could ultimately result in inappropriate mine designs, reducing the economic outcome.

THE choice of a pumping plant for the drainage of a mine is a matter of such importance that it is obvious that in a short paper it is impossible to go fully into the reasons governing the adoption of any particular type. The author, therefore, proposes to briefly discuss the methods.in vogue, and, as far as possible, to point out the advantages and disadvantages of the numerous systems. The probiem is of extreme importance to the mining engineer, and it appears that in the past sufficient thought has not been given to this branch, as shown by the numerous failures which are encountered.When water is met with in large quantities, the development of the mine depends upon the pumping plant to such a great extent that the most careful consideration should be given before deciding on any particular scheme for drainage. The pumpingplant in a mine should be looked. upon in the light of an insurance policy, and should be treated as such, care being taken that the premium is as low as possibl~, and to ensure this it is necessary that the most efficient plant be secured. Local conditions play such an important part ill the design of a plant that no hard and fast rules can be laid down. Four significant soil nail wall projects in the eastern United States were recently completed with a combined area of 175,000 square feet of finished shotcrete surface. These projects required the use of innovative design and construction methods in order to address various challenges, including slide-prone back slope materials, perched water, highly erodible rock materials, curved wall alignments, very tight construction tolerances and unexpected subsurface conditions. Special focus is given to issues such as bench excavation, soil nail installation methods, shotcrete mix design, anticipated shotcrete quantities, shotcrete nozzlemen qualifications and weather conditions, in order to provide a lessons-learned database for future soil nail wall design and inspector considerations. These projects also underscore the importance of design engineer and soil nail wall contractor qualifications as well as effective communication with the owner.

Over the past two years Anglo Platinum made use of the specialist skills of Cyest Corporation to develop a Mine Optimization Tool (MOT) to enhance the current suite of in house mine planning tools and processes. The application was built in a multidimensional modelling environment developed by Cyest called CarbonL. This has allowed complex modelling that is transparent to the business users and therefore is not prone to the ?black box? approach that generally exists with these types of complex tools. The purpose of the MOT is to have an integrated software tool that can schedule production activities by half level for a shaft complex, while at the same time integrating the economics concomitant with that schedule. The tool allows the user to configure all activities relevant to the selected mining method, define the mine design parameters and geological parameters, define scheduling rules and then schedule all activities. This allows the user to test various production strategies and schedules very quickly and easily in terms of shaft value, costs and revenue profiles, labour complement and production ramp up so as to determine the option that best fits the overall strategy. This allows assessments of multiple scenarios in a relatively short period of time, after which only the best option is taken forward for graphic design and scheduling. This paper discusses briefly the rationale behind the Mine Optimisation Tool and the underlying workings of the modules that comprise the tool. It also covers the life cycle of this tool from the original prototype through to the final Mine Optimisation Tool software and discusses the positioning of the final tool.
