ABSTRACT: In the south of the Island of Gran Canaria (Spain) there appear layers of swelling clays inside volcanic formations of a fonolitic type, down to depths as low as 500 m, with thicknesses of 1 to 3 m. Two tunnels (each of length 1,500 m) have been built in these zones (ignimbrites and swelling clays), work on which started in the ‘70s. The construction has been influenced by phenomena of expansivity and decompression. Presented below are the problems that arose, the field and indoor studies conducted and the numerical optimisation of the lining. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Im Süden der Insel Gran Canaria (Spanien) kommen im Inneren vulkanischer Formationen phonolithischen Typs in Tiefen von bis zu 500 Metern 1 bis 3 Meter dicke Blähtonschichten vor. In diesem Gelände aus Schmelztuff und Blähton begann man zu Beginn der siebziger Jahre, zwei Tunnel von jeweils 1.500 Metern Länge anzulegen. Die Bauarbeiten standen unter dem Einfluss von Dehnungs- und Dekompressionserscheinungen. Der folgende Text enthält eine Darstellung der aufgetretenen Probleme, der durchgeführten Feld- und Laborstudien und der numerischen Optimierung der Tunnelauskleidung. On a perforé deux tunnels (de longueur 1.500 m chaque un) dans cettes zones (igniumbrités et argiles gonflantes), chantier qui comenza pendant les 70’. La construction on a influencé pour des phénomènes d’expansivité et de décompression. Dans cette communication on présente les problèmes presentes, les études de chantier et théoriques realicés et l’optimisation numérique développé pour dimensionner le revêtement.

The Czechoslovak Scientific-Technical Institute has arranged the international conference 'Hornicka Ostrava' for four or five days at the end of October, 1969, as part of the preparation for the international 'Miners' Congress' on deep coalextraction in 1970. The keynote of the conference is 'New Techniques in coal mining,' and will be covered by five groups dealing mainly with: 1. New trends in the opening of mines, optimal parameters, projections, equipment, utilization of computers for economic analyses, etc. 2. Increase in efficiency of coal extraction in deep mines, technology, concentration, pressure control, optimization of material and coal transport. 3. A. W. S. Schumann The first reason for todays success lies in the very high standard which was set by our speakers today and I think that we owe a very special vote of thanks to Messrs P. M. C. Wilson, A. A. Oakes, M. J. Deats, A. C. Coetzee, R. E. Burnton and J. G. Ferguson. This, however, cannot account for the fact that there was a tremendous response even before anyone knew who was going to speak or what they were going to speak about. I suggest that the response was enthusiastic because people expected a more informal gathering with a greater opportunity for feedback, for an exchange of views and for questions and answers. The very popularity of the idea has defeated its own ends to some extent. This gathering is too big and many people must have been left with questions unanswered. Possibly one should arrange for a number of meeting places-there are many in the Chamber and the surrounding mining houses-and then have separate meetings in the morning with joint reporting session in the afternoon. Alternatively, we could have a symposium after the colloquium, using Webster's definition of a symposium as as 'a drinking party of merry fellows'. We all know that it is easy to discuss mining into the small hours. Obviously one cannot summarise todays papers and discussions, but I would like to make a few comments on technical matters and after that I would like to speak for a moment about what I see as major trends or tendencies which arise from discussions of this nature. Regarding the question of placing a village on a mine or away from a mine, I would mention that there is quite a body of literature on the adverse sociological effects on the development of children in any community in which the great majority of parents share the same occupation. It is something to be avoided if possible. We discussed the concept of the moving stockpile. If this is proved to be successful, it could save a considerable amount of money for Escom who could then avoid the construction of very large and costly staithes which are now regarded as parts of power stations. One does not see why both a moving stockpile and a staith should be necessary. By the way, speaking of Escom, I see that Mr Bob Scott is here; he has stopped pulling my leg by saying that we sell stone to Escom; perhaps someone has told him that if this is true, it must be the cheapest stone you can buy in this country. My next point relates to the use of epidiascope. It struck me again that this instrument which provides a visual image to accompany your message, can be very effective if it is properly used. These papers speak of a great deal of hard work which went into their preparation, and one really feels that the authors should have taken a few minutes more to prepare their drawings specifically for the epidiascope. There should be nothing on the drawing which is not necessary to illustrate a particular point and there should be nothing on the drawing which is not visible from the back of the hall. South African discard coal fines and K₂CO₃ blends were heated in a laboratory-scale rotary kiln to produce ashes for H₂SO₄ leaching tests. The optimized H₂SO₄ leaching conditions of 6.12 mol.dm³ (M) H₂SO₄, solid to liquid ratios 1:5 and 1:10, and 80°C for 8 hours were used. K₂CO₃ was added to increase the dissolution efficiency of K. The objective was to determine if the Al present in metakaolinite (Al₂O₃.2SiO₂), the Al, K, and Ti in the alumino-silicate glasses, and the Ti in rutile (TiO₂) in the ashes could be selectively dissolved in H₂SO₄. XRF results show that the ashes formed at 700°C dissolved more efficiently (87% Al, 89% K and 23% Ti) compared to the ashes formed at 1050°C. This can be attributed to the presence of Al₂O₃.2SiO₂, K₂CO₃ melt, K₂CO₃ remnants, KAl(SO₄)₂, and K-aluminosilicate glass in these ashes. XRD results indicate that the ashes prepared at 1050°C contained anorthite (CaAl₂Si₂O₈), microcline (KAlSi₃O₈), pseudomullite (Al₂O₃.SiO₂), and silicon spinel (2Al₂O₃.3SiO₂), which are either insoluble or only sparingly soluble in H₂SO₄. These minerals resulted in the lower dissolution efficiencies of Al and K. Based on the high dissolution efficiencies of Al and K for the ashes produced at 700°C, coal fines blended with K₂CO₃ could possibly be utilized as feedstocks for the production of aluminium(III), potassium(I), and titanium(IV) and a sulphate-containing leach liquor. Furthermore, the environmental issues and costs associated with the handling and disposal of large volumes of coal fines will also be resolved.

The production processes are described, and the properties of the two types are examined and compared. Guidelines are given for the selection of the correct grade of ferrosilicon for any particular application.

It is not uncommon for gold slurry ponds or screen oversize dumps to contain several different types of carbon-rich contaminants. These contaminants act as robbers of dissolved gold which has a detrimental effect during the downstream carbon-in-leach (CIL) or carbon-in-pulp (CIP) processes. With a renewed interest in the reprocessing of contaminated gold waste ponds and dumps, preconcentration of the feed to either the CIL or CIP process becomes important to maximise profits from these resources. An added advantage in removing these resources, which were once thought of as being uneconomical, is the availability of land that can further be rehabilitated for community development projects. For gravity separation, an example of suitable technology is the Reflux Classifier (RC), which can be used for the separation of materials of different densities and can be used as a pre-concentration step. In this project, a laboratory-scale Reflux Classifier was used to pre-concentrate a gold-bearing sample obtained from a waste dump situated to the east of Johannesburg, South Africa. The material had an average gold grade of 1.9 g/ton and a carbon content of 10%. This material was first fed to a semi-batch Reflux Classifier that was used to fractionate it into several different density intervals by varying the fluidisation water feed rate, followed by continuous runs at fixed water flow rates. The results showed that a cumulative gold recovery of 60%, carbon recovery of 85%, and mass pull of 41% was possible for a fluidisation water feed rate of 15 L/min, while a rate of 20 L/min resulted in a gold recovery, carbon recovery and mass pull of 83%, 92% and 79% respectively, which translated into a concentrate gold grade above the set target of 3 g/ton. Continuous operation at 20 L/min yielded an underflow stream with 84% gold recovery at a grade of 5.4 g/ton. Keywords: Reflux Classification, gold recovery

"This study examines the problems faced by open pit mine superintendents who make choices about how to direct their materials, either to the waste dump or to the mill. The paper explores the effects of introducing a 10% sampling error and a 0.9-times to 1.1-times sampling bias on positively skewed distributions for precious and base metals, negatively skewed distributions in the case of bulk commodities, and normal distributions as is the case for coal deposits. Parent distributions for each commodity were created on a 25 x 25 m grid using transformations of gold, iron ore, and coal data-sets, spatially based on a nonconditional Gaussian simulation. Ordinary kriging of grades for the three commodities into a 10 x 10 m grid provided the reference case against which the distributions with the sampling error and sampling bias for the commodities were compared. Imposing cut-off grades on the actual-versus-estimated scatterplots of the three commodities allowed the distributions to be classified into components of waste, dilution, ore, and lost ore. Ordinary kriging of values for each deposit type acted as the reference data-set against which the effects and influence of 10% sampling error and 0.9-times to 1.1-times sampling bias are measured in each deposit type. Indications are that the influence of error and bias is not as significant in gold deposits as it is in iron ore and coal deposits, where the introduction of small amounts of error and bias can severely affect the deposit value.IntroductionThe effects of poor sampling and the financial implications for mining companies, traders in mineral assets, and sellers of metal as dore or commodities is documented in a number of studies, the most notable of which is that by Carasco (2004). He examined the financial impact of poor sampling practices in the Chilean copper industry and found that finacial losses due to poor sampling amounted to hundreds of millions of dollars over the life of a mining operation. Holmes (2004) examined the effects of correct sampling and measurement as the foundations of metallurgical balances, and found that revenues from the sales of large iron ore shipments may be profoundly affected by poor sampling practices. In South Africa the way in which sampling of in situ gold-bearing reefs affects the mine call factor has been an ongoing study since the disparity between the estimation of gold in the reef and the actual gold bullion produced was noted by early investigators such as Beringer (1938), Jackson (1946), Sichel (1947), Harrison (1952), and a number of others."

Room-and-pillar mining is commonly employed for the extraction of rock salt in undergroundmines. Pillar stress is a major concern in these mines as it is directly related to stability and mineralrecovery. In this study a flat jack method was used to measure pillar stresses in three undergroundrock salt mines in Pakistan. The field work included determination of in-situ stress, in-situ elastic modulus, recording of field variables (pillar length and width, height and width of opening, opening width to height ratio, extraction ratio, and overburden height) and collection of salt block samples. The geomechanical properties of rock salt (uniaxial compressive strength, Young’s modulus, Brazilian tensile strength, and density) were also determined to estimate overburden stress, pillar strength, and factor of safety (both estimated and actual). It was found that the measured pillar stresses are proportional to the overburden stress values, with their magnitude ranging from 6.05 MPa to 11.97 Mpa, and the pillars were found to be stable. Regression analysis was performed to develop statistical models for in-situ stress and in-situ elastic modulus. Finally a quick guideline chart was developed to determine the suitable length of pillar for a given span and required level of safety.

ABSTRACT: The proposed paper is aimed at analysing the failure of a steep cliff slope that, in the past, was exploited for open pit mining operations. A volume of over 400,000m3 of gneissic aplitic rock was involved in the slope failure. An evaluation of possible failure mechanisms is given, based on a structural description of the rock mass, a mechanical characterisation and on computation methods. The block theory and limit equilibrium techniques for sliding and block toppling were applied and a comparison is given with the result obtained by using DEM models. RESUME: Le document proposé vise l’analyse des mécanismes de rupture d’une falaise qui a été intéressée dans le passé par une mine à ciel ouvert. Un volume supérieur à 400.000 m3 de aplite-gneiss a été concerné par la rupture de la falaise. Le document fournit une évaluation des possibles mécanismes de rupture, basée sur une description structurale de l’amas rocheu, une caractérisation mécanique et des méthodes de calcul numérique. L’analyse a été développée à l’aide de la théorie des blocs et de la technique de l’équilibre limite, soit pour le glissement que pour le basculement des blocs, et une comparaison avec le résultat obtenu par application des modèles DEM a été effectuée. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Die vorgeschlagene Arbeit zielt darauf ab, den Einsturz einer steilen Felswand zu analysieren, an der in der Vergangenheit eine Mine im Übertageabbau betrieben wurde. Der Einsturz betraf ein Volumen von über 400000 m3 an Gneis und Aplit. In der Arbeit ist eine Einschätzung des möglichen Mechanismus angegeben, der zum Bruch geführt hat, und sie basiert auf einer strukturellen Beschreibung der Felsmasse, einer mechanischen Charakterisierung sowie auf der Anwendung von Berechnungsmethoden. Angewandt wurden die Blocktheorie und die Methode der Gleichgewichtsgrenze für das Abrutschen und Kippen von Blöcken. Darüber hinaus wird ein Vergleich mit den Ergebnissen angestellt, die unter Verwendung von DEM-Modellen erzielt wurden.

SlamaThis session was devoted to the economic aspects of planning and scheduling. After Dr F. H. Deist had introduced the paper Aids to planning production in coal mines, Dr T. V. Falkie summarized the following formal contribution prepared jointly with Dr R. V. Ramani, describing the work that has been done at the Pennsylvania State University in the development of simulation programs for mine planning over the past 15 years:During the late 50's and early 60's, Monte Carlo simulators were developed to model continuous miner-shuttle car transport systems, track haulage systems, belt conveyor networks, etc. In the mid-60's attention was directed towards deterministic simulation of equipment performance, given the equipment characteristics and the system profile. In the late (10's all these systems (miners, shuttle cars, belts and trains) were integrated together to form a complete coal mine simulator and the program could predict the output potential of the system, given the mining dimensions, method and equipment employed. The actual sequence of coal-cutting operations is entered into the computer through the use of a special programming language which permits any type of mining configuration to be simulated. The simulator is hybrid in nature in that the shuttle cars, trains and belts are simulated deterministically, whereas rate functions with delay frequencies are entered for the continuous mining operations of sumping, shearing, fleeting, cleaning, etc. With suitable manipulation of the data, the program may be applied to all belt or conventional mining sections. Most of these simulators were developed through the assistance of grants from the Department of Mines and Mineral Industries of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and are available from the Coal Research Board of the Commonwealth,"

Recycling has become an important part of the lithium-ion battery (LIB) life cycle due to the growing demand for energy storage in applications like electric vehicles and renewable energy. Recycling spent LIBs provides a secondary source for strategically scarce metals, like lithium and cobalt, helping to reduce the environmental impact of LIBs. Organic acids have been proven to be effective lixiviants with the benefit of reduced environmental impacts, amongst which citric acid has shown to exhibit similar extraction performance when compared to mineral acids. Leaching LCO and NMC batteries with 1.5M citric acid and 2 vol.% H2O2 at 95°C, 20 g/L for 20 minutes achieved 93% Al, 90% Co, 96% Li, 94% Mn and 94% Ni dissolution. The strong chelating property of citric acid affects the separation of the metals, providing unique extraction opportunities. The first extraction uses 12 vol.% D2EHPA at a pH of 2.5 and O/A ratio of 2 to separate 96.4% Mn and 100% Al from the PLS in two counter-current stages. Stripping the loaded organic with 1.25M citric acid at an A/O ratio of 3 allows for up to 91% stripping of the manganese in a single stage. The second extraction then separates 96.5% Li from the PLS in three counter-current stages using 20 vol.% D2EHPA at a pH 5.5 and O/A ratio of 5. A sampling campaign carried out on the lead flotation circuit at Lakan lead-zinc processing plant demonstrated that the Pb recovery was only about 68-69%. Characterization of the Pb flotation tailing showed that 61.4% of the Pb is in the –37 μm size fraction, which is difficult to recover by flotation. Batch flotation experiments were carried out on a plant sample of the lead flotation feed and high-intensity conditioning (HIC) was used to improve flotation recovery. The results showed that increasing the collector conditioning time from 1 to 3 minutes significantly increases the Pb recovery from 42.5% to 57.3%. Further increases in conditioning time to 5 to 7 minutes decreased the Pb recovery. With a collector conditioning time of more than 3 minutes, due to the surface cleaning effect, increasing collector and frother dosage improved the flotation selectivity and recovery, even at higher collector dosages. The Pb recovery increased from 69.1% to 79.8% with increasing impeller speed from 600 to 1250 r/min. HIC increases the flotation kinetics and greatly improves the flotation recovery and concentrate grade.

Splaine, in opening the discussion on Mr Perlman's paper, asked whether the model, as fitted by data up to 1963, predicted the rise in the price of copper in 1967, and whether the model could be used to capitalize on short-term price fluctuations.Answering the second question first, Mr Perlman said that the horizon used is six months to one year. In the very short term the activities of speculators obscured the effect of the fundamental econometric variables. This effect, however, was removed if one moved to a longer term, say, quarterly. In 1963 the model had predicted a price rise in 1964 and 1965 and a drop in price in 1966. The rise in 1967 had been caused by a strike, and imponderables such as large strikes were difficult to include in the model since they were unpredictable. Model simulation can be used to show the effect of strikes on price and the effect of small strikes is small.Mr B. R. van Rooyen said that because models are both calibrated and tested on historical data a bias was introduced which gave rise to an overoptimistic estimate of the accuracy of the forecasts. To this Mr Perlman replied that there seemed to be no alternative to the use of historical data for calibrating and testing models, and thus little hope of avoiding the bias. A second point made by Mr. van Rooyen was that manage¬ment tended to be suspicious of complex models and that frequently more heuristic models were sufficiently accurate and preferable for investment decisions. He added that if management were not involved in the model building the econometrician might easily go astray, Mr Perlman replied that symbiosis between data analysts and users of the model was essential and that the experience of the practitioner must be reflected in the model.Mr M. R. Fuller-Good remarked that a clear understanding of future price trends was essential for effective capital planning, and asked, first, how one went from the compiled data on supply and demand to the determination of their effect on price, record, whether necessary data, for example, capacities, could be obtained timeously, and, third, when strikes restricted supply, whether stockpiling by consumers induced large price fluctuations."

Liquidus temperatures in the Cr-Fe-Si system in the composition range representative of ferrochromium-silicide produced in South Africa J. C. M. Wethmar, B.Se. (Eng.) Rand D. D. Howat,U B.Se. Strydom, M.Sc., Ph.D. Alloys in the composition range of chromium, 20 to 50 per cent, iron, 10 to 30 per cent, and silicon, 25 to 55 per cent, were subjected to both differential thermal analysis and the classical quench method so that the liquidus temperatures of ferrochromium-silicide alloys could be determined. The results are presented as liquidus curves on pseudo-binary sections at various ratios of chromium to iron and as liquidus isotherms in the ternary section.

The treatment of gold-plant tailings with ferrous sulphate to remove the cyanide is currently in use, on several gold plants. In some cases there is scope for optimization the process. The present work provides a detailed study of the reaction between cyanide and ferrous sulphate. Optimal conditions for the removal of total cyande required a ph of 5,.5 to 6,5 and an Fe:CN molar ratio of 0,5. Ferrocyanide ion is shown to be unstable In aqueous acidic solution, with rapid oxidation to ferricyanide, (Fe(CN) 6 ), and formation .of Fe(CN)5H2O3- at pH values below 4, The precipitate from the reaction between cyanide and ferrous sulphate consists mainly 01 Insoluble Prussian blue, Fe4[Fe(CNI&!.3,and IS shown to be unstable in the presence of alkaline solution, since it decomposes rapidly at pH values above 7 to form ferrocyanide, (Fe(CN)6 ), in solution and various insoluble iron oxides,

COLLOQUIUM The President welcomed everyone present and mentioned that this was the first of the Colloquia which are to replace the Institute's monthly meetings. He stressed that discussion at Colloquia would be completely informal and would not be recorded unless the contributor requested publication. In conclusion, he thanked the organising committee, the authors and the contributors, and introduced the author of the first paper. The following papers were presented:- 'The future development of the Iron and Steel Industry' by J. P. Coetzee (Published in the Journal March 1971). Among those who contributed to the paper were Dr Bleloch, Dr K. Gebhard, Dr Way and Professor Müller. The main point made by Dr Bleloch related to the reserves of coking coal and of coal for power generation this in country and he deduced that in South Africa we are critically short of coking coal. On the basis that 4 million tons per year of coking coal are consumed for our present steel production, over 16 million tons would be required to meet the anticipated expansion in steel output by A.D. 2000. This must be set against the grim forecast made by the Coal Advisory Board in 1967 that our national reserves of coking coal will be exhausted before A.D. 2000. This gives tremendous significance to the development work presently being carried out by Iscor on alternative methods for coke production. On the other hand the blast furnace may have to be replaced by an alternative process for the reduction of iron ores, e.g., the use of rotary kilns followed by electric arc smelting. Dr Bleloch also expressed grave forebodings about the reserves of bituminous coal, pointing out that with present methods of mining the recoverable coal in any given reserve is in general only 50 per cent of that reserve. He stated that in the past seventy years great quantities of coal have been forever placed beyond the reach of mining by being undermined by extraction of lower seams or lost by being burned. A final point made by Dr Bleloch was the fast rise in the capital investment in a fully integrated steel plant, the figure having risen in the past decade from just over R200 to R350 per ton of finished steel per annum. Dr Gebhard spoke of the direct reduction processes for iron making pointing out the difficulties of securing a high percentage of reduction and the relatively high cost of smelting in electric arc furnaces. Raise-boring experiences in the gold mines of the Anglo American Corporation Group by J. W. Wilson M.Sc., M.I.M.M., F.S.A.I.M.M., M.A.I.M.E. and P. C. Graham M.Sc. (Eng.) Gold mining is being carried out at ever-increasing depths in South Africa. For reasons of safety and human comfort, it is becoming imperative for raises to be developed by means other than conventional drilling and blasting. Raise-boring is an attractive alternative method. Initial raise-boring experiences in South African gold mines showed disappointingly high costs due to the abrasivity and difficulty of drilling Witwatersrand quartzites. Consequently, a research and development project was instigated with the objective of making raise-boring an economically viable technique in hard abrasive rock. A Robbins 61R raise-borer was made available to the Research and Development team and a number of raises have been drilled. During these trials two advances in cutter design were tested. This paper presents the results obtained, including drilling costs, and provides details of the equipment used.

The Institute was founded in 1894 as the Chemical and Metallurgical Society of South Africa. In 1904 it was reconstituted as the Chemical Metallurgical and Mining Society of South Africa and in 1956 it became the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. The objects of the Institute are to advance the science and practice of mining and metallurgy, to afford opportunities for the interchange and recording of knowledge of mining and metallurgy and to ensure high standards of professional conduct and competence. Membership benefits include monthly issues of the Journal of the Institute, General Meetings at which papers are read, symposia, excursions to mining and industrial concerns and the use of club facilities at Kelvin House. Technical journals received on an exchange basis are available to members at the Johannesburg Public Library. The current membership of the Institute is over 1 600. Membership applications are accepted from suitably qualified persons and the requirements for entrance to the various grades of membership are summarised below. Fellows shall not be less than 30 years of age, shall be university graduates in pure or applied science or shall produce evidence to the satisfaction of the Council that they have successfully completed a co-ordinated course of study in pure or applied science of at least three years' duration at an approved university or institution deemed by the Council to be of equivalent status. Members shall have been employed in senior technical positions in important mining or metallurgical undertakings for at least five years or they shall have practised as mining or metallurgical consultants for at least five years. They shall be practising their profession at the time of application. Entrance fee R10,00, Annual subscription R20,00. Letters of designation: F.S.A.I.M.M. Members shall be not less than 25 years of age and shall be university graduates in pure or applied science, or shall have successfully completed co-ordinated courses of study in pure or applied science of at least three years' duration. They shall have been engaged in work of an approved technical character in the mining or metallurgical industries, of which not less than two years shall have been in positions of responsibility. A candidate shall be practising his profession at the time of his application. Entrance fee R8,00, Annual subscription R18,00. Letters of designation: M.S.A.I.M.M. Associates shall be not less than twenty-five years of age, and shall have been engaged in positions of responsibility in, or associated with, the mining or metallurgical industries for periods of not less than three years. If, however, the candidate for admission to the higher grade of Associate, is at the time of his application, already a Student, he need satisfy the Council only that he is, at the time of his application, engaged in a position of responsibility in or associated with the mining or metallurgical industries. In all cases the applicants shall satisfy the Council that they are fit and proper persons to become Associates. Entrance fee R8,00, Annual subscription R18,00. Graduates shall be not less than 21 years of age and shall be university graduates in pure or applied science, or have completed co-ordinated courses of study in pure or applied science of at least three years' duration at an approved university or institution. They shall not remain Graduate members after attaining the age of 30 years without the permission of Council. Entrance fee R2,00, Annual subscription R12,00. Students shall be persons not less than 18 years of age who are being educated or trained in a manner approved by the Councils to occupy a technical position in or associated with the mining or metallurgical industries and who, furthermore, shall not have attained the qualification required for a higher grade of membership. They may remain Students until they have obtained the necessary qualifications for transfer to a higher grade of membership, but not after the end of the Institute's financial year in which they attain the age of 28 (twenty-eight) years. They shall then transfer to a higher grade to retain membership of the Institute. The Council may relax the provisions of this clause in such cases as it considers appropriate. Entrance fee nil; Annual subscription R5,00. Other. The Council has the power to elect to the grade of Fellow or Member, candidates who may not fulfil all the requirements for entrance to these grades but whose status, professional achievements and practical experience in mining or metallurgy justify such election.
