"Sustainability is a concept that involves several aspects like social, economy and environment. For the concept of sustainable mining is an action that involves to do more in social acceptance, distribution of welfare, an stable economy and the environment. Understanding the mining operation that creates a new state that is necessary to prepare and conduct searching for the best results in sustainability. The results of sustainable mining could be directed to achieve less net environmental impacts, more economic development through the transformation of the natural capital and the social acceptance as the result of good negotiations with the communities in the surroundings. To do that, one option is to create frameworks to planning the regional mining developments that allows the stakeholders to decide and develop different strategies to addresses the sustainability in a mining environment. Strategies based on the understanding of the whole mining business, the environment in which it operates, composed for a natural resources network that interact in a complex system, social system composed by different groups, communities and economies that could be subject to big transformations. INTRODUCTION The mining sector represents one of the most significant challenges for sustainable development, given the magnitude of the impacts that it has on the social and natural systems and the potential to generate welfare associated with its exploitation. Some of the main challenges of mining to contribute to sustainable development are the reduction of the environmental and social impacts of mining operations, to advance in the distribution of benefits in the community and the investing in the development of substitutes. To help in this direction it is necessary to integrate more actors than those who have been considered traditionally in the development of the mining business, and consider the natural environment, communities and the several dynamics generated by the interaction of these elements that contribute to sustainable development. This work provides some useful considerations for sustainable development of mining operations in regions with mining vocation, through the convergence of objectives and the finding of synergies between the existing conditions in the territories and the potential conditions that are generated by new mining developments. A DEFINITION FOR SUSTAINABILITY IN MINING The definition of the Brundtland Commission in 1987 established that sustainable development is ""the ability to ensure that it meets the needs of the present generations without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs""."

A systematic slope design for open-pit mines has become a reality only in recent years. Advances in the science of rock mechanics, coupled with extensive use of computers, have enabled the numerical solution of slope design problems which were not previously amenable to analytical or numerical solution. This slope stability study was performed for the UJV-SB open-pit uranium mine of the Getty Oil Co., located in the Shirley Basin area, Wyoming. The purpose of the study was to determine the appropriate slope angles for a starter pit. The data generated during the mining of the starter pit would test the initial design and suggest appropriate modification in the design for future mining in the project area. There had been a history of slope failures in the open-pit uranium mines in the area due to the low competency of the overburden materials and adverse hydrological conditions.

This article presents results from a comparative case study focusing on newspaper coverage of mineral exploration and mining in three European countries representing different geological and socioeconomic contexts. The results show that regional newspapers in Finland, Germany and Spain report about mining issues relatively intensively even in the absence of major accidents or other media events causing peaks of attention. The tone of the articles is generally neutral to positive toward mining activities. Common themes include mining revival, mining events and social interaction, history of mining, and damages related to mining. Past, present and future employment opportunities related directly or indirectly to the mining sector are key storylines. Contrary to some expectations, the regional-level debate was not dominated by a long-lasting confrontation between the mining industry and its adversaries spearheaded by environmental nongovernmental organizations.

To fulfill this commitment, we are working with the SME UNC Student Chapter team, Newmont Yanacocha, BRG Women and Allies and the Museo de Agua y Tierra (MAT) to carry out the “Building our future” project. This project seeks to instill in new generations the importance of mining, integrating sustainable development objectives. We have the participation of Newmont Yanacocha and external professionals, who share their life stories and inspire participants from rural and urban educational institutions to pursue their dreams and aspirations. We believe that this project is important because it will help new generations understand the importance of mining and its role in the development of the country, covering the economic, environmental and social spheres. Since its inception in 2022, the project has positively impacted more than 500 participants.

The Tanco pegmatite is located in the Bird River greenstone belt of south-eastern Manitoba approximately 160 km northeast of Winnipeg (Figure 1). The orebody was discovered in 1929 and subsequently attempts were made to exploit it for tin by Jack Nutt Mines Ltd. and later in the middle 1950's by Montgary Oil Ltd., who extensively developed but did not produce from its lithium deposits. In 1966 systematic investigation of the pegmatite as a potential source of tantalum led to the founding of Tantalum Mining Corporation of Canada Ltd. (TANCO), and production of tantalum concentrates from the Bernie Lake mine commenced in 1969. Tanco's currently jointly owned by Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., Cabot Corporation, and the Province of Manitoba.

Work that has culminated in the manufacture and testing of a old-selective resin on a pilot-plant scale is dcscribed. Following a brief discussion about the nature of commercially available resins which identifies them as poor candidates for a gold extraction application, the improved properties of the new type of resin are illustrated using results from comparative loading tests. Further results from continuous countercurrent extractions using synthetic leach liquors and elution work using thiourea as the eluant demonstrate the superiority of the new resin over commercial resins and hence, its potential for use in a resin-in-pulp process for gold.

Comingling filtered tailings and waste rock in a tailingsdominated mixture is a mine waste management strategy that has the potential to create geotechnically and geochemically stable landforms. Potentially acid-generating (PAG) waste rock can be sequestered within a filtered tailings matrix to enhance water retention and decrease hydraulic conductivity relative to a waste rock pile, potentially minimizing acid rock drainage (ARD). Enhanced water retention can reduce oxygen ingress limiting oxidation and resultant acid generation. Reduced hydraulic conductivity can slow inward percolation and outward drainage. In dry climates, the tailings matrix can hold precipitation near the ground surface accessible to evaporation and transpiration, thereby decreasing percolation. This paper presents an evaluation of comingled filtered tailings and waste rock in a tailings-dominated mixture (termed GeoWaste herein) and illustrates that ARD can be reduced under field conditions in a subtropical–highland climate.

INTRODUCTION Approximately six years ago the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) developed a data acquisition system (DAS) specifically designed for measuring radon levels and other environmental parameters during studies of means to control radiation hazards in underground uranium mines. The DAS system records data in machine readable form using a paper tape punch, which represented the state-of-the-art at that time for a moderate cost output device. However, the use of paper tape as a recording medium for field studies is somewhat unwieldy. Reducing the raw data required either that the tape be shipped to a computer center equipped with a high-speed paper tape reader or that the tape be transmitted at low speed over the telephone lines to a remote computer. Transmitting, at ten characters per second, the data from a 10-channel DAS taking Four readings per hour would require about 30 minutes For each 24-hour day's data. Telephone lines from remote mine sites are often of marginal quality and data errors can be introduced during transmission. Paper tape punches are also prone to occasional punching errors. Both problems make it necessary to carefully check for and correct data errors, a process which is possible because each DAS produces an independent printed data record, but the error checking and correction process can be quite laborious. Aware of recent advances in microcomputer technology which have brought the price of a personal computer down to about the cost of a paper tape punch 5-10 years ago, the Bureau decided to explore the feasibility of using a low-cost personal computer in the field to process DAS data in real time. On behalf of the Bureau, Arthur D. Little, Inc., developed a simple interface circuit which permits an Apple II computer to accept data from one or two DAS units as it is being transmitted to the paper tape punches. Computer software converts each measurement to appropriate engineering units, e.g., radon concentration, Working Levels, air velocity, temperature, or barometric pressure. The computer also calculates 1-hour and 8-hour running averages of all converted data and prints those results as soon as they are obtained on a line printer located at the test site for immediate inspection. After development, the system was used continuously and successfully for a 5-month period at a Utah uranium mine. DAS DESIGN AND MODIFICATION Each of the two USBM data acquisition systems used in this work consists of two separate modules. A multiplexer module located below ground near the measurement transducers acquires signals from each of nine tranducers. Six input channels were devoted to measurements of radon or Working Level. The outputs of those transducers, photomultiplier tubes or G-M tubes, respectively, are digital pulse trains which are accepted directly by the mutliplexer. Three channels were used for environmental parameters--air velocity, temperature, and/or barometric pressure. Each of the environmental tranducers is fitted with dedicated linearizing and voltage-to-frequency conversion circuitry so that the outputs to the multiplexer are also pulse trains having frequencies of one tenth of the value of the measured parameter expressed in the appropriate engineering units. A 100-Hz reference signal was input into the tenth channel for use in monitoring system integrity and performance. All ten pulse trains are then timeseries multiplexed into a signal line for transmission to the above-ground data acquisition module. Above ground, the composite signal is de-multiplexed into ten separate lines, each of which is connected to a digital counter which converts the pulse train to a numerical value. The acquisition of each set of readings is initiated by an adjustable "scan cycle comparator" timer. The acquisition process proceeds in three phases. First, radon and Working Level channels are counted for an extended period of time, typically 5-10 minutes depending on activity, because of the low pulse rates involved. Then the other four channels are counted for ten seconds, and finally, all ten readings, along with the Julian day and time of day are output serially onto paper tape and printed on a strip printer. When the scan cycle comparator reaches its preset time (15-minute cycle times were used in this work), it resets itself, initiates another readout cycle, and begins timing again. The only modification made to the data acquisition systems used in this work was to disconnect the scan cycle comparator in one unit, which became the "slave" and bring in the scan cycle comparator signal from the other unit, the "master", to initiate data acquisition cycles in the slave. Synchronizing the two data acquisitions in this fashion and using two slightly different radon counting times insured that the two systems never attempted to output data to the Apple II at the same time. THE APPLE II COMPUTER The Apple II computer used in this work was equipped with 48 KBytes of semiconductor random access memory (RAM), two floppy diskette drives, a Centronics Model 730 impact matrix printer and a modulator for driving an ordinary color television as a video display device. Controlling dust generation and keeping it below permissible limits to meet federal dust standards at the working face of a room-and-pillar coal mine is a challenge for a mine operator. With the recent changes in federal dust regulations requiring lower worker exposure, maintaining compliance has become increasingly difficult. The current most effective practice of dust control at a continuous miner face in an underground mine is the use of a flooded-bed scrubber. A study carried out by the U.S National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) indicated that a flooded-bed scrubber could achieve cleaning efficiencies between 58 and 90 percent. But the operation of such a system is maintenance intensive. The flooded-bed scrubber screen becomes clogged with dust particles and requires frequent cleaning to maintain performance. However, the dust control issue is not solely a mining-industry problem. Other industries face similar issues. The University of Kentucky collaborated with Toyota Motor Manufacturing on the development of a novel wet scrubber, called the vortecone scrubber, for capturing over-sprayed paint particles in automotive paint booths. The vortecone scrubber achieved a cleaning efficiency of 99 percent and required minimal maintenance. This study aims to assess the ability of this vortecone scrubber to capture respirable dust in an underground coal mine. The paper presents the results of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling of this vortecone scrubber. It discusses the effects of air quantity and dust particle size on the performance of the scrubber.

Data from many case histories reporting tunnel boring machine penetration rates in rock with unconfined compressive strengths greater than 70 MPa (10,000psi) are summarized. The case history data are useful for comparing estimated penetration rates with historic performance in similar rock types, particularly in granitic and metamorphic rocks. TBM exhibit higher penetration rates in sedimentary rocks than in granitic and metamorphic rocks. Data for the two groups of rocks are summarized separately.

Better understanding of the mechanisms and kinetics of dissolution can benefit several industrial processes. For example, iron can be leached from clays, which can be further used as a raw material in the ceramic industry. Another important application is the regeneration of ceramic filter media, which are used in the dewatering of iron ores. Dissolution of iron oxides in mixtures of acids is fairly uncommon and a less well-understood phenomenon, but it can result in a more efficient process. This work also shows that the determination of dissolution mechanisms and kinetics is not straightforward in different acid systems.

In this study, the conditions of raw materials and fuels were simulated for Bayan Obo iron ore concentrate by adding pure calcium fluoride (CaF2) in various concentrations to Australian iron ore. The mechanism by which the fluorine (F) content of the lattice influenced the reduction swelling properties of the iron ore briquettes during various stages of the reduction process was investigated. The results provide insight into the mechanism governing the reduction swelling process in Bayan Obo ore briquettes, which could be used to direct real?world production practices, particularly those related to the rational utilization of Bayan Obo ore resources.

Most prediction methods used to calculate mining-induced subsidence rely on empirical formulations, which typically assume flat topography and uniform properties in the overburden. It is also well known that when a longwall panel mines below a valley bottom surface ground deformation magnitudes and orientations may be significantly influenced by the presence of the valley. This paper discusses ground deformation data collected at different surface locations above the Buchanan mine in the eastern United States. Measurements at individual surface points and strata movement measurements using a three-point extensometer have been collected as the area was undermined. Measurements correspond to the mining of the panel immediately under the measurement points and to the mining of adjacent panels. Measurement locations correspond to valley bottom locations. The measurements are critically evaluated and compared with respect to topography and panel face location. The issue of the fluctuation of GPS measurements is also discussed.

Reliable prediction of dynamic deformations is important when planning to undermine important structures that cannot tolerate large relative deformations and or large horizontal strains. This paper presents examples of dynamic deformation profiles that include subsidence, horizontal displacements, and horizontal strain for a number of points over a retreating longwall panel in the eastern United States. The prediction points are located at different distances from the excavation rib and therefore present a different response in terms of dynamic movements. The formulation is based on the influence function method as implemented in the Surface Deformation Prediction System (SDPS). Results show that the subsidence development curve may be reliably predicted for surface points in the middle of the panel. However, in cases where points may be affected by the magnitude of the edge effect offset, subsidence predictions may be very conservative, that is, higher than actual movements.

Visiting Spring Canyon, a historic coal mining district near Helper, Utah, I was impressed by the great accomplishments that had taken place there. A tour book of the region tells of a period that began in the early 1900's, when the land was still very much the Old West, when settlers lived out their lives in coal company towns and produced a resource that was to build a nation (Cunningham, F., 1990). Between 1912 and the early 1970's, 11 mines had come and gone in that narrow canyon less than 15 kilometers long. Spring Canyon is a historic district now, but I could not dwell too long on the richness of its history. I was there to look for evidence of PCBs.

"1. INTRODUCTIONTunnel face stability is one of the most important consideration in New Austrian Tunneling Method. In general, if all of the material properties of ground can be obtained through the field investigations, the tunnel face behavior can be predicted using numerical simulation prior to tunnel construction. However, estimating the safety of a tunnel face is difficult, especially in cases where the ground is very weak such as in an urban area.In this study, numerical analyses of tunnel excavation in very weak ground conditions, such as a low cohesion and low internal friction angle, were carried out. The relationship between the average shear strain distribution on the tunnel face and the overburden was analyzed. This relationship estimates the shear strain of the tunnel face relative to the critical shear strain obtained by the ground properties. The critical shear strain was defined as an allowable value for the maximum shear strain. We proposed the allowable overburden as tunnel face stability index (TFI) that satisfies the critical shear strain criterion of ground. Finally, a design chart of the allowable overburden for various cohesion values and friction angles of ground was created. This chart is useful in the preliminary tunnel design stage to judge the necessity of additional counter measures against normal tunnel support design.2. WEAK GROUND MODELING AND ANALYSIS PROCEDURE2.1 Setting material propertiesWith reference to a past study1), the material properties were adopted on the basis of material properties in the standard worst rock classification case called “DII”2) for standard support pattern of weak ground in Japan. The typical material properties for “DII” are listed in Table 1. In addition, Fig.1 shows the distribution of the representative weak ground according to cohesion and internal friction angle. When the internal friction angle is relatively high and the cohesion is weak, the ground is categorized as sandy ground. Furthermore, when the internal friction angle is low and the cohesion is strong, the ground is categorized as clayey ground."

Labor costs, which have rapidly increased in the industrial countries for several years, have forced the mining industry to develop new methods and cost saving systems. Also, because mining is basic to meeting the increasing requirements for raw materials, the mining industry is guaranteed a key position in cost cutting efforts. Although this report aims to describe major recent developments in the Federal Republic of Germany, it is restricted to a limited number of them in view of the wide variety of current innovations. The most important mining activities in West Germany are concentrated in the coal mines on the Rhine, Ruhr and Saar, in the lignite open-cast mines west of Cologne and in the potash and salt mining region in Lower Saxony and Hesse. This report will only discuss developments in the underground coal mines and the potash and salt mines, and focuses on projects of Salzgitter Maschinen and Anlagen AG (SMAG). HYDRAULIC DRILLS Drilling strata of varying strength One special difficulty faced in European coal mines is the varying of compressive strength of strata that occurs even over a few meters. The strata associated with the coal measures ranges from hard and tough sandstone or conglomerate to very soft carboniferous shale. It is often difficult to use continuous miners or roadheaders so that drifting by blasting still predominates. But the varying compressive strengths of the strata makes it difficult to choose the best method to drill the rock. For example, it is best to penetrate hard sandstone or conglomerate with heavy percussion drills. The soft carboniferous shale on the other hand, should be penetrated by high speed rotary drilling to obtain optimum performance.

Today the longwall is getting increasing attention in the United States as an excellent way to mine coal. This is not to say it is the best way in every mine because conditions, capital costs, and markets may well dictate another method. However, operators with working longwalls are often showing preference by phasing out room-and-pillar sections and replacing them with longwall. In the United States there are about 90 longwalls in operating coal mines and the number is increasing. In Europe, 95% of underground coal mining is by longwall compared with only 5% in the United States. In the Western States about 25% of the underground coal mines use longwall mining. There is logic behind the increase in longwalling. Compared to room-and-pillar mining, straight single-pass longwall has important advantages that show up in underground coal mining in any part of the country.

Learning to use computers begins during the first semester of the initial year of studies and culminates in the Mine Design Project done during the last semester of study. It covers all areas of computing which are judged to be of importance to the graduate.
