Procedures were developed for reclaiming high-temperature alloy scrap in the form of standard cobalt-base alloy. A cobalt-base, multicomponent, high- temperature alloy, such as S-816, can be successfully melted from scrap, and its specified chemical composition can be retained. Induction furnace melting in a controlled atmosphere was used to obtain ingots that were subsequently fabricated by impact forging to provide specimens for heat treatment and testing. Of the numerous metal elements in S-816 alloy, only small quantities of molybdenum were lost in the melting operation as finally developed. Test results indicated that the scrap material, after melting, forging, and heat treatment, was equivalent in room-temperature tensile strength, in high-temperature creep and stress-rupture properties, and in chemical composition to commercially produced S-816 alloy made from virgin material.

The Bureau of Mines is conducting research to determine the effectiveness of long holes in degasifying an area of the Upper Split of the Lower Sunnyside coalbed at Kaiser Steel Co.'s Sunnyside No.1 mine. These holes were drilled from the two outside entries of a section that was closed to mining because of excessive methane emissions. Two holes drilled to 430 and 450 feet produced initial gas flows of 160,000 and 127,000 cfd, respectively. Sixteen days after the completion of the second hole, the total gas production declined to just over 144,000 cfd. In 9 months of degasification, over 35 MMcf of commercial-quality gas has been removed from the coalbed. The combined gas flows declined to 106,000 cfd in the 9-month period. The two holes have reduced face emissions by about 40 pet.

It is apparent that coal will play an increasingly important role in satisfying the nation's energy requirements for the remainder of this century. Both deep mining and surface mining will be practiced to develop known U.S. coal reserves, but until significant improvements in the productivity of deep mining emerge, surface mining is likely to be predominant. This report addresses the problems of coal extraction and surface mine reclamation in the 11-state Midwestern coal resource region, where surface stripping of high-sulfur, bituminous coal has been a well-developed industry for most of this century. Midwestern coal markets have declined in recent years. In part this is a result of widespread conversions to more convenient and (apparently) economical liquid and gaseous fuels, but the decline in Midwestern coal use is also attributable to the impact of current air pollution control regulations that prohibit emissions of sulfur oxides and particulate matter. A part of the regional demand for Midwestern coal has been transferred to the Northern Great Plains where extensive low-sulfur coal reserves are currently being developed.

Limestone is the most widely used of all racks and is essential to a great many industries, including tae building trades, highway construction, metallurgy, agriculture, end many chemical and manufacturing enterprises. It occurs in some form in every State and is produced in thousands of quarries. Production in 1930 exceeded 134,000,000 tons. It has more numerous and more diversified uses than any other rock. This paper is designed to furnish general information on the various branches of limestone quarrying and their economic importance. Brief reference is made to dimension stone, and a more complete discussion follows of the uses, requisite qualities, quarry methods, grid processes of preparation of crushed and broken limestone. Footnote references serve to guide the reader to more detailed information.

Hydraulic fluid power systems are advantageous whenever power output must be accurately and safely controlled. The load movers, cylinders, jacks, rotary actuators and hydraulic actuators in these systems can be made to smoothly and accurately start, stop, reverse, hold position or move steadily under heavy and variable loads or torques. Because hydraulic systems are simple, compact, reliable, and low cost compared to other power methods and because they can deliver controlled power anywhere on the machine to which a hose can be routed, they are a pan of almost every type of machine found on a coal mining section. Some of the functions they perform are positioning drill booms, driving drill pots on roof bolters, positioning curter booms, raising, lowering, and swinging conveyors, driving conveyors on continuous miners, raising, lowering, and applying sustained loads to longwall roof supports, and advancing the face conveyor and roof supports in longwall mining operations.

The Bibliographic Data Base contained in the present volume is the result of a literature search conducted as one task of the Bureau of Mines project concerned with research in borehole assay technology. The data base includes articles, symposia, books, corporate and government reports, patents, and other literature concerned with some aspect of borehole logging, from January 1969 through December 1975. Occasional updating to keep the data base current is anticipated. The remainder of the intro¬duction will be devoted to the explanation of the organization of each entry, along with the translation of terms and abbreviations used in the text. Each entry contains six sections. These include an ID code, a title, an author section, a source section, an abstract, and a descriptor section. The first item listed in an entry is the ID code. This serves to identify an entry. It consists of the first six characters of the first author's (or editor if no authors are involved) last name, along with the last two digits of the year of publication. A letter sometimes follows the year of publication to assure a unique alphanumeric code. For example, if an author named Wilson writes more than one piece of literature in a given year (for example, 1972), the ID code for the entries identifying these pieces of literature would be identical. Therefore, to allow for unique ID codes, the first piece would he identified as "WILSON 72,', the second piece as "WILSON 72A", the third "WILSON 72B", and so on.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Pittsburgh Research Laboratory, cooperated with Tecrete Industries Pty. Ltd. and BHP Australia Coal in a research program to evaluate the strength characteristics and air leakage of four seal and two stopping designs for use in underground coal mines. A fundamental safety research area for NIOSH is to eliminate the occurrence of coal mine explosions or to mitigate their effects. One approach to achieve this goal is to develop new and innovative seal designs that provide increased explosion isolation protection for the mining personnel against ignitions that originate from within the gob or. other worked-out areas of the mine Full-scale seals and stoppings were constructed in the Experimental Mine at Lake Lynn Laboratory near Fairchance, Fayette County, PA. They were ail--leakage tested, then subjected to a series of explosions with average pressure pulses ranging from 25 to 500 kPa (3.5 to 72 psi). Instrumentation measured seal displacement and acceleration as a function of time, providing data to assist in the development of numerical models 1'01- future seal design. All three seals designed with Meshblock wire forlnwo~-k ant1 a lnonolithic shotcrete core withstood the first explosion test, which generated an avcr-age rnaximu~n pressure of - 140 kPa (-20 psi) while maintaining acceptable air leakage rates. These seals I-anged from 175 to 325 mm thick. They included a 2.7-m-high by 325-mm-thick seal that was tesled 27 hr after completion against this - 140-kPa explosion pressure, a special requirement of the test program. This seal survived explosions with pressure pulses up to 300 kPa (43 psi). The 2.3-m-high by 325-mm-thick Meshblock seal survived three explosion tests with overpressures up to 455 kPa (66 psi) and satisfied the air leakage criteria. A I ,200-mm-thick plug seal was constructed of two Gunmesh formwork walls in-filled with shotcrete and a 3,450-kPa (500-psi) strength Aquablend core. This plug seal survived three explosions with pressure pulses ranging 11-om 150 lo 430 kPa (-22 to 62.5 psi) with no measurable postexplosion air leakage. Two Gunmesh stoppings with thicknesses 01' 40 and 75 inln withstood explosion overpressures of 23 and 115 kPa, respectively. Anchoring all seal and stopping designs into the roof, ribs, and floor with steel "rootbolts" provided very effective boundary constraint that is critical to the performanceofstructures subject to explosion overpressures.

All general measures of the safety record of the coal mining industry worsened appreciably in 1970. Injury experience for the year was 260 fatal and 11,552 nonfatal injuries at respective frequency rates of 1.00 and 44.40 per million man-hours of worktime. The fatality total was 57 higher and the rate of occurrence was 18 percent higher than the corresponding figures of 203 fatal injuries with a frequency rate of 0.85 in 1969. The worsened fatality record in 1970 resulted primarily from a major disaster (a single accident which results in the death of five men or more) on December 30, 1970, that killed 38 men. There were no major disasters in 1969. The total of 11,552 nonfatal injuries in 1970 was the highest annual total since 1960. It was 1,635 higher and the frequency rate was 6 percent higher than the corresponding totals for 1969 of 9,917 nonfatal injuries occurring at a rate of 41.76. The injury severity rate of 8,308 days lost or charged per million man-hours was 13 percent worse than that of 7,359 in 1969. Similarly, the average severity of 183 days lost or charged per injury in 1970 was 10 days or 6 percent higher than in 1969. Aggregate worktime of 260.2 million man-hours and production of 609.8 million tons in 1970 were, respectively, 10 and 7 percent higher than in 1969. An average of 144,480 men were at work on an average of 227 active days in 6,316 mines and 544 mechanical cleaning plants during 1970.

This study was made to show the growth of petroleum coking and to deter- mine trends and characteristics of marketing and utilization of coke on the West Coast, comparing these data with those of the United States as a whole. An earlier Bureau of Mines economic survey of petroleum coke was made in 1930 before the widespread use of coking processes. Data, derived from published and unpublished literature as well as from interviews with industry representatives, show a marked increase in the production of petroleum coke since the end of World War II. This increase resulted from the need of refiners to upgrade heavy residuums for which the demand was diminishing. Increasing coke production as well as significant market shifts away from California-produced coke have created excessive stocks of petroleum coke on the West Coast. The causes of these market shifts were based mainly on (1) economic factors and (2) certain undesirable qualities of some of the petroleum coke produced in California.

Information concerning the fusibility of coal ash has become of considerable value to the consumer of coal, mainly in connection with the troublesome formation of clinker resulting from the melting of the ash constituents of the burning coal. The growing interest in such data has led the Bureau of Mines to make a general survey of the "fusing" or "softening" temperatures of the ash from coals of the United States. It is hoped that this information when used together with the large number of coal analyses published 1 by the bureau will assist the consumer of coal in comparing different coals, and in selecting the coal best adapted for his purpose.

The Bureau of Mines has developed structural design data for unreinforced concrete tunnel linings for drifts used in block caving stopes. Design data are given that consist of moment, thrust, and deformation coefficients from which bending, axial, boundary stresses, and structural deformations can be determined at any point on the lining. Data is given for circular, horseshoe, and rectangular linings, each with two different thicknesses and subjected to eight different loading conditions for drifts excavated in hard and soft rocks. The structural analyses performed are based on procedures that account for both the structural behavior of the lining and that of the drift and take into consideration deformational interaction that occurs between them.

Louisiana is one of the major oil-producing States of the country. Commercial production of crude oil in the State began in 1902 and has increased to an estimated output of 157,409,000 barrels in 1945, which is the maximum production up to this time and places the State fourth in the nation. The cumulative production for Louisiana through 1944 is 1,544,481,000 barrels, and, adding the output for 1945, the total to January 1, 1946, is 1,681,890,000 barrels. Data on annual production of crude oil in Louisiana and tentative statistics for 1945 are given in table 1. The large production of crude oil in Louisiana and the present trend to utilize petroleum in accordance with its general characteristics make it increasingly important to present analytical data for crude oils. This report is the fifth of a series presenting such data obtained on crude oils from Louisiana according to the procedure used by the Bureau of Mines. Individual analyses are given for 82 samples from 64 fields; many of the samples are from recently discovered fields, and some are from new producing formations.

The Eagle Silver mine is in the Rush Valley mining district, Tooele County, Utah, and is now operated by the Hampton Mining Co. The property, originally referred to as the Argent, is reported to have been one of the first discoveries in the district. The early operators mined ore to a depth of 850 feet, at which point the property was abandoned because of excessive water. During 1905 the Honerine tunnel was driven into the area approximately 1,800 feet below the collar of the Argent shaft. This tunnel served to drain the levels above and operations were resumed. Ore deposits in the Eagle Silver mine occur in the Galena King lime-stone, a 20-to 60-foot member of interbedded quartzite and limestone in the Oquirrh formation of Pennsylvanian age. This member has been faulted along the bedding, forming the Galena King gouge. Mineralization commonly occurs in or near this gouge area in a brecciated, highly altered, pipelike zone. The known ore shoots occur in association with the breccia pipe, commonly adjacent to cross faulting and porphyry intrusions. In general, two ore shoots have been mined on the upper levels of the mine, one lying to the east and the other to the west of the breccia zone. The Bureau of Mines diamond-drilling program was begun during the latter part of 1948 and completed early in 1949. Nine holes were drilled, aggregating 852.8 feet. Sludge and core samples from mineralized sections were analyzed in the Salt Lake City laboratories. A total of 87 sludge, 71 core, and 11 chip samples was submitted for analysis.

Within the Mine Safety and Health Administration's (MSHA's) classification of metallnonmetal (MAM) mining, the number of independent contractor' employees has increased significantly in recent years. In 1985 independent contractor employee hours reported to MSHA accounted for 4.5% of all M/NM mining employee hours (excluding office workers); by 1994 that proportion had doubled to 9.0%. As a result, these workers now account for an increasingly significant proportion of fatal and nonfatal mining accidents. According to MSHA's statistics, annually computed fatality incidence rates (the number of fatalities per 200,000 employee hours) for independent contractors working in M/NM mining are consistently higher than those for operator employees. Over the five-year period from 1990 through 1994, 53 independent contractor employees were fatally injured while working on M/NM mine property (See Table 1). More than one third of these fatalities (36%) were due to accidents involving powered haulage; 21% were machinery accidents; and 11% percent were falling material accidents. Combined, these three accident classifications accounted for 68% of all independent contractor fatalities occurring on M/NM mine property during these years. Clearly, current efforts to increase the safety of the mining workforce must also address the safety of the independent contractor employee. This report is a preliminary attempt to identify trends in the employment and safety of independent contractor workers by identifying which segments of M/NM mining are experiencing the greatest increases in the number of independent contractor employees and by examining changes in the rates and types of accidents in which these employees are involved. The factor of safety, the traditional measure of stability for earth embankments, is graphically presented in factor of safety charts in this Bureau of Mines report. Factor of safety contours are drawn for homogeneous earth embankments for two contrasting situations: (1) no phreatic surface and (2) a phreatic surface that assumes 10-pct freeboard. The factor of safety can be read directly from the charts if the physical properties of the soil and the geometry of the embankment are known. The curves provide a quick first approximation of the "most stable" and "least stable" condition of the embankment. The Simplified Bishop Method was used for the safety factor calculations, and a sequence of least squares curve fitting steps was used to present the factor of safety in final chart form.

"INTRODUCTION During recent years, roof bolting has become widely accepted as a systematic method of supporting both coal- and metal-mine roofs. Today, over 2 million roof bolts are installed monthly. Most of the information on bolt installation procedure reported to date (1,2,3,4,5,6) 3/ has been obtained by trial and error by individual groups or operators. To insure good roof control, experience and field tests have indicated that roof bolts should be installed immediately after the exposure of new roof, and they should be preloaded enough to minimize sag of the roof over the opening. The question of the proper initial preload for roof bolts is under study, although it is a general practice to impose an initial load on a bolt of approximately 10,000 pounds. This created a problem of measuring bolt loads at installations in underground mines, which was partly solved by using a commercial-type torque wrench; a device that permits a direct reading of the torque applied to the nut on a roof-bolt assembly from which the corresponding load can be determined by referring to specifications furnished by the manufacturers. However, considerable apprehension was expressed regarding the accuracy of this measuring procedure because of variations in the manufacture of roof-bolting materials and the degree of care exercised in making bolt installations. In the process of loading a bolt, only a small part of the effort is expended in producing strain in the bolt - the larger part of the effort is used in overcoming frictional effects in the nut-bolt-washer assembly. These frictional effects are subject to many factors, such as condition of threads, type of lubrication, if any, the finish on the nut and bearing plate, and the alinement of the bearing plate on the bolt. The object of this investigation was to determine the accuracy with which the load developed in a slotted-type roof bolt installed in a conventional manner in shale or sandstone roof rock can be determined from the torque applied to the nut.This report is the first of a series relating to basic research in roof bolting in underground mines. A future report will cover results obtained using expansion-type bolts under similar conditions. Other reports will consider the efficiency of bolt anchorages, the long period stability of bolts, and the design of safe and efficient roof-bolting systems."

The 1963 performance of the United States economy was impressive. The year was one of continued growth unmarred by a recession. By the end of 1963 the economy's expansion had already lasted almost as long as the 1954-57 upswing, and the net gain in output since the trough in activity in early 1961 compared favorably with most earlier postwar cyclical advances. There was no indication of any slow- down at yearend. Both gross national product (GNP) and national income in 1963 were 5 percent higher than in the previous year. GNP totaled $584 billion, a gain of $28 billion over 1962. Real output of goods and services rose 3.4 percent over the year. Price increases continued to be moderate. Production, employment, personal income, and corporate profits all registered new but unemployment continued high at 5.5 percent and the prospects for improvement remained poor. The economy again failed to use its full potential. Current value of mineral production kept pace with the economy. The constant dollar value of mineral production gained more than real GNP because of the relatively stable price of minerals. Mining production achieved a new high in 1963. Steel production totaled 110 million tons, 12 million tons above 1962, making 1963 the first 100- million-ton year since 1957 and lifting the steel-associated minerals group upward. The gain in ferrous metals mining was insufficient to compensate for the decline of nonferrous metals mining resulting in an insignificant decline in the metal mining total as a whole. This U.S. Bureau of Mines publication is a compilation of fundamental cyanide chemistry data obtained through review of the scientific literature. It includes information on thermodynamics and chemical equilibria, ultraviolet-visible and infrared spectra, and the chemistry and photochemistry of cyanide, chemical species derived from cyanide, and metal cyanide species. It also includes guidance on the use of the data for solving practical problems in precious metals applications. This publication is intended mainly for use as a reference by personnel in the precious metals industry and regulatory agencies, and other cyanide users, to provide comprehensive information on cyanide chemistry. The document should assist in the formulation of effective policies for cyanide control in the construction, operation, and closure phases of precious metals mining and metallurgical operations. In addition, the data in this publication will be useful in other contexts, such as dealing with industrial cyanide usage, cyanide-containing wastes and associated environmental problems.
