Tungsten carbide is a fine grey powder. It can be formed into shapes by compacting with the addition of a binder. Spherical particles are generally preferred in additive manufacturing as they pack together more efficiently than non-spherical particles, promoting a uniform powder bed density, better flowability, and elimination of internal cavities and fractures, resulting in a better quality of final product. The particle shape of powders can be transformed into spherical through the process of spheroidization. However, due to its high melting point, tungsten carbide could be difficult to spheroidize. Tungsten carbide was spheroidized using an inductively coupled radio frequency plasma at various plate powers between 9 and 15 kW. The influence of additional H2 in the sheath gas on the chemical composition of the tungsten carbide product was also investigated by means of XRD, which indicated that WC is converted to W2C at higher H2 concentrations. Optical analysis of SEM micrographs indicated that the spheroidization ratio increased with increased plasma energy.

The extraction of Cu(II) from HCl media using Cyanex 923 in kerosene was investigated. The effect of shaking time, aqueous phase acid concentration, extractant concentration, chloride ion concentration, various metal ions (Mn2+, Mg2+, Fe2+, and Ni2+), and temperature on the extraction were studied. Using 0.1 M Cyanex 923 the extraction of Cu(II) was 6.7 per cent from 3 M HCl, which increased up to 78.5 per cent with 6.5 M HCl and then decreased due to acid extraction by the extractant. The maximum extraction (97.5 per cent) was obtained with 1 M Cyanex 923 from 5 M HCl solution. A mathematical model has been developed to describe solvent extraction equllibria over wide ranges of concentration of extractant, acid, and chloride ions. The composition of the extracted species has been predicted on the basis of slope analysis results and extraction equilibrium modelling. The negative values of enthalpy change and entropy change confirm the exothermic formation of the extracted complex.

"SynopsisThe combustion and co-combustion behaviour of macadamia nut shell, high-ash coal, and anthracite, along with their blends was studied using thermogravimetry. The reactivities of all samples were analysed in air, oxygen, and CO2 atmospheres and at different heating rates from 10 to 40°C/min. Macadamia shell was found to have a lower ash content, 0.36%, than coal with 27.49% ash. The calorific values were similar, 19.64 MJ/kg and 19.44 MJ/kg respectively. The differential thermogravimetric results indicate that as the heating rates increase the ignition, peak, and burnout temperatures increase significantly, leading to high combustion rates. The interaction between the fuels was evaluated using the weighted average model, and the results indicated that there is more synergetic interaction between 20% macadamia plus 80% coal under oxygen than in air and CO2 atmospheres. The results of the investigation provide the combustion and co-combustion characteristics of various samples and their blends and indicate their combustion compatibilities. IntroductionThe global macadamia nut industry is developing at a very rapid rate. South Africa is currently the world’s third largest producer, with a production of about 35 000 t as of 2012 (Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, 2013), compared to 840 t produced in 1996. The greatest numbers of the macadamia nut farms in South Africa can be found in Mpumalanga, Limpopo, and KwaZulu-Natal provinces, with Mpumalanga as the largest producing area. There are many factors influencing the increased demand for macadamia nuts, the most important factor perhaps being their nutritional value (California Dried Fruit and Nuts, 2011; MPC, 2014) and their suitability as a feedstock for manufacturing cosmetics, bakery products, nut paste, chocolates, sauces, and ice-cream. As a fuel, macadamia shell has a high heating value ‘as-fired’ of about 20.71 MJ/kg (Vhathvarothai et al., 2013), which could in turn be used in drying the nust, and the shell could also be milled and applied as a fertilizer."

Geological mapping makes an important contribution to orebody knowledge during the evaluation of structurally controlled gold veins. Orebody knowledge comprises an understanding of mineralization characteristics relevant to evaluation, mining, processing and environmental issues and allows project expectations to be realistically set. Structural interpretation to define continuity and mineralization controls is a key part of geological risk reduction and the reporting mineral resources using the JORC and other codes. The Dolgellau gold belt is a small British field that produced an estimated 150 000 oz from narrow quartz veins. Historical records, recent exploration and production data, published material, and accessible surface and underground exposure provide a valuable case study. Previous mapping has shown the general geometry of vein systems, but tends to accentuate gross geological continuity. Recent work has attempted to determine internal vein architecture and examine the significance of the historical views of ore shoot controls. The work resulted in the definition of vein continuity scenarios for the gold belt and evaluation expectations associated with each. This has, in turn, led to a realistic view of what can be achieved from an evaluation and project development perspective.

"Face mapping is a simple but invaluable means of geological and geotechnical data acquisition whereby intact rock properties, rock mass properties, discontinuity properties, and structural orientation can be assessed. Although traditionally done via direct contact with the mapping face through techniques such as line mapping or window mapping, remote face mapping using various digital techniques has become increasingly popular in recent years. Sishen is a large open pit mining operation requiring a comprehensive geotechnical data-set to evaluate pit wall design and stability with the necessary level of confidence. Geotechnical borehole data, face mapping data, geotechnical laboratory testing data, and implicit structural models provide the main sources of this information. Although a large geotechnical borehole database has always been maintained at the mine, face mapping has in the past been restricted to sporadic and isolated stability assessments. In 2013 the mine acquired a terrestrial laser scanner with the resolution, photographic capabilities, and software required to carry out geotechnical face mapping. A face mapping procedure was set up based on accepted face mapping methods, the data requirements of the mine, and capabilities of the laser scanner system. Mapping data obtained from the scans was integrated into the Acquire geological data management system, a purpose-designed structured query language (SQL) database system used for storing the mine’s geotechnical data. Within the geotechnical design process, having face mapping data available has improved confidence in the properties of the rock mass and structural environment, allowing for better definition of geotechnical design sectors. Overall, the face mapping and geotechnical analysis features of the terrestrial laser scanner in use make it an invaluable geotechnical data capture tool, provided a system is in place to store mapping data in a manner that allows for meaningful rock mass and structural information to be produced. IntroductionFundamental to the geotechnical design process is the acquisition of a reliable and complete geotechnical data-set. Geotechnical data acquisition will typically commence during the early stages of a project and continue well into the operational life of the mine, with the data confidence progressively increasing as the amount of data captured increases. Sishen mine currently bases all open pit geotechnical designs and geotechnical risk assessment on geotechnical borehole data in conjunction with interpreted structural models. Boreholes are logged and the data is captured in an ongoing process. This process forms the initial step in the geotechnical design and risk assessment process whereby the raw data is used to classify the strength properties for each lithology, provide inputs for geotechnical block models, and ultimately provide the inputs for slope design analyses. To date, borehole data has provided the only largescale, organized data-set for input into geotechnical analyses at Sishen. Although borehole data is the best and most comprehensive form of geotechnical data, there are some shortfalls that can be addressed by other data collection methods. Variography was introduced by Dr. Pierre Gy to monitor a process, in the sixties. Later on, Francis Pitard extended this concept, building a complete system of variographic controls for different applications. Nevertheless, the existence of information about its use as a way to effectively control plants has been limited. There are infinite areas where variography and chronostatistics can be used. In this paper, two different cases related to gold and silver recovery, through well known but complex metallurgical routes are studied. The use of effective management of process variability software (EMPV) has shown to be a suitable solution to clarify problems at the plant and, consequently, a solution to the encountered problems has been proposed. Chronostatistics is like opening a new world to the metallurgist, making the process variability speak in a more comprehensive and in depth way. Once the ore has been extracted from the mine, sampling is necessary at each sequence of the metallurgical process involved. As a first example, leaching of the ore with cyanide in agitated tanks is another case of a complex metallurgy. The aim of the process is to know about residual values in the tailings in order to optimize process. As a second example, leaching of gold and silver in ore heaps, has to be optimized in terms of time, reagents consumption and, of course, in predicting a reasonable recovery. This last issue appears to be crucial. After cyanide leaching at the heaps, a carbon in columns process is involved, where there are a series of carbon loaded columns that are submitted to a dynamic process of load and unload, to finally deliver an enriched solution to the precious metal electrowinning plant. In both cases, variography has been a good approach to show metallurgists ways to improve the operation.

Potgietersrust Platinums Ltd is Anglo Platinum?s only open pit operation and annually extracts 57 million tonnes of rock from 2 open pits. Over the past 3 years ~220 km of exploration drilling has been done, ~1000 km of rock face have been exposed for face mapping and over 7000 laboratory and field tests have been conducted. This has produced large amounts of geotechnical data to be utilised for feasibility studies, initial slope design and ongoing slope optimisation. It was necessary therefore to develop geotechnical databases to manage the vast amounts of data collected. SABLE and MineMapper 3D databases were created for logging and mapping respectively, with rock testing data incorporated into both. A pit inspections database was developed in MS Access and the existing groundwater and slope monitoring database was improved. The databases were linked to AutoCAD and Datamine to ensure that the latest geotechnical data is used for planning, draughting and modelling. The use of geotechnical databases ensures that no data is lost, standards are maintained and analysis can be easily performed. This increases the confidence of the analysis and allows the geotechnical engineers to optimise slope designs and blast designs on a regular basis. This reduces the risk of slope failure thus making the open pits more economical and safe.

Production caving started for Lift 2 at Northparkes in August 2004. In a period of less than 3 months, more than 10 000 seismic events were recorded. Events up to local magnitude +2.9 were induced near the mine during caving, with event rates of up to 500 per day. This paper documents the seismicity related to cave initiation and cave propagation during the initial production of Lift 2. The seismogenic zone of events initially moved at a rate of about 0.5 metres per day, accelerating to 2 to 3 metres per day after a few months of cave production. Seismic data analysis infers that the crown pillar between Lift 1 and Lift 2 was destressed over a vertical height of about 100 metres. As the seismogenic zone approached the crown pillar, a macroseismic episode occurred, with more than 20 events of at least local magnitude +1 occurring in a two-week period. Based on the seismicity recorded for Lift 2 at Northparkes Mines, a caving mechanics model is proposed. Comments and suggestions are made for seismic data analysis and design of seismic monitoring systems in block caving mines.

The traditional route utilised for the recovery of Platinum Group Minerals (PGMs) in South Africa involves the concentration of ore by flotation, followed by smelting to produce a PGM rich matte, which is then digested hydrometallurgically to solubilise base metals and Platinum Group Elements (PGE). HCl/Cl2 is conventionally used for PGE dissolution from concentrated material, which is an aggressive reagent associated with high maintenance costs as well as environmental concerns. Of interest is the leaching of PGMs directly from mineral ores, low grade concentrates and tailings in a cyanide-ferricyanide system as a more sustainable alternative. This system has shown favourable Pt recoveries among the Pt minerals, but with sperrylite (PtAs2) displaying highly refractory behaviour. The dissolution of sperrylite is investigated in a cyanide-ferricyanide system in the context of an electrochemical study involving OCP, chrono-amperometry and cyclic voltammetry. This approach allows the assessment of leaching characteristics as well as the investigation of surface passivation, which is believed to contribute to poor Pt recoveries. Introduction Copper and cobalt oxide mineral deposits formed by the atmospheric weathering of near surface sulphide deposits are commonplace in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The most common route for the extraction of these metals is a hydrometallurgical one in which the base metal oxides are dissolved in sulphuric acid and then concentrated further by solvent extraction. However, as many of these deposits are relatively low grade (i.e. 0.5-1.8%Co and 2-4% Cu) and can also contain large amounts of acid consuming gangue minerals (i.e. dolomitic, micaeous, and/or siliceous), the hydrometallurgical route becomes uneconomic due to the excessive acid leaching costs. Some means of pre-concentration ahead of leaching is then desirable to improve the process economics. Apart from the small scale mining (Pan. Afr. News Agency, 2000) handpicking, although not easy, oxide concentration by flotation has been suggested. For the flotation process, the two most common approaches are controlled potential sulphidisation (CPS) and the fatty acid flotation method. The preferred method is dictated by the nature of the mineral makeup of the gangue. Being secondary deposits, the gangue associated with these ores is often complex and can play a significant role in the overall flotation efficiency. Laboratory flotation experience gained from the testing of a number of different ores of this type has revealed that it is not possible to prescribe a set method for the flotation of various ore types. Each ore needs to be analysed very carefully before and after laboratory flotation on an individual basis in order to arrive at an acceptable flotation technique Laboratory flotation testwork was carried out on three different samples from the DRC in attempts to isolate some of the more important variables affecting the flotation of copper and cobalt oxide minerals from these weathered deposits. This paper describes some early results achieved and experiences gained with these different ores ahead of a more detailed flotation test program which will follow in the near future on receipt of a significant quantity of a more representative sample. Controlled Potential Sulphidisation (CPS) was used in an attempt to achieve acceptable recoveries of both copper and cobalt.

Growing global concern over the impacts of climate change, attributable largely to fossil fuel energy sources, has led to the widely shared goal for a ‘just transition’ to cleaner energy and reduced dependence on carbon-based fuels. As the world’s 14th biggest CO2 emitter and being particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, South Africa must embark on a just transition pathway. This paper reviews expected coal mine closures and associated community vulnerabilities and local governance challenges in South Africa. Decommissioning schedules for all coal-fired power stations and operating coal mines are plotted, and 69 mining host communities and 21 municipalities are mapped, classified, and described. Community socio-economic profiles are measured using a set of SDG indicators and census data and municipalities assessed through financial audits. Our research shows that five coal-fired power plants (8.9 GW) and 15 coal mines (29.5 Mt/a) will probably close by 2030, and a further four plants (14 GW) and 23 mines (106 Mt/a) by 2040. Thus, the shift to cleaner energy will likely occur without the premature closures implied by the just transition. The impact of mine closure on the 2.5 million residents of host communities will be significant, particularly as levels of income, employment, and education are already very low and many municipalities are in financial distress. The South African approach to the just transition needs to take local realities into account and the narrative must support an effective transition that does not undermine energy security and economic growth.

In 2023, polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell membrane electrode assemblies accounted for about 62% of the global fuel cell market share and this demand is expected to grow. Commercialisation requires technologies capable of cost-effective, high-volume manufacturing. The membrane electrode assembly is crucial and represents a significant cost to polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell manufacturing. Manufacturing the electrode components for membrane electrode assemblies at high volumes can reduce production costs while delivering on the forecasted industry demands. Roll-to-roll is a mature coating technology applied in various manufacturing industries such as batteries, printed electronics, microelectronics, photovoltaics, printing, paper consumables, etc., with significant potential for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell manufacturing. While the high-volume production process for membrane electrode assembly manufacturing differs from laboratory-scale, the membrane electrode assembly structure remains unchanged. Roll-to-roll is a continuous coating process with speeds of 10 m/min being achieved. In this work, MicrogravureTM and slot-die coating methods have been adopted and have shown promising outcomes for producing gas diffusion electrodes for membrane electrode assemblies. An overview of the MicrogravureTM and slotdie coating methodologies is provided, and a discussion on preliminary results and challenges are presented. Work on MicrogravureTM gas diffusion electrode manufacturing has already achieved comparable performance with spray-coated gas diffusion electrodes. The influence of coating parameters and drying on the coated catalyst layer quality is discussed.

Middleburg Ferrochrome (MFC), a company in Samancor Chrome, commissioned a new ferrochrome smelter in March 2009. This is a 60 MW DC-arc furnace with a DC power supply for the smelting of Transvaal chromite ore fines. With the benefit of 12 years' experience with this technology while operating a 44 MW DC-arc furnace, MFC mitigated all known challenges and considered up-scaling risk in the new plant, which had a rapid ramp-up to full power in 02 of 2009. Good operating practices, as made possible by robust equipment selection, including a thyristor rectifier set of proven technology, and operation with optimal slag chemistry, leads to a safe and effective plant operation. With the optimized furnace design and a correctly sized power conditioning system, using only standard (static) harmonic filters and a correctly sized smoothing reactor, the arc furnace is not a 'dirty load' for the utility, staying well within IEC limits for power quality. A patented arc compensation system is installed and allows for full arc position control (to compensate for magnetic field induced arc deflection) so that a symmetrical crucible is maintained, significantly benefiting refractory life. The principal benefits gained from the MFC process is the fact that ore fines are processed, without metallurgical coke, and higher chrome recoveries are achieved compared to other smelting technologies when using a DC open arc for smelting. "SynopsisGoing beyond transformation claims contained in employment equity scorecards and industry compliance reports, this article provides qualitative insight into the initiatives employed and challenges experienced by mining companies in a quest to transform the mining industry. Perceptions expressed during in-depth interviews with 10 senior executives showed that the assumption that mining companies are reluctant to transform is erroneous. Results from this study suggest buy-in and commitment to transformation. This article describes specific initiatives undertaken by mining companies to transform. The most notable initiatives include staff recruitment efforts to appoint historically disadvantaged South Africans (HDSAs), staff development initiatives, as well as community development. The findings furthermore contextualize the challenges experienced by industry participants in their quest to transform. Despite accusations that industry participants are not taking responsibility for the implementation of the transformation agenda, government needs to recognize that they too have a role to play and need to appreciate and assist in the current challenges experienced by the industry.IntroductionWe need a mining sector that works. Mining employs over half a million people. It is the biggest earner of foreign exchange in our country. It also contributes about 20 billion rand directly to tax revenue. Mining also makes a far larger contribution as a buyer of goods and services, and a supplier of inputs to other sectors of our economy and other economies around the globe’ said President Jacob Zuma during the 2014 State of the Nation Address (Zuma, 2014). However, despite apparent commitment from government, enforced compliance with social and labour plans, regulations and Mining Charter targets, the South African mining industry is slow to gain local and international investor trust (Deloitte & Touche, 2013; Mashego, 2013).Industry players acknowledge that their context has changed – creating various challenges (Davis, 2014). In the past few years, such challenges included subdued commodity prices, increased working costs, constrained infrastructure, and high labour costs, coupled with poor levels of productivity, strained labour-management relations, an uncertain regulatory environment, and the inevitable maturation of the industry (Deloitte & Touche, 2013; Davenport, 2014). Mining affected communities also became more cognisant of their rights, and politicians more vocal in their expectations from their relationships with the mining giants (Davis, 2014). One of the main issues that contributed to the difficult operating conditions was claims from organized labour and Minister Shabangu that this industry is too slow to transform. Specific claims were made in terms of employment equity, fair salaries and wages for mineworkers, housing and living conditions, health and safety issues, and general working conditions (Limpitlaw et al., 2005; Miningmx, 2013; Shabangu, 2010). These claims were followed by what Gill Marcus, Reserve Bank Governor, explained as ‘unprotected strike action [that] has escalated into an uncontrolled, violent and unlawful landscape, led by a mob mentality in the absence of formal and recognised leaders’ (Mavuso,2013)."
