Cerro de Pasco Corporation operates five large base metal mines in Peru having a combined production of some three million tons of ore a year. An integrated complex of concentrators, smelters and refineries produces annually about 25,600 short tons of copper, 48,100 short tons of lead, 60,500 short tons of zinc metal, 102,300 short tons of zinc concentrate, 8,272,000 ounces of silver and substantial amounts of bismuth, cadmium and selenium. Geology plays an important role in these operations. The organization of detail geologic work in and around the Cerro mines was set up by John M. Boutwell in 1918 and a geology department was established in 1920. Growing through the years, the department technical staff now numbers over thirty men and. their work covers all phases of geological investigations. Many outstanding geologists of the past and present, too numerous to name here, have studied and contributed to the knowledge of the deposits and the ever growing list of Cerro "alumni" must rival that of any other mining organization. Numerous papers on the geology of Cerro's mines can be found in the technical literature and several doctoral theses have been presented on Cerro subjects as indicated in the attached bibliography, Specimens of Cerro's ores can be found in museum, college and university collections throughout the world. Yet, as with all mines and mining districts, the geologic knowledge of Cerro's deposits in Peru is being revised and added to constantly. This presentation cannot hope to cover adequately all the phases of the geology and mineralization. For a more complete background and discussion of the mine you are referred to the bibliography. Here I shall outline only briefly the more important geologic features and describe some of the newer developments of recent years The credit for the data presented here belongs to the many geologists who have worked or are now working for Cerro de Pasco Corporation, but I must assume sole responsibility for any omissions or variations in the interpretation of their work.

In different nonferrous metal-producing industry sectors, the impurity element iron has to be removed from the process solution. Examples for the arising residues are jarosite or goethite precipitates from nickel or zinc production but also red mud from aluminum production. Regardless of environmental concerns, the material is landfilled in almost any case, although valuables such as indium, silver, nickel, or zinc are present in considerable amounts. Within the presented research, a low carbon dioxide emitting multi-metal recovery from such iron-containing residues by means of a selective chlorination extraction has been fundamentally evaluated by experiments but also by comprehensive thermodynamic calculations. The paper summarizes the thermodynamic fundamental concept exploited to separate the dominating iron matrix from the valuable elements and shows verification experiments in a lab size of several grams. Through thermodynamic calculations and smallscale experiments with pure metal oxides and sulfates, it has been proven that the metal chlorides AlCl3∙ 6H2O, FeCl3∙ 6H2O, and MgCl2∙ 6H2O are viable and effective reactants for chlorination. In trials with actual industrial iron precipitation residues from the zinc industry, especially, the use of MgCl2∙ 6H2O and FeCl3∙ 6H2O leads to high extraction rates for the investigated valuable metals Ag, Au, Bi, Cu, In, Pb, Sn, and Zn.

Bacterial populations play an active role in mineral weathering in subsurface and near-surface environments e.g., supergene enrichment of Cu at Morenci, AZ. An in vitro bacterial biofilm model was used to examine the interaction between Sporosarcina ureae and ionic gold (which is toxic) or amino acid-gold complexes in gold mobility. The immobilization of ionic gold was between 80-90% for 1 week but as the available, cellular reactive sites became saturated immobilization decreased to 14% within 2 weeks. In the asparagine-gold system, gold immobilization occurred at a high rate (80-90%) throughout the experiment with limited toxicity towards Sporosarcina ureae.

This paper and four other papers on the MEQB Regional Copper-Nickel Study, presented today at the 1980 SME-AIME Fall Meeting are based on four years of extensive inter-disciplinary research and impact analysis supported largely by the Legislative Commission on Minnesota Resources. This study produced over 180 technical reports, the results of which are summarized in an Executive Summary available from the Minnesota State Planning Agency, St. Paul, Minnesota. Those wishing to examine the many scientific, engineering, environmental, social or economic issues addressed by the study are encouraged to obtain a copy of the executive summary. The executive summary includes a bibliography of all technical reports produced by the Regional Copper-Nickel Study and describes the five-volume, 26 chapter Regional Copper-Nickel Study Report.

INTRODUCTION In the spring of 1988 the Joint Venture of Freeport-McMoran Resource Partners, Limited Partnership, IMC Fertilizer Inc, and Homestake Mining Co. was awarded the sulphur lease for Main Pass Block 299, lease number OCS-G 9372. This was one of eleven leases awarded to the Joint Venturers. Following the initial discovery wells in December 1988, a program of delineation drilling confirmed proven sulphur reserves of 67 million long tons. Proven, recoverable oil and gas reserves are 39.4 million barrels and 7.2 billion cubic feet, respectively. Development of the sulphur mine was given approval as a fast-track project by the Joint Venturers in 1989. The oil and gas reserves were acquired from the original hydrocarbon lessee in 1990 and given fast- track status immediately. Fast-track for these projects meant design and engineering would not be complete before construction began JOINT VENTURE The Main Pass Joint Venture is one of thirteen joint ventures formed between Freeport and three other companies - IMC Fertilizer, Inc., Felmont Oil Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Homestake Mining Co., and Texasgulf Minerals and Metals Co. Felmont has subsequently changed its name to Homestake Sulphur Co. and Texasgulf assigned their interests in the three leases they participated in to their parent company. Texasgulf did not participate in the Main Pass 299 joint venture. Joint venture negotiations, anticipating a lease sale in mid-1988, began in December of 1987. This Joint Venture was the first of its kind; created to acquire offshore leases, explore, develop and mine sulphur. The Minerals Management Service announced a lease sale date of February 24, 1988 on the first business day of 1988. This greatly accelerated the joint venture negotiations. Of the thirteen leases the Joint Ventures bid on, eleven were awarded. Freeport holds its interest in all the leases through its ownership interest in Freeport-McMoRan Resource Partners, Limited Partnership, and Resource Partners is the operator on all of the leases. The Main Pass joint venture percentage ownership is: 58.33 Freeport-McMoRan Resource Partners 25.00 IMC Fertilizer, Inc. 16.67 Homestake Sulphur Co. 100.00 The Main Pass Joint Venture paid $3,401,757 for the Main Pass lease and will pay a royalty of 12.5 percent of production value to the MMS . LOCATION The Main Pass mine complex is located in the Gulf of Mexico, in U. S. federal waters, about 27 kilometers (17 miles) east of Venice, Louisiana or 140 kilometers south east of New Orleans, Louisiana. It is situated in about 63 meters (210 feet) of water. HISTORY The Minerals Management Service (MMS) of the United States Department of the Interior administers the mineral properties of the United States located in federal waters. Periodically the MMS holds lease sales of blocks under its jurisdiction. Prior to the offshore discoveries of sulphur associated with salt domes leased for hydrocarbons, the MMS leased blocks with all minerals including hydrocarbons awarded to the successful bidder for the block. In room and pillar mining a large number of working points are arranged to follow a mining pattern. Geological and roof control problems can be overcome or their effect minimized by varying this pattern. Longwall mining on the other hand, fixes the mining pattern for anyone panel. This aspect of longwall mining leads to constancy, so that a well-conceived organization, ventilation, dust and roof control systems lead to daily repetition and subsequent simplicity of control. All the same, a fixed mining pattern calls for a very careful consideration and selection of design parameters. (Ref. 1.)

The starting powders' physicochemical properties and consistency are essential for technical ceramic products to meet their performance specifications. The need for finer and more consistent powders has opened new technologies for synthesizing powders from atoms and molecules. However, submicron and near-micron powders obtained from conventional comminution and classification techniques are still competitive. This paper shows several examples from electronic ceramic applications of how we can use powder characteristics for micromanaging by design the ceramic properties such as the green and fired densities, slurry rheology, shrinkage during sintering, and the microstructure of the sintered bodies. The cross-disciplinary nature of the technology requires that the researcher not only should have a firm grip on the fundamentals of one or more disciplines, but also should be generally aware of the intricacies of other disciplines as well.

Silver has been a much maligned metal in recent years. In the last three and a half years the price has fallen from around US$7.00 -$7.80 to as low as $3.50 this spring. It has consistently under-performed most other precious metals in the past few years, and has fallen to its lowest levels since the late 1940s in inflation-adjusted terms. Perhaps this is beginning to change. Since April, silver prices have outperformed gold and platinum. While this may continue in the years ahead, key questions remain regarding the pace and timing of any future silver price advances. I want to talk about the supply and demand factors that have led silver to its recent position. Also, I will outline a possible path for silver supply, demand, and prices for the next several years. Before I dive into my discussion of the silver market, allow me to explain who I am. One of the points we always make to clients early in a relationship is that, when you are listening to someone's opinions, you always must remember who it is you are listening to, and why he might be saying whatever it is he wants you to hear. So often, people take opinions from brokers, traders, or investment advisors as gospel truth, never stopping to ask themselves two key questions: Is there any reason to believe that this person knows what he is talking about, and, second, is he trying to sell me something, in telling me this.

Certain bituminous coals are known to contain appreciable quantities of natural fossil or subfossil resin. Such resinous coals are found in the western US, particularly the Wasatch Plateau coalfield of UT. Some of the seams in this field contain an average of 5% resin. This fossil resin has been recovered by gravity and/or flotation processes since 1929. Resin concentrates thus produced are of low quality and are usually refined by solvent extraction. The purified resins are of commercial importance in the adhesive, coating, rubber. and ink industries, etc. An improved flotation technique has been developed which involves ozone conditioning to selectively float resin from high-volatile bituminous coal. Ore and waste cannot always be visually separated. The distinction between ore and waste may need to be made on the basis of blasthole sampling. Hand drawn dig limits or computer-generated contour lines do not account for uncertainty, economics or equipment. Geometric methods for interpreting grade information such as the polygonal or triangulation methods share the same limitations as contouring. Geostatistical techniques exist for the realistic modeling of grade variations and uncertainty. Decision analysis techniques exist for the binary classification of ore, and waste blocks in the presence of this uncertainty. Block-by-block classification is not enough; mining equipment cannot exercise free selection of blocks. There is a need for procedures to determine optimal dig limits that account for (1) the uncertainty in the grades, (2) the economics of risk-qualified decision-making, and (3) the ability of the mining equipment to dig to specific limits. This paper presents a procedure for optimal determination of dig limits that account for these constraints. Simulated annealing (SA) is used with modest computational requirements because the number of variables is relatively small. The solution of the optimization problem is dig limits that maximize profit under multiple constraints. The method is illustrated with different constraints and tested against hand drawn dig limits in a "Dig Limit Challenge," which illustrates the efficacy of the new method.

Laboratory conducted cutting tests at traverse speeds up to 1 m/s have been undertaken with high pressure water jets assisting the cutting action of drag tools. Four sandstones and one limestone have been investigated, which represents a wide range of compressive strength. Variables investigated include water jet pressure, nozzle diameter, depth of cut, traverse speed, jet position, and tool bluntness. The test programme has allowed a model to be developed which describes the action of water jet assistance for three conditions dependent on the ability of the jet to penetrate the rock: where no significant penetration occurs, where penetration is greater than 50% of the tool depth, and an optimum condition around 30% of tool depth.

The search for a more effective means of coping with methane liberation has resulted in the expanded use of seam degasification. Its advantages are measured not only in reducing the hazards due to methane, but also in producing a marketable commodity, the gas itself. However, the success of a methane drainage system is the culmination of many complex factors, the most important being the coal seam permeability. The two most popular drainage techniques used in mining today are the vertically stimulated borehole method and the in-seam horizontal borehole method. The objective of this paper is to determine the permeability range in which the selection of the degasification technique is based primarily on equipment and economic analysis. A discussion of the equipment involved will be incorporated into examples evaluated by the Pennsylvania State University coal methane simulation model.

This article examines some important trends in East-West trade in non-fuel mineral products, in particular the recent decline in Eastern bloc exports of such products. It relates this decline to an improvement in Soviet terms of trade; a deterioration of geological and locational conditions in Soviet mineral production; an increased integration of the CMEA-countries based on a regional pooling of resources; and a surge in demand for mineral commodities in Eastern countries coupled with a slowdown in Western economic growth. Finally, it evaluates to what extent these determinants may evolve in a different direction during the eighties and thus foster East-West mineral trade. Eastern1 bloc trade in mineral products is a subject of perennial interest in the West. When exports increase, there is much talk of the dangers of dependence on the East for critical fuels and materials. When imports increase, talk turns to the danger of Soviet dependence on Western supplies. A common fear is that the USSR may not only seek to meet its own resource needs but also deny the access of Western countries to these resources. This paper, like three other recent additions to the lite5ature on Soviet foreign trade of commodities2, tries to put matters in clearer and cooler perspective. The first section evaluates the structure of East-West mineral trade and tries to identify some important trends of recent years. The second section relies on supply and demand factors, as well on the Comecon connection (the intra-Council for Mutual Economic Assistance mineral cooperation) to explain why there has been a reversal in the mineral trade trend since the end of the seventies. The last section evaluates the factors which could stimulate East-West mineral trade in the future.

The application of statistical analysis software programs has proven useful for investigation of rockfall runout distance along a designed slope. Rockfall modeling programs are continually being upgraded with more sophisticated analysis tools, such as the use of the rigid body versus lump mass models. Engineers at mine sites utilizing the software may have varied experience related to these models, their associated input parameters, and how to interpret the generated results. To address this concern, researchers at the Spokane Mining Research Division (SMRD) of the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) investigated the influence of slope height, slope angle, slope material, and rock size for both rigid body and lump mass models in a 2-D statistical analysis program. Based on a literature search and industry input, specific ranges common to that of an open pit mining environment were chosen for each of the input parameters to determine 90% rock runout distance as well as their sensitivity to change. Data collected from this numerical analysis and simulation will be compared to empirical rockfall data gathered through the duration of the Highwall Safety project conducted by NIOSH from 2022–2026.

In recent years, market rates of interest have risen well above their historical long-term average. Also during this period, the short-term variability of interest rates has been greater than in prior years. Interest rates have a significant effect on the operation of our economy. They influence the extractive industries in a number of ways. Their major long- range impact is on investment decisions - specifically the valuation of mineral deposits. An understanding of the factors that influence interest rates is important to the engineer or businessman who makes the investment decisions for the mining company. The effect of changes in the market rate of interest on the value of mineral reserves is critical to the future financial success of the mining enterprise. The most common simplification of the factors determining the level of interest rates is that they are a function of the demand for and the supply of money. While this is an oversimplification, most businessmen would be hard- pressed to provide a better explanation. The purpose of this paper is to explore certain fundamental economic aspects of interest rates and to examine their effect on the analysis of investment in mineral deposits.

The Longwall Strata Control and Maintenance System (LoSCoMS) is designed to monitor shield pressures in real-time from longwall faces and to provide on-line information related to underground strata behavior and longwall mining operation. The information includes shield pressure data with statistical analysis of setting, developing and final pressures, prediction of shield pressures for the following shift or day, etc. and maintenance data on the shields. The LoSCoMS has been installed and tested at Shoal Creek Mine operated by Drummond Company, Inc. The system is providing valuable information to mine operators for better understanding of underground behaviors. As a result, it has become an effective tool for minimizing ground control hazards and reducing out of seam material.

For the African continent promoting a sustainable utilization of its mineral resources could be considered as a key determinant to fight against poverty. Sustainable development performance indicators for measuring the economic, environmental and social impacts of mining activity are necessary for drawing up policies and sectoral actions, identifying and controlling risks, identifying and implementing sustainable development actions, negotiating between stake-holders, improving mine production, etc. To respond to this need, the SIGAfrique Network proposed to develop a joint decision support tool entitled the African Mining Observatory (AMO) and, to this end, develops a system of indicators to be integrated within the SIGAfrique database. The development of both the OMA and the indicators is based on a participatory method within the working groups, which comprise experts/participants from the 13 SIGAfrique partner and observer countries (Guinea, Burkina Faso, Mali, Tanzania, Niger, Mozambique, Kenya, Uganda, Senegal, Angola, Madagascar, Ethiopia, and Mauritania).

Platinum group metals (PGM) are often found in close association with arsenide and sulfarsenide minerals in copper-nickel bearing gabbroic rocks. Major losses of platinum in flotation have been attributed to the susceptibilities of the arsenic minerals to oxidation and subsequent losses of their recoveries in cleaner flotation stages. The use of a nitrogen atmosphere in grinding and in flotation, the effectiveness of activation for improving their floatabilities, and the role that electrochemical interactions play not only between grinding media and minerals, but also among different minerals, are discussed.

Minor elements determined by atomic absorption spectroscopy include: zinc, cadmium, copper, cobalt, nickel, chromium, manganese, and iron. Of these elements, only three; zinc, cadmium, and copper are found to have been introduced with the ore-forming fluids. Iron, manganese, chromium, and nickel were increased in dolo-stone lithologies when compared to limestone lithologies. The uniform distribution of cobalt suggests this element was neither increased nor decreased during ore emplacement nor during dolomitization of the rocks. Zinc increases adjacent to ore result from leakages into open spaces rather than as pervasive aureoles surrounding ore bodies.

NTRODUCTION In the mining industry, a "drill jumbo" is a drilling unit equipped with one or more rock drills and mounted on a mechanical conveyance. Jumbos range from single¬drill ring drills mounted on simple steel skids to sophisti¬cated multiple-drill units mounted on diesel engine powered carriers and equipped with automatic controls and sound-abatement cabs. Individual types of jumbos usually are designed for specific tasks such as fan drilling in sublevel caving operations. Some units, such as development jumbos, can be utilized for several functions in addition to their normal applications, e.g., for production drilling in room-and-pillar operations, stoping in cut-and-fill mining, etc. Mine operators can purchase individual components from manufacturers, assembling these components into a jumbo suitable for specific conditions. However, this requires that mine personnel have good engineering and mechanical abilities. Although manufacturers of jumbos maintain facilities for designing machines to meet con¬ditions created by new mining methods and unusual ap¬plications, the cost of the engineering and experimental work for new types of jumbos should be evaluated in terms of both costs and benefits; it may be advantageous to plan the mining operation so that existing and proven units can be utilized. GENERAL SELECTION CRITERIA Since the operating conditions vary in underground mines, the design of a jumbo must be selected to cope with the individual characteristics of the mine. The necessary considerations include access space into the working areas, grades expected to be encountered, radii of the curves, ambient temperatures, the characteristics of the rock, the acidity or alkalinity (pH rating) of the mine water, etc. Access to Mine Workings The mine workings must be accessible to the selected jumbo. Frequently, a jumbo must be disassembled at least partially to pass through the mine shafts. There¬fore, a bolted construction allowing disassembly into pieces of suitable size and weight is desirable in most applications. Type of Undercarriage Generally, a crawler-type undercarriage should not be used in trackless mines having acidic mine water. The acidic water causes an electrolytic action between the individual crawler parts and causes rapid corrosion and early failures. Propulsion A two-wheel drive on a pneumatic-tired jumbo is marginal for grades exceeding 12%. A four-wheel drive unit with good weight distribution is capable of operat¬ing on grades of up to 35%. At least 30% of the gross vehicle weight (GVW) should be carried on the steering axle; otherwise, the steering tires may not have sufficient traction on loose road surfaces and may "plow" instead of steer. To assure stable operation in mines with steep grades, the height of the center of gravity of the jumbo should be considered. It should not make the unit prone to rolling over on the steep grades that may be encoun¬tered. Turning Ability In confined working areas, a skid-steering or crawler unit has the best maneuverability. An articulated carrier is preferable when base-rotated parallel booms are being utilized. A rigid-frame jumbo with automotive steering is compact and economical, having lower maintenance requirements than the other two types. However, the turning radius of a rigid-frame unit is wider than either the skid-steering or articulated units, and this wider turning radius may be detrimental in mines with narrow drifts. JUMBO COMPONENTS Rail Undercarriages A mine with a rail-transportation system generally utilizes drill jumbos that are mounted on rail-type under¬carriages. With a light load and good weight distribu¬tion, this carrier may consist of a simple two-axle four-wheel platform onto which the boom-mounting brackets are attached. As the depth of the round and the penetration rates increase, the weight of the equip¬ment installed on the chassis also increases. The greatest problem with a heavy overhung load is balancing the carrier; a three-boom unit may require a substantial amount of counterweighting to maintain an acceptable 70% to 30% axle-load balance. Although lengthening the wheelbase helps balance the unit, a long wheelbase increases the turning radius, often creating problems on curves and sometimes requiring a swivel truck-type chassis. A good rule of thumb for a simple four-wheel undercarriage is to maintain a wheelbase length to track gage-width ratio that does not exceed 2.5 to 1.0. For a larger ratio, a swivel truck should be utilized. Swing-out outriggers or roof jacks help keep a jumbo in place during the drilling cycle. Usually, a rail-mounted jumbo is not self-propelled. Instead, it is maneuvered into place by a locomotive. Occasionally, several headings are being advanced in close proximity, and a self-propelled jumbo is con¬venient. In electrified mines, such a jumbo utilizes conventional battery-powered traction gear; in dieselized mines, hydrostatic drive components offer good flexi¬bility.
