The evolution of engineering education and research has been profoundly influenced by computer technology and has concomitantly followed changes in this technology. Today, virtually all faculty have access to at least two hierarchies of computers: desk personal computers and at least one echelon higher (workstations or a variety of mid-sized computers). Most faculty have access to three or even four hierarchies: the two listed, plus super-mini and super computers. The ready availability of computers at a low cost has increased dedicated and site-specific computer technology. This has permitted universities to move into the field of macro-engineering, to address increasingly complex problems in resource recovery, manufacturing and many other areas, including important societal problems, like the environment. The creation of university research centers indicates the growing importance of macro-engineering involving large systems of interactive components. Funding agencies have increasingly favored such centers since they cross disciplines, generate inter-university consortia and foster university-industry programs.

Quarrying is an important activity as it significantly contributes to the economy of a country. This activity presupposes the destruction of the natural vegetation, the removal of the surface soil and deposition of inactive materials. The lack of fertile soil in these disturbed areas is usually a problem for the plant cover establishment. The purpose of this study was to investigate the potential of the establishment of ten herbaceous plant species to inactive quarries with the use of limited amount of fertile soil. The research was conducted in the area of the quarries of the cement manufacture company ?TITAN?, Thessaloniki, Greece. On a terrace of one of the quarries, a 2 cm layer of fertile soil was placed. In early October 2007, the herbaceous species, Lolium rigidum, Festuca arundinacea, Bromus inermis, Agropyrum desertorum, Phalaris aquatica, Dactylis glomerata, Medicago sativa, Medicago lupulina, Sanguisorba minor and Phacelia tanacetifolia, were seeded separately. The first results indicated that among the tested species Dactylis glomerata, Festuca arundinacea and Phacelia tanacetifolia had the highest establishment capability.

Computer simulation models of working mines can be a great benefit to mining engineers. Such models have been used in mine planning (how many trucks-shovels to have, when to add new equipment, etc.) and mine design (should a dispatch system be purchased, where is the optimum location, for mine equipment, etc.). A simulation model can be thought of as a dynamic representation of the mine. It can be easily changed to reflect a variety of situations. A major problem for the engineer is how to present the results of the simulation study. This has now been overcome by means of animation to present the results of the simulation. The main simulation languages in use for discrete system simulation are SLAM, SIMAN and GPSS/H. Each has animation with SLAMSYSTEM for SLAM, CINEMA for SIMAN and PROOF for GPSS/H. Animation with SLAM and CINEMA have been on the market for several years whereas PROOF is a relative newcomer and has features not found in other animation software. This discussion will be confined to PROOF. Some of the comments will apply to all simulation and animation software.

"Artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) occurs in many countries around the world, and provides a source of livelihood to many impoverished local people in areas where it occurs. This paper reports the role of female participants and reasons why they engage in ASM. Field visits were made to 12 ASM sites located in the Tarkwa Mining District of Ghana to conduct interviews with male diggers and female participants. It was observed that over 100 women between the ages of 18 and 50 participate in ASM for survival. They engage in ASM largely because they have no alternative employable skills and income sources. These female participants depend on ASM to sustain the lives of their dependents. INTRODUCTION Artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) conventionally involves use of rudimentary tools (such as picks, shovels, chisels and hammers) to exploit precious minerals and metals from the ground. It has been a major source of livelihood to many impoverished local people for more than a century. In many instances, it is the only source of income to indigenous people who have no alternative employable skills. The World Bank estimated that more than 100 million people around the world benefit from ASM which largely occurs in developing countries in Asia, Africa, Oceania, and South and Central America (World Bank, 2013). Cobalt, which is used in lithium-ion batteries to power cellphones, laptop computers, and electric vehicles, is largely produced by artisanal miners in Congo (The Washington Post, 2016). In Sudan, ASM is a significant contributor to the national economy, accounting for about 85% of total gold extracted yearly from 2010 to 2015 (Ibrahim, 2015). Also, according to the Embassy of Sierra Leone in Washington DC, USA, 90% of mineral export in Sierra Leone can be attributed to thriving artisanal diamond mining in the country (Sierra Leone Embassy, 2016). In Ghana, the ASM sector was recognized by government as a multimillion industrial activity, and through a series of initiatives, it was legalized by promulgating the Small Scale Gold Mining Law of 1989 (PNDCL 218). Presently, artisanal mining is widely practiced in two forms: licensed (registered), sometimes referred to as formal ASM, and unregistered (informal or illegal) operations, popularly called “galamsey”, a name believed to have been derived from “gather and sell” by ancient miners who could not communicate in the English language with European/British miners. The ASM sector in Ghana, like other countries, has seen a rise in female participation over the years. A report by the International Labour Organization (ILO) indicated that women account for about 15% of total workforce in ASM in Ghana, and up to 50% in Africa (ILO, 1999). Other researchers have also estimated women participants in ASM to be between 30 and 70% in Africa (Hinton et al., 2003a; Hinton et al. 2003b; Hilson, 2002). Presently, there is no reliable data from Ghanaian authorities on number of females engaged in ASM. However, data obtained from 15 ASM sites suggest that at least 40% of the employees are women. It is expected that a similar trend exists across ASM operations in Ghana."

Engineering programs usually do not provide sufficient opportunities for students to develop written communication skills. The responsibility for developing those skills is frequently delegated to the humanities faculty, who in a single technical writing course are supposed to transform engineering students into proficient communicators. A general template which was developed for report writing in our senior level capstone design courses is discussed. Students have improved their writing skills by using the template. The writing assignments have provided the students the opportunity to write and revise more technical reports that communicate their design.

Mine engineers have been interested in building models that simulate mining operations since computers were introduced to the industry in the 1960s. Computer models enable operational scenarios to be evaluated without the need for actual field experimentation. Virginia Tech’s FACESIM and CONSIM, Penn State’s UGMHS, and KETRON’s CPMINE are perhaps the best known early models. Recently, SIUC has modified a Microsoft® Excel version of Virginia Tech’s Mathematical Model, calling it the SSP Model. It is used to quantify the significance of various controllable parameters. Productivity increases approaching twenty percent may be achieved where recommendations suggested by the model are applied.

The Fort Cady in situ borate mining project involves recovery of boron from a mineral deposit located over 1400 feet below the surface. The resource recovery method is being developed using in situ mining technology employing weak acid solution injected directly into the ore body. As the acid contacts the calcium based ore (primarily natural colemanite), the contained borate values are digested as boric acid. This boric acid solution is then pumped to the surface by use of submersible pumps. At the surface the borate values are recovered as a finely divided solid white powder after a series of chemical reactions and precipitations resulting in the production of calcium borate. The refined product is then sold under the trade name CADYCAL 100.TM All environmental permits for up to a production rate of 90,000 tons per year have been obtained. These permits required an Environmental Impact study (EIS) for federal lands and an Environmental Impact Report (EIR) for the private portion of the property. Regulatory permitting required over 5 years to obtain all the various authorizations for this project. The ore body has an average thickness of 118 feet extending over 273 acres. At a production rate of 90,000 tons per year with only a 70 percent resource recovery allowance, in place reserves are sufficient to sustain production for over one hundred years.

Introduction People, systems, methods, and organization make up maintenance productivity. Methods promote efficiency in operations, systems ensure consistency and continuity, and organization maintains direction and control. The common denominator in these techniques, though, is people. Management systems can be technically correct, but fail to work because management systems do not work by themselves - people make them work. Therefore, the foundation for mine maintenance productivity must begin with the people involved. Traditionally, the emphasis placed on mine maintenance, as opposed to production, is not proportional to the impact that maintenance has on a mining operation. The performance and productivity of mine maintenance substantially affects the operating costs, revenues, and profits of the mine. The mining industry has recently experienced a period of economic depression. While it has created financial problems in all segments of the industry, it has caused the industry to focus on the need for improved productivity. Mining companies that have made investments in productivity during this period will have a competitive edge during the recovery, and mine maintenance may be the best place to put that investment. Future lost production and maintenance cost problems can be avoided if mine management has the foresight to seize the opportunities that now exist. Background Technological improvements over the last 30 years have been dramatic in the industry. Before these changes, mining equipment was not very sophisticated. So maintenance needs were not very sophisticated. Maintenance people were not required to have any formal training in mechanical or electrical skills. At many mines there was no formal maintenance organization. The mechanic was a part of the section crew and received direction from the face boss. Mine maintenance was not a function, it was a task. Technological change in mining came about in response to an expanding economy and greater demand for mined products. The past 20 years brought about a change in the kind of individual needed to mine ore and coal, and an even greater change in the person needed to maintain equipment. Equipment went from mechanical and pneumatic to complicated electrical and hydraulic. Maintenance progressed from being a task to being a function. Types of Mechanics Mine maintenance workers can be grouped into three categories based on experience: mechanics with more than 20 years, five- to 10-years, and less then five years. These groupings have influenced mine maintenance productivity. The 20-plus mechanic has been the foundation of the maintenance force. He had no formal training and his skills were acquired on the job. As new equipment was introduced, he learned to repair it by trial and error. Not all of what he learned was correct. Personal initiative and conscientiousness are characteristics of this group. They have experienced the bad times and the good, and appreciate the opportunity to work. The five- to 10-year group worked with the older, more experienced mechanics to acquire maintenance skills. These mechanics came in during industry boom times, and many progressed quickly by being in the right place at the right time. Many in this group have difficulty with diagnostic trouble-shooting, and depend on changing out parts to identify problems. This group is generally more mobile and less apt to have a strong work ethic. Mechanics with about five years experience have vocational training, some formal education or basic skills training. Like the five- to 10-year group, these miners are mobile and tend to move readily to satisfy their changing needs. These two younger groups are less apt to feel any loyalty to the employer or obligation to be productive. Their attitudes and abilities reflect the influence of their general age groups, and has a definite impact on mining productivity. Past Requirements In the 1960s, the basic requirements for a maintenance supervisor was that he be a top mechanic, get along well with the men, and be a hustler and improviser. He learned the details of new equipment as repairs were needed. Oftentimes, this individual would be the only person on the property with the ability to read prints, use diagnostic testing equipment, and troubleshoot using an analytical approach. This approach to maintenance is sufficient when the equipment design is reasonably uncomplicated. Management Changes As technology progressed, organized labor gained strength, government regulation increased, and the job of supervising and managing people had to change. Can the mining industry in the United States accept the change and challenge of the "Now Generation" of entirely new high-performance automated transportation systems? Good Question! While there has been some revolutionary new thinking and product testing in mining, none has taken place in transportation of ore and waste. With one notable exception - DASHAVEYOR - not a single really new and 'unconventional' system has even been tried on a small scale in the hardrock mines in our country. Admittedly, U.S. equipment manufacturers share the responsibility for the slow progress in mine transportation systems in our country, since they have provided very litte leadership in design innovation or education. First, let me give you my definition of what is meant by the term "Advanced Transportation Systems". Then I will describe and compare such systems, emphasizing the strong and weak features of each as they apply to vertical and horizontal haulage. I will conclude by establishing the principal requirements for implementation of these types of systems in the mining industry in the United States.

The need for improved safety and productivity brought about the introduction of longwall mining to the Appalachian coal fields. These same forces continue to drive developments in modern longwall equipment and mining practices. Current initiatives to improve productivity and safety are focused on automation and the effects of scale in equipment design. Longwall roof-supports, shearers and face-conveyors have changed significantly. Panel layouts have evolved to include larger total tonnages and provide for more rapid development of gate-entries. These advancements have improved longwall productivity and new production records are continually being set. Roof supports Reliability is implicit in the quest for automation. It is impossible to automate equipment if it is not reliable. To a large degree, this has been the problem with longwall shield automation efforts. The "electronic control" of shields depends on the proper functioning of electronic equipment, electrohydraulic valves and full-flow service valves onboard every support.

Compania Minera Disputada de las Condes S.A. (Disputada) is proactively implementing closure and reclamation planning activities at its mining and beneficiation facilities (mining facilities) in Chile where regulations governing mine reclamation are not yet fully in place. These activities are being implemented to improve currently employed measures to protect human health and the environment and to enhance reclamation and facilitate future closure with regard to these areas when mining is completed. As part of this process, Disputada, with the assistance of Shepherd Miller, Inc., developed recommendations and guidelines for future closure and reclamation of the Disputada sites. These recommendations and guidance incorporate planning and operational and post-operational design considerations and practices, and standards used by the mining industry and regulatory agencies around the world. The criteria presented in the guidance are based on achieving conditions that will be suitable for the anticipated post-mining land use. This paper discusses the process and approach taken, and the results.

Pachuca tanks are used widely in the mineral industry for leaching and mixing operations. An analysis has been presented previously to predict circulation of homogenous slurry in Pachuca tanks with full height draft tubes. However, settling of solids causes deviation from the homogenous case. Circulation of settling slurry in a Pachuca tank is modeled and shown to be a function of settling velocity, solids fraction, solid and liquid density, air flew rate, and tank dimensions. The pressure balance is shown to be very sensitive to these parameters, especially at low slurry velocities. Equations for predicting the air requirements in Pachuca tanks containing settling solids are presented.

Evans Industries, Inc., a management coal consultant and company was assigned to evaluate National Steel Company's coal properties in Knott and Floyd Counties, Kentucky. The results of evaluation showed large reserves of good quality, high volatile metallurgical coal contained in the Elkhorn coal beds and resulted in the formation of Beaver Creek Consolidated Coal Company. Based on results of the exploration and feasibility work, the decision was to install a coal nine, preparation plant and related facilities having a production capacity of one' and three quarter million tons per year with Evans Industries acting as Beaver Creek's management company. The recoverable tonnage assigned to the Stinson Mine is approximately forty-five million tons. This paper discusses the general arrangement of storage, conveying, loading, refuse disposal facilities and the flow sheet of the preparation plant developed by engineers of Heyl & Patterson, Inc., and Evans Industries, Inc., with emphasis on practical flexibility, sulfur reduction in all circuits, and high product yield with the minimum amount of selective mining, Three and one-half miles of railroad have been built by the Chesepeake & Ohio Railroad to service this mine.

Precast concrete segmental tunnel linings have been used since at least 1903. More serious attention was devoted to them in England during the World War II steel shortage and they have become increasingly common since that time. They are now coming into common use in the United States, especially as primary linings for soft ground tunnels and for rock tunnels in poor ground, although they have also been used as final lining, especially in rock tunnels. The developmental logic, design considerations, and current practices are examined. Particular attention is given to unbolted linings, with and without secondary linings. Probable future developments are considered.

All complete plant foods require phosphorus, nitrogen and potassium. And phosphate rock is the primary source for the phosphorus of the inorganic fertilizers. As more and more world food production is grown with these chemical fertilizers and since the Florida field supplies over 30% of the phosphorus component, let us look at the vital phosphate industry. Mining of phosphate rock in Central Florida began in 1891 and production has continued to grow at a steady pace. In 1965 a phosphate mine was opened in Hamilton County, North Florida and one in Beaufort County, North Carolina in 1966 . Since the beginning of mining in 1891, approximately 700 million metric tons of phosphate rock have been produced of this amount one-half was mined in the last 11 years. While the field was not deliberately "high-graded," the best of the known deposits were mined first. Those now being mined, and those yet to be mined, cost more to operate and the product is of lower grade. The U. S. Bureau of Mines' data for 1977 lists "Florida" phosphate rock production as 40.6 million tons; 86% of U. S. production and 85% of "Florida" capacity. The U. S. Bureau of Mines includes North Carolina production in "Florida" statistics so as not to reveal individual data for the one mine operating there. Approximately one-half of "Florida" production is exported, either as rock or as rock equivalent in upgraded products. Deposits of phosphate rock necessary to support present and future production are catalogued as: reserves, paramarginal reserves and resources. Reserves denote deposits which can be mined at a profit now. Paramarginal reserves are defined by the U. S. Bureau of Mines and the U. S. Geological Survey as: that portion of sub-economic resources that a) borders on being capable of production economically, or b) is not commercially available solely because of legal or political circumstances. The " b)" part of this definition may now be expanded to include environmental controls and requirements. Resources are deposits which cannot be mined at a profit at present. Listed in Table I are reasonable values for each of the three categories of phosphate deposits in the northern and southern parts of Central Florida. North Florida and North Carolina.

Geologic mapping techniques at the Bingham Mine have evolved as rapidly expanding applications of geological data have caused new methods to be utilized. The most significant changes in method have been in the preparation of the base map and in computer application of collected data. Formerly maps were prepared by surveying with transit or plane table. Currently a photogrammetric map, on the scale of 1-inch equals 200-feet, is prepared semi-annually and continuously updated to keep pace with the removal of more than 350,000 tons of material daily. Larger scale bases for specific problems, such as areas having unstable slopes, are prepared by use of aerial and terrestial photography and photo mosaics. Note sheets designed for computer application enable fast processing of the data. Application of geology at the Bingham Mine has been increasing rapidly in recent years. The effect of structure, rock type, and alteration on slope stability, the relationship of sulfide mineral distribution to concentrating results, the effect of rock and mineral types on waste dump leaching, and requirements of a reliable internal source of silica flux for smelting are a few of the problems which require the collection and application of geologic data.

There are similarities, and differences, in the surfactants used in cosmetics and detergents. In both applications anionic surfactants constitute the major category. Their main function is to clean, i.e. remove grease and particulate matter from fibrous or hard surface substrates. Cationic surfactants are used for conditioning substrates. Nonionic surfactants can function as a substrate cleanser but are seldom used as such in cosmetics; however, selected non-ionics are often employed as a primary emulsifier. Several specialized nonionic surfactants are used as a secondary surfactant in formulations to promote foaming and emulsification. Specific examples and modes of action of surfactants will be presented.

"As the speed of business has continued to increase over the last decade, the focus on real-time control of the performance of both stationary and mobile assets has become an increasing priority. Traditionally the maintenance team has been focused on the management of the availability of assets while the operations team has been focused on the throughput of those same assets. Typically operations and maintenance teams worked almost independently in spite of the fact that they were both working with the same assets. Part of the problem has been their traditional performance measures which have often been diametrically opposed. Recent advancements in the area of real-time performance measures and decision support have helped to drive higher levels of collaboration between operations and maintenance leading to real-time asset performance control and higher levels of business performance. This paper will explore the forces driving the need for changes, present an effective approach to the definition of the most appropriate business performance measures, and examine the effectiveness of contextualized real-time decision support resulting in asset performance control. TRADITIONAL APPROACHES TO ASSET PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT In most industrial operations the phrase asset performance management is synonymous with maintenance of the industrial assets. This is the way industry has viewed asset management and asset performance management for decades. This is a very limited perspective that is serving to constrain the profitability of industrial operations. As industrial organizations began to form following the Industrial Revolution, the complexity of the operations forced an organizational design based on specialization. No single person could understand all of the aspects of an industrialized operation. This was particularly true at the plant floor level where the operation and maintenance of the industrial equipment required very different skillsets and training. To accommodate the vast differences most industrial organizations set up operations teams to run the equipment and maintenance teams to keep the equipment available to the operation. Both teams were dealing with the same industrial equipment but from very different perspectives and with very different performance measures. Typically the operations team was measured on maximizing the output of the equipment – or throughput. On the other hand the maintenance team was measured on the uptime – or availability of the equipment."

Michigan is the second largest iron ore producing state in the United States. The Empire Mine, celebrating its 30th anniversary in 1994, is the largest iron ore mine in the state. The Empire Iron Mining Partnership is an iron ore mining, concentrating and pelletizing facility managed by The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co., a subsidiary of Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. The Empire Mine is located near Palmer, MI on the Marquette Iron Range in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The partnership includes Inland Steel Co., LTV Steel Co., Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corp. and Cleveland-Cliffs. Mine construction began in 1960. The first pellets were produced in late 1963. Successive expansions in 1967, 1974 and 1979 resulted in Empire reaching a present annual capacity of 8.1 Mt (8 million long tons) of pellets. In late 1993, a milestone was reached with the production of Empire's 152-Mt (150-millionth long ton) of iron ore pellets.
