The western industrial world has to rely more and more on complex polymetallic sulphide ores as sources for base metals. These ores are composed of fine grained sulphide minerals such as chalcopyrite, galena, sphalerite, pyrite, pyrrhotite and marcasite. The liberation sizes of the individual minerals can range between 30 um and 5 um. Therefore, applying conventional techniques to recover these finely disseminated minerals usually results in unsatisfactory metallurgical performances with high losses of the valuable mineral to the slime , fraction of the tailing. New concepts for treating these polymetallic complex ores are discussed in this paper. Beneficiation techniques utilizing new reagents and a new approach to pulp preparation are described. Some of these techniques were applied to ores from existing concentrators as well as to new ores. The results of these studies are discussed in the following sections.

Prologue Antoine Marc Gaudin (Fig. 1) was truly a giant in the field of mineral processing, and his shadow is still cast long on our profession. "Tony," as his students affectionately called him (but never to his face), came to the United States in 1917 and enrolled at Columbia University where he studied under Professor Arthur F. Taggart. Later, as a lecturer, he wrote his classic comminution paper (Gaudin, 1926). This important work led to his appointment as an associate professor at The University of Utah, where he conducted highly original work on flotation fundamentals that is still widely quoted today (Gaudin et al., 1928-30). In 1929, he was appointed Research Professor of Ore Dressing at the Montana School of Mines in Butte. Shortly thereafter, he published his first book, Flotation (Gaudin, 1932). Because Gaudin could so quickly cut through the fog to get to the essence of a problem, this is still a valuable reference book. It is a valued part of my personal library, and I consult it frequently. Over the next decade, he conducted an outstanding graduate research program at Butte, but, more importantly, he honed his undergraduate lectures and produced the century's outstanding text in the field, Elements of Mineral Dressing (Gaudin, 1939). Adsorption experiments were conducted at two different solids loadings, to investigate the mechanism of oleate adsorption on apatite. Adsorption density at pH 10 was found to be dependent on solids loading in an oleate concentration region where surface precipitation could occur. Analysis of adsorption isotherms indicated three distinct regions of adsorption. In the region I (below the region of calcium oleate precipitation), molecular adsorption was observed. Simultaneous molecular adsorption and surface precipitation occurred in region II, while surface precipitation was predominant in region III along with some bulk precipitation. Correlation between flotation of apatite with sodium oleate and the mode of oleate interaction with the surface is established.

The adsorption of dialkyl di-and mono-thio-phosphinates on gold, silver and gold-silver alloys has been studied in the present work. These reagents, which are selective collectors for sulfide flotation, have been found to improve precious metals recovery from ores. Voltammetric studies have indicated that dithiophosphinate adsorbs on gold at much higher potentials than on silver, while monothiophosphinate adsorbs only on silver. However, both adsorb on gold-silver alloys with the adsorption potential decreasing with increasing silver content. Using FTIR spectroscopic measurements, the surface species formed during the interactions of these collectors have been identified. The results of the electrochemical and spectroscopic measurements have been compared with the contact angle data obtained at controlled potential conditions.

The coal industry is ever changing and complex. This article discusses some problems that must be faced and their projected economic effects. Coal's dominant market is for electric power generation. While growth rates in the 1980s will be nominal compared to historic growth rates, such growth will be substantial in absolute terms because it comes from a very large base. Higher growth is expected in the 1990s. History When looking toward the future, an examination of the past is helpful. Figures 1 and 2 present production and consumption statistics (expressed in short tons) on bituminous coal and lignite in the US from 1945 onward. After an all-time peak of 572 Mt (631 million st) in 1947, total production dropped to 356 Mt (392 million st) in 1954. Sustained growth in total production did not begin until the 1960s. Coal production from under-ground mines declined from more than 400 Mt (440 million st) in 1947 to about 295 Mt (325 million st) during 1965 to 1970. A further decline ensued until a strike in 1978 reduced production to only 218 Mt (240 million st). Underground mines produced 283 Mt (312 million st) in 1983. Coal production from surface mines has increased steadily since the early 1960s. While some of this increase has come from mines east of the Mississippi River, most has resulted from surface mines developed in the West. Production from surface mines west of the Mississippi River was 224 Mt (247 million st) in 1982. Total coal production from under-ground and surface mines, other than Western surface mines, continues to approximate levels of 40 years ago. In spite of several wage increases, increasing productivity in surface and underground mines enabled the coal industry to hold the average value f.o.b. mine to about $5.50/t ($5 per st) from the end of World War II to 1969. Under-ground mine productivity peaked at more than 13.5 t (15 st) per man-day in 1969. Borates are defined as ' 'salts or esters of boric acid; a compound containing the radical B203" (Bates and Jackson, 1987). Borates are defined by industry as any compound that contains or supplies boric oxide. A large number of minerals contain boric oxide, but the three that are the most important from a worldwide commercial standpoint are: borax, ulexite, and colemanite. These are produced in a limited number of countries (Fig. 1), dominated by the United States and Turkey, which together furnish about 90% of the world's borate supplies (Lyday, 1991). Production in the United States originates in the Mojave Desert of California; borax and kernite are mined by US Borax from its large deposit at Boron. Borate containing brines are pumped from Searles Lake by North American Chemical Co., and a limited amount of colemanite is mined by Newport Mineral Ventures from Death Valley. Turkish production is controlled by Etibank, the national mining enterprise, which supplies most of the commercially traded ulexite and colemanite from mines in the Bigadic and Emet Districts, plus borax from the huge deposit at Kirka. Borate minerals have been employed in a wide range of uses for many centuries, dating from at least the 8th century when they were used primarily as a flux for assaying and refining gold and silver. Their valuable properties and relative rarity soon stimulated international trade in borates; Marco Polo claimed to have trans- ported Chinese borate minerals from Tibet to Europe, and his home port of Venice was the center for borate imports and use throughout the Middle Ages (Travis and Cocks, 1984). Borates were traded at relatively high prices for highly specialized applications into the late years of the 19th century. At that time they were being used for medicines, food preservatives, ceramic glazes, and in expanded applications as metal fluxes. It was in that era that borax was discovered in Clear Lake, CA, and more significantly, the playa deposits of western Nevada were found and exploited by F.M. "Borax" Smith and others. Research and development by Smith's company began the evolution of borates from a high priced commodity with a few specialized uses to the relatively low priced chemical raw material used in large tonnages on a worldwide scale today. Borates are often defined and sold by their boric oxide or B,03 content, and most statistical data are listed in tons of B203. Of the products sold by the industry, borax pentahydrate or 5 mol and boric acid are the most commonly traded commodities. Boric acid plants are operated by all of the major borate producers. Glass fiber insulation is the major end use in the United States followed by textile glass fiber and borosilicate glass, detergents, and ceramics. Detergent usage continues to be a major end use in Europe.

Introduction The reclamation of mine/mill tailings areas is undertaken for a variety of objectives including safety, appearance, economical use of lands and forests and long term storage of a future resource. The establishing of criteria for these objectives at any site is a shared task of the government and mining company. Our attention in this paper is directed to uranium mine/ mill tailings as they are handled in the Canadian industry and in the unique Canadian climate. We focus our attention on the state of the art. Uranium is a ubiquitous mineral forming an average of 4 g per tonne of the Earth's crust. Ores are mined at about 500 g per tonne so that the residual content of uranium in tailings is comparable to average background levels. However, as in most mine/mill operations, the ore contains other minerals that become readily mobile after milling operations. Thus the main objective of tailings impoundment is the stability both physically and chemically of the mobile materials. Since the requirements for the operation and construction of tailings areas in Canada have changed considerably over the past decade, there exists a great many mine/mill tailings areas which while considered adequate in their day, would not meet modern criteria. However, most of these installations pose no concern or hazard to the public. The proximity of mine/mill development to inhabited land areas has necessitated more stringent modes of tailings operations and provisions for tailings site reclamation. The more important of these have been: 1) the prevention of dyke failure, with large liquid-solid outflows onto adjoining lands, and 2) the prevention of seepage from the tails of pollutants such as chlorides, sulphides, heavy metals and radionuclides. Uranium mill tailings are discharged as a slurry from the concentrator after the removal of generally only about 1000 g, or less, per tonne of uranium from the as-mined ore. As a consequence, a great volume of low level activity waste is generated. The risk assessment project examines the likelihood of inorganic contaminants from copper dump-leaching operations to contaminate domestic water supplies. The project examines contaminant transport by modeling contaminant movement from the base of a leach pile through the unsaturated zone and into the saturated zone. The modeling effort is unique in that it models infiltration, contaminant transport in the unsaturated and saturated zone combined with geochemical modeling of the unsaturated zone. The project incorporates probability theory to reflect the uncertainty of hydrogeologic parameters.

In the mid-I 970s the rallying cry sent out by the aggregate trade associations to aggregate operators was to come to Washington and help design national legislation mandating reclamation of pits and quarries. This collective effort paid off in that aggregate operators were able to assist in the design of "livable" legislation; however, the coal mining industry took some very hard hits. A principal argument used by the aggregate industry was that relatively small parcels of land are impacted, the operations are located in or near urban areas to serve in the development of that immediate area, and are of many years duration; whereas, coal strip mines disturb many acres, are of short duration, and whose products may have world or nationwide utilization. Historically, developments in reclamation are tied closely to the regulatory systems that have been created to control environmental effects of mining. Since reclamation generally results in a cost incurred after the stone, sand and gravel has been mined and does not add to the inherent value of the mineral, there was little incentive in the past for mine operators to reclaim the land. In 1977, the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA) became the law for coal mine operators. The law states that, among other provisions, reclamation must "restore the land affected to a condition capable of supporting the uses which it was capable of supporting prior to any mining, or higher or better uses". It is of interest to note that years before the initiation of legislation leading to SMCRA twenty-eight states already had reclamation regulations that covered virtually all minerals. The scope of performance standards found in the state reclamation regulations included slope stabilization, grading, revegetation, neutralization of toxic materials, visual screening, waste disposal, control of drainage, and other sources of pollution and erosion. Environmental legislation and the consequent regulations came about because the public perceived that private industry did not properly value environmental quality and as a result the government became the policeman.

Fluorite, a kind of critical non-metallic minerals, is the primary source of industrial fluorine. Sodium oleate (SO) is commonly used as the collector of fluorite ores. However, because of its some features (such as the low solubility, high solidifying point, and poor dispersion of SO) at low temperatures, it profoundly inhibits its collecting ability as well as the flotation performance. Herein, we have developed a low-temperature-resistant collector for the efficient flotation separation of fluorite from quartz. The advantages and disadvantages of the SO and sodium petroleum sulfonate (SPS) were analyzed by comparing the performance under different temperature conditions. The results of flotation tests suggest that SPS exhibited much better collecting performance than SO under low temperature. The flotation mechanism of the two collecting agents were further analyzed by contact angle measurements, zeta potential measurements, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and flotation kinetics. The results indicated that both collectors can selectively undergo electrostatic and chemical adsorption with fluorite, with no adsorption on quartz surface. The sulfonic acid group in SPS is a hydrophilic functional group, which has a relatively higher solubility in water. Therefore, the water solubility of SPS is better at low temperatures.

The iron mine and beneficiation facilities of Marcona Mining Company are located on the coast of south central Peru. The facilities include an open pit mine, crushing, concentrator containing grinding, magnetic-separation and flotation facilities, pelletizing plants and a completely self sufficient infrastructure. Total production capability is about 10,000,000 DLTPY, of which almost 6,000,000 DLT result from the fine-grind magnetic concentrate. Over 1,500,000 DLT of fine-grind concentrate is obtained from processing high-pyrrhotite ore. Although the orebody contains quantities of oxidized primary ore and transitional ores (mixed magnetite and hematite), the principal ore is predominantly a coarsely crystalline to fine grained massive magnetite.(l-3) In the primary ore the major impurities found are silicates and the iron sulfides- pyrite and pyrrhotite. Sulfur levels typically average about three percent although levels of five percent are not unusual and some ores contain up to ten percent total sulfides. In general the silicates and pyrite are readily rejected from finely ground primary ore by magnetic separation and very basic froth flotation processes. The high iron, low sulfur concentrate produced is particularly suitable for production of high quality oxide pellets. However, pyrrhotite is not removed from the magnetite matrix by either of' these simple beneficiation methods.

In the Western Coal Region, successful reclamation of surface-mined areas includes the protection of groundwater sources. To accomplish this, a complete understanding of the geohydrology of the affected area is imperative. Successful mine design also calls for careful attention to geohydrology. Because the Western Coal Region is semi-arid land used mainly for farming and grazing, groundwater is a particularly sensitive topic. It is especially sensitive where the lignite scheduled for mining is itself the aquifer supplying the farms and ranches. Such is the case throughout much of the Western Coal Region, particularly where there are no near-surface sand and gravel aquifers that are commonly found in the glaciated portions of the Region. Just as mining can adversely affect groundwater supply, so can groundwater adversely affect mining. Mine flooding and highwall instability are examples of this. But, mine operators must realize that procedures they use to remedy geohydrologically-related mining problems can have a dramatic effect upon ground- water conditions in areas adjacent to the mine. A logical precaution is to require the acquisition of complete baseline data prior to making the first cut. We recommend that the mining plan not only incorporate the reclamation plan, but that they be developed as one plan.

Coal quality control in mining and mine planning has always been important and has become even more essential in recent years due to environmental considerations. The primary consumers of the sub-bituminous coals found in the Powder River Basin of Wyoming are electric utilities that require low sulfur coals to meet government air quality regulations. Electric generating plants are designed to burn coal of a specific quality, and the supplier of that coal must be able to guarantee shipments within specified quality tolerances. Over the past several years, Exxon Coal USA and, more recently, The Carter Mining Company, a division of Exxon Coal USA have established an evaluation and development program to accurately define the geology and quality of their coal properties. This requires an adequate drill hole density so that detailed correlations of the coal seam and the lithologic sub-units, of the coal seam can be made. These units must be recognizable in the core and also on geophysical logs.

Effective control of balling line circuits is a problem taconite companies have been dealing with for over thirty years. The sensitivity of balling circuits to changes in moisture, bentonite, concentrate particle size, and other operating parameters are the main reasons for control problems. This paper presents test results and describes the integration of existing instrumentation with a digital image analysis system on a balling circuit. This work has the goal of developing control strategies to automatically adjust water spray and bentonite addition, to optimize the size distribution on the roll screen and reduce the variability in control between balling attendants, resulting in more consistent greenball product quality.

The acid leach-solvent extraction processing of oxide copper ores can be improved when selected cation additives are utilized. Bench scale testing showed improvements in both sulfuric acid leaching and solvent extraction processing. Treatment with the method to be described shows improvement in copper recovery in the acid leaching section as well as reduced acid consumption and reduced iron and aluminum dissolution. Processing the copper bearing leach solution with LIX-64N shows increased loading of the LIX reagent which relates to reduced aqueous and organic flow rates, reduced organic loss and inventory as well as a reduction in the size of mixer-settlers. The use of selected monovalent cations controls fluctuations within the pro- cessing system to accomplish the above named improvements. Additionally, these cations are totally compatible throughout the processing system and are quite inexpensive. Bench scale recycle data will be presented both for the leaching section and the continuous solvent extraction processing section up to (but not including) processing the loaded electrolyte. Material balances as well as major solution component monitoring will also be presented.

The loading characteristics of gold-bromide species onto activated carbon were evaluated using a batch system. The overall loading of gold onto activated carbon was rapid for the first few hours, but it continued without cessation as a result of the reduction of gold. Therefore, conventional equilibrium considerations were not applicable. Although loading continued slowly after several days, an abnormally high, loading capacity value of 10-12 meq/g carbon (650-800 kg Au/t) could be attained in 72 hours. The loading of gold-bromo species by activated carbon was by the mass transfer of (AuBr4)- species to the external surface to be reduced to metallic gold by carbon. Elution of gold from loaded carbon was feasible provided the carbon had not been loaded to high capacity values. If loading is carried to high levels, complete elution becomes impractical, and the gold may be recovered by ashing the carbon. For the high loading capacities observed, this option would appear to be cost effective. The effect of several variables on the loading capacity of the activated carbon for gold-bromo species is discussed.

The development of larger size flotation machines, which started in the 1950's and 19601s, is still proceeding. The largest mechanical flotation machines available today have unit volumes in the range of 38 to 42 m3 (1,350 to 1,500 cft). In fact, the motivating forces of increasing capital and energy costs and decreasing ore grades, which created the need for large flotation cells, not only still exist, but are becoming more critical. This paper reports the development of an improved mechanism for these large flotation machines. The starting point in the development of a new mechanism was the identification of design and performance features of existing machines where improvements were desirable. The result of this work was a mechanism which is an improvement over existing designs. This new design is characterized by an efficient overhung stator and a vortex profile rotor. The overhung design of the stator removes unnecessary and undesirable baffling in the lowest parts of the tank, while maintaining a quiescent froth layer. This results in lower power consumption and better pulp circulation and solids suspension. The vortex profile rotor acts as an efficient pump, with higher pulp recirculation rates as evidenced by the increased air dispersion capabilities, good solids suspension, and low power consumption.

INTRODUCTION The estimation of ore reserves is a process that begins with the earliest exploration stages on a property and continues throughout any subsequent evaluation and exploitation of the deposit. During exploration and preliminary evaluation, the results of these reserve estimates constitute the basic data for prefeasibility studies and economic analysis. The decision to continue exploration and development or to abandon a prospect is often based upon these studies. During the active life of a mine, reserve computations are continuously revised to assist in development planning, cost and efficiency analyses, quality control, and improvement of extraction and processing methods. Accurate reserve estimates are also required when financing a project, purchasing or selling a property, and for accounting purposes such as depletion and tax calculation. It is important to remember that the reliability of ore reserve estimates varies progressively through time as more and more information becomes available. The lowest order of reliability of estimation of reserves exists at the time of discovery. The maximum level of certainty concerning the ore reserves within a deposit is reached when the deposit is completely mined out. Between these two extremes are variable levels of certainty as to the tonnage and grade of the resource. This is particularly true of that portion of the mineral resource that constitutes the "minable reserve," as this portion is dependent upon economic as well as geological and technological factors. In the following discussion, several of the factors affecting ore reserve computation and some of the commonly used methods of calculation are presented. The first part of the discussion is confined to classical methods of hand calculation utilizing level maps and sections. The second part of the discussion presents an overview of somewhat more sophisticated methods of geostatistics which have been developed within recent Years. Geostatistical methods frequently provide the best ore re- serve estimates for many deposits. However, a digital computer is required for such geostatistically derived estimates due to the number and complexity of the cornputations involved. For many properties the classical nongeostatistical methods are adequate, particularly in the early exploration stages. In fact, it is the author's contention that even at those properties where the geostatistical approach is employed for reserve estimation, the geological and engineering staffs should prepare an estimate by traditional means. This provides an internal audit for the reserves and at the same time requires a continuing close appraisal of geologic problems that influence the presently known geostatistically estimated reserves and production at the mine.

Raise boring of mine ventilation shafts in many cases offers a lower cost and higher speed method of construction in comparison to conventional shaft sinking. Where underground access is available for raise boring the potential savings indicate that raise boring should be considered as an alternative to other methods. Raise boring machines are currently in use which have the capability for reaming shafts up to twenty feet in diameter, depending on the strata and depth. These large capacity machines make it possible to consider raise bored shafts for moving large volumes of air. Although we will consider here only ventilation shafts, raise boring should also be considered for men and material shafts. When the mine planner has determined the volume of air required through a shaft at a particular location he is faced with the problem of selecting the shaft size. The principal factors in optimizing the shaft size are the construction costs for the shaft 'and the power cost to move the air through the shaft. The larger diameter the' shaft is the more it costs to construct, but for a given volume of air the power required (cost) becomes lower as the diameter increases. The construction cost is paid only once, when the shaft is constructed. The power costs, however, are paid throughout the life of the shaft. Methods of optimizing air shaft size found in the literature (References 1 and 2) amortize the construction cost and include it in the average annual cost of operating the airshaft. These methods derive a formula for the average annual cost vs. shaft size and de-rive the formula to compute the optimum size for a given air flow rate.
