The Bureau of Mines has investigated the mineral matter content of 38 American coals using X-ray fluorescence. Measurements of the Ka intensity for magnesium, aluminum, silicon, sulfur, calcium, and iron permit the determination of those elements as well as an indirect determination of the ash con-tent of the coals. The percentage of each of the six elements was corrected for absorption by all six elements as well as by hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen. It made little difference whether the values used for hydrogen, carbon, and nitrogen were obtained from chemical analysis or whether average values for all coals were used. In all cases, oxygen was obtained by difference. The correction for absorption by all these elements involved the inversion of a 6 X 6 matrix and was performed by computer. Assuming that the elements magnesium, aluminum, silicon, calcium, and iron were present in the ash as oxides, the quantity of ash was determined. The results for the mineral elements as well as for ash and oxygen were in good agreement with chemical results. Particle size was found to have a significant effect on fluorescence intensities. A study of size effects was made for pyrite particles, since the sulfur content of coals is of particular interest. Theoretical equations were derived and verified relating the intensity to particle size. It was found that the coal samples must be ground to less than 2 microns. Sulfur appears in several forms in coal, and the effect of sulfur form on intensity was investigated. It was found that the Ka intensity was independent of sulfur form but the Kß intensity varied with the type of sulfur. Thus, the Ka intensity was used for determination of the quantity of sulfur present. Utilization of the sulfur KB intensity did not permit a determination of the proportions of sulfur forms present in coal. However, for synthetic mixtures of cystine and pyrite in carbon black, measurement of sulfur Ka and Kß permit determination of each constituents from measurements of sulfur intensities alone.

"The use of such methods and apparatus as the Dautriche method and the Mettegang recorder for the determination of the rate of burning of black blasting powder and other strictly burning explosives has been found to give such erratic results that no reliance can be placed on the data thus obtained. Consequently, investigators of those factors which may affect the burning rate, such as size of grain, absolute density, chemical composition, and means of ignition have had to rely mainly on observations made during practical use for determination of the part played by each. Such tests are very difficult of interpretation.The purpose of this paper is to describe a method used by the explosives division of the Bureau of Mines for the investigation of such explosives and to present the results of an investigation using that method.The investigation was concerned with the effect of grain size, initial pressure, and means of ignition on the rate of burning or rate of pressure development of black blasting powder as compared with pellet powder.The Bichel pressure gauge was used for these tests, with the slight modification to the apparatus and method described in U. S. Bureau of Mines Bulletin 15.4 These modifications consisted of reducing the speed of the revolving drum on which the time-pressure record is taken, measuring the speed of the drum by a belt-driven tachometer, and introducing an induction coil in series with the electric squib or electric detonator to mark on the time pressure record the instant at which the squib or detonator was fired."

This Bureau of Mines report is an applications manual that can be used by the nonmetallic mining industry for guidance in installing noise control materials into crushing and screening plants. These noise control modifications were installed and successfully tested at three operating quarries. This report identifies the major noise sources that can be encountered in crushing and screening plants, and discusses the applicable noise control materials and techniques that a plant operator can utilize on a retrofit basis to reduce equipment noise.

Owing to changes in State mining laws, the Maryland Bureau of Mines requires all mine foremen to have a thorough, practical knowledge of mine gases and the limitations and use of recognized gas-detecting devices. This requirement involves immediate training of second-grade mine foremen and aspirants to qualify them for certification under the new law. Cooperation of the Federal Bureau of Mines was requested, and a plan for training was discussed and adopted. The methods used in Maryland aroused unusual interest by participating individuals, and the final results were very satisfactory. Consequently, it is thought that this plan will be of interest and assistance to other organizations faced with the need for such training.

APPENDIX B - DEVELOPMENT OF FOAM-CONCRETE SLURRY MINE SEALANT 1. Introduction This appendix describes the results of an experimental development and laboratory evaluation of foam-concrete as a rapid setting, lightweight, self-supporting mine sealant material. Foam concrete, otherwise known as Aerated Concrete, is a form of lightweight concrete whose structure consists of air bubbles held together by a hardened cement mortar. Its principal applications are found in roofing, insulation, shock absorbing, and backfill. The air bubbles in foam concrete are formed either by chemical reaction in the wet, placed mortar, or by introducing a stable foam into the mortar during mixing. The mortar is usually a cement slurry with fine sand or fly ash as filler. Our attention focused on preformed foam concrete, since this is most adaptable to field applications. Equipment is available,* which simultaneously mixes and pumps a slurry of foam concrete. Such a slurry can be produced at a rate of up to 50 yards/hr and has been pumped in a 2-inch-diameter hose 1000-feet horizontally and 250 feet vertically up without significant bubble deterioration. The investigation of major and minor coal-mine disasters has been a routine function of the Bureau of Mines since its inception in 1910, and the facts obtained during such investigations have been used as a basis for determining the precautions that the managements and employees of many mines are observing to forestall similar occurrences. The Bureau has conducted research on roof-control and other mine problems, but a comprehensive study of other fatal accidents was not attempted until February 10, 1950, when the policy of investigating all coal-mine fatalities in the United States was approved by Bureau of Mines Director James Boyd. The investigations are being conducted by Federal coal mine inspectors functioning under the provisions of the Coal Mine Inspection and Investigation Act of May, 1941, Public Law 49; and reports covering the investigations are distributed to management, the State mine-inspection agency, and representatives of the mine workers' organization have jurisdiction at the mine.

A fifth successive record in fuel efficiency was established by the petroleum-refining industry in 1937, when the average heat requirement per barrel of crude oil run to stills was 554,000 3. t. u. compared with 597,000 3. t. u. in 1936. These amounts represent roughly the heat ob¬tainable from a tenth of a barrel of fuel oil (see fig. 1). Innumerable factors can influence heat consumption at rep aeries, but only a few are important enough to be subject to statistical measurement. Foremost of these is the ratio of runs to capacity, it being generally recognized that because the fuel demands for other than stills are comparatively inelastic, total heat requirements do not increase in direct proportion to crude runs. Thus, in 1937, crude runs of 1,183,440,000 barrels wore 11 percent higher than in 1930; the average operating ratio was 93 percent compared with 79 percent in 1936; but the total heat requirement increased only 4 percent, or from 639,149 billion 3. t. u. in 1936 to 663,966 billion 3. t. u. in 1937.

This paper is one of a series on mining methods and costs being published by the U. S. Bureau of Mines. The operations of the Quartz Hill Mining Co., near Dewey, Mont., afford an interesting example of the cost of mining small bodies of direct shipping ore; they also illustrate the effect of the unavoidable periods of unusually high exploration and development costs in this type of mining upon the cost per ton of producing ore. The importance of skilled geological guidance and the necessity of avoiding unnecessary overhead and capital expense at small mines are shown. Operating conditions at Quartz Hill are typical of those in many other mining districts of southwestern Montana. It is believed that the costs presented here may be of value in the preliminary estimation of costs to be expected by conservative operators under similar conditions elsewhere. The information contained in this paper was obtained during a visit to the Quartz Hill mine in August 1936.

The Fischer-Tropsch synthesis consists of the formation of long-chain hydrocarbons by passage of carbon monoxide-hydrogen mixtures over metal catalysts, usually based on iron, cobalt, nickel, or ruthenium, at temperatures in the range 180°-300° C., and at pressures of 1-15 atmospheres. Although the reaction has been known and studied for more than 20 years, the mechanism by which it occurs is still poorly understood. One approach to understanding is to consider the effect upon the course of the synthesis of variations in each of the important operating variables. Consideration of the experimental data pertaining to these variables may suggest an over-all picture describing the synthesis - a picture which, in turn, would have to be consistent with all the known facts. The first part of this paper will be concerned with such a consideration of operating variables; the second portion will discuss recent work pertaining to the role of metal carbides as intermediates in the synthesis.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a series of delayed blasting experiments at a West Virginia contour coal mine that resulted in smoother highwalls. The 17; were smoother due to reduced overbreak and inherently safer A, to reduced likelihood of rockfall. Reduced overbreak was accomplished by an increase in the highwall hole delays, which changed the effective delay pattern geometry and the direction of burden movement. The blast delays in the highwall holes were 50 to 100 ms longer than the mine's nominal design pattern (flat V, 17- by 42-ms surface delays, 200-ms in-the-hole delay). The burden movement was effectively changed from a 45* angle to 90* with respect to the highwall. The results of the blast delay changes were evaluated using terrestrial photogrammetry to generate vertical profiles at regular intervals. This evaluation showed that delay changes produced generally smoother vertical profiles.

This report supplements an earlier publication on lightweight aggregates of North and South Dakota.3/ The purpose of the investigation was (1) to study the expansion characteristics of large samples of Dakota clays and shales in a 12-inch by 15-foot rotary kiln; and (2) to improve the laboratory bloating test as a tool for predicting the suitability of samples for the rotary-kiln process. This was done by comparing results of the laboratory and kiln tests.

The construction of explosion-proof electric mine equipment for operation in gassy coal mines of the United States was begun as early as 1903. In 1.906, similar equipment with special protective devices was built for export. An investigation of explosion-proof motors was conducted by the United States Bureau of Mines during 1910 and 1911. In other words, this was among the first efforts of the Bureau directed toward the saving of life and property subsequent to its establishment by act of Congress in 1910. In these early motors, those with special devices for relief of explosion pressures predominated. At that time it was generally considered that, by providing for pressure relief, the enclosures could be made lighter in weight because of the lower explosion pressures developed within.

Briefly, a permissible schedule of the Bureau of Mines establishes certain minimum standards for safety; it gives details of test methods adopted to determine whether these standards have been met, and a list of charges for such tests. Any manufacturer has the privilege of submitting his product for test in accordance with the conditions outlined in the schedules. His action is wholly voluntary, for the Federal Government has no jurisdiction as to what equipment shall be used in mines, this authority being left to the various States. When the product of a manufacturer has met the schedule requirements, he is permit¬ted to advertise this fact and to attach an approval plate with the bureau's seal to each machine he makes that is identical in every way with the equipment tested, inspected, and approved by the bureau. This work of approval has grown by the addition of new schedules until at present a great many mines are using one or more classes of permissible equipment, and there is still a demand for other approved apparatus in the ever-widening field of electrically operated machinery. The safety of electrical equipment of this type depends on four fundamentals, namely, (1) correct principles of design; (2) proper assembly of parts at the factory; (3) proper assembly and installation of equipment at the mine; (4) and proper operation and maintenance after installation. The first two factors are within the province of the manufacturer. The bureau either inspects and tests several models of one product, such as electric cap lamps, or one model, such as an electric motor. If this series of tests proves satisfactory, the manufacturer is given the privilege of making other appliances, and assembling them in the same way; the approval plate he attaches is his guaranty that the equipment is identical with the one tested and inspected by the bureau. In making any canvass of secondary metals great care must be exercised to avoid duplication or exaggeration of net consumption. One of the major difficulties is to trace the metal accurately as it passes through the many cycles of manufacture. Greater or less duplication probably occurs in any canvass. The manufacturer of tin plate, for instance, purchases primary pig tin exclusively as a raw material. Most of it goes into the coating on the steel sheet, but a substantial part emerges in the form of byproducts such as scruffs and drosses. These are sold to other plants, where they are used in the manufacture of alloys and chemicals. Alloys and chemicals, however, are not necessarily articles for final consumption. The alloy may be sold in ingot form to a bearing manufacturer, who, in turn may produce some scrap, which he may sell to still' another plant that may make still other products. There is a considerable return of tin in the form of waste products from chemicals sold to the silk industry. Even tin plate does not represent an ultimate use of tin because the tin-can maker produces large amounts of clippings, which are sold to detinning plants, where the tin is recovered and used again for some other purpose. Thus the degree of duplication in consumption statistics depends on the point in the industrial cycle where consumption is measured.

"INTRODUCTION Adoption of rubber-tire shuttle cars underground in conjunction with mobile coal-loading machines has introduced new problems in the control of dust on mine roadways. Where this type of loading and transportation is used, development and extraction are generally rapid, with the result that much coal is spilled from the shuttle cars during normal operation, Coal in the roadways from this source and from sloughing of the ribs is ground to fine dust by the wheels of the 'shuttle cars and by the treads of the loading and mining machines. The coal dust usually is somewhat contaminated by pulverized rock, and the mixture could not be loaded with the run-of-mine coal without undue contamination of the product even if it were cleaned up promptly.The presence of large quantities of fine, loose dust, which is constantly stirred up and kept in suspension in air by the traffic, constitutes a grave explosion hazard, reduces visibility along the roadways, and is physiologically harmful to the workmen who breathe the air. From the operating standpoint the loose material is undesirable along the roadways because it provides poor traction for the trucks and thereby increases wear and power consumption. The dust-explosion hazard could be eliminated or reduced by frequent application of sufficient rock dust on the roadbed; but this would not remedy the other difficulties, and in fact it might intensify them. Where practicable, the most direct and effective safety measure is to clean up and remove promptly all dust that forms and settles on the roadways. Unfortunately, in many cases this procedure is not feasible. A third Suggested remedy is to prevent dispersal of the dust into the air and to promote its consolidation on the floor by wetting the dust particles.During the past few years several mines have used calcium chloride on shuttle-car roadways to allay the dust thereon. When exposed to the' humid atmosphere of the mine this salt absorbs Moisture from the air and deliquesces, and in this way wets the dust on the floor of the roadway. In a survey conducted in coal mines in southern West Virginia and in eastern Kentucky where calcium chloride has been in use, somewhat conflicting re- ports were received regarding the merits of the application, and several operators have abandoned the practice either because of actual or assumed disadvantages. The purpose of the study described in this report was to collect and correlate evidence and, on the basis of experimental data obtained in the field and in laboratory tests, to present a clearer picture of the factors involved in the allaying of dust by use of salts."

The amenability of titaniferous slags and domestic mineral concentrates to chlorination was determined in a 6 - inch diameter fluidized bed chlorinator . Ilmenites from Valley County , Idaho ; Aiken , S.C ,; Trail Ridge , Fla .; and MacIntyre , N.Y .; and a titaniferous magnetite from Iron Mountain , Wyo . , were used in preparing the slags . The domestic minerals tested were an ilmenite concentrate from Valley County , Idaho , and a rutile concentrate from Magnet Cove , Ark . A high - grade Australian rutile was used as a standard for comparison . The impurity content of the slags and minerals tested , which was the most critical factor affecting their performance , was dependent on the geographical source of the material . All of the materials tested were amenable to chlorination in a fluidized bed although some required special operating conditions . Titanium extractions and chlorine utilization were over 90 percent for most of the slags and the Australian rutile . The Valley County , Idaho , ilmenite performed well in the reactor despite its 34 percent iron content .

Future coal mining systems will be able to cut from crosscut to crosscut where advances could exceed 100 ft. However, limitations arise when ventilating such mining systems. In deep advance mining, there would be no workers at the face to advance ventilation tubing or curtain manually. Traditional methods also provide no means for maintaining face ventilation after the miner backs away from the face. U.S. Bureau of Mines research is studying means to provide effective ventilation at cut depths beyond the current limit of 40 ft. Several innovative ventilation schemes are currently being considered. One such method is the use of a jet fan to ventilate a deep cut. A jet fan is simply a freestanding fan using little or no ducting to direct the ventilation flow. Jet fan testing in a 90-ft entry revealed that higher exit velocities and greater penetration depth occurred when various configurations were used to confine and direct the air flow. Additional testing also indicated that 2,200 cfm of fresh air was delivered to the face 90 ft distant when a check curtain was used to limit entrainment around the fan. Without this curtain, this quantity dropped to only 1,000 cfm This testing indicated that a jet fan was capable of providing ventilation to a distant face area. It also highlighted potential problems, such as recirculation at the fan and reentrainment in the jet flow. Despite these potential problems, jet fans may be adequate for ventilating cuts exceeding 40 ft.

This report describes a method developed by the Bureau of Mines for sealing horizontal degasification holes so that they do not create a gas explosion hazard when intercepted by mining. A cement slurry is pumped into the hole through an injection pipe that extends to the back of the hole. Pumping continues until the slurry returns through the annulus to the hole collar. The hole is then shut in and the grout allowed to harden. Application of the procedure to six horizontal degasification holes at Eastern Associated Coal Corp.'s Honey Run shaft is discussed.

In recent years many mining companies have recognized that their chance for continued economic survival depends on the adaptation of technological advances in their operations. Increased productivity through new developments in mining methods and improvements in equipment has made mining and processing of lower grade ores possible. Cost analysis has produced accurate data on the costs for development, production, and processing of ore. All of these changes and cost studies have shown the necessity for increased accuracy in determining the grade of ore. Methods of estimating grade in a mineral deposit have not kept pace with the technological advances in the other areas. The same methods are in use today as in the past. Experience and judgment are major criteria of accuracy and the results are highly subjective. In 1953, as part of its research program to develop a better understanding of fundamentals of mining technology, the Federal Bureau of Mines began a sampling method research project at its Denver Mining Research Center. The basic objective of the project is to investigate sampling methods and to study the adaptation of the techniques of statistical analysis to mine sampling.

This publication is an economic evaluation of the Bureau of Mines electrolytic process for recovering lead from scrap lead-acid batteries. In this process, scrap batteries are crushed and separated into metal and sludge fractions. The metal fraction is cast as anodes and electro- refined. Lead in the sludge fraction is converted to lead carbonate by reaction with an ammonium carbonate-ammonium bisulfite solution. The lead carbonate is then dissolved in a fluosilicic acid electrolyte from which pure lead metal is electrowon. A cost estimate is presented for a plant capable of processing 10,000 scrap batteries per day. The fixed capital cost for this plant is estimated to he $14 million on a fourth quarter 1984 basis. Operating costs are estimated to be $0.15/lb Pb recovered. Assuming a lead selling price of $0.17/lb, the interest rate of return on investment after taxes is 11 pct. A lead selling price of about $0.21/lb is needed to obtain a 20-pct-interest rate of return.
