"MOTIVATION Tunnel construction companies must keep costs low, finish projects in less time and still meet the high quality and safety standards. Therefore, their main goal is always to optimize the tunnel excavation process. Traditional geodetical methods are used since more than 100 years to ensure an exact breakthrough of a tunnel. Evolving sensors, sensor fusion and increasing computation resources opened new fields of application for geodetic solutions in tunneling. These solutions offer new ways to reduce costs and risks in tunneling. INTRODUCTION Nowadays in tunneling, geodetical measurement methods are not only used for guidance, but also for various other applications. This paper gives an overview about where geodetical measurements are used today and highlights their benefits for safety and costs aspects. Furthermore, advanced solutions are introduced. In progressive projects, they have already become state of the art technology and are in use daily. STANDARD GEODETICAL MEASUREMENT APPLICATIONS In drill & blast tunnel construction processes, there are many standard geodetical applications used in the different construction phases, each having different requirements regarding accuracy. In the excavation construction stage, guidance tasks and setting-out of various positions is done by the foremen. Thanks to simplified measurement tools, the foremen are enabled to carry out these measurement tasks themselves without requiring deep surveying knowledge. In contrast, deformation analysis and network measurement campaigns need sophisticated planning and a profound education in surveying. Therefore, these tasks are carried out by surveyors. Profile control and as-built documentation is required in each construction phase. Depending on the requirements of the project, this task can be carried out either by the foremen or a specialized surveyor. Table 1 provides an overview over typical surveying tasks in an underground project including information about who is doing the job and the according accuracy requirements. A composite material consists of two or more dissimilar components. These dissimilar components retain their identities when mixed together and contribute to the properties of the composite. A composite usually consists of two parts, the matrix and the reinforcing material, or extender that is added to the matrix. Typical materials used as the matrix in composites are metals, polymers, and ceramics. The reinforcing material can be added for any number of reasons. For instance, if the matrix is expensive, an inexpensive filler may be added to the matrix to lower the cost of the product without sacrificing properties. An example of this is calcite (CaC03) which is added to systems such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC), to lower the cost. Reinforcements may also serve as a means to enhance the properties of the matrix material. For example, carbon fibers are frequently added to plastics to increase their strength, and glass spheres may be added to plastics to improve flexural strength. Mg(OH)z is added to polymers to give the property of fire retardancy. The latter is the focus of this paper.

Prior to April, 1961, the coal charge to Clairtonts coke oven batteries was 3" x 0" mine waslied coal having approximately 6.0% to 7.0% moisture. Even at this size and moisture content, the arching, rat-holing and hang-up was excessive and the effective live storage of coal was only 60% to 70% of the rated capacity of the coal bunkers, depending upon the moisture of the coal. In addition, many production delays were encountered in the time and methods required to fill the larry cars. The need for an improved metallurgical coke led to the introduction of pulverized coal to a portion of the plant in 196 1. When the full potential of the pulverizing equipment was realized, we were able to serve seven batteries in our second unit of batteries with pulverized coal through two coal bunkers. The discharge hoppers of these bunkers were equipped with air vibrators to assist the flow of pulverized coal into the larry cars. The vibrators were helpful in this respect but required considerable maintenance and caused damage to the bin plates.

The Expanded Conveyor Technology, a rationalization of the conventional conveyor technology, allows us to apply the theory and principles beyond the current (perceived) limits. This was first prompted by the writer's advancements in Sandwich Belt High Angle Conveyors. The introduction defines the Expanded Conveyor Technology and outlines the range of applicability for the wide variations in conventional and non-conventional conveyors. The writing deals with the theory and design of sandwich-belt, high-angle conveyors in the context of the Expanded Conveyor Technology, including the equations of friction, hugging pressure and the continuity of hugging principle; curvature constraints and criteria for tension, curvature, trough, and belt construction; and drive and tension analysis, load sharing and traction, including "derived load equivalents."

The exposure of miners to radon gas and its airborne daughter products is a serious health problem which has long been recognized in the uranium mining industry. The association of high exposure to alpha particle emitters with incidence of lung cancer is well established. There continues to be a pressing need to reduce and eventually eliminate the high incidence of occupational lung cancer among uranium miners through the development of new and improved measurement and control technologies. This paper highlights the current efforts of the Bureau of Mines radiation hazards research program. It is aimed at obtaining a fundamental understanding of the behavior and transport of radon and radon daughters, developing more accurate and reliable instruments and measurement methods and developing cost-effective control techniques. Also discussed are the most recent accomplishments and the future research plans of the program.

ERIC GUTIERREZ, Knowledgescape: Our next speaker is Randy Ynchausti. He's the director of development, Knowledgescape systems division, of EIMCO Process Equip- ment Company. The title of Randy's talk is "An Expert Control System for Phosphate Beneficiation." RANDY YNCHAUSTI: System integration. How does the systems integrator survive when caught between plant engineers, plant management, and third-party engineering firms, and stay within the budget of the corporate goals? I'm not sure that anyone knows how to do all of that on one project. Results are critical when we talk about how systems integrators work with operating people, how the operating people want systems integrators to work with them, and how both groups work together so that at the end of a project, you have been provided with solutions that meet your needs and solve your problems at a fair price. How does the integrator's role change when working with different types of professionals, such as plant managers, plant engineers, engineering firms, or other system integrators? Finally, what is the dynamics of people working with machines and providing services and solving needs? The average number of employees per pound of copper processed has decreased significantly during the past 15 years. I would dare to generalize and say that the average number of employees per whatever unit of measure we have in whatever industry we work in has decreased over the last 15 years. From a system integrator's perspective, there are some clients who lack a bit of internal expertise as corporate downsizing occurs, and that's one reason why we go out to system integrators or third-party vendors and buy things from them to solve our problems. Downsizing really amounts to savings, but more than that, I think Brian expressed this and I agree with him, it also amounts to a cost. Unfortunately, most of us count the savings and none of us count the cost in that approach. It's easy to count the savings, which is one reason why we count it so quickly. Maybe that also accounts for why we set our pencils down so quickly after we get that dollar value. Maybe we should pick that pencil up every once in awhile and refigure the expense, the cost to us, and determine what we're going to pay during the next year or two or three in losing that expense, or that staff. It is well known that the chemical environment determines the success of the flotation process, however its characterization and control is difficult to achieve. This work evaluates the use of various measurements, including mineral potential measurements, in gaining an understanding of the influence of varying parameters such as the milling media and the reagent suite composition on the flotation performance of a platinum group metal (PGM) bearing ore. The results showed differences in the response of the various mineral electrodes to the different conditions, however the changes in flotation performance of the different minerals in the ore could not be wholly described by the electrochemical changes, demonstrating the limitations of these measurements.

A really extensive acid sulfate-altered and mineralized rock in the southeast Red Mountains area is noted for its association with naturally occurring and mine-related acidic and metal-rich waters. Integrated geologic and aqueous geochemical studies demonstrate that the degree of metal mobilization and acid production in natural waters correlates well with the type of hydrothermally altered rock and structural features in which these water interact. Quartz-sericite-pyrite, quartz-alunite, and argillic alteration assemblages are associated with some of the most naturally acidic, high-metal waters in the study area; calcite-bearing propylitic rocks are related to the most pristine waters and buffer sulfate-rich, acidic waters produced by pyrite oxidation. Trace metals in natural waters are mostly derived from enargite, zinc-rich tetrahedrite and sphalerite. Pyrite oxidation contributes very little with respect to base-metals in these natural waters.

Inspite of the growing demands worldwide, thermal coal must compete in the market both in price and quality. The design and performance efficiency of coal preparation plants is thus crucial to the survival and profitability of a coal industry. While the coal recovery influences the cost of production, the quality produced by a preparation plant determines the selling price. Several coal preparation plant simulation models have been developed in recent years to help Improve the performance of coal preparation plants. A research project was recently conducted at Southern Illinois University to evaluate the practical applicability of such a model. The results of this study are presented and discussed.

Reliability of the compressive strength of a coal seam determined in the laboratory is often subjected to debate. Effects of the coal seam's inherent characteristics, specimen preparation, testing procedure, testing condition, and a number of tests often result in drastic variation of the strength data. This paper deals with the development of a testing procedure for determination of coal seam compressive strength in the laboratory. Coal samples from two different coal seams were tested. First, the inherent characteristics of each coal seam such as coal structure, Hardgrove Orindability Index (HOI), Slake Durability Index, proximate analysis, and mechanical properties namely Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio were determined to categorize them in terms of their characteristic severity liable to produce variable strength data in typical laboratory tests. Second, two commonly used laboratory specimen shapes namely; cylindrical and cubical, were tested to determine which shape produced the least variation of data and reproducible strength values. Third, four loading rates within the static testing range (Le. 0.007 MPa/s (1.0 psi/sec), 0.07 MPa/s (10 psi/sec), 0.34 MPa/s (50 psi/sec), and 0.7 MPa/s (100 psi/sec)) were used to determine an ideal loading rate. Finally, the number of test samples required to produce strength data within the acceptable standard deviation, considering coal seam characteristics were established.

The present study examines the use of two vs. one stage of hydrocyclones in a pilot scale ball mill circuit. The approach used for doing this is based on computer simulation with mathematical models that explicitly account for the grinding mill/classification system interaction. Parameters for the ball mill model are obtained using a short-lived radioactive tracer method in open circuit tests of the study mill. The hydrocyclone model, based on the size selectivity concept, is developed and validated in standalone testing of the study hydrocyclones. Simulation procedures are validated through actual tests of the closed circuit grinding configurations of interest. Results of the evaluation indicate that two stages of hydrocyclones in the study circuit would improve classification, increase productivity and lead to more closely sized circuit products when compared to the conventional one stage hydrocyclone circuit. A computer simulation approach for comparing these circuit configurations in larger scale grinding circuits is also suggested.

The Cove gold-silver deposit is located 50 km southwest of Battle Mountain, Nevada and 1.5 km northeast of the McCoy Mine. Total proven and probable reserves are 48.7 Mt (53.7 Mst) with an average grade of 1.85 g/t (0.054 oz/st) Au and 87.1 g/t (2.54 oz/st) Ag. Mineralization is hosted by Triassic carbonate and siliciclastic rocks in two separate orebodies. Oxide ore consists of disseminated gold and silver in clay-altered, manganese-flooded limestone. Sulfide ore is dominated by pyrite-sphalerite-galena veins in siliciclastic rocks and sandy dolomite. Gold and silver occur in the native state, associated with the base metal sulfides. Mineralization is interpreted to be the distal expression of a porphyry system. The McCoy gold (copper) deposit is interpreted to be the proximal expression of the same system.

Limestone resources for industrial, constructional, and agricultural uses occur on the surface and at minable depths in several areas along the Ohio River and its navigable tributaries in Kentucky. Operable thicknesses of high-calcium and high-carbonate limestones suitable for use in cement and lime production, steel manufacture, environmental-control measures, and other special uses are documented in Ordovician and Mississippian formations by analysis of 0.3-meter (foot-by-foot) samples. Active and potential mine and quarry sites afford access to water transportation and proximity to a number of industrial and metropolitan centers. Geologic factors affecting the distribution of deposits include the Cincinnati arch, regional dip into the Appalachian and Eastern Interior basins, complex faulting in and near the Western Kentucky fluorspar mining district, and late Paleozoic erosional unconformities in northeastern Kentucky.

Dust formation and reaction mechanisms of copper matte particles were investigated in simulated flash oxidation conditions. The granulated and ground matte consisted of 72 wt% Cu, 4 wt% Fe and 21 wt% S. Experiments were conducted by using a laminar-flow furnace with a reaction gas composition ranging from 20 vol% to 75 vol% O2 in nitrogen. The particle feeding was carried out by the single-particle method and samples were quenched after a specified reaction time (approximately 0.05-004 s) in a cold water film. Experimental temperatures were between 800 and 1300°C. Chemical analysis was used to determine oxidation degree, and an optical and scanning electron microscope combined with energy dispersive analysis was used for characterization of the reacted particles.

Results from the first part of a two-part investigation of the stability of highwalls in open-pit coal mines in the Paleocene Fort Union Formation of the western Powder River Basin of Wyoming and Montana indicate that these highwalls are subject to time-dependent deformation. Field investigations and laboratory physical properties tests of coal and overburden rocks suggest that several factors influence highwall stability. Some of these factors are rebound of overconsolidated rocks, desiccation, water, orientation and spacing of fractures, and strength and deformation properties. Factors of safety for a typical highwall in the study area (calculated by the finite element method) may be less than 1.0 when open fractures are present and the highwall has degraded. Although it is concluded that most open-pit highwalls in the Fort Union Formation within the study area have adequate short-term stability, these highwalls do deteriorate and become progressively less stable. Because of this, postmining failures are common and stability conditions could become critical if mining were delayed and then resumed after a period of several months. The second part of the investigation will utilize field measurements of rock-mass properties and instrumentation of actively mined highwalls to obtain data for comparison with the results of the initial investigation. Because the height of highwalls will increase as the more shallow coal is exhausted, these data will also be used to predict the behavior of slopes higher than those presently found in the western Powder River Basin.

The mineral aggregate industry is the world's largest mining and processing endeavor, yet it is graced with little of the romance or public awareness that accompanies mention of gold, silver, iron, copper, uranium, or aluminum mining efforts. Much of this reaction is undoubtedly due to the fact that the uses to which crushed stone and sand and gravel are normally put are not fully recognized or appreciated by the general public. Few individuals ever have occasion to purchase mineral aggregates for anything other than use for decorative shrubbery beds or walkways. They may, however, buy ready-mix concrete for a new patio, bituminous concrete for a new driveway, concrete blocks, or other building materials for a new room and never realize that the primary ingredients of their purchases are either direct or indirect products of the mineral aggregate industry. The average person driving past an operating crushed stone quarry or an active sand and gravel pit rarely realizes the economic impact the industry, represented by that operation, exercises on the general economy. He is not aware, nor does he really care, that elements of the modern comfortable environment to which he has grown accustomed rely to a great extent on the products of the crushed stone and sand and gravel industries Iron and steel, glass, cement, agriculture, and highway and building construction are but a few of the major industries to whom the products of the mineral aggregate industry are basic. Without these industries or without the stone, sand, and gravel basic to them, most of the major elements of our modern day civilization would be non-existent.

Introduction In the same way that a blueprint communicates informa¬tion about a structure, a systems architecture should provide information that guides the construction and implementation of a computing system. Taking the blueprint analogy a step further, a plot plan can also show where, in the "bigger picture," a particular design fits (if in fact it does) and what a builder needs to know about the environment in which he or she will operate. In the context of business systems, a meaningful architecture should convey the following: • the primary purpose of computer-based systems rela¬tive to particular tasks or operations, • the relationship of the systems to each other and an indication of their interaction and dependencies, • the relationship of the systems relative to the organiza¬tion and its objectives, • indications of where IS/IT resources can best be allo¬cated to support the organization and • the overall context in which new systems and technolo¬gies can be assessed for both their impacts on current systems and on the organization itself. In theory, a well-designed systems architecture should allow an organization to focus its resources on those aspects of its business that matter most, thus, leveraging investments in information technology to a competitive advantage. In addition, the way that a computing systems architecture is represented should be un¬derstandable to non-IT staff, and it should be eas¬ily recognized by the people it supports. This pa¬per attempts to show that a meaningful systems model exists and that its applica¬tion to mining can achieve the desired results. The following discus¬sion is based on the au¬thors interpretation of a concept referred to as the computer integrated manu¬acturing (CIM) model, as developed by Allen-Bradley. An inherent strength of the CIM approach is that the model combines aspects of business-reporting structures with the manufacturing process itself. What results is a systems frame¬work that is aligned with relevant business processes and is, therefore, easier for non-IS/IT personnel to interpret. The successful application of the CIM model can be seen in a large number of both discrete and process-manufacturing facilities throughout the United States. This paper provides a brief overview of the CIM model and then describes how the model can be applied at a conceptual level to the mining industry. Finally, this paper proposes an extension to the CIM model that the authors believe will make it easier to understand and apply. CIM model As shown on Fig. 1, the CIM model begins with the most detailed levels of process equipment and works its way up to the highest level of consolidated financial reporting. Systems at each level are characterized by common attributes, users, time frames, etc., providing a clear picture of their interac¬tion. Further analysis of the relationships between systems and between levels provides insight into the opportunities for integration. Regardless of the industry or processes involved, the CIM model provides a framework in which the characteristics of systems and the data they manage can be predicted based on the nature of the business function they support. In general, as data moves upward from the lower rungs of the CIM model, it changes from de¬scribing the physical na¬ture of a process to describ¬ing its financial aspects (e.g., from productivity to cost). The time frame to which data applies also transitions from a very short duration, perhaps only milliseconds, to financial or regulatory reporting time frames that may span years. In a simi¬

"Longwall top-coal caving (LTCC) mining technique is one of the important methods for underground thick seam extraction in China. The coal seam in LTCC panel is divided into two parts: bottom-coal and top-coal. The bottom-coal is mined by conventional longwall method while the top-coal is mined by caving method. The top-coal caving process in LTCC and block caving process in metal mine are both gravity flow of loose ore/coal blocks. However, the presence of caving shield in LTCC makes the characteristics of drawing body shape in the two caving processes differ a lot. This paper discusses the influence of caving shields on the characteristics of drawing body shapes in light of recent studies of the top-coal drawing process. The theoretical model for describing the drawing body shape in LTCC is proposed both along the seam strike and seam inclination. Then, the experimental data are used to validate the correctness of the theoretical model. Furthermore, two examples of how the theoretical findings assist LTCC mining are given and discussed.INTRODUCTIONLongwall top-coal caving (LTCC) mining technique and large-cutting-height mining technique have been widely used for extracting thick coal seams in China. About 0.6–0.7 billion metric tons of coal come from longwall top-coal caving panels every year.
