Because of problems encountered with conventional timber supports, a system of concrete sausageshaped support pillars was tested. The pillars are 3 m long, 0,6 m wide, and between 70 and 80 cm high (the height of the stoping width). They consist of bags filled with a grout of cement (slagment and sand in the ratio of I :2, and are installed in a staggered pattern 6 m apart on dip and 2 m apart on strike. These support packs have proved successful, and, although they cost more than the timber supports formerly used (R4,63 per cent are supported as against R2,26 for the conventional timber pack), their use is felt to be justified when account is taken of the costs of lost production and low productivity due to the bad hangingwall conditions that occurred with the conventional system.

The purpose of the project was to optimize load haul dump (LHD) machinery use as they were spending too much time doing what they should not be doing. During the investigation, the author found that the machine's actual availability was 86% and the utilization ranged between 30% and 42%. This shows that the availability of the machine has met its target. Therefore the main problem was with the LHD utilization and that is what the project focuses on. To satisfy the objectives, the author firstly studied the existing mining data like the key performance indicators (KPIs) in order to analyse the machine's availability and utilization; this is what gave direction to the problem. Secondly the author did a literature review on mines with similar problems. This gave the author ideas on what to look at in approaching such a situation. Thirdly, the author gathered information on what the LHDs are doing on a daily basis by doing a time study. This gave the author an idea of how long it took the LHDs to complete a specific task. The author also interviewed operators and their supervisors in order to find the best practice work. This helped in identifying the problem areas when comparing the best practice work with what the LHDs are actually doing. According to the project results, it was found that the LHDs are underutilized due to shortage of drivers and the long distances the LHDs have to travel for material loading and refuelling. The author recommended that the machine utilization should be improved by training more operators in order to eliminate the 'no operator' downtime; the cost arrangement of this recommendation is included in the report. The author also recommended that the travelling time should be reduced by using tractors instead of LHDs when long distances need to be travelled for material loading. Another recommendation for reducing travelling time was to bring the mobile fuel tank closer to a section; the cost arrangement for this recommendation is also included in the report. In an effort to improve efficiencies and reduce costs, AngloGold has embarked on a process to develop and deliver consistent, high quality, tailings based support or construction products to stopes and tunnels on request. A three-phase approach of product conceptualisation, design and delivery has been adopted. To date a substantial amount of laboratory development has taken place with promising results, indicating that the project aims are achievable. Dans un effort pour améliorer le rendement et réduire les coûts, AngloGold s’est embarqué dans une opération qui vise à développer et fournir aux chantiers d’extraction et tunnels, sur demande, des produits de construction ou de support basés sur rejets qui sont réguliers et de haute qualité. Une méthode à trois volets a été adoptée : conception, création et livraison. A ce jour, un développement important en laboratoire s’est produit, avec des résultats pleins de promesses, qui semblent indiquer que les buts du projet peuvent être atteints. In der Bemühung, die Effizienz zu steigern und Kosten zu verringern, hat AngloGold begonnen ein Verfahren zu entwickeln welches auf Anfrage konsistent hochqualitative auf Haufwerk basierender Unterstützung oder Bauprodukte für Abbaustellen und Tunnels entwickelt und liefert Eine Dreiphasenplan zur Produktkonzeptualisierung, Design und Lieferung wurde adoptiert. Bis jetzt hat eine substantielle Anzahl an Laborentwicklung mit vielversprechenden Resultaten stattgefunden und aufgezeigt, daß die Projektziele erreichbar sind.

For many years the concept of life cycle costing (LCC) was promoted for decision making in corrosion protection systems. Nevertheless, the application of LCC was limited. Input data was often sourced from suppliers and met with scepticism. As a result final analysis was often insufficiently rigorous to meet the needs of Project Managers in sound decision making. The need for expediency often resulted in non-optimal corrosion protection system specifications. With improved communications and the global reach of industries, case history data, based upon actual performance has been able to provide input to substantiate decision making. However, today?s focus upon sustainability whereby environmental, economic and even social aspects enter into decision making has extended LCC into Life Cost Analysis (LCA). In an LCA analysis energy and environmental inputs into systems are compared as part of an overall assessment. The development of Agenda 21 at the Rio summit of 1992 has challenged the countries of the world to look at sustainable development in every economic activity. This ranges from construction to mining to electricity production to automotive production, use and disposal. The protection of buildings, infrastructure and transport systems is part of the needs of sustainable development. Zinc based corrosion protection has been an important part of the arsenal of the corrosion protection industry. This paper will highlight the use of LCC and the development of LCA with reference to the use of zinc based protection systems in a number of important industries.

Laboratory test-work has established that two classes of redox catalysts based on anthraquinone and bipyridinium derivatives are effective in accelerating the rate of removal of metallic iron from reduced ilmenite (RI) in the aeration step of the Becher process. Two water-soluble anthraquinone derivatives are efficient: 9,10-anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonicacid, disodium salt (catalyst AQ-2,6) and 9,10-anthraquinone-2-sulfonic acid, monosodium salt(catalyst AQ-2). When 0.2 per cent w/v of either was added during aeration the rate of metalliciron removal was accelerated by two to three times. Furthermore, the addition of either compound resulted in magnetite (Fe3O4), the iron oxide phase preferred in commercial practice, being formed. However, both AQ-2,6 and AQ-2 were rapidly lost from solution during aeration although their catalytic activities persisted even when their concentrations in solution were low(<0.05 per cent w/v). The negatively charged anthraquinones were lost from solution most probably by adsorption onto the magnetite that has a net positive charge at the pH values encountered during aeration. To address this problem, the catalytic activities of positively charged bipryridinium derivatives were tested. Two water-soluble bipyridinium compounds, paraquat (1,1’-dimethyl-4,4’-bipyridinium dichloride) and diquat (6,7 dihydrodipyrido [1,2-a:2’,1’-c] pyrazinediiumdibromide), were found to significantly accelerate the rate of removal of metallic iron from reduced ilmenite, and both gave magnetite as the oxide product in the laboratory tests. Moreover, recycle tests showed they were not lost from solution as quickly as were the anthraquinone derivatives. Results in larger scale plant laboratory reactors also showed a significant increase in aerationrates when diquat was added and magnetite was again the oxide formed. However, the oxygensupply to the reactors was insufficient to achieve the maximum effect of the catalysts on theaeration rates. The limited supply of oxygen in a full scale aerator may prevent the application ofthe catalysts in a commercial Becher operation. Pressure tunnels are constructed nurously in related with powerhouse. In some cases, according to high internal water pressure, rock mass around tunnel can seldom suffer this pressure. So installation of concrete lining which interacts with rock mass and suffers parts of this pressure and transfers the rest of the pressure to the rock. In this paper hydromechanical interaction between rock and lining is investigated. With using empirical and numerical methods concrete lining for Symareh waterway is designed. Initial support of 10 cm reinforced shotcret with wire mesh and rock bolts pattern of 2.5*2.5 m with length of 4 m is suggested. By using FLAC package final lining with paying attention to axial force and momentum in reinforced concrete was designed. Reinforced concrete with 60 cm thickness and two rows of bars, 18 mm diameter and 20 cm spacing are designed. Also for preventing cracks in concrete which caused by the change of temperature and shrinkage, bars with 10 mm diameter and 25 cm spacing, and also bars with 8 mm diameter and 10 cm as minimum shear bars are suggested. L&apos;installation d&apos;une couche de béton a l&apos;intérieur de la galerie donc réagit avec les roches et support d&apos;une partie de cette pression et transfère le reste de la pression aux roches. Dans ce papier, l&apos;interaction hydromécanique entre la roche et la couche en béton a été étudiée. En se basant sur les méthodes empiriques et numériques le système de support de galerie de passage d&apos;eau de Saymareh a été conçu. Un soutènement initial d&apos;une épaisseur de 10 cm de béton étant renforcé par un grill métallique et une maille de boulon (2.5 * 2.5 m) d&apos;une longueur de 4 m a été proposé. En utilisant le logiciel de FlAC, la couche finale en béton selon les forces dans le béton a été conçue. Le béton renforcé d&apos;une épaisseur de 60 cm et deux ranges d&apos;armateurs (18 mm de diamètre) avec un intervalle de 20 cm a été conçu. De plus; pour éviter des fissures dans le béton suite au changement de la température et de l&apos;extraction, des armateurs de 10 mm de diamètre et de 25 cm d&apos;intervalle pour augmenter la résistance au sciesiement du béton ont été proposes Unter Druck stehende Tunnels werden hauptsaechlich im Zusammenhang mit Kraftwerken gebaut. In einigen Faellen, wo der Wasserdruck zu hoch ist, Kann selten die Felsenmasse diesen hoehen Druck allein aufnehwen. Deshalb werden sie mit Betonauskleidung versehen, die wegen guter Wechelwirkung mit der Felsenmasse einen Hauptanteil des Druckes aufnehmen Kann, wobei der Rest an die Felsenmesse weitergeleitet wird. In dieser Arbeit wird die hydromechanische Wechelwirkung zwischen der Gesteinmasse und der Auskleidung untersucht. Mit Hilfe empirischen und numerischen Verfahren sowie Kombination der beiden wurde eine Betonauskleidung fuer die Symareh Wasser Kannal koustruiert. Als erstes wurde ein 10Cm dicker armierter Beton mit einem Mashengitter von 2.5*2.5 sowie den gleichen Felsbolzenabstaenden und einer Laenge von 4 m vorgeschlagen. Mit Hilfe des FLAC Programms wurde die Hauptauskleidung unter Beruecksichtigung von Axialkraeften und Momenten im Stahlbeton koustruiert. Der 60 Cm dicke Stahlbeton wurde mit zwei Reihen von Stangen, 8 mm im Durchmesser und in Abstaenden von 20 Cm koustruiert. Ferner im Sinne der Vorbeugung gegen Rissen im Beton, die durch Temperatur aendeungen und Schrumpfungen bedingt sind, wurden Stangen mit 10 mm Durchmesser und 2.5 Cm Abstaenden zur Erhoehung vor Scherfestigkeit des Betons vorgeschlagen.

Electricity supply constraints in SA are increasingly challenging mines to operate more energy efficiently without reducing production output. Mining compressed air systems are well known to be operated inefficiently and are also a major power consumer. Two available and proven technologies can be applied on new and existing mines to replace or and optimise available compressed air facilities and achieve meaningful reductions in electrical power consumption; ? Hydro powered drilling and mining is significantly more energy efficient than compressed air and provides drilling rates that are twice as fast. ? Stope drilling systems using compressed-air or water drills allow further energy savings. The technologies are discussed and a broad strategy to selectively apply these them together is presented.

Abstract For the feasibility study of an underground waste disposal the characterization of the coupled behaviour of the host rock is required: Because of the very low permeability of these formations few experimental data are generally available. In this framework the uses of the sensitivity studies could orient the experimental efforts by highlighting the key parameters of the formation. This paper gives a first approach of the sensitivity studies performed with probabilistic methods in the geomechanical field. A one dimensional model which characterizes the thermohydromechanical response of an argillaceous rock to the excavation of a waste canister site and its setting up, is considered. Zusammenfassun Die Machbarkeitsstudie eines tiefliegenden Endlagers für radioaktive Abfälle beinhaltet die Untersuchung des gekoppelten Verhaltens des im Lagerbereich anstehenden Gesteins. Aufgrund der sehr geringen Wasserdurchlässigkeit dieser Formationen liegen häufig nur wenige experimentelle Angaben vor. Die Verwendung von Sensibilitätsstudien kann in diesem Zusammenhang als Hilfsmittel zur Entscheidungsfindung dienen. Dabei sollen die maßgeblichen Eigenschaften der Formation festgestellt werden, anhand derer der Umfang der experimentellen Erkundung festgelegt werden kann. Dieser Artikel stellt einen ersten Ansatz zur Durchführung von Sensibilitätsstudien mittels einer mechanisch-probablistischen Kopplung im Bereich der Geomechanik sowie die Vorteile gegenüber Parameterstudien vor. Zur Abbildung des thermohydromechanischen Stoffverhaltens von tonigem Fels während der Schachterstellung und der Einlagerung der Abfälle wird ein eindimensionales Model verwendet. Résumé L&apos;étude de faisabilité d&apos;un centre de stockage de déchets radioactifs en profondeur passe par la caractérisation du comportement couplé de la roche hôte. Du fait de la très faible perméabilité de ces formations, souvent peu de données expérimentales sont disponibles. Dans ce cadre l&apos;utilisation d&apos;études de sensibilité permettrait d&apos;orienter les efforts expérimentaux en faisant ressortir les caractéristiques primordiales de la formation. Cet article présente une première approche de la réalisation d&apos;études de sensibilités à l&apos;aide de couplages mécano-fiabilistes dans le domaine de la géomécanique. Un model unidimensionnel caractérisant la réponse thermohydromécanique d&apos;une roche argileuse au creusement d&apos;un puit de stockage et à la mise en place de conteneurs de déchets est considéré.

The paper summarizes the current state of development of simulation models for SAG and FAG mills, and gives the results of recent investigations of the physical processes occurring in autogenous grinding. The breakage process is treated as the sum of three regions of breakage actions: normal breakage caused by nipping of particles between media (steel balls or pebbles); abnormal breakage caused by media when the particle or lump is too big in relation to the media to be readily nipped; and self-breakage resulting from the chip¬ping fracture and abrasion of the tumbling action of rock lumps. Each region of breakage action has associated specific rates of breakage and primary progeny fragment distributions. A simplified form of the model was used to predict the performance of an 8 m diameter SAG mill with L/D = 0.5 grinding a copper ore, and predicted maximum capacity and minimum kWh/ton at about 6% ball load at 25% total filling. Two FAG mills of L/D = 2 were necessary to give the same capacity, and the simulations indicated a lower kWh/ton for these mills. For this ore, both systems were technically feasible.

Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) affect the wellbeing of workers and result in poor quality work, lower work performance and decreased motivation. In contrast to ‘occupational’ diseases where there is a direct cause-and-effect relationship between hazard and disease (e.g., asbestos and asbestosis, lead and lead poisoning), ‘work-related’ diseases are multifactorial, where the work environment and the type of work that is performed contribute significantly to musculoskeletal disorders. WMSD is the term used to describe disorders and diseases of the musculoskeletal system (i.e. muscles, joints, ligaments, tendons and nerves). WMSDs are by definition a work-related phenomenon. The literature shows inarguably that certain jobs and certain work-related factors are associated with a significant risk of contracting a WMSD. It is assumed that repeated movements and postures, static work, continuous loading of the tissue structures or lack of recovery time, trigger or cause a pathological process that then manifests itself as a WMSD. This paper looks at the prevalence of the WMSD condition at three mines in South Africa: a coal, a gold and a platinum mine. Predisposing factors that include work factors, presentation of symptoms and psychological factors will be discussed in the paper.

The paper discusses the improvements achieved after an external sparger flotation column was installed as a final cleaner at the Northam Platinum Ltd. UG 2 concentrator in South Africa. It further discusses the improvements achieved after the conversion of a conventional flotation column, utilized as cleaner in the Merensky concentrator, to an external sparger flotation column. Finally, the application of the above knowledge in the design and commissioning of an external sparger flotation column as final cleaner in the furnace slag concentrator, is also discussed. 1. FINAL CLEANER AT THE UG 2 CONCENTRATOR The MF2 designed UG 2 concentrator is processing 75 000 tonnes run of mine ore at a head grade of 4.0 g/t 3PGM+Au and a feed Cr2O3 concentration of 28 %. Since commissioning of the plant in 2001, Cr2O3 in final concentrate amounted to approximately 5 % of the total mass. Although final concentrate produced from the UG 2 concentrator is blended with final concentrate obtained from the Merensky concentrator before smelting, blended Cr2O3 values in excess of 1.6% lead to difficulties in the subsequent smelting process. Several options for reducing the amount of Cr2O3 in final concentrate have been evaluated namely:- ? Differing types of depressants at various dosing rates. This test work did not reduce the amount of Cr2O3 reporting to final concentrate by any significant extent. ? Reduction in mass pull to minimize the entrainment of Cr2O3 in the concentrate stream.. This process change had a detrimental effect on PGM recovery. Conclusions were drawn that conventional mechanically agitated flotation cells could not achieve the required selectivity without sacrificing PGM recovery. As a consequence an alternative mechanism needed to be incorporated for the final cleaning of PGM concentrate.

In an underground mine the ingress of heat can generally be attributed to two sources (Rock exposure and artificial mechanisms). The heat load relating rock exposure is subdivided into stoping [~40%] and haulages [~20%]. Rock is exposed to the ambient air and as a mine increases in depth the VRT (Virgin Rock Temperature) increases which leads to more heat ingress underground. To counter the heat ingress, especially in low-seam stoping areas of a deep level mine, air is, a) cooled artificially, b) the amount of rock exposed is reduced in the back areas of a stope by backfill applications, and c) ventilation air is used more efficiently. The heat reduction within a stope due to placed backfill could amount to ~50% for operations mining at a mean rock breaking depth of about 4500 mbc (metres below collar). Unfortunately, due to backfill transport methods, the physical fluid properties and application methods adopted, additional heat is induced into the air. The heat ingress due to backfill application could amount to as much as 25% of the overall in-stope heat load. This heat influx, seen as a negative aspect of backfill operations, is nevertheless overshadowed by the overall in-mine heat load reduction capability of about 20% attainable. The in-stope benefit [~50%] attainable from backfill operations could be increased with the incorporation of a heat exchange (cooling) methodology to offset the additional heat ingress into the surrounding air of a deep underground mine.

The latest Draft MPRRB was released for public comment in October 2006. The main purpose of the Bill is to collect royalties at mines developed in terms of new-order mineral rights granted through the MPRDA process. The transition phase stipulated in the MPRDA will be completed by 1 May 2009, on which date mineral royalties will become payable to the state. The royalty rates stated in the MPRRB differ from mineral to mineral and also depend on the degree of refinement. Gold is the subject of this paper, where the royalty rate ranges from 1.5% (for refined gold) to 3% (for unrefined gold) of sales revenue. This royalty is payable regardless of profit, with a maximum 75% relief for loss-making mines. The purpose of this paper is to establish whether or not it would be necessary for gold mines to adjust their mineral reserve statements as a result of this Bill. The methodology is to add the royalty costs stipulated in the MPRRB to the actual quarterly information for the past ten years as reported by the gold-mine members of the COM. The rationale is to investigate the impact this Bill (in its current form) would have had on gold reserves that must be left unmined in the ground because of a higher pay limit. The results of the study point to a significant impact on reserves available for mining with the subsequent shortening of mine lives and retrenchment of workers. Had the MPRRB been effective for the 10 years prior to 1996, it would have resulted in 46 tonnes of gold being sterilised. Stated alternatively, 30 700 workers at COM gold mines alone would have lost their livelihoods.

As regulations on the transport, exposure, disposition and emission of these elements have become more stringent; it has become increasingly more difficult to derive the values from the resources. This paper outlines the fundamentals of alkaline sulfide hydrometallurgy and its successful application to arsenic, antimony and mercury bearing ores, concentrates, by-products, and other materials.

The Eighteenth International Symposium on the Appli¬cation of Computers and Mathematics in the Mineral Industries was held in London from 26th to 30th March, 1984. The Symposium was organized by the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy under the leadership of Mr M.J. Cahalan, Chairman of the Organizing Committee. The venue chosen was the Royal School of Mines, Imperial College of Science and Technology, in South Kensington. Some 300 delegates from all parts of the world attended, which included a delegation from South Africa that numbered about 20 persons. This extremely successful series of international meet¬ings was begun in 1961 in Tucson, Arizona, and has grown in strength and importance over the years. The arrange¬ment of the symposia is regulated by the International Council for APCOM under the Chairmanship of Professor R.V. Ramani (U.S.A.), the other current members being Professor J. Elbrond (Canada), Dr Thys B. Johnson (U.S.A.), Professor Young C. Kim (U.S.A.), Professor D.G. Krige (R.S.A.), Professor A.J. Lynch (Australia), Professor C.T. Shaw (U.K.), Dr A. Weiss (U.S.A.), and Professor F.L. Wilke (F.R.G.). There is no doubt that the enthusiasm and dedication of this small group of people and the excellent working relationship that exists between them are responsible for the continued success of APCOM meetings.

Seismic integration schemes aim to incorporate the rock mass response provided by the historical seismic activity to improve the ability of numerical models to reproduce future response to mining. Up to now, integration schemes considered the events using quasi-static models. This paper presents case studies that consider some of the seismic and modelling issues needed to extend these schemes to include the dynamic characteristics of seismic events. The ultimate aim of an automated integration scheme seems impractical for dynamic modelling. The predictions of the WAVE elastodynamic finite difference program are, however, suitable for modelling limited numbers of events to determine either the near-field velocities and damage or the effect of fractures and excavations on the far-field low frequency response. Les projets d’intégration sismique ont le but d’incorporer la réponse de la masse rocheuse à l’activité sismique historique pour améliorer la capacité des modèles numériques à reproduire la réponse future à l’exploitation minière. Jusqu’à présent, les projets d’intégration étudiaient les évènements avec des modèles quasi-statiques. L’étude présente révèle des études de cas qui considèrent certaines des questions concernant modelage et séismes qui sont nécessaires pour porter plus loin ces projets en incluant les caractéristiques dynamiques des évènements sismiques. Le but final d’un projet d’intégration automatisé semble impraticable pour la modélisation dynamique. En revanche, les prédictions du programme élastodynamique par la méthode des différences finies WAVE sont appropriées à la modélisation d’un nombre limité d’évènements de façon à déterminer soit les vitesses à petite échelle et les dommages, soit les effets des fractures et excavations sur la réponse de basse fréquence à grande échelle. Seismische Integrationsschemata zielen darauf ab, Reaktionen der Gesteinsmasse, die von den Berichten seismischer Aktivitäten stammt, zu inkorporieren um numerische Modelle in die Lage zu versetzen, künftige Antwort zum Bergbau zu reproduzieren. Bis dato betrachteten Integrationsschemata die Fälle mit quasi-statischen Modellen. Diese Arbeit stellt Fallstudien dar, die einige der seismischen und modellierenden Fragen betrachten, die benötigt werden, um diese Schemata auszuweiten, um die dynamischen Charakeristika seismischer Fälle einzuschließen. Das Endziel eines automatisierten Integrationschemas erscheint für das dynamisches Berechnen undurchführbar. Die Vorhersagen des WAVE elastodynamisch begrenzten Unterschiedprogramms sind jedoch verwendbar für das Berechnen von begrenzten Anzahlen von Fällen, um entweder die Nahfeldgeschwindigkeiten und Schaden oder den Effekt von Brüchen und Extraktionen auf der Fernfeld Niederfrequenzantwort festzustellen.

Investor confidence can be compromised when one observes large discrepancies between the SAMREC reserves and the mining plan. It is therefore up to the responsible persons to ensure that all contributing factors get taken into account when determining a reserve declaration. Confounding factors could be further aggravated by large oscillations in the commodity price thus resulting in major changes to the mining plan, if the accepted price was either too optimistic or pessimistic. Additional factors that must receive our attention are, uncertainty in geological facies type, mining practices, geology and grade estimation. The paper outlines (in the authors? opinion) some of the important factors that need to be taken into account, in order to ensure proper alignment between the estimates of the life of mine (LOM) reserve grades, and the corresponding actualisation of the mining plan. These parameters provide an historical insight into what actually happens when attempts are made to implement the mining envisaged in the LOM plan. In turn these allow judicious application of discount factors that enable a realistic estimate of SAMREC reserve classification and declaration. Some of the factors that will be covered are: - 1) Flexibility of developed reserves and the ability to maintain this. 2) Mining control mechanisms and their overall efficacy. 3) The ability to extrapolate facies types and its effect on grade control. 4) The ability to control the mining mix and value variation. 5) Finding a happy medium between optimism and pragmatism.
