Significant lost time delays were experienced by Carbonifera de Nueva Rosita, S.A. de C.V. ("CNR") during mining development of the Pasta de Conchos Mine ("the Mine") near Nueva Rosita, Coahuila, Mexico. Furthermore, methane gas concentration in the return air course had exceeded 1.0 percent. Resource Enterprises, Inc. ("REI") was contracted by CNR to recommend an approach to reduce methane emissions at the Mine. In order to recommend a degasification approach, REI and CNR obtained geologic and reservoir characteristics of the Double coal seam, Olmos Formation. A vertical core hole was drilled to obtain core samples to determine gas content (average 8.4 cm3/gm) and to conduct a slug test to estimate permeability (34 md). This information was used to simulate gas productivity and drainage effectiveness. The simulation indicated that underground horizontal boreholes would remove significant quantities of gas in advance of mining in a reasonable period of time. Based on the results of the simulation study, an underground degasification drilling program was initiated at the Mine. In a six month period, five long in-mine degasification boreholes were drilled in advance of CNR's three to five years mining projections. Peak gas production from the five boreholes (approximately 2,750 cumulative meters) had exceeded 45,000 m3/D. Results to date have indicated a general reduction in methane concentration in the return air course below 0.8 percent.

The dissolution behavior of silver and copper from silver/copper alloys in ammoniacal solutions was investigated using a rotating disc. Oxygen was used as an oxidant. The effects of the alloy composition, concentration of lixiviants, stirring speed and temperature on the overall dissolution kinetics were studied. Three silver/copper alloys (containing 76.7, 46.9 and 24.1% silver) were used in this study. The rates of dissolution for these alloys were compared to that of pure silver and copper under the same testing conditions. Emphasis was given to the galvanic effect on the overall dissolution rates.

Nearly 30 estimates of the minimum earth stress were obtained from hydraulic stimulation tests in 5 boreholes at depths varying from 0.6 to 4.3 km in jointed granitic rock near the Valles Caldera in New Mexico. This site is located within the transition between the Colorado Plateau and Basin and Range provinces. Stresses were determined from open hole hydraulic fracturing experiments conducted with water at pressures up to 48.3 MPa (surface). The virgin bottomhol e temperatures ranged up to 327°C. Pressure records show no evidence of rock breakdown, indicating injection into pre-existing joints. A typical pressure response consists of an early wellbore storage period followed by linear fracture flow, which then evolves into a steady pressure, fracture extension mode. Shut-in behavior is characterized by a sharp pressure drop followed by a more gradual decay. The minimum earth stress shows a general linear trend with depth, increasing with a gradient of 19 MPa/km. A low stress anomaly occurs from 2490 to 3100 m where the minimum stresses are as much as 28 MPa lower.

Column flotation continues to make inroads into applications traditionally dominated by mechanical flotation cells. For example, columns are becoming more visible as rougher flotation devices. At Royal Mountain King Mine in California, two 2.9 m (9.5 ft) diameter columns are used for rougher flotation of carbon from a gold ore (Orlich et al, 1992). In addition, work performed at BRGM in France demonstrated the superiority of column flotation over mechanical flotation with respect to design of new plants (Morizot et al, 1991). With the mounting evidence, columns can succeed in any flotation application. The primary reasons for this acceptance of columns are a general improvement in design, scale-up and operation as well as improvements in sparger design and performance. With these advances, the full benefits of column flotation can be realized. The benefits of properly designed, aerated and operated flotation columns include: ? Lower Capital Costs ? In order to safely construct a ventilation and escape shaft through saturated overburden into an operating mine, artificial ground freezing and raise boring were combined for the first time on a project in the U.S.A. at Georgia-Pacific's Kentwood Mine in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Previous to drilling a pilot hole 206 feet deep into the mine, a 20 foot diameter cylinder of soil 140 feet deep was totally frozen. Before termination of the freezing operation, the pilot hole was reamed to 9 foot diameter and a 7 foot inside diameter hydrostatic steel liner was grouted in place.

The aggregates industry is the largest minerals industry in the United States producing over 2.6 billion metric tons of crushed stone, sand and gravel annually. Approximately 5% of that production is fine material, passing a 75-micron mesh sieve. Of that amount, about 77% is not sold and represents one of the major industry issues. The material accumulates in stockpiles and settling ponds having an operational and economic impact on the site’s bottom line. Many factors cause this material to be produced: from blasting and processing techniques all the way to end use specifications.

This paper presents some of the results of a rock mechanics in¬strumentation program designed for, and implemented at, longwall panel 4N at the York Canyon Mine near Raton, New Mexico. The objective of this particular instrumentation program was to determine the response of the rock mass to longwall mining of a thick coal seam utilizing shield-type supports. Measurements were made in the rock along the ground surface, above the coal seam, in the coal seam and immediately below the coal seam. Longwall test panel 411 had a total developed length of 762 m (2500 ft) and a face width of 168 m (550 ft). The seam mining height in the panel area was approximately 3 m (10 ft). The average depth of overburden above the panel is 107 m (350 ft) al¬though it ranges from 73-134 m (240 - 440 ft). Roof support at the face was provided by Hemscheidt shields. These shield-type supports weigh 11.4 metric tons each.

The Bureau of Mines investigated selective extraction of Au and Ag from a low-grade Au ore containing Hg. Gold and silver were extracted from the ore in cyanide slurries, and Hg extraction was suppressed with sodium or calcium sulfide. Maximum Au extraction and minimum Hg extraction were obtained using solutions containing 0.34 lb NaCN/ton of solution. Increasing the cyanide concentration increased Hg extraction without increasing Au extraction. Mercury extraction from the ore was suppressed with 0-5 to 2.9 Pb CaS/lb Kg in the ore. Gold-to-mercury ratios of 100:1 to 400:1 were obtained in the leach solution, and on the activated carbon in a CIP circuit.

As the search for new sources of energy and minerals leads to more remote areas of the country - and the world - the need to plan for adequate housing and community facilities for the construction and operations workforces and their families takes on an importance equal to the mining and processing facilities themselves. A corollary to the need for planning is the increasingly crucial need for development companies to devise effective strategies for dealing with the local communities impacted by these projects. Experience has amply demonstrated the high price to be paid for failure to learn this lesson, a price measured in lost productivity, confrontation with local communities, labor turnover, mental health and other social and eocnomic problems. In Sweetwater, Wyoming, a new industrial activity caused the population to double from 18,000 to 36,000 between 1970 and 1974. During that period industrial productivity fell 25 to 40 percent, cost overruns on the principal new industrial facility exceeded 33 percent, annual employee turnover rates climbed above 100 percent, the local mental health clinic workload increased nine times and complaints to the local law enforcement agency increased 60 percent.

P.T. Freeport Indonesia's latest expansion has increased total mill throughput to 125,000 dry metric tonnes per day. The most recent expansion included the installation of a Semi Autogenous Mill designed to treat more ore than any other single SAG mill currently operating in the world. Also included in the expansion were two large ball mills, rougher and cleaner flotation including conventional and column cells and a regrind circuit. All equipment is supported by a modem distributed control system. This paper describes the design considerations, construction, commissioning and start-up of the SAG concentrator and support facilities and includes an overview of the oreflow and milling facilities.

Basic laboratory tests initiated the. Rock Mechanics program. The stress-strain curve, modulus of elasticity, Poisson's ratio, the uniaxial rock strengths, Mohr's envelope, the stress at failure, and creep were investigated. A series of underground problems were then approached using this information; and various field measuring devices, most of which were developed by the Bureau of Mines. Initially, stress concentrations near mine openings were evaluated using the stress relief technique. This required an accurate determination of the pre-mining stress field. Later, stress concentrations associated with the cave line .sere studied. After about thirty stress reliefs over an appropriate time interval the effects of one type of mining could be compared against another. The microseismic technique was used to investigate a possible application of warning devices near the cave line. A study of mane reorientation was made Problems related to the shape and size of pillars and barriers were studied. Partial extraction mining systems were evaluated. The effectiveness of roof bolting patterns were examined. Control of roof stresses was attempted. A new system of mining in heavy ground has been developed using the information secured in the Rock Mechanics program without this system, mining in more than one instance would Nave been next to impossible. Indeed; from this one discovery alone, the Rock Mechanics program has paid off in improved safety as well as in dollars.

Diesel powered underground mining equipment is presently the most productive, safest and efficient equipment used in underground mining operations. The widespread application of this equipment to underground mining is restricted, however, largely because of the difficulty of controlling the diesel engine exhaust emissions. This paper briefly examines control devices currently available for underground application, and also discusses the theory and mechanics of controlling diesel missions with particulate traps and filters.

Ontario, one of the richest mining districts in the world, is a natural storehouse for much of the earth's fresh water supply. Covering over 344,000 square miles, the surface of this Canadian Province is dotted with 250,000 fresh water lakes and is laced with uncounted thousands of fresh water rivers and streams. The southern portion of the Province, for the most part, is flat or lazily rolling farmland. This is where most of the people in Ontario live. Although it is not a major mining area, southern Ontario does possess important deposits of salt, oil, gas and gypsum. Most of these deposits are being actively worked. Toronto, the capital city of Ontario, lies deep in the southern region. Here the climate is mild and the winters are short. The total annual precipitation consists of 27 inches of rain and 65 inches of snow. Most of the major mining companies that do business in Canada have made Toronto their Canadian headquarters. There are two reasons for this. The first, of course, is money. Toronto is the gathering place of many well- known financial institutions. The second is access. Toronto lies within a few hundred miles of some of the most spectacular mining enterprises that exist in the world.

"For the Hollywood International Airport Runway Expansion Project at Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the structural fire durability analysis was completed for a series of tunnels formed by roadway and railroad cells located under the runway structure. A systematic design approach was developed to mitigate structural damage during a fire event and arrive at a practical method to structural fire engineering that is compliant to NFPA 502. To ensure the NFPA 502 requirements are satisfied, the performance based approach was implemented and the engineering analyses were performed for the adopted design fire event. The analyses considered the facility’s unique features including its fire safety systems to determine applicable design fire curves for structural durability analyses. The paper also outlines the process of defining the project specific fire curves for a specific design fire scenario and summarizes the results of heat transfer and structural fire durability analyses. This approach was aimed to assist the owner and Authority Having Jurisdiction to achieve practical decisions to the tunnel facility fireproofing.INTRODUCTIONFort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport (FLL) in Broward County, Florida is a major hub facility serving more than 23 million passengers annually. As part of the Airport Expansion Program, the South Runway (9R-27L) Expansion project aimed to meet ever increasing service demands via an increase to runway lengths. This necessitated the placement of one of the reconstructed runways on bridge structures over the existing U.S. Route 1 (US 1), a major north–south U.S. Highway that serves the East Coast of the United States, and the Florida East Coast (FEC) Railway, thus effectively creating multiple tunnel cells beneath the subject runway. For this project, HNTB suggested a tunnel fire damage mitigation system that would protect the runway major structural elements from the design fire event that may happen within the tunnel cells. This paper addresses the issues related to the fire event originating within the tunnel encompassing the US1 highway only, and deals with requirements of NFPA 502 [5] exclusively. Therefore, while approaching the structural fire protection issues for the specific tunnel cells beneath the runway structure, the requirements of the American National Standard NFPA 502 (Standard for Road Tunnels, Bridges, and Other Limited Access Highways, 2008 edition) were followed. A test of retrievable geologic storage of spent fuel assemblies from an operating commercial nuclear reactor is underway at the Nevada Test Site (NTS) of the U.S. Department of Energy his generic test is located 420 m below the surface in the Climax granitic stock. Eleven canisters of spent fuel approximately 2.5 years out of reactor core (about 1.6 kW/canister thermal output) were emplaced in a storage drift along with 6 electrical simulator canisters. Two adjacent drifts contain electrical heaters, which are operated to simulate within the test array the thermal field of a large repository. Fuel was loaded during April-May 1980 and initial results of the test will be presented.

Abstract - This paper examines the ventilation network problem from a view point of solving a system of B equations in B unknowns, where B is the number o f branches in the network. Based on Kirchhoff s current and voltage laws, the solution to the general ventilation network problem must satisfy B network equations. In this paper, the air quantities and control-device pressures are chosen as variables and are grouped into B dependent variables (unknowns) and B independent variables, resulting in a system of B equations in B unknowns. Based on whether their variables are dependent or independent, the network branches are classified into f our types: five d, non-fixed, p-fixed, and q fixed. The ventilation network problem may include all four types of branches. There are .some conditions under which the problem as defined in this manner does not have a unique solution. To have a unique solution, the Jocabian matrix of the equations m us! he nonsingular. It then follows that: • the number of branches with independent air quantities must be less than or equal to the number of chords with respect to a spanning tree; •the subnetwork of branches with independent air quantities must not contain any cutset; and •the suhnetwork of branches with dependent control-device pressures must not contain any cutset. These three conditions must be met regardless of the values for the variables. In addition to the problem formulation, a solution procedure applying the Newton (or Newton-Raphson) method is outlined and illustrated with an example problem.

It is calculated that since the beginning of last century, which practically coincides with the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, our civilization has consumed around 239.5 million tons of copper (see: Table 1). According to the most pessimistic projections of today, with only a 2.5% annual growth rate in demand, we are bound until the end of this century to consume another 200 million tons of copper in remaining 17 years. A recent study made by US Bureau of Mines (1) indicates that the proven ore reserves of 150 major operating mines and about 120 deposits sufficiently explored for development and feasibility studies accumulate a total mass of 49.3 billion tons of ore, assaying an average of 0.82% Cu and containing around 324 million tons of recoverable copper. Consequently, there is a high grade of probability that the bulk of our future ore supplies, for our demand of, say, next 25 years will cane precisely from these mines. The interesting point in USBM study is that it indicates the recoverable byproduct content of these ores and which is: 118.2 million troy ounces of gold 2277.4 million troy ounces of silver 7.1 million tons of lead 24.7 million tons of zinc 1.3 million tons of nickel 3.1 million tons of molybdenum 765 thousand tons of cobalt, and 720 thousand troy ounces of platinum. This information gives us a relatively reliable profile of our future ores for next 25 years, and thus makes possible evaluation of byproduct credits in our future copper mining and producing activities.

INTRODUCTION In Canada, radium-226 is removed from uranium mining and milling effluents by the addition of barium chloride to precipitate barium-radium sulphate. Large settling ponds are provided to effect solid-liquid separation. However, the barium-radium sulphate precipitate [(Ba,Ra)S04] is a fine, slow-settling crystalline solid which is not easily removed by simple sedimentation systems. Consequently, settling pond effluents may contain appreciable quantities of particulate or suspended radium-226, depending upon the specific pond system and/or the time of year considered. Also, current technology is expected to be incompatible with ultimate disposal goals since safe recovery of the barium-radium sulphate sludge from the settling ponds may be difficult to achieve (IAEA, 1976). Under the auspices of Environment Canada, a Government-Industry Mining Task Force established a Radioactivity Sub-Group in 1974 to assist in the development of effluent regulations and guidelines for the uranium mining industry. Among the recommendations of the Sub-Group was the need to seek more effective methods of radium removal, including development of physical--chemical treatment systems as an alternative to settling ponds. In response to the Sub-Group recommendations, a bench scale feasibility study began in March 1976 at the Wastewater Technology Centre (WTC) of Environment Canada. The bench scale work was expanded and accelerated in 1977 with financial assistance provided by the Atomic Energy Control Board. The results of this study indicated that coagulation and flocculation of the (Ba,Ra)S04 precipitate greatly increased settling rates (Wilkinson and Cohen, 1977). Subsequently, a research program with a larger scope was initiated in January 1978; this program is jointly managed and funded by government and industry as indicated in Table 1. The principal goal of the Joint Government-Industry Program is the development of a physical-chemical process to reduce the radium-226 content of uranium mining and milling effluents. The following effluent radium-226 activities were established as targets for the program: 0.37 Bq/L (10 pCi/L) as total radium-226; 0.11 Bq/L (3 pCi/L) as dissolved radium-226.
