The Goldstrike autoclave plant is designed for the pressure oxidation of 1363 t/d (1500 stpd) of refractory gold ore. The plant was commissioned in early February 1990 over a one week period - an unusually short period for a plant of this complexity. The rapid plant start-up is attributed to certain detailed design and control aspects of the plant. This paper discusses key features of the autoclave plant with emphasis on the design of the splash/flash system of heat recovery and the control systems. Commissioning and plant operations over the first three months are reviewed.

A systematic study was carried out to investigate the reduction reaction mechanism of oxygen on pyrite surface using electrochemical techniques. The polarization curves showed two distinct regions, the Tafel region for superoxide formation and limiting current region for diffusion of dissolved oxygen to form hydrogen peroxide. These results were confirmed with a-c impedance measurements.

Mining project investment concerns the installation of mine capacity for the purpose of generating a stream of future economic benefits. In order to make this type of investment decision, the optimum specifications for the project must first be determined. Then, the economic justification of the investment tin be evaluated based on these specifications. Economic evaluation to guide mining project investment decisions is based on a proposed plan for mining the deposit over its operational life. If single point estimates are made of deposit characteristics and environmental parameters* as the basis for assessing a future stream of economic benefits associated with the investment, a future mining-plan can be optimally fitted to these estimates and, to the extent that such estimates are actually realized, this plan will retain optimality.

Nassau County, New York, is undertaking several projects to improve the water quality in the Western Bays of Long Island. A major step forward will be the completion of the Bay Park Conveyance Project, which will divert most treated effluent away from the Western Bays to an existing ocean outfall at the Cedar Creek Water Pollution Control Plant. The ongoing works include 3.6 miles of microtunneling, 7 miles of sliplining, 14 shafts, and a 75 MGD pump station. This paper provides an overview of the design and an update on construction progress through December 2022. The project is a collaborative effort between Nassau County, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, the design-builder, and various consultants.

Statistical studies at Cyprus Pima Mine indicate that samples from 22 blastholes are necessary for determining average copper grades, within a desired range of precision, for mine-model blocks by arithmetic averaging. The average number of holes in such blocks is 14. Many considerations show that more holes will not be drilled for sampling. A way to determine block grades more reliably than by" arithmetic averaging was sought. Thus far arithmetic averaging has proven to be the best procedure for the particular operation characteristics despite the small number of samples. It naturally follows that expenditure of great effort in sampling blasthole cuttings is unwise.

A method of hand-calculating the air-cooling requirements of a conceptualized underground mining operation is presented for the reader's orientation. Separate air heat load calculations were conducted for adiabatic compression, electromechanical equipment, wallrock, broken rock, groundwater, and blasting operations. The air heat sources were calculated for four mining levels under conditions representative of a typical planned mining operation at depth. The total heat gain on each level will approximate the level air-cooling requirements. The results of these hand calculations can be further modified by the use of mine ventilation computer software that refine the heat-source calculations, predict underground ambient air temperatures, and establish the air-cooling requirements of a mine. INTRODUCTION The principal mining method employed is a modified vertical crater retreat (VCR) blasthole operation. Typical scopes range from 20 to 40 feet wide, 75 to 100 feet long, and 100 feet in height. Six and one-half inch blastholes are drilled with an "in the hole" hammer drill. Eight-foot high horizontal rounds are blasted down. Mucking of ore from the undercut to orepass is done with LHD equipment operated from a remote control station. Backfill includes hydraulically placed tailings with cement, and waste rock when available. Stope access is from ramp sub-levels on 50-foot vertical intervals. Crosscuts are ramped down to the first stope cut 25 feet below the sub-level elevation. Then the crosscuts are raised by taking down the back when each stope cut is completed, until an elevation 25 feet above the sub-level is reached. The crosscuts are filled with tailings, and/or waste rock. See Figure 1. Typically, a two-pronged approach to defining the air-cooling requirements is conducted. First, the principal sources that make up the air heat load are individually hand-calculated. Second, projections of mine heat load are calculated by utilizing computer modeling techniques. This paper discusses the first method (hand calculations) of determining the individual components of heat flow into the mine. CALCULATED AIR HEAT LOADS Adiabatic Compression The plans for the mine include delivery of 300,000 cfm of air to ventilate the lower level operation. This is equivalent to approximately 200 cfm/ton of rock produced (300,000 cfm/1500 tpd of ore and waste). As air flows down a shaft, with no heat interchange between the shaft and air and no evaporation of moisture taking place, the air is heated in the same way as if it were compressed in a compressor. Dry air increases in temperature about 5.4°F per 1000 feet. One BTU is added to each pound of air for every 778 feet of decrease in elevation, or is subtracted for the same elevation increase. For dry air, the dry-bulb temperature change is 1/(0.24 x 778) = 0.00535°F/ft., or 1°F/187 ft. elevation. Auto-compression may be masked by the presence of other heating or cooling sources, such as shaft wallrock, groundwater, air and water lines, electrical facilities, etc. The major factors influencing the temperature of the air delivered underground by a shaft are (1) the night time cool air temperature's effect on the rock or lining of the shaft, (2) temperature gradient of ground rock related to depth, and (3) evaporation of moisture within the shaft which increases the latent temperature and decreases the sensible temperature. [Calculation For Adiabatic Heat of Compression] a. Assumptions: 1. Three hundred thousand cfm of fresh air at 3000 level has increased in temperature during the summertime to the point where it has little available cooling power. Air-cooling will be required on 3000 Level and below. 2. Elevation of 3000 Level is approximately +1000 ft. above sea level.

History of the feldspar industry in the United States has been summarized by DuBois (I)*. The earliest production of feldspar in the United States is reported to have been from Mitchell County, North Carolina, about 1744, with the product shipped to England, In about 1825 several pegmatites were worked to a limited extent in Connecticut, with the production shipped to England. The first feldspar grinding facility was constructed about 1850 in Connecticut, with chaser mills used. Feldspar has been produced continuously in the United States since about 1870. Feldspar is produced from the following states: North Carolina, California, Georgia, Connecticut, South Carolina, South Dakota, Kansas, Oklahoma, Virginia, Arizona, and Wyoming. Total United States production for 1969 will amount to approximately 900,000 tons. The most current published figures for world production is 1966, at which time 2,165,000 tons was produced. It is estimated that world production of feldspar for 1969 will amount to 2,410,000 tons. Historically, feldspar has been produced by hand sorting and hand cobbing of coarse block feldspar obtained from the intermediate and wall zones of zoned pegmatites. In the United States the reserve of known block feldspar, recoverable by hand sorting is nearing depletion. More emphasis is now placed on feldspar sources contained in finer grained rocks, especially coarse granites or fine-grained pegmatite and beach, dune, and river sands from which the feldspar is obtained by beneficiation.

In 1988, at the request of members of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration (SME) Inc., the president of SME formed Working Party No. 79, Ore Reserve Definition. Its mission was to develop guidelines for the public reporting of exploration information, resources and reserves. These guidelines were published in the April 1991 issue of Mining Engineering,(pp. 379-384), and as a document entitled "A Guide for Reporting Exploration Information, continued on an ad-hoc basis until 1996. When blowing ventilation is used on a mining section, a machine-mounted scrubber is often required to maintain face dust levels below 2 mg/m3. Operation of the scrubber also affects airflow patterns at the face and the dilution of liberated methane. Reductions in scrubber flow can result in increased methane concentrations. During mining, loading of the scrubber filter with dust is likely to reduce airflow. Detecting changes in scrubber flow is difficult, especially with extended cutting, because the machine must be operated from a remote location. Tests were conducted to demonstrate how scrubber airflow could be continuously monitored at a remote location. Three variables, static pressure at the fan inlet, differential pressure across the scrubber filter, and scrubber fan motor current, were continuously monitored while the scrubber filter was incrementally loaded to reduce air flow. The results show that monitoring each variable provided a way for estimating scrubber flow.

The 1997 Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC) was held at the Mirage Hotel, Las Vegas, NV. The RETC is a biennial event jointly sponsored by SME and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). Conference attendance was 573 members, nonmembers and students, an increase of seven attendees from the 1995 conference in San Francisco, CA. Exhibitors occupied 51 booths at the Las Vegas RETC. The 1997 conference encompassed 58 presentations in 15 sessions. Participants were given details on achievements and advances that have resulted in new design solutions, alternative work practices and increased productivity within the industry. The page at the end of this article tells how to get your copy of the RETC proceedings, either hardbound or on CD-ROM. Or, if you wish, for the first time a CD-ROM is available with the complete RETC proceedings from 1972 to 1997. This two-disk, archival volume has key-word search capability, is in portable file format and is compatible with PC and Macintosh platforms. RETC program sessions included design and planning, ground support, tunnel boring machine (TBM) case histories, conventional excavation, new technology, difficult ground, geotechnical, shafts and raises, future/special projects, new Austrian tunneling method, international projects, soft ground case histories and water and gas. The degree of fragmentation obtained in primary quarry blasting has always been a factor in the speed of digging' the muckpile This paper will discuss a case history of increased production and associated lowered costs from increased fragmentation. The quarry under discussion is fairly new, located in Georgia, and is in the large operation .category. Loading is done by three yard shovels, and, primary crushing by a 48" x 60" haw crusher preceded by a 5' wide feeder. The stone is a hard granite gneiss, of Los Angeles rating 22, and apparent specific gravity is 2.68. The product is shipped to points in that state for railroad ballast, concrete aggregate, and road building stone. Inasmuch as fairly large shovels and a large Jaw were to be utilized, initial drilling and blasting were pointed toward producing fairly large sized muck for this large equipment. This was following a concept somewhat in vogue for some years in the Southeast wherein many large equipment plants would tend towards larger fragmentation, and smaller equipped plants would conversely tend toward attempts at smaller sized rock piles for smaller shovels and crushers.

The viability of physico-chemical purification methods such as selective, flocculation for the separation of two components having similar chemical compositions and the same crystal structure but different surface properties is demonstrated. A loss of selectivity was observed in a dolomite-dolomite mixture when polyethylene oxide (PEO) (five million molecular weight) was used us the flocculant. Heteroflocculation was minimized using a low molecular weight PEO (MW =105) as a site blocking agent (SBA). Near complete separation was achieved at pH 10.5 at the 100% recovery level

Simulating a ventilation network of an underground mine can help in solving complex ventilation systems with many features, selecting proper fan specifications, location and settings. Early computer systems running simple network simulations were able to provide solutions to the most common and immediate problems regarding underground mine airflow. The more advanced systems available today can perform more sophisticated modeling and simulation of a mine?s ventilation network and present their results in a more understandable and easy to communicate form. This paper presents a ventilation network case study from an underground mine. All aspects of mine ventilation network modeling and simulation are discussed as well as the results from the simulation process. The algorithms and techniques used are thoroughly explained. Some useful guidelines for the application of ventilation network software are also provided in the text.

T e mechanization of industry to reduce labor costs and to improve product quality is affecting he scale industry as it has affected many other industries. With increased emphasis on higher production rates many operators are experiencing difficulty in overcoming production problems where weight is a factor. Unfortunately, the scale industry has not shown the development over the last twenty-five years that other instrument industries have. For centuries the balance scale has been the standard and the workhorse of most weighing operations. In recent years considerable effort has been applied to designs to make balance scales more acceptable to industries employing automatic or semi-automatic processes. For the most part the designers have not attempted to replace the basic scale but toautomate functions of material handling and human judgement. Modern dump scales, for example, will accept material from a conveyor until a preset amount of material is on the scale, At this time the scale turns off the conveyor, dumps the load of material and repeats the operation with any desired timing. These improvements have helped industry. Even the scale observer has been replaced with devices which observe the scale reading and operate on weighed objects according to their weights. In spite of' the application of automation to the material handling, the balance scale has not been completely satisfactory. One reason for this is fairly evident when one considers the construction of the scales. Inherently, they are slow devices because of the inertia of the beams. The beam scale, primarily a static measuring device, is at the best limited to slow dynamic measurements.

Examination of the economics and environmental consequences associated with phosphate fertilizer production documents the necessity for development of innovative production technologies. Evidence of phosphate ore's susceptibility to microbial alteration indicates that it will be an ideal candidate for industrial-scale bioseparation. There are at least two applications for the biosolu- bilization technology: (1) an industrial-scale bio- process similar to the presently used wet acid process and (2) production of small prills (bio- bead) containing unprocessed rock phosphate and the biological ingredients necessary to promote phosphate solubilization. At the present stage of development, the biobead technology is the preferred application. It is an energy-efficient "green" technology that will dramatically reduce the amount of solid waste and air emissions produced by the phosphate industry.

Maximum fan efficiency can only be obtained when the fan has the correct combination of size, speed, and blade setting to provide the required flow of air against the mine resistance. As the mine grows older, resistance decreases unless old workings flow is restricted, and new combinations of speed and blade setting or different fan sizes may provide greater economy.

Benchtop experiments were performed, in which an electric field was used to enhance separation of water from phosphatic clay suspensions from a central Florida mine. A constitutive relationship was established that relates the increase in solids content to operating time and the applied electric field. An upper limit to the degree of separation was found to be a function of electric field, and the time required to achieve this limiting value was also a function of electric field. The energy requirement for removal of water ranged from 1.25 to 175 Wh/kg water removed as a function of the electric field. A mathematical model was developed that provided good agreement to the experimental values and served to validate the constitutive relationship.

The design of comminution circuits and the evaluation of alternatives should be based on state-of-the-art equipment and appropriate design criteria - considerations that are often neglected by today's designers. This paper critically reviews common circuit designs, evaluates various alternatives for difficult-to-treat ores, and discusses the factors that should be considered when developing new plant designs or auditing existing plant performance. Data obtained from laboratory, pilot and plant-scale test work on a wide range of ores and circuits are used to justify the author's conclusions.

When using perlite as an insulation, it is important to determine the requirements for different applications as this influences the processing of the perlite. In cryogenic application, perlite properties of low density and fine particle size are desirable, while loose fill insulation applications require similar properties and water repellency. However, in perlite insulating concrete applications, a coarser particle, of higher density, is required to provide improved compression strength. The essential properties of perlite including particle size, density, and surface treatment are discussed in relation to the various insulation applications. Also, typical mineral processing and manufacturing techniques are reviewed.

Considerable movement is afoot internationally to rationalize standards and regulations relating to valuations and the qualifications for valuation professionals. In July 2000 the International Valuation Standards Committee released expanded standards, and additional important improvements are planned by 2003. Possible updates to the International Accounting Standards (IAS) and potential adoption of IAS by the United States could significantly impact minerals appraisers. Standards designed specifically for mineral asset valuation are under development in Canada and the United States, with Australia's internationally respected VALMIN Code providing the benchmark. In the United States, the all-encompassing Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) is annually modified and continues to gain deeper acceptance, while the SEC holds fast to its 1981 rule prohibiting reporting of a quantitative estimate and value for non-reserve mineralization. Some important international trade agreements are driving actions to free the trade in professional services. In July 2000, an international workshop was held to initiate discussion on minimum qualifications for appraisers to work internationally. Pressure for uniform minimum qualifications and rules for professionals internationally will continue to build. The United States is historically among the slowest countries to implement such initiatives, with its state level licensure barriers having the potential to cause some of its professionals to be stranded in an international backwater. Structural change is needed in Australia's VALMIN Code to remove conflict with the latest International Valuation Standards. The mineral valuation standards developers of Australia, Canada and the United States should work jointly on updating VALMIN for global use.
