One of the consequences of large-scale opencast mining for coal is the disposal of an enormous volume of overburden material that needs to be removed. With the enlargement of opencast mines and associated high stripping ratios, the volume of overburden extraction is rising. Overburden from the initial mine cut has to be necessarily dumped outside the mining area until enough void is created inside the mine for back-filling operations. The quantity of overburden placed outside the mining area normally varies from 10% to 30% of the total overburden removal. The stability of these dumps placed outside the mining area is of prime importance from the point of view of smooth operations of the mines and safety of persons in and around the dumping area. Owing to increasing pressure on land use, mine operators do not have any other option other than to place the waste dumps very near to the surface edge of the pit, which may lead to failure of the topsoil benches of the working pit. This study identified major controlling parameters that influence a stable but economic combination of height and slope angle of external dumps located close to the edge of an open coal pit.

"The coal strength parameter is used in operations such as the selection and design of mechanical excavators and coal crushing/grinding equipment. However, coring or cutting prismatic specimens from coal for the standard strength tests is difficult, and sometimes not possible. For this reason a method for the indirect determination of coal strength from easy tests would be useful. In this study, the predictability of coal strength from the needle penetration test was investigated. This is a very easy and practical test method. Point load and needle penetration index (NPI) tests were carried out on coal specimens from Çayirhan coalfield in Turkey. The point load indexes were converted to the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) values by using the general conversion factor. The UCS and NPI values were evaluated using regression analysis. A strong linear relationship was found between the two parameters. The conversion factor for the UCS-NPI ratio is 0.35 for the tested coal samples. It is concluded that the UCS of coal can be predicted from the NPI.IntroductionKnowledge of coal strength is important for the selection and design of mechanical excavators and coal crushing and grinding equipment. Therefore, coring or cutting prismatic specimens from coal for the standard strength tests is difficult, and sometimes not possible. For this reason, a method for the estimation of coal strength from easy tests would be useful.The needle penetration test is a nondestructive index test that is applicable both in the field and the laboratory and does not require any special sample preparation. Rheological measurements on pulps from South African gold mines by G. s. HANSFORD, Ph.D. (Pennsylvania), M.Sc. (Cape Town), C. D. LEVY, B.Sc. (Eng.), and J. W. DE KOCK, Ph.D. (Cantab.), B.Sc. (A.I.C.) (Visitors) A method is described for the determination of the rheological parameters of a fast-settling slurry with conventional viscometric measuring equipment. The effect of concentration, temperature, and pH on these parameters is investigated. The results agree with those obtained by previous workers using different viscometers, but this method allows a more detailed characterization of all the properties. From a literature survey, two semi-empirical equations were found that allow the effect of concentration, temperature, or pH on the rheological parameters to be correlated.

"A mineral resource constitutes the principal underlying asset of a mining company, and must be exploited and managed in such a way that maximum value is derived from it. Various asset management frameworks applicable to physical assets are available. This paper focuses on the extension of an asset management approach, particularly the Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) 55 asset management framework and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 55000 series of standards, to mineral assets. It is concluded that PAS 55 and the ISO 55000 series of standards can be extended to manage mineral assets, resulting in an integrated approach to sustainably optimize value from the company’s mineral assets. The benefits include improved returns on mineral assets, maximum mineral asset utilization, creation of an organizational culture focused on quality and continuous improvement, and assurance to stakeholders that the mineral assets are being efficiently managed over their entire life-cycle. In the context of this paper, a ‘mineral resource’ refers to both Resources and/or Reserves as classified by the SAMREC Code. IntroductionMining involves the extraction of valuable mineral resources from the Earth’s crust. A mineral resource is unique among natural resources in the sense that it is a wasting asset, which means that its value depreciates continuously with extraction. In addition, it is often impaired from time to time as commodity price changes (Macfarlane, 2011a). Since a mineral resource is a wasting asset there is a single opportunity available to optimize value from its extraction. Mine planning involves identifying a strategy to exploit the mineral resource in a way that maximizes value at an acceptable risk level throughout the life of mine (LOM). This optimum extraction strategy changes as economic conditions change, particularly commodity prices, as well as with improvements in orebody knowledge as mining progresses. It is the mineral deposit that competitively distinguishes two different mines and dictates the location of a mine; hence the adage ‘the orebody dictates’. Therefore, a mineral resource is the primary tangible asset possessed by mining companies and must be managed in such a manner that maximizes its value at an acceptable risk level (Macfarlane, 2011a)."

This study investigated the corrosion rates of various steel types and coatings used for friction rock stabilisers in a deep-level gold mine under diverse underground environmental conditions. Testing was conducted in situ within ramps, intake airways, and exhaust airways, and through simulated laboratory experiments. Results revealed that environmental variations significantly influence the corrosion performance of different materials and coatings. Duplex coatings, made up of galvanised steel with an organic paint layer, demonstrated the highest corrosion resistance. Zinc-based coatings provided moderate protection, while 3CR12 stainless steel and uncoated S420 carbon steel exhibited comparatively poor resistance under both aqueous and atmospheric conditions.

An improved methodology is presented for assessing the economic feasibility and effectiveness of recycling MgO-C and Al2O3-MgO-C refractory bricks, which are widely used in the steelmaking industry. Since approximately 28 Mt of refractory bricks are discarded each year, it is logical to recycle them. When furnaces and ladles are relined, the spent refractory bricks become mixed up, and need to be sorted before recycling. This study examined the use of a hand-held X-ray fluorescence analyser (HH-XRF) to distinguish between spent oxide-based and oxide-carbon-based refractory materials, with special emphasis on spent MgO-C (MC) and Al2O3-MgO-C (AMC) bricks. HH-XRF analysis was conducted on 18 oxide-carbon refractory bricks as well as on MgO-chromite and bauxite-based refractories. X-ray diffraction, reflected light optical microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy were used to characterize the MgO-C and Al2O3-MgO-C bricks to confirm the accuracy of the HH-XRF analyses. This study also underlined the importance of calibrating the HH-XRF analyser for the refractory bricks to be sorted. The HH-XRF was successful in distinguishing between the different oxide-carbon-based refractory bricks both before and after cleaning. This result is important as it proves that HH-XRF provides a method whereby spent MC and AMC bricks can be sorted quickly and reliably.

Projects or project-orientated approaches have become a common form of work in nearly all sectors of economies. This has led to concepts such as ‘projectified’ and ‘project orientated’ organizations. By defining projectification of a company, industry, or economy as the share of project work in total work, one can reasonably determine the impact that project management, and by default projectification, has had on that company, industry, or economy in terms of staff optimization and allocation. This paper presents the results for such a projectification study of the South African mining industry. This sector has long been a significant contributor to the country’s economy from a gross value added (GVA) and employment point of view. Understanding the impact of projectification and the project management way of work on this industry may potentially add significant value to both the mining and project management knowledge areas. We show that although the mining industry is considered by some to operate in archaic ways, the level of projectification has increased over time, and now represents approximately one third of all work conducted.

This paper presents a detailed and systematic approach to metallurgy diagnostics using an integrated novel gold deportment technique for complex copper-gold and refractory gold ore bodies. This uantitative gold deportment for these complex ore bodies is a challenging task due to reasons such as lower grades, high variability of visible and invisible gold content in different sulphides and iron oxide phases, significant presence of disseminated and composite carbonaceous matters along with associations of various copper sulphide phases. Gold mostly occurs as "invisible gold" (sub-microscopic gold) as solid solution or as colloidal-sized particles in different sulphides and other phases. The dominance of invisible gold and presence of highly preg-robbing and finely disseminated carbonaceous matter adversely affects gold recovery in flotation and leach circuits. Studies were initiated on various complex ore deposits and also on samples representing various process streams. Some case studies are presented in this paper to demonstrate the value of a high confidence gold deportment methodology in developing insights for problem diagnostics and to identify opportunities for metallurgical improvements. A systematic and holistic approach involving different fields of expertise is critical for successful development and delivery of solutions for complex ore bodies. South Africa has two main platinum reef deposits, namely the Merensky reef and the UG2 reef. These reefs are currently mined using traditional drilling and blasting methods. Mechanized cutting could potentially enable continuous mining, which would offer significant advantages. This would require thorough understanding of the cutability of the rock. To explore this, a linear cutting machine was developed to conduct laboratory scale cutting tests. This work describes the development and commissioning of the cutting machine using sandstone, as well as subsequent characterization tests on UG2 reef samples. UG2 reef has large variability in strength on a millimeter scale. This introduces uncertainty in the test results due to added variance from one cut to the next for the same UG2 reef sample. Another problem is the variability in rock properties of the UG2 reef, when testing samples from different mines. The cutting tests led to fine fragmentation, which is known to be a significant problem for cleaning operations in underground stopes and warrants further research. A finite element method simulation of the rock cutting was conducted using ANSYS LS-DYNA and the continuous surface cap model to simulate rock cutting in the UG2 reef. It was found that it is possible to use LS-DYNA with the continuous surface cap model to model rock cutting of UG2 reef and get acceptable results, but the user must calibrate the model parameters using the experimental results. Therefore, the model is only fit for one set of cutting parameters and further work is required to generalize results.

"Successful development of projects or life-of-mine strategies requires an understanding of the relative sensitivity of value drivers such as grade, tonnage, energy costs, direct operational costs, and recoveries. For example, the results could vary significantly depending on the grade strategy, given a specific orebody amenable to open pitting.Pit optimization is a very powerful tool widely used in the industry to determine the pit shell with the most attractive value potential. Based on the input parameters utilized, the pit optimization process determines the stripping ratio, mineable reserves, and pit shape, and effectively calculates a cut-off grade, assumed to be the optimal cut-off grade.Once the initial pit optimization process is completed, the need may arise to align the optimization results with the company strategy by further optimizing other criteria, such as maximizing short-term cash flow. This paper describes and discusses the selection of an alternative cutoff grade as a strategic intervention. It involves changing the cut-off grade, effectively increasing the head grade to gain a strategic advantage aligned with the company strategy, with a clear understanding of the financial value impact. With this knowledge, it is clear that pitoptimization establishes the basis for future analysis and refinement.IntroductionIt is common for companies to select the optimal pit shell defining the mineral reserve without much further consideration. However, companies may consider various strategies to optimize the long-term value of the project or to optimize the short-term cash flow. Analysis of the entire life-of-mine value estimation process shows that the selection of a cut-off grade and other parameters should be based on careful analysis. Determining the optimal cut-off grade of ore at a different period during the life of mine to maximize the value is often one of the most difficult challenges for a company.A cut-off grade is the lowest grade that mining activities will target. As a result the average mining grade, which drives the value of a project, will always be higher than the cutoff grade applied.According to Bascetin and Nieto (2007) cut-off optimization is still not widely practised. Cut-off grade optimization is an effort to maximize the value of a project by understanding the capacity constraints in the mine, mill, and the market. At any point during the life of mine, any or all of the limitations on tonnage mined, tonnage milled, and product sold may be constraining the system. To ensure cut-off optimization is done correctly, the capacity constraints must be independent of the cut-off grade."

This investigation aimed to simulate the experiments performed by Nic Gay (Gay, N.C.1976. Fracture growth around openings in large blocks of rock subjected to uniaxial and biaxial compression. International journal of Rock Mechanics and Minining Sciences and Geomechical Abstracts, vol. 13. pp. 231-243) on fracture growth around openings in blocks of rock subjected to uniaxial and biaxial compression, using the Elfen discrete element code. The results of the physical experiments indicated a number of trends that were successfully replicated in the numerical simulations, including crushing ahead of the face, the formation of a sub-vertical tensile fracture at centre-span, the formation of groups of fractures originating from the crushed face zone, the formation of large corner-to-corner fractures which precede sample failure, and linking of slot corner and sample corner fractures leading to sample failure. In addition, other features were apparent that were not reported by Gay. It is believed that these took the form of conjugate shear fractures (as reported by Gay in a previous paper) and other features that may have been altered or inhibited by the presence of pre-existing structure in the physical samples. It was found that the samples, though nominally made up of the same rock type, must have had significantly differing properties. The presence of pre-existing structures may have contributed to this discrepancy. Strain measurements from the physical experiments were reasonably well matched, except where the gauge lay directly in the path of advancing fractures.

Quality control interventions emanate from process upsets and trends that move product quality beyond the natural variation expected in a stable process. The ability to detect upset conditions and react in an effective manner protects both resource utilisation and compliance to specifications. Product quality control on coal processing plants traditionally relies on the reference (combined sampler and laboratory) system to measure product qualities. The introduction of online analyser (OA) technology, applied in different configurations, creates a second source of measurement information for control decision making. The case study was done on the primary sample stream of the final product stream at Exxaro’s GG7 and 8 plants, part of the Grootegeluk complex. It explores the OLA system’s ability to meet the OEM performance guarantee, perform equally to the reference system without analytical delay time, and assesses the effort to achieve this performance in a by-line analyser (BLA) configuration. In the paper, a conceptual comparison of the two measurement systems is done and the theoretical and practical comparison of measurement performance is discussed. Results demonstrate that the OA outperformed the OEM’s performance guarantee and achieved similar levels of performance to the reference system without the response delay. The large scale of cave mines leads to many challenges, including operational logistics and geomechanics design. In current practice, pillar stability assessment relies almost exclusively on stress analysis. However, stability is also affected by other factors including those related to operational aspects of the mining method, the effects of which are difficult to account for during the design stages. In this paper we present a case study of the application of a machine learning approach to evaluate the influence of these operational factors on pillar stability at the Chuquicamata underground cave mine in northern Chile. Due to the likely multi-factorial damage process leading to collapses and considering the different pillar conditions, a tree-based machine learning method was used and analysed to improve the understanding of the relative importance of the various contributing factors. Unlike stress analysis methods, it does not require any a priori knowledge of failure mechanisms, nor the calibration of associated controlling parameters. The proposed random forest model predicted pillar collapses with 80% accuracy despite limited samples to model from. The main contributing factors to collapses were found to be related to available pillar volume, cave front geometry, and time under abutment stress conditions. The effects and interactions of such factors were also studied, showing that careful and improved control over operational conditions can significantly reduce the likelihood of pillar collapses. These conclusions could not have been obtained from stress analysis alone, illustrating the complementary nature of conventional stress analysis and machine learning approaches.

"Previously, we upgraded and implemented two gamma activation assay (GAA) systems designed to analyse the gold content in raw ores at Zarafshan laboratory, Uzbekistan, and achieved a detection limit of less than 0.05 g/t under actual industrial conditions. Having started to design a fully modern, industrial GAA system for mining companies, this paper analyses the advantages, disadvantages, and special features of all major system components that can influence the sensitivity and accuracy of the analysis. The results of a study to optimize the detector geometry and sample size are presented and the performances of the linear electron accelerator, detector array, and sample transportation system of a modern, industrial GAA system for analysing gold, silver, and rare earth elements are considered. IntroductionGamma activation analysis (GAA) has considerable potential as a future replacement for traditional fire assay analysis in gold mining (Hoffman, Clark, and Yeager, 1998; Morse, 1977; Bourmistenko, 1986, 1981; Sammut, 2016; Tickner et al., 2017). The essence of GAA is to irradiate ore samples with high-energy gamma quanta generated by an electron linear accelerator (LINAC) and then to use a gamma spectrometer to detect the induced activity of the excited gold nuclei. The advantages of this method are discussed in detail elsewhere (Hoffman, Clark, and Yeager, 1998; Morse, 1977; Bourmistenko, 1986, 1981; Sammut, 2016; Tickner et al., 2017), where it is shown that GAA is uniquely suited to analysing ore samples when mining for gold, other precious metals, and accompanying elements.These advantages were realized in three industrial GAA laboratories that were commissioned in Zarafshan, Uzbekistan in 1977, in Magadan, Russia in 1979, and in Batagay, Russia in 1986 (Bourmistenko, 1986; Nii Tekhnicheskoy Fiziki I Avtomatiki, n.d). In 1989, a fourth industrial GAA laboratory was commissioned at a gold mine in Tommot, Russia. However, the project was subsequently halted due to economic reasons (Moshkov and Tjamisov, 2017). Currently, only the laboratory of the Muruntau mine in Zarafshan, Uzbekistan is in operation. The gamma activation method for gold determination is widely applicable at this mine owing to its high productivity and low cost of analysis. An outstanding aspect is the performance of more than one million analyses per year."

The results of development of technologies for flotation concentration of two types of complex beryllium ores are presented: beryllium-fluorite in apocarbonate metasomatites (Type I) and rare-earthberyllium in feldspar metasomatites (Type II). The researched samples of Type I ores contain a mineral complex that is difficult to separate by fatty acid flotation, including phenakite, bertrandite, fluorite, and carbonate minerals. The ores are characterised by an increased content of fluorite and carbonates. The sample of Type II ore contains such rare-earth minerals as bastnesite and orthite, and a beryllium mineral - cleiophane. The size of individualised grains of cleiophane does not exceed 0.04 mm, which significantly limits the possibility of extracting the mineral into the enrichment concentrates. For the Type I ores, a technological process for the extraction of fluorite using a phosphorus-containing reagent from the class of dialkylphenyl polyethylene glycol esters of phosphoric acid (DAPEGEPhA) has been developed. The use of DAPEGEPhA enables the production of a high-grade fluorite concentrate (95% CaF2). The production of commodity phenakite-bertrandite high-grade (10% BeO) flotation concentrate from the fluorite flotation tailings with using a fatty acid collector is based on binding calcium in the flotation pulp using soda, sodium hydroxide and sodium tripolyphosphate. The use of a combined collector based on fatty acids and DAPEGEPhA made it possible to produce a collective rare-earthberyllium- lithium concentrate with high REE extraction (88%) from the Type II ores. Fresh water conservation efforts and strict environmental regulations have forced the mining industry to reduce freshwater consumption and effluent discharge. This is achieved by recycling process water back to mining processes. The performance of flotation circuits depends on the pulp chemistry. When process water is recycled to flotation cells, organic and inorganic species that have accumulated over time alter the pulp chemistry. The presence of accumulating ionic species such as SO4 2- and S2O3 2- has been found to hinder the adsorption of collector ions onto mineral surfaces. Sulphide minerals are semi-conductors; electrochemical reactions take place on their surfaces. The adsorption of collectors onto mineral surfaces takes place via electrochemical reactions. This study, therefore, aims to investigate how the presence of accumulating ionic species at varying ionic strengths affects the adsorption of sodium ethyl xanthate onto chalcopyrite from an electrochemical perspective. Synthetic plant water comprised of single salts with varying ionic strengths was used. Rest potential measurements were conducted to investigate collector-mineral interactions in the presence of these ionic species. Microflotation tests were performed to determine whether the presence of these ionic species affects mineral floatability. Higher chalcopyrite recoveries were achieved in the presence of SO4 2- than in the presence of S2O3 2-. Rest potential measurements were found to successfully predict microflotation performance in the presence of the ions of interest. Klipspruit Colliery is experiencing coal losses, which leads to a negative impact on coal production and subsequently loss in revenue. This study aimed to identify the possible causes of coal losses in the No. 4 upper and lower seams. The objectives were to identify potential sources of coal losses through a literature survey, to identify areas where the coal losses occurred, to determine factors affecting coal losses, and to identify the most cost-effective methods to reduce coal losses. Highwall losses, top-of-coal losses, and coal edge losses were identified as the major areas of coal loss at Klipspruit. These losses were mostly attributed to the drilling and blasting practises of the pre-split, interburden waste, and the coal seams. Recommendations include re-visiting the current pre-split design and the tolerances adopted for the interburden and coal seam drilling and blasting design. It is furthermore recommended that Klipspruit implement a continuous improvement plan for the drilling and blasting and refresher training for the blasting crew and operators.

The results of an investigation evaluating whether an industrial plant, currently operating using sodium isobutyl xanthate (SIBX) as primary collector for sulphide minerals (mainly chalocopyrite), could adapt to operate using an alternate primary thiol collector without compromising plant and metallurgical performance. Initial laboratory scale flotation tests identified commercial dithiophosphate (DTP)-based and thionocarbamate (TC)-based collectors, that when blended, showed potential to replace the incumbent SIBX primary PGM collector. Industrial plant trail results show that there was no deterioration in recovery of 4E PGMs, even at a lower concentrate grade when operating the plant on the identified (DTP + TC)-based collector blend compared to SIBX. The effect on Cr2O3 content in the final concentrate was also found to be negligible. The (DTP + DTC)-based collector blend also showed promise in terms of plant adaptability in accommodating a new primary specialty collector blend. These observations highlighted the potential of replacing xanthate primary collectors with alternate thiol collector blends for PGM flotation.
