With the accession to WTO and the establishment of Shanghai Gold Exchange, gold mines in China are facing more severe competition from both home and abroad. Supply Chain Management (SCM), a new management idea gradually accepted all over the world, provides the gold mines in China with a new management mode. In this thesis, under the guidance of SCM theory, based on the analyzing to the actualities of Jiaojia Gold Mine, the Jiaojia supply chain framework is constructed, the function system for Jiaojia SCM is configured, and function modules are described in detail. Each year the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy offers a prize (or prizes should the entries warrant it) of up to RlOO for the best paper or dissertation on a topic appropriate to the interests of the Institute. The competition is open to all Student Members of the Institute. A Student Member who is in fulltime study at a university may submit the dissertation or thesis he has to write in part fulfilment of his university degree, provided that it is presented in a manner and on a topic suitable for publication in the journal. Entries for 1976 should reach the Institute by 31st December, 1976.

Dr H. J. van Eck (Honorary Life Member): "Mr President, I regard it as a signal honour that I was invited to address the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy on its 75th Anniversary. I also wish to add my congratulations and good wishes to the many you have already received on this memorable occasion. Seventy-five years is indeed a good age and the achievements of your Institute certainly justify this special celebration. South Africa owes her present prosperity largely to the technological ability and determination of her own people. Members of the Institute contributed in large measure to this great development of our country and through the years have upheld their high reputation for scientific integrity, dynamic enterprise and dedicated service. It was their knowledge which provided the key to unlocking the mineral wealth which lay dormant for countless ages. The history of world mining dates back many centuries. We know of the mercury mines of Spain, the tin mines of Cornwall and the zinc mines of Poland, but it was not until colonization of the western hemisphere started in about 1500 that mining of any consequence began in North America. It is true that the peoples of South America and Mexico had accumulated wealth out of gold and silver, but industrialized mining was not a feature of these agrarian cultures. The mining wealth that eventually developed in North America was based on advances in the technology of processing minerals and served as an incentive to people in other new countries. Big mines were opened elsewhere in the world. From Canada, Mexico, Venezuela, Brazil, Peru, Chile, Bolivia, Rhodesia, Australia, Burma and India, to name but a few, there has been a steadily increasing production of an expanding range of minerals and metals. By the middle of the 20th century the trend was to increase the production and use of such comparatively uncommon metals as cobalt, nickel, titanium, and others, and a great mining rush started to search for, and develop, the deposits of uranium, and related radio-active minerals. It is worth pausing a few minutes to reflect that most of early mining was based on the recovery of virgin metals like gold and silver or easily treated high grade ores of copper, tin and zinc. Today, much of this type of mining would be regarded as picking the eyes out of the mine. With the development of improved ore separating, ore concentration and recovery processes, we developed into bulk mining and bulk treatment and in South Africa we have some very big mines, also outside the gold mining industry at Phalaborwa, for instance. Mining techniques are applied which compare with the best in the world. These large mines could only develop because of the perfection of new concentrating techniques and, of course, because of the development of markets. We have mentioned nickel and cobalt. These names were given to those mischievous mining sprites called nickels and kobolds to whom the suspicious miners ascribed their inability to smelt copper from copper nickel or arsenious copper ores. In South Africa, the presence of minerals was known to the modern Western world as far back as 1497 when Vasco da Gama found the native 'strandlopers' at the St. Helena Bay wearing copper rings. In 1669, after the British East India Company had formed their settlement, they employed miners and assayers in prospecting for minerals and in 1685 found traces of copper in the copper mountain of Namaqualand where some 170 years later a rich deposit of copper was to be opened up. MINING IN SOUTH AFRICA Mining is the single most important contributor to this country's foreign-exchange earnings. Minerals and processed mineral products together account for about 70 per cent of South Africa's total foreign exchange earnings. The mining sector employs in excess of 670 000 people, and is one of the largest employers in the country. The construction and development of cities and towns like Johannesburg, Welkom, Orkney, Springs, Benoni, Witbank, and Klerksdorp is a direct result of the contributions of the mining industry to economic activity in these areas, as well as of the multiplier effect of secondary industries.

The work described in this paper is an attempt to increase present-day knowledge of fatigue in mine hoisting cables, particularly the internal energy loss arising from interwire/strand friction in a cable undergoing periodic non-planar transverse vibration. Such frictional energy loss is known to be one of the major influences limiting useful working life of hoisting cables in use today, and is responsible for the large capital outlay required to maintain the high safety factors prescribed by the mining industry. The experimental method employed identifies two mechanical characteristics of cables that are independent of amplitude and frequency, and are primarily attributed to the type of cable construction. Interest is focused the time rate of change of curvature as the major parameter influencing the internal damping mechanism. Empirical results confirm that amplitude and mode number play an important role in quantifying the internal losses, and also reveal that a critical radius of curvature exists below which damage due to vibration fatigue rises exponentialy to potentially high levels.

Raise and shaft drilling, a continuing development RICHARD J. ROBBINS* (Visitor) Although the past decade has witnessed many improvements in large-diameter drilling machinery for the boring of raises, there is still room for improvement both in operational use and in the design of equipment. Some of the available machines are described and illustrated, and it is concluded that the possibilities of new systems and designs should continually be re-assessed since the factors that determine their feasibility, such as bore diameter, cutter costs, and penetration rates, are changing rapidly.

As you pointed out, furnace power factor (and consequently transformer MVA rating) depends upon the inductive reactance, and so it is desirable to design for the lowest possible value of this parameter. The further introduction on the primary side of the transformer of capacitors, whether in shunt or in series, increases the network power factor but does not alter the furnace power factor; that is, the phase angle between electrode to- hearth voltage and current remains unchanged. Previous investigations of stress conditions under which core discing occurs have concentrated on shear stress as the cause of this phenomenon. METRICATION In order to bring South Africa into line with metric countries the world over and in view of the indisputable advantages of using the comma as a decimal sign, the Metrication Advisory Board has decided to recommend that the comma be used consistently as decimal sign as from April 1, 1971. Numbers consisting of more than three figures are separated by spaces into groups of three to the left and right of the comma, and not by commas, e.g... 2 734 671,512 73 A quantity such as 12,41 kg is read as "twelve comma four one kilograms" and 31,34 km as "thirty-one comma three four kilometres." A motor-car previously described as a 3.8 litre model now becomes a 3,8 litre model. THE BRITISH COUNCIL AWARDS 1972-1973 The British Council invites applications from permanent residents of all races in the Republic of South Africa and South West Africa, for the following awards:- SCHOLARSHIPS Scholarships are available to such residents who hold University degrees or comparable professional qualifications. The scholarships are tenable for post-graduate study at Universities and other educational establishments in Britain for the academic year of approximately ten months beginning 1st October 1972. All arrangements will be made by the British Council and the scholarships will include tuition fees, a maintenance allowance, approved travel in Britain, return fares to Britain, a books grant and a clothing grant. The closing date for applications is 31st July, 1971. BURSARIES Bursaries are available to such permanent residents who hold University degrees or who, being already established in their professions or trades, hold other qualifications. The bursaries are tenable at British educational in-institutions or other suitable establishments in Britain for a course of training, study or research lasting not less than two months or more than six. The British Council will arrange full programmes and professional contacts, and the bursaries will include a maintenance grant, a books grant, authorised course fees and certain other expenses. The British Council may, at its discretion, bear the cost of single or return fares to Britain. The closing date for application is 31st July, 1971. TRAVEL GRANTS Travel grants each of £300 are available in respect of journeys to Britain undertaken between 1st April, 1972, and 31st March, 1973, and are provided to facilitate visits to British Universities by persons holding staff appointments or graduate research posts at South African Universities. Visits must normally be of at least six months duration though grants are occasionally made for visits lasting for one complete term. Grant holders will make their own arrangements with the universities which they wish to visit and will be responsible for finding their own accommodation. The British Council's assistance is limited to the contribution towards cost of fares. The closing date for applications is 31st October, 1971. A mineralogical investigation of the main causes of refractoriness of some metalurgicaly complex gold ores in South Africa is reported. It is shown that this refractoriness is related to the presence of submicroscopic gold, carbonaceous material, pyrhotite, and base-metal sulphides. Gold ores can be classified according to their content of these components. Electron-microprobe analysis shows that gold occurs in arsenopyrite and pyrite, the gold contents of which can be up to 2700 gft. The gold and arsenic contents of these minerals are closely corelated. Furthermore, within zoned arsenopyrite grains, the concentration of gold closely folows that of arsenic. Mossbauer spectroscopy caried out on samples of concentrate from the Barberton area indicates that the submicroscopic gold within the sulphides is in a non-metalic form. The mineralogical examination of beneficiation products is important, since it sheds light on some fundamental aspects of the behaviour of the ore and gangue components during milling and flotation. Such basic information will lead ultimately to a better understanding of the problems in the beneficiation of these ores. Investigations have shown that the overmiling of the auriferous arsenopyrite and the disseminated nature of the sulphide mineralization are the main problems during beneficiation.

Exploration, and other, boreholes are drilled to obtain information about the geological environment. Knowledge of the exact position (dip and direction) of the holes is important to ensure compatibility between the hole and the geological information. Kumba Resources traditionally used mechanical methods to determine the hole characteristics. These are cumbersome and expensive, and as a consequence a new method, the IVEC (Iscor Video Exploration Camera), was developed which utilizes a charged coupled device (CCD) image sensor focused on a three-dimensional compass. This system is rugged, relatively inexpensive and gives real-time results during borehole logging. Keyword: Borehole inclination, deviation, dip and direction, geophysics, exploration.
