Thiourea is a promising reagent for gold extraction especially from refractory ores that cannot be treated by traditional cyanidation route. In this study recovery of gold from thiourea leaching solutions was investigated by direct electrowinning. The electrolysis cell consisted of a carbon flow-through cathode and a lead anode. The anodic and cathodic compartments were separated by a membrane. Galvanostatic mode was chosen for operation of the cell. Factors affecting recovery efficiency such as cathode thickness, linear flowrate, current intensity, thiourea and gold concentrations were investigated. The influence of some species in solution on efficiency and selectivity of recovery was investigated. Gold recovery reached 99% but current efficiency was lower than 10%. The complex formed with ferric ion and formamidine disulfide are reduced before gold-thiourea complex. Thiourea consumption occurred during leaching mainly by oxidation and reaction with dissolved copper.

The counter-current jarosite acid wash circuit presently in operation in the zinc plant produces a combined jarosite plus Pb/Ag residue which is discarded. Extensive pilot-scale testwork, and some past in-plant operational experience, has shown that the zinc plant can be easily reconfigured to produce two residues during periods of high silver feeds and/or prices. Plant.optimized circuit configurations are available for silver recovery to a Pb/Ag residue and are in use for the prevention of Pb/Ag-jarosite formation in both the neutral and high-acid leaching circuits. Silver in the zinc plant undergoes several changes in state as it proceeds through these circuits. The roaster calcine is ~3:1 silver sulfate: silver metal, with metallic silver mainly as micro-Inclusions In an aluminosilicate phase. In neutral leach residue, the majority is as silver sulfide or Pb/Ag/Zn-sulfide coatings on unroasted sphalerite grains, with minor Pb/Ag-jarosite and some residual metallic silver in unreacted alumina-silicate grains. In high-acid leach residue, silver occurs as Se-rich silver sulfide particles in sulfur/jarosite ball aggregates, as silver sulfate impregnations in silica-gel masses and in solid solution in Pb/K/Zn~jarosite. Silver concentrations in solution range from 20 to 60 ppb.

In CaC12-CaF 2 System, we studied the electrode process and discharge mechanism of preparation of Al-Ca alloys by fused salt electrolysis with CaO as raw material. The change of back electromotive force after adding CaO was measured by continuous pulse oscillograph method and the discharge process mechanism was also investigated by cyclic voltammetry. The finial results indicate that back electromotive force decreases by 0.6V after CaO of 1 % is added and there was a peak of oxidation current ahead of the potential at which the negative chlorine ions precipitated. According to thermodynamic calculation, it was determined that current peak was caused by the CO2 produced by 0 2 - ionic discharge due to CaO addition.

Magma Metals Company commissioned a 3000 tpd Outokumpu flash smelting furnace in July 1988. Through September 1992 the PSP has smelted a first campaign record 4.1 million tons of concentrate. This paper discusses modifications made to the original process equipment to overcome design flaws as well as future design changes currently under consideration.

"Near-net-shape casting is an important area of research in the iron and steel industry today. Among the near-net-shape casting processes, the single-belt caster seems to be the most promising, since it is the only one that can achieve levels of productivity similar to those obtained with conventional continuous casting machines. One of the most important aspects in the single-belt casting is the feeding system used to deliver liquid metal over the belt. This system determines the velocity distribution and the levels of turbulence of the liquid metal and affects the quality of the strips. In the present work, a metal delivery system having a simple geometry was proposed. Using the CFD code CFX 5.6, a mathematical model to simulate three-dimensional turbulent fluid flow and heat transfer in that system has been developed. This model was used to analyze different configurations of the metal delivery system and the free surface shape of the fluid was also determined. A physical model of the feeding system was built and used to validate the predictions of the mathematical model. The fluid flow calculations have been validated by dye injection experiments and laser doppler anemometry. Measurements of the free surface levels have also been performed. These experiments provided supporting evidence for the predictions of the mathematical model.IntroductionTo maintain its competitiveness in the present market, the metallurgical sector, particularly the steelmaking companies, are developing new techniques of production. Some of these new processes are focussed on the strip casting technologies. Among these technologies, the SingleBelt process is considered the most interesting option, reducing the number of rolling steps and, consequently, the final cost of the product, especially the part associated to the energy consumption (fuel and/or electric energy). This process can also reach levels of productivity that can not be matched by other strip casting methods(1). One of the most important aspects concerning these new processes is related to the liquid metal delivery system. This system can have a significant effect on the final quality of the strips, since it determines the velocity distribution and the levels of turbulence of the liquid metal."

"In sheet metal forming process, the forming limit and strain distribution are governed by plastic instability and fracture following strain localization. It has been proved that the temperature gradient caused by plastic deformation as well as friction is one of the crucial factors to induce the strain localization in high-speed metal forming processes. In this paper, a numerical simulation of the sheet metal extrusion process has been conducted by using thermal-mechanical coupling finite element method. An improved mixed finite element method has been used to solve the large deformation elasto-plastic problem. In thermal phase, the transient heat transfer finite element method together with the Crank-Nicholson algorithm has been employed to determine the temperature field. Both the numerical results and the experimental observations reveal that the temperature gradient plays an important role in inducing the strain localization, which eventually leads to fracture failure in the sheet metal extrusion process.IntroductionSheet metal extrusion is such a process where the extrusion punch penetrates into one surface of the sheet metal material to let it extrude and flow towards the outlet of the die. This process can be used to produce protruding parts on a strip material. In engineering applications, the quality of the product is affected by many factors such as stress state, loading speed, material properties and lubrication condition. The research on failure mechanisms and improvement of formability in sheet metal forming processes by exploitation of differential thermal conditions has been of great interest recently [1-3]. It has been proved that the temperature gradient caused by plastic deformation, heat transfer, and friction between sheet and tools is one of crucial factors to affect 'the formability in high speed sheet metal forming processes [4]. In our previous study of sheet metal extrusion, it has been observed that plastic deformation is highly localized and some specimens are subjected to fracture failure in the form of crack propagation [5]. To understand this failure phenomenon, the effects of temperature gradients must not be ignored."

The morphological transition between columnar and equiaxed structures is an important solidification phenomenon frequently observed in castings, especially complex parts with varying cross-section, The mechanical properties and the occurrence of defects such as hot tears are strongly dependent on the structure formed in the casting. Hence, it is important to understand the conditions leading to columnar or equiaxed structures. Although extensive work has been done in modeling solidification systems, almost all of the existing models are based on the assumption that the structure formed in the casting is either purely columnar or purely equiaxed. Prediction of the columnar-equiaxed transition (CET) requires a solidification model which accounts for the formation of both columnar and equiaxed structures, along with related microscopic and macroscopic solidification phenomena. In this paper a CET model is presented which: (i) takes account of both columnar and equiaxed structures, (ii) accounts for macroscopic heat transfer coupled with microscopic phenomena such as nucleation, growth and microsegregation, (iii) satisfies solute conservation, and (iv) is easy to implement in commercial finite element and finite difference software. The proposed model predictions of CET have been validated with available experimental results for a uni-directional solidification of an aluminum-copper alloy. A sensitivity analysis has also been carried out to determine the effects of various parameters on the CET model predictions. The model is being extended to other alloy systems and more complex geometries. This work will be published in due course.

This symposium is dedicated to the lifetime achievements of Professor H.Y. Sohn. It covers the scientific fields, processing routes and investigation techniques in which Prof. Sohn has worked during his career and is based in the equally important three topical areas: Principles, Technologies, and Industrial practice. Professor Sohn was General Chair of the very first TMS Fall Extraction and Processing Symposium in 1983 in San Francisco which led to the Annual such symposia as this International symposium. Furthermore, the theme of that symposium was sulfide smelting, which is also included in this symposium. [ ] Professor Sohn was born in a beautiful dynastic capital Kaesung, Korea on August 21, 1941. He received his B.S. degree in 1962 from Seoul National University, M.Sc. in 1966 from the University of New Brunswick, Fredericton, N.B., Canada, and his Ph.D. degree in 1970 from theUniversity of California at Berkeley all in Chemical Engineering. After working as a Research Associate at the State University of New York at Buffalo and as a Research Engineer at Du Pont?s Engineering Technology Laboratory, Dr. Sohn joined the Department of Metallurgical Engineering at the University of Utah in 1974 and currently holds the ranks of Professor of Metallurgical Engineering and Adjunct Professor of Chemical Engineering.

"Mould filling simulations are powerful tools for optimizing the characteristics of castings. The robustness of calculational methods for mould filling simulations is generally tested in simple geometries. While a vertical plate has been used often for validation studies, this paper aims at mould filling simulations of a horizontal thin wall casting. Such castings exhibit a strong interaction between heat transfer (solidification), surface tension and gravitational force.The results are presented of a study to validate numerical simulations of mould filling phenomena in a thin wall horizontal casting. Solidification during mould filling is studied computationally. Velocities are measured using Particle Image Velocimetry.INTRODUCTIONIn foundry practice Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is being considered a promising tool to arrive at a better understanding of casting defects introduced during the mould filling period of a casting. The use of CFD is believed to be advantageous in predicting possible defect locations, pouring times, and the lowest possible casting temperature without the risk of cold shuts. In addition, CFD may be used to optimize pouring system geometries [1,2]. As opposed to experimental studies in, e.g., cold water models, CFD allows for the flexible modification of the casting geometry and the pouring system, and for the inclusion of physical effects such as solidification and heat transfer. Thus, a proper use of CFD may lead to a reduction of the casting rejection rate without expensive trial-and-error procedures, and to a decrease of production costs in foundries. Mould filling simulations take a special place in CFD, because a free surface tracking algorithm is required. Over the past decade methods, MAC [3] and SOLAVOF [4], have been extended to 3-D. The robustness of computational methods for mould filling simulations is generally tested in simple geometries [5,6]. While a vertical plate has been used often for validation studies, this paper concentrates at mould filling simulations of a horizontal thin wall casting. Thin wall horizontal castings exhibit a strong interaction between heat transfer (solidification), surfaces tension and gravitational force. The gravitational force in this setting is orthogonal to the plane of flow and has therefore no influence on the shape of the free surface in the plane of flow. Mould filling numerical methods and algorithms have been recently reviewed by Chen et al.[7]."

"For steel continuous castings, it is essential to control molten steel velocity at the meniscus, since the velocity is closely related to surface defects on the resultant products. Argon gas is supplied with molten steel into the mold through the submerged entry nozzle to prevent nozzle clogging. In this study, to investigate the influence of argon gas on molten steel flow, a numerical simulation was carried out by a two-phase model. Simulation results indicate that as argon gas bubbles ascend near the nozzle by their buoyancy, they induce the molten steel flow with them and resulted a meniscus molten steel flow from the nozzle to the narrow face of the mold. This flow direction is opposite to the case without argon gas. The calculated data are compared with the experimental data. The comparison shows generally good agreement between the measured and the calculated data. IntroductionIn a steelmaking process, molten steel carried by a ladle is first fed into a buffer vessel called tundish. From the tundish, it is then fed into a continuous casting mold. Molten steel solidifies gradually in the mold (the primary cooling zone) forming a solidified shell. As the solidified shell is just thick enough to support the molten steel at the mold exit, it is withdrawn through the mold by pinch rolls. It is progressively thicken as it is further cooled with water sprays in the secondary cooling zone. At the end of guide roll zone, completely solidified steel is cut into desirable lengths. Schematic view of a typical continuous casting is shown in Figure 1."

Laser Engineered Net-shaping (LENS TM) is an emerging manufacturing technique that ensures significant reduction of process time between initial design and final components. The fabrication of fully dense parts with appropriate properties using LENS TM process requires an in-depth understanding of the entire thermal behavior of process. In this paper, the thermal behavior during LENSTM processing of 316 stainless steel was studied both numerically and experimentally. Temperature distribution and gradient in the fabricated 316 stainless steel part were obtained by Finite Element Method (FEM) simulation. The numerical results are in good agreement with the experimental observations. The numerical method may be used to optirnize process parameters and predict the thermal response of LENSTM fabricated components. Regularities of cobalt and nickel distribution between slag and matte, slag and metallic alloy on the base of concepts on exchange reaction equilibrium are considered. It is shown that the distribution of cobalt and nickel in industrial processes approaches to equilibrium one. Oxysulphiae influence on the bahaviour of cobalt, nickel and sulphur is shown. The recommendations on conduction of the processes of smelting, converting and slag cleaning based on the analysis of the methods or" non : ferrous metal separation from iron are given.

The Search Minerals Foxtrot project in Labrador is a surface deposit enriched in the highly sought after heavy rare earth elements. Early metallurgical work investigated beneficiation of the rare earth content of the Foxtrot resource using flotation, gravity separation and magnetic separation. The concentrate was then processed by acid baking and water leaching to produce a REE leachate for purification and recovery. The Search Minerals Direct Extraction Process was developed through bypassing the beneficiation process and directly acid treating a coarse crushed ore material prior to water leaching. The result is a simple, low risk technical process for direct recovery. Concurrently, the treatment of the water leach solution was modified to produce a high grade (98.9% total rare earth oxide) product for refining.

The 15m high Inco flash furnace uptake was designed as a reaction chamber with the objective of destroying the H2S contained in the furnace off-gas by combustion with oxygen at about 1300°C. Until recently, the oxygen required for this purpose was injected through afterburners located at the bottom of the uptake. An undesirable side effect of this practice was the formation of build up accretions on the inside walls of the uptake. This buildup had a negative impact on both the furnace on line time and the control of the flash smelting process. In late 200 I, the afterburners were relocated to the roof of the uptake. As a result, about 80% of the uptake accretion buildup disappeared with obvious beneficial effects for the operation of the furnace. This paper discusses key flash smelting aspects that affect the operation of the flash furnace uptake such as the dusting rate, the formation of H2S in the freeboard of the furnace, and the impact of using coke to supply some of the heat required by the process. The mechanism of buildup formation and its dependence 'on uptake afterburners location are also examined. Prof. Yazawa's sulfide smelting thermodynamic relationships proved instrumental in understanding the conditions that influence the formation and the elimination of H2S and uptake buildup.

Alloy composite parts were made from powders by Selective Laser Sintering (SLS). SLS is a rapid prototyping process that uses data from CADICAMICAE systems to guide a laser beam and rapidly form 3-D prototype parts from powders without any part specific tooling. In this study, Bronze-Nickel parts made by SLS were studied for their mechanical properties. To make the parts structurally sound, SLS parts were further processed by conventional isothermal sintering, without loss of shape. The resultant densification and mechanical properties were studied and related to microstructures and P/M densification models. These results were then correlated to the SLS processing parameters.

Goethite is an important naturally occurring sorbent for divalent heavy metals and has often been used as a model compound in studies of adsorption on oxide mineral surfaces. Surface complexation modeling, surface spectroscopy, and electrochemical techniques have all been applied to goethite adsorption. Modeling studies have shown that usually several different sets of fitted parameters are equally successful in representing surface charging and adsorption data. Surface spectroscopic data are proving valuable in determining the nature of the surface sites, and refined models now incorporate structural information on interatomic distances and coordination numbers. Multisite surface complexation models can give very good fits to surface charging and adsorption data, but further improvements are needed to better represent surface reactions involving exchange of protons and divalent cations. Recent experimental and modeling studies on adsorption of divalent transition metals on goethite are described and the present status of the field is assessed.

Lime addition to acid mine drainage (AMD) leads to precipitation, predominantly of metal hydroxides and calcium sulfate, and is the benchmark for remediation by precipitation. Geo2 Limited of Melbourne, Australia has developed and patented a novel alternative precipitation scheme based on the formation of mixed valency, M(I1)-M(III), hydroxide sulfate salts. When the composition of AMD is appropriate, the Green Precipitate Process provides a useful and more effective alternative to conventional liming. The characteristics and utility of the Green Precipitate Process are described in terms of the underlying chemistry, and a case study where the Green Precipitate process outperforms conventional liming. A mobile pilot pipe reactor rig which was built by Geo2 to demonstrate the process, and used successfully in both Australia and the United States, is described.

"In order to prevent corner cracks on cast steel slab and bloom, solidification delay at the corners should be controlled at the proper level. For this purpose, controlling the heat flux from the molten steel to the solidified shell at corners is essential. In this paper, optimization of the submerged nozzle was studied based on flow and solidification analysis.First, for the slab caster, the submerged nozzle shape was optimized. The improved nozzle was tested in actual casting and completely succeeded in preventing corner cracks. It was clearly demonstrated that the solidification delay and the corner cracks were strongly affected by the spouting stream from the submerged nozzle.For the bloom caster, on the other hand, the setting angle of the nozzle was optimized. Numerical simulations demonstrated that the spouting stream from the nozzle causes solidification delay, impinging at the corners under electromagnetic stirring conditions. Optimization of the setting angle of the nozzle is a possible means to reduce the solidification delay at the corners for the bloom caster.Related to the numerical analysis of flow and solidification, the effect of the critical solid fraction at the tip of the dendrite structure on the solidification under electromagnetic stirring conditions was studied."

The quest for cleaner steel is driven by increasingly stringent requirements from the manufacturing and construction industries. Key issues are the occurrence and removal of inclusions; These are discussed in the context of the unit processes of deoxidation, refining, transfer and casting of molten steel. Process thermodynamics and kinetics are also discussed. Recent progresses achieved and problems yet to be solved are elaborated, and an integration of the unit processes into a system to produce extra clean, steels with better performance is presented.

We will briefly review the nickel market in 2003 and look forward to the supply demand balance for the next few years focusing in on the key factors influencing future price dynamics. On the supply side we will examine slated brownfield and greenfield expansions including the Norilsk factor and the small to mid-range 'supply creep'. We will also review the cost side of the industry and what to expect going forward. On the demand side, we will discuss the stainless steel and non-stainless demand, the China factor and the stainless steel scrap supply cycle. We will conclude by pinpinting where the market is on the current price cycle, and where we believe the mid-term direction is headed.
