Geologic constraints on mining and recoverability include the following: coal seams too thin or thick for conventional mining methods; coal seams with insufficient stratigraphic separation; unstable roof or floor strata; discontinuous or lenticular seams; coal seams that have high dips or are intensely faulted; water problems due to proximity of aquifers; and coal quality problems such as excessive sulfur, ash, chlorine, sodium, etc. The demonstrated reserve base for western coal of 220 billion tons is considered misleading as it does not adequately incorporate the above parameters in estimating procedures. Current reserve base estimating procedures involve an abstraction of data from generalized resource estimates. The authors believe the reserve base should be determined independently beginning with well-known deposits, with all mining and recoverability constraints fully incorporated.

The Tripoli deposits in the southwest corner of Missouri In Newton County and the northeast corner of Oklahoma in Ottawa County, located in the vicinity of Seneca, Missouri, contains an unusual and peculiar form of silica which has not been found any other place in the world. Its outstanding characteristic is the physical structure of the individual particle, The particle structure of the Missouri-Oklahoma type Tripoli accounts for its market. It is a soft, friable, porous, double-refracting silica of the chalcedony variety, The particle is porous, has a fibrous structure, no sharp edges or comers, ad an average size of less than .01 millimeter, It varies from 90 to 98 per cent Si02 with less than 1 per cent free silica in the form of quartz, 24; has ignition loss of 1 per cent and fractional percentages of iron, alumina, lime, etc.

NIOSH continues to conduct respirable dust control research for surface mine blasthole drilling operations. Research areas have included testing variables (shroud leakage area, drill deck cross-sectional area, shroud height, collector-to-bailing airflow ratio, etc.) that have the most impact on respirable dust control, development of a dust collector inlet hood, development of a dust collector dump point shroud, and testing of a small diameter water separating sub. This paper summarizes the results of the aforementioned research that has been completed. Additionally, past dust control research for drilling operations of both underground and surface mines completed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, created in 1910 and incorporated into NIOSH in 1997, is reviewed.

Effective coal mine face ventilation, for remotely controlled and automated mining systems, is essential for the control of methane. The evolution of new mining equipment and methods has required changes and improvements in face ventilation methods. One emphasis today is on the use of remotely operated and automated mining systems that can be used to make continuous cuts of 6 m (20 ft) and deeper. U.S. Bureau of Mines research is studying ways to more effectively ventilate these extended cuts. Two face ventilation techniques that utilize either blowing brattice or a jet fan for deep cutting are examined in this paper. Bureau of Mines procedures for evaluating face ventilation systems are also discussed.

INTRODUCTION Excess bronchogenic carcinoma has been demonstrated among underground uranium miners in the United States, Czechoslovakia, and Canada (Archer 1981). This excess cancer is attributed largely to radiation from the alpha particles delivered to the tracheobronchial epithelium by the decay of short-lived daughters of radon. Interaction between the radiation and cigarette smoking has been demonstrated in production of the excess cancer (Archer 1973). The distribution of histologic types of bronchogenic cancer among uranium miners was established as different from that in other men in 1964 when an analysis of the first 51 cases among United States uranium miners was published (Saccomanno 1964). It was confirmed five years later by Yugoslavian studies (Horacek 1969). A later analysis, using a relative frequency method, indicated that oat cell and other small cell undifferentiated carcinomas increased markedly with increasing exposure to radiation in uranium mines (Saccomanno 1971). A subsequent analysis used only cases from an epidemiological study so as to enable calculation of expected numbers. It showed that there was an elevation in incidence of epidermoid, adenocarcinomas, and possibly other types, as well as small cell undifferentiated carcinomas (Archer 1974). At that time, it was felt that the histological distribution of cancer among uranium miners was well established. However, one of the authors (GS) has noted that fewer oat cell carcinomas were appearing among uranium miners in recent years. In his material the fraction of oat cell carcinoma, in successive 5 year periods between 1960 and 1980 was 59, 46, 37, and 22 percent. The association with calendar years is almost certainly spurious, reflecting some other factor associated with time. From the standpoint of tumor biology such a change must be important. This is a preliminary report which attempts to determine the cause of that change. POSSIBLE REASONS FOR OBSERVED CHANGE IN CELL TYPES 1) It might reflect a decrease in radiationinduced carcinomas, so that most of the ones being seen now are cigarette-induced. This appears to be a possibility because radiation levels in mines had been markedly reduced in the early 1970s, and because most of the uranium miners now developing carcinoma had quit mining during the 1965-1975 period. 2) It might represent a change in interpretation by the pathologists involved. 3) It might represent a real change in distribution as a result of increased latency, an aging population, cessation of smoking, increasing pack years of cigarettes, or other factors which have changed with time. Each of these possibilities is being checked. Dr. Waxweiler, later in this conference, is presenting an updated mortality analysis of United States underground uranium miners. His data indicate that lung cancer incidence among the Study Group of uranium miners is still quite high, but the ratio of observed to expected is falling somewhat. It is apparent that decreasing exposures in uranium mines is not yet reflected in normal lung cancer mortality rates. Reason #1 is therefore very unlikely. Thirty-five percent of the histologic types of carcinomas in this study were classified by a panel of three pathologists, 45% were classified by one of the panel members, and 20% were classified by a number of

H. P. Ferri I refer to the article "Degradation Process in Coal Slurry Pipelines" by M.G. Ayat and B.C. Scott in the September 1988 issue of Mining Engineering. I would like to congratulate Dr. Ayat and his colleague on a very interesting and valuable piece of work. This article is an excellent one, describing a real phenomenon that has been ignored for so long. I do, however, have an objection. The article fails to address the degradation process when coal is processed or transported in other ways than slurry form, particularly those employed in this work. Could, for example, screening (wet or dry) have contributed to the extent of degradation? Perhaps scanning electron micrographs of the samples examined and after screening would have helped to clarify this. I would like to point out that degradation is also observed in pneumatic conveying systems, mechanical conveying, and other means of transportations employed by the mineral industry. Reply by M. G. Ayat We gratefully acknowledge Dr. Fern's comments on the subject paper. As he so rightly points out, the degradation process is a real problem, not only in coal slurry pipelines, but also in many handling and processing equipment employed by the coal and mineral industry. Scanning Electron Microscopic examination of samples may offer very little information about the extent of degradation for several reasons. One is that preparing a representative sample that has undergone degradation will be extremely difficult if not impossible. This problem is exacerbated by the fact that SEM requires only very small amounts of material for testing. Secondly, there is a sample preparation step involved in the SEM examination and, as such, it would be very difficult to associate the extent of degradation to either sample preparation or handling and processing operations. Finally, it is probably worth mentioning that degradation is a multi-faceted phenomenon involving many natural and man-made factors. The logical approach to this problem would, therefore, seem to be a "one-step-at-a-time" approach.

While a NIOSH accepted procedure exists for determination of quartz in the respirable dust samples from coal mines, no specific procedure has been defined for quartz determination in bulk samples. In this study, the effect of particle size on the estimation of quartz using the infrared technique was evaluated. Several laboratory tests were performed to determine the dependence of the infrared absorbance peak height on the different sizes of quartz particles. The significant dependence observed between quartz particle size and the measured peak height indicates the potential for erroneous interpretation of the quartz in bulk samples depending on how the samples are prepared. A procedure to reduce the effect of size in the determination of the quartz content is suggested.

Phosphate mining in Florida generates approximately 100,000 tons/day of phosphatic clays (slime). This waste slime not only creates one of the most difficult disposal problems in the mining industry, but also causes tremendous loss of P2O5. About 20-30% of the phosphate mined end up in phosphatic clays. Recovering the phosphate from this waste is difficult for two main reasons: 1) the slime is extremely fine in size, and 2) clay minerals account for almost half of the material. A half dozen dispersants were evaluated for keeping the clay minerals suspended for subsequent separation from non-clay minerals by either settling or cycloning. The separation efficiency and economics are discussed.

In recent years, the diminishing supply of natural gas has led energy suppliers and consumers to consider making synthetic natural gas from coal. A number of processes have been devised to produce gas from coal; many of these have been operated at the pilot stage and some have been operated commercially. Each process has specific coal feed stock requirements with respect to size consist and moisture content. The purpose of this presentation is to compare the estimated costs for coal handling, live storage, size reduction and drying facilities that would be required for delivery of coal feedstock to different gasification processes.

During the past decade we have witnessed spectacular improvements in productivity of open pit mining equipment. Thousand-horsepower engines, 200-ton trucks and 15-yard electric shovels, which such a short time ago were just dreams on a drawing board, are now realities. More productive equipment and metal shortages have encouraged increased production at existing mines and the development of new larger tonnage operations. Operators and engineers have been able to employ computers and various other types of automation to "stay on top of things". The mine geologist, however, is merely faced with a bigger and more rapidly changing pit to pick in. Keeping geologic information current in these mines presents entirely new problems to mine geological staffs. To obtain adequate geologic information on the developing orebody requires enlargement of the staff to share the work load or revision of methods in keeping with the times. The former has the disadvantage of loss of the comprehensive knowledge of the pit that a chief geologist likes to have, not to mention management's usual lack of enthusiasm for force increases.

The Atlantic City iron mine is located in Fremont County in central Wyoming, near the historic gold mining camps of Atlantic City and South Pass City. The mine lies on the southeast flank of the Wind River Mountains at an elevation of about 2,470 m (8,100 ft) above sea level (Fig. 1). An 81-h M2 (200-acre) tailings impoundment at the Atlantic City taconite operation has been a source of blowing dust. The site qualified for reclamation under Wyoming&apos;s Abandoned Mine Land (AML) reclamation program. The ultimate reclamation construction incorporated commercially available organic amendments and fertilizers into a 300-mm- (12-in.-) thick cap of a sterile clay loam cover material. The water level was lowered in an adjacent flooded mine pit that was feeding uncontrolled seeps into the tailings basin. A wide tailings pond spillway was built that allows flood control while minimizing seasonal water-level fluctuations in the pond. Rock berms and rock snow fences were built for wind-erosion control and soil-moisture preservation. Future work includes tree planting in the protective wind/ snow shadows of rock berms and rock snow fences and plugging a decant pipe. US Steel opened the Atlantic City iron mine in August 1962. It closed in 1983. Taconite iron ore was mined by surface methods. The ore was magnetically separated from the waste. The magnetic concentrate was mixed with bentonite, formed into pellets and roasted to produce a blast furnace feed stock for US Steel&apos;s blast furnaces in Geneva, UT. The pellets were hauled by rail to the Geneva Iron Works. The Atlantic City Mine produced three types of wastes. These included waste rock overburden from mining, a coarse-grained (sand to small-gravel sized), nonmagnetic reject rock termed "cobbs" and fine-grained tailings ranging from 600 to 75 µm (28 to <200 mesh). Common carbon dioxide capturing reagents, such as amines and sodium hydroxide, are expensive, toxic, and energy intensive to regenerate. We have added frothers to a sodium carbonate solution in order to increase the surface area available for CO2 transport within the packed bed of a counter current scrubbing column. Addition of frothers has improved the performance of sodium carbonate scrubbing solutions to be on par with sodium hydroxide scrubbing solutions. This novel enhancement of a relatively inexpensive CO2 capture-regeneration cycle shows potential to allow plants to turn a profit by sequestering a waste product. These results are discussed in detail in the following manuscript. INTRODUCTION The combustion of fossil fuels converts chemical energy to thermal energy. CO2 is produced as a byproduct of the reaction. 80% of the world’s electricity is produced by using this thermal energy to power a generator, accounting for 40% of global carbon dioxide emissions. In an effort to stabilize the rising atmospheric CO2 levels, researchers are investigating the application of carbon capture and storage (CCS) systems in power plants. [1] Efforts to capture CO2 at some power plants have been successful, but the cost of installing and operating the required equipment is high. As such, very few power plants have CCS systems. If CO2 can be captured and processed into a product that can be sold at a profit, installing CCS systems in power plants will be a very attractive business decision. In order for the sale of captured CO2 to become a profitable venture, the cost of capturing the CO2 from a flue gas must be reduced. BACKGROUND The most common method for separating CO2 from a flue gas is by passing it through a counter-current packed bed scrubbing column. The flue gas enters the bottom of a column while a solution of a chemical with properties advantageous to the absorption of CO2 is pumped to the top. The fluids interact in a packed bed, where the CO2 is transported from the gas to the liquid. CO2 is an acid gas, so it is common for the scrubbing solution to be alkaline in nature in order to neutralize the carbonic acid that is formed when it is dissolves into water. The exhaust exits the top of the column free of carbon dioxide, which exits the column in the scrubbing solution, reacting or complexing with the absorbent. Figure 1 is a schematic drawing of a CO2 scrubbing column. It shows the molar flowrates and compositions of the gas and liquid at the bottom [1], the top [2], and an arbitrary height in the column [Z]. [2,15] L is the molar flowrate of liquid at any point in in the column. G is the molar flowrate of gas at any point in the column. Since the CO2 is transported from the gas to the liquid, L and G are variable with respect to height. To simplify calculations, the CO2 free molar flowrates Ls and Gs are often used. X is the fraction moles of aqueous CO2 per mole of CO2 free liquid. Y is the fraction moles of gaseous CO2 per mole of CO2 free gas. Figure 2 is a composition diagram of the scrubbing column depicted in figure 1.

The Bureau of Mines is glad to have this opportunity to discuss its present Coal Research Program and its significance to the industry with a group which has for many years been representative of the coal producing community. We believe we have a dynamic program that will help our vast coal resources to find their proper place in the U. S, economy. The present coal research activities of the Bureau are conducted in three organizational subdivisions: Minerals Research, Mineral Resource Development, and Health and Safety. All investigations are carried out in Bureau research facilities located in different sections of the country, Since its creation by the Organic Act of 1910 and subsequent amendments, the Bureau has worked closely with the coal industry--first by providing assistance in mine safety for anthracite and bituminous coal mining, and since that time, in providing information on conservation, safety, mining, preparation, and utilization.

INTRODUCTION This presentation is concerned with the administrative and technical capability of the Atomic Energy Control Board (AECB) to assure compliance with the individual exposure limit for radon daughters (currently 4 WLM per year). It is not concerned with the epidemiological bases for setting the exposure limit. Moreover, the intent is to show how sophisticated methodologies and advanced technologies, applied to radon daughter concentration measurements in uranium mines, convey the spirit of compliance by providing better estimates than do the historical methods. These better estimates mean that more accurate and more precise estimates of each worker&apos;s exposure are determined using these more modern methods and devices. The estimates so derived should provide more convincing evidence to an individual worker that his assigned exposure is a valid indicator of his true exposure. In addition, a perspective on the exposure estimate in relation to the exposure limit is given as further evidence that an exposure limit is not the dividing line between "safe" and "unsafe" exposures. A brief description is given of the compliance aspects of the Atomic Energy Control Regulations and of the limitations of purely statistical non-compliance procedures. Most of the emphasis of the paper will be placed on the uncertainties associated with conventional radon daughter exposure determination and the means being employed (and anticipated) to reduce these uncertainties. NON-COMPLIANCE Under current Atomic Energy Control Regulations (1978), the annual individual exposure limit for radon daughters is given without reference to the possible methods of sampling and calculation of radon daughter exposure and without any reference to possible uncertainties or their magnitudes. This is common in such statutes, the details of sampling, calculation, error analysis, and so on, being left for licence conditions or provided as a specific guideline to the licensee on the matter of compliance with the Regulation. Since the exposure limit is contained in the Regulations, compliance with it is absolute, as with any other law. In Canada, a state of non-compliance with the radon daughter exposure limit exists when an exposure (attributed to an employee) is reported by the licensee to exceed the limit. No uncertainty in the measurements or in the overall determination of exposure is reported nor is any requested. Removal of the worker and the loss of his services are the immediate and direct penalty suffered by the licensee for failure to maintain the exposure at, or below, the limit. A worker may be re-instated to employment for the balance of the reporting period only if the licensee can assure the AECB that further significant exposure to the worker will not ensue. In other jurisdictions, such as the United States, non-compliance is defined on a statistical basis. For example, NIOSH, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health presents procedures for calculating the 95% Lower Confidence Limit (LCL) in order to "compare the results of occupational environmental sampling to an occupational health standard and make a decision with a known chance of making an incorrect decision that a state of non-compliance exists" (Leidel and Busch, 1975). (In the nomenclature of this presentation, exposure limit would be used in place of "standard", in the NIOSH sense). Furthermore, it is emphasized in the NIOSH document that such numerical comparisons "are necessary only if the sample mean is greater than the standard". The NIOSH document points out, quite correctly, that the "statistical procedures presented below will not detect and do not allow for analysis of highly inaccurate results, i.e., systematic (non-random) errors or mistakes ... If a systematic error is known to exist in an instrument or analytical procedure then correct the sample mean of the data before analyzing for non-compliance". It is certainly not the purpose of this paper to criticize the sophisticated statistical approach to non-compliance as given in the NIOSH document or in similar approaches used in other jurisdictions. Rather, the purpose is to approach, with some introspection, the question of the determination of exposure by the employer for his employee and especially the employee&apos;s understanding of, and confidence in, the accuracy of the exposure determination and its relation to the exposure limit. The ability of microorganisms such as yeast, bacteria, and various aquatic flora to sorb metals from dilute aqueous solutions is well documented. Although microorganisms have significant potential in decontaminating waste waters, techniques and equipment suitable for bioassisted decontamination are limited. The Bureau of Mines has investigated the use of microorganisms immobilized in porous polysulfone beads for extracting toxic and heavy metals from dilute waste streams. The minus 8- plus 12-mesh beads were fabricated from high-density poly- sulfone dissolved in dimethylformamide (DMF). Dried, thermally killed yeast, algae, duckweed, xanthan gum, and alginates were blended into the polysulfone-DMF, and spherical beads were formed by injecting the mixture into water. Microscopic analysis revealed microorganisms immobilized within the bead pores. The beads had excellent handling characteristics and were tested in stirred reactors, fixed bed columns, and fluidized bed columns for their ability to remove metal contaminants from several waste waters. The effluents resulting from these waste waters met or exceeded the National Drinking Water Standards for cadmium, copper, manganese, and zinc. Other heavy metal contaminants readily sorbed by the beads included arsenic and mercury. Elution of metal values from the beads was accomplished using dilute nitric acid or sodium carbonate.

Dilute-phase pneumatic conveying has been used in the mining industry since the 1920s. It has primarily been used for the hoisting of coal and salt ores, and as a transportation medium for backfill material. More recently there have been investigations into a wider variety of applications, which this paper addreses. The paper will point out some deficiencies in the system. It 1s not the "champion" of the mining industry, but rather an excellent srste?1 with a variety of applications that may not have been studied m enough detail. The most imaginative applications to the Redpath Pneumatic Conveying System have been initiated by persons needing an innovative application to a specific predicament.

The West Seattle Tunnel is part of a regional sewer conveyance system located in Seattle Washington. The tunnel was constructed for the Waste Water Treatment Division of the King County Department Of Natural Resources, from June of 1995 through the first quarter of 1997. The Geologic setting for this soft-ground tunnel consists of glacial, interglacial, glacio-lacustrine, and alluvial soils. This paper, prepared jointly by the owner and con-tractor, will describe project-related site geology, engineering considerations, construction, and dispute resolution/avoidance practices.

Alacer Gold Corporation is constructing the Çöpler Gold Mine in eastern Turkey. Mining commenced in the fourth quarter of 2009 and gold production started in the fourth quarter of 2010. The mine is a 15,500 t/day oxide heap leach with three-stage crushing, agglomeration, carbon adsorption and electrowinning for final metal recovery. Leach solution copper levels are expected to be relatively low during the first two years of production, but will increase in later years due to higher copper content in the mined and processed ore. Over the mine life, approximately 40 Mt of ore will be placed on the leach pad, which will contain about 35,000 t of copper. Metallurgical testing indicates copper extraction will vary by ore type and, if controls are not implemented, may lead to copper levels exceeding 1,000 mg/L in pregnant solution. High copper levels in leach solution have the deleterious effect of increasing cyanide consumption and potentially overwhelming the ability of the carbon circuit to effectively adsorb the principal economic metals, which in this case are gold and silver. Using data obtained from laboratory leach column testwork, the heap leach facility was modeled using METSIM process simulation software to estimate the build-up of copper in leach solution over the life of the mine. Laboratory testwork was also performed to evaluate process conditions for treating a portion of pregnant leach solution via sulfide addition to precipitate saleable copper as copper sulfide (Cu2S).

Based on the concept of slope-stability analysis, a formula for determining an important parameter required in the mathematical model for the prediction of mining subsidence in hilly terrain is proposed. The slope geometry and the physical and mechanical properties of the soil at the surface of the natural slope can all be considered in the formula. Incorporation of this new formula into an existing mathematical model provides an integrated approach for the study of ground movement in hilly regions.

Just prior to the close of the century, the Mine Safety and Health Review Commission issued its long-awaited decision in Berwind Natural Resources et al. vs. Secretary of Labor[1] to usher in the new millennium. The case arose as a result of a mine explosion in Eastern Kentucky resulting in the US Mine Safety and Health Administration&apos;s (MSHA) issuance of 225 citations, not only to the contractor but to four affiliated entities of Berwind Corp. While an Administrative Law Judge dismissed citations to three of the four Berwind entities, MSHA and the remaining Berwind entity appealed the case to the commission. Although the commission effectively left intact the administrative law judge&apos;s decision, it announced a new theory of liability that would apparently be applied in the future, namely the unitary operator theory.
