In this part of the two-part paper we discuss briefly the adaptation of the comminution model to describe the observed behavior of an industrial grinding circuit. Although reported verification of comminution models for continuous systems is limited, some interesting work has been reported 1,2 recently. The data acquisition and modeling efforts are described first, followed by discussion of some of the simulation results. Observations pertinent to steady-state operation are presented followed by a description of the application of a dynamic model of the grinding circuit for synthesis and evaluation of grinding-circuit control. The pilot-scale work indicated the comminution model should be capable of describing an industrial size-reduction process. Recognizing the broad utility of a process model based on first- principles, the Industrial Nucleonics Corporation of Columbus, Ohio, embarked on a joint program with the Duval Corporation of Tucson, Arizona, to evaluate the industrial applicability of the models described in Part I. This program was conducted in a grinding circuit, which included a rod mill 12.5 feet in diameter and 16 feet long and a ball mill 12.5 feet in diameter and 14 feet long, at Duval Corporation's Esperanza property3. The rod mill was operated in open circuit and the ball mill in closed circuit with cyclone classifiers.

A sophisticated process of extracting ultrafine sulfide mineral particles of under 1µm size suspended in clay slurry has been developed through studies of electrochemical properties of particle surface. Experimental procedure and data of the process applied to some clay ores containing sphalerite and pyrite, and molybdenite and other sulfide minerals are reported. Discussions concentrated on the function of process reagents, particularly on various modifying reagents, and on the effect of dispersed or flocculated state of ultrafine particles in slurry which affect significantly the performance of the process.

The region of Asturias, located in the northwest of Spain, has an extensive mining history; coal, gold, zinc, lead, copper, cobalt, mercury, iron, manganese, fluorspar and others have been extracted from the antiquity. In the Asturian Central Coal Basin, the closure of all open pit coal mines and their restoration, the progressive closure of underground coal mines that is happening from the 1980?s, and the restoration of spoil heaps, provides post mining lands for alternative uses. In relation to metallic mining, the abandonment of all mercury mines without restoration in the 1970´s, has left significant quantities of wastes and mining works. More than thirty years later most of them remain without restoration. In these sites the legacy of the historical mining activities is apparent in the form of shafts, galleries and transversals, old mining installations and spoil heaps. Mine wastes have eventually become important Hg and As pollution sources, resulting in a widespread contamination of the surrounding soils and surface waters. Abandoned mines of other metals such as copper, cobalt, iron, etc. and industrial minerals such as fluorspar, have also left a mining legacy to take into consideration. In this context of declining mining areas, some remedial options have been applied to specific areas resulting in alternative uses as pastures, agro-forestry, industry and socio-cultural activities.

Providing a suitable protective water barrier pillar (PWBP) is common to reduce inundation hazards in underground coal mines. The imperative factors influencing its performance include the water head acting on the pillar, cover depth, pillar width, strength properties, and permeability characteristics. The mechanical failure of such pillar is a stress-controlled phenomenon, whereas the hydraulic failure is a strain-based phenomenon. A finite-difference numerical modeling approach was developed to study the hydro-mechanical coupled behavior of protective water barrier pillars. The mechanical stability was evaluated in terms of the percentage of failed (ZoF) and intact zones. The influence of the strain-controlled weakening on the permeability of the flow medium was studied through the coupling of the mechanical and hydraulic effects. The coupled steady-state model was used to estimate the outflow rate and its hydraulic stability. The adequacy of the protective pillar was also investigated by assessing mechanical stability and capability to resist hydraulic pressure against the maximum expected water head. A seepage rate-based classification system has also been proposed to evaluate the seepage potential and assess the hydraulic stability. The model has been validated for two case studies at the cover depth of 136–189.5 m and the existing pillar width of 16–42 m against the water head of 25–141 m.

The development of heap leach technology for the treatment of low grade gold and silver ores has led to a boom in gold production in the Western United States in the last 15 years. The heap leaching process consists of stacking the mined ore on a specially prepared leach pad followed by leaching with dilute alkaline cyanide solution. Depending on the nature of the ore, it may require crushing and/or agglomeration prior to stacking on the leach pad. As the dilute alkaline cyanide solution migrates down through the stacked ore, the precious metal values along with a portion of the base metal values present in the ore are dissolved to give a pregnant leach solution which is collected at the base of the stacked ore. The precious metal values are then recovered by zinc precipitation or by adsorption on activated carbon. Once all of the economic metal values have been leached from the ore, the spent heap leach pad, the leached materials, and associated process solutions must be decomissioned. Decommissioning requires that the spent heap leach pad along with the leached materials and process solution be treated to reduce the concentration of the residual cyanide, base metal cyanide complexes, and other anionic metal species to levels where they no longer represent a long tenn liability for the environment and the operator. The levels to which these components must be reduced is dependent upon the applicable water quality standards as determined by the responsible federal, state, and local agencies. As environmental awareness has grown, these standards have become increasingly stringent. A number of treatment options have been developed for the de-toxification of the process residues. These include natural degradation which incorporates bio-degradation, fresh water rinsing, alkaline chlorination, hydrogen peroxide, and sulfur dioxide/air. Each of these options has been reviewed with regard to relative effectiveness, generation of hazardous by­products, reagent handling considerations, relative costs, and time requirements by Denton, Iverson, and Gosling I. As an outgrowth of the program to develop Henkel's guanidine based gold extractants, COGNIS, Inc., the environmental ann of Henkel, has developed the CyanoMet R process for the extraction and concentration of the various cyanide and anionic metal species from the dilute aqueous alkaline solutions generated during the process of detoxifying spent heap leach pads. This paper describes the CyanoMet R process, its application to three different feed solutions, and treatment of the concentrate generated by the process.

Ore grinding mills are really just slowly rotating barrels, but barrels that are growing in size so fast that the application of electric drives for them is rapidly approaching a technology like that for wind tunnels or pumped storage drives. This application is particularly worthy of care because some 40% of the 75 megawatts of power used by a large copper ore concentrator, or some 60% of the 200 megawatts supplied to a large iron ore concentrator, are for grinding. These ore plants are located where the ore is, not where a utility happens to be. So, the challenge is not only to choose a drive and .power transmission for reasonable cost, high performance, reliability and minimum maintenance, but to afford the interface between mill drive and power distribution and source systems to minimize the whole ore plant's monthly power bill, or costs of self generation. Conclusions can be reached in optimizing a drive selection only for each particular ore plant's set of parameters, but by identifying the criteria for selection and then weighting each type of drive per criteria, yardsticks for final choice become apparent. This is the purpose of this paper. Grinding action takes place inside the barrel, where the ore charge is ground with the aid of balls, or mill length rods, or large chunks of ore as in autogenous grinding.

An alternative way to the normal practice of precipitation of jarosite, goethite, or hematite for removal of iron from zinc sulphate process liquors/ is to employ the techniques of solvent extraction. The process presented avoids the addition of any external alkali for the extraction of iron by integrating the leaching and solvent extraction steps in a hydrometallurgical zinc plant. By starting the leaching of zinc from the solid zinc calcine material with an organic solution of an acid liquid cation exchanger, the organic phase is loaded with the organic zinc salt from the direct reaction with zinc oxide. The residue from the organic leaching is transferred to a hot acid leach circuit where the remaining zinc oxide and the zinc ferrites will dissolve form¬ing an aqueous sulphate solution of zinc and iron. In the subsequent solvent extraction of iron from this aqueous leach solution, iron is exchanged with zinc from the organic phase. The commercial carboxylic acid Versatic 10 (Shell) is highly efficient for this integrated process of leaching and solvent extraction. The resulting iron-loaded organic phase is heated to 150-200 C in the presence of water whereby the iron will be directly precipitated from the organic phase as iron oxide of high purity and the regenerated organic acid is recycled to the organic leaching step for reloading with zinc.

Selenium is widely present in the environment at usually low concentration. It is mostly present in the environment at higher oxidation states, i.e., as selenites and selenates (+4 and +6 oxidation states respectively). It is rarely present as selenides (-2 oxidation state) and almost never found as the element (0 oxidation state). Selenites and selenates are generally soluble in water, as such they cannot easily be removed from water by precipitation. Selenites can form insoluble surface complexes with metal oxides such as ferric hydrous oxide and manganese hydroxide, and can therefore be removed that way. However, it is not so common to find selenites in natural environments as it will quickly oxidize to selenate in aerobic conditions. Elemental selenium can also be produced from selenites or selenates by using a reduction process; the end product is a colloid that can be destabilized to be removed from water using the right chemistry. Because of their toxicity, selenides need to be handled with care, and if present, it can form insoluble metal salts or, at low pH, be emitted as H2Se, a noxious and highly toxic gas. The most favorable selenium forms for its removal are therefore selenite and elemental selenium. Organo-selenium species play a crucial part in understanding selenium toxicity. There are a great number of these species. Basically, any organic species that contains sulfur has an equivalent that contains selenium. Of particular interest is the substitution of sulfur by selenium in the two sulfur-bearing amino acids, cysteine and methionine, resulting in selenocysteine and selenomethionine. Methylseleninic acid (CH3SeO2H) is another organo-selenium specie which has been detected in water treated by biological processes and which is biologically active.

Accurately predicting ground control conditions before mining requires a comprehensive exploration approach including photogeologic mapping (satellite and low altitude), delta modeling and, particularly, geophysical logging. In situ properties, density; strength indices; grain size; clay content; and aquifer location, can be estimated with this inexpensive technique. Geophysical measurements can be spot-checked by field or laboratory tests on core samples and by hydrologic (pressure) testing. Each phase of drilling should be accompanied by refinement of the delta model, facilitated by log signatures. Measured properties can then be projected into geologically similar areas. A properly planned program will delineate both the "worst-case" and normal support conditions. Suspect areas can be avoided by mine layout and the mine plan can contain support contingencies for anticipated trouble spots.

"INTRODUCTIONCrossrail will provide London and the South East of England with a world class, high-capacity railway to ease congestion on London’s public transport system and enable better access between business, residential and entertainment districts. At the heart of this £14.8bn scheme lies Farringdon Station, which will form a major interchange between Crossrail, Thameslink and London Underground. The £400m Farringdon Crossrail station was awarded to a joint venture of BAM Ferrovial Kier (BFK) in 2011, and comprises two ticket halls, two platform tunnels and a multitude of connecting tunnels all constructed using open face sprayed concrete linings (SCL). BFK appointed Dr. Sauer & Partners (DSP) as their specialist SCL designer. As the main contractor for both C300/C410, the Western Running Tunnels and Station Caverns, and also for C435 Farringdon Station, BFK were in a unique position to develop strategies to reduce cost, time and risk for the Client. One such innovation involved the continuation of the TBM drives for the running tunnels right through the length of the new Farringdon platform caverns. This created large diameter precast concrete pilot tunnels for the subsequent platform enlargement using SCL. The benefits of such an approach are described in detail by St.John et al 2015. BFK also introduced another alternative strategy to reduce cost, time and risk, by proposing to abandon the TBMs in the ground (“Turn & Bury”) permanently rather than recovering them through the ticket hall shafts. This de-risked the programme, enabling critical ticket hall construction to proceed unhindered. However, one consequence of this revised strategy was an area of increased underground congestion, with two SCL tunnels (RTE2 and ES2) and a bored tunnel (complete with abandoned TBM) in close proximity to a ticket hall excavation (see Figure 1) and a sensitive, listed railway structure. Faced with this complex geometry, and combined with challenging geotechnical conditions (Gakis et al 2015), the team chose to install enhanced monitoring to study the behavior of tunnel RTE2 and provide additional assurance that the tunnels were performing as predicted. Applying advanced 3D numerical modelling and taking into account the residual tensile strength of the SCL helped avoid unnecessary reinforcement installation in primary lining and/or early installation of a secondary lining in RTE2 prior to ES2 construction."

The administrative processes of coal mines are becoming increasingly complex. As society evolves into a more complicated structure with greater emphasis on individuality, government regulations reach deeply into every activity in an effort to force individuals into a standardized mold. These contradictory pressures add an extra burden to the administration of a mining operation. Recent years have brought a substantial change in the skills needed by mine supervisors and managers. As a result, a better understanding of the administrative functions is necessary. The mine superintendent has the overall responsibility for the mine; for effective operation he must be sufficiently knowledgeable to oversee all the complex functions that make up the mine. This chapter does not cover all the administrative requirements because of the variation in mine operation and in company policies and organizational structure. It does attempt to identify the administrative functions that would be required at a large mine with a preparation plant. It is assumed that the mine operation is decentralized with very little duplication of functions at the organizational levels above the mine. Thus each function is assumed to be relatively complete at the mine and under the general supervision of the mine superintendent.

Five sulfide minerals from the Magiwnt mine, southeast Missouri were analyzed for 31 trace elements in over 300 samples by laser microprobe spectrographic analysis of polished sections. The concentration of several trace elements shows a pattern of progressive variation with depth (space) and variation with different paragenetic stages (time) of each mineral. Factor analysis of the geochemical data shows sympathetic correlation both in space and in time of Bi, Cd, Ge, and Sn in galena and sphalerite, and Ni and Co in sphalerite and marcasite.

Research is probably the least understood and the most underrated or overrated, depending on the circumstances, function of the corporate enterprise. Some companies become engaged in research because they consider it to be vital to their very existence, others in order to develop new business, and some with no clearer objective than to keep up with the competition. Whole new industries have resulted from research activities, such as the Xerox copier, the transistor, the computer, and have affected considerably our way of life. Companies have prospered or perished by pursuing the successes or failures of their research organizations. However. despite the tremendous effect that research has had on our modern civilization and the billions which are spent on it annually, we have not as yet been able to develop many hard and fast rules as to how to conduct it effectively and to a successful end.1 This section discusses the role of research in the United States and in the mineral industry and describes a few of the criteria and guidelines which have been developed to assist in increasing the probability for success in industrial research. Broadly speaking, the purpose of industrial research is to make a significant contribution to the long-term viability and the profitability of the sponsoring company. The sum total of technological developments has been a principal factor in establishing the United States as a world leader and the controlling element in the nation's balance of trade with foreign powers. The international aspect of most mineral commodities is a significant factor in the business decision-making of most domestic mining companies and should be an important factor in the operation of research and development (R & D) programs in these companies. The National Science Board has reported that in recent yean other nations have been gaining on the United States over practically the entire range of science. 2,3 On the positive side, the NSB reported a strong position for the US in the results derived from its investment in R & D. If the United States is to maintain a favorable trade balance, it must create new know-how through technological innovation in order to create new industrial products, processes, and services for which there is a global demand. As expressed by Chauncey Starr, president of the Electric Power Research Institute, "Unlike resources found in nature, technology is a man-made resource whose abundance can be continuously increased, and whose importance in determining the world's future is also increasing."' In recent years, the greatly in- creased pressures for environmental quality and energy conservation have enhanced further the role of technical innovation in insuring the future survival of the domestic industry. Technology is the challenge of American industry, and it is a challenge which the mineral industry must also accept, for processed minerals are the very raw materials and energy on which all of industry is based, it is technology which makes a mineral deposit into an ore reserve. The Natural of Industrial R D Research is usually thought of as being either basic or applied. Basic or fundamental research is the quest for knowledge and need not have any practical objective. Applied research is the search for a solution to a particular problem and therefore has a specific objective beyond the acquisition of new knowledge. Development is the next stage to the applied research experimentation and it generally consists of larger-scale tests to establish the technical and economic feasibility of the new process or product and to provide design information for its industrial implementation. The terms research and development are usually interconnected for the good reason that in many cases it is difficult to define where one ends and the other begins. For instance, in many cases, thermodynamic, kinetic, corrosion, and other research studies, which are needed to provide design data for an industrial plant, may prod in parallel with the pilot plant activities preparatory for this plant in order to conserve time. Often the final stages of a development project may involve the trial production of a new product for markeing tests or the trial operation of a new process on a "semi-industrial" scale pilot plant. The interest in the use of micro- organisms in the leaching of sulphide minerals has been traditionally exploited as a scavenger process for the recovery of valuable metal by- products from waste ore dumps. Environmental concern on sulphur emission from conventional pyrometallurgical plants together with the cost of stack cleaning systems to comply with legislative control also indicate baccerial leaching to offer a low cost treatment for the processing of sulphide minerals. The paper describes the effect and limits of relatively coarse particles on the complete leaching of pyrite and its importance to the practical application in dump leaching operations of sulphide minerals. It has also been demonstrated that static leaching techniques have encouraging economic potential for process plant operations compared with agitated leaching systems.

In 1917, U.S. Coal and Coke Company, a subsidiary of U.S. Steel, opened Mine 31 and built the community of Lynch, Kentucky. For the time this was truly a major engineering accomplishment. It was documented in Howard N. Eavenson’s 1939 AIME paper, “Coal Through the Ages.” In 1996, Arch Coal donated the Portal 31 property to Harlan County for public use. In 2003 the Southeast Education Foundation, Inc. and the Kentucky Coal Museum plan to open the Portal 31 Exhibition Mine to the public to tell the story of Kentucky coalmining through the decades. This presentation will summarize the history of the project, efforts to bring it to reality, the engineering problems, and the challenges of providing a safe environment for visitors.
