The Trolleyphone was the first successful application of carrier current techniques to a DC power distribution system to provide voice communication between fixed points and moving locomotives and traveling cranes, This was a significant breakthrough because this not only in itself provided a useful new tool for industry, but the knowledge gained in the transmission of voice communication is paving the way for many other things, chiefly, remote control and indication systems which promise to have a far reaching effect during the upcoming age of automation. Once it has been established that we can communicate between men who operate machines, the next step will be to operate the machines themselves.

This paper presents the results of an analysis and summary of relevant literature on the mechanism of cementation of metals in acidic aqueous media, with the aim of reconsidering the conventional assumptions. The simplicity of the process as a mere galvanic metal displacement is discussed, and the real effects of pH and hydrogen pressure in different cases assessed. Finally, an alternative mechanism scheme with respect to the role of hydrogen species, in agreement with reported data, is proposed.

A state of the art computer simulation package, named UTAH-MODSIM is being developed. This package can run on a mainframe (eg. UNIVAC) as well as on a microcomputer (eg. IBM/PC with at least 512 kBytes of core memory). Friendliness was the major concern in developing this software. The user simply generates a complete flowsheet by presenting the flowsheet on a graphics terminal. This flowsheet defines the circuit to be simulated. With the minimum required data, the user can obtain a complete mass and water balances within a few minutes. Moreover, this package will provide scale-up and capital cost information of specified equipment relevant to design. In order to illustrate the utility of this software, three design examples are given. They are: a) A typical multistage crushing plant. b) A reverse closed grinding circuit comparing one stage with two stage classification. c) A standard closed grinding circuit suitable to liberate a specified fraction of chalcopyrite from a copper ore.

This paper describes an empirical constitutive model for underground excavations in rock which equates the deformation modulus to the ratio of the principal stress difference to the major principal strain. The model requires failure criteria which define both the stress difference at failure and strain as a function, in part, of rock mass classification ratings (i.e. Bieniawski's RMR and Barton, Lien and Lunde's Q). Available failure criterion allows reasonable estimates of the stress difference for intact rock as well as rock mass. However, a suitable failure criterion for estimating strains at failure for rock was not available. Toward this end, this paper describes the development of an empirical criteria for defining strain at failure for intact rock as well as methodology for developing similar criteria for rock mass.

In 1997, Central Contra Costa Sanitary District undertook the design of the Martinez East Side Trunk Sewer Improvements Project. Microtunneling was specified for approximately 1,035 meters (3,400 feet) of 600-mm (24-inch)diameter pipeline to be installed through estuarine soil deposits (San Francisco Bay Mud) and alluvium beneath the congested city streets of downtown Martinez, California. Directional drilling was specified for approximately 275 meters (900feet) of 200-mm (8-inch) diameter pipeline in four separate segments to be drilled through bedrock within narrow utility easements between residential properties. This paper presents a case history for the design and construction of themicrotunneling and directional drilling aspects of the project.

Waterjets and diamond wire saws have raised the productivity and lowered the cost in dimensional granite quarries. While the cost of diamond wire sawing is substantially lower than waterjet, the judicial use of the waterjet can simplify and improve the overall operating efficiency and predictability. Granite is the hardest commercial stone and only the gem-stones garnet and diamonds are harder. The introduction of industrial diamonds has made it possible to quarry and process granite at costs equal to or less than other natural stones – making granite, with its superior properties, the best value available.

The imposition of non-market regulations, such as the proposed SO2 standards for coal combustion, will typically lead to less efficient (thus more costly) production in a free enterprise system. For the coal industry these increased costs will occur in several ways, among which are mining less accessible low sulfur reserves and transporting low sulfur coal to distant markets. There are, of course, social benefits of reducing the S02 emissions from the use of high sulfur coal. The social benefits include decreased health risks, reduced damages to property, and certain unmeasurable benefits associated with the aesthetic appeal of clean air. Proponents of Federal S02 standards argue that the benefits gained from reduced emissions will exceed the costs borne by the coal industry and society in general in meeting the regulations. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the degree to which costs of meeting future energy demands from coal will change under different sulfur standards. No attempt is made to estimate the benefits of imposing regulations. Specifically, the impact of SO2 standards on the private costs of meeting regional coal demands, the competitive positions of the nation's major coal producing regions, the degree to which strip mining as opposed to underground mining will be feasible, the amount of coal being processed, and the amount of coal transported over major rail routes will be analyzed.

The Pan American Mine, in southeastern Nevada, is about 26 miles west southwest of Pioche, Nevada, and about 266 miles southwest of Salt Lake City, Utah. The mine is located in the Comet Mining District, and since the ore occurrence is generally the same in the Comet and well known adjacent Pioche Mining Districts, the history of the two shall be considered the same. The Pioche District began about 1869 with the production of high grade gold and silver from fissure veins in the Cambrian Prospect Mountain quartzite. Peak production was reached in 1872 and then declined with sporadic production until 1924, when Combined Metals Reduction Co. shipped its first, complex sulphide ores mined from the CM bed at Pioche. Extensive ore bodies in this CM bed attracted interest in the same bed in the Comet District. Small pockets of high grade silver-lead were mined from fissures cutting the CM and other limestone beds above. Exploration in the CM beds at this time proved a large area of mineralization too low grade to be considered ore.

The development of the Montreal metro extension Line 5 -Blue Line- toward the northeast are located between the existing Saint-Michel station and Anjou. It consists of 6-km long two-track tunnel, five new stations and six auxiliary structures. Most of the tunnel (5.5 km) will be excavated by a 9.6 m diameter shielded rock TBM and supported by a precast segmental lining system. TBM will be fitted for probing and preexcavation grouting to control water inflow into the tunnel during the excavation. This paper presents major design aspects of the TBM tunnel including alignment, geological condition, spaceproofing, precast segmental lining, and geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring.

The selection of belt conveyor drive systems (*) is the subject of ongoing investigation. Frequently this choice has been governed by an incomplete perspective on the major considerations. A more comprehensive and objective approach is desirable. This paper presents additional factors which hopefully will broaden this perspective. BACKGROUND Conventional belt conveyors are powered by electric or electro-mechanical drives(*) mounted at the conveyor's head, tail, intermediate return span, or a combination of these (Fig. 1). A list of the drives reviewed is given in Table I. The following are main elements influencing the selection of the drive system: 1) dynamic characteristics, 2) economic factors such as capital cost, plant spares compatibility, reliability, availability, maintainability, and 3) environmental constraints. The principal dynamic characteristics of concern are the reactions of belt forces generated by the drive system during starting of the conveyor. Another attribute for consideration is the application of multiple driven pulleys used to 1) lower the conveyor's belt tension requirements, 2) increase the expected tonnage throughput, allowing for possible drive component failures, and 3) increase the plant spares flexibility related to the drive assembly.

During recent years fuel consuming industries of the United States have been caught between environmental restrictions and the uncertainty of obtaining an inexpensive fuel. With the advent of the National Energy Act of 1978 there has been added impetus to switch from gas and oil to coal. For industrial furnaces and boilers that were designed to bum coal, returning to an available compliance coal might be feasible. However, furnaces and boilers designed for gas or oil cannot reasonably be converted to coal unless the coal is initially gasified. All cases, nevertheless, depend upon the availability of an adequate structured coal of a compliance composition, a challenge to the coal mining industry. The foregoing problems have contributed to the current energy-coal crisis of today's economies. It therefore would be worthwhile to capitalize on previous experiences of the mineral processing industry.

The development and scale up of hydrothermal synthesis processes for manufacture of high performance materials is discussed. Traditional hydrometallurgical processes are reviewed, leading into a discussion of process development concerns for manufacture of modern materials. Three case studies are presented, including a piezoelectric ceramic, barium titanate for multiyear capacitors, and high purity chromium metal. Factors for selection of reactor design are presented, as well as results of scale-up studies on the three products.

At the Kakogawa works of Kobe Steel. Ltd., the agglomeration facilities are composed of a pelletizing plant and sintering plant. This aim is to utilize raw materials efficiently and stabilize the raw material resources. Therefore at Kakogawa works, the blast furnaces (BF) have been operated with high pellet ratio and various developments for pellet properties have been achieved to improve the blast furnace performance. These developments include dolomite-fluxed pellets, new-porous pellets and crushed pellets. As a results of these improvements, pellets have achieved almost the same performance as sinter at high temperature regarding properties such as the softening, melting and reduction behaviour. However, some problems on shape have remained to be solved. Spherical pellets flow easily into the center of the furnace and form mixed layers of pellets and cokes. Therefore, in BF operations with these pellets it becomes more difficult to keep proper and stable gas distribution.

INRTODUCTION Annual coal production rose to over 1.03 billion st (931 Mt) in 1990. At the same time the number of mines producing this increased tonnage has decreased over 60% in a 30-year period, from 9230 mines in 1960.1 The great increase in production made possible through continued mechanization requires greatly improved loading facilities just to get coal away from the mine. Also the trend to combine production from more than one mine and cleaning it in a single preparation plant continues. A recent census of US coal preparation plants indicated that 310 plants were in operation.2 In addition to increased loading capacity, storage and blending facilities are more necessary both at the producer and user end. In this climate of rapidly changing technology, any written account is faced with the possibility of obsolescence before its appearance. Thus, this chapter seeks to define the common and current practice in coal loading and storage facilities with the full knowledge that this practice is an ever-moving target. FUNDAMENTALS OF COAL STORAGE Storage of coal is becoming an increasingly important part of coal handling systems at mines, particularly since the advent of the unit-train concept in transportation. In order to take advantage of reduced transportation rates on trainload shipments of coal offered by unit-train movement, operators have found that storage is an economic necessity. In unit-train practice, large predetermined quantities must be loaded in relatively short periods of time, as opposed to conventional practice where coal is loaded at a speed dependent on the production capacity of the mine and/or the cleaning capacity of the preparation plant. Clean coal storage is generally practiced in order to accomplish one, or a combination, of the following objectives: 1. To load out promptly and economically. 2. To facilitate blending in order to even out chemical and physical inconsistencies and to prepare desired products or to attain maximum product uniformity. 3. To store certain sizes whose prices and market demand fluctuate with seasons and to permit shipping in good weather. Coal storage, then, is necessary and desirable, both from production and utilization standpoints. There are, however, several undesirable aspects attendant to the storage of coal, the most important of which are oxidation and spontaneous combustion, changes in properties which may affect utilization of the coal, degradation of coal due to rehandling, and the added cost of handling and storage facilities.

This chapter describes the nature and occurrence of the principal clay minerals that are used as ceramic raw materials, explains how these raw materials are used to produce finished goods, and summarizes positive and negative trends that will affect future demand for raw materials and products in the ceramic industry. The term ceramics was derived from the ancient Greek keramikos (a clay jar). A ceramic product is a material that has been fired to at least 468.3°C (Mitchell, 1983). In addition to being one of our earliest manufacturing and construction materials, ceramic products are among the earliest records of civilization. The enduring significance of ceramics is shown by the fact that, even today, the manufacture of whitewares, brick and related red-fired wares, refractories, and engineered ceramics continues to be a major sector of the US economy. A wide range of materials can be made into ceramic products, although relatively few earth materials make up most of the ceramics in today's markets (Table 1). Most ceramic products are made from clay or a related material. The long history of clay use in the ceramics industry stems from its variable and sometimes unique physical and chemical properties, as well as its ubiquitous occurrence and relatively low cost. Clay is important to ceramics because of its plasticity, moldability and filterability, chemical content, color. refractoriness, solubility. corrosion resistance, electrical properties, and other properties that result from the essentially two dimensional morphology of the individual clay mineral platelets. Because of their basic relationships to the chemical and physical properties of clays, the chemical and mineralogical content have been the subject of continuous studies over the past few decades. Advances in knowledge about the chemical, mineralogical, and physical properties of clays are responsible for most of the advances in processing. The need to remove off-colored contaminants, minerals with low melting points, and soluble salts has resulted in beneficiation by wet processing methods such as water washing. Water washing is restricted to kaolins, although low cost methods of water washing have been extended more recently to ball clays in Europe. High intensity magnetic filtration and flotation technologies have noticeably improved the quality of kaolins and broadly expanded their use in the ceramics industry. In addition to products for construction (e.g., brick, tile, sewer pipe, field drain pipe, cement, fiberglass, roof granules, and paint) and manufacturing (e.g., refractories, kiln furniture, sanitary ware, pottery, and dinnerware), clays are used in calcined form as ceramic fillers, carriers, extenders, and grogs. Ceramics suppliers are under economic pressure in several of these product areas. Manufacture of refractories in America has declined as steel production has decreased. In recent years, the crude oil reserves of the world have increased at the same rate as the consumption. A Consideration of the global figures suggests that adequate supplies of petroleum will be available during the next decades. On the other hand, it in a fast of economic and political significance that the reserves in the industrialized countries increase much more slowly than in the developing countries. In Western Europe the reserves have even decreased. At the present time, about 70 % of the petroleum reserves of the world are in the Middle East and in Africa in regions in which political arises are prevalent or impending. For the industrialized countries, the discrepancies between the consumption and reserves in various regions of the world are a strong urge to investigate whether oil can be recovered from other sources. The situation will probably not be changed to a large extent by the discovery of oil in the north of Alaska. The main starting materials for the production of synthetic crude oil are coal, oil shale and tar sand. In North America, where the consumption of petroleum increases more rapidly than the reserves, there are enormous deposits of each of the three materials. This fact is another incentive toward the utilization of these unconventional oil reserves, which provide a reliable basis for a supple of energy for a long time to come.

Biological processes for metal solubilization and ore beneficiation are in widespread use today. There are also some promising new applications of biotechnology in the areas of metal concentration and toxic metal cleanup. Recent progress in genetic engineering promises both to revolutionize the existing biological process and to expedite the adoption of the new biological applications. But before it can do so effectively, progress must be made in many areas of fundamental research and in biochemical engineering. These issues are addressed with special reference to the biotechnology of semi-enclosed containers (bioreactors), dumps, heaps, in situ and under- ground leaching, and with respect to the biotechnology of metal concentration. Finally, certain biological considerations for bacterial strain improvement are discussed.

A computer simulation of the automatic control of continuous mining machines has been prepared, similar to previous simulations of longwall mining systems and coal thickness sensors. The simulation allows for programmed variation of the horizon detection method, the azimuthal guidance system, the type and configuration of the miner, varying hardness in the unmined face material (leading to varying error in the machine heading), and the miner's cutting cycle. It simulates control of the miner in three axes. Use of the simulator makes it possible to anticipate problems arising from the complex character of underground mining, which include unpredictable multi-pass coupling and unpredictable variation in geological conditions.

The Lucerne Valley Operations of the Minerals, Pigments and Metals Division of Chas. Pfizer & Co., Inca, are located about 5 miles south of the town of Lucerne Valley, California. These operations consist of several limestone quarries, a whiting plant which produces finely pulverized limestone products, a-kiln which produces granular quicklime and lime products, and maintenance shops, warehousing, shipping, and office facilities. Construction of the Lucerne Valley plant began in 1961 as the result of a decision to utilize large undeveloped reserves of limestone in that area. Quarry development was started in the following year; and by 1965, Lucerne Valley had become the principle limestone and lime facility of the Western Operations of the Minerals, Pigments and Metals Division.
