Pegmatites in Colorado occur for 150 miles along the Front Range (eastern-most range of the Rocky Mountains) from Larimer County on the north to Canon City on the south, and west into the Gunnison area. Many of the deposits have been classified. Minerals found in the various dikes include beryl, scrap and possibly punch mica, lithium-bearing minerals, columbite-tantalite, feldspar, and several rare minerals. Pegmatites are abundant in the Crystal Mountain district in Larimer County. About 5 miles south of the Crystal Mountain district and often identified with that district is the Hyatt pegmatite area. The Hyatt Ranch deposit has attracted particular attention because of the comparatively high beryl con-tent of the upper part exposed in opencut workings.

"INTRODUCTION Considerable interest has been shown in the prospective use of Diesel-powered haulage equipment in both coal and non-coal mines. Foreign technical magazines have devoted considerable space to discussions of the use of Diesel locomotives in European mines and some mention of it has been made in technical papers in the United States. The Bureau of Mines has extensively tested the gases produced in the exhaust of the Diesel engine under various atmospheres and conditions of use; it has established a schedule of tests for permissibility of Diesel engines for use in underground coal mines, including, gassy or dusty mines.This publication provides information as to the successful use of Diesel-powered equipment underground workings in the United States and Europe, briefly discusses the characteristics of some of the toxic gases found in the exhaust of Diesel engines, and points out that Diesel-powered equipment can be used with reasonable safety in underground minus if necessary and entirely feasible precautions are taken."

This report is in partial fulfillment of Contract S0241051 awarded to COMINEC on June 27, 1974. 'Me purpose of the work under this contract is to develop a conceptual design for an automated longwall mining system. The conceptual design will serve as the basis for future design and development of an automated longwall mining system capable of sustained production in excess of 2,500 tons per shift with reduced manpower which will ultimately be demonstrated in an area where conventional longwall mining has been successful. 1.2 DEFINITION OF THE PROBLEM 1.2.1 Why An Automated System The most obvious benefit of automation and remote control in a longwall mining system is the reduction of accidents consequent upon a reduced working force in the hazardous face areas. However, another important aspect of the problem is the skilled labor shortage which is being compounded by the need for vastly increased coal production. The United States coal mining industry had a working force of almost 600,000 miners in 1928 but was able to muster only 145,000 miners in 1970. The miners required to staff the additional working sections and the new mines necessary to meet our energy needs are simply not available. Only automation and remote control will permit a reduced work force with increased production by keeping the face equipment operating continuously.

Demand for primary aluminum ingot increased during February, and several producers temporarily suspended new bookings for ingot. Alcoa announced that it would restart a potline at its Warrick, IN aluminum smelter by April 1, 1979, increasing the operations of that plant to its full capacity of 290,000 tons per year. At the end of February, it was reported that Alcoa would reactivate two of the seven units at its idle Point Comfort, TX smelter in May 1979, increasing the company's annual capacity by about 60,000 tons.

This is the final, report submitted for the Contract No. H0220002 with the U. S. Bureau of Mines for the design and development of a Permissible Automatic Data Acquisition System (PADAS) to measure and record roof stresses in underground mines Basically the PADAS is a portable, battery powered, 24-channel data acquisition system designed for safe unattended operation of up to 30 days duration in explosive environments. The unit will accommodate twenty-four pressure transducers or eight borehole deformation gages (or any combination) at distances up to 300 feet from the PADAS to measure pressures up to 10, 000 psig. All 24 channels as a selected group are scanned sequentially at one of several selectable rates.

This Bureau of Mines survey of methane emissions indicates that total daily emissions have declined from 227 MM ft3 in 1971 to 214.7 MM ft3 in 1973. The highest average daily emissions in million cubic feet per day observed in U.S. bituminous coal mines were, in decreasing order, Monongalia County, W. Va. , 40.7 ; Marion County, W. Va. , 23.1 ; Buchanan County, Va. , 22.1; Washington County, Pa., 12.4; Greene County, Pa., 11.7; McDowell County, W. Va. , 11.4; Cambria County, Pa., 9.8; Jefferson County, Ala. , 9.5; Wyoming County, W. Va., 6.0; Marshall County, W. Va., 4.8; and Indiana County, Pa., 4.8.

"INTRODUCTION This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States is a continuation of a series of reports made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Coordinating Research (CFR) Committee of the Coordinating Research Coouncil (CRC) 4/ and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. The first of these reports presented data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36. 5/ Further reports were issued describing motor gasolines sold during the succeeding summers and winters to and including the summer of 1941. 5/ reports were made on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1941-42 and during the summer of 1942. However, starting with the winter of 1942-43, the semiannual reports were resumed. 5/The present report presents analytical data for samples, representing the products of approximately 100 companies. Most of the samples represented in this report were obtained during December 1)55 and January 194o. As in previous surveys, the companies covered by the survey include both large and small suppliers. Conforming to former reports, the data cover three groups of samples - regular-price, premium-price, and third-grade gasolines.As the number of analyses submitted for samples of third-grade gasoline are not considered adequate to represent this type of motor fuel, data for the analyses have not been averaged, but the individual items are tabulated. The number of samples, items, and brands comprising each group is as follows:Regular-price, 1,958 samples, 317 items, and 96 brands; premium-price, 1, samples, 292 items, and 85 brands; third-grade, 58 samples, 22 items, and 14 brands. The wetting of coal dust by aqueous solutions of surface active agents (surfactants) has been studied. Selected for study were thirty coals and typical surfactants selected from the typical classes of anionic, non ionic and cationics. Of these three classes the practical use of cationics in aqueous solutions has been eliminated due to the inherent negative Zeta potential charge of the representative coals studied. The wetting of the coals has been examined by column flow, contact angle, and settling rate measurements. Results indicated that both anionic and nonionic surfactants are to be considered viable for use; low critical micelle concentration values are also preferred for the surfactants. Study of native waters showed substantial variation in properties, i.e., pH, calcium ion concentration, and conductance. pH variations were also noted to affect the effectiveness of selected surfactants. Combinations of nonionic and anionic surfactants have, in certain instances, produced synergistic enhancement in the coal wetting superior to the effectiveness of each surfactant alone.

The modified in-situ process is one of the methods being considered for extracting oil from oil shale. One of the questions to be answered for this approach is the environmental consequence of underground retort abandonment. This report outlines a study which addresses the question in terms of a grouting solution. It covers the development of a spent shale ash based grout which will fulfill the environmental requirements in terms of strength, stability, and impermeability. In addition, it will allow the reinjection of up to 50 percent of material mined and surface retorted as part of this process.

Marble is one of tile most beautiful and enduring materials employed in the construction industries. Because of its diverse colors, decorative patterns, and varying textures, it has furnished material for artistic architectural design for many centuries. The marble industry is described in some detail in Bureau of Mines Bulletin 106, The Technology of Marble Quarrying, which, unfortunately, is now out of print but may be consul ted at most large libraries. Onyx marble and travertine are discussed in Bureau of Mines Information Circular 6751. The purpose of this paper is to describe the main features of a distinctive group of ornamental marbles known as the serpentine marbles or verde antiques.

The goal of this program was to produce a set of baseline health and safety training materials that could be used by the metal/nonmetal mining industry to reduce injuries and to comply with federal training requirements. The materials developed are arranged in a two level outline format. The first level provides the title, course goals, background and topical outline while the second level provides a detailed outline of the course content. Visuals, designed to portray miners in a positive, attractive fashion, were done in simple line drawing so they would reproduce for handouts without loss of quality. Each of the required units in the Baseline Guides have one or more self-checks. These are designed to be suggestive of evaluation techniques the users can develop for themselves. An instructors guide and a mining terms glossary are included. In a second phase the program developed performance based training guides for Annual Retraining and Experienced New Hires in the Underground Salt Industry.

A new concept of roof support by "sonic pin-setting" is introduced. Initial experiments indicate that this method could introduce tremendous benefits for the coal mining industry by making roof-bolting a faster, safer, and more economical operation. A theoretical model is presented for describing the process and an experimental machine was built. The present testing results are included.

The most fundamental feature of fracture is that it involves separation. Such separation can arise by either separation of molecules, more or less along the line joining their centers (tension), or by d sliding separation roughly perpendicular to that line (shear). Theoretically, a perfect crystal could never be broken by the application of perfectly axial compressive stress (until some sub-molecular actions occur). In tension fields the calculated forces between molecules are extremely high. Consequently, calculations based on the forces known to exist in materials at the molecular and crystalline levels always lead to strengths which are two or three magnitudes higher than the strengths obtained in service or in the laboratory. It has been a major problem, therefore, to explain: (a) How fracture can occur in compressive stress states. (b) Why the observed strength of a material is always much lower than its calculated strength.

A design for a laser-powered optical interferometer, using a specimen whose thermal expansion is to be measured as part of the optical system, was conceived and applied in a prototype dilatometer. The object of thin work was the development of an absolute dilatometer capable of use at elevated temperature, particularly above 1,000° C. The prototype has been operated at temperatures exceeding 1,510° C. Results obtained with this device agree within 2.5 percent with the published data for the coefficient of expansion of columbium.

The work of the United States Bureau of, Mines is concerned primarily with the prevention of accidents in the mining, petroleum, and allied industries. This report analyzes the fatal accidents in the coal mines of Tennessee and gives the pertinent factors in tabular and descriptive form, with interpretations and suggestions to operators, workers, and the State Division of Mines for the future prevention or reduction of accidents in coal mines. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This study was made possible through the cooperation of A. W. Evans, chief mine inspector of Tennessee, and his secretary, Miss Hiliary Penny, who made available the department records and assisted in the segregation and assembly of the data.

This report compares a proposed 10/60 "piggyback" 02 generating self-rescue unit to the standard CO self-rescue unit with respect to work task interference. A simulated low seam coal mine was constructed and subjects performed locomotion, shoveling, cart pushing, and timbering tasks with the 10/60 or self-rescuer attached to their belts. Task completion time was longer on all tasks when wearing the 10/60 unit, although only locomotion was statistically significant. The 10/60 unit was bumped over 100% more often than the standard self-rescuer. Implications for design of the proposed 10/60 container are: 1) unit?s container must be extra durable to withstand the added abuse it is likely to receive by low coal miners; and 2) extra consideration must be given to preventing the device from slipping on the belt while working, especially in low coal.
