In a lagging economy where profits are tight, businesses cut costs. No revelation there. The mining industry, though, has always looked for ways to reduce production costs — no matter the state of the economy or commodity prices. The fact is, when planning a new mine or the expansion of an existing one, mining companies gamble that commodity prices will be reasonably high when a project comes onstream. It takes millions of dollars and several years to bring a mine into operation. And a lot can happen economically between the time management gives the go-ahead for a new project and its completion.

It is undisputed that an interaction between mine fires and mine ventilation systems exists. The ventilation carries the poisonous and sometimes explosive combustion products, which constitute the greatest danger of mine fires, through the mine and it provides the oxygen on which the intensity of the fire depends. The fire, on the other hand, can produce considerable ventilation disturbances which make it difficult to predict the path along which the combustion products travel. The opinions, how serious a threat such fire generated ventilation disturbances are, vary. Where shallow deposits are mined and brisk ventilation currents are used, it is frequently felt that these disturbances are of no serious concern. Where mine workings extend over larger elevation differences and where such disturbances have been encountered and been the cause of some larger disasters, their assessment is an integral part of all fire emergency plans. The author felt that the potential of digital computers for the design of ventilation emergency plans, contrary to their acceptance for conventional ventilation planning for more than two decades, is not yet fully utilized. He designed a program for the simulation of ventilation systems under emergency conditions in particular fires. As the mining industry moves further into developing countries in search of new resources, its role in international development is coming under increasing scrutiny. This is a trend that is likely to accelerate, along with the potential for headaches among managers in the industry. Public interest in development and environmental issues is rising as faith in “big business” falls. This has strengthened nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) campaigning for sustainable development. And it has put more pressure on banks, governments and development agencies to curb corporate misdemeanors. Developing world governments are also becoming emboldened to reject previously agreed terms they do not consider equitable. The mining industry has begun to formulate a response to these pressures but must go much further. Societal and environmental issues must move from public relations to core strategic thinking. Abiding by rules or codes is not a relevant response. Instead, genuine support for sustainable development is required. This will involve delegating the responsibility for engaging with local communities to on-the-ground staff and developing a dialogue with local stakeholders rather than conducting an initial assessment and disengaging.

The failure of a seal in an underground coal mine can have devastating consequences. Traditionally seals have been constructed as flat walls. Large hydraulic dams, on the other hand, are constructed as concave arches. This paper presents an initial analysis of the potential strengthening of seals by concave construction as well as the impact of additional cost in terms of labor and material. A simple finite element analysis of three-dimensional solids under uniform loading allows comparisons between the strength of a flat wall and a curved arch. The models are examined for reasonable behavior and displacements at 20, 50, 100, and 200 psi loads.

With all of the unknowns associated with tunnel construction, how does a contractor choose a roadheader? This paper presents a review of several models of roadheaders being used in today?s tunnel projects. The features of different models of roadheaders are presented and compared. Roadheader size and cutter power generally determine which roadheader is best for a particular job. We will also present a model for matching features of the roadheader to the anticipated ground conditions such that the most efficient machine is selected for the project.

In order to maintain higher grinding efficiency in tumbling mills the mill interior and dynamics must be known. For this purpose, several different types of non-intrusive methods have been proposed and are being tried in the industry. We have made an effort to develop a diagnostic tool based on vibration signal. Here we discus results of our experiments pertaining to ball as well as SAG mill. In each case, a triaxial accelerometer was used to capture mechanical vibration generated due to the tumbling action of the charge. The vibration signal was transmitted to a remotely placed computer and the signals were analyzed by standard signal processing technique. In case of a ball mill (5m diameter), qualitative mill information could be obtained by correlating the vibration signal to feed rate and mill filling. An effort was also made to identify different motion characteristic of the charge by analyzing its vibration signal. In case of the SAG mill (10m diameter), liner wear was estimated by comparing the vibration signal emitting out of a freshly lined mill with that of a worn out mill.

Energy efficiency has become significant due to cost and environmental considerations. Comminution and material handling have been identified as the two most energy intensive processes in mining. The objective of this work was to evaluate truck-shovel energy efficiency strategies using discrete event modeling. Energy audits and time and motion studies were conducted at a surface coal mine to acquire data. A discrete event simulation model of truck-shovel operations was built in Arena® and validated with the field data. The model was used to evaluate the effect of using a larger shovel, and optimizing truck-shovel matching on fuel efficiency. The results indicate that using a larger excavator increases the fuel efficiency of the operation while optimizing truck-shovel matching does not. However, using a larger shovel will lead to under-utilization of the shovel. This work shows the potential benefits of using discrete event simulation to model energy efficiency of mining operations.

Introduction Many old underground mines have been developed extensively into reserves requiring large numbers of workers to maintain and rehabilitate lengthy track haulages and/or belt conveyor systems. Often, large numbers of fans are required to maintain minimal airflows in areas where poor conditions and huge leakages prevail. Problems that beset one such coal mine and projects undertaken to restore it to potential profitability are presented. Brief history The Vesta No. 5 mine was opened in 1908. Drift development began near the Monongahela River, which was the primary avenue for shipping metallurgical coal to coke ovens in Pittsburgh. Over the ensuing 75 years, the main haulage entries were developed a distance of 16.1 km (10 miles) to the present mining area. Track haulage was used to transport coal from working sections to the river loading facility. As haulage distance and areas of high water influx increased, management decided, in 1973, to construct an underground conveyor belt system. The project spanned 36 months and culminated in a system of 22 flights, ranging from 205.7 to 1767.8 m (675 to 5800 ft) long. Six intake and eight return entries were developed as the mains were advanced. These entries provided adequate ventilating capacity over the years, but as extensive gob areas progressed and roof conditions deteriorated, the entries became inaccessible and more resistant to airflow. By 1981, five fans were being used to circulate 943.9 m3/s (555.5 cfm) of air through the mine. An average of 6440 t (7100 st) were produced from 20.8 continuous miner unit shifts and 2.7 longwall unit shifts each day in 1981. The ratio of support to production personnel was 1.94. To maintain the outby 16.1 km (10 miles) of haulage, 110 personnel were used. The average cost per ton was $43.54 ($39.58 per st), resulting in excessive bottom-line losses. The mine possessed a rather promising reserve, mostly in lease, of good quality, medium-sulfur metallurgical coal, but it also had a number of formidable operating problems. Operating problems Contributing factors toward relatively low productivity and high costs were the conditions of the track haulage, conveyor, and ventilation systems. Australia’s Minerals Tertiary Education Council (MTEC) has achieved several successes during its first three years of operation. This initiative was developed through the Minerals Council of Australia, in conjunction with three partner universities involved in mining engineering education. The partner universities are the University of New South Wales (UNSW); Curtin University, the West Australian School of Mines (WASM); and the University of Queensland (UQ). The collaboration between these partner universities and industry has led to the development of shared course material, cross-institutional teaching arrangements, and the development of a number of flexible, distance-based delivery programs. This article then discusses future initiatives. Importantly, the challenge is the future initiative planned to cement this collaboration by the formation of a “virtual” national school of mining engineering: Mining Education Australia (MEA). This will provide a common third and fourth year program to all three universities beginning in 2007. The common program will involve innovative teaching and learning arrangements, greater student exchange potential and a more significant input by industry into the education process.

SME’s Arizona Conference was held at the Doubletree Hotel at Reid Park in Tucson on Dec. 4 and 5, 2005. The annual conference is organized by the Arizona Conference Board of Directors, which represents SME sections in Arizona and adjacent areas. The conference provides an opportunity for individuals and corporations associated with mining in the region to get together once each year to discuss the status of the industry. Important topics discussed among the attendees included the price of copper, community relations and education.

METAFORA is a simulation model for determination and evaluation of strategies for operating loader/truck systems in mining. A specific version of METAFORA was used to evaluate the haulage system at Solider Mineral's Aitik mine in northern Sweden, one of the largest open pit mines in Europe with a production of about 11.5 Mtpy (about 34000 tpd) of copper are. A production level of 34065 tpd was estimated by simulation runs with METAFORA. Using METAFORA's dispatch rules (Fixed Dispatch, Maximize Trucks, and Maximize Loaders), the truck/shovel system in the Aitik mine was simulated for evaluating alternative dispatch control strategies. The Maximize Trucks rule gave about the same total production (ore + waste) as the Fixed Dispatch rule but a 9% higher ore production. The Maximize Loaders rule gave the lowest production. The marginal truck capacity decreases with increasing number of trucks serving the same loader due to increasing waiting times. In Aitik mine the low crusher capacity results in long dumping times. If the dumping time at the crusher could be halved, the ore production would increase by 14%. The paper indicates that the use of software like METAFORA can result in a substantial reduction of time, effort and cost in shovel/truck system design and evaluation.

Project Description The Ok Tedi Mine is located approximately 18 km east of the Papua and New Guinea-Indonesia border, on the southernmost extremity of the Star Mountains Range, it is situated almost equidistant from the north and south coastlines. The headwaters of the Fly River system are in the Star Mountains. The open pit mining activities are on Mt Fubilan with a (pre-mining) elevation of 2,095 metres (6,871 Feet) in the Western Province. The mine is in an area characterised by very steep topography and dense tropical rainforest. The pit has been free draining but will cease to be so in the first quarter of 2009. Ok Tedi Mining Limited (OTML) required a drainage tunnel to be driven under the mine, if possible before free drainage was no longer possible. The tunnel was required to be at least 5 m in diameter and 4,200 m (13,776 ft) long, with a possible extension of 1,100 m (3,608 Feet) if the mine decided it was required for additional drainage and underground exploration. The tunnel is being driven up grade at 0.67%, and will be connected to the pit by the raising boring of two 1.1 m (3 Ft. 6 In.) diameter shafts from the tunnel level 250 m (820 Feet) below to the pit. In Tabubil, the adjacent township at an elevation of 640 m (2,100 feet), air temperatures range from a mean at night of 20 (68°F) degrees centigrade to a daytime aver-age of 27 (81°F) degrees. Extremes of 12 and 39 (54°F?102°F) degrees centigrade have been recorded. Rain falls, on average, 339 days each year and totals 8,000 mm (315 inches), and have been known to approach 12,000 mm (472 inches) making the area one of the wettest places on earth. The portal site is at an elevation of 1,200 m or 4,000 ft and the air temperatures are a little cooler and the rainfall a little greater. Access to the mine is by air for personnel and light freight and by ship for heavier goods and materials. The port is at Kiunga on the Fly River 153 km from the portal site. The program for the project was tight, the decision to purchase the required TBM was made in July 2007 and the final decision to go ahead with the construction of the tunnel was made in November 2007.

An accurate estimation of mining block grades continues to be a challenging task for ore reserve practitioners. Two of the factors that affect the accuracy of the estimates are the estimation method used and the variability of the mineralization in the deposit. The objectives of the study are twofold: Firstly, to see how different estimation methods perform on a given deposit. Secondly, to determine the impact of particular nature of the mineralization on the results. The comparison of several estimation methods for the prediction accuracy is performed using the conditional simulation results as the basis.

The efficiency of a coal mine ventilation circuit is usually measured by the ratio of the sum of the face quantities divided by the quantity supplied by the fans. Other types of systems use the power delivered to the power supplied to measure efficiency. This paper argues the case that the current measure may be inadequate and that by also looking at the power ratio, ventilation may be better managed. Problems associated with failing ventilation systems would be highlighted earlier so that crisis management could be avoided.

Unlike the first predicted deep-sea mining (DSM) boom 35 years, the public response to the re-emergent possibility of DSM is this time round is not entirely optimistic, with serious economic, social, and environmental concerns being voiced. In the intervening years, the troubling notion of the ‘resource curse’ has been popularized, whereby the economies of developing nations rich in natural resources (agriculture, minerals, and fuels), paradoxically appear to fare more poorly than their brethren who have fewer such resources. There have been a variety of explanations and counter-arguments regarding why the resource curse occurs, including how it can be ‘escaped’, and even some disagreement on whether it in fact does occur. Nevertheless, many commentators appear to agree that that the quality of governance is strongly implicated in the socioeconomic success, or failure, of these resource-dependent nations, and could indeed be the deciding factor. Unlike nations with diversified economies, the majority of the income from natural resource economies, in the form of royalties and rents, flows through national government; hence, good governance and fiscal management is of particular concern.

Narrow vein mining, with enough challenge and also where the cutting edge technology can be applied, is still a very important and exciting portion of the mining industry. Based on the deposit characteristics, the most flexible mining method, cut and fill, has been being tested mining this high grade Northern Nevada property, Hollister, since the year of 2008. In the last three years, 254,000 tons of ore were hauled out of the portal and 23,000 feet of development were excavated underground with the winning of several safety and environmental awards. Together with mine geology, the essential segments include mining cycle, ground control, ventilation, grade control and backfill method in cut and fill stopes were covered in this paper.

Underground heat issues are mainly focused on the detrimental effects to a workers health. However, working in hot, humid conditions has other negative effects. Studies have shown that safety, productivity, workforce morale and operating cost are also worsened in these conditions. The human body has several mechanisms for rejecting heat and remaining cool. However, once the air temperature exceeds about 34°C, the only effective mechanism is by evaporation of sweat from the skin. This is assisted by acclimatisation which is the human body?s enhanced ability to combat extended exposure to heat. The body has to remain well hydrated when working in heat as even small degrees of dehydration cause significant decreases in the ability to work in heat. There are two ways in which heat load can be reduced: Through use of refrigeration/vent/cooling to reduce thermal stress on workers; Reduce the contribution that heat sources have to underground heat load (e.g. reduce idle time, fleet size, etc). Some of the sources of underground heat have the potential to be more manageable than others. Geothermal heat and heat from autocompression will be found in all mining situations in varying degrees depending on geothermal gradient and surface temperature, however, the use of equipment and blasting may be streamlined to reduce the underground heat load. It is through a combination of the available options that most mines will successfully control their heat related problems. Mt Isa, which has been a focus for heat related study in Australia, has successfully implemented protocols for working in heat. Through combining these with the installation of a surface bulk air cooling plant, Mt Isa has consistently reduced the incidence of heat illness. This is likely to be the most cost effective method of reducing heat load for deep mines in Australia. Shallower mines which may only occasionally encounter hot conditions should consider more portable cooling options. This study will review the heat issues in underground Australian metalliferous mines.

Increasing pressure from State and Federal agencies to mitigate mining-induced subsidence damage to overlying structures has presented a unique problem to the coal industry in the western United States. Because sandstone escarpments are an environmental issue, millions of tons of coal reserves that underlie these escarpments risk being classified as unminable by regulatory agencies. At this time, the effect of subsidence on escarpments has not been well documented or characterized. The Bureau of Mines is using numerical modeling techniques to analyze escarpment response to longwall mining. Two- and three-dimensional finite element models have been constructed for a study area near Price, Utah, where longwall panels were mined near an escarpment. This status report includes preliminary results showing that the pattern of subsidence surrounding the escarpment can be simulated through numerical modeling. Models that include such structural details as joint and fracture patterns will better simulate subsidence patterns .and magnitude. By locating longwall panels strategically in relation to the escarpment, stability may be preserved throughout the mining process. Numerical modeling provides a method to analyze relatively quickly the effects of longwall panel location and resulting subsidence on escarpment stability. The goal is to provide a relatively accurate predictive tool for mine planning to determine if escarpment stability can be maintained while maximizing extraction of the coal reserves.

Extraction and separation of La, Sm and Dy ions from acidic sulfate-phosphate solutions was investigated using a cation exchange extractant, bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl) phosphinic acid, CYANEX 272, in kerosene. The influence of shaking time, equilibrium pH, extractant, sulfate and phosphate ion concentrations, diluent type and temperature was studied. The extraction was found to be pH-dependent, and increasing the phosphate ion concentration inhibited the extraction which was found to be endothermic. The stoichiometry of the extracted metal species was found to be MOH.H2OHSO4H2A.A2. Aliphatic diluents were found to enhance the extraction compared to aromatic diluents. The results showed that there was a separation mode between the metal ions when varying the hydrogen ion and sulfate ion concentrations, under the used experimental conditions. The investigated process was used for the recovery of La, Sm and Dy from the acid solution resulting from the leaching of low-grade monazite.

Hydrochem Developments Ltd. has developed and put into full scale operation a novel type of vertical flotation column incorporating a multiplicity of mechanically agitated stages. Characteristics of this flotation column include a low height to diameter ratio, high upgrading factors and the possibility of modifying geometry and operation to specific flotation requirements. A commercial unit is currently handling up to 100 tpd rougher concentrate at Dickenson Mines Limited, Balmertown, Ontario. Design parameters and plant performance will be discussed.
