In June 1997, Mount Polley Mining Corp., a division of Imperial Metals Corp., completed an 18-kt/d (20,000 stpd) gold-copper mine in central British Columbia. Fast-track construction and extensive off-site construction were combined with an aggressive project schedule to build the mine in one year. This was three months ahead of schedule and 7% below the original budgeted cost of C$123.5 million (US$86 million). The Mount Polley Mine was the first of a crop of new open-pit mines in British Columbia. The Mount Polley deposit has been explored since the mid-1960s when it was known as the Cariboo Bell property. From 1988, Imperial Metals completed drilling and metallurgical testing on the deposit. This led to a positive feasibility study and the issuing of a Mine Development Certificate in 1991. The project was later shelved due to falling metals prices and the strength of the Canadian dollar. In late 1994, Imperial merged with Bethlehem Resources Corp., bringing a strong project team to the company. The deposit was then re-evaluated, ore reserves revised and additional metallurgical testing was performed. The result was a revised project plan. It indi¬cated that a financially feasible gold-copper mining op¬eration could be constructed at Mount Polley operat¬ing at 18 kt/d (20,000 stpd). In May 1996, an agreement was reached with Sumitomo to jointly fund and develop the project. By early 1996, final plans and permits were being prepared for construction, scheduled to begin in June 1.996. On-site work commenced on May 28th, 1996 following lifting of the road restrictions. Mount Polley Mining acted as its own project manager. Construction was completed in June 1997. Plant runup took place in July and full production began in August. Through the use of off-site construction and the careful selection of contractors who cooperated to complete some 12 major contracts, it was possible to reduce the mine and mill construction time from 16 to 13 months. Off-site construction for all possible aspects of the work and the use of used milling equipment allowed significant savings in overall capital costs of construction. Total costs for the mine, mill and tailings dam equated to C$6,100/t/d of throughput. The mill design incorporates several innovative features that will aid maintenance and allow flexibility of operation. The operation is designed as a closed system and meets the latest environmental standards. Concentrate is shipped by truck to the port of Vancouver. Revenues for the mine come from the mine's production of about 3.1 t/a (100,000 oz/year) of gold and 10.8 kt/a (24 million lbs/year) of copper during the first four years of the 12-year mine life.

Pulmonary responses to coal mine dust exposure were investigated by analysis of bronchoalveolar lavage specimens from non-smoking coal miners (n-12, mean age-43 ± 2 years, mean underground exposure-17 ± 2 years) and from non-smoking normal volunteers (n-18, mean age-43 ± 2 years). Spirometric and diffusion capacity indices were monitored as part of a physical exam. Lavage was performed in a subsegment of the right middle lobe by instillation of 200 ml of warmed saline solution in 50 ml aliquots and recovery by gentle suction. Specimens were centrifuged at 500g for 5 minutes at 2°C. Total and differential cell counts were recorded. Secretion of oxidants measured by chemiluminescence, surface morphology (spreading and ruffling), and lymphocyte parameters were determined. Lavage fluid was analyzed for the presence and quantity of acute phase reactants and immunoglobulins. Pulmonary function measurements as well as recovered lavage volume, total lavagable cells, and differential cell counts were similar in both miners and controls. Both resting and phorbol myristate acetate-stimulated chemiluminescence were also similar in miners and controls. In contrast, particle-stimulated chemiluminescence was significantly decreased in the alveolar macrophages from the miners (48% of control values). Morphometric analysis of scanning electron micrographs indicate that phagocyte surface spreading was similar in miners and controls. However, surface ruffling was 127% greater in the miners compared to controls. Lymphocyte subpopulations were similar in miners and controls. Protein analysis of the lavage fluid revealed lower total protein content in the lavage fluid of miners. However, the concentration of albumin, IgG, and IgA were similar in miners and controls. We conclude that most indices were normal in underground miners working under the current dust standard of 2 mg/m3. The decrease in particlestimulated chemiluminescence and the increase in surface ruffling in miners may suggest the beginnings of particle overload and activation of the macrophages. In addition, a decrease in total protein was noted in lavage fluid from miners.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with U.S. Borax and Chemical Corporation and the Kennecott Copper Corporation, has investigated the use of the microseismic method to evaluate the stability of large, open-pit slope walls. The method is based on the phenomenon that stressed rock normally emits subaudible rock noises, and the number of rock noises per unit time (noise rate) and the magnitude of the rock noises (amplitude) increase as the stresses in the rock approach the failure stress of the rock. Therefore, the detection and recording of those rock noises serve as a semiquantitative method of predicting the incipient failure of rock. This report briefly describes the three different types of microseismic apparatus, the procedures, and the results of microseismic investigations in the slope walls of the Boron Mine near Boron, California, and the Rimbley, Liberty, and Tripp-Veteran open-pit mines near Ely, Nevada. Microsesimic noise rates in stable inactive mining areas are between 0 and 10 noises/ hour; the rates in stable active mining areas are between 10 and 50 noises/hour; and the rate in unstable areas is as high as 2500 noises/ hour. High microseismic noise rates in the Liberty Pit correlate with the time of nearby earthquakes, indicating that the earthquakes affected the slope wall. The results provide evidence that the microseismic tech¬nique is applicable to large pit walls, and that the wide band, wide range microseismic equipment appears to be suitable for open-pit investigations.

It looked like a long chance as no one knew whether or where there might be important ore bodies. Even if they found them it might be a hopeless task to equip them under wartime conditions But the American copper companies had plenty of money and they were used to taking risks. They made a supersecret agreement with the Czar's deputies to send an exploring expedition to Russia at once I never learned the names of the other companies but Anaconda was to man- age the venture. Horace Winchell, then the leading mine geologist In the United States, was to be in charge of operations. Charles Janin, an eminent placer and dredge expert, was to study chances for producing gold and platinum. Though at 33 years of age I was much younger than the others, I was chosen to hunt for copper and other valuable metals. Charles Boynton, a business man who had lived in Russia and had married an attractive Russian woman, was to join the party and carry on any necessary financial or diplomatic affairs. The Sherwood Mine is being monitored to determine the nature and extent of changes in the mine and its environs which result from the closing and the cessation of pumping. Of particular interest was the possibility of piping-induced subsidence occurring as the mine flooded. Previous experience in the district indicated that this possibility was very real. A monitoring system, including acoustic sensors, extensometers, surface subsidence monuments, and ground water observation wells was installed in July 1978, just prior to the mine closing. Late in 1979, three piping-induced subsidence events occurred. The monitored data, and related laboratory studies are being applied to a quantitative description of piping-induced subsidence.

The role of governments as a factor in the international non-metallic minerals industry can take several forms. Classically, the government acts as a taxing agent, collecting part of the economic rent on behalf of the country from private-sector mine operators. In addition to its taxation policies, the state can and does provide the practical commercial framework of regulatory and fiscal incentives and restraints that shape the activities of the mining firms. In addition to its functions as an agent of the public interest, the government can choose to take a more direct stake in the mining industry, and has done so in the instance of several industrial minerals that are actively traded on world markets. In this paper, the actions of three governments are reviewed and the consequences of their actions are examined.

There is much in common between the requirements of open-pit mining and quarrying operations. Both involve the extraction of large volumes of material from surface excavations. The principal differences are of degree: open-pit mining of materials such as coal or gold generally involves the extraction of only small volumes of 'mineral' and large volumes of waste-they are operations with very high stripping ratios, and are made viable only because of the high unit value of the extracted mineral. In quarrying operations, the unit value of the mineral - sand, aggregate, limestone, or clay - is much lower, but stripping ration Are also lower. Thus the same techniques of geological modelling, reserve estimation, and pit planning are applicable, as is shown in two examples from the British quarrying industry. In each case, a primary requirement is the definition of production volume or tonnage. Sometimes, this need may be addressed simply by the use of a survey data processing package. However, in other cases, such as the two examples addressed in this paper, of sand and clay quarries, detailed assessment of the variation of mineral grades is a vital part of the exercise, and simple volumetric modelling cannot in itself be sufficient. In these cases, a block model approach using simple logical and numerical post-processing is also required to obtain required parameters for commercial classification of the products to be extracted. Pit designs themselves may be optimised by use of algorithms such as Lerchs-Grossmann, but the value of mineral produced can be dependent on factors other than its grade in any one part of a single pit, and the 'optimised' pit itself must be considered only a good sub-optimal. Given the right degree of healthy skepticism, and a software package with sufficient flexibility to be adapted readily to the rather different requirements of the quarrying industry, there is no reason why the quarrying industry should not benefit from the many years of investment in mining software technology.

The height of permanent slopes at the Panguna mine of Bougainville Copper Limited will vary from 350 to 950 metres. A few degrees difference in slope angle has a large effect on the ore/waste stripping ratio. Optimum slopes can be achieved if longer batter slopes (exceeding 45m height) are excavated using bulldozers to trim parallel to controlling fracture surfaces. Unnecessary slope flattening by incorporating benches can cost millions of dollars in lost ore. Faults and other major weaknesses, which can result in wedge failure or erodible zones have been treated successfully with shotcrete, rockbolts and cable dowels. To minimize support effort and interference with mine production, early identification and treatment of unstable areas is important.

Potassium, together with nitrogen and phosphorous, is one of the essential nutrients required for growth. All living things need potash and so the major demand for potash (approximately 95% of, total demand) is as a fertilizer. Traditional agricultural techniques relied on the return of organic materials to the soil to provide nutrient requirements and maintain soil fertility, and the prevailing low crop yields required little in the way of added fertilizers. But agricultural productivity has increased dramatically in recent times, and this increase in crop yields requires substantial amounts of added nutrients to keep the soil fertile. It follows that there will always be a demand for potash. There is no substitute. Other fertilizers that contain N and P are complementary and not competing products.

The ventilation of a mine is one of the key elements to a successful mining operation. It is, or should be, one of the primary concerns of the mining engineer at an underground mine. Too frequently, however, insufficient thought is given to future requirements. As a result, the mines suddenly find themselves with ventilation problems that cannot be corrected economically, or in short order, and have to suffer the consequences of being on the verge of having units shut down from time to time until the venlilaltion system can be improved. Insufficient ventilation in capital-intensive mining can cause production losses, the values of which far outweigh the significant costs of providing and operating an adequate ventilation plan. Many theories, and techniques in planning and control of underground ventilation systems have been developed over the years . It is the intent of this paper to point out some of the fundamental concepts, from the practical point of view, in the design and operation of a ventilation system, with special reference to underground mines using a room-and-pillar method.

The Moab Uranium Mill Tailings Remedial Action (UMTRA) Project Site (Site) is a former uranium-ore processing facility near Moab, Utah, where production ended in 1984. The United States Department of Energy Office of Environmental Management (DOE-EM) is responsible for remediating the site to meet 40 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 192 standards promulgated by the United States Environmental Protection Agency under the authority of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). Tailings from the former mill were stored in an unlined impoundment (tailings pile), totaling 16 million tons of waste material. Surface cleanup has been ongoing since 2009 and consists of removal and transport of tailings via rail to an off-site disposal facility in Crescent Junction, Utah, with an estimated completion date around 2029. Gravity-driven migration of tailings fluids and recharge through the tailings pile and former on-site ore storage areas in the northeastern part of the site led to contamination of site soil and groundwater. The primary contaminant of concern is ammonia, which was present in fluids used in the milling process (DOE 2003). Uranium is a contaminant of potential concern. An interim groundwater remedy is currently in place that utilizes a system of extraction and injection wells to limit discharge of contaminated groundwater into the nearby Colorado River. Exceedance of surface water standards for ammonia are a principal concern due to potential endangered species fish habitat areas along the Colorado River adjacent to the Site. When necessary, surface water diversion is used to lower surface water ammonia concentrations when suitable habitats develop for endangered young-of-year fish. Once surface cleanup concludes and the tailings pile is removed, a formal groundwater remedy must be selected and documented in a Groundwater Compliance Action Plan (GCAP). Under Title 1 of the Uranium Mill Tailings Radiation Control Act, natural flushing (i.e., monitored natural attenuation), may be selected as the groundwater remedy if it can be demonstrated that the remedy will achieve groundwater standards within 100 years. The 40 CFR 192 groundwater standard for uranium is 44 micrograms per liter (μg/L), and the target groundwater concentration of ammonia based on adverse effects on local fish species is 3 milligrams per liter (mg/L). A collaboration with Geosyntec Consultants, Inc. (Geosyntec), the Moab UMTRA Project team, the DOE Office of Legacy Management, the DOE-EM, and the Network of National Laboratories for Environmental Management and Stewardship was held in 2022 with the goal to generate actionable recommendations to develop a GCAP for the Site. The primary recommendation was development of a groundwater fate and transport model to predict the remedial timeframe under various groundwater remedies. This paper presents the results of soil and groundwater sampling, geochemical modelling, and laboratory column and batch reactor testing that will be used to parameterize a numerical model for estimating the remedial timeframe under various scenarios, including natural flushing.

"A numerical conditioning analysis for mineral recovery estimation was performed for industrial flotation plants, considering the copper (Cu), molybdenum (Mo) and iron (Fe) separability. A modified relative condition number, ?, was presented that allowed sensitivity analysis to be evaluated for the component recovery by means of an analytical formula. This closed form made it possible for the error propagation to be determined from feed, concentrate and tail grades with different orders of magnitude. The ? parameter can be evaluated using available grade data from the design criteria or historical mass balances, in which the variability is typically unknown. Reconciled data from different Cu/Mo concentrators were employed to evaluate the effect of small numerical disturbances in the grade data on the mineral recovery estimation. Higher error propagation was typically observed for Fe. The Mo minerals presented numerical problems, mainly in second cleaners and in the first cell of rougher banks. Lower condition numbers were observed for Cu due to the higher flotation rates.Mass-balance data reconciliation without redundancy was evaluated for a typical Cu/Mo flotation circuit using relative error minimization. Significant relative errors in the mineral recovery estimation were obtained with nonreconciled data in ill-conditioned problems. Negligible improvements in the mineral recovery estimation because of the data reconciliation with regard to the nonreconciled approach were obtained in well-conditioned problems. In addition, the improvements in mineral recovery estimation by using Cu, Mo and Fe in the data reconciliation were nonsignificant with respect to using only the best-conditioned component in well- and ill-conditioned problems.Despite the effort in data reconciliation and data repetition, poor performance may be obtained in ill-conditioned problems, which can deteriorate the flotation rate characterization. The error propagation has a negative impact on the mineral recovery of the first cell, which may significantly bias the flotation rate characterization of both valuable and nonvaluable elements.IntroductionMass balances have been extensively used in flotation processes to determine the mass flowrates (production) and mineral recovery (efficiency) of valuable minerals. Simple relationships for steadystate processes based on the feed, concentrate and tail grades can be obtained by taking a black-box approach. However, the calculation of concentrate flowrates from different components of the system, such as size fractions, chemical elements or minerals, does not satisfy the mass-conservation principle because of measurement errors (Smith and Ichiyen, 1973; Romagnoli and Sánchez, 2000). Mass-balance data reconciliation allows for obtaining a unique solution that satisfies the total and component mass balances, making small adjustments to the process data and taking advantage of the information redundancy (Narasimhan and Jordache, 2000). This methodology, which is based on a constrained weighted least-squares minimization, has proved to be robust when measurement errors are normally distributed, in the absence of gross errors.Commercial software has been developed to conduct massbalance data reconciliation in flotation processes, including MATBAL (Algosys, 2002), BILMAT (Algosys, 2013), JKMultibal (JKTech, 2013), BILCO (Caspeo, 2013) and HSC Chemistry (Outotec, 2013), which accomplish the reconciliation using known data accuracy in the optimization problem. The data accuracy can be obtained by sampling a stream n times in a run, known as repeats, each with independent chemical assays. Some unmeasured variables can be estimated using the measuring redundancy and sensor location. At present, grade and flow rate sensors may be incorporated in flotation to conduct real-time mass balances. Geostatistical estimation techniques were customized to enable forecast of production figures at the Silver Bell uranium mine (Uravan District). Surface drill hole data were used to provide a block model of kriged estimators of average uranium grades. The recoverable figures, such as ore-waste ratio and ore grade, are then deduced from regressive curves previously obtained from underground information and production data. Cross-validations of the entire model were performed and were found positive.

Originally, the term solution mining applied to a dissolution, washing, or "brining" of soluble salts such as halite (common table salt), potash or trona. After the mid-sixties, however, the definition has been expanded to include heap and dump leaching, in-place (in situ) leaching, removal of oil from tar sands, extraction of sulfur from deep wells by the Frasch process and the recovery of metalliferous solutions from geothermal sources. Solution mining is also known as borehole, non-shaft, or chemical mining; the extraction of soluble mineral values from a variety of ores using appropriate solvents and chemicals. Solution mining frequently involves chemical changes; for example, copper usually goes into solution as copper sulfate, gold and silver as a cyanide compound, and uranium as a sulfate or uranyl tricarbonate. The valuable constituent is removed from the solid body of the ore by mass transfer to a aqueous solution.

Tunnel boring machines (TBM) utilize disc cutters as the primary means for excavating hard rock. Depending on rock excavatability and rock abrasivity disc cutters can exhibit significant wear. A detailed analysis has been carried out to characterize failure modes and wear patterns of disc cutters. The relationship between rock properties, op-eration of the TBM, and failure modes of cutting tools is clearly high-lighted. On that basis a prediction tool for disc cutter consumption has been developed that allows to estimate not only gross cutter life, but accounts for cutterhead design, premature cutter changes, and disc cutter repair costs.

Abrasives are substances both natural and synthetic that are used to grind, polish, abrade, scour, clean, or otherwise remove solid material usually by rubbing action (as in a grinding wheel), but also by impact (pressure blasting). Facts about the discovery, early use, adaptation, and development of abrasives prior to the 20th century are few. From the sparse, earliest information that is available, it would appear that the science of abrasives began when, to fashion his tools, man began to select certain kinds of rocks in preference to others because of their peculiar properties. There is evidence that stones were sawed by some sort of grinding machine as early as 4000 BC in Egypt. The real expansion of abrasives use coincided with the beginning of metallurgy in the Middle East around 2000 BC. The earliest confirmed use of abrasives for grinding metal comes from a steel dagger found along with a sharpening stone which was dated at about 1500 BC. Natural and manufactured abrasive substances play an important role in fashioning and finishing numerous products with a wide variety of end-use applications. The mining and preparation of crude, natural abrasives for their markets and the manufacture of synthetic and other abrasive materials contribute significantly to the US economy (Table 1). In addition, just as sawing to specific dimensions enhanced the value of the Egyptian stone, the use of abrasives in fabrication of modem products, and the addition of abrasives to others, add value. GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS The most important physical properties of materials that qualify as abrasives are hardness, toughness (or rigidity), grain shape and size, character of fracture (or cleavage), and purity (or uniformity). To fabricate bonded abrasive products such as grinding wheels, additional considerations include stability under high heat and bonding characteristics of grain surfaces. The economic factors of cost and availability are always important. No one singular property is paramount for any use. For some applications extreme hardness and toughness are needed, as in diamonds for drill bits. For other uses, factors of greatest importance are hardness and ability to break down slowly and, in the process, develop fresh cutting edges when grains become worn. In garnet sandpaper, for example, highly cleavable, friable, or extremely tough grains are not desirable. For other uses, extreme hardness may be objectionable. Abrasives for dentifrices and for glass-cleaning soaps are cases in point. For the most efficient uses in more critical applications, different types of abrasives are rarely completely interchangeable. While crushed quartz and garnet are both used in sandpaper, the two abrasives are not at all interchangeable in their applications. In the final analysis, the choice of a high-grade abrasive depends upon the quality and quantity of work performed by the abrasive per unit of cost. Initial cost of an artificial abrasive may be much greater than that of a natural abrasive, but the artificial mineral may do so much better work and do it so much faster that the ultimate cost is less. It is for this reason that artificial abrasives have largely replaced natural abrasives.

Prediction of acid rock drainage (ARD) for low-sulphide, low-neutralisation potential (LSLNP) mine wastes is methodologically different from that for normal sulphidic mining wastes. In this paper. LSLNP wastes are conveniently defined as those with S2 < 1% and ABA-NP2 < 20 kg CaCO3 eq/t. The distinctiveness of ARD prediction for LSLNP materials originates from their frequently low oxidation rates and is mainly attributable to two reasons. First, the utilisation efficiency of available carbonate neutralisation potential (CNP2) rapidly deteriorates when the sulphide oxidation rate per unit mass of waste drops below a certain level. Reducing the flushing rate of a waste has the same effect as increasing the oxidation rate. Second, silicate neutralisation becomes increasingly important as oxidation rates diminish, and can no longer be ignored in LSLNP materials as it often is for normal sulphidic mine wastes. In this paper, the effects of oxidation rate, pore gas CO2 partial pressure, and flushing rate on ARD prediction for LSLNP materials are theoretically demonstrated with the help of modelling using the computer program MINTEQA2. A new methodology for ARD prediction for LSLNP materials is presented in terms of a prediction procedure. Finally, a case study is given to validate some of theoretical aspects discussed and to illustrate the use of the newly proposed ARD prediction procedure.

The pressure filtration behavior of dispersed and flocculated alumina slurries at high percent loadings is discussed with an objective to determine the effect of surfactant type and concentration on slurry properties. A high purity alumina powder was used as a model solid. Dispersion of the alumina was controlled by surfactants that are considered to act by electric and steric stabilizers. The effect of both the ionic and nonionic surfactants was investigated. Surface charge measurements of the slurries were carried out by electrokinetic sonic amplitude (ESA) method to understand the mechanisms. The effect of surfactant type and concentration on the kinetics of pressure filtration and final cake properties are discussed.

The San Manuel oxide ore reserve ranges in depth from being exposed on the surface to lying 1000 ft. beneath a conglomerate layer all of which is confined in the subsidence zone of an active sulfide block caving operation. Present day recovery of the oxide copper values is either by open pit mining-dump leaching, or in-situ leaching of the oxide ore using dilute sulfuric acid solutions and solvent extraction/electrowinning processing of the pregnant leach solutions. Future plans are for continuation of leaching with expansion of reserves and increased processing rates. The state of the mining industry and copper in particular has not been good for a number of years. All of the producers that are still operating have made major adjustments in order to remain competitive. Magma Copper Co. is no exception.
