The US Bureau of Mines investigated germanium and gallium extraction from an ore containing 0.089% Ge and 0.036% Ga. While previous researchers concluded that a reducing agent, such as SO2 is needed to extract germanium and gallium from such ore, this research showed that high extractions (87% Ge, 97% Ga) were possible using sulfuric acid alone, if the acid concentration were properly controlled. This control was achieved using a two-stage countercurrent leach circuit. Microprobe analyses revealed that the non-extracted germanium is in solid solution with quartz, and therefore cannot be leached with SO2 or sulfuric acid.

Longwall mining is the most productive method of under- ground coal mining in the United States (US.), and record levels of production have been reached in recent years. These ever-improving production levels have the potential to generate significantly higher quantities of respirable dust. Consequently, the longwall industry continues to struggle with controlling dust liberation and maintaining compliance with the federally-mandated respirable dust standard. In response, longwall operators have in- creased the application of primary dust controls, airflow and water flow, in an effort to improve respirable dust control and reduce worker exposure. Pittsburgh Research Center (PRC) personnel conducted dust surveys at 13 longwalls operating throughout the U.S. and collected information to: identify current operating practices on these longwalls, identify the types of dust controls in use, document the levels at which these controls are being applied, and measure the respirable dust levels present. This data was analyzed to quantify the dust levels generated by the major sources on the longwall section and to evaluate the relative effectiveness of the control technologies in use.

The microseismic method of detecting instability and high-stress zones in underground mines was first developed in this country by the US Bureau of Mines in the early 1940's (Obert and Duvall, 1957). Early laboratory experiments showed that when competent rocks are stressed in a testing machine, the rock noise rate (number of rock noises per unit time) increases with increasing applied stress. This increase is more pronounced as the ultimate strength of the rock is approached. Subsequent testing of rock noises in underground mines confirmed this laboratory experience and much effort has been directed in recent years to make use of this property to develop a practical method of predicting rock failure. Investigations conducted in the Coeur d'Alene district mines have pointed out a definite relationship between the stress buildup in a rock mass caused by mining activity and the emission of audible and subaudible seismic activity (microseisms). In 1968, a concentrated joint effort by USBM Denver Mining Research Center and American Smelting and Refining Co. at Asarco's Galena mine was undertaken to verify several theories regarding the generation of microseisms (Blake, 1971; Blake, Leighton, and Duvall, 1974; and Kovacs, 1973). Findings indicate that (1) rocks under stress emit detectable seismic energy; (2) the energy source can be located using a triangulation method involving travel time differences to various receiving stations; (3) the rate of release of seismic energy increases with increasing stress; and (4) this increase in noise generally precedes a major rock failure (rock burst).

1.1 GENERALIZED METHODS OF SUPPRESSING THE INFLOW OF GROUND WATER DURING THE CONSTRUCTION OF SHAFTS, DRIFTS AND TUNNELS Various methods are used to prevent or minimize the inflow of ground water into underground workings during their excavation. The two most common methods include freezing the saturated rock and grouting using cement, sodium silicate, polyurethane and/or other chemicals. Each of these technologies for combatting the inflow of ground water is effective only under specific hydrogeological conditions. For example, although the freezing of saturated ground is among the more universally adopted methods, it is designed to provide only temporary protection during construction. Before the saturated rock thaws it is necessary to emplace a waterproof liner which is labor intensive, time consuming, and expensive. Consequently, freezing is used only in exceptionally complex hydrogeological conditions, namely in those cases where the water-bearing strata consist of unstable rock or the ground water has an anomalous hydrochemistry. The classical grouting of saturated rock, carried out from the surface or from the face of the underground workings for the purpose of limiting the inflow of ground water during excavation, utilizes both cement and a variety of chemical grouts. Cement grouting has been regarded as the main method of combatting the inflow of ground water in fractured rock throughout the world. In such countries as the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG), Canada, the Republic of South Africa and Great Britain, cement grouting is the main method of reducing the inflow of ground water during the excavation of mine openings. In Great Britain and the FRG, cement grouting has been used in 80% of all shaft excavations. In the Republic of South Africa cement grouting has been used in almost 100% of all the shafts that have been constructed. The installation of grout curtains into permeable water- bearing strata significantly reduces their permeability and increases the rock strength. Grouting has the greatest effect in fractured sandstones, certain well indurated shales, fractured granites, fractured quartzites, and karstic limestones or dolomites. The following principal factors must be considered when assessing the expediency of grouting rock with cement: the geometry of the network of fracture openings, the saturated hydraulic conductivity of the fractured rock, the hydraulic head acting on the water in the rock, and the chemical composition of the ground water. On the basis of the geometry of the fractures and the thickness of each hydrostratigraphic unit, the characteristics of the cement grout are selected. As a rule, the cementing of large fractured zones with high ground water velocities is carried out using inert fillers (sand, mill slag, loam, loess, crushed limestone), special types of cement, setting accelerators, and high cement concentrations in water. Calcium chloride, soda ash, sodium silicate, sodium nitrate, amino alcohols, tin bichloride, trisulphate nitrate, and lumnite are used extensively as the setting accelerators for cement grouts. In the FRG and Poland, special cement injection compounds that embody a mixture of cement and active cement metal salts, water additives and binding substances are being used for the cementing of saturated zones with rapid ground water velocities. These reagents accelerate the rate of structure-forming reactions. In spite of the wide variety of additives used for cement grouts, the effectiveness of the method in large fractures below the water table is either poor or it leads to a very large consumption of cement due to the erosion of the grout through the cracks before it hardens. At the present time, a large number of cement types and brands are being produced by various countries. These variations permit cementing to be employed in a variety of geological conditions. However, both pure cement grout and grouts with fillers constitute unstable systems with a high water loss rate. Therefore during the grouting of finely fractured rock the cement grout's premature loss of a large amount of free water causes its consistency to increase, whereupon the grout solidifies. Consequently, it inadequately penetrates into the fine fractures of the stratum. In addition the high water loss rate in the cement grout causes unreacted cement particles to remain, which greatly reduces the grout hardness and the resulting rock strength characteristics are weakened. As a result, the binding properties of the cement are utilized perhaps up to 60%. The remaining portion is left in the grout as a filler. All these conditions significantly decrease the efficiency of the isolation effort both with respect to strength and cost. In order to expand the cement grouting method, re- search is being conducted to improve the quality of cement grout, to increase its range of application with respect to permeability control, to reduce its water loss rate and to increase its capacity to withstand the erosive and corrosive effects of poor quality ground water. Restricted fields of vision are a common problem with underground mining equipment. Also, when lighting systems are provided, they may be positioned where they cause glare. This restricts the visibility around the machines even further. To help address these problems, the US Bureau of Mines has developed a PC-based software package to aid in the analysis of certain human engineering aspects of mining equipment design. The software is available for use by equipment manufacturers and mining companies for design work on new machines, as well as for evaluating proposed modifications to existing machines.

This paper presents an evaluation of tailings dam incidents from the 1994 USCOLD Tailings Dam Committee report. Comparisons are also made with water storage dam incidents from USCOLD reports and recent tailings dam incidents. The evaluation results show that tailings dam incidents are due to a number of factors including overtopping, static and seismic instability, seepage and internal erosion, and foundation conditions, and that no particular type of tailings dam or operational condition is more susceptible to incidents. In addition, the results confirm that tailings dams should be located, designed, operated, and reclaimed with a thorough knowledge of site conditions, mill operation, site monitoring, and tailings characteristics.

The Geomechanics Classijication (RMR System) (Bieniawski, 1979) was modified for entry and roof support design in underground coal mines. Adjustment multipliers were introduced to incorporate the influence of high horizontal stresses and the roof support reinforcement into the existing classification system. Sixty- two case histories of standing and fallen mine roof were collected from two mines in the northern Appalachian coalfield. Twenty-seven engineering and geologic parameters were recorded for each case. A partial correlation analysis was carried out on the cases to establish which parameters have a significant im- pact on the stand-up time of supported coal mine roof. Survival analysis, a statistical technique used in medical research to assess the effect of a drug or treatment on a patient's life expectancy, was conducted together with stepwise multiple regression to derive values for the adjustment multipliers. A practical example is included to illustrate the application of the modified Geomechanics Classification to underground coal mine design.

The never ending search for lower unit costs led Pima Mining Company's management to study various alternatives shortly after Expansion III was completed. It soon became apparent that a considerable amount of ore assaying 0.35% copper had to be moved in order to maintain mill feed at the desired 0.54% copper content, which is the overall grade of the ore reserves. Detailed investigations revealed that for a period of 8 - 10 years, about 14,000 tons per day of 0.30 - 0.40% copper ore would pass by the crusher en-route to the low grade stockpile. This ore is very hard, very clean and has to be mined at a relatively uniform rate. A six month pilot plant run testing autogenous and semi-autogenous grinding gave very encouraging results. Since no mining costs need to be charged to the extra tonnage (it had to be mined anyway) the only major costs would be against milling. The decision to proceed was made in August 1970 and Fluor-Utah was retained as the prime design construction contractor. Ore was first put through the new mill on December 29, 1971. By March of 1972 design tonnage of 14,000 TPD had been attained. The first three expansions at Pima Mining Company, 20 miles south of Tucson, increased mill capacity from 3,000 TPD to 36,000 TPD. These expansions included a separate, conventional, three stage crushing plant plus additions to the existing concentrator that primarily duplicated the then current flowsheet. Expansion IV, however, consisted of an entirely new and separate primary crusher and a completely new mill building located about 2,000 feet southeast of the 01 d concentrator. The new mill, using semi-autogenous grinding, produces scavenger and rougher flotation concentrates that are pumped to the old mill for regrinding, cleaning, thickening and filtration.

The beneficiation of barite has been the subject of many investigations at CANMET, thus reflecting barite's importance as an industrial mineral. Fifty-one studies relating to various aspects of beneficiation were conducted between 1920 and 1986, and a review of some of the more important studies is presented. The information, including mineralogy, beneficiation methods and results, flotation parameters, and reagent concentration data, is presented in tabular form. By so arranging the principal data, the research worker and production metallurgist will be assisted in the evaluation of barite ores from a variety of origins.

Research on roof bolting has developed significant information with respect to the functions that can be performed by properly installed bolts and the methods that can be used to ensure that effective installation has been achieved. The present paper brings together results that are pertinent to the design of a bolting system for reinforcing horizontally stratified mine roof with vertical bolts. The design approach is based on the use of bolts to decrease the maximum bending stress within an arbitrary sequence of roof strata (such as shown by figure 1) in which the only loads are the weights of the individual beds. The use of rock bolts to achieve other objectives, such as to stabilize a fractured rock mass on the periphery of a mine opening (3), is excluded from consideration herein.

"Diesel particulate matter (DPM) is an occupational health hazard in underground mines. It generally occurs in the submicron range, and is often present in the mine atmosphere with significant concentrations of dust particles that tend to occur in the supramicron range. Since dust can interfere with analytical methods to measure DPM, it is often removed from a sample stream using impactor-type size selector (diesel particulate matter impactor, DPMI). Because the DPMI physically removes oversized particles from the stream, its performance may be gradually reduced with aging. Sharp-cut cyclones (SCCs) represent an alternative size selector for DPM sampling applications, with a major advantage being that, by design, they should not be susceptible to rapid aging. This paper presents results of a field study designed to compare the performance of aged versus new/clean DPMIs and SCCs in an underground mine. DPMI aging resulted in clogging of the device, and eventually a reduction of its effective particle cut size – though, when sample flow rate was maintained, DPM sample mass collection was not affected until significant aging had occurred. Under the conditions present for this study, effects of SCC aging were observed to be minimal by the end of the study period. INTRODUCTION Submicron particles are increasingly recognized as significant respiratory health hazards (Cantrell and Watts, 1997; Kenny, et al., 2000; Ristovski, et al., 2012). Diesel particulate matter (DPM) represents a major source of submicron particles in both public and occupational environments (Kittleson, 1998; Abdul-Khalek et al., 1998). Due to their work around large equipment in confined spaces, underground miners have some of the highest exposures to DPM (EPA, 2002; Grau et al., 2004). DPM largely consists of solid elemental carbon (EC), commonly known as “soot”, and organic carbon (OC) that may be sorbed to EC particles (Kittleson, 1998; Abdul-Khalek et al., 1998). EC and OC can be measured by thermal-optical methods such as the NIOSH 5040 Standard Method (Birch, 2016), and their sum is referred to as total carbon (TC). While the complex nature of DPM does not allow for its direct measurement, both TC and EC have been accepted as suitable surrogates for monitoring occupational exposures to DPM (Noll et al., 2007 and Birch, 2016)."

Pyrite samples from twenty-one locations in the North Carolina Slate Belt were analyzed for cobalt, gold, mercury, and nickel by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The geographic distribution of relatively high values of certain trace elements in pyrite suggests that, in addition to gold, cobalt and nickel metallogenetic provinces are possible in the slate belt. Northwest trends of province boundaries may be genetically related to subsurface features rather than to surface geology. Within province boundaries gold and nickel exploration programs should be concentrated in areas containing intermediate to mafic tuffs, while cobalt may be more concentrated in argillites and phyllites.

Siderite ore with high phosphorus content was reduced isothermally at 1,050° C with pulverized coal and different dosages of sodium carbonate. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energydispersive analysis of X-rays (EDAX) were used to characterize the samples. The influence of sodium carbonate on the carbothermic reduction process was investigated. Sodium carbonate and its dosage played a considerable role in the carbothermic reduction. The iron particle size in the reduced ore was below 20 µm, and fayalite was abundant without sodium carbonate additive. With a mass ratio of Na2CO3-to-ore of 5% additive, the iron particle size in the reduced ore was generally above 50 µm, and the diffraction intensity associated with metallic iron in the XRD pattern increased. The effect of sodium carbonate on the phase transformation of fluorapatite during carbothermic reduction was also addressed via thermodynamic calculations and aqueous leaching experiments. The results showed that the fluorapatite was not reduced to P2 at 1,050° C, and a portion of the fluorapatite was converted to soluble phosphate. The reduction of siderite can be catalyzed by adding an appropriate amount of sodium carbonate. This catalytic activity was caused by an increase in the reducing reaction activity of FeO and the acceleration of the carbon gasification reactions. The decrease in phosphorous content in the iron concentrate was attributed to an improvement in the separation of the iron phase from the slag phase when sodium carbonate was added and with the formation of soluble phosphate.

In situ experiments at the Department of Energy's Nevada Test Site (NTS) have extended the technology of propellant-based fracturing to include liquid- filled, uncased boreholes. Previous work had developed the technology for liquid-free, uncased wellbores. Test results show that fracturing behavior is considerably more complex in liquid- filled boreholes than in the liquid-free case. Compared to liquid-free boreholes, liquid-filled boreholes have faster pressure risetimes and lower peak pressures, large hydraulic-type fractures propagating several meters beyond the end of the test zone, numerous oscillations in the pressure history, and variable types of fracturing within a single test region. Multiple fracturing is initiated in the wellbore of a fluid-filled borehole when the proper propellant mixture is used but, unlike fluid-free wellbores where up to eight fractures propagate, only one to three hydraulic- and/or shear-type fractures propagate. Hydrodynamic effects involving liquid compression during borehole pressurization appear to be responsible for the differing phenomena observed in fluid- filled boreholes.

The Bethlehem Mines Corp. is a captive mining subsidiary of Bethlehem Steel Corp. Its coal production is tied to the demands for and production of steel, a situation that has to balance between the following two extreme strategies: (1) either the mines are designed and operated for some optimum production level and the demand fluctuations within the steel corporation are met by supplementary corporate coal sales and purchases, or (2) the mines absorb all the demand fluctuations, regardless of the effects on mine costs. A rational definition of the best strategy between these extremes is, of course, needed but is very difficult to formulate in view of the complexity of the many factors that would have to be included in the analysis. Consequently, rather than setting profit targets for each given mining division and/or individual mine, the practice evolved to set production targets for producing specified tonnages of coking coal for shipments to the ovens located at the corporation's iron and steelmaking plants. This in turn leaves the mines with the dilemma of having to explain demand-related cost-per-ton fluctuations while essentially depriving them of the ability to control profit through tonnage optimization. In the early 1970's, the coal prices rose significantly, while other factors led to sagging productivity in underground coal mining. Thus, the role of Bethlehem's coal operations in the corporate profit picture gained in relative importance. This, in turn, sparked a closer attention to the coal mining cost structure and factors controlling productivity. At the same time, the drastic increase in the capital needed to open a new mine also increased the amount of planning required to minimize risks. All of this called for more well-defined, quantitative operating data. Bethlehem therefore launched, in the early 1970's, a number of innovative steps that, as the future may show, represented pioneering contributions to the growing sophistication of North American underground coal mine planning and management control practices. This case study describes the changes that led to the current implementation of a novel production reporting system at Bethlehem's coal mines. These changes took place in two distinctly different phases. The current system that resulted from the Phase II developments utilizes, of course, experience gained earlier and is expected to be amplified to incorporate more advanced concepts and technology as future experience dictates.

Utah's abundant industrial rock-and-mineral resources support a relatively small but important sector of the State's economy. In 1983, six of the top 10 nonfuel mineral commodities (by value) were industrial commodities. Portland cement was ranked fourth, potash fifth, halite sixth, phosphate seventh, construction sand and gravel eighth, and lime tenth. Portland cement was produced by three operators, principally from the Jurassic Twin Creek Limestone. Potash was produced by three companies from Pennsylvanian beds in the Paradox Basin, surface brine of the Great Salt Lake, and subsurface brines of the Great Salt Lake Desert. Halite was produced by eight operators, primarily from surface brine of the Great Salt Lake. Additional production came from salt beds in the Jurassic Arapien Shale, solution mining of the Pennsylvanian Paradox Formation of the Hermosa Group, and subsurface brines of the Paradox Basin. Phosphate was mined by one company from the Permian Meade Peak Phosphatic Shale Member of the Park City Formation. Construction sand and gravel were produced by dozens of operators, primarily from Quaternary Lake Bonneville beach and nearshore deposits. Lime was produced by four operators from Paleozoic formations in the Basin and Range physiographic province of Utah. The future production of these and other industrial commodities, though individually uncertain, is expected to increase gradually as a group. Factors favorable for the future of the industrial commodities industry in Utah include large to almost unlimited resources for the major commodities, a healthy projected population growth, an abundant local supply of relatively inexpensive energy from coal and natural gas, and a favorable corporate tax structure and business climate.

Laboratory tests were conducted to evaluate the silica collection efficiency of flooded-bed scrubbers with six different filter panel designs and at two operating velocities. Test results indicated that reductions in filter density negatively impacted respirable dust collection. Silica collection efficiency for the least dense filter was as much as 33 % lower than the collection efficiency of the densest filter. At the low operating velocity, the least dense filter allowed over 40% of the respirable silica dust in the scrubber intake air to pass through the unit, where it would be discharged back into the mine environment. Operation of the scrubber at the higher test air velocity increased silica collection efficiency, regardless of the filter panel tested. The density of the filter panels also impacted the quantity of air that is moved through the scrubber, with higher density filters reducing scrubber airflow. For each filter, the relationship between dust collection efficiency and air moving capacity must be considered to determine overall effectiveness for specific mine applications.

A process has been developed to recover gold and copper from two waste materials at the Bougainville Copper Limited mine in Papua New Guinea. It involves the bioleaching, in reactors, of a pyrite concentrate to liberate refractory gold and generate sulphuric acid, ferric sulphate and biomass for bacterial leaching of a chalcopyritic waste rock dump. Gold is to be recovered by cyanide leaching and copper by solvent extraction/electrowinning. The reactor bioleaching was developed in continuously operated reactors of 1 m3 capacity by CRA Advanced Technical Development at Cockle Creek, while the dump leaching was developed in 750 kg columns on site at Bougainville Copper Limited. The process was to be piloted on site.

A major bauxite belt was discovered and evaluated from 1969 to 1974 by P. T. Alcoa Minerals of Indonesia in West Kalimantan, Indonesia. The proven reserves of beneficiated bauxite are 800 million tons averaging 38.6% AA1203 and 3.0% RSiO2. Inferred reserves of washed bauxite are in excess of 2 billion tons. The bauxite occurs as capping of low lying hills which were formed during the post Paleogene peneplaination stage. The overburden varies from 0.6 to 3.8 meters and the nodular bauxite horizon from 2.2 to 5.2 meters. The deposits were formed by the in situ weathering of predominantly acidic and basic intrusive rocks.

Yesterday, air pollution was somebody else's problem -- today, it is everybody's problem. The coal industry with thermal coal drying, is aware of their problem and the necessity of doing an acceptable job; however, there is much to be said as to how good a job is required and what performance limits should be set up. American Air Filter Company has been one of the pioneers in the solution of the thermal coal dryer dust problems, Because of high moisture content, products of combustion and occasional temperature surges, only wet collection has been considered as the practical approach. Our first installation goes back some 12 years with a total to date of 29 Individual wet collectors, each, fabricated of suitable corrosion-resistant material, at 14 operating plants. To eliminate a potential air pollution problem, a performance requirement of not more than approximately one-quarter (1/4) grains per cubic foot in the dust collector discharge was used. In nearly all installations, operating performance surpassed requirements, but discharge stacks were not entirely free of discoloration. However, plant nuisance and air pollution complaints were eliminated. This satisfactory performance was accomplished by medium priced wet dust collectors operating at a 4-6" W.G. pressure drop with cater drain requirements of about 1 gallon of drain water per 1000 cubic feet of air exhausted.
