An extensive drilling and laboratory testing program indicates that diagenetic dolomitization of the Oligocene Sombrerito Fm. limestone, southwestern Dominican Republic, is detrimental to the usefulness and quality of the potential construction aggregate resource. The first part of this program was the collection, photographing, and geologic logging of diamond drill cores to allow lithologic subdivision of the strata into potential quarry layers. The primary lithostratigraphic units are: I (youngest) approximately 10 m of white, dense marine limestone; II, approximately 5 m of white, interbedded dense and chalky marine limestone; III, 2+ m of tan, chalky calcitic dolomite. Unit I has been often altered by lateritic weathering and/or dolomitization; Unit II is often altered by dolomitization. The quarry layers were individually crushed, by core, into coarse aggregate sizes for chemical and physical (specific gravity absorption, MgSO4 soundness, sand equivalent, and LA degradation) analyses. The non-weathered units decrease in coarse-aggregate yield and quality with depth and dolomitization. Dolomitization typically causes about 5% lower yield of coarse aggregate, a sand equivalent of about 20 units below the original value, an increase in absorption of about 3%, an increase in the LA of up to 13%, and a decrease in the average 5-cycle MgSO4 soundness by about 17%.

The use of various electrochemical techniques to study mechanisms of sulfide mineral- flotation reagent interactions is briefly reviewed in this paper. Prior to such studies it is desirable to thermodynamically determine solution conditions favorable for formation of hydrophobic species deemed to be responsible for flotation. The thermodynamic equilibrium involving both the stable and metastable species can be conveniently represented by an Eh-pH diagram. Thermodynamics can also be used to predict conditions where a mineral might not float if depressants are present. Under favorable conditions of flotation there is competition between reactions leading to formation of hydrophobic species with reactions that lead to formation of hydrophilic species. Due to the sluggish nature of the reactions involving sulfide minerals, a knowledge of the kinetic behavior of the system is necessary. Electrochemical methods of investigation are wed in laboratory studies to (1) control the state of oxidation, (2) determine the type and amount of electroactive species present at the mineral surface, and (3) study kinetics of electrode processes. By combining electrochemical techniques and wetting measurements the identification of hydrophobic species that might be present at the mineral surface could be achieved. Both contact angle measurements at mineral electrodes or flotation in a cell equipped with a particulate bed electrode can be used for the wetting measurements.

Pistachio nut shells, an agricultural waste biomass, and Lewatit TP 214, a commercial sorbent, were investigated as adsorbents for the adsorption of platinum from dilute hexachloroplatinic acid solutions. Before the pistachio nut shells were carbonized, adsorption percentage was 65%, whereas Lewatit TP 214 ensured almost 100% adsorption. However, after the pistachio nut shell was carbonized at 1,000° C under an argon atmosphere, the platinum adsorption (%) increased two-fold. The effects of such parameters as sorbent dosage, contact time, temperature and solution pH on adsorption were studied in detail in batch mode. The adsorption equilibrium data were best fitted with the Langmuir isotherm model. The maximum adsorption capacities, Qmax, at 25° C were found to be 38.31 and 33.22 mg/g for the carbonized pistachio nut shell and Lewatit TP 214, respectively. The adsorption of platinum on both sorbents was found to be described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The results indicated that the activated carbon prepared from pistachio nut shells can be effectively used for the removal of platinum from acidic solutions.

PROJECT The Walgautunnel is the heart of a new hydro scheme in Western Austria, which is supposed to go into operation in 1984. With it's length of 21,4 km, a bored diameter of 6,25 m and an internal operating pressure of 13,5 bar it will be the largest water conducting tunnel in Austria. Even compared with some of the country's world-famous highway tunnels like 'Tauern' or 'Arlberg' it has to be regarded as a major tunneling project. Owner is the Vorarlberger Illwerke AG, a power corpo¬ration founded in 1924. In the course of the past 6o years this company developed the 'Werksgruppe Obere Ill - Lünersee', consisting of 6 major power plants and 4 large reservoirs. The installed capacity is 1.114 MW in the generating and 529 MW in the pumping mode. The total power output amounts to 1.916 GWh. The water for power generation comes from the glaciers of the Silvrettagroup, as this corner of the Austrian Alps between Vorarlberg , Tyrol and Switzerland is called. The Walgauwerk utilises all the water accumulated by the existing schemes as well as the so far unused run-off water, passing by in the river Ill. The intake to the Walgau-Tunnel is situated right beside the lower reservoir of the recently completed pump-storage plant 'Rodund II' at an elevation of 64o m above sea level. Though the head is a mere 162 m, 1 billion m3 of water will generate 356 GWh per annum. The power-output of the two Francis turbines is 86 MW.

Concern about environmental pollution goes back many centuries, but until recently most efforts to control it have been perfunctory and spasmodic, aimed largely at coal smoke and other visible pollutants. Air pollution is to a large degree a byproduct of our economic development, and scientific knowledge of the causes and character of such pollution is more extensive than the technology to handle the waste byproducts of our industrial civilization. The removal of all constituents foreign to the air from the effluents produced by an industrialized society is obviously impractical at this time. There is widespread difference of opinion regarding acceptable ambient air concentration levels for the Various pollutants produced by combustion processes, but there is basic agreement that the pollution of the atmosphere must be controlled and eventually reduced. The magnitude of the air pollution problem has been increasing rapidly because our expanding economy calls for an ever-increasing consumption of energy, and fossil fuels are a principal source of energy. For example, the consumption of electricity has been increasing at an average annual rate of approximately 8 percent over the last 10 or 1.5 years. Table 1 shows the estimated emission of the principal pollutants into the atmosphere in 1966. The approximately 90 million automobiles, trucks, and buses on American highways contribute the largest proportion of pollutants to the atmosphere, but that fact does not alter the growing problems of the coal industry. You will note that sulfur oxides, particulates, and nitrogen oxides are all products of the combustion of coal. Of these air contaminants, sulfur oxides are now receiving major emphasis in terms of research to develop effective means for control, Table 2 shows that the combustion of coal produces approximately 60 percent of the sulfur oxides discharged to the atmosphere. While the utilization of coal is the principal source of particulate matter, this is not considered as serious a problem as it was in the early part of the century because of technological developments that have produced sound methods for the removal of particulates from waste gas streams.

The Bismark Mine is located in northern Chihuahua, 150 km southwest of Ciudad Juarez. The ore deposit was discovered in 1979, and was placed in production in 1992. The production rate is about 2400 tpd from an ore reserve of 8.5M tonnes. Grades average about 8 % Zn, 0.5 % Pb, 0.2 % Cu and 50 g Ag per tonne. Substantial inflows of water into the under-ground mine complicate the operation. Complex metallurgy poses another challenge for the operators. Bismark was operated through a joint venture, Minera Bismark, S.A. de C.V., with U.S. and Mexican partners, but since early 1993, it is wholly Mexican-owned and operated.

As of the end of October, 1990, there have been eight spontaneous combustion heatings reported to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) at the No. 5 Mine. A reportable heating is defined as one with elevated surface temperatures of the strata greater than ll°C (20°F) above the ambient. The first heatings occurred in November, 1986. The last three heatings were located near the start line of "K" Longwall Panel in the southwest where mining had begun on May 21, 1990. All of the heated areas had been at the time of detection, or were sometime areas of high ventilation pressure differentials or high air velocities. All of the heated areas are in an expanded seam with associated, extensive floor heave which is characteristic of all of the expanded seam thus far exposed by development mining in the No. 5 Mine. Jim Walter Resources, Inc. submitted a plan to MSHA which would reduce the potential for spontaneous combustion at the No. 5 Mine by reducing high air velocities and high pressure differentials in the gob. These two parameters are the dynamics which feed oxygen to the pyrite, thus initiating the oxidation process which can lead to spontaneous combustion. No. 5 Nine operated under this plan for 29 shifts before mining on the longwall was stopped by MSHA and the Spontaneous Combustion Control Plan revoked. This paper briefly details the geology of the expanded seam and history of the heatings. It also gives a retrospective view of the operation under the Spontaneous Combustion Control Plan and reasons why it was revoked by MSHA. Currently, knowledge of the reaction process of the footwall coal seams at No. 5 Mine and other potential spontaneous combustion seams in the United States is limited. There are techniques used in the United States and other countries to minimize the potential for heatings in spontaneous combustion prone areas. The No. 5 Mine has attempted to utilize this current technology. However, in deep, gassy mines the problem is complex.

One-third of the world's and most US kaolin is produced from Late Cretaceous and Early Tertiary sedimentary strata in Georgia and South Carolina. The kaolin is part of a belt extending to Arkansas of aluminous lateritic deposits, including bauxite. Original sediments were profoundly altered by chemical weathering during Early Tertiary time. Mining exploits those uncommon deposits where extreme leaching and chemical recombination have produced a clay of nearly pure mineral kaolinite. Properly selected and refined, kaolin is an important pigment, filler, extender and chemical compound in the paper, paint, plastics, ceramics and catalyst industries.

Electromagnetic emissions from electrical devices may interfere with electronic safety systems or other devices in the mining environment. This electromagnetic interference (EMI) may cause unwanted changes in the performance of the affected devices and may cause safety issues for miners. To minimize the risk of EMI, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted research quantifying the electromagnetic emissions of several types of equipment that might be used in the mining environment. Previous research has shown that welding arcs can give off ultraviolet (UV) emissions, visible light, and infrared (IR) emissions that can cause health problem on skin and eyes. In this study, the electromagnetic emissions of the shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) process were monitored and measured. Several factors including operating mode (AC, DC positive or DC+, DC negative or DC-), current setting (low, medium, high, maximum), and electrode type were investigated to compare their effect on emission level. The test shows that the emission level from the welding process can be affected by those factors. The test data also shows that, among those factors, the operating mode has more influence on emission level than do current setting and electrode type. The information in this paper can be useful for the mining industry to better understand the emission in the 9-kHz to 500-MHz frequency range from a SMAW welder.

Despite the importance of froth flotation to the mineral industries as a means of separating various minerals, the commercial flotation reagents used have varied little in the last twenty years. Numerous articles and books are available describing existing flotation chemistry and its application, e.g., Fuerstenau (1962), Fuerstenau (1976), Aplan (1980), Somasundaran (1980), King (1982), Leja (1982), Ackerman, et. al. (1984), Crozier (1984), Hansen and Klimpel (1985). There are many reasons for this lack of significant new reagent development including the general utility and relative cheapness of collectors, such as xanthates, and frothers, such as methyl isobutyl carbinol and the glycol ethers. Another important reason is the inherent complexity of the flotation process itself coupled with highly variable and difficult to standardize feed materials which make reliable reagent comparisons difficult and seriously limit the use of theoretically based studies to "predict" new or optimal reagents. In addition, the higher cost of "specialty flotation reagents demands that their performance attributes be significantly greater than existing general all- purpose commercial reagents – something often difficult to prove in practice. Faced with this situation, a detailed applications research pro- gram [Klimpel (1980 ab, 1982, 1984 ab), Klimpel, et. al. (1982)] was organized from 1979-1985 on mineral flotation with the following goals: 1) the development of appropriate batch laboratory flotation testing techniques sensitive enough and statistically reliable enough to identify small differences in performance between different flotation tests (i.e., between various reagents, even those with relatively minor chemical structural changes); 2) the identification of mathematical models with appropriate numbers and types of parameters that have maximum statistical power to statistically distinguish between various time-recovery profiles; 3) the generation of laboratory and corresponding plant scale data in sufficient quantity and consistency so that the highly interactive nature of the "flotation system9' of chemistry/ equipment/operating conditions could be quantified; and 4) the invention and development of really new and unique reagents for giving improved flotation performance. Highland Valley Copper currently mines two low-grade ore bodies, Lornex and Valley. The partnership was formed in 1986. As a cost reduction measure, it was decided to use an in-pit crushing and conveying system to deliver the ore from the Valley Pit to the Lornex mill 3 km (1.8 miles) away and 175 m (575 ft) above the pit rim. The system uses two gyratory crushers that feed a series of conveyors to transport up to 130 kt/d (143,000 stpd) to the main stockpiles. This paper describes the performance of the in-pit crushing system as it is currently configured, as well as its evolution to date and future planned moves.

Dawsonite bearing oil shale of Colorado's Green River Formation offers a unique and vast (6.5 billion tons of Al2O3) resource of easily extractable alumina. The processing methods required by the thermal reactions dawsonite and its oil shale carrier also require production of shale oil, soda ash, and nahcolite as marketable coproducts. These production methods are presented. The alumina production process is contrasted with the Bayer process to describe technical advantages of extraction of alumina from oil shale which may offset the problems associated with processing a relatively lean ore. While alumina production from oil shale requires development of new technology, the technical problems appear solvable. Only the political problems arising from the now onerous and completely unnecessary Federal oil-shale withdrawal appear less solvable.

Strains of Bacillus polymyxa, preadapted and grown in the presence of corundum, were found to be capable of the efficient separation of hematite from alumina. Results of tests performed using binary hematite-corundum and ternary he- matite-quartz-corundum mixtures in the presence of cells and metabolic products separated from the adapted bacterial culture indicated that more than 99% of the hematite could be efficiently separated through selective flocculation after desliming. It was found that alumina-specific bioproteins and other nonproteinaceous compounds were secreted by bacterial cells after adaptation to the mineral. "The Confederation Line is phase one of Ottawa’s light rail transit, which consists of 13 stops and stations. The project’s center piece is a 2.5 kilometer (1.6 miles) long tunnel with three underground stations leading underneath downtown Ottawa and is constructed within feet of adjacent buildings. The downtown stations, Lyon and Parliament, are caverns approximately 16.5 m (54 ft) by 18 m (59 ft) in a horseshoe configuration constructed in rock, while the third station, Rideau, is approximately 22 m (72 ft) by 18 m (59 ft) in an oval configuration and constructed in mixed ground. The paper will discuss design decisions made early on in the project such as excavation method, unique construction sequencing, and equipment selection, and go on to include corresponding progress rates. The paper also documents design and construction challenges of large caverns in very close proximity to existing buildings and varying ground conditions. Finally, an overview of achieved construction milestones and a current construction progress will be presented. Station cavern excavation is expected to be completed in early 2016. INTRODUCTION The number of urban metro construction projects has certainly increased over the last decades. Cities are growing rapidly all over the planet and many are striving to keep up with the increased demand for public transportation. One of the most feasible types of inner-city transportation with the capacity for large quantities of passengers are metro (subway) systems. Still, large construction projects in dense urban areas often affect the city’s residents in mostly negative ways. During construction, residents face the obstacles of road closures, noise, dust, economic loss for businesses, and property value losses are common. In other words, individuals are directly affected by the way new infrastructures are planned, designed, built and operated. The tunneling industry offers unique opportunities of keeping these side effects to a minimum and possibly avoiding them all together. Although challenged by a variety of constraints (some of which will be discussed in this paper), urban tunneling applications offer a chance to keep cities environmentally, economically, socially, and culturally sound during construction."

Carbonaceous material (CM) from the Barrick Goldstrike Mines, NV, was characterized with respect to its gold sorption (preg-robbing) and gold recovery behavior. The breadth of graphite peaks measured by X-ray diffraction were used to calculate crystallite dimensions (002) of the CM. The (002) dimension was found to vary inversely with preg-robbing activity and directly with gold-recovery behavior, indicating that the degree of graphitization (maturation) experienced by the carbonaceous material is correlated with gold-loss during ore processing. The inverse correlation of preg-robbing activity was improved when percent preg-robbing was regressed against (002) crystallite size and carbon content. The (101) crystallite dimensions of all samples were calculated from laser Raman analysis, and were not found to correlate with preg-robbing behavior of the CM. BET surface area and micropore size distribution results were affected by grinding history, negating comparison of these characteristics between samples.

The objective of this work was to assess the influence of parameters such as residence time, solid content, and temperature in a process route towards purified rare earth liquor which could be adequate to produce marketable rare earth products. The steps of the process route proposed in this study comprised water leaching of a sulfated rare earth ore and removal of impurities through the purification of the rare earth sulfuric liquor, which is the product of the water leaching step. The sample used in the water leaching experiments was a sulfated rare earth ore produced by the reaction of a beneficiated rare earth ore with sulfuric acid followed by roasting at 700 °C for 2 h in a muffle furnace and cooling at 20 °C. The water leaching experiments showed that the best condition comprised a residence time of 30 min, temperature of 20 °C, and solid content of 10% w/w, resulting in a recovery of 71.3% of the rare earth elements (REE) and a lower impurity extraction, e.g., only 15.0% of Fe, representing the main impurity in the rare earth ore. Even when presenting low amounts of impurities, the rare earth sulfuric liquor still needed to be purified before it can be used in the production of marketable rare earth products. In the study, the rare earth sulfuric liquors were purified in two consecutive neutralization steps, first by dosing the limestone pulp to pH up to 3.5 and secondly by adding the lime pulp to raise the pH from 3.5 to 5.0. The application of two consecutive purification steps at 20 °C resulted in the highest overall REE recoveries (65.4%) throughout all the steps of the process, being 71.3% in the water leaching, 99.6% in the partial purification with limestone pulp, and 92.1% in the purification with lime pulp at 20 °C. Under this condition, there was a total elimination of Fe, P, and Th and a significant reduction in the Al, U, and sulfate concentrations in the purified rare earth liquor. The purified rare earth liquor attained through the experiment is expected to be amenable to be used in the production of marketable products due to the lower impurities/REO mass ratios.

Extensive record of tunnels excavated with SEM (sequential excavation method) in swelling grounds exists in literature: global experiences include successful tunnelling both through clayey and rock masses with time dependant deformation. However, TBM (tunnel boring machine) use in swelling conditions with high water pressures (EPB, earth pressure balance, machines or slurry shields) is much less documented, considering the lower expected impact due to the limited stress relief and operations under saturated conditions. This paper summarizes a number of studies conducted as part of the risk assessment and detailed design of a large diameter TBM tunnel in variable and challenging geological conditions. The tunnel alignment is driven through mixed face conditions including swelling soils and clayey soft rocks, prone to intense time-dependent deformations. The paper also describes the approach adopted for the design of pre-cast segmental lining subject to both swelling actions and high seismic loads, due to the regional active tectonic faults. The design of this lining included a detailed parametric study performed to handle the existing uncertainties related with ground characterization, potential deconnement and complex geological congurations.

Theoretically, controlling redox potential to a relatively low value and inhibiting jarosite formation on the chalcopyrite surface would be an effective strategy to accelerate the bioleaching of chalcopyrite. In this work, using limonite as seed crystals, the effects of the goethite precipitation process on the bioleaching of chalcopyrite were studied for the first time. The bioleaching results showed that the addition of limonite controlled the redox potential in an appropriate range and promoted chalcopyrite dissolution through the removal of ferric (Fe3+) ions. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope analyses indicate that limonite significantly induced the goethite precipitation process and inhibited the production of jarosite. We conclude that promoting the goethite precipitation process with limonite is an effective strategy in accelerating the bioleaching process of chalcopyrite.

Policies for reducing NOx emissions have led power plants to restrict O2, resulting in high-carbon fly ash production. Therefore, some potentially useful fly ash, such as the economizer fly ash, is discarded without a thorough knowledge of its composition. In order to characterize this type of fly ash, samples were collected from the economizer of a Portuguese power plant burning two low-sulfur bituminous coals. Characterization was also performed on economizer fly ash subsamples after wet sieving, density and magnetic separation. Analysis included atomic absorption spectroscopy, loss-on-ignition, scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, optical microscopy, and micro-Raman spectroscopy.
