Because of the nature of the breakage in the Barmac vertical spindle impactor, the 80% reduction ratio is very small, so that when an energy efficiency is calculated from Bond's method, it appears to be very low. However, the product size distribution contains a high proportion of fines. It is argued that the production of these fines accounts for the high energy consumption, and Bond's method is modified to account for this, by considering the crusher to be, effectively, a number of smaller crushers in parallel, each having a different reduction ratio.

The use of a woven wire-mesh screen as part of a flooded-bed dust-scrubbing system is very popular in the underground coal mining industry. It is used in combination with a demister (mist eliminator) to remove dust from the dust-laden air. A study was conducted to measure the pressure drop across a flooded-bed wire-mesh screen at different airflow rates in onephase (dry) and two-phase (wet) conditions. Two empirical relationships between pressure drop and air velocity were developed for dry and wet conditions, respectively. In both cases, the form of the empirical relationships was found to be similar to relationships given by Sabri Ergun for high velocity non-Darcy single and multi-phase flow through porous media. The experiments were repeated on a reduced-scale model of the wire-mesh screen, and the pressure-velocity relationships obtained from the full-scale prototype experiments were tested. The test results show validation of the full-scale empirical formulas on the small-scale model with an insignificant variation. This paper presents the empirical equations for pressure drop across the wire-mesh screen in dry and wet conditions. Researchers can use these equations as a tool to predict total pressure drops for wire-mesh screens of different scale sizes.

It is well known that processing of the high-silicon bauxites for obtaining alumina by the hydrochemical Bayer process is irrational due to the significant losses of alumina and alkali with red mud. The main source of losses of the mentioned compounds under the conditions of leaching by the Bayer process is the formation of difficultly soluble sodium alumosilicate of the composition Na20 .Al203, 2Si02 . n H20. A conventional method of an extra recovery of alumina as well as of regeneration of alkali out of red mud is the high-temperature sintering of the latter with soda and limestone with the subsequent leaching of sodium aluminate from the sinter by water or soda solution. A sequential version of the Bayer-sintering flow chart recommended for the prosessing of bauxites with an increased content of silica is based on this method. However, the sintering method is not the only alkaline method allowing to make an extra recovery of alumina likewise of alkali from red mud. Our investigations showed/I/, that the components mentioned can be recovered by a pure hydrochemical method of treating red mud with concentrated alkaline solutions, with lime (Ca0) being present, that was earlier succesfully used in the development of the hydrochemical method of processing nepheline rocks/2/. IIT Research Institute has initiated several multi-sponsored research programs. In this paper the methods for developing four of these programs are discussed. In general, a broad area of investigation must be proposed to interest a spectrum of different industries. The work must not touch upon proprietary data and will probably involve a number of scientific disciplines. Thus, the problem to be solved will attract sponsors who need to know more about the area under study but do not wish, as a single company, to commit the resources required to obtain the necessary know-how for their needs. The paper draws on the background of four IITRI multi-sponsored projects: Size Reduction, a study of grinding of material to reduce their particle size; Melt-Formed Ceramics Research, a method of producing dense, polycrystalline ceramics using glass forming methods; Binders in Ceramic Processing, which addresses the problems associated with the use of organic aids for ceramic processing; and a Study in Air Pollution Technology, a program to review and assess pollution control equipment for current and future applications.

Traditionally, coarse wolframite ore processing has been done almost exclusively by gravity concentration methods. However, there has been a depletion of rich and coarse ore reserves and a proportional increase in the mining of low-grade, fine-grained complex ore feeds. This change has resulted in the need for better slime-processing technology. Research and development activities in this area have gained momentum, and recent innovations appear promising. This paper covers the recent innovations that have been made in dealing with tungsten ore slime processing. The new techniques include the application of a centrifugal cone separator, high-intensity wet magnetic separator, the use of phosphonic and arsonic acids as collectors in ultrafine wolframite flotation, and combined processes.

Traveling grate is a widely used process for iron ore pellet production; however, the thermal state of pellets in drying section is still unclear. In this study, the temperature distribution of drying section was investigated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Based on the calculated results of airflow velocity, space temperature distribution, and the temperature change of pellets, it concluded that there is a coupling effect in drying section in traveling grate. The gas with higher temperature in DDD transfers heat to UDD through the gap of the insulation board, and the temperature gradient of the pellet bed changed before reaching the insulation board. The characteristics of pellet bed expected to appear in DDD was displayed in UDD in advance. Moreover, a contrast experiment was conducted to verify the model.

A goal-programming-based, worker-scheduling model has been incorporated in the Mine Management Support System (MMSS) for assigning workers to prioritized jobs on a shift basis. In the model, the accomplishment of each regular and non-regular job is a goal, and the objective is minimization of the deviations from the goals. A number of coefficients are employed as premultipliers of the decision variables to address practical considerations associated with the utilization of workers and the requirements of jobs. This model is applied to a 41-worker problem.

The technology for using limestone or lime to scrub SO2 from power-plant flue gas has significant implications to the limestone industry. A brief status report on these processes will be made, possible process requirements on the limestone properties will be reviewed, and projections on the buildup of demand with respect to time will be reviewed. Disposal problems inherent with the use of these throwaway processes will also be summarized. Given a viable technology, relations among (1) distance of power plants from low- and high-sulfur coal and limestone deposits, (2) modes of handling and transporting immense tonnages of bulk material-coal and/or limestone, and (3) regional air-quality standards are some of the factors which will ultimately determine the demand for limestone. A discussion of these factors will be presented, with the intent of identifying geographic regions where significant increases in production can reasonably be expected.

The situation of Japanes coal mine is in the severe enviroment, because the policy on coal mining has changed. Every year one or two coal mines will be foced to close. To continue the production of coal, we have to reduce the cost of production. Therefore, the mining by longwall method which is more than 250m was attempted at Taiheiyou Coal Mine to reduce the cost and this mining method have had successful results. To get successful results by this mining method, the controlling and prediction of gas emission from the longwall panel will be most important things. In this paper, the comparison of the predicted gas emission from the mining panel based on the measured gas content by using new device with the observed results is described.

The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, is conducting research and development on a coal-burning gas turbine. This work includes the development of (1) turbine blades resistant to coal ash erosion, (2) equipment to feed coal under pressure to a turbine, (3) an efficient combustion system, and (4) equipment to remove coal ash from the gases that drive the turbine. Initial emphasis is being placed on testing the first turbine ever equipped with blades designed specifically for use with coal as the fuel. Operating tests with this turbine are now in progress. This paper describes the Bureau's coal-burning gas turbine development program and progress on this operating test.

Both hydrometallurgical and vapometallurgical processes often involve ores that have been previously ground and size classified. When the valuable mineral is substantially liberated, the chemical reaction is likely to occur on the particle surface and the particle core will shrink as the reaction proceeds. If the chemical reaction products are solid materials then a solid shell, usually porous, will form around the shrinking core. This is known as the core/shell or topochemical reaction model. Using a spherical approximation for the particles, equations have been developed to express the extent of chemical conversion of the particle, depending on which one of the following process or mass transport steps is rate controlling:1 (1) chemical reaction at the particle surface, (2) diffusion through the thickening reaction product shell or (3) mass transport through a boundary layer surrounding the particle. In a previous paper2 these equations were coupled with the Gates -Gaudin-Schuhmann equation 3 4 describing the distribution of particle sizes resulting from comminution of rocks and other brittle solids to develop reaction yield curves expressing the weight fraction of metal or other valuable component of the feed that was chemically converted as a function of residence time. This was done for (a) batch, (b) continuous plug flow and (c) continuous back-mix flow (continuous stirred tank) reactors or process vessels. Flotation of the carbonate, oxide and silicate minerals of copper (malachite, azurite, chrysocolla) has been the subject of much research in recent years, but few effective solutions to this problem have been found. With decreasing reserves of sulfide minerals, the economic recovery of these "oxides" appears to be an important source of copper for the future. Xanthates have been known for many years to be malachite collectors (1), but only at very high dosages, or at lower dosages following activation of the mineral by sulfide ion. Dewitt and Batchelder (2, 3) found that chelating agents such as certain oximes were collectors for malachite and azurite, but also required high reagent dosages. Fuerstenau (4) has suggested, for example, that potassium octylhydroxamate may be an effective collector for malachite, On the other hand, Balberyszski (5) has found that oxide minerals may be completely sulfidized at high temperatures with gaseous sulfur or H2S, and then floated with conventional collectors. None of the above approaches appear to offer an economically effective method for the direct flotation of these oxide minerals.

Istanbul is the bigest metropolitan city of Turkey with more than 15 millions of population and construction activities are steadly increasing with respect to that increase in population. In this papaer petrographical, physico-mechanical properties of natural aggregate mines from west, (Tekirdag) to East, Izmit (Gebze) 'will be summarized in connection with the concrete production. However the locations suitable for aggregate production in these area as; Paleozoic aged sandstones (Ayazaga, Cendere, Mahmutbey areas), Permb-Carboniferous aged limestones (Cebeciköy area), Triassic limes tones (Ömerli-Gebze areas) and Eosen limestones (Çatalca area), Plio-Quaternary aged volcanic basalts (Tekirdag, Çorlu, Beykoz areas). Plio-quaternary aged, fine grained aggregates within sandy formations are mined in Silivri-Sinekli area, Catalca-Ormanali area, Agacli-Akpinar (Kemerburgaz area) and Sile-Karakiraz-Sahilköy areas. Sandstones mineralogically contain mainly of Quartz+Feldspar and less amount of Mica (biotite+muscovite) rich with slica content and sedimentary origined. Especially limestones are cryptocrystaline textured, unique mineral composed of calcite and secondary have Dolomite ± (Quartz+Albite). Basalts are microlitic textured and contain Olivine+Pyroxene+Plagioclase. Chemically basalts rich with Fe and Mg and also volcanic origined. Sands are fine grained natural aggregates mainly contain semiangled, rounded minerals and rock fragments. Mineralogically have Quartz + Feldspar ± pyroxene+ ambhibole ±garnet and less amount of epidote ± magnetite ± hematite. Different rocks, used in aggregates such as limestones, sandstones-sands and basalts, supply varied concrete strength because of their mineralogical composition and characteristics of textures. Moreover, Basalts (Karatepe area) are good example for the higgest concrete strength (1017-1895 sc; kg/cm2) in our study area because of their clambed mineralogical apperance such as intersertal texture. As the result of extensive field and comparative laboratuary studies, the effect of petrographic, physical, mechanical properties of the aggregates on concrete srtength is extensivelly discussed in this paper.

"This study was carried out to understand the impact of variation in material morphology on the efficacy of microwave pretreatment. Three different types of mineral matter – coal, iron ore and manganese ore – were treated with microwaves at different energy levels, from 180 to 900 W, for different time durations of one to five minutes. The treated samples were subjected to microscopic, milling and liberation studies. Coal is a porous and amorphous material with low dielectric constant, and grinding of the microwave-pretreated coal samples resulted in an 18.18 percent reduction in the 80 percent of passing particle size, or d80, and a 17.1 percent increase in carbon recovery. The microwave-pretreated soft and friable manganese ore samples showed a 47.82 percent reduction in d80 during grinding and higher manganese recovery of 42.46 percent during liberation analysis. The microwave pretreatment and milling of hard and banded iron ore reduced the d80 by 20.83 percent, but no improvement was observed in mineral liberation. Coal showed better results during treatment at lower energy levels of 180 W for one to three minutes, whereas the minerals needed higher energy of 900 W for five minutes. Particle size analysis indicated rapid size reduction up to an energy input of 25 Wh. This effect diminished with increased energy input.IntroductionComminution is an important unit operation in mineral processing plants for the purposes of size reduction and mineral liberation. But most comminution technologies are energy inefficient and only a small amount of energy is consumed in real size reduction, with the rest wasted. High-grade mineral resources have been exploited on a large scale for the last century, and the upgrading of low-grade resources is now required to fulfill the needs of industry. Pretreatment methodologies for comminution will play a crucial role in the upgrading of low-grade mineral resources. Researchers have studied various pretreatment methods to develop an energy-efficient and techno-economically viable solution to improve mineral liberation and product fineness with minimum energy consumption. Most of these studies were focused on the use of chemical additives, thermal, ultrasonic and microwave treatment, and electric disintegration (Klimpel and Austin, 1982; Norgate and Weller, 1994; Gaete-Garreton, Vargas-Hermandez and Velasquez-Lambert, 2000; Wilson et al., 2006; Kumar et al., 2010; Wang, Shi and Manlapig, 2011; Singh et al., 2012)."

A hydrogeologic investigation was conducted to predict inflow to underground mine workings and mining-induced hydrologic impacts for a proposed underground mine beneath a lake in northern Canada. Flow and shut-in tests were conducted to determine hydraulic conductivity values and to estimate the hydraulic head. A conceptual hydrogeologic model was developed and incorporated into a numerical ground-water flow model (utilizing MINEDW, a three-dimensional, finite-element code with special attributes designed for mine dewatering). The mining sequence was represented in detail(e.g., driving ramps and drifts, extracting panels, and backfilling mined areas). Due to limited field data, a quantitative assessment of uncertainty was implemented to estimate limits of possible inflows.

In a complex society such as ours, the range of "negotiating" relationships is constantly increasing. These negotiating relationships have emerged as a direct result of the diffusion of power or influence to new sectors and emerging concerns. Even within organizations, the myth of the authority-based heirarchical structure has given way to the reality of constant negotiations between superior and subordinate and with peers in the organizational structure. In the broader context, the corporate organization finds it necessary to reckon and often negotiate with organized employees, suppliers, buyers, government agencies and a range of organized private interests ranging from minority groups to environmental organizations. In response to this diffusion of power and the conflicts which it has engendered, a variety of conflict avoidance, conflict managing or conflict resolution techniques has developed. The purpose of this paper is to attempt to differentiate between some of the conflict intervention approaches which have appeared "on the market", and to suggest three bases for selecting among them: 1. The "role" of the conflict intervenor; 2. How far the conflict has developed; and 3. The breadth and impact of the issues involved.

"Risk management in tunneling is more important today than it was a few years ago, considering increasing demands for safety and environmental and socio-economic sustainability, which are now required by citizens, owners, lenders, and insurers. Moreover, our current risk management philosophy should not only address risk avoidance and mitigation, but should also be used as a means of value creation, benefiting the overall project. Given the strategic implications of risk management, the authors intend to present, in this paper, a comprehensive overview of references and experiences from current practice—e.g., what is missing or weak, as well as possible or necessary developments that can have a key role in implementing effective risk management, particularly for a project’s design and construction phases. Therefore, as God has set some things in broad daylight; as he has given us some certain knowledge, though limited to a few things so, in the greatest part of our concernments, he has afforded us only the twilight, as I may so say, of probability (John Locke) PREFACE Many large-scale engineering and construction projects suffer millions of dollars in cost overruns, delays in design and construction, and operability troubles once finally completed (Edward W. Merrow, 2011). The undesired effects of these problems can become disastrous for large-scale megaprojects (those that typically cost US$1 billion or more), particularly considering that these are increasingly used as the preferred delivery model for infrastructure (Bent Flyvbjerg, 2014), often in public-private partnerships (PPPs). McKinsey G.I. (2015) has estimated that bridges and tunnels average 35% in cost overruns, and roads 20%. Some of the values published by Flyvbjerg (ibidem, 2014) for projects with relevant underground elements are the highest, with cost overruns from 60% to 300%. The analysis of 32 other case histories (from 1994 to 2010) given by Hartmut, R. (2011, IMIA Annual Conference, Amsterdam) indicates an average increase of costs around $55 million, with a 20-month average delay."

Salt, a non-metallic mineral whose use dates back to earliest history of mankind, and whose uses cover the widest range for any mineral raw material, is generally of widespread occurrence in commercially recoverable quantities in the oceans, in certain sedimentary rocks, in certain lakes, and in certain underground waters. Passing over geological detail, it may be said that, generally, all of the salt in the world has, at least once in geological history, been in solution in the oceans. The total salt content of today's oceans, said to equal 4.5 million cubic miles of rock salt, dwarfs the tremendous volume of salt in the sedimentary rocks. In 1958, United States production of salt was about 22 million net tons and world production about 82 million. About 3 percent of United States production is table salt, with chemical, municipal, industrial and agricultural uses taking the remainder. Mississippi River. Figure 1 has been expanded sufficiently to show also those salt occurrences and producing points which might economically ship salt into these states. Although widespread in occurrence, salt deposits and possible production areas generally show very sharp local boundaries. Salt-for non-table use is susceptible to ?place value?, a common problem in low valued raw materials, where transportation costs often exceed the value of the material f.o.b. the production point. Generally only large capacity mechanized salt producing operations can compete in United States markets, as contrasted to the many small local salt evaporators in less industrialized Mexico.

When prospectors discovered mineralized outcrops in Pine Creek Canyon in 1916, little did they know the site was destined to become one of the world's greatest tungsten mines. Located outside Bishop in California's rugged Sierra Nevada mountain range, the mine's development imposed unique challenges to the hardiest of mining men. In its early years, the Pine Creek operation was plagued by bad luck and poor timing. But through the perseverance of a dynamic group of mining personalities, it would gain world class status. Pine Creek tungsten supplied much of the defense needs of the United States during World War II and put the Bishop area on the map as a major contributor to the nation's stockpile of strategic metals. The mine's history was shaped by world politics, the ups and downs of metals demand and economic survival through technological innovations. In contrast to many mines, Pine Creek's workings went horizontally into and then up inside the mountains - nearly to the ridgetops. This resulted in the name "Mine in the Sky" being attached to the operation. The origin of Pine Creek's ore bodies is related to the emplacement of a portion of the Sierra Nevada batholith about 100 million years ago. During the intrusive process, granitic magmas engulfed overlying calcareous sedimentary rocks, flooding them with silica-rich hydrothermal fluids and metamorphosing them to skarn. The fluids also contained tungsten, molybdenum and copper. They precipitated as scheelite, molybdenite and chalcopyrite, respectively, during the metamorphic process. The ore-bearing skarns occur as near-vertical tabular pendants in the intrusive rocks. These were later exposed by the uplift of the Sierra Nevada mountain range and glacial erosion.
