The concept of caring is in most cases confused with material needs and not psychological needs. By giving employees a job, most managers think that employees should be grateful and return the favour by being loyal, productive and working safely. Other managers hold the view that employees can be lucky to have a job. To show and demonstrate that management are caring for the safety of the workforce requires involvement, dedication and commitment. Obtaining the trust and respect of the workforce should be the main thrust of any organization because within trust and respect lie the secret of optimal safety performance. In the last 70 years, all the fatalities and serious injuries that occurred in the mining industry can be traced back to one thing, non-caring. The same safety non-compliances are still observed, reported and planned against as 70 years ago, and strange as it may sound, the same injuries occur the same way. The question could be asked: Does the mining industry need more risk assessments? More codes of conduct? More engineering. Or does the mining industry need more caring?

1. Book review • World mineral statistics 1974 to 1978. Production: Exports: Imports. London, H.M.S.O., Institute of Geological Sciences, 1980. (Reviewer: R. P. King) This edition is the third in a regular series prepared by the Institute of Geological Sciences. It is a useful compilation of statistics on the production, export, and import of fifty-eight different mineral commodities. Each mineral is listed by country, and a table is provided for the annual production, the annual imports, and the annual exports for each commodity included. However, some commodities are treated in considerably more detail; for example, aluminium and bauxite have tables under the following headings: Production of Bauxite, Production of Alumina, Production of Primary Aluminium, Exports of Bauxite, Alumina and Aluminium, Imports of Bauxite, Alumina and Aluminium. The information presented is the latest official information available from primary sources; the compilers have not relied on data from secondary compilations. This publication will be of considerable assistance to all who are concerned with the trading of mineral commodities and their production.

The paper covers many literature reports of processes using nitrogenous species as an oxidant for processing refractory gold ores, especially development in the pretreatment of refractory gold minerals by nitric acid. These processes include the high-pressure and the atmospheric-pressure oxidation methods. High-pressure oxidation processes are difficult to carry out, because they require high-capital cost autoclaves. Atmospheric-pressure oxidation processes are easier to manipulate, but complete absorption and reuse of NOx is difficult or multiple-stage absorption must be established for its reuse. "This article describes the re-engineering principles applied in the design of a personnel transportation system for the Bafokeng Rasimone Platinum Mine in the Rustenburg area of South Africa. It incorporates conveyor belt travelling, chairlift operation, and also includes consideration of proposed changes/modifications to the existing conveyor belt infrastructure.The purpose of the project was to identify, through a process of evaluation, the appropriate option and/or combination of transportation options that would be safe in terms of personnel transportation as well as cost-effective. Alternative measures for transporting personnel (not using belt riding) would have a significant positive spin-off, increasing the availability of the belt and thereby increasing production. This paper explores the feasibility of interventions that would improve safety through eliminating risk associated with personnel transportation as well as contributing towards improving the mine’s position on the cost curve.The design in consideration at the Bafokeng Rasimone Platinum Mine consists of two shaft systems, namely the North Shaft and South Shaft, each comprising twin decline shafts. One of the decline shafts is equipped with a conveyor belt for rock and personnel transportation, and the other with a winder for trackbound material transport. The conveyor belt has been used for personnel transportation since the commissioning of the shafts. The conveyor belt is equipped with platforms for personnel getting off and on the belt and a number of safety devices designed to ensure safety while travelling on the belt. Intensive training in the practical aspects of belt riding is given to every person, and unsupervised riding on the belt is permitted only once belt riding competence is demonstrated. Despite this, the safety results were poor, with 106 injuries between 2006 and May 2013. Fortunately, no fatalities were reported during this period.An investigation of alternative means for personnel transportation or engineered solutions to the current conveyor belt infrastructure in the safest, most effective, and most economical way was therefore needed. There was a major risk of safety-related stoppages being imposed following another belt accident/incident. This would prevent the mine from transporting personnel underground by belt and result in major production losses. From the commissioning of the Phase 2 shaft deepening project on both shafts, dedicated chairlifts have been used for personnel transportation as opposed to the conveyor belt installed in the Phase 1 area. The chairlifts have been in operation since 2004 and no chairlift-related incidents have been recorded thus far. According to safety statistics, it is clear that the chairlift is the safer method for the transportation of people in the shaft.To fulfil the objectives/scope of this study, it was recommended that both primary (new chairlift decline with infrastructure) and secondary options (modifications to the current conveyor belt infrastructure) be considered for implementation on both the North Shaft and South Shaft to reduce or eliminate accidents/incidents as a result of belt transportation. The associated capital expenditure would be approximately R200 million. Considering the future impact on the business as a whole, this would definitely be capital well spent."

Mr G. Y. Nisbet, Pr. Eng., holds a B.sc. (Min.) from the University of the Witwatersrand (1948) and a P.M.D. from Harvard University, U.S.A. (1966). On graduating, he was awarded the Chamber of Mines' Gold Medal. Professor D. G. Krige, holds a D.Sc. (Eng.) from the University of the Witwatersrand (1963) and a D.Ing. (H.C.) from the University of Pretoria (1981). Dr P. T. Wedepohl holds a B.Sc. (Hons.) from the University of the Witwatersrand (1953) and a Ph.D. from the University of Reading, England (1958).

"Ferrochrome (FeCr) is vital for the production of stainless and high-alloy ferritic steels, since it is the only source of new Cr units. FeCr production is an energy-intensive process. The pelletized chromite prereduction process is most likely the FeCr production process with the lowest specific electricity consumption (SEC), i.e. MWh/t, currently in operation. However, due to increases in costs, efficiency, and environmental pressures, FeCr producers are attempting to lower their overall energy consumption even further. Recently, it was proven that pre-oxidation of chromite ore prior to pelletization and prereduction significantly decreases both the SEC and lumpy carbonaceous reductants required for smelting. This paper presents the first attempt at conceptualizing the technoeconomic feasibility of integrating chromite pre-oxidation into the prereduction process. Financial modelling yielded a net present value (NPV) at a 10% discount rate of approximately R900 million and an internal rate of return (IRR) of approximatelyy 30.5% after tax, suggesting that the implementation of pre-oxidation prior to pellet prereduction may be financially viable. Sensitivity analysis indicated that the parameter with the greatest influence on project NPV and IRR is the level of prereduction. This indicates that the relationship between maintaining the optimum pre-oxidation temperature and the degree of prereduction is critical for maximium process efficiency. IntroductionStainless steel is a crucial alloy in modern society. Virgin chromium (Cr) units used in the manufacturing of stainless steel are obtained from ferrochrome (FeCr) – a relatively crude alloy consisting predominantly of Cr and iron (Fe) (Murthy, Tripathy, and Kumar, 2011; Beukes, van Zyl, and Ras, 2012). FeCr is produced mainly by the carbothermic reduction of chromite ore in submerged arc furnaces (SAFs) and direct current arc furnaces (DCFs) (Neizel et al., 2013; Beukes, Dawson, and van Zyl, 2010; Dwarapudi et al., 2013). The energy required to heat, smelt, and reduce the chromite ore to the metallized state is supplied by electricity (Pan, 2013). FeCr production is an energy-intensive process, with a specific electricity consumption (SEC) varying from 2.4 MWh/t to more than 4.0 MWh/t FeCr produced, depending on the process applied (Pan, 2013; Neizel et al., 2013). Daavittila, Honkaniemi, and Jokinen (2004) stated that the typical operational costs of FeCr smelters can be divided into four categories, i.e. chromite ore (30%), carbonaceous reductant (20%), electricity (30%), and other production costs (20%). This makes electricity consumption the joint largest factor that influences operational costs in FeCr production."

"Cyclic voltammetry experiments were conducted on copper and chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) in the absence and presence of ethyl xanthate, and compared to mass-balanced EH–pH diagrams. The results for copper duplicate those found in the literature and confirm xanthate chemisorption. However, the, results indicate that chalcopyrite oxidizes to chalcocite (Cu2S) and only afterwards is chemisorption observed due to small currents appearing with xanthate. This phenomenon suggests that the mineral's hydrophobicity is induced by more than dixanthogen and copper xanthate. Hydrophobicity was found to be pH-dependent over a range of alkaline conditions (pH 7–11) at narrow potentials (0 to –200 mV). An EH–pH diagram for chalcopyrite with xanthate is presented to illustrate the conditions under which chalcopyrite would be hydrophobic and thereby more thoroughly explain the results in the literature. IntroductionSulphide minerals are generally concentrated from ores by froth flotation, a physiochemical process that induces separation based on differences in hydrophobicity. In this process, a gas is bubbled into a slurry and the minerals that are hydrophobic (water-repelling) adhere to the bubbles and float to the surface while the hydrophilic (water-loving) minerals remain in the slurry. With sulphide minerals, the hydrophobicity is generally established in two ways. The first is by the addition of a collector, which is a heteropolar molecule with a reactive inorganic head group and an inert organic tail. Typically, the head group bonds with the sulphide mineral surface by adsorbtion either chemically (chemisorption) or physically (physisorption) or by complexing with atoms that solubilize somewhat at the surface (surface precipitation). These interactions leave the organic tail protruding from the mineral surface, thereby inducing hydrophobicity. The second method is by oxidation of the mineral surface to form a layer that is metal-deficient/sulphide-rich or comprised of elemental sulphur. Because the layer mimics naturally hydrophobic sulphur, this enables ‘collectorless’ flotation. Furthermore, this oxidation phenomenon adds an electrochemical dimension to the understanding of sulphide mineral flotation."

Ventilation and air-conditioning are some of the most energy-consuming processes in deep underground mining. Additionally, the energy consumption of these processes systematically increases along with the expansion of the mine. Therefore, proper energy efficiency assessment and consumption forecasts of these systems are particularly important in modern mines for ongoing tracking and planning of the likely costs. In the article, a short-term prediction model for surface air–conditioning stations is described. This model takes into account dependencies that were identified, based on the data from the supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems. These dependencies between the response value and the external conditions are then incorporated into the model. This way, for example, the ambient temperature or the total number of specific days of the week (with sometimes significantly lower or higher than the weekly average energy consumption levels) are included. Taking into account these dependencies, and e.g. forecasted average monthly temperatures allow us to include the seasonality of energy consumption in the presented model. In the article, a sample energy efficiency analysis of the A/C system based on an example of the KGHM Polish Copper Polkowice-Sieroszowice mine is performed. The results of the solution proposed in the article are then evaluated, and compared to the currently functioning, more basic forecasting methods. However, given the general nature of the dependencies used in the model, similar solutions could be used in other case studies.

In a flotation process of copper ore three factors were measured: copper grade in concentrate (β), copper grade in tailings (J) and recovery of copper in concentrate (e). The experiment was conducted by means of the Jameson cell. The factors influencing the quality of the process were particle size (d), time of separation (t), type of the collector (k) and dosage of the collector (s). The considered vector function was then [β(d, t, k, s), J(d, t, k, s), e(d, t, k, s)]. Optimisation achieved was based on determining the values of the adjustable factors (d, t, k, s). The goal was to obtain the highest possible values of functions β and e (maximum) and the lowest possible values of function J (minimum). To this purpose the taxonomic methods were applied. The Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recently conducted full-scale explosion experiments; these experiments evaluated the strength characteristics of various seal designs used for safely isolating worked-out areas in underground coal mines. Large-scale explosion tests were conducted within the multiple entry section of PRL's Lake Lynn Experimental Mine (LLEM) employing the only currently accepted test method endorsed by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) for seal design in American mines. These explosion tests are labor-intensive, expensive to conduct, and can interfere with other critical underground safety and health research programs conducted by NIOSH. Therefore, the PRL has developed an alternative seal evaluation method, based on a hydrostatic pressure loading concept, that can facilitate the in-situ testing of seals in an operating mine. Two chambers within LLEM and one within the Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) were used for hydrostatic pressure loading various seal designs. The results from tests in these chambers compare favorably with those from the large-scale explosion tests in the multiple entries. Preliminary size-scaling relationships for predicting the strength of standard seal designs as a function of entry size is also presented. In addition to testing seal designs at the required 20 psi static pressure level, the new facilities also allow for the determination of the seal's ultimate failure pressure. This new approach shows promise as an alternative evaluation method for improving mine sealing technologies which, in turn, will enhance the safety of the underground personnel.

The physicochemical properties of the complex electrolytes used in direct copper electrowinning are an important consideration for the development of a high-fidelity model of the process. Direct electrowinning electrolytes typically contain a high background of metallic impurities. The effect of metallic ions on the properties and accompanying change in the limiting-current density for copper reduction have been the subject of several studies. Although various empirical correlations have been published for describing the physicochemical properties of electrowinning electrolytes, the correlations are only applicable to a limited range of conditions and cannot be extrapolated without further validation. Consequently, in this paper we validated existing physicochemical property correlations for the full range of operating conditions applicable to direct copper electrowinning and developed a new correlation for predicting the associated limitingcurrent density for copper deposition. Following, we evaluated the benefit of using the validated correlations as a component of a dynamic electrowinning model.

During the period October 2003 to June 2004, a containerized optical sorting pilot plant was operated at Kloof Gold Mine on a waste rock dump. In this paper, we describe the test work and its results leading to the decision to operate this pilot plant. This paper presents the operational data and financial figures achieved during this project, in particular, for the month of June 2004 when the plant was run at full capacity on three shifts, 24 hour operation. These results are also extrapolated and presented to show the profitability of such an operation at today?s gold price levels and cost structure.

Pressure leach autoclave circuits are employed in the leaching of ores, concentrates, mattes, alloys and intermediates for the recovery of metals into solution. Once the metals are extracted into solution, the value metals can be recovered by hydrometallurgical means such as by purification followed by electrowinning, hydrogen reduction, pyrohydrolysis, crystallization and other unit operations. In many of these integrated flowsheets the pressure leach step is pivotal to the recovery of the value metals from the host material. Furthermore, the autoclave circuit invariably is a high capital cost component of the plant and an area that is carefully scrutinized when debottlenecking and capacity increases are being considered. This paper identifies a unique proven way of increasing the capacity of existing or new exothermic pressure oxidative leach autoclave circuits by as much as two or three times.

Iron ore pellet feed pressing has been one of the first and most successful applications of High- Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) in the minerals industry. Vale S.A. has been one of the pioneers in this application, currently with six HPGRs in operation in the pelletising plants of the Complexo de Tubarão (Brazil). In spite of the important advances in the technology, risks still exist when scaling-up the process from small-scale information. The present work takes advantage of the recent advances in the mathematical modelling of the HPGR performance, using the population balance model to evaluate the modified Torres and Casali model prediction in iron ore pellet feed pressing for different scales of operation. Results are presented that compare the HPGR performance in different operational scales for iron ore pellet feed pressing, demonstrating the confidence of this model-based approach for scale-up to full-scale HPGRs used in pressing iron ore concentrates. "The objective of the study was to determine the type and distribution of rare earth elements (REEs) in the phosphate flotation concentrate from the Esfordi flotation plant in central Iran, in order to understand their leaching behaviour. Samples of the concentrate were prepared and analysed using XRF, XRD, ICP, and EMPA. The Ce, Nd, La, and Y contents were 5608, 2227, 1959, and 679.7 mg/kg, respectively. The main REEbearing minerals in the concentrate are fluorapatite, monazite, and xenotime. Apatite is the chief mineral of the concentrate and the ratio of apatite to monazite is greater than 60. From EMPA analysis, monazite contains a much higher proportion of REEs than apatite, but more than 50% of the REE content of the concentrate is in apatite, as this is the main mineral constituent of the concentrate. During the leaching of REEs in the phosphoric acid production process, more than 99% of the total rare earth values report to the large amounts of phosphogypsum (CaSO4·2H2O) formed during the dissolution reaction. Accordingly, two process options are suggested for treating the Esfordi concentrate. In the first option, the concentrate is treated with 98% H2SO4 at 200–300°C. After digestion and water leaching, phosphorus and REEs are precipitated out of solution. In the second option, the concentrate is treated in a pre-leach stage. The process residue from the pre-leach stage is then subjected to acid digestion at elevated temperature for phosphoric acid production.IntroductionThe rare earth elements (REEs) comprise a set of 17 chemical elements in the periodic table, specifically the 15 lanthanides plus scandium and yttrium. REEs and alloys that contain them are used in devices such as computer memory, rechargeable batteries, cell phones, catalytic converters, magnets, fluorescent lighting, and many more (Krishnamurthy and Gupta, 2004). China supplies about 94% of the REE demand, with the remaining 6% coming from Russia and Estonia, the USA, India, Malaysia, and Brazil (Zhanheng, 2011). Increased industrial development in China has prompted the Chinese government to limit annual export quotas to approximately 35 kt of rare earth oxides (REOs), while non-Chinese annual demand is expected to reach 80 kt by the year 2015. This constriction of supply is being met by the development of many new rare earth mining projects, each of which has its own unique mining and processing challenges (Jordens, Cheng, and Waters, 2013). One of these projects is the Esfordi phosphate project, which is located in Yazd Province in central Iran. The concentrate from the Esfordi flotation plant contains 1.2–1.5% REEs."

The pipeline transport of paste, backfill or thickened tailings slurries is an important component of the tailings disposal process in many mines around the world. These mixtures contain significant fractions of fine (clay) and coarse (sand) particles, causing them to exhibit non-Newtonian flow behaviour and high frictional pressure gradients. There is often economic incentive to operate these pipelines in the laminar flow regime. Irrefutable evidence has shown that coarse particle settling can occur during the laminar flow of these slurries even when static settling tests show no indication of such behaviour. Previously, a ?rule-of-thumb? minimum frictional pressure gradient of ~1.5 to 2 kPa/m was suggested to ensure effective sand transport, based on the results of tests conducted using viscous Newtonian oils. In this paper, we examine the results of laminar flow tests of non-Newtonian, coarse-particle laden slurries conducted with pipeline loops of 50, 100, 150 and 250 mm in diameter. The results indicate that the ratio of the mean wall shear stress to the mean surficial particle stress is abetter indicator of laminar flow settling tendency than frictional pressure gradient.

Mining is a significant economic activity in most Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries, and mineral beneficiation has been identified, and controversially discussed as one of the possibilities for industrialisation. With many member countries being economically too small to muster the human and financial resources which beneficiation requires, the recently adopted Regional Mining Vision (RMV) envisages interventions at a regional level. An opportunity arose to ask industry role players to what extent the SADC appears to support regional beneficiation policy interventions undertaken by member countries, and what the challenges are in undertaking beneficiation regionally, as a complement to, or substitute for country-specific beneficiation policies. Twenty-five semistructured interviews were conducted with experts from SADC member countries during the 2019 Mining Indaba. Participants were divided on whether beneficiation should be carried out nationally or in the SADC region. While beneficiation could support value-keeping, key challenges were found to be infrastructure development (i.e. energy, water), scarce skills, access to technology and related costs, but also lack of free trade and movement. We submit that a more integrated beneficiation strategy for the SADC region, as is being developed through the RMV, would indeed be relevant in the future. Productivity is improved by increasing the ratio of output to input. In an operating open-pit mine, improving the productivity of heavy mining equipment (HME) enables the unit cost of production to be reduced. To optimize HME productivity, the Kolomela open-pit iron ore mine transitioned to an enhanced short-term mine planning (STMP) process that supports the application of a manufacturing-type operating model. At the core of the enhanced STMP process is a focus on integration across the open-pit mining value chain. The interdependencies between mining activities are highlighted and emphasized, thus ensuring that mining activities are synchronized. The improvements related to HME productivity were monitored from 2019 to 2020. The utilization of mining area in the Leeuwfontein pit improved from 71% to 90%, and the blasting frequency reduced by 14% while the average blast size increased by 17%. The distance travelled during shovel relocations between mining phases reduced by 16%, and the lost time associated with drills relocating reduced by 53%. These productivity improvements resulted in an 11% increase in the loading rate of the main waste shovel at Kolomela from 0.9 Mt/month in 2019 to 1.0 Mt/month in 2020. The enhanced STMP process can be adapted to other open-pit mining operations.

Since 2012, Ghana has been implementing local procurement regulations in the mining sector to broaden and deepen linkages between mining and other sectors of the economy. The regulations have been implemented in collaboration with the mining industry. This paper offers an in-depth analysis of how the local procurement regulations and related initiatives have been implemented so far. Primary data gathered with semi-structured interviews and secondary sources of data indicate a steady improvement in both in-country procurement and local manufacturing of inputs for the mining industry. There are, however, some challenges relating to tariff structure and support (financial and technical) for local suppliers and manufacturers to meet high standards and demands of the mining industry. This calls for a well-thought-out strategy and programme of activities to sustain and improve on progress made.
