A methodology to detect the presence and monitor the stability of shallow cavities is presented in this paper. The approach incorporates surface-wave seismic and acoustic emission/microseismic (AEIMS) techniques. Application of tomography to the seismic data is made to enhance the ability to locate cavities. Zonal and hit-sequence location techniques are introduced into AE/MS monitoring schemes. These source location techniques simplify the analytical procedure yet still provide sufficient information regarding the region of AE/MS activity. The concept of unique velocity data for conventional, least-squares, source location routines is discussed. A hypothetical case utilizing the algorithm is presented. The method described has been successful based on preliminary studies. Areas of current and future research are identified.

Bound water plays an important role in the processing and utilization of numerous materials and mineral processing systems. The fundamental nature of this near surface bound (vicinal) water is yet to be understood in its complete detail. The objective of this paper is to use dielectric measurements to characterize the bound water near hydrophobic and hydrophilic oxide surfaces. It is anticipated that a combination of dielectric property measurements and characteristic relaxation times will allow for more effective analysis of the interfacial water.

This paper addresses the impact of declining world rutile resources upon the production of titanium products and their asso¬ciated costs. Titanium is used primarily for the production of pigments; in its metal form it is considered a strategic and critical material to the U.S. defense and aerospace industries. There are two major mineral sources for titanium: ilmenite and rutile. Both these mineral types can be used to produce titanium pigments. Only high grade titanium concentrates, such as rutile, high-grade ilmenite, and synthetic rutile (which is produced through further processing of ilmenite), can be used in the production of titanium metal. This paper draws upon the data and analyses of a recent Bureau of Mines Minerals Availability Program appraisal that evaluated the international availability of titanium from market economy countries. The paper will show that production from economic rutile mines will decline sometime after the turn of the century and that rutile shortages could be alleviated by production from other high-grade titanium resources such as higher cost rutile deposits and anatase deposits, or through an increase in world synthetic rutile capacity.

This paper outlines a unique case of the development of strategies to reduce ventilation and heating costs in Konsuln iron ore mine in northern Sweden. The mine, located just south of Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara Aktiebolag’s Kiruna iron ore mine, was developed as a test mine from 2018-2020 for the Sustainable Underground Mining (SUM) project. Besides functioning as a test mine, Konsuln also contributes to ore production. The existing mine ventilation system was designed for the current production rate of 0.8 million tons per annum (Mtpa). There is a plan to increase this rate to between 1.8 and 2.0 Mtpa.

Lithium-ion battery pack fires pose great hazards to the safety and health of miners. A detailed experimental study has been conducted at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD) to investigate the effectiveness of different fire suppression systems on Li-ion battery pack fire extinguishment. Tests were conducted in a well-ventilated container. Two sizes of battery packs (12V, 24V) were heated by heater strips to trigger thermal runaway and fire. Water mist with different flow rates, ABC powder, type D dry chemical, and water mist with F500 additives were used as the fire suppression agents. Multiple thermocouples were installed on the battery packs to measure the temperature evolution during the tests. The results indicated that the water mist with F500 additives is the most effective suppressant among the agents tested. Dry chemicals, however, do quench the fire for a moment, but cannot prevent re-ignition of the battery since they do not provide enough cooling. The findings of this paper can be used to develop safer battery fire suppression techniques in mining environments.

Geochemical models using published thermo-dynamic data and laboratory derived kinetic rate laws allow prediction of post-closure pit lake geochemistry at open pit mining sites. A combination of "forward" and "inverse" modeling techniques can predict the pit lake geochemical evolution from initial infilling to eventual steady state attained decades or centuries after closure. Computer codes have been developed to model chemical reactions such as pyrite dissolution, describe the ground-water flow regime, and provide rock-water ratios. The incorporation of site specific information, such as ultimate pit dimensions, geologic and hydrologic data, acid generating potential (AGP) vs. acid neutralizing potential (ANP), and laboratory derived kinetic rates, allows application of the model to open pit mines at any stage of development.

Literally thousands of new flotation agents, both collectors and modifiers, have been proposed for sulfide and non-sulfide flotation over the past six decades since the beginning of the use of soluble surfactants in flotation. In stark contrast, the number of flotation agents used in practice is small. Xanthates and fatly acids, along with a few well-recognized modifiers, dominate the industry. Three major questions will then arise: a) are there truly specific needs in the industry that call for chemistries that are different from those used currently ? b) if yes, given the track record in the industry, what is the likelihood that such different chemistries will ever be used and to what extent ? and c) is more research into developing new chemistries necessary ? A critical assessment of flotation agents in general is made in this paper to provide answers to these questions and to identify the major factors that are responsible for the large disparity that exists between flotation reagent research and commercial usage.

Tests were conducted to assess the potential of column flotation for beneficiation of a talc ore from Montana. This ere contained approximately 80% talc, with the gangue comprised mainly of chlorite, silica, and dolomite. A tributylamine, MIBC, and sodium silicate reagent suite proved effective for talc flotation. Rougher-cleaner column flotation in a continuous open-circuit produced a final talc concentrate which contained 0.90% Al2O3. 0.17% CaO, and 1.28% Fe2O3. These analyses represented impurity rejections of 77, 85, and 65%, respectively. Weight recovery for this open-circuit was 52%; however, weight recovery was estimated to be 75% with cleaner tailings recycle. Results from this investigation show that column flotation is a viable means for beneficiating talc.

Over the past six or seven years important new ideas have been developed concerning the origin of nickel sulfide deposits. To a large extent these have been stimulated by the major nickel discoveries of the Eastern Goldfields area of Western Australia (Woodall and Travis, 1969; Ewers and Hudson, 1972). Prior to these finds, the most important nickel camps were regarded as being associated exclusively with intrusive rocks such as the Nickel Irruptive at Sudbury or the intrusive peridotites at Thompson, rocks that were thought to have no close association with volcanism. Study of the Australian discoveries, coupled with work in South Africa (Viljoen and Viljoen, 1969) and Canada (Naldrett and Mason, 1968; Pyke, Naldrett and Eckstrand, 1973), has shown that volcanic rocks with true ultramafic compositions and extrusion temperatures of 1400 to 1600°C were a common feature during the Archean. Under certain circumstances economic concentrations of nickel sulfides have formed from these rocks, either settling to the base of their associated flows or accumulating in shallow intrusive feeders to the flows. The aim of this article is to show how these ultramafic rocks can be recognized, how the nickel deposits, if present, are likely to occur within them, and what special features characterize ore-bearing examples of the rocks.

The effect of particle size and composition on the pyrolysis and combustion of a pulverized bituminous coal in an entrained-flow reactor has been investigated. Predicted time-temperature histories of the coal particles and experimental weight loss data indicate a strong coupling of heat and mass transfer to the pyrolysis and combustion rates. A higher combustion rate following ignition was observed as particle size was increased to 112 µm (about 140 mesh). This is related to a higher particle temperature after ignition for the larger particles. Although the heating rate before ignition decreases with increasing particle size, higher slip velocities and surrounding gas temperatures for the larger particles promote early ignition. The presence of liptinite in the coal increases the weight loss rate before and immediately after ignition. Similar behavior was observed for pyrolysis. Fractions of an HVA bituminous coal that were rich in mineral matter or semi-fusinite were found to have a higher heterogeneous char combustion rate than vitrinite-rich samples.

State geological surveys promote sound procedures for evaluation of mineral resources before development-procedures that protect the environment and accrue maximum benefit to citizens. Sophisticated laboratories have been equipped for geophysical, geochemical, petrographic, and mineralogic characterization of materials to assist citizens in land-use planning and optimum development of natural resources, activities clearly within purview of the state. Proper use of these facilities in support of exploration in a competitive, free-enterprise system should be based on achieving ultimate benefits to the public, but, in general, should not entail competition with commercial laboratories.

This paper discusses some of the problems involved in predicting the productivity of a shovel and truck fleet in a new set of operating conditions. More specifically, it concentrates on the problems of predicting the travel times on the haul and return portions of the truck cycle under new profile conditions and the prediction of the interaction effect between the shovel and trucks at the loading point. The ability to calculate the travel times for a new road profile is not new. Additional corrections of these calculated times for expected actual operation can be made. In considering the interaction between the loader and the hauler, there are two approaches that can be taken. Probably the most accurate method of predicting the shovel-truck interaction is a simulation of the step-by-step operation considering the variation in cycle times of the shovel and trucks. This is usually called a stochastic simulation and requires input describing how these cycle times vary. However, by understanding the causes of this shovel-truck interaction it is possible to make sufficiently accurate predictions with much simpler methods. For the purpose of this discussion let us assume that the problem involves trying to predict the productivity of a single shovel-truck fleet at some future time in an existing operation. Let us also assume for simplification that the new operation to be simulated has the same loading and pit conditions and the same dumping conditions as did the existing operation. Therefore, the only difference would be the difference in the hauling profile for the new operation. The problem then becomes one of predicting the change in the travel times on the haul and return portions of the cycle, and in determining the change in interaction between the shovel and trucks with the new truck cycle times.

Relative quantitative analyses of certain mineralogical and textural properties of carbonate rocks were made with an image analysis computer. The instrument, referred to by its manufacturer as a Quantimet; consists of a petrographic microscope, a television camera and monitor, a detector, an electronic computer, and a read-out meter. Measurements were made on polished and etched specimens, standard thin sections, and on scanning electron micrographs of carbonate rocks. Critical to the success of the analysis is the preparation of the specimen in such a way that good optical contrast is obtained between the various petrographic components. The dolomite content, the pore volume, pore boundary projection, and pore size distribution of high-purity carbonate rocks were measured by image analysis methods. The frequency and size distribution of void inclusions in dolomites were determined by image analysis of scanning electron micrographs of cleaved surfaces. Image analysis methods permit rapid and quantitative assessment of various microscopic properties. The results are of reasonable accuracy and certainly are relative quantities that may be used to characterize carbonate rock materials.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has conducted investigations on extracting phosphate values from wastes generated during the mining and beneficiation of phosphate matrix. These wastes may contain up to one third of the phosphate originally present in untreated ore. Samples of wastes were air-dried and leached using 93 pct sulfuric acid in the presence of methanol. Evidence for the formation of a calcium sulfate hemihydrate coating that hinders complete dissolution of phosphate is presented. Solid-liquid separations were enhanced when flocculation was effected using poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) in conjunction with hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) or hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC. A conceptual flowsheet for a proposed process using an acid-alcohol leaching technique is presented.

Demands on available lands will continue to increase due to the projected increase in population and industrial expansion. Though there is an upper limit on the available lands, the multi-use nature of the lands will make it possible to meet these demands. However, this will not happen without adequate planning. Land uses can be broadly categorized as non-renewable and renewable. Lands with mineable resources can be dedicated at some point in time to the extraction of resources. Such a dedication, however long-term, is only temporary because of the non-renewable nature of the mineable resources. Implied here is that the land will be available before and after mining for other uses. Planning for such lands must have the objective that, as far as practicable, no non-renewable uses are pre-empted and no renewable uses are permanently destroyed. The primary aspects of this planning process will be addressed in this paper, These aspects include a discussion of planning responsibility, data needs and availability, the integration of mine planning and post-mining land use planning and a long-term plan for resource conservation and utilization. Minerals, together with agriculture and forestry products, are the primary sources of wealth. Therefore, to avoid land development that may pre-empt future mineral resource utilization, the local planning groups must be aware of the mineralization and mining potential. Much work needs to be done to identify and characterize the mineral resources. Even more work is needed in land use planning for lands with mineral deposits.

A novel two-stage froth flotation process to remove pyritic sulfur from fine- size coal is described. The process consists of a first-stage, standard coal flotation step in which high-ash refuse and some of the pyrite are removed as tailings. The first-stage clean coal froth concentrate is then repulped in fresh water, and a coal depressant, a pyrite collector, and a frother are added to float the remaining pyritic material. Laboratory and pilot plant flotation results with coals from the Lower Freeport and Pittsburgh beds are given. The pilot plant test results show that up to 80 percent pyritic sulfur reduction was achieved with the Lower Freeport bed coal and up to 50 percent with the Pittsburgh bed coal. Laboratory and pilot plant results were in excellent agreement, indicating that the process is a viable means of removing much of the sulfur from some coals.

The literature on four different topics is re¬viewed herein for purposes of mathematical mod¬eling of mine water inflow. The first of the topics reviewed is modeling of fissured or fractured ma¬terials; the second is general Darcy based flow models; the third is field methods for determining fracture flow properties; and the fourth is methods used presently for determining mine water inflows. The four topics are considered in the foregoing order. FRACTURE FLOW MODEL Two basic types of fracture flow models have been developed. The first type uses various tech¬niques for space averaging to obtain the equations. Systems are considered in which the porous media properties vary smoothly enough and the fracturing is sufficiently profuse and well distributed that the locally averaged properties are meaningful when viewed on the macroscopic scale. The final result is that a coefficient is used which is similar to saturated hydraulic conductivity and in many cases, simply is hydraulic conductivity. In other cases, the coefficient is apparent hydraulic conductivity be¬cause the response from flow in the fractures is more rapid than flow in the pore spaces. Faust and Mercer (1980) refers to this method as the contin¬uum approach. Some of the papers on this type of problem are by Duguid (1973), Verner et al. (1974), Owili-Eger (1975), Duguid and Abel (1974), duPrey and Weill (1974), and O'Neill (1978). Duguid and Lee (1977) also considered heat flow in the fluid and the porous medium. These papers all result in various types of computer programs. Some papers on this topic that do not result in computer programs are by Snow (1968, 1969) and Streltsova (1976). Some of the foregoing articles consider con¬solidation of the porous media and the resulting effect on hydraulic conductivity. Barenblatt et al. (1960) developed an analytical solution for fracture flow and discussed the time that is involved in the drainage process and the effect that fracture flow has on the drainage time. The second type of fracture flow model con¬siders the width of the fractures as a function of the pressure in the field. Faust and Mercer (1980) refers to this method as the discontinuum approach. This approach often requires two finite element programs that consider the stress in the material and the flow in the fractures separately. The pro¬grams are then linked to arrive at the final solution. Some of the articles that consider the interrela¬tionship between pressure and the size of the frac¬ture but do not use computer solutions are Gringarten et al. (1975), Narasimhan and Palen (1979), and Witherspoon et al. (1979). Papers that use a linked computer program between stress and flow are by Ayatollahi (1978), Gale et al. (1974), and Noorishad et al. (1971). Ayatollahi's program is primarily for the petroleum industry because it does not consider the effect of gravity. Ayatollahi assumes that pressure effects are very large in com¬parison to gravity effects. This assumption would apply only to very deep aquifers. Articles that consider fracture flow on a more applied basis are by Wittke et al. (1972), who con¬siders that the flow is entirely through fissures and negligible through the pores of the rock. Gringarten and Witherspoon (1972) developed type curves that may be used for analysis of fracture flow systems; the curves are based on the assumption that it is possible to distinguish between aquifers with hor¬izontal and vertical fractures and that it is possible to analyze the system as an equivalent anisotropic homogeneous porous medium with a single fracture with much higher permeability. Since 2016, electromagnetic interference (EMI) of personal dust monitors (PDMs) with magnetic proximity detection systems (PDSs) has been observed in underground coal mines. The EMI causes the magnetic field measurements of a PDS to change, which, in turn, alters the calculated location of the miner relative to the machine. Any altered location calculation can potentially cause the PDS to fail to warn a worker who is at an unsafe distance from the machine, arousing a serious concern on safety hazard caused by EMI in underground mines. The search for EMI mitigation strategies led to the development and use of large shielding pouches and boxes to hold the entire PDM to reduce its magnetic emission. Research on these pouches and boxes found that although they were able to reduce the emitted radiation from the PDM, they also disturbed the magnetic field of the PDS, affecting its performance. Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have focused on shielding internal PDM components rather than shielding the entire PDM. The PDM air pump motor is one of the PDM components that has been identified as a major source of electromagnetic radiation and has been selected for further study and tests. The measurements show that a small copper or aluminum foil enclosure can effectively reduce the magnetic emission of the motor by between 50 and 85% at 73 kHz. This study compares the test results of the air pump motor with various cost-effective shielding materials. The data provided in this paper can serve as a reference for shielding enclosure design of the PDM air pump motor to reduce its electromagnetic emission as one form of EMI mitigation strategy.

The Mississippian Salem Limestone, from which dimension stone is quarried in Indiana, is principally a calcarenitic rock formed of fossil bryozoans, echinoderms, and specimens of Endothyra. Numerical associations of the fossils, binding materials, oölitically coated fossils, and voids were determined by counting points on the surfaces of 278 thin sections of the limestone. Median sizes, coefficients of sorting, and skewness numbers were computed from measurements made of constituents in these thin sections. Many other samples and numerous exposures of the Salem and contiguous parts of adjacent formations also were studied. The organisms that furnished the skeletal material for formation of the Salem Limestone were chiefly gregarious and communal. Salem rocks are formed of nearly whole skeletons, of dismembered or slightly damaged skeletons, and of skeletons thoroughly ground up, because currents in the Salem sea varied in their ability to move and damage these materials. Locally the sediments are of uniform grain size because of sorting by currents and because related organisms grew to similar sizes. Rocks of the formation contain different proportions of the fauna both because the animals lived in these proportions and because their skeletons were mixed together by currents. The proportional relationships between members of the fauna were constant locally and for short periods of time. Study and mapping of the faunal associations, numbers of oölitically coated fossils, bedding structures, and size parameters enables geologists to suggest sedimentologic histories and sequences in areas of various sizes. Interpretations based upon such areal studies are necessary for evaluation of the dimension-stone potential within the Salem Limestone.

A combined physical/biochemical process for the precombustion removal of 13 inorganic hazardous air pollutant (HAP) precursors, i.e., Sb, As, Be, Cd, Cr, Cl, Co, F, Pb, Hg, Mn, Ni and Se, from coal was tested. Biochemical processes for removal of HAP precursors from coal potentially offer advantages of deeper cleaning, more specificity and less coal loss. The slurry column is a second-generation process for the beneficiation o f fine (60-mesh x µm coal by a combination of physical separation of mineral matter and biooxidation of pyrite. Sixty-seven percent removal of pyrite from a 60-mesh Pittsburgh #8 coal was achieved at a 35% (w/w) slurry concentration and a five-day reactor residence time. Ninety percent of the heating value of the feed coal was recovered. Among the HAP precursors of most concern, over half of the Se, As and Hg were removed from the feed coal. From 40% to 70% of most HAP precursors were removed from the feed coal. Hg in the feed coal was reduced from 0.12 to 0.054 ,µg/g in the product coal, while waste coal contained 0.24 µg/g.
