The analysis of in-mine grounding systems began with an extensive literature search which is still in progress. About a dozen articles have been found which deal directly with grounding problems on low voltage power systems or mine power systems. These systems have special grounding problems because normal load currents can be nearly as large as many types of fault currents. Information has been collected on the influence of cable spacing) conduit geometry, location of nearby conducting structures, etc., on the magnitude and path of fault current. Many other articles have been found which are less directly related to mine ground system analysis. The in-mine ground system analysis team has also inspected portions of two mine power systems to become familiar with the practices used in grounding. One electrical engineer and several other mine personnel have been interviewed concerning mine power system grounding practice. Already several aspects of the mine grounding system have been marked as requiring special attention.

Work has been carried out under Bureau of Mines Contract HO 395132 to develop improved sensor cells for use in direct-reading detectors and diffusion exposure meters. A pumped CO sensor cell was developed which has a shorter response time, improved temperature cycle characteristics, and improved linearity and stability at high CO concentrations. Diffusion CO sensor cells have shown good response level stability and linearity up to 1000 ppm. In addition, a new sensor cell catalyst has been developed for NO2 sensor cells which has a much shorter response time and improved response stability characteristics.

The Bureau of Mines sampled surface exposures of podiform chromite in the Caribou Mountain-Melozitna ultramafic belt in the Kokrines-Hodzana Highlands, central Alaska. Fieldwork began in 1979 as part of an assessment of the mineral potential of lands adjacent to the trans-Alaska pipeline corridor, for the Bureau of Land Management, and continued through 1981 as a Bureau of Mines investigation. The belt comprises six complexes of which the three closest to the pipeline corridor were investigated. Concentrations of chromite disseminated in dunite host rock make up mineralized intervals ranging in thickness from less than an inch to 5 ft and in grade from 3 to 23 pct chromium. The largest occurrence has an exposed strike length of 80 ft. Bulk surface samples were collected from 10 of these exposures, and beneficiation tests on the samples produced concentrates of metallurgical, refractory, and subindustrial grades. This paper, which describes mining mothods at International Minerals & Chemical Corp, 'e. potash mine. in. Eddy. County, N. Mex., is one of a sories being prepared by the Mining Branch of the Bureau of Minos. on mining method a and practicos in, various mining districts of the United States. The mine shafts and. surface plant or International Minerals & Chemical Corp. are situated. in. sec.. 12, T. 22 S., R. 29 E., N. M. P. M., about 26-1/2 miles by paved highway east of the city of Carlsbad (figs. 1, 2, and 3). A spur line of the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad connects the mine with the Clovia-Pecos branch of the same road near Loving, a few miles south of Carlsbad. This spur also serves the refinery of United Staics Potash Co. This report gives. the history and describes the geology of the district. Methods of prospecting, exploration, sampling, and estimation of tonnage and values are explained; development and mining methods are discussed in con- siderable detail; transportation, ventilation and drainage are outlined; safety measures are noted; and the wage scale and organization are mentioned.

New data on zirconium tetraiodide (ZrI4) have resulted from high-temperature enthalpy and X-ray powder diffraction studies conducted by the Bureau of Mines. These studies were undertaken as part of the Bureau's efforts to provide important thermodynamic data essential to the advancement of mineral resources technologies that can be employed with minimal energy requirements and minimal environmental degradation. Enthalpies were measured with a copper-block drop calorimeter. No transitions or other anomalies were found. Tabulated values are given from 298.15 to 772 K for relative enthalpy, heat capacity, entropy, and Gibbs energy function. Enthalpies are expressed in equation form and combined with data from the literature to calculate values of the standard enthalpy of formation and the Gibbs energy of formation. X-ray powder diffraction data indicate that ZrI4 is primitive cubic with a lattice parameter of 11.79 A and is isostructural with stannic iodide (SnI4).

The first bulletin (245)3 in this series, which appeared in 1932, summarized the entropy values then available for the elements and inorganic compounds, results being listed for some 150 substances. In the interim advances in the realms of spectroscopy applicable to the determination of thermodynamic properties and in the development of methods of calculation therefrom have added many highly accurate values. Moreover, through the efforts of Prof. W. M. Latimer (286) and his coworkers, satisfactory entropy values are now available for all but a few of the common inorganic ions in aqueous solution. At the same time rapid progress has continued in the study of low-temperature heat capacities in several laboratories, In addition, compilation and correlation of data pertaining to vapor pressures (247), thermodynamic properties of carbonates (258), thermodynamic properties of sulfur and its inorganic compounds (250), and the thermodynamic properties of metal carbides and nitrides (251), which were published as members of this series, have yielded many values. As a result, over 500 usable entropy values for inorganic substances may now be tabulated. This bulletin originally was planned as a second revision of the first member of this series, the first revision (249) having appeared in 1936; however, because of requests for the explanatory section of the first bulletin from those teaching thermodynamics, it was decided to com¬bine the information in the first bulletin and its revision with the data that have appeared since 1935 and to repeat the explanatory material in somewhat more detail. The purpose of this bulletin is therefore to give the available values of the entropies at 298.1° K. of the elements and inorganic compounds, together with enough explanation of the methods employed in calculating entropies to make the results comprehensible.

The fluorite, deposit discussed herein occurs on a property known as the Snowball and comprises five contiguous mining claims in Maricopa County, Ariz. Attention of the Bureau was first directed to this property early in 1944 through .a request by D. B. Powell, original locator; to investigate his property as a possible source of fluorite and one that might 'Warrant exploration by the Bureau. The property was examined by two Bureau engineers, Thomas C. Denton and Geo. W. Huseman. It was decided to investigate the occurrence further by trenching, sampling, and diamond drilling. Work began on May 15, 194. Preparatory work, trenching and surface sampling, was supervised by Geo. W. Huseman. Drilling was in charge of R. M. Grantham. The project was completed August 8, 1944.

This report summarizes the results of a one-year agreement for research on the electromagnetic environment in coal mines, which was conceived as the beginning of a long term cooperative program between ITS and the Bureau of Mines. The concepts on which it was originally based are a result of the report on mine rescue and survival by the Committee on Mine Rescue and Survival Techniques of the National Academy of Engineering, dated March 1970. This report drew particular attention to the need for improved communications during and following mine disasters. In particular, the outstanding problems identified were the location of, and communication with, trapped miners. Some tentative solutions, generally involving long-wave electromagnetic signals, were offered. Consideration of the problems of disaster location and communication soon leads to consideration of the communications techniques (or lack of them) for use under normal mining conditions. In particular, if a disaster communication and/or location system is to be readily available and operable under disaster conditions, it should also be usable during mining operations. In this way operators can become familiar enough with the system to operate it during disaster conditions, as well as provide a mechanism for regular testing.

"INTRODUCTION During the course of the investigation of the occurrence of manganese deposits in the western United States, examining 'engineers of the Bureau of Mines collected samples from seven manganese properties in Grand and beery Counties, Utah. These were supplemented by five samples submitted by property owners. Since all of the ores were too low-grade for use in producing ferromanganese for steel manufacture, some means of beneficiation was required to produce marketable concentrates, and metallurgical studies were made on each of the samples.Most of the ores Investigated are similar in one respect: At least part of the 'manganese oxide areas contains minute inclusions of gangue. This occurrence materially enhances the complexity of the ore, partly by .increasing the complexity of mineral association, but largely through making manganese-quartz liberation more difficult. In such ores, there is a marked tendency for the manganese minerals to be retained as shells or coatings on the surfaces of quartz particles when crushed. Particles of this type represent considerable loss of manganese in tailing, if gravity-concentration methods are employed, or tend to' float, thus carrying an appreciable quantity of gangue into the concentrate, if treated by flotation.Plus 48-percent manganese sinters were made from some of the ores tested, but, in general, intimate association of manganese minerals with silica limited the degree of beneficiation attainable."

Two different techniques were used to make measurements of the absolute value of electromagnetic noise in an operating coal mine, Robena No. 4, located near Waynesburg, Pennsylvania. One technique measures noise over the entire electromagnetic spectrum of interest for brief tine periods. With present instrumentation, the spectrum can be covered from 40 Hz to 400 kHz. It is recorded using broad-band analog magnetic tape, and the noise data are later transformed to give spectral plots. The other technique records noise envelopes at several discrete frequencies for a sufficient amount of tine to provide amplitude probability distributions. The specific measured results are given in a number of spectral plots and amplitude probability distribution plots. The general results are that at frequencies below 10 kHz, power line noise within the mine is severe. Impulsive noise is severe near arcing trolleys, and at lower frequencies near any transmission line. Carrier trolley phone signals and harmonics are strong throughout the mine whenever the trolley phone is in operation. Additional information beyond that included in this report may be obtained from the authors, who are with the Electromagnetics Division of the National Bureau of Standards.

This study was undertaken to obtain some fundamental information about hazardous mixtures of coal dust and methane (firedamp) likely to occur in mines. Fuel concentration limits for ignition of mixtures of coal dust, methane, and air have been determined by a hot-gas ignition method. The limiting concentration of each of the two fuels was usually less than that corresponding to its lean flammability limit in air. The lean limits of flammability of coal dust vary with the type and size of the dust; in this study coal dust concentrations were less than 80 mg/liter. Ignition jets were turbulent pulses (emerging from a channel of 0.5 cm diam) resulting from explosions of stoichiometric mixtures of methane, oxygen, and nitrogen, Temperatures of the ignition jets were varied by changing the oxygen index (OI) = O2/(02 + Nj2) of the primary methane-oxygen-nitrogen mixture (adiabatic flame temperatures from 2,000° to 3,000° K). The objectives of the study were to establish quantitative relations between concentrations of each fuel at ignition limits of hybrid mixtures and to study the mechanism of ignition of these hybrid mixtures by hot turbulent gases, Empirical equations were fitted to concentrations for four coals, namely) Pittsburgh Seam (sizes A, B, and C), Sewell No.2 Seam, pocahontas No.3 Seam, and anthracite. Equivalences of coal dust to methane were computed from these equations; equivalence being defined as -Ac/Am, where c is the coal dust concentration and m is the methane concentration, each in milligrams per liter of air. It was found that the equivalence increases as the temperature of the hot-gas jet decreases. In general, the equivalence is also an inverse function of volatile content of the coal and a direct function of the particle size, However, volatile con-tent in itself is not a sufficient correlating variable, nor is the specific surface area of the coal dust.

This report covers the activities of a feasibility study of fiber optics technology fur use in mines. The objective of the study was to evaluate, both technically and cost-wise, the possible use of fiber optic technology for underground mine communication and monitoring systems. The first phase of the study was devoted to the collection of information on the present underground mine communication systems and monitoring techniques, and the status of applicable fiber optic technology. In the second ph se of the study, a communication and monitoring system for a hypothetical underground coal mine was designed and the costs estimated. The significant findings and conclusions are presented.

THE MINERAL INDUSTRIES had a near-record year in 1950, as rising industrial activity in general, greatly accentuated by the outbreak of hostilities in Korea in midyear, called forth increasing supplies of mineral fuels and raw materials. The aggregate value of mineral production was second only to that in 1948, and the aggregate physical volume was exceeded only in 1948 and 1947. Lower coal production accounted for the failure to surpass these earlier years. Growth of production was fairly constant throughout the year, especially for crude petroleum; its physical output for the year as a whole exceeded that of 1949 by 7 percent. According to Federal Reserve Board indexes, other relative gains were 16 percent for coal, 9 percent for fuels in general, and 17 percent for metals. The increase for mining in general was of the order of 10 percent. This was not quite as large as the general increase in industrial production but clearly reflected the total-industrial trend (see fig. 1).

Increasing use of continuous miners, especially the boring type, has focused attention on the inadequacy of face ventilation in coal mines. The bulk of the machine, the rapid advance of working faces, and the increased liberation of methane from the larger expanse of freshly exposed coal surfaces have created ventilation problems that were unknown with conventional mining equipment. Ignition of gas, especially that caused by machine bits striking hard rock or pyritic inclusions, have increased at an alarming rate. As the mines penetrate beds under thicker cover at an ever-increasing rate of face advance, this problem will probably increase unless face ventilation is improved. A previous survey, described in Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations 5414, Auxiliary Ventilation of Continuous Miner Places, disclosed that auxiliary fans with tubing generally improved circulation of air and removal of gas at the face. The study here reported attempts to examine, face ventilation at various mines and to note any plan or innovation of. air coursing that industry might adopt to reduce the danger of gas ignition. The Bureau of Mines midget impinger dust-sampling apparatus was described first in 1937.4/ Two supplementary reports5/6 were published in 1938. These reports are now out of print. The material published previously is combined in this paper to make information on this device available for distribution. The impinger was developed by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the United States Public Health Service in 1922. The underlying principle of this instruments is based on impingement land wetting, of the dust particles by drawing air through a nozzle at high velocity onto a smooth surface under a bubbling column of liquid. The dust particles are retained in the liquid. The apparatus has been used widely and permissible limits of dustiness have teen established in the United States on the basis of results obtained with this device in correlation with medical studies. However, it has been criticized for its bulk, weight, and power requirements.
