A removable-jacket distortion apparatus was constructed and used to measure distortion coefficients for two high-pressure vessels. The measured distortion coefficients were used to compute distortion coefficients for volumes VI and (V1+V2) of a 1,000-atmosphere Burnett compressibility apparatus for the temperature range 0° to 75° C. Young?s modulus for Armco 17-4 PH stainless steel, heat treated to condition H1150-M, was computed from experimentally determined distortion coefficients. A 10-to 14-percent correction to the values obtained for Young's modulus may be required because pressure vessel end effects were neglected. The distortion coefficients of the compressibility apparatus are believed to be accurate to about 1 percent.

This report presents production and delivered costs for coal exports from the five major Western coal-exporting countries: Australia, Canada. Colombia, South Africa, and the United States. Cost data were compiled from visits to 43 mines by U.S. Bureau of Mines engineers between 1985 and 1990. All report costs are in January 1989 U.S. dollars per short ton. Production costs for raw coal are divided into mining and regulatory categories. Costs are broken down by type of cost, type of mine. and country. Scheduled operating and capital costs for raw coal were processed by the Bureau's MINSIM discounted cash flow program to determine total production costs calculated at 0% and 15% discounted cash flow rates of return (DCFROR). Delivered costs are for salable coal delivered to various markets. Costs are broken down by supply country, market, and type of cost. Scheduled operating and capital costs for salable coal were processed by the Bureau's MINSIM discounted cash-flow program to determine total salable coal costs at 0% DCFROR. Added to total salable coal costs were transportation and port costs to get delivered costs. Comparative overview information on the coal industries of the five study countries are appended. This appendix includes information on industry economics and exports, production and reserves, and coal industry issues.

The Bureau of Mines is conducting research on Fe-based alloys using Si and Al additions to reduce the Cr required for heat-resisting appli-cations. Part of this research is being done to evaluate alloys containing (8-10)Cr-(10-14)Ni-(0-8.5)Si-(0-4) Al to determine which of these alloys have austenitic structures, as well as fabrication properties and oxidation resistance sufficient to substitute for type 304 stainless steel. Based on initial results, an Fe-lOCr-11Ni-5Si alloy and an Fe-8Cr-13Ni-5Si alloy were selected for evaluation of oxidati.on, stress rupture, and tensile properties. Both alloys have oxidation resistance at 7000 and 8000 C that is better than that of type 304 stainless steel. The stress rupture strengths are less than that of type 304 stainless steel but significantly better than that of commercial heat-resisting steels with similar Cr contents. Yield strengths of the alloys were equivalent to that of type 304. Both alloys had high tensile strengths comparable to those of stainless steels that transform to martensite during straining (e.g., type 301). These alloys have weld-hot-cracking resistance comparable to that of type 304 stainless steel. This initial study shows that Si has potential as a substitute for Cr in stainless steels for heat-resisting applications.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated two real-time light-scattering dust monitors by measuring their response to Pittsburgh Seam coal dust and Arizona road dust (ARD). Both monitors, the model PDS-l, a personal dust sensor, and the model PCD-l, a digital dust indicator, are made in Japan by Sibata Scientific Ltd. Tests were conducted inside a laboratory aerosol chamber designed to maintain a uniform spatial distribution of the test dust. PDS-l and PCD-l measurements of concentrations for each test dust were averaged over 4-h test periods and compared with simultaneous gravimetric measurements. Both dust monitors responded linearly with mass concentration with both coal dust and ARD. However, the linear response of the PDS-l differed from that of the PCD-l for both dusts.

High-temperature thermodynamic data have, in recent years, become increasingly important for the extractive metallurgist. The extraction of metals from their ores previously was based on trial and error methods, involving hours of testing and often costly equipment fabrication. Using thermodynamic data it is frequently possible to predict the feasibility of a proposed metallurgical process as well as the optimum operating conditions for the process with reasonable accuracy. Such predictions can save consider-able tim~ and expense. Widespread use of thermodynamic analyses has been handicapped by lack of dependable experimental data. Investigators, notably K. K. Kelley (4)4. have devoted many years to determining and compiling such data. These investigators, although prolific in their production of thermodynamic values, have been unable to meet all the needs of industry and other branches of science. This becomes obvious when one considers the aeronautical and nuclear fields, in which previously unimportant, therefore uninvestigated, substances have become of prime importance.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has evaluated the potential availability of nickel from 36 deposits or districts in 16 market-economy countries (MECs), analyzing more than 95 percent of production in those countries. This study indicates the quantity of nickel available on the basis of net production costs and total costs with a 0-pct and a 10-pct discounted cash flow rate of return (DCFROR). Costs of production are expressed in dollars per pound of recovered nickel. The study also indicates sensitivities of the cost of production to energy, labor, and other factors. The studied deposits and properties contain approximately 33 Mmt of recoverable nickel. About 26 Mmt of nickel is potentially recoverable from laterite deposits, of which 4.5 Mmt can be produced at $2.50/lb or less with a 0-pct DCFROR. Approximately 7 Mmt of nickel is potentially recoverable from sulfide deposits, of which about 6.3 Mint could be produced at $2.50/lb or less at a 0-pct DCFROR. The price of nickel averaged above $6.00/lb in 1988. Sensitivity studies performed for both laterite and sulfide deposits indicate that the total cost of producing nickel from laterites is most sensitive to increases in energy costs and that the total cost of producing nickel from sulfide deposits is most sensitive to increases in labor costs; sulfides are also affected by changes in revenues from byproducts.

"It has been recently learned that certain foreign manufacturers are offering far importation into this country detonators at greatly reduced prices, some of these detonators being of such low grade (No.4), that their use would greatly increase the dangers in blasting.Detonators and electric detonators are used in initiating the explosion of the various high explosives that are now so extensively employed in a great variety of mining operations. Originally a large number of different grades (or ""strengths"") of detonators and electric detonators were marketed, the grade number indicating the weight of the charge of fulminating material contained in the copper case of the detonator. As late as 1914, a report of the Bureau of Mines (Bulletin 80, A primer an explosives for metal miners) shows that grades Nos. 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8, containing from 0.54 to 2.00 grams each, were being offered for use. However, the writer bad observed as early as 1896, when the more insensitive types of explosives like nitro-substitution explosives began to be introduced for use in mining and other blasting operations, that use of a high-grade detonator was essential to insure certainty of discharge."

Under terms of cooperative agreements, the Federal Bureau of Mines Inter-mountain Experiment Station assisted the General Services Administration (GSA) in operating the manganese-ore purchasing depots at Deming. N. Mex., and Wenden, Ariz. A resident metallurgist stationed at the depots directed sampling of the ore lots for assaying, took samples for amenability testing, calculated acceptances for payments to shippers, and served as technical adviser to the depot manager. The Intermountain Experiment Station at Salt Lake City, Utah, tested the amenability of the ores to determine how much of the manganese could be recovered in concentrates assaying a minimum of 40 percent manganese (Mn) and containing a maximum of 16 percent iron (Fe), 15 percent silica (Si02) plus alumina (AI203), 0.3 percent phosphorus (P), and I percent copper (Cu) plus lead (Pb) plus zinc (Zn). All chemical analyses of the ores and test products were done at Salt Lake City. In all, 567 ore lots submitted to the Deming depot were tested by flotation to determine their amenability to concentration into specification-grade material; 421 lots were amenable, and 146 were unamenable, primarily because of high copper content or excessive silica or iron in the flotation concentrate. Chemical analyses totaling 42,700 were made on the ores submitted to the Deming depot and on the products of the amenability-test program.

4.1 Introduction Using methods outlined in previous sections of this report, programs were written and/or obtained to: i) select best combinations of "a" and "k" for up to 8 different value parameters, ii) calculate available and unavailable ore tonnages and other statistics, and iii) produce contour maps of various parameter characteristics and available tonnages on a line printer. All the above programs are written in Fortran IV for execu¬tion on IBM 360/370 computers. 4.2 Calculation of Coal Reserves The Ore Reserve program suite consists of the following sections: (a) UNIT 1: This unit is a subroutine called by Unit 2 to determine values for "a" and "k" from the given data. (b) UNIT 2: These programs calculate ore reserves and are composed of a main program and several sub¬routines. Mine drainage and mine reclamation are topics of major interest to the mining industry, federal and local governments, and the general public. This publication and its companion three volumes are the proceedings of a conference held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, April 24-29, 1994. There were twelve sessions (69 papers) that dealt with mine drainage, including modeling, geochemistry, prediction, treatment, control strategies, characterization, hydrology, and case studies. These sessions comprise volumes 1 and 2. The six sessions (34 papers) that dealt with reclamation and revegetation of disturbed lands are included in volume 3. Volume 4 includes the six sessions (34 papers) that dealt with such topical issues as fires at abandoned mine sites, subsidence, hydrology, mine wastes, and policy. Poster session presentations are represented by 49 papers and 92 abstracts that have been placed in the back of volumes 2, 3, and 4, consistent with the subject of that volume.

A high-B.t.u, gas can be synthesized by the catalytic methanation of a mixture of 2.5 to 3 parts of hydrogen to 1 part of carbon monoxide, obtained in the gasification of coal, using a steel catalyst followed by Raney nickel in a hot-gas-recycle system. Conversion of 99 percent of the H2+CO yields a fuel gas with a heating value of 983 to 1130 B.t.u. per cubic foot containing 78 to 96 percent methane, no carbon monoxide, and very small amounts of unsaturated hydrocarbons. With the steel catalyst alone, conversions were 85 to 90 percent, giving a fuel gas of 810 to 868 B.t.u, per cubic foot, or 847 to 975 B.t.u. on a C02-free basis. INTRODUCTION In 1948 the U.S, marketed production of natural gas was 5.15 trillion cubic feet; by 1958 it had reached 11.0 trillion cubic feet, a rate of growth of 8 percent annually. 4 5 Although demand is expected to increase less rapidly, by 1966 it may reach 16 trillion cubic feet, based on an estimated 4.7 percent annual increase.6

This paper describing the milling practice at the concentrator of the Harmony Mines Co. is one of a series being; prepared by the Bureau of Mines on milling methods and costs in the United States. For the period February 15, 1929, to June 1, 1929, the concentrator treated 200 tons of copper ore per day containing 3.84 per cent copper and recovered 99.2 per cent of the total copper in concentrates averaging 26.61 per cent copper. Milling practice at the Harmony Mines is in most respects similar to the usual practice at the average flotation concentrator producing bulk flotation concentrates. The exceptionally high recovery is due to a number of minor conditions. These minor details will be stressed throughout this paper.

Cerium and thorium sulfides have found use as crucible materials for melting certain radioactive metals. However, thermodynamic treatment of these sulfides has been hampered by lack of experimentally derived entropy values. This Bureau of Mines report describes heat-capacity measurements between 51° and 298° K, and entropy evaluations at 298.15° K, for cerium monosulfide (CeS), cerium sesquisulfide (Ce2S3), and thorium disulfide (THS2). The entropy values, with Literature results for the heats of formation, are used to obtain free energies of formation at 298.15°K. MATERIALS The samples used in this work were supplied by Prof, Leo Brewer of the Department of Chemistry, University of California. The methods of preparation and some of the physical and chemical properties of these sulfides were given by Eastman and coworkers.3 4/ Chemical analyses, conducted in our laboratory, gave the following results:

All known resources within the four proposed RARE II additions to the Yolla Bolly-Middle Eel Wilderness in northwestern California occur in the Gig Butte-Shinbone study area (fig. 1). No mineral resources are Figure 1.--NEAR HERE. known in the East Fork, Murphy blade, or Wilderness Contiguous units. About 2,400 tons (2,177 t) of subeconomic manganese resources averaging 9.5 percent manganese have been estimated at the Blue Jay Mine in the Big Butte-Shinbone unit. In addition about 9,700 tons (8,793 t) of subeconomic chromium-nickel-cobalt resources in thin laterite soil at the Grubstake Prospect contain about 1.27 percent chromium oxide, 0.45 percent nickel, and 0.03 percent cobalt. Adjacent Ultramafic rock outcrops have pods averaging 2.5 percent chromium oxide (Cr203); one pod contains about 40 tons (36 t) of indicated subeconomic resources.

This study is organized under the auspices of the Metal/Nonmetal Diesel Partnership formed by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), the National Mining Association (NMA), the National Stone Sand and Gravel Association (NSSGA), the United Steel Workers of America (USWA) and the MARG Diesel Coalition. The ultimate objective of the study is to reduce the exposure of underground miners to diesel particulate matter (DPM) and gases, and to help in fulfilling the partnership’s goal of identifying technically and economically feasible controls to curtail particulate matter emissions from existing and new diesel powered vehicles in underground metal and nonmetal mines. The majority of current knowledge on the performance of the diesel particulate filter (DPF) systems and other control technologies is based on studies done under laboratory conditions, the results then being applied the results to on-highway vehicles. According to the best knowledge of the authors, only two comprehensive studies that were conducted recently at Noranda’s Bathurst Mining and Smelting Mine and International Nickel Company’s Stobie Mine under the sponsorship of the Diesel Emissions Evaluation Program [McGinn 2001, Bugarski and Schnakenberg 2001, Bugarski and Schnakenberg 2002] offered some insight into the problems associated with the deployment of modern DPFs to underground mining vehicles. The U.S. mining industry has expressed concern that this rather limited knowledge base is not sufficient to help them comply with the rule limiting DPM exposure of underground metal and nonmetal miners [30 CFR 57.5060 2001]. The partnership agreed that a series of comprehensive field evaluations of DPFs in several underground mines was needed to determine their viability of DPF systems and establish confidence in their performance. The first in this series of studies was the one conducted in Stillwater Mining Company’s Nye Mine, Nye, Montana. This study was conducted in two phases. The objective of the first phase was to establish the effectiveness of the selected technologies in reducing diesel emissions by using an isolated zone methodology. The objective of the second phase was to assess the effectiveness of diesel particulate filters in controlling the exposure of underground miners in actual production scenarios. As part of the first phase of the study a series of tests were conducted at Nye Mine from May 19, 2003 until May 30, 2003. The results of Phase I of the study are presented in this report.

The computer program described in this user's guide provides for the static, three-dimensional, linear and nonlinear analysis of structural and geological systems by the finite element method. The guide describes the capabilities and general features of the program and shows how input is prepared. A number of recent advances in finite element theory and computer technology are incorporated in the program. Nonlinear material properties are provided for, including isotropic, anisotropic, and time-dependent material properties, gravity loading, simulation of a sequence of excavation or construction, and a slip or joint element. The finite elements include beam, rod, axisymmetric and plane quadrilateral, hexahedron, thick shell, axisymmetric and plane joint, and a three-dimensional joint. The program also has an automatic mesh generator to minimize user input preparation for continuum finite element meshes.

Coke Since the beginning of manufacturing of metallurgical coke in the United States, which dates from about 1859, Pennsylvania has main tamed supremacy in coke production Available statistics for the year 1880 show an output of 3,338,300 short tons, which was neatly trebled by the end of the succeeding 10 years. From this time on the increase was steady, though not rapid, and in 1922 the total production was 13,991,892 tons, which is approximately 37 per cent of the total coke production of the United States. The main reason for the rapid development of the coke industry in Pennsylvania lies in the abundance of coals particularly adapted to beehive coking, for which purpose the Pittsburgh bed in the Connellsville district has long been looked upon as standard At first practically all metallurgical coke was made in beehive ovens, the only exception being the short lived and wasteful method of coking in piles, byproduct owns did not make then appearance until after 1893 The suitability of a beehive coking coal cannot be accurately predicted from its chemical analysis, but it can be said, perhaps, that the volatile matter should be about 32 per cent, and that the oxygen content should not be mole than 10 pet cent or less than 4 per cent The sulphur and phosphorus content should be small-not over 1 25 per cent sulphur and under 0 02 pen cent phosphorus-and the ash content should not be over 7 per cent The Pittsburgh bed at Connellsvnlle fills these requirements well, as may be seen from the following representative analysis. In the United States water pollution resulting from mining activities has long been recognized as a major environmental problem Mine drainage pollution results from many types of mining activities and includes both physical (i e , sedimentation) and chemical (i e , acidification, metal contamination, etc ) pollutants Active and abandoned surface and underground mines, mineral processing plants, mine and processing plant waste disposal areas, haulage roads, and tailing ponds are typical sources of mine related water pollution (130) One of the most serious pollution problems arising from mining activities is acid mine drainage resulting from the chemical reaction of sulfide minerals (commonly iron sulfides) and air in the presence of water Acid mine drainage is commonly associated with coal and hard rock mining areas in the United States In general the more serious and extensive acid mine drainage problems exist in the more humid coal regions east of the Mississippi River (11) In 1964 the U S Department of the Interior, Fish and Wildlife Service, reported that acid mine drainage adversely affected fish and wildlife habitat in 9,477 kilometers (5,890 miles) of streams and 6,062 hectares (14,967 acres) of impoundments in 20 states in the United States (64) Of the total affected waters, coal mining operations accounted for 97 percent of the acid mine drainage pollution reported for streams and 93 percent of that reported for impoundments In 1970 more than 19,308 kilometers (12,000 miles) of streams in the United States were reportedly significantly degraded by mining related pollution (130) Of the total affected kilometers, 16,920 kilometers (10,516 miles) or approximately 88 percent were located in the Appalachian coal region (Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, eastern Kentucky, Tennessee, Maryland, and Alabama) In addition, more than 965 kilometers (600 miles) of streams reportedly were degraded by coal mining in states in the Illinois, Western Interior, and Rocky Mountain coal regions The remaining portion of the stream pollution resulted from the mining of (1) copper (california, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, Tennessee, Virginia, and Wyoming), (2) lead and zinc (Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Missouri, Montana, Oklahoma, and Tennessee), (3) uranium (Rocky Mountain States), (4) iron (Lake Superior iron region), (5) sand and gravel (all states), (6) phosphate (Florida and other states), (7) gold (Alaska), (8) bauxite and barite (Arkansas), and (9) molybdenum, gold, and other metals (Colorado) Abandoned mines and abandoned mine waste disposal areas contribute a large portion of the total pollution resulting from mining activities Numerous abandoned underground mines are located throughout the United States and many are discharging mine drainage pollutants In 1966 the U S Bureau of Mines estimated that more than 88,000 inactive and abandoned underground mines were in existance (126) A listing of these mines by state is presented in Table 1 0-1 More recent estimates indicate that this list is incomplete In Colorado alone there is

The temperature dependency of the low-density viscosity coefficients, ?°T, of helium and of nitrogen, 100° to 1,000° K, is correlated with empirical equations, and the temperature and composition dependencies of the low-density viscosity coefficients, ?°T, of helium-nitrogen mixtures are correlated with the Chapman-Enskog expressions by using the Lennard-Jones (6:12) potential function. The residual viscosity, ?T,P - ?°T (the difference between the viscosity of a compressed gas and the dilute gas at a given temperature), was found to be a function of the thermal pressure coefficient, (?P/?T)V, and two parameters, a and 1, which are characteristic of gas composition. The equation ?T, P = ?°T + a [(?P/?T)V]ß represented 1,340 higher pressure experimental viscosity values with a mean absolute deviation of 0.86 percent, and this equation was used to compute viscosities of the gaseous helium-nitrogen system for a range of temperatures and pressures including those encountered in Bureau of Mines helium purification processes and in a crude-helium conservation gas reservoir. Tabular viscosities for helium, nitrogen, and 13 helium-nitrogen mixtures are presented for 110 temperatures, 133° to 740' K, and 49 pressures in the range 1 to 240 atmospheres. The accuracy of the tabulated viscosities varies because correlation parameters were obtained from experimental data of unequal reliability. It is estimated that uncertainties in the computed viscosity values are ±5 percent for the region 325° to 740° K, ±2 percent for the region 183° to 325° K, and ±5 percent for temperatures below 183° K. The latter uncertainty may rise to y10 percent as critical conditions are approached.
