The following material is excerpted from a presentation Mr. Morgan gave recently to representatives of the financial community. Introduction 1982 was a period of challenge for United States Gypsum Company because of reduced market opportunity. Housing starts for the first 10 months averaged a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1 million units, 9% below the comparable 1981 period when housing starts were the lowest in 35 years. Industry gypsum board shipments declined 9% from the already low levels of the same period in 1981. US Gypsum met the challenge with stringent cost reduction programs and aggressive action in the marketplace. In late 1981, anticipating market deterioration, the company's management adopted strategies to focus on two shortterm objectives: • Adjust operations to perform profitably in view of limited opportunities through more efficient operations and asset management. • Continue to strengthen U.S.G.'s resources and ability to take advantage of important market opportunities as the economy improves through selective expansion of production capacity in key growth markets. Concentration on these two objectives resulted in a nine month performance in 1982 that, while certainly not satisfactory by company standards, compared very favorably with that of principal competitors in terms of net earnings, margin on sales, and return on average stockholders' equity. To counteract limited market opportunities, U.S.G. focused on productivity improvement, cost reduction, expense control, and maximization of market penetration. Energy Use Improving performance encompassed all segments of operations. For example, efficient use of energy was a significant factor despite lower operating rates at most plants. Overall, in the third quarter of 1982 versus 1972, the company used 27% less energy per unit of production, a savings of $15 million in that quarter alone. These continuing improvements helped to partially offset constantly rising energy costs. A number of operations achieved superior results in the first nine months of the year compared with the same period in 1981. For example, gypsum board plants in Jacksonville, FL, and Sweetwater, TX, recorded 8% and 7% reductions, respectively, in energy use per unit of production. Paper mills in Oakfield, NY, Galena Park, TX, and Kansas City, MO, each reduced energy use more than 12%, while the Greenville, MS, ceiling products facility achieved a 16%o reduction. Safety Safety is another important element that received increased attention. U.S.G.'s safety performance over the past five years has consistently improved. In 1981 it was five times better than that of the gypsum industry; nearly 10 times better than all industry as measured by the National Safety Council; and almost 20 times better than all US manufacturing as recorded by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In addition to human concerns, this excellent record results in significant dollar savings that directly affect company results. In 1981, U.S.G.'s pre-tax savings in claims, premiums, and related expenses were about $20 million compared to the industries in which it competes. For the first half of 1982 performance improved further, with a cumulative lost workday incidence rate per 200,000 man-hours worked of only 0.27, an all-time record. Conditioning, in the conventional sense, means providing sufficient agitation and contact time for the reagents to react with the minerals in the ground ore. High intensity conditioning (HIC) on the other hand, as described in this paper, recognizes the need to exceed this minimum power input over a suitable length of time to induce aggregation of the finest size fraction. Time alone is not sufficient to achieve aggregation. The threshold minimum power input, kW/m3, depends on many surface properties of the fine particles and can vary considerably. In addition, the mechanical aspects and the chemical conditions must be matched to achieve good aggregation. Treatment of complex sulphide ores, requiring fine grinding for liberation, offers a large field for the application of HIC. Improved flotation rates and enhanced selectivity are some of the benefits that can be expected. This unit operation has now reached the level of commercial application. Lakefield Research considered HIC not from a fundamental point of view but as a means of solving difficult mineral processing situations arising in actual operating plants. This paper summarizes the effects of the various chemical reagent combinations that had been applied to promote faster, more selective flotation, higher mineral recoveries and cleaner separations, using HIC.

How many times have you said or heard someone say, 'What are you doing right now?" And how many times have you heard the reply, "Breathing air!" Probably never, or at most only a few times in a facetious vein. Breathing air is absolutely necessary to sustain human life, and yet most of us take it completely for granted. Beginning ten to fifteen years ago there was growing concern on the part of the general public that pollution of the air is a threat to man's health and welfare. Concurrently much thought and effort was devoted to the task of defining and resolving the problem of air pollution. In the course of this effort it has become quite clear that our National policy in this regard should be founded upon three basic axioms: (1) Action should not be postponed until emergency conditions make it compulsory; (2) The air cannot be purified after it is polluted, and (3) Air pollution control cannot be accomplished without close cooperation among all levels of government, industry, and the public.

[An innovative framework is proposed which most efficiently and systematically handles the large quantity of information needed for equipment failure and other non-performance analyses. It is based on the accepted engineering dimensions of mass (material), length (geometry), and time (MLT). To these are added human and machine factor. Several failure "Modes" are identified for each dimension, which are then subdivided into specific "Types". Material Failure Modes such as Separation and Slip are easily recognized, but others had to be established. Geometric Failure Modes are usually straight-forward, Obvious ones include Geometrics Design and Stability with more synthesized. Time Failure Modes are again largely self-evident such as Life and Chemical Effects, others are needed. Human and Machine Factors as failure modes are loosely assembled. The results contain strengths, but also organizational weaknesses which are noted. Lacking a better alternative its use is recommended.]

At present the feasibility of developing underground facilities for the storage of a number of products including toxic waste, oil, nuclear waste and low pressure gas is under investigation in e number of countries. A possible method of storage is in large excavations, Preliminary ventilation design work has identified that the climatic conditions encountered within these large excavations are a limiting ventilation pollutant within the ventilation system. This paper examines the design of a variety of sizes of excavation from a ventilation viewpoint. The main phases of an excavations lifetime can be divided into four main phases, these being construction, civil and mechanical fitting, storage, full and sealed. The paper details ventilation design options for the first two phases of e vaults lifetime, giving climatic simulations to assess the likely climatic conditions within the excavations for e number of facility depths. The options for climatic control are given and analyzed by means of climatic simulations techniques. l. INTRODUCTION The feasibility of developing underground facilities for the storage of a number of products is under investigation at present in a number of countries. This paper details a possible design for such a facility where the product is to be stored in large underground excavations. A facility layout has been designed with the aim of allowing concurrent construction and storage operations. Thus from a ventilation perspective the facility consists of two circuits , a construction ventilation circuit and a product ventilation circuit both of which are served by an intake and a return surface connection The construction and storage circuits are considered as independent of each other , any interaction in the form of leakage must be from the construction to the storage circuit. From the facility design a ventilation network was developed to assess the ventilation requirements of the facility. In analyzing the pollutant loads for the construction circuit two pollutants were recognised to be critical to the ventilation design , these being diesel exhaust fumes and heat end humidity. In this paper ventilation design options for the construction and civil and mechanical fitting phases of the excavations are analyzed by means of climatic simulation and options for climatic control within the vaults are outlined . 2. FACILITY DESIGN A schematic diagram of a facility design is illustrated in Figure 1. There would be two distinct ventilation circuits , one to service the construction operations and the second to serve the storage operations which occur concurrently with construction , the circuits are separated by ventilation bulkheads . Access to the facility for intake air is provided by two drifts, one to serve each circuit. Two shafts act as returns to surface. The facility consists of two distinct zones for the storage of two types of product. One type is to be stored in smell linear excavations. The second zone is for the storage of a second product in larger excavations. The maximum cross-sectional area and perimeter for the smell linear excavations are 456.25 m2 and 83.2 m, while for the larger excavations they are 440.1 m2 and 86.4 m. Excavation construction consists of three phases: 1. Initial pilot tunnel development between main intake and return to provide through flow ventilation. 2. Enlargement to produce the required finished cross-section. 3. Civil and mechanical engineering work to fit out the excavation ready for storage. It is proposed to excavate the excavations using drill and blest methods utilising diesel equipment. Spoil is to be transported to surface by a conveyor belt system. At any one time the maximum number of working places requiring ventilation will consist of ; 3 storage sites, 2 excavations under construction, 2 excavations undergoing civil and mechanical fitting. Treatment of plant effluent including waste water and associated soluble and insoluble substances, is of a primary concern of many process industries including mineral processing operations. The major objective of such treatment is the removal of such impurities which can interfere with the process through the use of recycled water, and/or to comply with environmental ordinances. For example, Ramirez and Clements (1978) state that molybdenum contents in the range of 19 mg/1 eventually poison ion exchange resigns used for the extraction of uranium. In addition, recent restrictions by the EPA on molybdenum discharge values for mining waste water necessitate removal of this metal to (0.5-1.0 mg/1).

For the purpose of this discussion a small flotation concentrator is defined as a facility having a designed ore feed rate of 1,000 metric tons per day (MTPD), or less. The decision to design and construct a small flotation concentrator is the culmination of a series of logical steps relative to the ex¬ploitation of a potential ore body. The information required for a rational and timely decision regarding plant design and construction is usually contained in a feasibility report. The information required in a thorough feasibility report has been summarized (1) (2) as follows: Type of mine or plant and proposed daily, monthly, and yearly production of all intermediate and final products. Quantity of indicated ore reserves. Location of project illustrated by a map showing surroundings, trans-portation facilities, and existing utilities.

"Top-down wall construction was selected to excavate the tunnel portal headwall areas of the ORB East End Crossing tunnel. Benefits included an expedited construction schedule realized by staging excavation and rock support with development of temporary construction access roads. Rock mass properties, proximity to right-of-way lines, and blasting impacts were considered to design suitable lift heights, intermediate bench locations, and permanent ground support systems to provide supported permanent excavations. Carbonate rock formations contained adverse subsurface geotechnical features including solution cavities, clay seams, weathered joints, pinnacled rock, and boulders, which were addressed by flexibility in design. The resulting over-break conditions and long-term water infiltration issues required economic design solutions. This paper discusses the unique considerations required during design of top-down tunnel portal headwalls excavated in carbonate rock formations including temporary excavation and permanent ground support systems which provided flexibility for unforeseen over-break, minimized construction delays, and provided long-term stability. PROJECT BACKGROUND The East End Crossing is an approximate 8-mile highway connection of the Louisville-Southern Indiana Ohio River Bridges East End Crossing (ORBEE) project. Currently under construction, this connection will link State Road 265 in Indiana with the Gene Snyder Freeway in Kentucky to form an outer loop bypassing the Louisville-Southern Indiana metropolitan area. This highway project features a 2,510-foot long, three-span cable-stayed bridge over the Ohio River, and a 1,680-foot long tunnel. The project, being managed by the Indiana Finance Authority and Indiana Department of Transportation, is scheduled to open to traffic by the end of 2016. The new twin three-lane tunnel under the historic Drumanard Estate requires steep cut excavations for approach and tunnel portal walls on the order of 60 feet deep through overburden soil and carbonate bedrock formations. This paper focuses on the design considerations for the permanent support of the top-down wall construction of the tunnel portal headwalls and approach retaining walls."

A study was conducted to examine the potential of diesel emissions control strategies based on retrofitting existing power packages with exhaust aftertreatment devices and repowering with advanced power packages. The retrofit systems, a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) and diesel particulate filter (DPF), were evaluated individually using a US EPA tier 2 (ter 2) engine operated under four steady-state conditions and one transient cycle. The DOC effectively curtailed emissions of CO, and to some extent organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), and aerosol number concentration. The DPF system offered substantially higher reductions in OC and EC mass and aerosol number concentrations. Both, the DOC and DPF achieved reductions in the aforementioned emissions without adversely affecting emissions of NO2 and nano-sized aerosols. The strategy of repowering with an advanced system was examined using a US EPA tier 4 final (tier 4f) engine equipped with a cooled exhaust gas recirculation system and diesel exhaust fluid-based selective catalytic reduction system, but not with a DPF system. The tier 4f engine contributed substantially less than the tier 2 engine to the EC and OC mass, aerosol number, and CO, NO, and NO2 concentrations. The tier 4f engine was very effective in reducing aerosol mass, NO, and NO2 concentrations, but it was not equally effective in reducing aerosol number concentrations. The implementation of viable exhaust after treatment systems and advanced diesel power packages could be instrumental to the underground mining industry to secure a clean, economical, and dependable source of power for mobile equipment.

The thematic mapper (TM) aboard Landsat II records image data at seven wavelength intervals or bands. Three record the visible region; three record reflected IR energy. A false color image combining bands 7, 4 and 2 rendered as red, green and blue respectively provides maximum discrimination of rock types in arid regions. Structural analyses and interpretation defines regional structures, large volcano-tectonic features intrusive complexes, all which localize mineralization. Special digital processing using the ratio: Band 3 / Band 1 can identify limonites and other iron minerals. The ratio: Band 5/ Band 7 identifies clays and alunite. These ratio images show features and patterns of hydrothermal mineral systems: ?patterns of sulfide and alteration zoning in large porphyry systems, and zones of strong silica, quartz-alunite-illite, and pyrite-sericite in epithermal centers. Thus, digitally processed Landsat TM images are a cost effective and rapid means to recognize altered areas and define targets for large mineralized systems.

In June 2022, Louisville MSD completed a 6.5 km (4-mile), 6.1 m (20-foot) finisheddiameter CSO conveyance and storage tunnel system located along the Ohio River in downtown Louisville, Kentucky. During construction, the Ohio River Tunnel alignment was expanded 2.4 km (1.5 miles) into areas where natural gas was detected. Without delaying construction, the project team developed and implemented a natural gas risk mitigation strategy to safely excavate the tunnel via TBM and install concrete lining. The risk mitigation strategy included the installation of gas-vent borings, increased tunnel ventilation, retrofitting tunneling equipment for “gassy” operations, and modifying the project specific HASP.

The use of a laboratory-scale magnetic fluid-based separator for coal separations was examined. A Frantz laboratory magnetic separator was modified by fabricating new pole pieces of the appropriate geometry to provide the proper magnetic field gradients. Two separation chambers, which were constructed of Plexiglas, were designed to fit between the pole pieces. A commercially available, water-based, ferromagnetic fluid was used as the separating medium. The separating density was changed by varying the current intensity of the electromagnet coil. Both batch and continuous separations were made using 0.59 x 0.50-mm and 0.18 x 0. 15-mm coal. The results are compared to those obtained using organic liquids.

Finite-difference digital computer models can be used to evaluate the effects of proposed mine dewatering and depressuring operations on ground-water aquifer systems. The effects of proposed dewatering and depressuring operations can be simulated for both underground and open-pit mining in confined and unconfined aquifer systems. Design of dewatering and depressuring well arrays to accommodate proposed mining operations in a variety of hydrogeologic settings can be accomplished through judicious application of well-documented and tested computer programs that are widely available from government agencies and universities. The speed and flexibility of the computer models can provide an economical means for comparison of alternative mining plans, and can be used to determine the optimum mine plan with respect to dewatering requirements.

The present study has investigated the bioleachability of low-grade and high-grade pyritic gold ores and the extraction of gold from the leach residues of bioleaching with thiourea solutions. Final gold extractions as high as 96% were obtained from the high-grade ore and above 93% from the low-grade ore. The gold extraction was found to follow the extent of pyrite biooxidation. Using a cyclic voltammetric technique and carbon-paste-FeS2 electrode it was found that the semiconductor pyrite oxidation involves many intermediate electrochemical reactions. Furthermore, the oxidation is solid-state diffusion controlled as suggested by chronoamperometric and chronopotentiometric measurements.Using Sand's approach, the activation energy of solid-state diffusion biooxidation of pyrite was determined to be AEa=22.4 kJ. A generalized model for the mechanisms of pyrite oxidation has been presented.

The existing Rome-Florence railroad capacity is inadequate for the traffic volume. To increase this capacity and to reduce the traveling time the Italian National Railroad Administration has decided to provide an additional 400% of rail capacity. This new rail line will be known as the Direttissima Roma-Florence line. It is planned to operate the trains on this connection at speeds of 250 km per hr. Table 1 lists the main design characteristics. [TABLE 1. Construction works for this new line have been divided by the railroad administration into eight sections. Five of these have already been committed to joint ventures. Castiglione Tunnel is a part of the fifth section, 42 km in length, which has been awarded to Consorzio Ferrofir which is a joint venture composed of the construction firms of Astaldi - Di Penta - Lodigiani - Sogene.

The Mercur Mine, developed and operated by Getty Mining Company, is designed to process 3,000 tons/day of gold ore from the historical Mercur Hill mining district. The mill process involves crushing, grinding, and cyanide carbon in leach for recovery of gold ores ranging from 0.08 to 0.10 oz/ton. During the mining of normal grade ore, a substantial tonnage of material containing 0.02 to 0.05 oz/ton is mined and would be available for heap leaching. Also, Getty Mining is developing methods to test and prepare lower grade material for heap leaching by rejecting a course rock fraction from the grinding circuit SAG mill. This lower grade fraction is suitable for heap leaching, and its removal will upgrade the regular mill feed. Other test methods are directed toward leaching techniques on some 4.0 million tons of tailings that resulted from roasting and/or cyanide leaching Mercur ores in the early 1900s. The natural carbons associated with the Mercur deposits require special treatment to reduce their gold adsorption effects when leached with cyanide.

Many investigators believe that column flotation cells offer significant advantages over standard mechanical machines for the flotation of fine particles. However, because of their unique design and operation, conventional techniques for flotation cell scale-up and design cannot be applied to columns. In an attempt to help alleviate this problems a population balance model based on first principles has been developed for fine particle flotation in a column. Two different terms have been considered in the model, i.e., transport and rate. Transport terms, incorporating fluid flow and bouyancy, are used to describe the movement of air bubbles, unattached particles and bubble-particle aggregates along the length of the column. Rate terms, which describe the bubble-particle attachment process, have been derived from first principle considerations. Because the model is based on first principles, it can be useful for the design, control, optimization and scale-up of column flotation cells.

Surface mining, from ore extraction to processing, requires many types of equipment to obtain the final product. Mine equipment often includes shovels, drills and haul trucks. Ore processing equipment, including plants, mills and concentrators, are also part of surface mining operations. Surface mining operations emphasize production. Production is where the bills are paid and fortunes are made. However, there must be support to keep the equipment operational. To most production people, equipment maintenance is a necessary evil. Maintenance is not glamorous work. It is often neglected when praise is being passed around. It is easy to recognize higher production, greater capacities, faster cycle times or more loads hauled. But who cares if an engine is replaced in 12 hours instead of 48? The answer is, everyone should - from the hourly miner to the mine manager. Surface mining equipment needs constant maintenance work. It must be lubricated, components replaced, electrical problems repaired and other problems addressed. Repair work for any surface equipment takes time away from production. It costs money. Maintenance costs cannot be avoided. However, they can be minimized. Minewide communication should include operations cooperating with maintenance. Traditionally, operations resist surrendering equipment to maintenance if it can continue to produce. The rationale is, every load that can be hauled today is money in the bank. If the unit is taken down, the money is lost. This thinking is prevalent in many surface mining areas, including the mill. "Not on my shift," the operator thinks. "Let the next crew worry about it. The problem with this thinking is in probability and statistics. The longer equipment goes without maintenance work, the higher the probability of equipment failure. When the failure does occur, it is certain to cause the equipment to remain down longer than if the maintenance department had been allowed to take it down. Many mining operations have closed early in their lives because of poor maintenance practices. This has become the industry standard because substandard levels of performance are acceptable. Management believes it gets five to six hours of work from maintenance people during an eight-hour shift. Actually, the industry average is less than two hours of work per shift. Real productivity levels of less than one hour are not unusual. There are few exceptions. However, a daily work schedule (DWS) will increase productivity at many properties by 50% to 100%. A 200% improvement is not unusual. The DWS will work. Maintenance people are among the most intelligent and motivated people on the property. They deserve the chance to be productive. [ ] In preparing a DWS, management needs to understand two productivity principles - the productivity spread and the real maintenance workday.

Sotiel mine is situated in the Iberian Pyrite Belt in southern Spain, some 40 km north of the port of Huelva. Although mining operations at the site date back to Roman times, the present mine came into production in 1983 and 5.6 million tonnes of ore had been extracted by 1993. The orebody is volcano-sedimentary and consists of fine grained copper, lead and zinc minerals in massive pyrite surrounded by slates and volcanics. Prior laboratory research had resulted in the synthesis of a new collector, belonging to the MercaptoBenzoOxazole (MBO) class that acts selectively towards Cu and Zn minerals after activation with CuS04. The MethylMercaptoBenzoOxazole (MMBO) version of this collector had been used for the laboratory flotation of Cu minerals and sphalerite activated by CuS04. This resulted in identification of the optimal physicochemical conditions for laboratory-cell flotation of the two minerals from samples of complex sulphide ores, and subsequently the reagent has been tested in the Sotiel plant (Spain). The plant has three flotation sections. With conventional re-agents, the first section yields a Cu concentrate grading 21% with a total recovery of 29%, and the second one yields a 40% Pb concentrate with total recovery of 34% and a 47% Zn concentrate with total recovery of 78%. Application of the new synthetic reagent in the copper and zinc circuits produces a more selective process with a decrease in re- agent concentration grade and recovery are increased by 2 and 9 points respectively in the case of Cu and by 1 and 3 points where Zn is concerned. Moreover, the penalty elements in the Cu concentrate are halved.
