The release of fluid inclusions has a strong potential for the unintentional activation of pyrite during flotation. The present study aims to characterize fluid inclusions in a natural pure pyrite. The results indicate that a certain amount of fluid inclusions exist in the pyrite. The fluid inclusions assume a variety of shapes, including long strips, oval shapes and irregular shapes, with sizes that range from a few microns to dozens of microns. From the EDS results of hollow positions that resulted from the fracture of the fluid inclusions on the pyrite surface, certain amounts of Al, Cr, C, O, Ag and Cu were clearly detected; these elements were not detected in FeS2 pyrite itself. The contents of the inclusions were released into solution when the sample was subjected to a grinding process. Under experimental conditions of 2 g of pyrite cleaned in 40 mL of pure deionized water under an inert atmosphere, the concentrations of Cu, Fe, Cl- and SO4 2- released from the inclusions reached concentrations of 3.29 × 10-6, 32.52 × 10-6, 51.57 × 10-6 and 75.90 × 10-6 mol/L, respectively. These values are significantly greater than those from the experimental nonoxidative and oxidative dissolution of the pyrite. The fluid inclusions of pyrite were, therefore, concluded to represent the dominant sources of Cu, Fe, Cl- and SO4 2- in the aqueous solution. The present investigation provides a new understanding of the source of the unavoidable metal ions in the pulp and may benefit understanding of the flotation theory and environmental geochemistry.

INTRODUCTION Investigations of radon and radon daughter concentrations in Swedish [non-uranium] mines started in the late 1960's. The first screening measurements showed that the average annual exposure to radon and radon daughter products was 4.7 WLM. The main reason for high radon and radon daughter concentrations was inefficient ventilation and radonrich water entering the mine. In the radon regulations worked out later it was stated that no miner should be exposed to more than 60 000 pCi h/1 equilibrium equivalent concentration of radon annual exposure, corresponding to 3.6 WLM. Now, 1981 the situation has changed considerably. From the average annual exposure of 4.7 WLM in 1970 it is now only 0.7 WLM. Sweden has up to now had only one [uranium] mine and the work there has only been investigative. However, there are plans for a commercial uranium mine in another part of Sweden. The radon problems in these mines are widely different depending on the mineralogy. NON-URANIUM MINES The radiation problems in Swedish mines were not recognised until the late 60's. The first radon and radon daughter measurements were made in some sulphide ore mines in 1967 (1). The radon and radon daughter concentrations were surprisingly high for non-uranium mines. In order to have a complete picture of the radon situation in Swedish mines the National Institute of Radiation Protection (NIRP) decided to make measurements in all, at that time about 60 mines (2). To get results as fast as possible measurements on radon gas seemed most appropriate to start with. Sampling was made by mailing a number of evacuated 4.8 litre conventional propane containers from NIRP to each mine. The containers were then opened at the place of interest. After sampling the containers were sealed and then mailed back to the institute for measurement. The measurements were made in ionization chambers. This method only gave the radon concentration and the radon daughter concentration was estimated by multiplying the radon concentration by an assumed equilibrium factor. The equilibrium factor is defined as the ratio of the total potential alpha energy for the given daughter concentration to the total potential alpha energy of the daughters if they are in equilibrium with the given radon concentration. The results of this first preliminary survey indicated that a great many of the Swedish miners probably had an annual radon daughter exposure of more than 3.6 WLM. As the radiation exposure in non-uranium mines was not regulated in either the Swedish Radiation Protection Act or the Swedish Labour Protection Act work was started on special radon regulations. A lung cancer mortality study was also started. To check the results of the first survey and to get experience and knowledge of radon problems in mines, it was decided that personnel from the NIRP should visit each mine for a detailed investigation of radon and radon daughter concentrations starting with the ones with the highest radon concentrations. The main reasons for these so-called "basic measurements" were: 1. To estimate the doses received by Swedish miners 2. To find the sources of the high radon and radon daughter concentrations 3. To find appropriate counter-measures 4. To determine the most typical equilibrium factor for each mine. Unlike most uranium mines the reason for high radon concentrations in non-uranium mines is seldom the occurrence of highly radioactive minerals. The main sources were found to be waste-rock and radon-rich water. In order to filter and warm up the inlet air, especially in winter time, it was very common at that time to suck the air through broken wasterock. By doing so the air was contaminated with radon from the waste-rock and radon-rich water in it. It is noteworthy that the radium and uranium concentration in the waste-rock is relatively low. The uranium concentration is only of the order of 15 - 20 ppm. The action to prevent this contamination of the inlet air was to change the direction of the ventilation and in the case of radon-rich water entering the mine the action was to prevent the air coming into contact with the water. The first calculation of the radon daughter exposure of Swedish miners was based on radon gas measurements. The radon daughter concentration was estimated by using an assumed equilibrium factor of 0.5. Later when the mines were visited by institute staff it was possible to compare the assumed equilibrium factor with the measured ones. It was found that the factor varied from 0.15 at the air inlet to 1.0 at the air outlet and the average equilibrium factor on workplaces for almost all mines was between 0.4 and 0.6. The result of the exposure calculation in 1970 showed that more than 40 % of the miners had an annual radon daughter exposure of more than 3.6 WLM. Knowledge of in situ stress and natural fracture distribution at depth improves our ability to stimulate and produce low permeability reservoirs. The focus of this study is three closely spaced, 2.5 km deep vertical wells in the Piceance Basin of Colorado. The wells were completed through the tight lenticular and blanket gas sands of the Mesaverde Group. In situ stress directions and magnitudes were determined from hydraulic fracture tests and anelastic strain recovery measurements of oriented core. The distribution, orientation, and characteristics of natural fractures in the subsurface were determined from detailed observations of over 1300 m of core, of which 400 m was oriented. Stress measurements clearly show that horizontal stresses are strongly influenced by lithology. In a sandstone/shale sequence at a depth of about 2.0 km in situ stresses in sandstone formations are anisotropic, with the average ratios of the minimum and maximum horizontal stresses to the overburden stress being 0.82 and 0.96, respectively. In sharp contrast bounding shale formations are lithostatic. This stress contrast between sandstones and bounding shale formations could act as a barrier to hydraulic fracture propagation during stimulation and impede vertical fracture growth. Natural calcite-filled fractures are present in over 7 percent of the core, with several horizons having a much higher frequency of fractures. Fractures are found primarily in sandstone. The fractures have a strong preferred orientation of N 1060E[+]110, which is aligned with the maximum horizontal stress and direction of hydraulic fracture propagation. The interaction between a well developed fracture fabric and anisotropic stresses in sandstone formations produces a permeability anisotropy, with the maximum permeability aligned with the fracture fabric and maximum horizontal stress.

The chlorination behaviors of pure iron and manganese oxides were investigated by combining a thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) technique with batch-boat roasting followed by leaching. Ferrous and manganeus oxides could be chlorinated readily, but, in the absence of a reductant, the higher oxides of both iron and manganese were difficult to chlorinate. Thermogravimetric analysis curves were drawn to illustrate the complexitites of the reactions, and the possible mechanisms were discussed. Then three manganiferous materials from the Cuyuna Range of Minnesota were treated by a process involving the selective chlorination of manganese followed by leaching. The results were interpreted in the light of the chlorination mechanisms observed on the pure iron and manganese oxides.

The evolution of open-pit mining has been rapid during the last two decades. The development of larger, more productive and efficient equipment has been one of the key factors in this open-pit advancement. Selection of the proper equipment and its correct usage is paramount to successful operation while maximizing return on investment. The quantity of material being moved prior to mining the saleable product is increasing at a significant rate. For example, at a southwestern copper mine more than two hundred million tons of over- burden have been removed prior to exposing an ore which contains less than 1% copper. A recent survey of twenty-three Western Hemisphere copper mines reveals the average strippingratio was 2.2:l with a range of 0.9-8.5:l. In the face of increased mineral demand, the resulting technological developments and rising overburden to ore ratios, many open-pit mines now use totally different concepts for the removal of ore and overburden. An increasing number of these concepts now being installed include wheel tractor scrapers as a major part of the material handling system for unconsolidated overburden removal. To say scrapers move only unconsolidated overburden is incorrect. On the contrary, ripped phosphate rock, copper ore, iron ore, and moderately consolidated overburden are also being moved by scrapers in various areas of the world. As reported in the Minerals Year- book, however, about one-half of the material moved in metal and non-metal mines is never drilled and blasted or broken by other means. We will, therefore, in this paper, concentrate on the role of wheel tractor scrapers in unconsolidated overburden; the area of greatest usage.

The Bullfrog and Montgomery-Shoshone deposits, outside Beatty, Nevada, have a combined drill-indicated reserve of 17.4 M tons of ore with an average grade of 0.103 oz/t Au and 0.240 oz/t Ag. The deposits occur in Miocene volcanic rocks which underwent large-scale movement within a detachment-faulted terrane. The principal host to gold mineralization is a strongly welded rhyolitic tuff which experienced brittle deformation during plate movement. Open-space fractures and breccia were filled with quartz, calcite, and adularia accompanied by lesser pyrite, gold, and acanthite. Gold occurs as micron-sized particles within and adjacent to the low-angle fault and along associated listric-normal and tear faults.

High-calcium limestone has been intermittently produced from the Monarch quarry since the late 1800s. Initial production was used in sugar processing and for a smelter located near Salida, Colorado. During the 1920s, Colorado Fuel and Iron Company (CF&I) began to exploit the deposit as a source of flux stone for its blast furnace steel operations at Pueblo. The deposit was operated for many years as a captive quarry by CF&I. In 1984, CF&I closed the quarrying operations at Monarch; flux stone was no longer required since the blast furnaces were taken off line in 198 1. In 1994, Colorado Lime Company, a subsidiary of United States Lime and Minerals, Inc. acquired the property. Limestone was mined from the Castle Butte Member of the Leadville Limestone (Lower Missippian). Some high- magnesium dolomite was also mined during WWII from the Redcliff Dolomite Member which directly underlies the Castle Butte. Past production was from both an upper and lower quarry at elevations ranging from 10,000 to 11,000 feet (3,048 m-3,353 m) mean sea level (m.s.1.). The reserves at Monarch quarry are in a dip slope deposit, occupying the northwest slope of Monarch Hill. The structural geology of the deposit is complex on both a region- al and mine scale. The reserves are located on the eastern limb of the Syncline Hill syncline. The beds on this limb of the structure strike to the northeast and dip to the northwest from 30 to 45 degrees. A major reverse fault separates the reserves into an upper and lower deposit. Numerous smaller normal and reverse faults cut the deposit, requiring a flexible mine plan. At the Monarch quarry, the Castle Butte Member con- sists of two stratigraphic units. The Upper unit (Mlu) is a thick-bedded, fine-grained crystalline dolomitic limestone from 0 to 300 feet (0-90 m) thick. The unit generally has an Si02 content of less than 4 percent. A bedded chert horizon and a karst horizon at the base of the unit locally raise the Si02 content as high as 20 percent. The underlying Quarry Stone unit (Mlq) is a light-gray, massive, bedded, calcilutite/micrite limestone from 90 to 130 feet (27-40 m) thick. The Quarry Stone unit is remarkably uniform chemically throughout it's entire thickness. Average analysis is CaC03 - 95 percent, MgC03 - 3.5 percent, and Si02 - 0.5 percent. The Footwall dolomite unit (Mld) of the Redcliff Member of the Leadville Limestone is a dark gray to black, blocky, medium-to-thick-bedded, calcilutite/micrite dolomite from 150 to 180 feet thick (46-55 m). The upper 100 feet (30 m) of the unit is a low-silica facies with an average Si02 content of less than 0.5 percent. MgC03 content is con- sistent at 39.8 percent throughout the upper 50 feet (15 m) of the unit but varies from 15 percent to 39.8 percent in the lower portion (50 to 100 feet [15-30 m]) of the low-silica facies. The lowest portion of the unit, 100 feet (30 m) to base of unit is high in silica and is not considered chemical grade. Current in-place, surface-minable reserves at the quarry are estimated to be 14 million short tons (st) (13 million metric tons [mt]) of limestone and 50 million st (45 million mt) of dolomite. A 1.4 million st (1.3 million mt) stockpile of finely crushed limestone is also present on the property. Colorado Lime is presently processing approximately 2,000 st (1,800 mt) per month from the crushed limestone stockpile. This material is pulverized and sold to underground coal mines for use as rock dust, some of this product is also used for environmental purposes. Limestone mining is scheduled to resume in spring of 2000.

Although beryllium was initially discovered in 1797, it was not until 1916 that the first significant quantity of beryllium metal ingot was produced in the United States. Before 1940, most of the small quantity of beryllium metal used in the United States was supplied by Germany. Beryllium was not used in its metallic form; it was used as an alloying addition to other metals, mainly copper and nickel. World consumption of beryllium at that time was estimated to be a few hundred kilograms annually. Because of increased tensions in Europe before World War II, imports of metal from Germany ceased in 1940, and domestic production was required to meet the needs of the military. As a result, by 1946, the United States became the principal supplier of beryllium products for the world, a condition that prevails today. Because of beryllium's high strength, light weight, and high thermal conductivity, it has been used in a large number of industrial and defense applications as a metal, alloy, and oxide. The United States is the only country other than China and the former USSR currently producing beryllium products from beryllium ores and concentrates. Bertrandite, mined in Utah, is the principal ore source of domestically produced products. Imported ore, mainly from Brazil, supplements domestic ore supplies. Production and consumption data for the United States is shown in [Figs. 1 and 2]. Production data for 1969-1979 is withheld to avoid disclosing company proprietary data.

On Feb. 16, 2012, the Polish coal mining company Lubelski Wegiel Bogdanka S.A. set the world record for daily production from a plow-equipped longwall, with an output of 24.4 kt (26,900 st) of coal from a single face. The company commissioned the first Cat longwall system at its Bogdanka Mine, near Lublin in eastern Poland, in March 2010 and within six months had raised the bar to nearly 17 kt/d (18,700 stpd) of cut coal. Since then, Bogdanka has continued to increase its daily output with a plow face that began mining in the new 7/VII/385 panel last October, taking the world record to new levels. In addition to the record output achievement, the plow face advanced more than 27 m (89 ft) at a 1.63-m- (5.3-ft-) cutting height. ?We thought this achievement would be impossible for any shearer in seam heights as low as this,? said Zbigniew Stopa, vice president of Bogdanka.

Although cyanidation has been universally applied in the processing of gold and silver ores, the search for less toxic alternatives continues. Difficulties encountered in processing ores containing oxidized copper minerals and the inherently slow kinetics of cyanidation have generated a renewed interest in thiosulfate leaching. This process, as well as the catalytic effects of copper ion, were well recognized and widely applied towards the end of the past century. In this study, the effects of copper, ammonia, and thiosulfate concentrations on gold dissolution were investigated using the rotating disk technique. Extraction of gold and silver from an oxidized copper-bearing ore was also studied utilizing a statistical experimental design, and these results were displayed in the form of contour plots.

"SJVN Limited successfully commissioned its Rampur HEP (412 MW) in 2014. The project has been planned to operate in tandem by directly utilizing the Tail Water of SJVN’s prestigious Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station 1500 MW located upstream. The initial filling of voluminous water conductor system of RHEP with 10.50 m diameter, 15 Kilometer long Head Race Tunnel, involved more than 1.5 million m3 of water. The filling operation of such a large diameter tunnel constructed in young folded Himalayas which always offer less ideal sites for tunnelling and their subsequent operations under pressurized conditions is worth sharing with tunnelling fraternity. The paper covers meticulous planning, execution, precautions taken, and performance monitoring during filling process keeping in view the fragile geology, low rock cover zones, shear zones in close vicinity of thickly inhabited areas, squeezing zones, hot water zones encountered during excavation.1.0 RAMPUR HYDRO POWER STATION IN BRIEFRampur Hydroelectric Project (412 MW), is located in Himachal Pradesh (India). This project is a downstream development of Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station (1500 MW) constructed on river Satluj and commissioned during 2003. Both the projects today are now successfully working in tandem. The upstream NJHPS has been constructed on the left bank of the river while the downstream Rampur HPS is located on right bank of the river (Figure-1).The major length of HRT of Rampur project lies on right bank of river before it crosses under the river in its initial reach (Figure-2). The main features of the project are as below:• 10.50 m diameter 15 km long HRT ending in a 155.75 m deep, 38.00 m diameter surge shaft.• 3 steel lined pressure shafts, 5.4 m dia, 211-220m long.• Surface valve house 69 m long x 10.50 m wide x 23 m high housing 3 No. butterfly valves• 3 No. surface penstocks 5.4m dia 368-382m long, bifurcating into six penstocks, each of 3.80 mdia. to feed six generating units of surface power house 158 m long x 24.50 m wide x 48 m high, with Francis turbines each of 68.67 MW capacity."

The widespread and increasing use of electrical power for mechanized power has made a tremendous impact on the coal mining industry. It is probably the single most important factor influencing the productivity of a coal mine. In fact, as a part of a study of 62 coal mines in Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia, plus information that was obtained from other sources, it was possible to show a direct correlation between the rise in the use of electrical power and mine productivity, Figure 1. This increased power demand has not always been achieved through proper planning and a careful evaluation of all design parameters, many of which are not even recognized. The result has been increasing problems in power distribution and utilization establishing the need for scientific studies including considerable underground measurements. Because the cost of power for ton of coal produced is generally a relatively low value, inadequate attention is paid its distribution and utilization. Furthermore, a poor system of records and a lack of adequate measurements add further to a paucity of statistical evidence that would permit a rational analysis of overall power costs. However, the direct cost figure alone is highly deceptive; of much greater value is the indirect costs associated with the use (or misuse) of electrical power underground. Success in highly mechanized mining correlates directly with equipment utilization. Today's machines have tremendous potential capacities but profits are measured in terms of performance and not potential. Thus the reliability of electric motors is an extremely important factor for consideration and the effects of all parameters should be carefully evaluated. Thus while studies are continuing on the evaluation of primary and secondary mine electrical systems with interesting results, this paper will be limited to reporting on the results of a study of a specific motor application.

The disposal of the phosphate slimes produced by Florida beneficiation operations is perhaps the biggest single problem of the phosphate mining industry. This is an old problem which has not been solved and which is becoming increasingly severe. In a typical phosphate mining operation, the phosphate rock mined is initmately mixed with sand and clay, constituting what is known as matrix. During the beneficiation, the clay and other fine materials are separated usually at -150 mesh, and washed from the phosphate rock in a form of diluted slurry known as phosphate slimes. The quantity of slimes solids and their composition vary considerably with the location but usually represent from 25 to 35% of the ore mined. Because of the affinity that clays have for water, large volumes of water are required to separate the granular material in the matrix forming a dilute slime suspension (1.5 to 3% solids) of colloidal material, which settles very slowly, and thus requires immense impounding areas, which never becomes totally usable land. ABOUT BENTONITE TUNNELLING Much has been written and many learned papers given on this subject whose generic term is Slurry Tunnelling. This paper is about the particular form of slurry tunnelling known as the Bentonite Tunnelling System. This method. of tunnelling was invented by J.V. Bartlett of consulting engineers, Mott Hay and Anderson in 1964. The general principles are incorporated in British Patent No. 1083322. It was not until the early 1970's that serious experimental work was started to prove the technical feasibility of the process. In the U.K. in 1971 Edmund Nuttall Limited started on an experimental length of 3.8m diameter tunnel at New Cross in London. In Germany at about the same time Wayss and Freytag were starting on a 3.7m diameter collector sewer tunnel in Hamburg. In Japan early slurry tunnelling work was carried out in the 1960's. In the early 1970's a large number of slurry tunnels of various diameters were carried out in that country. This paper is being presented at a time when this system of tunnelling has become an accepted method throughout the developed world. As a result of the work carried out so far there is now a large amount of data existing regarding the effects on the ground in the immediate area of the tunnel, settlement at the surface and the ability of the system to cope with ground varying from clays to coarse gravels and containing large erratics such as granite boulders. The flocculation of -38 pm calcite, hematite and kaolinite aqueous suspensions by the yeast Candida parapsilosis and products derived from rupture of the microorganism was studied. Flocculation of hematite suspensions by the microorganism and its derivatives readily takes place between pH 2.8 and 11.4. Maximum flocculation occurs at about pH 6.5. Flocculation of calcite suspensions by the microorganism and its derivatives readily takes place between pH 7.0 and 11.8. Maximum flocculation occurs at about pH 10.0. Flocculation of kaolinite suspensions was less than that for the other two minerals. However, a soluble fraction derived from the rupture of the organism functioned as a good flocculant for the mineral, albeit at an increased concentration, between pH 2.6 and 11.5. Maximum flocculation occurs between pH 6.8 and 7.2. An attempt is made to relate the behavior of the various systems to the surface characteristics of the minerals and the surface and chemical properties of microorganism and its derivatives. Experimentation used to evaluate the flocculation includes actual flocculation tests, microelectrophoresis measurements and scanning electron microscopy.

The 29th annual American Mining Hall of Fame Awards Banquet and Fundraiser sponsored by the Mining Foundation of the Southwest (MFSW) will be held at the JW Marriott Star Pass Resort, Tucson, AZ on Saturday, Dec. 3, 2011. Each year, one living inductee, two recipients of Medals of Merit, and up to five honorees from mining history are chosen by the MFSW for their outstanding contributions to the mining industry. Chilean Minister of Public Works and former Minister of Mining, Laurence Golborne Riveros will be the guest of honor, featured speaker and inductee into the American Mining Hall of Fame. Golborne Riveros was instrumental in managing the rescue of the 33 Chilean miners in October 2010 and in the coordination/management of the ?townsite? for family members, rescue support and the media. His engineering background and executive management skills made him ideally suited to assist in both a technical and managerial role in this emergency.

It is advisable, for any heap leach project, to develop an historical metallurgical data base to predict production heap performance before ore is mined and placed onto the heap. A data base would include results from: interval assays, cyanide solubility tests, and bottle roll tests on exploration drill cuttings samples; and those results plus column leach test data on diamond drill core or bulk ore composites. Subsequent larger scale heap leach test data can then be compared to the historical data base, to blast hole composite data during mining, and eventually to production data. This paper does not discuss metallurgical comparisons between assays, cyanide solubility tests, and bottle roll tests on exploration drill cuttings samples, but does discuss metallurgical comparisons from bottle roll tests, laboratory scale column leach tests, and pilot scale heap leach tests on core and bulk ore samples with operating data for three U.S. commercially producing heap leach operations. Provided that representative core or bulk samples are used for evaluation, heap leach test results accurately predict or understate the success of the commercial operation and remove most of the uncertainty from the investment decision.

An analysis was conducted to determine the effects of blasting on slope stability and downstream comminution processes. To investigate these effects, the extent of blast-induced rock damage and the magnitude of induced stress were examined. This analysis showed that damage may extend up to 500 m (1 MPa, tensile strength) into the rock mass, a distance that is sufficient to have an impact on the pitscale slope over the long term. In addition, the damage zone was calculated using the assumption that compressive waves are the primary agent in microfracturing during blast fragmentation. The calculated damage zone — up to 2.2 m (43 MPa, rock mass compressive strength) — indicates that microfracturing can occur throughout 20-50% of the entire rock mass in the blasting area, depending on the blast geometry, burden and spacing. Finally, an economic analysis was conducted by comparing two assumed blasts in a copper mine. The change in energy required for crushing and grinding was demonstrated using Bond’s law after increasing the blast energy from 180 kcal/t to 350 kcal/t. A total cost saving of 13.3% ($9.4M) was achieved with the increase. However, the benefits of blast-induced microfracturing must be balanced against the potential impacts to slope stability to ensure safe conditions, a top priority in mining operations.

The 1996 Arizona Conference was held in Tucson on Dec. 8 and 9. Attendance was 648, a 12% increase from the 1995 conference. The annual conference is organized by the Arizona Conference Board of Directors, representing SME sections from throughout Arizona and adjacent areas. In addition to those representing mining and processing operations in the Arizona region, the meeting was well attended by interested parties from throughout North America. These included vendors, consultants, academia, research organizations and corporate management. The technical program highlighted the meeting. It consisted of a keynote address and morning and afternoon technical sessions. In the technical sessions, 23 papers were presented by the mining, hydrometallurgical, smelting, geology and mineral-processing divisions. The conference was then capped by a banquet that included a talk by a noted economist. Keynote address The program was kicked off by a keynote address titled "Forecasting for the 105th Congress," by Rep. John Shadegg (R-AZ). He was elected to Arizona's Fourth Congressional District in 1994. Shadegg serves on the House Budget Committee, the Resources Committee and the watchdog Government Reform Committee. He stressed the familiar conservative positions of reducing government spending, balancing the budget and states rights. As a member of the House Resources Committee, Shadegg stated his support for the mining industry. Technical sessions Mining division. Two of the five presentations described developments at two Arizona mining operations. T.J. Swendseid of Phelps Dodge presented a paper titled "New developments at Morenci" and P. Garretson of BHP presented a paper titled "Startup of the Robinson Project." Morenci continues to expand its operation and recently broke records for production. Other developments at Morenci included the completion of a 600-m (2,000-ft) drainage tunnel and stockpile rehandling. In addition, Phelps Dodge moved Morenci's crusher plant. It was completely disassembled and reassembled in just eight days. Another interesting presentation was "Predictive maintenance techniques for large electric shovels at Cyprus Sierrita," presented by T. Ritzel of Cyprus Amax. The presentation described high-technology methods for predicting maintenance problems. These methods included vibration analysis, ultrasonic detection, infrared thermography, electrical measurements and tribology (the science of lubricant evaluation). The benefits of these techniques are reduced downtime of the equipment, as was demonstrated in case studies at the mine. The other presentations were "Introduction to NOSA 5-star safety program," by R. McKinnon, BHP Copper North America, and "A new design guideline for mine sealing," by K. Fuenkajorn, Rock Engineering International. Hydrometallurgical division. The hydrometallurgical session consisted of five papers. These included a presentation titled "Recovery of gold and silver using guanidine-based extractants," by M. Vining of Henkel Corp., Tucson, AZ. In this presentation, guanidine-based extractants LIX-79 and AURIX resin were introduced. LIX-79 was shown to have applications in copper-gold and high silver ores. In ammonia-cyanide leaching, AURIX was shown to be more selective in CIL vs. RIL comparisons. Other papers in the hydrometallurgical division included "Application of cobalt in the copper industry," by J. Hawke, OMG Apex Inc.; "Series parallel conversions and production gains at Cyprus Miami Mining's dump leach and solvent extraction operation," by E. Bilson of Cyprus Amax; "Lead alloy anode corrosion at the San Manuel SXEW tankhouse," by W .M. Gort of BHP Copper and "Hydrometallurgical treatment of copper refinery slimes," by B.C. Wesstrom of Phelps Dodge. Smelting division. Three papers were presented in the smelting division session. These included updates and reports on improvements at the Hayden, Hidalgo and BHP San Manuel smelters. For example, W.A. Dutton of Phelps Dodge presented "Recent improvements at the Hidalgo Smelter." These changes were aimed at reducing environmental emissions and increasing production. They included modifications to the fugitive-gas collection system to reduce particulate emissions, rubber lining the acid plant scrubbers to reduce corrosion and the installation of a cold lime softening system for water treatment. Equally interesting papers were presented by D. Norton of Asarco, Hayden, AZ, in a paper titled "Update of the Hayden smelter process," and by D. Jones of BHP Copper, San Manuel, AZ, in a paper titled "Update on first campaign of the BHP San Manuel Copper." Geology division. The session began with a paper that outlined the progress of an exploration project in South America. "The Pierina exploration project, Ancash Province, Peru" was presented by J.D. Lowell, Lowell Mineral Exploration, Rio Rico, AZ. Another paper was then presented on a copper deposit in Grant County, New Mexico. "Zonation of supergene copper minerals at Hanover Mountain, Grant

EMR Microwave has developed several unique processes for the pretreatment of refractory gold and copper ores. This report describes a recent large scale pilot project involving a carbonaceous gold-bearing whole ore. Pilot plant testwork conducted jointly by EMR and Bateman Engineering Inc. has shown that 90+% cyanide soluble gold recovery is obtainable from refractory (sulphide and carbonaceous) Carlin, Nevada gold ores. Typical cyanide soluble gold recoveries for untreated material is 20%. AC energy consumption was found to be between 58.l kWh/ton and 15.5 kWh/t for an assumed heat recovery of 50% and 80% respectively. The plant was operated at reduced temperatures ( 400°C) from previous testwork on similar ore at 600°-700°C.
