The pre-concentration process of magnetic coarse particles can discharge waste rock or liberated gangue before milling, which is an effective means to reduce cost and increase the efficiency of the concentrator, but the weakly magnetic ore doesn’t have the effective separation method of coarse particle such as hematite, limonite, ilmenite and so on, Because the composite iron minerals contain both strong and weak magnetic elements, the pre-concentration process cannot be applied, or the existing pre-concentration process has problems of complicated configuration and high operation cost. By researching a new type of external magnetic separation technology, the pre-concentration process of composite iron ore was realised by single equipment, which can have a good recovery rate with simple arrangement. In this paper, the separation principle and structure characteristics of the external magnetic separator were researched, and the magnetic circuit characteristics of the external magnet were analysed. The laboratory tests of vanadium titanium magnetite were conducted, and the test results proved that the external magnetic separator can be applied for the pre-concentration process. The industrial application shows that a product of TFe 24.76% with 90.08% recovery, TiO2 10.10% with 91.78% recovery can be achieved from the feed of TFe 20.67%, TiO2 8.33%. Resistivity tests indicated that, at temperatures lower than 1450°C, reducing agents alone, as well as burdens consisting of high-carbon ferrochromium and reducing agents, exhibit wide differences in resistivity. These differences are less pronounced at elevated temperatures. The resistivity of a reducing agent and the volume fraction it occupies are important factors controlling the resistivity of burdens of high-carbon ferrochromium. A mathematical model is formulated to describe the dependence of the resistivity of mixtures of conducting and insulating particles on the particle sizes and the volume fraction occupied by the conducting phase. The resistivity of burdens of high-carbon ferrochromium is high if the particle size of the reducing agent is larger than that of the other components of the burden. A number of reducing agents showed small variations in their reactivity towards chromite ore in the solid state. However, with chromite ore in the liquid state, reduction proceeded more rapidly with reducing agents occupying larger volume fractions. During the smelting of manganese ore, high initial rates of reduction were observed for reducing agents that had a high reactivity towards carbon dioxide and a high content of volatile matter, and that occupied a large volume fraction. High liq'uid-state reactivities were observed for reducing agents occupying a large volume fraction and having a Iow degree of graphitization.

The density used to covert volume to tons is critical in determining the real in-situ tonnage of Mineral Resources. However, the methods used to determine density and the use of different technical terms are seen to be inconsistent throughout the industry. Probably the best discussion addressing the determination of density was presented by Lipton (2001). This paper does not try to replicate this excellent work, but rather to review current industry practice and present a comparison of the approach to density in public reporting. Some of the technical terms used in reporting and the common methods applied are also discussed.

Rotary kilns are used for a variety of mineral processing operations. Hatch makes use of a kiln model developed from first principles to evaluate designs for its clients. This tool has been applied to a variety of pyrometallurgical applications. This paper illustrates the application of numerical optimization techniques in combination with the kiln model in the interrogation of a generic iron-ore reduction process. The fundamental modelling concepts are explained, followed by a description of the optimization approach. The results show how the combination of the two methods, with modern computing power, can generate a large number of viable design and operating candidates.

The recovery of gold, uranium, and pyrite from accumulated residues at mines in the Orange Free State is adversely affected by the presence of pyrophyllite, which is naturally floatable and must be prevented from floating with the desired constituents by the use of a mica depressant, and of thucholite (uraniferous kerogen), which contains significant quantities of uranium and gold but does not float readily in the presence of a mica depressant. In laboratory tests on these residues, the use of a mixture of MIBC (methyl isobutyl carbinol) and paraffin in addition to the suite of reagents normally used was found to increase the gold recovery substantially, but the sulphur grade was lower. The recovery of thucholite also increased considerably, but the proportion of uranium associated with this mineral was small. Plant trials, which are continuing, have been encouraging, indicating an increase in the gold recovery of 4,6 per cent.

The gravity method is often applied in mining-related scenarios such as geological and mineral exploration, detecting subsurface cavities and voids (“receptacles”) that may become sinkholes, siting of surface structures, fault-mapping, and more. It is also widely applied in geotechnical engineering to map subsurface karst profiles and to detect subsurface cavities, such as can occur in open pit mines. While it is widely acknowledged that, compared with other available geophysical methods, this method is the most applicable to the karst profiling problem, survey geometries applied in the field are often far from optimal. The gravity surveying specifications prescribed in SANS 1936 omit some key requirements for optimal survey outcomes, and this paper is intended to fill those gaps. The authors have seen scopes of work that require only a few measurements over the footprint of a proposed structure, indicating a lack of understanding of the nature of the gravitational field. A single gravity measurement is subject to the camouflaging effects of several influences, many of which can be larger than the anomaly caused by the subsurface density variation itself. Papers in the body of literature show an awareness of the need to map the regional field so that it can be subtracted to unmask the residual gravity anomaly, but rarely do they examine how instrument sensitivity governs the size of detectable anomalies or discuss how a detailed terrain correction can be instrumental for isolating faint targets. This paper aims to explain how to apply the gravity method correctly to mining and geotechnical problems, specifically in the detection of subsurface cavities. It discusses various factors to assist with optimising the acquisition of gravity data and its processing so as to maximise the practical value of gravity surveys.

Recovered activated carbon fines result from processing of ore and concentrates via cyanide leaching and sorption of valuable metals on carbon at gold-mining plants. This intermediate product is characterised by the particles sized smaller than 0.6 mm and gold grade up to 300-500 g/t. Processing of carbon fines with recovery of valuable metals is not available at many plants due to the lack of optimal technology. The paper describes the testwork and development of an efficient technology to process carbon fines with the recovery of valuable metals into the target gold alloy. This innovative technology involves pelletising of fine activated carbon particles using an organic binder, drying and further firing of pellets in a grate fired furnace at 800-900 °С. The produced ash is subject to sintering with sodium nitrate and hydroxide at 600-700°С. The sintered ash is then leached in water. The insoluble residue containing gold and silver is removed by filtration, dried and smelted to produce gold alloy. Water solution containing sulphur and arsenic is subject to detoxification. Processing of recovered carbon fines according to the developed technology implies the use of standard full-scale equipment. The offered method to treat gold-bearing carbon fines was patented by the Eurasian Patent Office. "The management of outlier grades in positively skewed gold distributions is a contentious issue. Incorporating outliers in standard ordinary kriging (OK) estimation procedures in a way that honours the data without smearing extreme grades into surrounding areas has been problematic. Cutting or capping of outliers to mitigate their influence in estimation techniques is common practice, while methods that manipulate the OK system of equations fail to honour the data. We propose a method of post-processing of kriging weights that provides realistic OK estimates and mitigates smearing without manipulating kriging equations or changing the original grades. The method requires that the data is not clustered, is approximately equally spaced, and is of the same support. Positively skewed data is ordered on attribute grade and nonlinearly transformed to a Gaussian histogram of categorical bins whose frequency is based on their likelihood of occurrence and location in the sample distributions. Factors that restrict kriging weights are calculated by dividing the percentage frequency of data in each bin by the percentage frequency of data in the bin with the highest frequency. Restriction factors applied to the kriging weights in the OK estimation restrict the range of influence in proportion to their probability of occurrence in the distribution. Smear reduction post-processing is easy to implement and addresses issues arising from negative kriging weights while considering the spatial location of samples, the sample grades, and their probability of occurrence. The method mitigates both smoothing and conditional bias.IntroductionOutliers are sample observations that deviate considerably from the standard or expected (Hawkins, 1980). These deviations can be high or low in grade depending on the distribution. The presence of outliers in a mine sampling campaign could provoke mixed reactions. Mining engineers might view high-grade outliers as a promise of achieving higher grades, while the geostatisticians view outliers as affecting the accuracy and precision of the overall estimate, among other issues. Having identified outliers, the geostatistician must decide how to account for their presence and treat them so that true underlying estimates are not distorted. Advanced knowledge of the deposit allows the geostatistician to identify and treat outliers acceptably, especially where samples are limited in number and the true grade distribution is uncertain. If ignored, or treated incorrectly, outliers are likely to lead to smearing of extreme grades into the surrounding estimates, thereby steering regions towards potential under- or over-estimation."

"The localized uniform conditioning (LUC) technique was proposed by Marat Abzalov in 2006. The technique converts conventional uniform conditioning (UC) grade-tonnage curves into single grade values attached to each smallest mining unit (SMU). This is achieved by ranking the SMUs within a panel in increasing order of their grade (based on the direct kriging of SMUs). This ranking is then used to localize the conventional UC grade-tonnage curves for each panel by dividing them into classes and computing their mean grades, which are assigned to the SMUs. The quality of this localization process will depend heavily on the validity of the grade patterns predicted by the direct kriging of the SMUs. Abzalov noted that where the distribution of data available for the direct kriging of the SMU is characterized by strong short-range variability, the advantages of using the LUC approach may be more limited. Consequently, a study was undertaken to determine how valid the predicted grade patterns of a typical Birimian-style gold deposit (with high nugget effect and strong short-range variability) might be expected to be. This was determined by comparing the direct SMU kriging ranking (based on sparse data) with the grade control model ranking (based on close-spaced data and the best available estimate of the deposit). The results showed a satisfactory correlation between these rankings and it was concluded that, although the grade patterns predicted by the direct kriging of the SMUs may be less meaningful for deposits exhibiting strong short-range continuity, there is nevertheless a convincing relationship with the actual (or best available) rankings. Therefore, the LUC technique is still considered to be useful for this style of deposit. The Moab Khotsong Metallurgical Complex comprises a gold recovery circuit (Noligwa Gold Plant) and a uranium recovery circuit (South Uranium Plant). The metallurgical complex employs the reverse leach technology for the recovery of uranium; specifically, uranium extraction prior to gold using acid leaching processing. The inherent uranium species in the ore are uraninite, coffinite and brannerite. The slurry that has been subjected to the uranium leach is further subjected to solid-liquid separation to separate the uranium in a solution through counter-current decantation and the solids (solids carrying all the gold), which are repulped and returned to the gold plant for gold processing. The uranium leaching process is critical to the uranium playing a pivotal role as a value adding by-product to the gold operation. The benefit of adopting this reverse leach process, for improved gold recovery, is that it exposes gold particles occluded within the uranium matrices and avails them for cyanidation. However, the drive for operational efficiency in uranium extraction must be weighed against the incremental operating cost against the backdrop of depressed spot uranium market prices. Over the years, efforts were directed at maintaining the benefit of extracting uranium to enhance gold recovery and simultaneously, optimising the operating cost model for the uranium operation to remain relevant to the gold operation. The aim of this paper and the corresponding presentation is to give an account of the uranium processing optimisation journey embarked on over the years; namely, the operational tradeoffs made in the process of ensuring that uranium continues to add value to the gold operation. These challenges were faced while striking a fine balance between processing cost and operational efficiencies against the prevailing depressed uranium spot market prices. Mineralogical- and laboratory tests conducted form the support basis for the results and observations articulated in the paper. "Penetration of matte into tap-hole bricks causes detrimental refractory wear, which can lead to furnace breakouts. The ability of the tap-hole clay to form a protective layer on the brick, thereby limiting matte penetration was investigated by examining the interaction between platinum group metal (PGM) matte, tap-hole clay, and alumina-chrome refractory bricks on a laboratory scale.Samples containing clay and brick as well as samples containing clay, brick, and matte were heated to different temperatures to establish the clay-brick interaction and the extent of matte penetration. The greatest degree of physical contact between the brick and clay was achieved at curing temperatures of 600°C. Poor clay-brick contact was observed in the sample that was heated to 900°C.Matte displaced the clay in the clay-brick-matte sample that was heated to 1350°C, with significant matte penetration into the brick. Less matte penetration was observed when the clay-brick-matte sample was heated to 1500°C. Less matte penetration was also observed in the claybrick- matte sample in which the clay and brick were pre-baked at 800°C, and the sample then reacted with matte at 1350°C. IntroductionFloatation concentrate from ore from the eastern Bushveld Complex of South Africa, specifically the Platreef, Merensky, and UG2 reefs, forms the feed to the Polokwane platinum smelter (Hundermark, De Villiers, and Ndlovu, 2006). The ore from the UG2 Reef has a high chromite content, which requires high operating temperatures (1500–1700°C) to avoid chromium spinel build-up in the furnace hearth. These high operating temperatures lead to matte superheats in the vicinity of 500– 600°C, which put increased demands on the refractory materials (Nelson et al., 2005).Upon tapping, the matte moves through the tap-hole, which consists of an aluminachrome refractory brick-lined tapping channel (Hundermark, De Villiers, and Ndlovu, 2006). The flow of molten matte is stopped by the injection of tap-hole clay to form a plug in the tap-hole. The tap-hole clay hardens and strengthens during curing to obtain the required hardness and refractoriness against penetration, corrosion and erosion (Nelson and Hundermark, 2014)."

A kinetic model framework for single particle kinetics in combined diffusion and adsorption processes is presented. The framework applies to the general case in which both diffusion and the adsorption reaction play important roles in determining the overall rate in processes where the migrating species can both adsorb and accumulate. The technique, which should be applicable to a wide range of reaction mechanisms, consists of an iterative integration procedure for the coupled diffusion and reaction equations. The case of a reversible linear adsorption reaction rate is developed. In order to verify the technique as a legitimate method of model development, an analytical solution for the identical case is derived and compared to the numerical solution. Excellent agreement exists between the two solutions.

Anglo Platinum have perceived a need to increase the rate of reef development both for new mechanised stoping technology and on conventional new developing mines. The Research and Development Division of Anglo Platinum therefore initiated an experimental reef raise project with a tunnel boring machine (TBM) at Bafokeng Rasimone Platinum Mine (BRPM). The scope of the trial was for the boring of a reef raise 340 metres in length on the Merensky Reef. The boring phase of the trial took place over six months and the average rate of penetration of the TBM was 0,47 metres/hour. TBM utilisation was 22%. The TBM used in the trial was a Jarva MK6 manufactured in 1972 and its design with its backup system was not considered to be an ideal machine for reef development. However it was the intention of the trial to prove the concept of developing with a TBM on reef. In this respect the trial was unequivocally a success. There were many problems and long delays did occur during the boring phase. Nevertheless there is every confidence that a new TBM can be designed specifically for this type of work that will achieve high rates of advance up to (say) 400metres/month and with a more flexible steering system in order to negotiate reef changes. It can therefore be expected that TBMs will be used in the future for reef development on South African platinum mines.

The fracturing and movement of rock that occurs in the vicinity of a stemmed borehole charge in open pit mining operations are described by examining the effects of the emitted stress waves – shock and elastic – and the expansion of high-pressure detonation product gases. Three principal modes of momentum transfer to fractured rock are identified, all linked to gas expansion work. This work can be delivered radially (burden), axially (stemming), and in the collar zone (cratering). Flyrock is generated under unusual combinations of blast parameters and rock properties. Although infrequent and seldom predictable, the generation of flyrock can nonetheless be interpreted and modelled in terms of the principal mechanisms of rock projection described in this study. The physical processes underlying these principal mechanisms are identified and will permit the development of predictive models for flyrock velocities.

The production of precipitated silica in the United States is about 145,000 tons of SiO2 and its prices vary significantly (from $ 1 to $ 4.5 per kg) depending on the area of its application. One of the most important parameters is its specific surface characterising dispersion (particle size and shape, presence or absence of pores), at a certain value of which the material acquires new properties and quality. At present, a technology has been developed for processing slag from phosphorus production to produce precipitated silica (‘white soot’) with a high specific surface and the possibility of extracting valuable components such as rare-earth metals (REMs) into a product enriched with them has been shown. However, the content of impurities in the deposited silicon dioxide, such as aluminum and iron, is above acceptable limits and may affect the quality of the final products. Therefore, along with the structure and specific surface, a very important characteristic of ‘white soot’ is the chemical purity of the material. In turn, calcium oxide occupies a significant share in the concentrate of rare-earth metals, which affects the content of ΣREMs oxides, which does not exceed 17.3 %. The low content of a valuable component may affect the feasibility of further processing. For the most complete utilisation of phosphorus slag, the authors propose a method for their acid processing, which allows for minimising the conversion of impurities to finely divided silica and collective concentrate, which will improve the quality of these products. Mineral royalties are one of the oldest forms of mining taxation, and were initially introduced to extract economic rents from mining. Over time, the royalty regime has become more complex as it was identified as an important policy instrument that can achieve more multi-faceted outcomes. Such a multi-tiered approach in the use of the royalty instrument is also the case with South Africa. With South Africa’s new mineral royalty regime now in place for ten years, it is perhaps time to assess its impact and effectiveness. To carry out this assessment, an econometric evaluative study was undertaken using four major commodities in South Africa, namely gold, platinum, iron ore, and coal. The study explored five different policy options for government to consider and tested them to determine the most favourable one that will realize the regime’s policy objectives. After the assessment, two major options stood out. Hence, this paper seeks to highlight which of the two options is the most favourable for consideration by policymakers. Based on that study, we find that the current structure is effective, but also recommend that the factors in the formula for refined minerals be ‘modified’ to reduce the capped profitability ratio from the current 60% to 30% and the maximum royalty rate for refined minerals from 5% to 3%. The minimum rate of 0.5% during times of depressed mineral prices and no or low profitability will not be affected.

A Special General Meeting of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy was held at Kelvin House, Johannesburg, on Wednesday, 20th August, 1986. Mr H.E. James (President) was in the chair and declared the meeting open at 15h45. Background The Chairman explained that the meeting had been called to consider a number of amendments to the SAIMM constitution. The proposed changes had been set out in detail in a document that had been mailed to all members on 4th July, 1986. He then briefly reviewed the background to the proposals, which is outlined in the Preface to the Annual Report (page 357 of this issue). The Chairman added that the Executive Committee of SACPE at its meeting on the 8th August, 1986, had resolved that the proposed amendments to the SAIMM constitution did comply with the requirements of Regulation RI525 dated 17th July, 1981, regarding the recognition by SACPE of a society as a Professional Engineering Institute.

The exploration of deposits generates geological data which are suitable for creating a preliminary tectonic and stratigraphic model. Linked with the topographical map and analysis data from exploration drillings, this information forms a numeric representation of the deposit. The following example demonstrates an expert system which connects chemical quality requirements and quarrying criteria, and develops a quarrying strategy based on the calculated model. Additional constraining factors like process technology, quarrying methods, landscape protection regulations, etc. are included. The goal is to guarantee a long-term, homogeneous material flow from the quarry at acceptable production costs - even in the case of an extraordinarily inhomogeneous deposit. In order to fulfil this requirement it is necessary to consider a large number of rules, criteria and instructions which can be structured as an expert system and programmed with LISP at a comparably low cost. The chosen strategy is not necessarily final, but can be changed any time by altering or varying the framework of conditions. The output consists of a block-working sequence which best satisfies the set requirements for appropriate points of quarry opening.
