"INTRODUCTION Longwall coal mining leaves large areas where the coal has been made removed and the roof rock strata collapse, forming a zone of broken rock rubble called the gob. Figure 1 shows a typical longwall gob area along with the gate roads. The ventilation pattern for progressively sealed longwall panels follows a simple “U” pattern where fresh air is coursed inby to the headgate, flows along the face and exhausts through the outby tailgate as shown in figure 1(a). An important variation of this pattern is the back return (BR) arrangement where the exhaust air from the face is drawn inby and around the nearest open cross cut before it turns in the outby direction towards the exhaust fan. Figure 1(b) illustrates the use of back return. This arrangement moves the point of low pressure from the tailgate corner up to 60 m inby and thus maintains fresh air in the tailgate region that could otherwise be contaminated with gob air.The gob area may contain remnants of unmined coal or parts of overlying coal beds that continue to release methane, eventually filling the gob area with methane in concentrations far above the explosive range of about 4.5 to 15%. Many gob areas must be equipped with gob ventilation boreholes (GVBs) to extract methane, and GVBs often exhaust methane at concentrations from 50% to 90% (Saki, 2016). Due to oxidation processes occurring in the gob, the oxygen content is reduced to a low level, with nitrogen and CO2 making up the major remaining components of the gob atmosphere. FORMATION OF EXPLOSIVE GAS ZONES IN GOBS Since the longwall face area is ventilated with fresh air below 1% methane and the face and gob areas are not separated, an explosive fringe will form where the methane content lies within the explosive range and oxygen content remains above 12%. Figure 2 shows a typical development of such an EGZ. This figure is based on a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model developed by CSM researchers to analyze gas concentrations and flow patterns in longwall mining. Figure 2(a) shows the formation of EGZ in the gob with a U type ventilation scheme, where EGZ lies right behind the shields in the tailgate corner. Figure 2(b) shows the formation of EGZ in the gob combining U type ventilation scheme with BR, where EGZ is pushed away from the face deep into the gob. The CFD modeling parameters and boundary conditions have been verified with field data from two cooperating, active longwall mines (see Worrall 2012, Marts 2015, Gilmore 2015 and Saki 2016). Other mine geometries, methane inflow rates and gob permeability distributions can be modeled to establish representative gob atmospheric conditions. Two GVBs were operating in the model, extracting 0.165 m3/sec each. The methane in the working areas and returns was kept below 1%. Methane flowing into the model from a rider coal bed above the mined seam was at the rate of 0.55 m3/sec."

The sulfur dioxide emitted in low concentrations in flue gases from the combustion of sulfur-containing coals and fuel oils is a significant factor in contamination of the atmosphere with sulfur dioxide. A review of methods for treating gases containing high concentrations of sulfur dioxide shows that they are seldom satisfactory for purifying flue gases. Processes developed specifically for treating flue gases using liquid absorbents are costly and may cause localized pollution, because the cooled flue gases can settle in the vicinity of the stack. Bench-scale research is being conducted to investigate the use of dry absorbents for sulfur dioxide removal at temperature levels of about 250°- 300° F. and 600°-650° F. Alkalized alumina has been found effective for treating simulated flue gas and Is regenerable by hydrogen, carbon monoxide, or producer gas. Other metallic oxides have been tested as absorbents also. Chemically impregnated activated carbons removed sulfur dioxide from the gas at 265° F. Vanadium pentoxide is effective as a catalyst for oxidizing of sulfur dioxide in the simulated flue gas at temperatures lower than have been used commercially for gases with higher concentrations of sulfur dioxide. Conversions of sulfur dioxide to trioxide wore studied as a function of temp- erature over a range of about 570° to 750° F.

Heap leaching provides a method of economically recovering gold from low grade ores with low capital and reasonable operating costs. As with conventional methods, alkaline cyanide solutions are used for leaching. Since gold (and silver) is (are) present as the native metals, oxygen (as air) is required to oxidatively complex the metals with the cyanide. Oxygen depletion can readily occur adversely affecting recovery. The addition of low levels of hydrogen peroxide during leaching can lead to significant increases in both rate of recovery and total recovery. This process allows for the use of shorter pad times or deeper heaps and increases the gold (silver) concentration to the recovery circuit and thus can reduce cyanide losses by virtue of permitting the use of less total leach solution per ton of ore processed.

Huge banks of preparation plant refuse and other non¬saleable materials have accumulated over the years in all major United States coal producing areas. These banks, esthetically and commercially undesirable, can cause air and water pollution and land reclamation and mineral conservation problems for the industry and nearby communities Although some refuse banks have been reworked to recover saleable coal, all remain and accumulation continues. Even those previously processed continue as potential hazards. Among the several problems created by refuse banks, in situ combustion is most treacherous. Of the millions of tons of major accumulations, there are at least 450 refuse banks on, fire at this time Attempts to extinguish such fires are costly, impractical and generally unfruitful. Studies are in progress to evaluate the potential of processing such materials to eliminate the combustion capability and to yield usable fuel and nonfuel products. Aspects of the study now in. development for coal refuse include: (a) evaluation of characteristics (size, sink-float, ash, sulfur and calorific value) of the coal refuse materials which are known to be highly variable, (b) development of an ignition test having significance for in situ conditions, (c) study of processing capabilities (comminution for liberation, pilot plant washing tests), and (d) investigation of potentially significant properties of fuel and nonfuel products which could be altered to enhance their market potential.. Among the latter products are lightweight aggregate, fill for mine slushing operations, construction, etc: Plans are to extend the studies to include the design, erection, and test processing of refuse with a transportable plant,; which could provide basic economic and product utilization data from several locations

In this chapter, a review is made of the various stages of an exploration program, mineral rights acquisition methods and the partners involved in an agreement, the after- tax cash flow approach using present value discounting principles, the establishment of computerized financial models for assistance during the negotiating stages for a mineral property, and the various evaluation techniques and their specific applications during different phases of an exploration program. A set of examples is shown encompassing the initial target-seeking stages to the ultimate feasibility study stage.

Though the use of continuous mining machines consolidated the operations of cutting, drilling, blasting, and loading in one machine that would theoretically provide uninterrupted production, it was soon realized that the face haulage and roof support operations remained as major impediments to continuous production. The ability to provide not only continuous cutting and loading, but also continuous haulage and roof support (see Fig. I), was the basis for the introduction of mechanized longwall systems in this country from Europe in 1951. The early systems employed friction props for roof support, but were to become obsolete shortly after introduction of the first hydraulically powered, self-advancing supports in 1960. Since then, use of the longwall technique has grown to the point where it is currently providing more than 5% of the annual output of underground coal mines in the United States. The shortwall system had its origin in Australia, but was first introduced into this country in 1962 following the development of powered roof supports. It, too, provides for continuous cutting, loading, and roof support (see Fig. 2), but has not experienced the widespread popularity of longwall due to its inherent inability to easily provide for continuous haulage. While there are in the neighborhood of 100 longwall systems currently in operation in this country, there are only a handful of short- wall operations providing production of slightly more than 907 184.7 t/a (1,000,000 stpy) Both of these systems provide uninterrupted roof support for face operations by means of hydraulically powered steel roof supports. In each case, the coal removal consists of open-end cuts made from the narrow end of a large rectangular pillar (panel) which has been blocked out by continuous miners developing entries around its perimeter. However, this is the extent of the similarities between the two systems. It is hoped [ ] that the information presented in this chapter will enable the reader to better understand the two mechanical systems and the mining concepts involved in their employment.

The US Bureau of Mines has designed and evaluated total mill ventilation systems (TMVS) at two mineral-processing operations. Both systems have proven proficient at cost-effectively reducing respirable dust levels throughout the mills. An 11.8-m3/sec (25,000-cfm) system installed at a clay-processing mill provided about 10 air changes per hour(acph). This system reduced respirable dust concentrations by about 40% throughout the mill building. The second evaluation was performed at a silica sand operation. Tests were performed with 23.6 and 47.2 m3/sec(50,000 and 100,000 cfm) of ventilation to the mill building, corresponding to 17 and 34 acph. Average mill-wide respirable dust reductions were 36% and 64%, respectively. This work was done to determine general guidelines and design criteria for operations that may be interested in implementing TMVS. TMVS should be designed to draw clean make-up air in near the base of the mill. This air provides general purging and may clear some dust-laden areas throughout the mill structure. It is discharged at or near the top of the structure. Without the TMVS, dust can exit the building through open doors, windows, etc. and contaminate outside plant workers. This dust can also be recirculated back into the mill building causing additional contamination problems. TMVS is not a stand-alone system. It is a supplemental technique to assist other localized dust control systems (Mody et al.,1987).

Recent research has demonstrated the utility of the FTIRIIRS adsorption density equation for in-situ study of surfactant adsorption phenomena at the surfaces of reactive internal reflection elements (IREs). The FTIR/IRS adsorption density equation is given by (formula) where r is the adsorption density, A/N is the absorbance per reflection, e is the integrated molar absorptivity, 4 is the bulk concentration of the surfactant, d. is the effective thickness, and dP is the depth of penetration. Previously, the validity of the adsorption density equation had been confirmed only from solution depletion measurements with high surface area powders. Now, FTIR/IRS studies of Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) monolayer films of fatty acid transferred to the surface of a calcium fluorite IRE .clearly validate the reliability of the FTIR/IRS adsorption density equation for quantitative analysis of surfactant adsorption. In addition, it was confirmed from the observed absorption band at 1550 cm-1 that the first monolayer of the transferred fatty acid chemisorbs at the surface of fluorite.

The microtunneling test program is one of three main elements of the research project, "Trenchless Construction: Evaluation of Methods and Materials to Install and Rehabilitate Underground Utilities." The other elements of this project include an evaluation and demonstration of horizontal directional drilling technology and pipeline rehabilitation systems. The research is a Corps and Industry cost-shared project funded under the Construction Productivity Advancement Research (CPAR) program. The laboratory partner is the U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station (WES), Geotechnical Laboratory. The industry partner is the Louisiana Tech University's Trenchless Technology Center. Industry participants are contributing over half the total cost of this research. The overall objective of the CPAR program is to improve productivity in the U.S. construction industry, thereby enhancing the competitiveness of the U.S. industry in domestic and overseas markets. The Corps and other federal and state agencies will benefit by realizing reduced costs, enhanced safety and better products and services as the products of this research program are developed, tested, and pushed into the market place. The microtunneling demonstrations and evaluations were performed during September and October 1992 at a specially constructed test facility built at WES in Vicksburg, MS. The test facility is 104 m (340-ft) long, 5 m (16-ft) wide, and 4 m (13-ft) deep. It was constructed, ironically, by first excavating a trench into which 6 different types of soils were placed and compacted in approximately 18.3 m (60-ft) long sections. The soil profiles include a lean silty clay (loess), a dry sand, highly plastic buckshot clay, wet sand, clay gravel and silt. The interfaces between soil profiles were sloped to simulate mixed face conditions as the machines exit one zone and enter another, and provided challenges to ground control and alignment and grade control during these transitions. Moisture and density tests were performed on all materials in each lift to assure uniformity. Horizontal inclinometers and 3 levels of settlement plates were installed at key locations in the test bed. The settlement plates and rods and the horizontal inclinometers, together with surface survey points, provided data to evaluate settlement and heave along the test section. Penetration resistance was measured in each section of the completed test bed. Strain gages were installed in 8 of the 0.6 m (24 in.) diam. Hobas pipe sections to measure strains in the pipe as it was being jacked into place. Steering jack loads, jacking thrust loads, and cutterhead torque were also measured during the drives. The results of these tests will be used together with other information to develop guidelines for conducting feasibility studies and selecting proper methods compatible with anticipated conditions.

Procedures for the determination of the operating point that results when a fan is connected to a mine and placed in operation have been a source of confusion for decades. A variety of techniques has been proposed, often to the detriment of the practicing ventilation engineer trying to apply the techniques to the multitudinous mine/fan matching problems encountered in the engineering of mine ventilation systems. This paper proposes some different assumptions and definitions that simplify the solution of problems in determining the operating point. As a result, a set of procedures is provided for determining the operating point of a mine/fan system when the outlet areas of the mine and fan are known. To establish a major simplification in the development of procedures for the determination of the operating point for a mine/fan combination, the authors suggest that the mine pressures be redefined and then used in such a manner that the conservation of energy is ensured. This provides the basis for the recommendation that the fan operating point be determined using the fan total pressure and the system total pressure characteristics. This procedure can be applied to fans in the blower, booster, and exhaust positions equally well and to both single-fan and multiple-fan networks. Another advantage is that the method is applicable to fans with or without an evase.

The opportunity for an exploration geologist to follow a successful exploration project through the feasibility, financing, construction, development, and exploitation phase is rare. In addition, it is not often that the exploration geologist can be present during the mining of a deposit to explain why certain actions were taken or interpretations made, and to find out how these interpretations turned out in actuality. At the Woodsreef chrysotile asbestos mine in New South Wales, Australia, mining has been- in progress for seven years and the writer of this chapter has been intimately associated with the project during the five years of exploration and seven years of exploitation. The Woodsreef mine has had major production problems, the majority of which have stemmed from the unique characteristics of the ore body and fiber. Because of the latter feature, much research has been undertaken by Woods- reef and other scientific organizations in Australia, England, and Canada regarding the Woodsreef fiber. The answers to some of the problems have negated some accepted concepts of asbestos ore milling and led to the development of new techniques. Some of these new techniques include the adoption of microscopic fiber counts as a routine procedure, the modification of accepted evaluation procedures, the development of new machines for dedusting fibers, and the recognition of a fiber with a unique milling behavior pattern and, possibly, properties. The problems experienced can be broadly divided into those associated with the geology and the physical properties of the fiber. It is possible that the same features may manifest themselves in other deposits around the world, and if they can be recognized during the exploration stages, a feasiblity evaluation may be just a little closer to the actual. The Woodsreef chrysotile asbestos deposit (latitude 30°24' S, longitude 150°44' E) is located 80 km north of Tamworth, NSW, Australia. The mine has been in production for six years and has a present scheduled mining rate of 33.11 Mt/y. An eight rock line mill treats an average of 7000 t/day, after beneficiation, and yields fiber grades in the range of group 4 to group 6 with some floats. The estimated re- serves of 30.56 Mt, with an ore to waste ratio of 1:3.0, are contained in two main zones that are designated the North and South zones. Mining started in the South Zone in 1972 and then, be- cause of the higher ore value, moved to the North Zone in 1975. Presently, there are two distinct open cuts referred to as the South and North pits that will eventually be worked together. The Woodsreef mine is owned by Woodsreef Mines Ltd. and is operated by Chrysotile Corp. of Australia Pty. Ltd., and is one of only two producing asbestos mines in Australia. The second mine is at Baryulgil, (latitude 29°13' S, longitude 152°37' E), and is operated by a subsidiary of Woodsreef Mines Ltd. This operation produces about 500 t/y for a captive market. An exploration program is being conducted in the area surrounding this small producer with a significant degree of success. The concepts developed during the exploitation of the Woodsreef deposit are being incorporated in the evaluation of the Baryulgil area, and if the Baryulgil deposit proves to be eco- nomic it is hoped that this approach will eliminate some of the major crises that have beset the production at Woodsreef during the first four years of operation. Introduction Laboratory studies were carried out at West Virginia University to investigate the rock-fragmentation mechanism of continuous miners using an automated rotary cutting simulator. The primary factors influencing the fragmentation process were found to be bit spacing, bit geometry, depth of cut and cutting-drum rotational speed. This paper presents a discussion of the effects of these parameters in achieving optimum energy consumption and minimizing dust generation during rock fragmentation. The removal of rock ridges/walls between adjacent grooves is analyzed with three hits mounted simultaneously on the cutting head, while the bit tip angle was varied from 600 to 900. Bit spacing was varied from 25.4 to 50.8 mm (1 to 2 in.) while the cutting process was assessed for varying cutting depths. Respirable dusts generated during the course of the experiments were analyzed utilizing cascade impactors. Assessment of these parameters has led to a better understanding of the cutting mechanism of continuous miners in terms of energy consumption and dust generation. A review of the literature revealed that a considerable amount of research has been carried out on rockcutting processes. Many authors agree that the mechanical cutting efficiencies of mining machines (e.g., continuous miners, shearers and road headers) are affected by a host of parameters. Some of these parameters are machine controlled, some are operator controlled, while others are uncontrollable. Efforts were focused on understanding the influence of parameters such as bit spacing, cutting depth, attack angle, bit type, drum speed, bit geometry (i.e., tip size, shape and tip angle) and rock type on the cutting process efficiency in terms of specific energy consumption and respirable dust generation (Strehig?? et al., 1975, Hanson et al., 1979, Khair et al., 1989). Roepke et al. (1976) in an attempt to study the dust and energy generated during coal cutting using point attack bits found that the dust and the specific energy consumed both decrease as the depth of cut increases. The four fundamental stages of dust generation luring rock fragmentation are identified by Zipf and Bieniawski (1989). Coal breakage by various types of wedges was assessed by Evans and Pomeroy (1966) in an extensive experimental study on British coals. Yet the industry today requires further attention and guidance to optimize the energy consumption and dust generation during the rockbreakage process. This paper attempts to give a better understanding of the influence of some of the parameters listed above and focuses on further improvement in the rock-cutting process. The specific energy consumed for different types of bits used and the respirable dust generated are analyzed in the context of the variation of a few other parameters. Laboratory investigation The experiments were performed in the Rock Mechanics Laboratories located at West Virginia University. A rock-cutting simulator designed and fabricated by Khair (1984) was utilized for this purpose. The details of this machine are available in the literature (see Khair 1984). For this study, a series of preliminary experiments was carried out to determine the optimum cutting frame advance speed. This was intended to facilitate a maximum cut depth of 31.75 mm (1.25 in.) at an advance rate of 0.525 mm/s (0.0207 ips) for all types of bits being used and various bit spacings being considered. To look into the cutting-process efficiency of a continuous miner in the laboratory, several parameters of influence are being considered. Besides the bit-geometry parameters, machine- and operator-controlled parameters, such as spacing of bits on the cutting head, the cutting head rotational speed and the total cutting depth during an experiment, are varied. At the time this paper was written, only part of the completed experiments were ana¬lyzed, and a number of experiments were still being carried out following an orthogonal fractional factorial experimental plan to assess the effect of all of the above¬mentioned parameters on the cutting efficiency in terms of energy consumption and dust generation. Back analysis is a very important procedure for proper understanding of physical processes. Back analysis can be used to establish the role of different factors, define parameters to be calculated and formulate the behavior of natural or physical processes based on field experimental results. It is evident that, in order to obtain the necessary data for back analysis, field observations are required. For the Michailovsky region (Kursk Magnetic Anomaly, KMA) the long-term strength characteristics of the clay covering the quarry slopes were established with the help of back landslide calculations. The obtained data allowed quantification of the shearing resistance parameters at the presence or absence of intermittent dips of discharge in the pit bank massif structures. Based on the results of investigation for material composition, strength and deformation of finely dispersed (clay-chalk) deposits in the Kursk Magnetic Anomaly including measuring of the settlements of filled structures, complex probing and laboratory determination of water-physical and mechanical properties of "man-made" soils, engineering-geological zoning of filled structures was carried out.

The E1 Indio Mine is located in the Andes mountains about 180 kilometers East of La Serena, capital of the Fourth Region of Chile. It is reached by an international highway running up the Elqui Valley as far as Juntas from where the last 42 kilometers is on a road constructed by the Company. The plant is located at 3.900 meters above sea level among extremely rugged terrain with nearby mountains rising about 5.500 meters. Climatic conditions at these altitudes are severe with winter temperatures down to -20°C. Snow storms lasting several days and leaving up to two meters of snow have been experienced, while fierce winds are corm=.

Two types of airflow splitting methods for improving longwall dust control were investigated by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health's Pittsburgh Research Laboratory. Investigated were a translucent mesh barrier and a staged spray barrier system to confine the shearer-generated dust to the coal-extraction side of the longwall face while maintaining a cleaner split of airflow on the opposing worker walkway side of the longwall face. In laboratory experiments and in a longwall field evaluation, the translucent mesh barrier was shown to provide notable dust-control effectiveness for a distance of up to 60 m downstream of the shearer, provided that the mesh barrier remained relatively parallel to the airflow. The staged spray barrier system showed marginal dust-control effectiveness in the laboratory and, therefore, was not field tested.

INTRODUCTION Kennecott Copper Corp.'s Tintic Div. Burgin mine is a 725 t/d (800 stpd) lead-zinc producer, located in the east Tintic mining district, 5.6 km (3.5 miles) east of Eureka, and 130 km (80 miles) south of Salt Lake City, UT. The Burgin mining complex includes three shafts, shop, dry, and office facilities, and a 454 t/d (500 stpd) flotation concentrator. Production and ser¬vice entry to the mine is through a 4.26-m (14-ft) diam concrete-lined production shaft, and a three-compart¬ment rectangular shaft. A connection with the Apex No. 2 shaft and the Burgin mine provides a second exhaust airway. Bear Creek Mining Co., Kennecott's exploration sub¬sidiary, began exploration of the Burgin mine area in 1957 with the sinking of the 335 m (1100 ft) deep No. 1 shaft. A station was cut at the 320-m (1050-ft) level of the shaft and extensive drifting, diamond drilling, and some winzing and raising confirmed the presence of a major lead-zinc ore body, the main portion of which oc¬curred below a hot saline water table. Surface facilities and the 4.26-m (14-ft) diam concrete-lined production shaft were completed in 1966. Ore production has been steadily increased to 725 t/ d (800 stpd) since 1966. The collar elevation of the No. 2 production shaft is 1731 m (5678 ft) above sea level. The mine's three levels, the 1050, 1200, and 1300 are at elevations of 1414.6, 1356.4, and 1338.1 m (4587, 4450, and 4390 ft), respectively. The approximate elevation of the hot saline water table is 1382.6 m (4536 ft). The earliest production on the east Tintic mining district was from the Eureka Lilly mine in 1909. Later, in 1916, the Tintic Standard mine was discovered, and pro¬duced ores with a gross value of $80,000,000 through 1956. The Eureka Standard mine located 1.6 km (1 mile) southwest of the Burgin mine produced ore worth $12,000,000 from fissures in the Tintic quartzite along the Eureka Standard fault. Ores produced from the east Tintic mining district through 1971 are valued at $151.3 million. The production from the entire Tintic district is approximately $500 million. GEOLOGY The Burgin ore deposit occurs as replacement bodies in limestone, dolomite, and shale. Numerous fault struc¬tures and rock formations make the mine geology com¬plex. The mineralization is strongly associated with sev¬eral major geological features, which include the Ophir formation, consisting of limestone, dolomite, and shale as the favorable host rock, and the structural influence of the east Tintic thrust, the Eureka Standard and sev¬eral other significant faults. Fig. 1 depicts the Burgin 1300 level workings, a generalized configuration of the ore body, and the main geological features. Covering the quartzite, limestone, dolomite, and shale facies enclosing the Burgin ore deposit are 183 to 274 m (600 to 900 ft) of andesite. The Burgin ore consists of massive sulfide and oxide lead-zinc ores with significant silver and cadmium val¬ues. The main ore minerals are galena, cerrusite, and spalerite. Choosing a mining method for an underground orebody is a complicated and often iterative process. Advances in technology have given design teams an array of possibilities for methods and equip¬ment. Hecla Mining's discovery of the deep Gold Hunter ore body challenged the staff at the Lucky Friday Mine to determine the optimum mining method. Taking an ore body from prospect to production requires traditional resource characterization. This includes drilling, delineating and modeling. Developing the mining plan is an evolving process, changing with each new piece of in¬formation as the project progresses through exploration and development. The Gold Hunter deposit is a steeply dipping vein system in the Wallace Formation of Idaho's Coeur d'Alene mining district. Gold Hunter is a misleading name for the ore body. The vein is a silver-rich, lead-zinc deposit with only traces of gold. The Gold Hunter ore body is located about 1.6 km (1 mile) north to northeast of Mullan, ID. The ore body is mined from the Lucky Friday Mine, located 0.4 km (0.25 miles) east of Mullan. Mining began on the vein from an access drift driven from the Lucky Friday Mine's 4900 level. Production from the ore zone is projected to be 771 t/d (850 stpd). The Gold Hunter ore is combined with Lucky Friday ore and milled in the Lucky Friday mill. The combined ore boosted Lucky Friday's 1998 silver production from 62.2 t/a (2 million oz/year) to more than 124.4 t/a (4 million oz/year).

In 1962, while investigating the tungsten potential in the Thompson Creek area for Union Carbide Corp., Henry T. Eyrich obtained anomalous concentrations of molybdenum (up to 19 ppm Mo) from stream sediment samples collected along Pat Hughes Creek, a tributary to Thompson Creek. Follow-up investigations by Eyrich during the same year disclosed the presence of a hydrothermally altered and molybdenite-bearing granitic exposure in the headwaters of Pat Hughes Creek about 2.4 km (1.5 miles) upstream from the sample point. The altered outcrop measured about 549 by 305 m (1800 by 1000 ft), contained abundant northwest-trending quartz veins locally with molybdenite, and was overlain and surrounded by the Challis volcanic extrusive sequence of mid-Tertiary age. Eyrich's subsequent soil and rock chip geochemical sampling program over the altered outcrop area showed a general increase in the molybdenum content to the northwest toward the postmineral Challis volcanic cover. Over a distance of about 305 m (1000 ft), values in the altered intrusive rock increased from less than 5 ppm Mo to over 600 ppm Mo, with aconcomitant intensity of the hydrothermal alteration pattern. Based on these geochemical results and on preliminar; megascopic hydrothermal alteration studies, Eyrich correctly concluded that the altered outcrop is an erosional window and that molybdenum mineralization of sufficient grade could exist beneath the Challis volcanic cover some distance further to the northwest. His recommendation to test the area of potential molybdenum mineralization with several drill holes was, however, declined by Union Carbide in 1962. The property remained unclaimed until 1967, when Eyrich joined Cyprus Mines Corp. Acting on Eyrich's recommendation, Cyprus immediately staked 26 lode mining claims to cover not only the altered intrusive outcrop, but also the northwest trend of mineralization where it projected beneath Challis volcanic rocks. Eleven of these claims are now patented.

Classification of rock and coal is one preliminary problem for fully automated or intelligent mining. It assists in automated rib stability analysis and enables the shearer to adjust the drums without human intervention. This paper studies the classification of rock from coal on rib images using machine learning techniques. A database of rock and coal images was created by filtering photographs taken by NIOSH researchers during site visits. Machine learning was conducted on patches, smaller images randomly extracted from each rock or coal image. After training, the classifier was validated with the testing dataset and achieved an accuracy score of 0.9.
