The subject of this paper is mineral processing chemicals - how they work and where they end up environmentally. First of all, it is necessary to recognize that water is the most universally and widely used chemical used by the mining industry to separate desirable minerals from unwanted wastes, sands, and slimes. Of the total world's water supply, over 97 percent is found in the oceans. Another two percent is tied up in the ice caps, leaving roughly only one percent for us to work with. This one percent is distributed either as ground or surface water and makes up the bulk of all water used industrially. Even with such a small proportion available for immediate use, there appears to be enough fresh water to meet our needs for at least another hundred years. This availability, however, depends heavily on how we handle our waste waters, how we process them, and how we plan for their reuse. Certain governmental agencies have been charged with the task of setting up standards of water quality which must be met prior to environmental discharge. There is even discussion of zero discharge from industrial operations. Due to limited supply and availability, the mining industry has always been forced to reuse its process water or to treat it prior to discharge. Consequently, we are in an enviable position and are presently able to live with the environmentalists demands. To stay on top of the situation, it is necessary to continually concern ourselves with the .effects of changing orebodies and reagents on the final mill effluent. From a process standpoint, it is also important to recognize the impurities of plant recycle water and how they might tend to influence overall operations

INTRODUCTION Radon, thoron and their airborne daughter products may result in a significant biological hazard when they are concentrated in enclosed places such as mines, houses and caves. High concentrations of radon and its particulate daughter have long, been known to be a causative agent for lung cancer to uranium miner: (Archer 1973). More recently increasing concern has been expressed on the possible health hazards associated with long term exposures over large population groups to low levels of radon daughters (Cohen 1980, Stranden 1980). Due to its peculiar geological features, Italy has various natural environments where the content of uranium and thorium in the soil may increase underground radioactivity. The presence in Italy of many underground waters rich in radon may be considered a further important source of radon in underground mines. A preliminary survey of the radon and radon daughter air concentrations in italian underground mines was started in 1971 (Bottino 1973). Furthermore many studies (Sciocchetti 1978, Sciocchetti 1980, Clemente 1980) have been performed during the last ten year to characterize the natural radiation environment in Italy. It has been also demonstrated that 21OPb/21OPo skeletal burden in spa workers and non-uranium miners can be heavily increased by the exposure (short or/and prolonged) to high levels of radon daughter air concentration (Clemente 1980). All these studies have been of great help to put in the right prospective the radiation hazards linked to the underground working activity in non-uranium italian mines. Two main actions have been prosecuted from 1971 until today in order to evaluate in greater detail such radiation hazards and then, when needed, to obtain their reduction to levels which may be considered acceptable. The two actions may schematically described as the following: - Measurement of the radon and daughter (and thoron and daughter when needed) concentrations in most of the italian non-uranium mines. The assessment of the radiation hazards linked to both the annual average lung exposure and the 210 Pb - 210 Po annual average dose to the skeleton is then performed for each considered mine by taking into account the main parameters characteristic of the mine. - Set up of a national regulatory recommendation on the permissible limits for the radiation exposure of workers due to underground mining activity. Such recommendation have been established in 1978 and have been designed in order to implement a national radiation protection practice during the underground mining activity. In this paper a summary description of the results obtained during the execution of these two actions will be given. MATERIAL AND METHODS Measurement of Radon, Thoron and their Daughter Products The excution of the planned survey requires the availability of specific techniques and instruments for measuring the different parameters characterizing the radon, thoron and their daughter exposure in mines. A reference laboratory was set up for the development and the standardization of the measurement procedures. Measurements of radon, thoron and daughter concentrations are performed by various methods: instanteneous or grab sampling methods and continuous read out monitors. The radon concentration is usually measured by a modified version of the two filter method. Mine air is drawn into a polyethylene bag and the sample is there after injected into a two filter tube; after sampling the exit filter is counted by the alpha spectrometric technique. The measurements is completed in a total time of less than 25 minutes at a sensitivity level as low as 3.7 Bq/m3 for a tube volume of 15 1. The measurement of radon and thoron daughter concentration and of the relevant potential alpha energy concentration is performed by means of a portable spectrometric apparatus which was developed at our laboratory (Sciocchetti 1981). The device allows multiple operating modes: instantaneous or brief sampling period and automatic cycles; computer data processing is then provided. The Bureau of Mines analyzed coal mine blasting accident data obtained from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), U.S. Department of Labor. The data were examined to determine the causes, frequency, and severity of accidents in an effort to point out the most dangerous aspects of coal mine blasting. Accident data for the 14 years from 1971 through 1984 show that there has been a total of 43 fatal and 926 nonfatal blasting accident victims in surface and under- ground coal mining. This is an average of 3.1 fatal and 66.1 non- fatal injuries each year. Underground coal mining accounted for 60.5% of the fatal and 78.7% of the nonfatal accidents involving explosives and breaking agents in coal mining. In addition, since 1970 there have been 53 fatal and 20 nonfatal injuries that occurred when explosives were the ignition source for dust and/or methane explosions in underground mines. Abstracts from 297 accidents that occurred from 1978 through 1984 were also examined to determine accident causes. Most accidents occur during scheduled blasting, and failure of the blast area security system is the leading cause. Blast area security problems in surface mining are failure to clear the blast zone, failure of personnel to follow instructions, inadequate guarding, and failure to retreat to a safe location and/or take adequate cover. Other common causes in surface mining include premature blasts, excessive flyrock, and misfires. In addition to the above causes, accidents in underground coal mining can be due to rockfalls triggered by the blast, unexpected breakthroughs, fumes, and incidents associated with Airdox-type systems.

"Efforts have been tried to apply the mixture of mine tailings and fly ash as construction materials. Through the present investigation, a protocol to make construction materials using the mixture of mine tailings and fly ash has been set up. The experiment results of the present work also help set up the working conditions such as activation temperature and time, the concentration of NaOH, the addition of Ca(OH)2, forming pressure, mine tailing to fly ash weight ratio, curing temperature and curing time. The findings of the present work provide a novel method for the geopolymerization of the mixture of mine tailings and fly ash as construction materials, such as bricks for construction and road pavement. INTRODUCTION In mining activity, after the valuable materials are extracted from ores, millions of tons of solid rejects, i.e., mine tailings, are stored in the tailings dam, which occupies a huge area of land and leads to high monetary, environmental and ecological costs. For example, the impoundment of mine tailings can bring with serious environmental problems such as mine dust and tailing dam failure. On the other hand, the making of general construction material results in a lot of greenhouse gas emission. Therefore, it is of great interest to utilize mine tailings, for which a lot of energy has been consumed during the comminution process, as construction materials using the novel geopolymerization technique. (Xu and van Deventer, 2000, 2002a, 2002b; Pacheco-Torgal et al., 2007, 2008; Zhang et al., 2011; Ahmari et al., 2012) Fly ash is another industrial waste which needs to be carefully impounded because of its potential impact on environment. Many efforts have been tried to utilize fly ash as construction materials because it is a silica/alumina rich aluminosilicate source. In addition, the facts that fly ash is quite reactive to alkali and its particle size is usually very small (< 50 microns) make the specific material an ideal source for the geopolymerization process to make construction materials. Geopolymerization is a process of obtaining a polymeric structure from aluminosilicate by dissolving aluminosilicate sources in a strong alkali (NaOH) solution at an elevated temperature. After being cured at an elevated temperature for a specific time, the geopolymerization product shows a greatly increased compressive strength. Therefore, the product can be used as construction material such as bricks and road pavement. It provides a very promising method to apply aluminosilicate sources such as mine tailings and fly ash as construction materials."

This study deals with carrier flotation of cerium dioxide, a surrogate of plutonium oxide, which is the major contaminant at the Nevada Test Site (NTS). The objective of this study was to determine the feasibility of using carrier flotation for remediation of the site. In this study, a - 200-mesh fraction of pure cerium dioxide was used. Oleic acid was used as the collector, while calcium carbonate was used as the carrier. Mechanical-cell tests were conducted to float the surrogate from a mixture containing uncontaminated NTS soil, both in the absence and presence of the carrier. It was found that the addition of the carrier drastically enhanced the flotation recovery of cerium dioxide. The flotation recovery of the surrogate increased from 34% to 65% by adding only 0.5% calcium carbonate (-150 mesh). The recovery further increased to 95% by adding 10% calcium carbonate. The flotation method utilizing a carrier of calcium carbonate seems to have a high potential for the remediation of the soil contaminated with radionuclides at the NTS.

The purpose of this paper is to present validation studies of the mine-fire simulator using data gathered from an actual mine fire which occurred in November 1991 at the Pattiki Mine. This study evaluates the suitability of the computer software package for modeling underground fires. The paper also discusses the importance of the on-line monitoring system for the validation process.

The 2006 Sago, Darby, and Aracoma mine disasters in the United States (US) forced the US government to implement the 2006 MINER Act and additional regulations that require all US underground coal mines to install and maintain refuge chambers to manage entrapment emergencies, in particular, fires and explosions. However, there is a debate on whether barricading in refuge chambers is a good strategy to survive such emergencies. Australian coal mines are not required to use refuge chambers and, instead, have adopted a strategy that focuses on instructing and training miners to self-escape to the surface. This paper analyzes merits and problems of using refuge chambers and self-escape to the surface to manage emergencies in fires or explosions in an underground coal mine. The authors found that the use of refuge chambers may not be the best strategy during extensive fires or when multiple explosions happen. In these situations, mine rescuers are unlikely able to extract miners who are sheltered in chambers and conversely, self-escape may save more lives than sheltering. Chances for successful self-escape are further improved by regular, externally assessed training such as Level 1 Emergency Exercises required in the Australian State of Queensland. These exercises put pressure on mine operators to ensure and maintain the effectiveness of their emergency management system.

Researchers at the University of Alabama in cooperation with the U.S. Bureau of Mines have developed adaptive process control systems in which genetic algorithms (GAS) are used to augment fuzzy logic controllers (FLCs). GAS are search algorithms that rapidly locate near-optimum solutions to a wide spectrum of problems by mimicking the search procedures of natural genetics. FLCs are rule based systems that efficiently manipulate a problem environment by modeling the "rule-of-thumb" strategy used in human decision making. GAS and FLCs can be combined to produce powerful, efficient, and robust adaptive control systems. To perform efficiently, such control systems require a control element to manipulate the problem environment, an analysis element to recognize changes in the problem environment, and a learning element to adjust to the changes in the problem environment. I" this paper, the details of an ongoing research effort to develop and implement an adaptive process control system for a column flotation unit are discussed.

A small underground mine in northern Idaho was used as an experimental facility for studying the role of water in the analysis of mine-opening stability. Laboratory test data, borehole measurements and geological mapping assisted in the construction of a coupled finite element model of the rock mass. The model was used to make quantitative estimates of rock stress, strain and displacement changes and to make estimates of the water pressure and flow velocity changes that occurred during historical mining. Stope cuts and wet fills were included in the analysis. The stability of the crown pillars between stopes was of particular interest. The relatively low effective stress and high rock-mass strength showed that water pressure changes were of no great consequence, which is in agreement with experience. The computational tools used in the analysis may be applied to other wet mines with appropriate changes to site-specific data.

Having an interest in coal slurry pipelines from a decade of arguments with Ed Wasp and crew at Bechtel about pumping thicker slurries slower, I immediately read this article and found nothing in it pertinant to the title. Ayat and Scott pumped five unidentified coals at 9% solids (50%-60% is the area of interest) in a 25-mm (1-in.) pipe around two square elbows through a 76-mm (3-in.) cyclone for up to 60 minutes and sized a large number of samples of unstated size on an unidentified wet screening device. They did not measure power consumption, discharge pressure, flow rate, or give pump tip speed or impeller diameter. They siad the cyclone had a "high" pressure drop (unmeasured) and did much of the degradation (measured) but more or less per unit of energy expended? Hargrove was not measured, so there are no data as to whether it would correlate with degradation. The authors conclude, with no attempt, correlation is "hard to establish." Please experiment before concluding. I am at a loss to know what "increasingly smaller size" means, much less what theory says such particles take "exponentially larger quantities of energy," which the authors neglected to measure. If such experiments without pertinent data or justified conclusions must be published, please attach a pertinant title.

INTRODUCTUCTICN The coal seams at Bobov dol basin are highly prone to spontaneous combustion in Bulgaria. The risks of endogenous fires (SPONCOM) exist mainly in gob area. During the last 15 years three different technologies for preventing and fighting SPONCOM have been applied in underground mines of this basin: pulp from hard material and water, foam and inerting with nitrogen. On the basis of experimental application of these technologies as well as theoretical and experimental research a new technology - Foam Pulp Technology (FPT) was worked out. It is very effective in difficult to reach places in a gob. BACKGROUND AND THE NEED OF FPT Application of the three methods mentioned above showed advantages as well as some disadvantages, allowing determination of their effective application scope depending on geological and working conditions. Their advantages can be summarized as follows: - Foaming: high viscosity at low density, which allows forming a thick layer; good surfactant wetting properties; excellent effective cooling during evaporation in high temperature zones. - Pulping with mixture of solid particles (e.g., fly ash) and water from surface installation: easy to apply in a mine; low operational and energy costs due to gravity transport from the surface to the gob: good ecological results because the waste material is returned back underground. - Inerting with nitrogen: volumetric action which doesn&apos;t restrict the thickness of treated coal pile; easy to apply in a mine; controllable nitrogen delivery depending on fire hazard conditions. Main disadvantages of the same three methods are: - Foaming: rapid disintegration due to intrusion into heterogeneous and porous media and high costs due to the need of frequent large volume foam flows (short foam&apos;s life); - Pulping: inapplicable for coal piles with high thickness which is of great importance in the cases of seams with ununiform hypsometry (rapid and frequent changes in a seam configuration) and/or great volumes of coal or ore piles particularly heated to a high temperature; strong dependence on gob floor declination; water draining of the working face area which impedes the movement of supports and chain conveyor&apos;s. - Inerting: relatively high costs hardly depending on the rate of face advance (fig.1) in comparison with the other methods; it is difficult to ensure sufficient oxygen at the exit end of the face. This problem is crucial in faces with a high level of methane emissions; accelerating of the oxidation and spontaneous heating of the pile after turning off the nitrogen supply. "For his pioneering contributions to the understanding of the geology of porphyry copper systems" Recipient Of The 1997 D. C. Jackling Award SPENCER R. TITLEY Introduction The subject of this lecture, a late century perspective on porphyry copper geology, is one of current interest and importance as the search for these ores remains intense. It is presented in the belief that an appreciation of our present understanding of the subject requires it to be viewed historically, thus providing a basis for evaluating appropriate directions for continued study. At the outset, it is important to note that the technology of mining and extractive metallurgy has developed ore from these low grade orebodies, starting with D. C. Jackling, and has continued to create them as copper grade and price have diminished. But the continued search for them is a geological problem that responds to growing expectations of people and societies; exploration based upon ever increasing knowledge of the habits of the ores has been very successful. This is the story of evolution of geological thought and practice in porphyry ore search across an interval of time beginning with the bulk mining of "low grade" copper ores at Bingham and ending with late Century concepts. "How did we get here?" The lecture concerns the ideas of many different people. The ideas and events discussed reflect a bias on North American thought, where the great low grade orebodies were first recognized as such and where many of the basic geological ideas were developed. A very great number of geologists have contributed to this understanding. In no sense is it meant to minimize the contributions to the story that have evolved in the study and mining of ores of the Andes, whose development and expansion has been nearly synchronous with that in North America - nor to minimized comparable contributions made in the late century from studies of the newer discoveries of deposits in other regions, especially the southwestern Pacific regions. In expansion of this topic, I have found that many important concepts are marked by appropriate publication but some are not, or I have not been able to discover documentation. Many notions appear to have become conventional knowledge without publication, mostly being geological viewpoints developed synchronously from similar observation. Thus, apologies are extended in advance to those whose work I have might have missed and to those unknown to me whose unpublished ideas may have seeped into the pool of common knowledge without appropriate recognition. The analysis here addresses events of two time segments, an older one extending from the developments at Bingham in the early 1900s through the Second World War, ending about 1950: the second period extends from that time to the present. This separation is seen in Figure 1, which traces numbers of publications through the period as extracted from some 700 publications, again with a North American bias, from an annotated bibliography of porphyry copper geology in preparation. During the early period, exploration was "immature" in North America, that is, geologists looked for new districts and sites of the deposits. Outcrops were sought that carried the signatures of former mineralization and regional controls related to structural geology were closely studied. In the later period, North American exploration had "matured" into a study of districts, rather than a search for them. As the studies of these ores intensified during the younger period concommitant with increasing demands for the metal, they did so with a broadened understanding of some habits of occurrence, of hydrothermal alteration, mineral zoning, petrology, and geochemical and geophysical signatures. In considering the importance of lease management and administration, I have decided to approach the topic, Lease Default and Eviction: Action or Reaction, as a three phase presentation dealing with mineral lease administration and management, past, present and future. Though the title may border on the dramatic, it illustrates the real consequences of alternative approaches to property management viewed from my experience in the evaluation, development and implementation of a number of such systems and services in my current position as president of Talco Group Corporation. First, though, let&apos;s take a moment and set the stage by giving a few actual examples of why a pragmatic approach is needed in this particular area.

Explosions of methane in coal silos and coal ships is an ever present hazard. Recent investigations have shown beyond question that considerable accumulations of methane do occur in coal storage silos and numerous recent explosions in coal transport shipping strongly indicates that the same conditions also exist in ship storage holds. Investigations have shown that the main concentrations of methane occur within the actual coal pile. Within this region normal silo and ship ventilation systems are ineffective. The main 1ine of defence is therefore to exclude potential sources of ignition or to place the coal in an inert atmosphere, or both. This paper presents the results of a methane survey of all operating silos in Western Canada. These results demonstrate that a serious and widespread hazard of explosion exists. This paper also discusses various methods by which this hazard may be reduced including methods of venti1ation, inertization, microbiological control and early warning systems.

When exploration shows a mineral deposit to be of importance, the subsequent work of defining the limits or boundaries of the ore body and preparing it for the extraction of the mineral is termed development (Young, 1946). In underground mining, development also connotes the work that is involved in opening up a deposit preparatory to stoping or productive operations. In this section, mine development is defined to include all studies and operations that will enable a sound evaluation of an explored ore body from the technical and financial standpoints. Though the ultimate objective of all mine development activities is the same, the scope and detail of these activities vary depending on the type of ore body (e.g., flat bodies, lenses and sheets, massive deposits, narrow veins, and bedded deposits), and the method of working the deposit (e.g., under- ground or surface methods or a combination of both of the methods). Therefore, the various contributions in section 3 address such topics as long-range planning, feasibility studies, and valuation for many types of ore bodies and different mining methods. This introductory review is divided into three major parts. In the first part, long-range planning aspects are briefly discussed with .an emphasis on current trends that affect mine planning. In the second part, an overview is provided of the contents in the mine development and valuation section. In the last part, remarks are made on the status, scope, and future of quantitative and computer methods in mine planning and development.

INTRODUCTION Drift design problems in caving operations are a re¬sult of the geologic factors contributing to the overall success of the system, of the engineering factors dictated by economic and technical considerations, and of ore production practices. Combining these factors, a rational underground sup¬port system of rock reinforcement, light steel channel section or welded wire fabric, and shotcrete can be de¬signed based on rock fracturing, rock load, abutment loadings, ground movement, expected repair and desired flexibility. The design concept uses the effect achieved by restraining, reinforcing, and maintaining some of the intrinsic strength of the fractured rock mass composed of interlocked blocks of intact rock and rock fractures. Three different examples of drift support design in hypo¬thetical mines using the caving system are given. Caving is a system of underground mining where ore is extracted by means of gravity after the ore body is allowed to fail by removing support from underneath. The rock mass of the ore body fractures and flows ver¬tically downward to let gravity do as much work as pos¬sible. Caving differs from many other mining systems in that blasting is used only to initiate the rock mass failure by removing the rock supporting the ore but not to break the ore itself. The initial movement of the rock mass dur¬ing failure and the consequent crushing and grinding during the continued movement serve to reduce the ore to particles of a manageable size, with only limited sec¬ondary blasting necessary. The broken ore is extracted from the bottom of the failed rock mass through funnels of some sort pre-excavated in the rock. Ore extraction must continue or the swell of the broken rock will even¬tually fill the cavity and stop further rock mass failure and movement. The excellent general discussion on block caving in the SME Mining Engineering Handbook (Julin and Tobie, 1973) adequately covers the principles and application of this type of underground mining. Many rock mechanics aspects of block caving have been covered by others (McMahon and Kendrick, 1969; Swaisgood, et al., 1972; Mahtab and Dixon, 1975; King, 1946) and will not be reviewed further. Maintaining the stability of production drifts is one of the most troublesome problems plaguing the mine manager in a caving operation. Many factors contrib¬ute to drift support problems, and identifying the causes of instability and producing a reasonable support design are two steps toward achieving stability consistent with the mine plan. This chapter sets forth a technique for the design of support systems for production drifts in caving opera¬tions. The basic support system elements employed are rock reinforcement, welded wire fabric, and shotcrete. Recognized as contributing to the design are the factors of rock load, additional load from mining activity, rock fracture characteristics, repair expected, and flexibility. It must be emphasized that the drift must first be stabilized as for a tunnel, and the additional strengthen¬ing for mining-induced loads cannot contribute to the initial premining stabilization, or the reserve of strength is used up. MINE PLANNING The efficient mine planning engineer not only must satisfy the economic, human, and environmental aspects of his task but must also consider the mechanical con¬sequences of his plan. The problems created for the mine by placing parallel drifts too close, by crossing drifts on different levels with inadequate, if any, separa¬tion, and by installing connections and crossovers in the haulage plan without regard for the effective spans cre¬ated, are only a few of the problems a mine planning engineer can create for himself and the mine. The effect on immediately adjacent mine areas when an area is caved is important to drift design because the removal of vertical support from a rock mass causes the weight of that rock mass to be shifted elsewhere. The adjacent rock mass will carry this load and reach a new equilibrium with the applied stress. The advancing front of stress increase that results from caving (and many other mining systems) is generally called the abutment load and is the increase in stress over the gravity or tec¬tonic stress that already exists, as shown in Fig. 1. In general, the abutment load will be similar in nature to the stress change found around an opening in rock and will be taken as causing an increase in the vertical prin¬cipal stress, due to an approaching caving boundary, so that

In the last decade or so, the importance of effective preventive maintenance controls and practices has taken on a new and accelerated emphasis. Advances in technology and changes in equipment and product designs impose more precise and demanding standards of quality, productivity and customer service at a very rapid pace. Daily, it is becoming more apparent that in order to fulfill current requirements, existing manufacturing practices and associated control programs must also be upgraded and expanded. This is particularly true in the field of maintenance services. As production and quality standards become more demanding, effective equipment maintenance takes on more importance and becomes more difficult to sustain. In modern plants, the failure of a single equipment component can shutdown a complete production line causing interruptions to operating and shipping schedules that result in costly downtime, dissatisfied customers, and reduced profits. These costly experiences can be minimized with an effective maintenance program that provides maximum equipment reliability and minimum downtime and readily adapts to revision and change. There has been a phenomenal increase in production of coal from opencast mines in India. At the same time environmental problems caused by mining are receiving greater atttention. Deterioration in ambient air quality due to increased concentration of suspended particulate matter (SPM) in and around an opencast project is a major problem. Some measured values of SPM level around opencast mines in diff coalfields show that in many cases the TLV of 500 ug/m^3 is exceeded. The impact of dust emission from a mining project on surrounding areas are estimated by using computer models for air pollution dispersal but such treatment suffers from errors in predicting the dust load and failure to take into account the terraced nature of the opencast mine site. The haul roads have been identified as the most prolific source of dust and some recent trials on haul road dust consolidation in Indian mines are mentioned in the paper. Statistics regarding pneumoconiosis cases in Indian coal mines for the last decade are presented to show an increase in reported cases and a gist of the recently amended regulations on the subject of precaution against dust is mentioned.

With the radical reduction in price of computer hard- ware and software during the last decade and an associated increase in memory capacity, the concept of continuous conveyor monitor is now a reality. Coal gasification solid residue (slag) contains unconverted carbon (char), which is considered an impurity for utilization applications of slag. Under this study, table concentration was used to process approximately 24,000 pounds of a nominal-3.4 mm gasifier slag (-85% ash) to separate high (-100%) ash slag from low (-50%) ash char. The results indicated a nearly ideal separation of the slag from the char for sizes coarser than about 1 mm. An overall slag yield of 71 % was obtained. The slag was sufficiently clean to be used as feed material for the production of expanded lightweight aggregate. The recovered char had an ash content of about 47% and was a nominal -1mm in size.
