The semivariogram is one of the most important tools available to the geostatistician for the analysis of mineral deposits. To be complete, a semivariogram study must include a minimum of three parts which are highly interdependent. These are: calculation of the semivariogram, mathematical modeling, and geologic interpretation. The known factors and conditions which controlled or influenced the distribution of mineralization within the body being studied should be considered in the analysis .of the semivariogram. The presence and characteristics of successive phases of mineralization, the chemical and physical properties of the host rocks and the mineralization should all be considered. This requires close and continued communication between the geologist and the geostatistician prior to and during the semi-variogram study. Geologic stationarity is needed if meaningful semivariogram results are to be obtained. The first step is, therefore, to determine whether the mineralization can be analyzed as a whole or if different geologically homogeneous sections must be defined and evaluated separately. Different methods can be used to calculate an experimental semivariogram from known sample values. The method chosen will depend not only on the anticipated and actual statistical properties of the deposit, but also on its geologic characteristics.

INTRODUCTION Paradoxically, it has been found that the people who are the most aware of the origin, mineralogy and composition of bauxite are also the people who are the least aware of how bauxite composition affects its treatment by the Bayer process. These people are the exploration and mining geologists normally associated with aluminum producing companies. The purpose of this paper is to give some idea of how the concentration and physical nature of the different minerals found in bauxites affect the operation of the Bayer process used to extract their alumina content. The bauxites we will consider here will be only the tropical bauxites such as occurring in Jamaica, various countries in South America i.e. Guyana, Surinam, Brazil, African bauxites, Malaysia and in Australia. When we speak of the Bayer process, it will be the North American version of the Bayer process using low caustic concentrations and bauxite digestion temperatures varying between 130° to 250°C. TABLE 1 shows the minerals and elements of interest occurring in tropical bauxites. The minerals and elements listed in the table do not by any means represent all of those identified in bauxites. Using mass spectrographic analysis on six bauxites from different geographic locations, we managed to identify between 50-60 different elements. Fortunately, only about 13-14 of these elements possess the necessary chemical properties to be able to accumulate in caustic Bayer solutions. The remainder are either not attacked, or form insoluble reaction products with some main liquor component, i.e., hydroxide, aluminate or carbonate, or reprecipitate with alumina trihydrate during the precipitation stage.

Slope stability in open pit mines is governed by rock structure, rock quality, ground water conditions, blasting, pit geometry and excavation method. Of these factors, the control of ground water pressures often represents the primary tool to improve slope stability. Production equipment has recently been used to stabilize two slide areas by dewatering using blasthole drills for vertical holes and secondary drills for horizontal holes. This paper describes both of these dewatering programs and contrasts an earlier slope stabilization program that employed a subcontracted horizontal drill.

The recent developments in refractory precious metal ore processing (Bio-oxidation, Autoclaving), and the revitalization of the more traditional roasting processes have attracted great attention in recent years and are indeed the focus of todays symposium. It must always be remembered, however, that the term refractory ore by definition means that the material 'must be capable of being treated at a profit". Given the high cost of the refractory processes, the requirement to be treated at a profit requires very close scrutiny during the evaluation phase of the property development. The M.G.M. film company has the latin motto Ars Gratia Artis meaning Art for Arts Sake. Ingeniatore Gratia Ingeniatoris (a very crude attempt at saying Engineering for Engineerings Sake) should not be the motto for mining companies intent on exploiting refractory gold deposits, but rather the wittily tilted heading for this paper "Take the money and run like a thief". The following hypothetical case studies show that the high technology solution is not always the best financial solution.

Vibratory hand-tools can produce Hand Arm Vibration (HAV) Syndrome in their operators. This disease, often called Vibration White Finger, can cause varying levels of hand-arm discomfort and, in severe cases, impairment. In addition to the human suffering, there are also significant economic repercussions for industry. These include reduced operator efficiency, lost time through increased absenteeism and increasing compensation awards. In the mining industry, jackleg rock drills are a particularly troublesome source of hand vibration exposure. As a result, a significant amount of work has focused on redesigning rock drill handles to minimize hand-transmitted vibration. This paper details the results of a study undertaken to determine the effectiveness of using elastomer covered ("cushioned") handles in place of the standard steel design. The results indicate that, for a particular cushioned design, the overall acceleration level experienced at the hand-handle interface can be reduced by as much as a factor of three, relative to the steel handle. It is also shown that this reduction takes place predominantly in the frequency range above 500 Hz, with performance improving with increasing frequency. Qualitative evaluation of the cushioned handles by the drill operator indicates a significant increase in comfort over the standard steel handle.

This paper is the first preliminary report on the bauxites and terra rossas of the Caribbean. It concentrates on the islands of the Greater Antilles, and for reference purposes the Yucatan Penin- sula is included. At this point, observations made in Jamaica, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic are compared with reported information on Puerto Rico, the Bahamas, Cuba, the Cayman Islands, and the Yucatan Peninsula with regard to occurrence, as well as physical, chemical, and mineralogical composition. From this, an attempt is made at classifying the types of bauxites in the Caribbean, indicating the best reserves estimates, and the process ability of these bauxites. Some suggestions are also provided to fuel the controversy over the likely source material(s) or origin of the Caribbean bauxites.

Most mines using backfill routinely carry out quality control (QC) testing of backfill mixes with unconfined compression test cylinders. This is true for paste operations, hydraulic fill operations, and cemented rockfill operations worldwide. However, a large number of mines simply do not prepare and test the backfill samples in a consistent manner and fail to properly analyze or interpret the test results. Conventional concrete test criteria are not applicable given the differences in the mix constituents and the fact that a large number of the backfill QC test cylinders typically fail to achieve the target strength. Standard industry practices are needed to improve the analysis and interpretation of QC test results and to provide a better means of determining if the backfill is achieving its intended target strength. This paper will attempt to lay the groundwork for standard industry practices and will address several key questions raised by operators, such as how laboratory test data compares to in-stope performance, and how many QC tests should fail before a red flag should be raised. INTRODUCTION Although paste backfill is widely used throughout the mining industry, cemented rockfill (CRF) remains as the backfill of choice in places like Nevada where very poor ground conditions mandate the use of underhand mining. The safety and stability of undercut entries beneath backfill is a function of the quality of the cemented fill, which is typically assured through routine quality control testing. In the absence of a backfill quality standard, most mines rely on concrete standards to design and interpret their backfill quality control programs. In the USA, these standards are developed and published by organizations such as the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) and the American Concrete Institute (ACI). However, the application of these standards to cemented backfills can be very difficult owing to the high degree of variability in backfill mixes and the resulting variability in test results. To illustrate, the concrete industry standards denote that an acceptable (passing) test result occurs when the average strength of the duplicate test cylinders exceeds the target strength and no single test result deviates from the target strength by more than 10% (ACI 214R). Remedial measures must be taken if three consecutive tests fail. With mine backfills, it is safe to say that these criteria are rarely achievable. A further, more dramatic example is the accepted coefficient of variation for concrete QC cylinders. According to ACI 214R, the coefficient of variation (CV) should range from below 3% (excellent rating) to above 6% (poor rating). However, if this analysis method is applied to several backfill QC databases from operating mines, coefficients of variation are calculated on the order of 50%. Clearly, there is a need to develop better industry practices for assessing the quality of mine backfill and to assist mine operators with the interpretation of test results and the development of action plans in the event of undesired outcomes.

In different nonferrous metal-producing industry sectors, the impurity element iron has to be removed from the process solution. Examples for the arising residues are jarosite or goethite precipitates from nickel or zinc production but also red mud from aluminum production. Regardless of environmental concerns, the material is landfilled in almost any case, although valuables such as indium, silver, nickel, or zinc are present in considerable amounts. Within the presented research, a low carbon dioxide emitting multi-metal recovery from such iron-containing residues by means of a selective chlorination extraction has been fundamentally evaluated by experiments but also by comprehensive thermodynamic calculations. The paper summarizes the thermodynamic fundamental concept exploited to separate the dominating iron matrix from the valuable elements and shows verification experiments in a lab size of several grams. Through thermodynamic calculations and smallscale experiments with pure metal oxides and sulfates, it has been proven that the metal chlorides AlCl3∙ 6H2O, FeCl3∙ 6H2O, and MgCl2∙ 6H2O are viable and effective reactants for chlorination. In trials with actual industrial iron precipitation residues from the zinc industry, especially, the use of MgCl2∙ 6H2O and FeCl3∙ 6H2O leads to high extraction rates for the investigated valuable metals Ag, Au, Bi, Cu, In, Pb, Sn, and Zn.

This paper is not written to "break new ground" in computer applications; it is just a treatment of how an operating metal mine utilizes a mainframe computer for planning, analyzing, and reporting on the ventilation and cooling systems. The Unisys mainframe computer at the mine site is used in programs that analyze the ventilation network, keep records on various ventilation installations, calculate the results of measurements and produce reports on ventilation conditions in the working places and on the main air distribution, and plan and analyze the cooling system. All the programs are interactive to terminals. There are a series of data files that are generated by some programs which may be used by other programs. Most of these programs have been developed in-house. The computer is also used as a word processor via a vendor-supplied text editing program to produce memos, letters, and to keep up-to-date lists of equipment used.

Cerro de Pasco Corporation operates five large base metal mines in Peru having a combined production of some three million tons of ore a year. An integrated complex of concentrators, smelters and refineries produces annually about 25,600 short tons of copper, 48,100 short tons of lead, 60,500 short tons of zinc metal, 102,300 short tons of zinc concentrate, 8,272,000 ounces of silver and substantial amounts of bismuth, cadmium and selenium. Geology plays an important role in these operations. The organization of detail geologic work in and around the Cerro mines was set up by John M. Boutwell in 1918 and a geology department was established in 1920. Growing through the years, the department technical staff now numbers over thirty men and. their work covers all phases of geological investigations. Many outstanding geologists of the past and present, too numerous to name here, have studied and contributed to the knowledge of the deposits and the ever growing list of Cerro "alumni" must rival that of any other mining organization. Numerous papers on the geology of Cerro's mines can be found in the technical literature and several doctoral theses have been presented on Cerro subjects as indicated in the attached bibliography, Specimens of Cerro's ores can be found in museum, college and university collections throughout the world. Yet, as with all mines and mining districts, the geologic knowledge of Cerro's deposits in Peru is being revised and added to constantly. This presentation cannot hope to cover adequately all the phases of the geology and mineralization. For a more complete background and discussion of the mine you are referred to the bibliography. Here I shall outline only briefly the more important geologic features and describe some of the newer developments of recent years The credit for the data presented here belongs to the many geologists who have worked or are now working for Cerro de Pasco Corporation, but I must assume sole responsibility for any omissions or variations in the interpretation of their work.

For the year 1985, the U.S. coal industry produced 881 million tons of bituminous coal and lignite. Domestic consumption amounted to 814 million tons. The electric utilities consumed 689 million tons, almost 85 percent of total consumption, over 78 percent of production. In May, 1986, the NCA forecast that with moderate growth rate averaging 1.9% per year from 1985 through the year 2000, production could reach 1,176 billion tons and domestic consumption 1079 billion. The estimate for electric utilities indicate 924 million tons for the year of 2000, about the same percentage of production and consumption as now experienced. Before we consider the main topic of this paper, the cost of using high sulfur coal, let us examine the coal use patterns of the last 25 years, the changes in those patterns and consider the reasons for those changes. Table I shows those changes.

Many portions of the mining industry are under intense pressure to reduce costs while commodity prices languish. In response, global Internet-based marketplaces to deliver business-to-business (B2B) e-commerce solutions are being established to reduce costs and improve efficiencies across the mining industry supply chain as well as with customers. Over time these marketplaces will likely evolve to create an integrated supply chain solution, layer in value-added services, and develop mining community portals with industry content. Significant opportunities to help reduce costs and create value are available in mining e-procurement as well as in on-line product sales. The supply chain for the industry is highly fragmented and many mining companies have numerous inefficiencies in procurement. An e-procurement marketplace (or "exchange") can immediately address these inefficiencies and offer numerous benefits to buyers and suppliers. These benefits include improved sourcing options, inventory cost reduction, transaction cost reduction, access to value-added services, lower customer and supplier acquisition costs, improved reach, and improved information flows.

Introduction Recognition of Coal Workers' Pneumoconiosis (CWP) as a major occupational disease has affected various aspects of the coal mining industry in the United States as well as in almost all major coal producing countries. Regulations related to the control of coal mine dust forced mine operators to modify their mining and ventilation practices. As the coal production record of the last 15 years shows, this had both direct and indirect impacts on the productivity and production costs. To identify the causes of CWP, many research efforts have been made through- out the world. Most of these studies were epidemiological in nature, attempting to pinpoint exposure and seam variables that affected the incidence of the disease. Other studies have been oriented toward the elemental and mineralogical composition of the coal dust in the mine atmosphere and in the miners' lungs. These studies indicate that there may exist some relationships between the characteristics of the coal mine dust and the prevalence of the disease. Some of the variables that are thought to affect the occurrence of CWP are the mass of the dust in the working place, the rank of the coal, the existence of certain trace elements, the free silica content of the coal, and the existence of other minerals in the respirable dust. A more complete description of these previous re- search studies has appeared elsewhere (Mutmansky and Lee, 1984). The behavior of particles in the human lung is known to be governed by their aerodynamic diameter, which is defined as the diameter of a hypothetical spherical particle with unit density that exhibits the same settling velocity as the given particle. Because of this fact, the aerodynamic size distribution of coal mine dust is one of the parameters to be determined along with the other physical, elemental, and mineralogical characteristics. The objective of this paper is to establish a strategy for providing coal mine respirable dust samples for characterization purposes using instruments that classify according to the aerodynamic diameter. In addition, several findings concerning characterization methods will be presented. Introduction The objective of the design and operation of a mine is to make as much money as possible within certain reasonable and responsible constraints. The imposition of constraints on the objective of maximizing profits can result in an optimum mine design. This paper deals with the maximization of profits. Optimization will be discussed in a future paper. In the mining industry, it is generally accepted that the maximum economic recovery is defined by identifying the reserves and the sequence of mining that results in maximum net present value (NPV) or discounted cash flow-rate of return (DCF-ROR), as indicated in Fig. 1 (see Lemieux, 2000). Current parametric analyses techniques, such as varying the mining costs; profit reservation; sales price or metal content, to define pit limits and mining sequence technically referred to single, double or triple parameterization, do not assure that the curve in Fig. 1 will be maximized. In defining the sequence, the first material to be mined should be the first grouping of recoverable mineral that has the highest after-tax unit value and that forms a feasible mining unit. The assumed mining of the first pit should be followed by the assumed mining of the second most profitable and practical pit or pit expansion. If this process of grouping and sequencing is followed until the profitability approaches zero, the general sequence required to extract the maximum economically recoverable reserve is identified. The curve in Fig. I is constructed by calculating the NPV for a series of sequences, each assuming operations are terminated on successively lower profit pits. If the operation ceases on a pit with too high of a profit, opportunity is lost, and the NPV is lower than the maximum. The NPV curve peaks and then starts to decline before the zero-profit pit is assumed mined. This occurs because the money invested in advanced stripping would have produced a greater return if it was invested at the dis¬count rate. The maximum economically recoverable reserve is defined by the pit limit corresponding to the maximum NPV or DCF-ROR. Pit and phase definition The real challenge of reserve definition is identifying the phasing and after-tax profit per ton, so that the curve in Fig. 1 can be plotted. The after-tax profit cannot be properly addressed until after the pits are designed, the production is scheduled and the cash flow is estimated. Throughout the years, many investigators have ad¬dressed this problem. A major thrust of the famous paper in which Lerchs and Grossman (1965) presented their algorithm was to identify a sequence that would produce a result similar to that identified in Fig. 1. Whittle's (1988) four-dimensional analysis is designed to address this issue. The author addressed this same issue in a paper presented to the 1968 Canadian Institute of Mining national convention (Lemieux, 1968). Without a relatively simple methodology to con¬struct the curve in Fig. 1, the number of iterations in a trial-and-error method becomes prohibitively burden-some. The pit designer seeks a simple pit-planning parameter that will serve as a proxy for the after-tax profit per ton used in defining the curve in Fig. 1. The designer's goal is to apply this pit-planning parameter using standard pit-wall location techniques to design a series of pits that will provide a guide to the sequencing. Common techniques used to position pit walls are strip-ratio limits, highwall incremental analysis, floating-cone methods or "maximizer" applications1. Costs, revenues, noncash charges, taxes and profits are usually structured on a unit basis for use in the pit-wall location analysis. Application of the proxy parameter using the pit-design tools should, ideally, result in the definition of pits and sequences that will maximize the curve in Fig. 1. 1 The pit-design tool frequently referred to in the literature as an "optimizer" defines a pit boundary that maximizes the value contained within based on the input parameters and the safe pit-wall angle. The optimization of the pit design involves selection of rate of production, cutoff grade, product quality and other considerations. These considerations constrain the maximization of value. Therefore, pit-design tools that maximize value should be called "maximizers."

Bacterial populations play an active role in mineral weathering in subsurface and near-surface environments e.g., supergene enrichment of Cu at Morenci, AZ. An in vitro bacterial biofilm model was used to examine the interaction between Sporosarcina ureae and ionic gold (which is toxic) or amino acid-gold complexes in gold mobility. The immobilization of ionic gold was between 80-90% for 1 week but as the available, cellular reactive sites became saturated immobilization decreased to 14% within 2 weeks. In the asparagine-gold system, gold immobilization occurred at a high rate (80-90%) throughout the experiment with limited toxicity towards Sporosarcina ureae.

As a result of higher levels of production and greater depths the underground mining industry in the UK is encountering hotter climates in some workplaces. It is widely known that high heat and humidity in an underground workplace will result in reduced performance and may also seriously impair the health and safety of the workforce. It is therefore of paramount importance that the underground environment can be effectively predicted in order that sound decisions can be made to reduce the effect of climate on working personnel. Over the years numerous computer programs have been developed to predict the climate in underground mines. One such important program, developed by McPherson, is CLlMSlM TM which is a prediction model of heat and mass transfer along a single roadway. This paper describes the development of a computer model, called DRIVE, to predict the climate in single entry drivages. This program incorporates the theory established by McPherson for the development of CLlMSlM TM. This involves the algorithm for unsteady state heat transfer. Throughout the development of DRIVE underground measurements have been taken to correlate the program. DRIVE will predict the changes in psychrometric and thermo- dynamic conditions along the drivage depending on a number of parameters. Firstly, the type of auxiliary ventilation system employed such as forcing, exhausting, overlap. Secondly, the addition of heat and moisture due to autocompression, machinery, strata, fissure water, oxidation, broken rock, fallen rock, refrigeration equipment, lighting, personnel, service water. Thirdly, due to the velocity of the air.

Due to the world's ever increasing minerals and energy demands, process plants have to cope economically with ever growing throughput rates. This trend has accelerated the development of high capacity vibrating screens. Screens with screening areas of 30 to 50 square meter (322 to 540 square feet) and width of 5.5 meter (18') are technically possible and are being used presently with great success. This paper will concern itself with the general aspects of large screen design, by using modern technology and the latest findings with regards to fatigue strengths relative to the laws of vibration. It also will investigate the technical and economical limits of such designs.

This paper and four other papers on the MEQB Regional Copper-Nickel Study, presented today at the 1980 SME-AIME Fall Meeting are based on four years of extensive inter-disciplinary research and impact analysis supported largely by the Legislative Commission on Minnesota Resources. This study produced over 180 technical reports, the results of which are summarized in an Executive Summary available from the Minnesota State Planning Agency, St. Paul, Minnesota. Those wishing to examine the many scientific, engineering, environmental, social or economic issues addressed by the study are encouraged to obtain a copy of the executive summary. The executive summary includes a bibliography of all technical reports produced by the Regional Copper-Nickel Study and describes the five-volume, 26 chapter Regional Copper-Nickel Study Report.

An important issue in the use of high pressure grinding rolls when grinding ores is wear of the rolls. Due to the abrasive nature of the ores, significant wear rates have typically occurred. Attempts to address the wear problem require a better understanding of the wear mechanisms. A probable wear mechanism is the abrasion of the rolls surface due to extrusion of the compacted material as it leaves the rolls. This paper presents the results of a study on a number of ores to examine the extent of extrusion that occurs. The study involved laboratory, pilot and full-scale high pressure grinding rolls. The effect of variations in parameters such as grinding pressure, rolls speed, initial gap settings, feed topsize and moisture was investigated. The results indicate that extrusion increases with increasing grinding pressure and rolls diameter, while the use of studded or profiled rolls significantly reduces the extrusion effect compared to smooth rolls. It was also found that rolls speed and feed moisture can have significant effect on extrusion, depending on the material.
