AMAX Coal Company has constructed the first commercial demonstration sub-bituminous coal dryer at its Belle Ayr Mine south of Gillette, Wyoming. This 215 ton per hour facility is projected to produce 165 tons per hour of dried coal at 10 percent moisture and 10,800 Btulpound (6,000 KCIkg). Approximately 43 tons per hour of water will be removed from the coal and seven tons per hour of coal burned as fuel.

Lancaster Lime and Stone Corporation developed a quarry operation in 1971 and 1972 for the production of high calcium limestone and construction aggregates, or roadstone. The quarry operation is situated in southeastern Pennsylvania in the northern part of Lancaster County. The geology of the high calcium limestone deposit had a powerful influence on all aspects of planning this operation. My purpose is to trace the influence of geology throughout the planning and thereby point out the discipline that geology imposed on the planning, and indeed, continues to impose on the operation. Lancaster Lime and Stone Corporation is one of four wholly- owned subsidiary companies of Kurtz Materials Corporation. Kurtz Materials Corporation, through its operating subsidiaries, is a supplier of basic materials to the construction industry including crushed stone, ready mixed concrete, concrete masonry units and a wide range of precast and prestressed concrete products.

The Guillermo Gaviria Echeverri tunnel and its access roads project in Antioquia, Colombia is a mega infrastructure project that includes a road network with the longest tunnel in Latin America and several short tunnels, the latter being the focus of this study. The design of the project required careful consideration of several special factors, such as the tunnels’ steep slopes of up to 5%, high fire load of 100 MW, bidirectional operation, and short lengths that make it difficult to place ventilation equipment. The combination of all these parameters cause a challenging design problem for the ventilation systems and smoke control of the short tunnels. To address this challenge, a risk assessment study was conducted to support the design of a new and innovative ventilation strategy that deviates from relevant guidelines and standards, like the Austrian RVS [1][5][6] or the German EABT [8] in order to provide a customized solution for this particular project. This strategy resulted a cost-effective solution, that allowed a reduction in the number of required jet fans and at the same time reaches or reduces the risk level compared to traditional ventilation strategies.

Methane levels have been measured around continuous miners and compared with computer simulations of methane flow. A multi-channel data logger, reading continuously from six methanometers, has shown methane levels to vary at different positions around a continuous miner, with the cutting drum and the immediate face area not necessarily recording the highest concentrations. Methane levels in the driver's cabin are generally low compared with the return side. Computer simulations, using computational fluid dynamics, have been supported by the measured data, and have shown that methane behaviour within the first few metres of the face varies considerably for different bord and pillar development stages. Methane is diluted rapidly to acceptable levels, but the distance required for this is extended when ventilation flow to the face is restricted.

INTRODUCTION The Advisory Conference on Tunneling held in Washington, D.C. in 1970 under the auspices of the organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) forecast that $54 billion would be expended by member countries on underground construction in the 1970s. Construction activity since the Conference indicates the forecast may have been conservative. Statistics in the report indicated a vast increase in tunneling projects for mass transit, hydro-electric development, railroad tunnels, sewer and sewage retention reservoirs and water tunnels. Development of equipment is required to meet the demands for high speed excavation and provide tunnel driving systems with maximum efficiency and capability to sustain high speed advance rates. BORING MACHINE CAPABILITY During the last decade, use of Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) has increased. Where ground conditions and limits of machine design criteria permit, circular tunnel sections are either the only section , or an alternate sections specified in the documents: a TBM is either required or is an acceptable alternate means of tunneling. The New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) has been successfully applied to two very different tunneling projects in the U.S.. In the case of Pittsburgh's Mt. Lebanon Tunnels, two original design alternatives were prepared. The NATM alternative incorporating a reinforced shotcrete final lining was successfully bid and constructed. At Washington Metro's (WMATA) Section B-10 Glenmont Route, Wheaton Station and tunnels, a NATM value engineering redesign was prepared for the low bidder. The design incorporating a waterproofing system based on a PVC membrane between the initial and final linings was accepted by WMATA. In both cases, European experience and standards were meshed with U.S. standard practice. Examples of NATM flexibility as an original design and as a value engineering proposal are presented.

The mining workforce experiences high rates of hazardous noise exposure and hearing loss. However, previous studies have identified specific behavioral and attitudinal barriers that keep miners from effectively acting to prevent their own hearing loss. The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has developed several new hearing loss prevention tools and interventions that specifically target these barriers to prevention. The NIOSH Hearing Loss Simulator addresses motivation to take action and knowledge about the consequences of noise exposure. The QuickFit earplug test device and QuickFitWeb online hearing protection tester address barriers to effective earplug and earmuff use by verifying at least 15 decibels of protection. The NIOSH Roll-Pull-Hold technique helps miners obtain better protection through an easy-to-remember set of steps that improves attenuation by nine decibels. The “Inquiring Ears Want to Know” fact sheet helps miners to understand audiograms and to use them to maintain their hearing health. Each of these interventions can be used within the context of a comprehensive hearing loss prevention program.

Wireless technologies are increasingly being implemented in underground mines for various purposes such as communications, tracking, remote control, remote sensing, and environmental monitoring. However, the adoption comes with risks as common wireless systems, such as WiFi, Bluetooth, IWT (Innovative Wireless Technologies) wireless system, often operate in the unlicensed ISM (industrial, scientific, and medical) band. The shared nature of the ISM band can lead to interference among devices and consequently cause performance degradation and reliability issues. In this study, we developed two wireless communication evaluation boards as a tool to evaluate the performance and reliability of a wireless system with the presence of electromagnetic interferences (EMI) from other wireless systems in underground environments. We adjusted various parameters including signal power from adjacent frequency channels, noise power within the same channel, the movement of personnel, and communication packet size. Our findings indicate that, while the power of the EMI source plays a key role, the motion of personnel in the tunnel also has a strong impact on performance, and this impact increases as the power of EMI sources increases. In noisy environments, smaller packet sizes are preferable as they enhance the likelihood of successful transmission. High levels of interference or noise can lead to increased packet loss or error rates, potentially causing communication links to fail completely or become ineffective. The evaluation boards utilized in this study are based on a practical wireless transmission system deployed in a remote controller for a heavy mining machinery used in underground coal mines. The results and findings presented in this paper can aid in the design of wireless systems that are resilient to EMI in underground mining environments.

At IMC we have done a great deal of thinking and talking about computer control. In the course of these discussions the operating people have asked a number of questions about computer control. These questions and our answers to them make up the main part of this article. Obviously, the answer as to whether or not to go into computer control will be an individual problem conditioned by your company's circumstances. What I hope to do here is raise some questions, give you an idea of our thinking on the subject, and lay out some general guidelines for you to consider.

From the aspect of economic feasibility of mining, ineffective use of expensive mechanization investments is becoming a problem. In many cases, the machinery is in operation only 50 - 60 % of the total working time. The lost time when the machines are idle means a considerable over-investment in machines. The lost time, with LHD equipment in particular, accumulates from the following constituents: - the needs of the person operating the machine trips to the work site, lunch, coffee and other breaks, want for comfort, etc. - deficiencies in the monitoring and control systems for machine operation waiting periods at loading and unloading stations, unnecessary and erroneous actions, inefficient work, etc. - deficiencies in the machine condition monitoring system , and inefficient service and maintenance work The data transfer and computer technology of today provides means for resolving problems in several areas - including the area of underground loading operations. In the paper those areas of automation and data handling are considered which make possible an improvement in the usage and monitoring of LHD equipment. These fields are: remote control of equipment, use of TV cameras and monitors in remote control, locating equipment and data transfer down the mine, measurement of the load and the data storing system, systems for following the condition of the equipment, unmanned operation of equipment.

The first application of dynamic pro¬gramming to the problem of grade control and scheduling was by Muge et al (1979) and Ribeiro (1982) who applied it to the simple, two-dimensional case of longitudinal open stoping using two sublevels. In this paper the formulation of the problem is extended to cover the general case applied to a cut-and-fill mining method. The criterion for optimization is the total deviation of the average, grades of mining blocks from the overall average panel grade (or the average grade of a set of mining panels or the mine processing working point). This means to schedule the operation by removing a certain number of mining blocks at a time, subject to the geometric (mining) constraints, and such that the total deviation of average block grades from overall average grade is minimum. The method can be applied to complex orebodies with several ore characteristics and the deviation of each one of these characteristics can be further constrained by specifying maximum values. The method can also be generalised in order to take into account any necessary geometric constraints used to define the mining method. In this paper a case study is presented concerning the mine planning of a complex sulphide orebody located in the South of Portugal. As input for the definition of the mining sequence, a geostatistical numerical model of the orebody was built based on a previous ore typology. The short term planning is used to assess specific mining sequences and the production scheduling is performed on the basis of an objective function (e.g. minimization of grade fluctuation).

The Bureau of Mines, U. S. Department of the Interior, has developed a method of dewatering clay slurries based on flocculation by high-molecular-weight polymers and water removal from the formed flocs using a trommel or hydrosieve. The exchange ion on the clays affects their dewaterability. Metal ions in solution and on the exchange sites of smectite clays are known to act as Lewis acids. Recent work has determined that these ions can be titrated with high-molecular-weight polymers. The relative acidity of the exchange ion and the basicity of the polymer determined by the new method give insight into the dewatering mechanism.

With increased CO2 emissions from steel and coal industry, there is great opportunity to capture CO2 and utilize the captured CO2 for economic advantage. The primary goal is to develop energy-efficient processes that reductively couple CO2, an abundant and renewable carbon source, for the production of value-added chemicals such as methanol, ethanol, and oxalic acid. These chemicals can be used elsewhere in the refining process or sold as valuable by-products. Geological sequestration, in comparison, has no economic return. Current CO2 utilization research at Michigan Technological University focuses on electrochemical reduction of CO2. Electrochemical reduction of CO2 to hydrocarbons and other chemicals is a complex multistep reaction with adsorbed intermediates. The exact reaction mechanisms leading to various products are not clear from the literature to date and will likely change over the range of conditions like pH, electrode potential, electrolyte medium, catalyst, etc. This paper will present different ideas and their viability to utilize CO2 as a feedstock to produce several value-added compounds. INTRODUCTION Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions into the atmosphere will need to be drastically reduced to curb the various undesirable effects of climate change. The large contribution in total CO2 emission originates from coal or natural gas power plants, and a considerable amount from steel plants. Average CO2 emissions in the US from steel industry is 2.9t CO2/t steel (Global CCS Institute 2013). Capturing the available CO2 from the steel and coal industries for economic advantage is a win-win situation for the industry. This technology is not only important scientifically but is also vital for a sustainable future. The various ongoing investigations can be categorized as biochemical, thermochemical, photochemical, and electrochemical approaches. Among these, the electrochemical method shows the most promise as an efficient form of CO2 conversion technology, because of its many advantages like high reactivity under ambient conditions and good extensibility from small- to large-scale processes1 BACKGROUND Extensive research has been done on the chemistry of transforming carbon dioxide into more useful products. Methods are known to convert carbon dioxide into a wide variety of substances, including methanol, isobutanol, carbohydrates, methane, carbonates, urea, formic acid, oxalic acid, carbon monoxide, epoxides, formaldehyde, and so on. Several of these (carbohydrates, formaldehyde, isobutanol etc.) are primarily results from biological processes. The rest are results of strong reduction reactions or electrolytic reduction. In short, electrolytic reduction can be used to form methane, methanol, formic acid, oxalic acid, carbon monoxide from carbon dioxide2. CO2 reduces at the cathode in an electrolysis cell. These processes have the general form of generating the carbon dioxide anion radical (2⋅−) and allowing it to react with itself or the electrolyte3. Catalysts can be added to influence the formation of the anion radical or to suppress side reactions3. The electrolyte, catalyst, voltage, electrode material and CO2 content are all known to effect the reaction pathway. "The Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (NEORSD) recently completed the 24-foot diameter Euclid Creek Tunnel using a steel-fiber reinforced concrete segmental lining. During construction HMM, the McNally/Kiewit JV, CSI/Hanson JV, and the NEORSD performed a test program to evaluate replacement of steel fiber with synthetic fiber. A section of synthetic-fiber-reinforced cast-in-situ lining was also placed as part of the permanent works for the starter and tail tunnels. Laboratory and field testing were performed on two complete segmental rings reinforced solely with synthetic fibers. This paper summarizes the testing program, construction, and results of the synthetic-fiber-reinforced CIP lining and concrete segments. INTRODUCTION The principal feature of the Euclid Creek Tunnel (ECT) project is a CSO storage tunnel that is one component of the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District’s (NEORSD) Easterly CSO storage and conveyance system. The tunnel, shafts, and appurtenant facilities will be used for the collection and storage of CSOs from the northeastern part of Cleveland, Ohio and subsequent conveyance to the NEORSD’s Easterly Wastewater Treatment Plant for treatment. The ECT project includes five drop shafts that extend as deep as 220 feet below the ground surface. The ECT alignment and shaft locations are shown in Figure 1. Traditionally in northeast Ohio, tunnel excavations were supported with a two-pass system using steel ribs and timber lagging, followed by cast-in-place concrete. Control of rock overbreak proved difficult with large-diameter two-pass operation, and invert degradation led to train derailments. To mitigate these risks, the ECT was supported using one-pass, precast, bolted, gasketed concrete segments reinforced with steel fiber alone. Tunneling operations were very successful and experienced no significant delays or claims. As a result of the positive ECT experience with steel fiber-reinforced segments, Hatch Mott MacDonald, LLC (HMM), McNally/Kiewit (MK) joint venture, CSI/Hanson (CSI/H) joint venture, and the NEORSD performed a test program to evaluate replacement of steel fibers with synthetic fibers in segmental rings. This paper presents the laboratory and field testing program, construction, and results of the synthetic-fiber-reinforced cast-in-place (CIP) lining and concrete segments."

Mining data collection, storage, and interpretation methods have progressively changed over time. Data collection, for the most part, has transitioned from handwritten notes and logs based on manual gauge readings to real-time data streaming through instrumentation capable of directly communicating with site-based data historians or cloud storage. Data collection and storage have had to adjust commensurately with the volume of data, leading to more complex database architecture. Geoscience interpretation methods have also changed; however, the first goals of modeling and understandings from first principles remain the same and are typically deeply rooted in historical academic work. Machine learning methods are becoming more common, available, and implemented by industry and practitioners. Despite the wide accessibility of machine learning methods, the population of geoscience subject matter experts in the underlying theory of this analysis type is limited. This form of analysis, therefore, must be conducted carefully and in conjunction with subject matter experts, on both machine learning theory and the field it is being applied to. This paper aims to provide background history on data analytics and machine learning, current methods and practices, and high-level geoscience case study examples, as well as take aways regarding the mining industry, potential pitfalls specific to geosciences, and possible perspectives on the direction of artificial intelligence in the future.

Relax: the world today is not running short of many mineral commodities, even though prices are spiraling upward. Einstein?s observation still holds true that everything is still relative, as long as one can pass on the incremental costs of production to the consumer. However, a strong consensus exists among many of the companies comprising the minerals processing industry that it is becoming increasingly difficult to find the easy-to-mine, high-quality resources that make juicy profit margins, which shareholders like. For the most part, the resource cherries have all been picked, and established mineral processing companies that are exhausting their reserves, or in the process of looking to add reserves so as to create longevity for their company, have no recourse but to look long and hard at what were once considered the dregs of the earth. Even end users, such as steel companies, are now looking to become ?miners,? to establish captive iron ore resources. Owning a captive resource facilitates a dependable supply of feed materials, which translates into effective cost control and a guarantee for a thriving sustainable business in the future.

Sustainability management and reporting plays an important role in controlling and communicating a company's efforts in sustainable development. A variety of standards comprising a multitude of indicators often require similar information but with different data quality, level of detail and coverage. This may lead to inconsistencies in external communication because of the difficulties in collection and aggregation of data from different company sites and organisational levels. Using a central database system accessible via internet makes the process of data management more efficient: All relevant information can be collected on-site, with a defined data quality, credibility and consistency. Any type of sustainability indicator can be calculated automatically, once the data is collected. Individual analyses and predefined reports, e.g. GRI G3, can be easily generated and immediately published, making your sustainability communication transparent and reliable.

In 1994, more than 41 of the approximately 160 coal-fired, electrical- power plants within the six-state Ohio River Valley region used flue-gas desulfurization (FGD) units to desulfurize their emissions, an approximately 100% increase over the number of plants using FGD units in 1989. This increase represents a trend that may continue with greater efforts to meet Federal Clean Air Act standards. Abundant limestone resources exist in the Ohio River Valley and are accessed by approximately 975 quarries. However, only 35 of these are believed to have supplied limestone for FGD electrical generating facilities. The locations of these limestone suppliers do not show a simple spatial correlation with FGD facilities, and the closest quarries are not being used in most cases. Thus, reduction in transportation costs may be possible in some cases. Most waste generated by FGD electrical-generating plants is not recycled. However, many FGD sites are relatively close to gypsum wallboard producers that may be able to process some of their waste.
